DAVID ZABEL: When we wrote the scene
where Valentina assumes that
Daryl and Carol are a couple,
I thought that Norman and Melissa
would have a lot to say about it.
They did not.
They seemed to appreciate the humor
and seem to recognize that
it's a reasonable assumption.
And at the moment, you know,
I think works very charmingly.
Ooh, fun. She's spunky.
I like the camaraderie
between Valentina and Carol,
just kind of, eh,
beginning friendship there.
DAVID ZABEL: In this season,
we were trying to move Carol
a little bit more
towards a place of peace.
So we thought having a
model of that was good
and would be a good relationship,
which I think it turned out to be.
Irina, who plays
Valentina, was fantastic.
You hope things will play out well.
If you're lucky, then things play out
even better than you expected.

Episode four the title
is "Frontier Justice."
It really is an episode
that centers around an attack
on the town of Solaz del Mar.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]

And so it involves a
story about a frontier town
that's trying to defend
itself from marauders,
these primitivos.
Yeah. They see Primitivos coming.
Of course they have to go to battle.
- 3 2 1. Action!
- [PRIMITIVOS YELLING]
DAVID ZABEL: The Primitivos was an idea
that we had in the writers room
that we had a lot of fun with.
We just wanted a group
that was completely amoral,
that had almost no
intent except destruction.
JASON RICHMAN: Here's
kind of a hopeless army.
So it's kind of like a
psycho criminal on the loose.
DAVID ZABEL: We thought
that would be really scary
and it would be true to an apocalypse,
especially some years down the road.
And so out of that
came this kind of idea
of these wild primitivos,
which obviously means primitive people.
[GUNFIRE]
We gave the primitives
a very primal visual.
They're dressed in animal
skins, and they have horns.
And it took quite a while
to come up with a look
that felt real and not too fantastical.

Sebastien Fouassier:
Today, I got really excited,
'cause we have like 60 stunt
people working on this scene.
EDUARDO NORIEGA: You need so
many people to be coordinated,
just to be able to
shoot a scene like this
all together at the same time,
doing the same specific shot.
NORMAN REEDUS: It's a
lot of chaotic movement.
There's a lot of action and adrenaline.
MELISSA MCBRIDE: It was, like,
the longest action sequence
maybe that I can remember.
There were so many setups for that.
SEBASTIEN FOUASSIER: We
have, you know, vehicles.
One is crashing through the gate.
[ENGINE REVVING]
We have primitivos fighting everywhere.
We have Daryl and Carol
also making their way through the gate.
- Brawl.
- Yeah. So Exactly.
And then
There's a fighting style
that I've tried to sort of
adapt and grow along the years.
I choose to have fluid weapons
to duck under arms and swing.
And, you know, it's always
how do I get from this
point to that point
with the least amount of
effort in the smoothest way?
Because we're always running through.
[GROANS]
I try to tell the story with the stunts.
And our stunt team is
really, really good.
I love this choreography.
Paz is so physical and
has a lot of weapons,
and she uses everything for the fight.
So this is the most
exciting part for me.
MELISSA MCBRIDE: Really,
it was one of the most
difficult action sequences
that I've ever shot.
It was complex for the
director to put together.
Paco did a really good job.
Cut, cut, cut!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]
Something ain't right.
DAVID ZABEL: In our constant attempt
to find new ways to use walkers,
we talked about these
catapults that are used
to project the flaming
walkers into the town.
That was an idea of a
medieval attack on a town.
NORMAN REEDUS: They do
it with a light effect.
So there's a crane and a giant ball,
sort of lantern that
flies through the sky.
You know, that's what that looks like.
They hit, and then they spread out.
And they show up, and
they're already out.
Now we're gonna roll
for the last piece of the fight.
We're gonna be shooting
now in that direction, okay?
We had a lot of people on fire.
PACO CABEZAS: And fire, burning.
We had nine zombies on
fire at the same time,
which was pretty good.
[GRUNTS]
PACO CABEZAS: Ready, ready.
NORMAN REEDUS: They coat
themselves in this gel,
and the gel is freezing.
It's a bunch of big stunt guys,
like, you know, looking really scary,
and they're freezing.
We did a few tests with
Greg and his team and my team
where we kind of mix all this energy
and experience together
to make it look cooler.
[WALKERS GROWLING]
MAN: Time-out, time-out!
SEBASTIEN TOUASSIER: The
most challenging thing?
Everything is a challenge. [LAUGHS]
EDUARDO NORIEGA: In this
town, there are some people
who are against El
Alcazar and La Ofrenda.
But there are some of us
who think that it's a
price we have to pay,
because they protect us.
But after this massacre,
there are lots of doubts
about the real protection
that we receive from El Alcazar.

