was accusing her of being involved
in someone's murder.
I can't imagine
what that must've been like for her.
I know what it was like for me though.

- I hope you know
- Know what?
Is everything okay?
I get that this is hard for you,
but you and I both know
that if it was anyone else in that room,
you would be asking tougher questions.
Are you accusing me of not doing my job?

There were people in your way

The guy we met on our last case
gave us an assist.
Decent bowler, great hacker.
- That's fraud.
- Felony, inadmissible.
Oh, absolutely, highly illegal.
The courts would never allow it,
but the press will.
You would really destroy
your father's life like this?
I wouldn't worry so much about him.
There's lots of stuff
about you on this file.
I find that highly doubtful.
Mr. Wagner and I don't keep up much
with correspondence.
No, you don't,
but he really loves bragging
to his high-powered friends
about his connections to you.

Yeah, this is a murder investigation,
and if I wasn't asking the questions,
someone else would be.
When you got to the penthouse,
who was there?
- No one.
- And how well do you know Charles Hale?
Mr. Hale does a lot of business in LA.
He stays at the Blackwell
when he's in town.
What else do you know about him?
I don't do background checks
on my guests, Adam.
Well, the thing is,
when we showed you his photo,
you neglected to mention
that he had been there before.
Well, our guests expect discretion.
If I had felt there was something
important, I would've told you.
We believe Vera Hensley was killed
in the penthouse
by Frank or Charles
and then moved to the pool.
And the only person that was
in the elevator around her time of death…
was you.
You think I took a dead woman downstairs
in a hotel meal cart?
No.
But it is my job to figure out who did.
Well, it's funny how your job seems
to keep coming in between us, but this…
This, I did not see coming.
We're looking for Charles right now.
Do you have any idea where he might be?
How would I know that? I don't know him!
Then, what were you guys talking
about on the street this morning?
Businessmen like Charles are
the type of VIPs we want coming back
to the Blackwell.
So, that means
sometimes I have to be a little friendly,
and sometimes a man like Charles can
take that the wrong way.
And when it happens,
I make sure the line is clear.
But Charles was…
Trying to cross that line?
First, he asked me
for restaurant recommendations.
Then he invited me to join, and I said no.
And I said no again.
And he followed me out onto the
street, and I told him
to never come back.
I'm sorry that happened.
Maybe I should've told you. I just…
I didn't want you to worry.
- Hey, I'll walk you out.
- Uh, that's okay.
I know my way out.
[SIGHS]
Charles told me he's flying out today,
so we're checking manifests.
You didn't ask
about the "no cities, frosty trees" thing.
That's what Charles said to her.
That's what you thought you heard.
Hey, Morgan,
we already know Charles is lying.
Do you have any reason
to believe that Lucia is lying too?
Lying is a really strong word, but yeah,
I think there's something
she's not telling us.
What I saw was a woman whose boyfriend
was accusing her of being involved
in someone's murder.
I can't imagine
what that must've been like for her.
I know what it was like for me though.
I'm gonna get an update
from Daphne and Oz.
Hey, you want me
to be honest with you, right?
I just think it would be smart
to bring her back in
- and ask a couple more questions.
- It's not your call, Morgan.
Sorry.
I know this is uncomfortable for you,
okay?
Soto could talk to her, or you know what?
I'd be happy to do
Do you want Lucia
to be guilty of something?
What does that mean?
Where are we at with Charles Hale?
Still monitoring the cell number
he gave the hotel. No location yet.
- I hope you know
- Know what?
Is everything okay?
I get that this is hard for you,
but you and I both know
that if it was anyone else in that room,
you would be asking tougher questions.
Are you accusing me of not doing my job?
It's not just your job. This is personal.
I know exactly what this is!
And I don't need you managing me.
I am not one of your kids, Morgan,
so stop treating me like one!

Excuse me one minute.
Ms. Quinn and I do tend
to move in similar circles
- if that's what you're after.
- That job that you had me offer Morgan
didn't come from you, did it?
It's okay. No offense taken.
It's nice to be wanted.
Uh, speaking of Willa,
should we hunt around,
see if we can go find her here, or…
would you rather just make a phone call?
Thank you.
I see you've decided
not to take my advice.
- What a shame.

