[pensive music playing]
About a month ago, our office received
a bunch of suspicious activity reports.
What was in the reports?
Multiple large money transfers
from several American companies
to a crypto wallet.
It was strange.
[Peter] Jay Batra was a suspect
in a murder investigation,
and I was sent to track him down.
- You don't know where he is, do you?
- Please, you can help me.
[Mike] Heroes In Healing?
They're, uh, a
nonprofit for injured vets,
which seemed legit
until I started flagging their activity.
[Peter] Heroes In
Healing donates millions
to Senator George Lansing's
super PAC each year.
The senator was lying to Mike about it.
- But why?
- Let's ask him.
- [Father] What's your poison?
- IPA.
[Mike grunting, groaning]
- Who are you?
- The president sent me.
I'm your new partner.
Chelsea Arrington, I don't wanna go
another day without you by my side.
- Woo-hoo!
- [all cheering]
- Did you see the butler come by this way?
- No, ma'am.
Mrs. Hagan?
- [Mott yelling]
- He's got a gun!
There's no gun on the guy.
- What?
- He's unarmed.
[suspenseful music playing]
[music fades]
[ominous music playing]
[Jenny] Theo, come on, give me something.
Okay, what about, "I used to be a snack,
but now I'm a Happy Meal
'cause I come with toys and kids"?
Women don't wanna
be thought of as snacks.
- Right.
- And I'm still a snack, Theo.
Right, right.
Uh, "Motherhood is like
a fairy tale in reverse."
"You start in a beautiful gown and
finish cleaning up everyone's messes."
- No.
- You sure?
[Jenny scoffing]
Is that a good joke?
- No, ma'am, that's not a good joke.
- [Jenny] See?
No. You're right, I'm sorry.
I… I don't know what
mothers want to hear,
other than "I got into Harvard."
Theo, focus.
Ma'am. It's time.
[Jenny] Great.
[indistinct chatter]
These women are gonna eat me alive.
[Chelsea] Just tell 'em the truth.
Go on.
Tell them about
the bad morning you've had.
Your youngest has the croup,
you've got a run in your stocking,
and your speechwriter
can't come up with a decent joke.
- I've got a run in my stocking?
- You do if you make one right now.
I say this with all due respect,
that is a terrible idea. [chuckling]
Give me your pen.
[stocking tearing]
- I've got a run in my stocking.
- You've got a run in your stocking.
- What's your name?
- Chelsea, ma'am.
Chelsea, Theo.
Theo, Chelsea.
[tender music playing]
I'm gonna keep my eye on you.
[woman] Please welcome the future
First Lady of the United States,
Jenny Hagan.
Sycamore moving.
[audience applauding]
- This is never gonna work.
- Wanna bet?
[Theo] Yeah, I wanna bet.
Dinner?
Ladies, I have a confession to make.
I'm going on about three hours of sleep.
My youngest has the croup.
I have a huge run in my stockings.
Which Look, I'm not
even… I'm not even…
[audience laughing]
Okay, appetizers.
This isn't me being cheap.
[Jenny] I'm having a morning.
But I'm sure you can all relate.
- You know exactly what I'm going through.
- [woman 2] Yeah.
We're mothers.
And even when it's all going to hell,
we show up.
Am I right?
[audience laughing, cheering]
- A drink.
- [Jenny] Throughout history…
- Will you have a drink with me?
- Yes.
…they've had to fight to have
the issues they care about…
[opening theme music playing]
[siren wailing in distance]
[car horns honking in distance]
You should think about getting a plant.
No small talk.
Oh, no, it's not small talk.
It's, uh… it's a practical suggestion.
I've seen Afghani prisons
nicer than this place. Get a fern.
Who you callin'?
I'm not waiting around all night
for Mosley to call me back.
So you're gonna give them your code,
and we'll see if you're legit.
Right.
[chuckling] The code.
[line ringing]
[agent] Yes, go ahead.
[Adam clearing throat] Night Action.
[agent] Code, please.
Candle, axe, pin…
brook.
[agent] Harvestman?
That's me. Can you patch me through
to Deputy Director Mosley, please?
It's important.
[agent] Hold, please.
- [agent] Director Mosley, you're on.
- [Mosley] Hello.
Hey, it's Peter.
My new partner is in my kitchen.
He says Hagan sent him.
Do you know about this?
[Mosley sighing] No, I do not.
Harvestman came on
to Night Action recently,
but I was not informed
that POTUS assigned him to you.
He's in your kitchen?
Yeah, he broke in.
[Mosley] Hagan's taken an interest
in this case
to the point where
he's ignoring protocol.
Not good.
So this guy's either
a… a babysitter or a spy?
- What do you want me to do with him?
- [Mosley] Read him in.
But proceed with caution.
We'll talk later.
[tense music playing]
[sighing] I'm hungry. You hungry?
The Broker probably wanted Jay
because of his theory
that the LFS funded
the terrorist attack was spot-on.
The problem is the finances are a maze,
