Haunted Collector (2011) s03e06 Episode Script
Spirits Of Gettysburg - headless Horseman
- On this episode - Fire! - Fourscore and seven years ago.
Of Haunted Collector.
Welcome to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
We found forks and knives embedded in the floor.
That one terrified me.
Whoever had this didn't want someone else to get in there.
Here we are in Winfield, West Virginia.
We've personally seen a headless horseman in this area.
He was beheaded by a cannonball.
It is creepy out here.
- Hello? - Whoa! Anyone down there? What the heck is that? - Look at that! - You have got to be kidding me.
My name is John Zaffis.
For over forty years I've been helping people with their paranormal problems.
I found that spirits can attach themselves to objects - Whoa! There it goes! There it goes! - Oh my God! And make life a living hell.
That's where my team comes in.
My son Chris, my daughter Aimee.
Brian, my tech guy, Jason, my researcher.
And Jesslyn, my investigator.
- My job? - What is that? Don't touch that thing.
Find the haunted item and remove it.
Because I am the Haunted Collector.
Well, what do you think of this? This came in from Joshua Tree in California.
And he swears he sees a ghost in there.
What is it? To be honest with you, I just think that it's an overexposed photograph.
A lot of times that's what happens when the lens is left open.
Is it something paranormal? I really don't think so.
- Hey.
- Hey.
What's up? Not much.
We got a video in from Michelle from Gettysburg.
- Ah, Gettysburg.
- Let's take a look.
Hi, John, my name's Michelle.
I've been a manager here at the Inn at Herr Ridge for almost 15 years.
Recently, we've had some paranormal activity that's escalated.
Numerous people, including myself, have seen forks and knives embedded in the floor.
There's been many reports from staff, as well as bed and breakfast guests, of a limb from the knee down going through the wall.
All of this really scares a lot of our guests and our staff.
We've had numerous staff members quit because of it.
It's making it very hard to run a business.
John, I'm really hoping that you and your team can come out and help us find out what's really here.
Because a lot of us are really scared.
Well, Chris, why don't you get a hold of the rest of the gang, and let's all head down there.
All right, sounds good.
All right, guys, here we are in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
This was one of the bloodiest battles that ever took place.
July first through the third in 1863.
A lot of buildings here have a lot of activity, and I think you all can understand why.
Well, the stories about the battle were no exaggeration.
According to records on both sides, Union and Confederate, there was over 50,000 soldiers who were hurt or killed.
Well, the Inn we're working at was built in 1815, and it sat on a road that traveled West.
It was a very lawless area at that time, and there could've been a lot of criminals and transients through the area and through the Inn.
Well, we gotta see what we can find out.
Let's get into it.
- Cool.
- All right.
- Hi, Michelle? - Yes.
- John Zaffis.
- Hi, John, how are you? - This is my daughter, Aimee.
- Hi.
Hi, Aimee.
Welcome to the Inn at Herr Ridge.
Come on in.
Well, Michelle, can you tell me exactly what is happening, in the building and some of the history? That'll help us out.
Basically, the house was built in 1815.
In 1828, Frederick Herr bought it, and he opened up the rooms upstairs.
During the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the house was actually seized, by the Confederates and became the first Confederate hospital.
Here of lately, the scary activity has picked up.
I kinda wanna know what's going on.
So, Michelle, tell us exactly what's happening in this area.
In this area, there's been numerous mornings where there's nobody in the house, nobody's staying here.
We came into this room here And we found forks and knives Completely embedded in the floor.
It's almost violent in nature.
- Have you ever experienced it? - Yes.
That one terrified me a little bit.
Back here we have a trap door in a closet, which is from when the house was built in 1815.
Supposedly a bank robber Davey Lewis, had a counterfeit ring.
And evidently he was making counterfeit bills in the crawlspace down there.
Is there anything that happened right in this area to anybody? Um, we have had staff and dinner guests, experiencing where the trap doors creeped open a little bit.