DAVID ZABEL: When we wrote the scene
where Valentina assumes that
Daryl and Carol are a couple,
I thought that Norman and Melissa
would have a lot to say about it.
They did not.
They seemed to appreciate the humor
and seem to recognize that
it's a reasonable assumption.
And at the moment, you know,
I think works very charmingly.
Ooh, fun. She's spunky.
I like the camaraderie
between Valentina and Carol,
just kind of, eh,
beginning friendship there.
DAVID ZABEL: In this season,
we were trying to move Carol
a little bit more
towards a place of peace.
So we thought having a
model of that was good
and would be a good relationship,
which I think it turned out to be.
Irina, who plays
Valentina, was fantastic.
You hope things will play out well.
If you're lucky, then things play out
even better than you expected.

Episode four the title
is "Frontier Justice."
It really is an episode
that centers around an attack
on the town of Solaz del Mar.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]

And so it involves a
story about a frontier town
that's trying to defend
itself from marauders,
these primitivos.
Yeah. They see Primitivos coming.
Of course they have to go to battle.
- 3 2 1. Action!
- [PRIMITIVOS YELLING]
DAVID ZABEL: The Primitivos was an idea
that we had in the writers room
that we had a lot of fun with.
We just wanted a group
that was completely amoral,
that had almost no
intent except destruction.
JASON RICHMAN: Here's
kind of a hopeless army.
So it's kind of like a
psycho criminal on the loose.
DAVID ZABEL: We thought
that would be really scary
and it would be true to an apocalypse,
especially some years down the road.
And so out of that
came this kind of idea
of these wild primitivos,
which obviously means primitive people.
[GUNFIRE]
We gave the primitives
a very primal visual.
They're dressed in animal
skins, and they have horns.
And it took quite a while
to come up with a look
that felt real and not too fantastical.

Sebastien Fouassier:
Today, I got really excited,
'cause we have like 60 stunt
people working on this scene.
EDUARDO NORIEGA: You need so
many people to be coordinated,
just to be able to
shoot a scene like this
all together at the same time,
doing the same specific shot.
NORMAN REEDUS: It's a
lot of chaotic movement.
There's a lot of action and adrenaline.
MELISSA MCBRIDE: It was, like,
the longest action sequence
maybe that I can remember.
There were so many setups for that.
SEBASTIEN FOUASSIER: We
have, you know, vehicles.
One is crashing through the gate.
[ENGINE REVVING]
We have primitivos fighting everywhere.
We have Daryl and Carol
also making their way through the gate.
- Brawl.
- Yeah. So Exactly.
And then
There's a fighting style
that I've tried to sort of
adapt and grow along the years.
I choose to have fluid weapons
to duck under arms and swing.
And, you know, it's always
how do I get from this
point to that point
with the least amount of
effort in the smoothest way?
Because we're always running through.
[GROANS]
I try to tell the story with the stunts.
And our stunt team is
really, really good.
I love this choreography.
Paz is so physical and
has a lot of weapons,
and she uses everything for the fight.
So this is the most
exciting part for me.
MELISSA MCBRIDE: Really,
it was one of the most
difficult action sequences
that I've ever shot.
It was complex for the
director to put together.
Paco did a really good job.
Cut, cut, cut!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]
Something ain't right.
DAVID ZABEL: In our constant attempt
to find new ways to use walkers,
we talked about these
catapults that are used
to project the flaming
walkers into the town.
That was an idea of a
medieval attack on a town.
NORMAN REEDUS: They do
it with a light effect.
So there's a crane and a giant ball,
sort of lantern that
flies through the sky.
You know, that's what that looks like.
They hit, and then they spread out.
And they show up, and
they're already out.
Now we're gonna roll
for the last piece of the fight.
We're gonna be shooting
now in that direction, okay?
We had a lot of people on fire.
PACO CABEZAS: And fire, burning.
We had nine zombies on
fire at the same time,
which was pretty good.
[GRUNTS]
PACO CABEZAS: Ready, ready.
NORMAN REEDUS: They coat
themselves in this gel,
and the gel is freezing.
It's a bunch of big stunt guys,
like, you know, looking really scary,
and they're freezing.
We did a few tests with
Greg and his team and my team
where we kind of mix all this energy
and experience together
to make it look cooler.
[WALKERS GROWLING]
MAN: Time-out, time-out!
SEBASTIEN TOUASSIER: The
most challenging thing?
Everything is a challenge. [LAUGHS]
EDUARDO NORIEGA: In this
town, there are some people
who are against El
Alcazar and La Ofrenda.
But there are some of us
who think that it's a
price we have to pay,
because they protect us.
But after this massacre,
there are lots of doubts
about the real protection
that we receive from El Alcazar.