and The Broker's protected
behind shell companies.
And you think this, uh…
this Jay kid is, uh… is still alive?
- Excuse me.
- I hope so.
Yeah. Could
Uh, I forgot to order a side of sausage.
And can I get some
of those jelly things, please?
- Sure you don't want anything?
- Not hungry.
You must never be hungry.
You've got no fucking food in the house.
So…
you don't eat,
you got terrible taste in decor.
What else?
Oh, wait. No, I know.
You lost two colleagues
'cause of this, uh… this Broker guy.
I read your file. You've been in it,
my friend. Quite a year.
[car horns honking]
- When do I get to read your file?
- That's not up to me.
- Where were you before this?
- Oh, I was with the Agency a while back.
And then…
oh, this and that.
That really clears
things up. Thanks, man.
I'm assuming that's a…
service-related thing?
So how can I help?
Now who doesn't wanna talk?
Touché.
It's a list of suspicious activity reports
that came from one bank, Walcott Capital.
We've been trying to trace
who's behind the shell companies.
- "We"?
- I.
[tense music playing]
You wanna help me?
See if you can find any connections
or similarities between the companies.
All right. I'll run it through
the Aleph database. Start there.
What you gonna do?
I'm working an asset,
but it's a delicate solo type of thing.
[chuckling] All right, you
don't trust me. That's okay.
We'll start slow.
[tense music continues]
[officer] All right, guys.
[indistinct chatter]
Arrington, come with me.
The intruder's name was Brian Mott.
No history of instability.
Employed at the White House
as a butler for over seven years.
Yeah, I knew him by sight.
Wife? Kids?
Yes. To both.
Now, I've got the basics.
He parked the sandwich cart,
and you noticed that
he'd been in there for some time?
Uh, eight minutes.
FLOTUS thought he was armed,
but there was no indication of a weapon.
No.
But there was a physical altercation.
Verbal threats.
Yes, sir.
Anything else?
- No.
- We'll do an official debrief tomorrow.
You'll need a psych eval
to get cleared to return.
POTUS wants you back
as soon as you're up to it.
- You solid?
- Yes, sir.
Go home.
[music fades]
[Theo] Here, let me get that.
You need anything? Like herbal tea?
- Do we even have herbal tea?
- No, thanks.
Do you wanna watch something dumb?
Take your mind off things?
What do you think happened
in those eight minutes?
The intruder was in there
for eight minutes.
Why didn't FLOTUS sound the alarm sooner?
She was probably trying
to talk him down, stay calm.
She didn't press the panic button
until she was aware
I was on the other side of the door.
Well, she was probably too scared
to do anything before then.
She felt threatened.
What is it?
[sighing] I don't know.
Just a stable man by all accounts,
with a wife and children,
a long-time employee of the White House,
suddenly just snaps
and attacks the First Lady?
It… It doesn't make any sense.
You can't dissect the psyche
of someone you don't know.
[dramatic music playing]
Most people don't
make sense all the time.
I think you have been through
something harrowing,
and maybe you're looking for meaning
where there is none.
Hey.
You saved her life.
You're a hero.
And I love you.
Senator Lansing's office
has been dodging me.
First, he has no available times,
and now he's out of town
at some undisclosed location.
He must know something.
Otherwise, why lie to Mike?
Maybe he's in on it.
Maybe he's covering
for a donor who is. I don't know.
Look, I think, um…
I think you should take a crack at him.
How do you feel about mentioning, um…
mentioning Mike?
You know, call the senator's office,
tell them that shortly after
meeting with the senator, Mike…
- Died?
- We're running out of options here.
It might help move things along.
I was wondering how you'd feel about it.
I'd feel great.
Are you kidding me? Mike would love it.
- Really?
- Yeah. Hand me that.
[Peter chuckling]
[phone buttons clacking]
- [Isabel clearing throat]
- [woman] Senator Lansing's office.
Hi, this is Isabel De Leon
at The Financial Register.
My colleague was Mike Fonseca.
I'm not sure if your office is aware,
but shortly after meeting
with the senator,
he died under very
suspicious circumstances.
- I'm sorry to hear that.
- Investigation.
Yes, thank you.
Uh, they're actually opening up
an investigation into his death.
[woman] I see.
And, um, your name again, please?
Isabel De Leon.
Mike left me all of his notes,
including an important message
for the senator.
I've taken over the story
of the senator's super PAC,
which will now include the suspicious
circumstances of Mike's death.
So if the senator cares to comment,
he could reach me at The Register.
[woman] Okay, I will…
