The Braunsteins are like family.
Isaac and Tierza introduced themselves
after my very first service.
The next day, Tierza was at my door
with a jar of her plum jam.
Now, not everyone was so welcoming,
but the Braunsteins made
me feel like I belonged.
What makes you so sure that
the Braunsteins are in danger?
Today, their youngest, Zev,
was set to be Bar Mitzvahed.
For the past several months,
I've been working with him
on his mitzvah project.
His is about justice in the community.
We were scheduled to
work on it after services, but
But Zev never showed up.
Did you try calling the family?
Maybe maybe one of them was sick.
We all leave our phones
off during the Sabbath.
But I did stop by the house.
Their cars were there.
And nobody answered the door.
And what about the police?
The DCPD came, found
no foul play or forced entry.
They think the family is just
out enjoying the weekend.
You said that Zev's mitzvah
project was about justice.
Did he choose that because
he or someone in the family
had been threatened?
I don't know.
But speaking from
personal experience, things
things have been tough lately.
[SOMBER MUSIC]
I promise we are going
to find out what happened.
First thing, I need to
speak to your Rabbi.
If the Braunsteins were threatened,
they would have confided in him.
Lacey, call Dhan, go to
the Braunsteins' house.
Get a look inside.
Are you going to break into their house?
Respectfully, yes.
Every second counts.
Thank you both for coming.
I've already asked my congregation
to pray and to contact
you if they know anything
that might be helpful.
How well do you know the Braunsteins?
Well, Isaac was on our
board for the last two years.
Tierza is a volunteer
at the local food pantry.
They're a kind family.
What about threats?
Have Isaac, Tierza, or
the kids come to you about
anything recently?
Rabbi Mendel, I'm sorry to interrupt,
but are the rumors true?
Yes, I'm afraid so.
Ms. Mosely, Detective Trent,
this is Jacob Lieb and his family.
Do you know the Braunsteins?
Not well, but I'm not
surprised this has happened.
Our town has become lawless.
Just the other day, our
home was broken into.
And the police have done nothing.
Jacob, this is not the time.
Well, I'm sorry to hear that.
Mr. Lieb, I will look
into it just as soon
as the Braunsteins are safe.
Thank you, Jacob.
Please, all of you, keep praying.

You mentioned threats, Detective.
Earlier this week, Isaac came to me
after his son was beaten
up by a non-Jewish boy
while playing basketball in the park.
Do you have the name of
the boy who attacked Zev?
No. But Isaac was very upset.
And I told him that he
must teach Zev not to meet
violence with violence.
I'm guessing that's not the
advice Isaac was looking for.
He said he was going to
confront the boy's father,
handle the situation himself.
You know you didn't have to break in.
There's a locksmith literally
working across the street.
Yeah, but where's the fun in that?
So you got all the phones?
Yeah, Daniel was right.
They were all turned off and at home.
It looks like the cops
got it right for once.
No signs of struggle.
Only red flag was some
grease and milk in the same sink.
In a kosher home, meat and

I know you're not saying

of milk on their way out.
No, more like someone in the family
made a mistake, which would only
happen under extreme duress.
Why don't you take the phones
to Zeke, see what you can find?

We found something.
Mom noticed a section of the

I'm just glad that we found them.

you showed me today at Temple?
I've seen them before.
Three years ago, I was at a park
and I saw Dad, Taylor, and Rachel.
Instinctively, I wanted to go to them,
despite everything Carrie had
told me about being unwanted.
But then I saw this little girl.
A man was following her.

It must be some question.
A year ago, I committed a sin.
And ever since, no matter how
much good I put into the world,
that sin not only haunts me,
but everyone I hold dear.
Hmm.
You're worried about the
sins of the father, so to speak.
Exodus 34:7.
Of course, there's another
verse in Deuteronomy.
"And the children shall not
die on account of the father."
In Hebrew, there are many words for sin,
but one, my favorite perhaps, is Het,
which means something
that has gone astray.
For you to atone, you
must decide in your heart
never to do it again
and confess it out
loud for all to hear you.
