Don't look at the Camera
1
Rachel Carey, I understand
you have this drive
to get to the very heart of things.
It's commendable.
But here at Counter-Terrorism,
accepting you can rarely see the
whole picture is part of the job.
Is anyone going to tell me
what the problem is?
You're under suspicion for assault
and kidnapping.
This ain't what happened!
None of this happened!
I think someone's interfering
with our feeds,
tampering with evidence.
They call it correction,
when they take something
they don't like and they change it.
Correction is a method of
real-time image manipulation
using the disruption of camera
feeds and the deployment
of deepfake technology.
TV: I'm now joined by Home
Office Security Minister Isaac Turner.
- Good evening.
- Good evening, Khadija.
You're not a true believer, are you?
I haven't joined them.
I am trying to beat them,
and they are watching me
day and night.
- You need a plan.
- Have you got a plan?
I need to witness the UK Correction
programme from the inside.
I need to prove what they're
capable of beyond doubt.
The people involved in this,
they'll stop at nothing
to keep it secret.
You are not taking this story away
from me. I'm calling Legal.
If you're serious about exposing it,
you need to prove it definitively.
- And how do you suggest doing that?
- Together.
I stopped by the Commissioner's
office this morning.
- Handed in my 728.
- You're resigning?
Don't worry, Gemma.
I didn't give the real reason.
You can't win, Rachel.
Asset deployed. Asset deployed.
You're asserting that there's
some sort of programme
within British Intelligence
to create fake video footage?
They call it Correction.
Frank, please detain DCI Carey.
She's involved in subversive
action against the state.
Not my state.
She hasn't said anything
about the US.
While you believed you were
watching Isaac Turner,
you were, in fact, watching me
a deepfake.
Only by bringing this conspiracy
out into the open
can we hope to confront it.