Actually, can I put you on hold
for just a moment?
Of course. She put me on hold.
Hey, uh, Rita, what's the website
we used for the oligarch's story?
- Sayari.
- [Isabel] We should look into that.
It flags sanctions on shell companies.
[Rita] Hi.
Hi.
[woman] Miss De Leon,
hold for Senator Lansing.
- [softly] Senator.
- [Lansing] Hello, Miss De Leon.
I understand you're interested
in interviewing me.
Yes, Senator. Hi. I've taken over Mike
[Lansing] Mike's story, yes.
I was so sorry to hear about his passing.
- Good man.
- Yes.
He was a very good man.
I was hoping to ask
[Lansing] Tell you what, why don't you
come see me at the retreat Upstate?
I can give you a couple hours
of my undivided attention,
and you can ask me your questions.
- Great. I was hoping to ask you a ques
- [Lansing] Wonderful.
If you can get to
the West 30th Heliport by noon,
I'll have a chopper waiting for you.
- Bye for now.
- Yep. Bye for now.
Holy shit.
He's worried.
[tense music playing]
[Isabel sighing]
You okay?
Just wondering about the wisdom
of going alone
to an undisclosed location with this man.
You won't be alone. Okay?
I'll be there as soon as I can.
- We don't even know where I'm heading.
- Yeah we do.
I put in the tail number
of the helicopter.
They have to register their flight path.
You're going to
the Barrow Valley Hunting Lodge.
Oh my gosh, I've heard about that place.
It's super exclusive.
You can't get on the grounds
without an invitation.
Well, then I'll get an invitation. Okay?
But I will be there. I promise.
[helicopter blades whirring]
You know, you're less of a jerk
than I originally thought.
Give it time.
[siren wailing in distance]
[tense music swelling]
[Jenny] Thank you so much for being here.
I feel confident
that we can reach our capital
campaign goal by the end of the quarter.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- Good night.
- Thank you, ma'am.
[man] Madam First Lady.
I'm going over to the chief of staff…
Chelsea, come in.
Keep me posted, okay?
I'm so glad you're here.
I feel like in the chaos of last night,
I never really thanked you properly.
No thanks necessary.
I see you haven't missed a step.
Well, it's not easy getting all those
board members together in the same room.
And the truth is, the nonprofit
gives me something to focus on.
Other than myself.
How are you? Really?
I'm good. I'm cleared to return to work.
Honestly, I'm more concerned about you.
Oh, I'm a champion compartmentalizer.
It's the only way
to be a public figure and stay sane.
- Want a cookie?
- No, thank you.
One thing I just keep going over is…
what could've caused him to attack you?
Did you know him well?
Not well, no.
As well as I know any staff here.
I'm always friendly, certainly,
but not familiar.
I just ask because I realized he was
in there with you for quite some time,
and I wondered if he was threatening
from the get-go, or…
[cup clattering]
Chelsea…
I know I just made a joke about
compartmentalizing, but it's true.
I would really rather not rehash
a very traumatic and unsettling event.
I'm sure you understand.
I will forever be grateful to you
for saving my life.
But… I would really love it
if we could both move forward.
Of course.
[tense music playing]
Welcome to Barrow Lodge.
- We're happy to have you, Miss De Leon.
- [rifle firing in distance]
This way.
[indistinct chatter]
- And this is our lobby.
- [Isabel] Hi.
Uh, we have a smoking lounge,
a billiards room,
and, of course, our restaurant,
which was recently awarded
its second Michelin star.
[Isabel] Mmm.
We also have private homes
for sale on the property
for our hunting enthusiasts.
- Will you be hunting?
- Oh, no, I don't think so.
Well, let me show you the gun room,
as it is quite impressive.
And it is both deer and pheasant season.
Only in America.
Yes.
Allow me to show you to your quarters.
And here we are at the White Tail Suite.
Right this way.
We've sent up
some wine and nibbles for you.
If you care to observe a shooting party,
we can arrange for
a full-service picnic out in the field.
For the pheasant hunt, that is.
It just would not be possible
for the deer hunt. [chuckling]
No. Of course not. [chuckling]
And Senator Lansing requests the pleasure
of your company at dinner this evening.
7:00 p.m. at Greenhead.
[breathing deeply] Michelin-starred.
That's right…
Michelin-starred.
Well, this has been my pleasure.
Please let me know
if there's anything else I can do.
I will. Thank you. So kind.
[ominous music playing]
[sighing]
[music fades]
You put that on the fire,
then get your mess kit out,
and, uh, we'll hang the dish line,
and we'll get the dinner going.
- Okay.
- Tomorrow, we'll go fish in the river.
Cool.