And then the door just slams on its own.
This is room one.
This is the room that most of the activity occurs in.
A staff member and I were coming in to clean this room.
As soon as I almost got to the doorway itself The door literally slammed in my face.
The girl that was in here let out a bloodcurdling scream.
She ran out and she quit that day.
Hey, jobs aren't easy to come by today.
You really gotta be terrified to quit your job, lose your income.
We really got to dig in to find out what happened up in that room That people are so terrified that they can't even do their jobs in there.
Have any of the other staff witnessed any of this? Our Chef Kyle has actually physically witnessed strange apparitions in the building.
I was actually standing right over there in the kitchen.
It was about seven o'clock in the morning, and I saw what appeared to be a guest.
But he was dressed in a duster, which was of the era of The Civil War, which is a little abnormal.
And he had a hat on and he walked to the front of the porch And then he just kinda disappeared off onto the porch.
I looked everywhere and we could not find the guest.
There was no one in the parking lot.
There was no one on the porch.
And what about the rest of the guests, were they all accounted for? Yeah, everyone was still in bed at that time in the morning.
This is an authentic Civil War rifle found downstairs in the building.
It's been here for as long as the house has been here.
This is an Enfield rifle.
It's a .
57 caliber known for its accuracy.
It was used by both the Confederate and Union armies, but mostly the Union Army.
So, that would be a great prize for a Confederate soldier after the war was over.
Up here in this area we've had numerous reports, from staff members, as well as guests Of a leg from the knee down.
That looked like to be a Confederate soldier's leg, because of the stripe down the side of the pant leg - Mm hmm.
- That actually went through the wall.
Wow.
You know anything about this area up here? Actually, during the Battle of Gettysburg, rooms three and four, were the amputation rooms.
Once the limbs were removed, they were thrown out the back window, into an awaiting wagon and buried on the property.
This pair of scissors we found buried under the house.
And we believe that it was used in the battle, or during the surgical procedures here.
Well, they didn't really have a way to sterilize, their surgical instruments back then and a lot times the surgeons would literally just wipe them on their already bloody pants and cause more infection throughout the soldiers.
Oh, wow.
Okay, Michelle, you've got a lot to cover here and this is a very big piece of property.
So, I'm gonna get the team in here now, so you can go back to running this place and have a little peace in here.
Thank you.
This is a very big place, so we have to do a thorough sweep of the building.
Brian and Chris will be checking out the whole first floor.
And I'll be working with Jesslyn on the second floor.
I wanna check out room one and that hallway.
Well, Jess, this pair of scissors is one of the items.
Are you getting anything off of it? I'm just curious.
No E.
M.
F.
All right, this is the poltergeist utensil room.
You think a gust could come in from somewhere and maybe knock things over? I don't know.
That's quite a gust.
I mean, there's one thing like this.
It's stuck in the floor, or did it kind of come up, and with purpose get stuck in the floor? For the most part I'm not getting any abnormal readings.
Jess, this gun was left behind.
They were able to actually date it back to The Civil War.
- Are you getting anything off it? - Uh uh.
I haven't gotten a single E.
M.
F.
reading since we walked in this place.
- Nothing.
- It's a very quiet night.
It's hit or miss a lot of times.
Although we didn't come up with much during our initial sweep.
With so much activity reported here, I think it's worth continuing the investigation through the night.
All right, Chris, get your stuff.
I definitely what you staying here tonight all alone.
Brian, get the surveillance going.
Get that all set up.
Let's see what's actually happening.
- All right, I'll grab my stuff.
- I'll get the cameras prepped.
All right, buddy, we got all the cameras set up.
All right.
The other cameras are monitoring the rest of the house.
This room is different.
You're gonna be alone in this room.
This is gonna be the only camera that's watching you in the room.
- All right, man, see you in the A.
M.
- All right, buddy.
Recording in room one.
Chris staying for the night.
[Knocking.]