No, a shame is my daughter losing out
on 15 years with her father,
and that look on your face.
[SIGHS] Okay.
I'm here.
- What do you wanna say?
- This'll just take a minute.
You know, when I was growing up,
my father liked telling people
he was self-made,
got there on merit, which wasn't true.
There were people in your way
who suddenly lost credibility,
jobs, everything.
Some of 'em even disappeared,
and back then, I didn't understand.
Now I do.
It was you.

Technology really is incredible, isn't it?

you can cram onto something this tiny.

- Oh, it's real.
The guy we met on our last case
gave us an assist.
Decent bowler, great hacker.
- That's fraud.
- Felony, inadmissible.
Oh, absolutely, highly illegal.
The courts would never allow it,
but the press will.
You would really destroy
your father's life like this?
I wouldn't worry so much about him.
There's lots of stuff
about you on this file.
I find that highly doubtful.
Mr. Wagner and I don't keep up much
with correspondence.
No, you don't,
but he really loves bragging
to his high-powered friends
about his connections to you.
- He can't shut up about it.
- This is your leverage?
Well, if it isn't,
you have nothing to worry about.
But if it is, you know how to stop it.
Tell me what happened to Roman.

Did you speed through the red

She threatened my kids.
You would've done the same thing.
I wouldn't have ran the red.
I have something you should see.
Charles Hale's employment data
didn't check out.
Dates overlap.
One company doesn't exist,
so I ran his prints federally.
I got hits under three different names.
This guy's lived all over the place.
Alamogordo, New Mexico. San Angelo, Texas.
Yakima, Washington.
You know, I can run it in Copilot.
I'll have it categorize police reports
by location, date, and name,
then color code them by location
and create a summary of the findings.
Okay, here we go.
I'm finding reports on alleged scams
in multiple cities he's lived in.
Look, he posed
as a start-up investor in Phoenix.
A high-end real estate partner in Ojai.
So, he's not a businessman,
he's a con man.
So Frank was his next target,
but why kill Vera?
Well, hang on a second.
Charles checked into the hotel
the same day Frank did,
except Frank was a do-not-announce.
So, how did Charles know
he was even there?
Lucia.
You said Charles,
or whatever his real name is,
lived in Alamogordo?
New Mexico, yeah. Why?
That's by White Sands National Park,
the largest gypsum
dune field in America.
- Gypsum?
- Unlike quartz sand,
gypsum sand dissolves completely in
water, which makes it incredibly rare.
Lucia gave this to Karadec.
It can't be a coincidence.
I think that she and Charles were
in the same city at the same time.
Where's Karadec?
[PHONE BUZZES]
Yeah.
Charles Hale is a con man,
and I think Lucia is involved.
Morgan. I'm not gonna do this again.
Okay. Just hear me out, okay?
The day that Frank checked
into the Blackwell,
I think Charles was tipped off.
- He came to the hotel to con Frank.
- Any idea what the con was?
I mean, Frank and Vera's whole brand
was that they were a
happy couple, right?
It made them millions.
So if Charles got evidence
that Frank wasn't the devoted husband
that he claimed to be…
Frank would've paid anything
to keep it from getting out.
Charles was gonna blackmail Frank.
[MORGAN] While Frank and his friends went
to the pool,
Charles was in the room alone.
Vera walked in and caught him planting
a recording device.
So he had to take out the witness.
[CHARLES GRUNTS, GROANS]
[VERA GRUNTS]
Okay, so how did Vera end up by the pool?
[MORGAN] She snuck out and she ran.
But that elevator is slow,
and she was afraid
that Charles would come after her.
[DAPHNE] So she took the stairs,
but we didn't see it
because there were no cameras there.
It was dark. She was disoriented.
Lucia did clean the room
like she told us,
but she left out one thing.
I think Charles was back in that room.
Unless Charles could've done
all of this on his own.
There were two things that Charles
could not have done on his own.
You think she erased the videotape.
And she tipped off Charles
in the first place
that his next big mark
just walked into her hotel lobby.
That's why Lucia's been so upset.
She's the one who brought
Charles Hale into the Blackwell Hotel.
I'm really sorry.
I'll call you back.
[SIRENS BLARING]

for the rest of her life, okay?
Don't do that to her.
Charles, there are some things
that you and I cannot change