[crows cawing]

a job interview with Mr. Marmo.

with the senator tonight.

- Yes. Courtesy of Mike.
He said if you're ever the guest of
an interviewee, always check for wires.
But the room is clean.
It's a nice room.
[pensive music playing]
We gotta get you some different clothes
if you're gonna fit in here.

This is nice. Yeah.
- I like that.

- Thank you.
You know a lot about this stuff.
Uh, the right shoes, the right clothes.
I grew up poor, but I've been around
a lot of wealthy people since then.
So I've studied their ways
and their customs.
- Like an anthropologist?
- Specializing in rich assholes.
How'd you end up in those circles
if you didn't grow up rich?
We have them.
Would you like to try them on?
Oh no. Just ring these up,
along with this, please.
- [woman] Okay.
- Thank you.
This is gonna be a lot
on my salary, honestly.
No. I can expense it. It's on me.
[tense music playing]
Hey.
- Your boy about to come on?
- [door closing]
Oh, speak of the devil.
Good afternoon.
Thank you for gathering here today
on such short notice.
There was an incident in the residence
of the White House last night.
At approximately 9:00 p.m.,
a domestic employee of the White House
entered the presidential bedroom
and attacked the First Lady.
Thanks to the quick reaction
of the Secret Service,
the First Lady was unharmed,
the threat was immediately neutralized,
and the armed perpetrator
was shot and killed.
Both the president and the First Lady
wish to express their utmost thanks
to the Secret Service
for their bravery and professionalism,
and extend a particular debt of gratitude
to Agent Chelsea Arrington
for her quick thinking and heroism.
When we have more information,
I will share it with you.
In the meantime,
President Hagan looks forward
to getting back to work
for the American people.
I won't be taking questions
at this time. Thank you.
- [door opening]
- [music fades]
[door closing]
Why'd you say my name?
It's against protocol, and you know it.
I know. I'm sorry.
It was a last-minute change.
FLOTUS insisted. She felt it was
important you be acknowledged.
Now my name is linked to this story.
And you put it in the public record
that the perpetrator was armed. False.
He was not armed. You know that because
we talked about it in my living room.
Your living room?
I thought it was our living room now.
You said the Secret Service
acted immediately. False.
As I've told you repeatedly, that man
was in her room for a full eight minutes.
Okay. The point of the Hi, Nancy.
The point of the statement
was that as soon as you realized
something was amiss, you acted.
But you didn't say that.
Because the statement
was crafted by the press shop,
and we felt that timeline
would invite unwanted questions.
Actual thought went into this,
and it was approved by POTUS.
We're trying to contain the story.
I have a job to do too.
I didn't think your job
included lying to the public.
Well, that's a serious accusation.
I'm aware.
I spin. I don't lie.
The next time you decide
to ignore the rules
and publicly out a Secret Service agent,
get your goddamn facts straight.
[tense music playing]