What the [Bleep.]
is that? Nothing over there.
[Creaking.]
[Bleep.]
, what's that? Hello? Is anyone down there? [Door slamming.]
What the hell was that? Hello? Who's in here? Oh my God! Hello? Is anyone down there? [Door slamming.]
What the hell was that? I heard something coming from over here.
Oh my God! I'm pretty sure that sound was from this trap door.
I wanna open it.
I don't have the equipment right now to search down there.
This is all kinda creeping me out.
I'm gonna try and go get some more sleep.
Last night my brother thought that he heard the trap door to the crawlspace slam, and that's where bank robber Davey Lewis supposedly ran a counterfeiting ring.
So, Jason and I invited historian Bob Alcorn to the Inn.
Hopefully, he can give us more information about Lewis.
Davey Lewis was known to be borderline crazy.
A very nasty, very unscrupulous guy.
He had a partner in crime.
A fella named Joseph Connelly.
They had a counterfeiting operation run from right around here.
But it appears that Davey Lewis held out on Connelly.
Basically, he was robbing from his partner.
Whoa.
Davey Lewis claimed to have had a lot of money stashed all over the County.
Lewis had these different stashes of money.
Did anybody ever find any of these? - Did he tell anybody where they were? - My knowledge nobody's ever found those.
- Interesting.
- That's crazy.
So, we have these really shady characters, David Lewis and his partner Connelly.
There was a lot of counterfeiting going on, and the fact that Davey Lewis hid this money from his partner.
I think that could be adding to some of the negative energy, that people are experiencing here.
Wow, you got some heavy-duty information there, guys.
I'm very curious.
I want to focus in on David Lewis and Connelly.
If these guys hid stuff all over the place, if there's a lot of contraband, and if they did spend time here Maybe I'll go grab the metal detector and look a little further.
Brian, that's a good idea.
Let's jump right into it, guys, all right? Tonight, Brian will check out the crawl space underneath the trap door.
Aimee and Jess will investigate the bar.
Jason will man the monitors.
And Chris and I will look into room one.
I think the first thing I want to do is check out that crawl space.
Given all that we know now, I figure I'm gonna go down there.
I'm gonna poke around for a little bit with a metal detector.
- Why don't you do some E.
M.
F.
down here.
- Okay.
All right, here I go.
Damn.
I'm gonna start at the end of the bar.
I don't have much E.
M.
F.
This whole wall has high E.
M.
F.
Hmm.
I'm starting to get some E.
M.
F.
readings, too.
There we go.
This case Has power being run to it.
So there's a lot of electricity being pumped out of here.
I think you're right.
It's wiring.
[Beeping.]
[Beeping.]
It's a rock.
Are you still with me? Yeah, we're here, Bri.
What's going on? I just dug up scrap metal.
We're getting no activity up here.
Why don't you meet me at the entrance.
I'm coming out.
Take this.
It's a little dusty down there.
There's a lot of dust, there's a lot of dirt, scrap metal, and power lines.
- Hmm.
- You wanna try the kitchen? - Yeah.
- Let's do that.
What did you actually hear? What did it sound like? It sounded pretty much - Pretty much like that.
- Yeah.
And I came and checked it.
Came out here and looked around.
I even called out, but nobody was here.
Nobody was even close to here.
What else? A while later, I couldn't tell because I fell back asleep but, I heard a noise that kind of woke me up, and I didn't know what it was.
What the heck is that? And as I was walking around I - Hey, John, are you there? - Hey, buddy, what's up? Hey, buddy, I just had something come across the monitors.
Okay, we're on our way up.
- Hey, guys.
- What you got there, Junior? I'm not even gonna tell you guys what I saw, I just want you to watch it.
- Whoa! - Look at that! - What the hell is that? - You have got to be kidding me.
- Whoa! - Look at that! - What the hell is that? - You have got to be kidding me.
Play that back again.
- What the hell is that? - I don't know what it is.