Home Secretary,
that's not what I asked.
So I ask you a third time.
Isn't this ultimately
a bid for Number 10?
Andrew, if we're serious
about protecting ourselves
from threats of artificial intelligence,
and those who would use it
against us, then this
Government cannot afford to rest.
And that means smarter surveillance,
smarter borders,
smarter elections
Yes, I get the idea. You're refusing
to answer my question
and we are out of time.
- Home Secretary, good afternoon.
- Ah, thank you, Andrew.
And the time now
is just past 12
Commander Carey.
RACHEL: Home Secretary.
Operation Veritas is ready.
Whatever happens,
don't look at the camera.
Reads as nervous.
Yes, thank you.
It's not my first time in a studio.
Well, it's first time in a hot seat.
Two minutes to air,
everyone, two minutes.
Two minutes.
Khadija travelling.
Line up on guest, please.
Excuse me, I need to speak to her
before we go on.
- I have been asking.
- Uh, yes, I haven't forgotten.
They know you're here to talk about
Carey-Cams. Not the inquiry.
Smart-Cams! What are you doing?
It's BTS, for social. "Carey-Cams"
is getting more traction.
Yes, because you keep pushing it.
If I have to sit through one more
talk on inclusivity, I'm going to
exclude myself and take those
podcast people up on their offer.
- Carey-Cams, yeah?
- Can you take this for me, please?
- Rachel!
- 30 seconds.
So glad we could make this happen.
Bloody thrilled you're getting
the recognition you deserve.
- Something wrong with your phone?
- Were we supposed to have lunch?
What happened to the
rest of your expose?
- Well, you saw the follow up?
- Little light, wasn't it?
Whose flask is this and what the
fuck's it doing under my desk?
That's the green tea
you asked for, Khadija.
- I don't know.
- Oh, it's hers.
- Oh, well, thank you!
- You left out half the evidence.
What are you saving it for,
Khadija, the book deal?
- Rachel, please.
- Seven
It's called Legal and Compliance.
Get used to it.
- five, four, three,
- CLEARS THROA
two, one, and cue.
Good evening. I'm Khadija Khan.
Or am I?
12 months on from the BBC's
award-winning report
on Britain's deepfake
evidence scandal,
questioning everything we see
has become a national habit.
So how do we begin to sort fact
from fiction,
and who do we trust with the job?
Well, how about the woman who blew
the whistle on Correction herself?
Giving her first interview
as Head of SO15, another exclusive,
whistle-blower turned Commander,
Rachel Carey, joins me
live in the studio.
- Scout's honour.
- Good evening, Khadija.
It's, er, Acting Commander
Was blowing the whistle
your only option?
Er, erm
Er, no, I-I could've turned
a blind eye to what I saw,
- and, erm, kept my head down.
- But you didn't. Why?
I believed the best way to stop
the Correction programme
was to go public with it.
The question I'm asking,
Commander, is why you?
Why were you the one
to take a stand?
Er, I suppose it's It's
It's hard for some people,
you know, some people have families.
And I, erm
I just felt I should do it.
Was there a degree of self-interest?
Look at that.
I mean, blowing the whistle hasn't exactly
done your career much damage,
has it?
I mean, a year ago, you were
a thorn in the side of SO15.
And now you're Commander
Khadija, when I exposed Correction,
I wasn't thinking about my career.
- I was risking it.
- Well, it was a risk that paid off.
CHUCKLES. You must admit,
you've done rather well since then.
With all the exclusives
you've been getting,
you haven't done too badly yourself.
Touché.
Well, your expose has
already led to a number
of convictions being overturned,
starting with that of former soldier
Shaun Emery.
Were you glad to see him released?
I was.
But Shaun Emery is just the start.
We don't know the scale
of Correction in the UK,
which is why we need
a public inquiry.
Well, Lord Justice Frederickson
starts calling witnesses
to his long-awaited inquiry
from tomorrow.
Do you think the finger of blame
will point to British Intelligence
or further afield?
You've seen the same evidence
I have, Khadija
Are you hopeful that Lord
Frederickson will get to the truth?
I hope that the people who know
the truth will do the right thing.
Come forward and testify
so we can begin to understand
how many people
in the UK
have been put behind bars
on deepfake evidence.
And if it turns out to be
hundreds of violent offenders,
I mean, will they all be released?
Khadija, the question you're asking
is essentially the same one
you asked at the beginning.
How do we sort fact from fiction,
and put an end to deepfake evidence?
Well, I'm very excited to announce
that in partnership
with the Home Office, I'm developing
a new kind of CCTV cam
No, well, the The question
I'm asking is, are we about to see
a tsunami of serious
offenders let out onto our streets?
If incriminating footage
is found to have been faked,
the defendant will be entitled
to a re-trial.
If the conviction cannot be
upheld, then they may be released.
As Commander of Counter-Terrorism,
public safety is my first priority.
But I will not break the law
to defend the law,
and I will not put people away
under false evidence.
Thank you very much,
Commander Rachel Carey.
Why didn't you tell us?!
It was just work.
Bollocks. Were you nervous?
I'd shit myself.
Did you shit yourself?
Abigail, the Commander of SO15
does not shit herself.
So what did you think?
Oh, I didn't see it.
I-I just saw the comments.
What comments?
Ugh No, I'd
I'd rather not know.
Yeah, all right, whatever.
- Why, what were they saying?
- You're basically a celebrity now.
Any idea if Dad saw it?
Are you mad? They go to bed at 9.00!
Can you get tables
in restaurants now?
I think I could do that anyway.
Actually, I could squeeze in
a drink on my way home.
With me?
Well, I mean I've got to be up
early in the morning, but, you know,
it's not every day you give
your first interview on nation
COUGHING
Oh You sound
I'm actually a bit busy.
Can we do another time?
- Sure, yeah.
- LAUGHTER
Go for it. I didn't realise.
- Er, have a good
- Stop it!
Er, yep.
PHONE CAMERA SHUTTER
I would delete that one
if I were you.
What the fuck are you doing here?
You might've found a way
to make cameras safe,
but doors, not so much.
- Get out of my home.
- Your home?
I would've figured this
for a rental.
Don't worry, you won't find
many personal touches
round my digs either.
I could clear out of there
in 20 minutes,
you'd never know I was there.
And yet you linger.
You don't like me very much,
do you, Fast-Track?
I'm not used to seeing you
without blood on your hands.
What do you want, Frank?
Penthouse apartment
and a $12 bottle of Scotch?
Shouldn't you be drinking
fine single malts by now?
HE SIGHS
Saw you on TV.
You did good.
- I have notes.
- If you've got something to say, say it.
You never mentioned the US.
- Is that a note?
- No, no, no, no.
No, we like that. No, don't change
anything about that.
No, one year and still nothing
linking the CIA and Correction.
You plan on keeping your mouth
shut at the inquiry too?
There is a big difference between
"keeping my mouth shut"
and not having enough evidence
against you.
Well, we all know you're brave,
Fast-Track.
You're not suicidal.
You were smart to make that deal.
What deal?
You used my op to expose
the British programme.
Now, if that had happened on
my watch without my authorisation,
that would've made you an enemy
of the state, and me an asshole.
So when the Agency
bundles you into a van
and starts asking you questions,
remember we have a deal.
And why would I do you a favour?
So I could owe you one.
Never know, you may need a favour
from a guy like me one day.
Oh, I heard you caught a Russian.
Keep up the good work.
What's your interest?
Jesus Christ,
can't a person pay a compliment?
You're always fishing for intel.
Garland was right.
You're wasted as a cop.