There's an axiom in politics.
It's not so much
what you say about the issues.
It's what the issues say about you.
- [music fades]
- And, um… uh…
And that… that's one of the things
that journalists like yourself
need… need to be cognizant of.
Not just the policy position,
but the belief in it.
To that end, Senator,
I would like to ask
How is the trout?
It's very good.
You really should've had the duck.
You know, they're known for their duck.

The Mike's notes, he
Quack.
Quack.
[Lansing chuckling]

I'm just kidding.
I'm just, you know… I'm sorry.
According to Mike's notes,
he asked you about the super PAC story.
- And the answer you gave was not true.
- Glad you mentioned that.
Mike and I, we had
a long history together. All right?
Off the record,
he knew he could rely on me
for the real dirt, so to speak.
Had the Pulitzers to prove it.
How do you think journalists,
ones that I'm… I'm sure you admire,
how do you think
they get their award-winning stories
and write their books?
Access. Relationships.
I don't see how that's relevant.
Oh, no, it's very relevant.
It's entirely relevant.
I'm on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
We are currently having hearings
on Supreme Court ethics.
Again, off the record,
you didn't know that
because those sessions are secret.
But that's the kind of big scoop
I could give you.
[waitress] Here you are, sir.
I can tell you exactly what's happening
in those hearings.
- In exchange for what?
- In exchange for what?
[Lansing chuckling]
Such a mercenary turn of mind.
Well, look, you know,
it's a symbiotic relationship.
We'd help each other.
So back to the super PAC story.
Oh, it's a nothingburger, you know.
Super PACs, they're here to stay.
You know, their financial doings
might be opaque, but they're not illegal.
I wouldn't waste your time on it.
But when I get back to Washington,
you give me a call, and we'll talk turkey
about those hearings.
A lot of people in your business,
they would do anything
to count me as a source.
The main donor to your super PAC
was linked to funding
the LFS terrorist attack on Pima 12
that killed 157 American citizens.
I wouldn't call that a nothingburger.
You may claim to not know who that is,
but I will find out their identity.
You could be
on the right side of the story
or on the wrong side of the story,
but it will go to press.
Now, do you care to comment?
On the record.
[ominous music playing]
You're making a mistake.

Do you think Lansing
was talking to the donor?
I think it was a proxy for the donor.
Whoever it was, the senator
seemed to be taking direction from him.
- You know who it is, don't you?
- Who, the donor?
[Peter sighing]
I have a theory.
Would you care to share it with me?
I can't.
I'm not letting you screw me
on this story, Peter.
I'm not trying to screw you.
I don't even know the guy's name.

There was an incident in the residence
of the White House last night.
At approximately 9:00 p.m.,
a domestic employee of the White House
entered the presidential bedroom
and attacked the First Lady.
Thanks to the quick reaction
of the Secret Service,
the First Lady was unharmed,
the threat was immediately neutralized,
and the armed perpetrator
was shot and killed.
Both the president and the First Lady
wish to express their utmost thanks
to the Secret Service

and extend a particular debt of gratitude
to Agent Chelsea Arrington