- Photoshoot? Why?
- They're doing a profile piece.

- What? Who says I'm?
What the hell has my relationship
status got to do with anything?
Fine, the headline being, you know,
First Female Head

I'm not the First Female Head
of Counter-Terrorism.
- OK, it's just a headline.
- It's not the truth.
- Oh, whose truth?
What?
Do you have a preference which
side of the stage the podium goes?
I think it makes more sense
on the right,
but then if we want the Carey-Cam
- in the middle
- Paige,
I trust you to make these
crucial decisions by yourself.
Tom.
I need you to pull all the

Something happening this afternoon,
sir?
I'll be glad to get the launch
out of the way, sir, to be honest.
Well, we're all
tremendously excited.
Now, I know that your annual review
isn't for another few weeks,
but this felt like more of
a milestone to, well,
express our profound gratitude.
You've given SO15 a clean
bill of health, Rachel,
- in under a year.
- Sir, it's a work in progress.
Operation Carey-Cam's going
to be the icing on the cake.
Operation Veritas, Smart-Cams.
Really appreciate the timing
of the launch, Rachel.
It's a neat distraction
from the Frederickson Inquiry.
I'm not responsible for
the scheduling of the press launch.
Well, we want to make it
crystal clear, Rachel,
you will continue to be the
brand ambassador for these cameras,
even when the new Commander begins.
I-I didn't realise one had
been selected?
- We're very close.
- SLIGHTLY OMINOUS MUSIC
- May I ask?
- I'll introduce them
as soon as their vetting's complete.
The, er, security process
has had to be very rigorous,
as I'm sure you can imagine.
I had thought I'd be involved
in that.
Yeah, but then you
put yourself forward.
- Conflict of interests.
- You asked me to put myself forward.
There'll be other opportunities,
Rachel.
Ultimately, we felt that
the department could benefit
from somebody with more experience
at multi-agency level.
Someone more used to collaborating
with other entities.
Sir, I was hired
to turn SO15 around.
I could only do that
by hiring people I trust.
And you've done a formidable job,
Rachel.
You are already the youngest
Acting Commander of SO15.
- You'll get there.
- Sir.
I look forward to being
relieved of my PR duties
so I can concentrate
on the real work.
Er, we'd like you to continue with
your public-facing commitments.
Absolutely. All those hours of media
training haven't gone to waste.
Oh, congrats, by the way.
I heard you gave
Khadija Khan a bit of a kicking.
Paige did a great job.
So just to be clear, you'd like me
to be the face of the department,
but not the head?
Ma'am.
You found him, then.
Any concerns?
Frank Napier paying you a visit
in the middle of the night?
- I'd say that was a concern.
- Did the system flag anything?
He's made no attempt to hide himself.
- What did he want?
- Hmm.
Shall I leave this with you,
ma'am, or on your desk?
Came for you this morning.
- It's cleared security.
- See what it is.
It's a good thing, ma'am,
if the CIA can't hack us.
Do you ever worry this has all been
too easy?
When you think who wanted us
to fail,
the depths they'd go to
to try and stop us.
They've left us alone until now.
You want me to put eyes on Napier?
I'm not talking about Frank.
We're getting a new Commander.
SHE CLEARS HER THROA
Ah, you was robbed, ma'am.

The truth about Correction
may finally be coming,
as the long awaited Frederickson
inquiry calls its first witnesses.
That's right, Khadija, Lord Justice
Frederickson has indeed promised
a "full and unflinching" inquiry
into the deepfake scandal.
And he's started off
on the front foot,
calling as his first witness the
former Counter-Terrorism Commander
Danny Hart.
Many people feel that he is a key
witness in this investigation
- into the deepfake scandal
- Ed?
- Have you just seen what I've seen?
- Yeah. Fuck the Frederick son Inquiry!

The man appears out of nowhere,
shoots a Government minister
right before my eyes,
and then disappears without a trace.
I'd say that was sophisticated.
I'd say he was a genius, Tom.
He is laughing at us.
He is laughing at me.

I saw you kill Isaac Turner,
and you know I did.
I need your help.
Why on earth do you think
I'd want to help you?
- Because you care?
- About you?
About matters of national security.
Armed police! Armed police!