It looks like it's coming and going into that doorway underneath the staircase where the little trap door is.
- Yeah.
- Nobody was even near there.
All right, let's head down and go check that out.
I'll keep an eye on you guys.
Yeah, it was right around here.
All right.
- I'm not getting anything.
- Okay.
Whoa! I just got a huge hit.
There's something in there, actually.
- Here, can you point this up at that? - Yeah.
What's that? Well, definitely a key.
Let me see.
Okay, down here.
I'm just curious, Chris.
- Whoa.
- Wow! This definitely has some type of energy attached to it.
That thing's going off.
Well, I think tomorrow we'll go take this to somebody to see what we can find out.
Sounds good.
I'm meeting with Erik Dorr.
He's got over twenty years experience dealing with antiques and items.
He runs a local museum down here.
I'm hoping he can share some information on the age of this key, and what it was actually used for.
Well, this is a really unusual key.
This is called a Bramah key.
And this was made in about 1784.
And this was marketed as the pick-proof lock.
Mm hmm.
The size of this tells me this is probably for a box.
Now, would this be kind of a universal key? Or is this designed for one specific chest? Each one of these was unique to the lock that it fit.
You know, you can see these, these little holes here vary in size.
So, it was manufactured for a specific lock.
It was definitely expensive.
- So, whoever had this had some money.
- Okay.
And whoever had it also didn't want someone else to get in there.
Thanks, John.
Can this be tying in with Davey Lewis and Connelly? Not a hundred percent sure, but I can't rule it out.
Michelle, there's been quite a bit of activity that took place, to both nights that we were in here investigating.
And we captured a piece of video footage I would like to show ya.
Okay.
I want you to watch what happens here.
Wow.
Well, to me it looks like it came right across and went right into that closet.
And when we started poking around up in there, we actually had found something.
It's an old key.
Jason and Aimee were digging into all the history about the Inn.
And David Lewis, you're very well familiar with that, he had a partner, Connelly.
But Dave was allegedly stealing from this Connelly.
And he kept a lot for himself.
Is there an area here that he could've buried a lot of the, money that he had stolen? And if this was Lewis' key, was that shadow figure Connelly's spirit trying to find this? Wow.
We're really not gonna know one hundred percent.
That's amazing.
Absolutely amazing.
What I would like to do at this point in time is, I want to present that key to the Inn.
Once that recognition is given, a lot of times that Negative energy can actually calm right down.
We'll gladly accept this and display it.
- Thank you very much.
- All right.
I'm so happy that John came out and did his investigation.
I'm hoping what happens is some of the negative energy calms down a little bit.
By being able to hang the key and display it, closes a chapter in the history of this building.
Hi, John, my name's Bill.
I live in Winfield, West Virginia.
On our land we have a home that was built in 1841.
The house has been empty for the last several decades, but we're currently in process of trying to renovate, with the plan of turning it into a bed and breakfast.
I grew up on this land and have been around this area for most of my life, and strange things have always occurred at the house.
But in the last several months, we've really noticed an escalation.
Full-body apparitions have floated above people.
And also there have been reportings of a headless horseman, riding through the area at night.
We have a lot time and energy and money invested in this project, and if we can't make the bed and breakfast work, we're afraid that we're gonna lose it.
John, we could really use your help, trying to figure out what's going on in this house.
Now, we're going to investigate, an old historical piece of property built by John Bowyer.
That was a very prominent family in the area.
Several generations have lived on this property.
They'd like to restore the piece of property, but the activity is so bad that they can't even stay in it.
- Hey, Bill.
- Hi.
- John Zaffis.
- John, thank you for coming out.
- My daughter Aimee.
- Pleasure to meet you.
- You like to come in, have a look around? - Absolutely.
As you can see here, it's the John Bowyer house built by one of my great ancestors.
It's been in the family for 180 years.
Okay.
What we've seen here is a lot of different experiences.
In a lot of the windows of the house have been apparitions.
People have heard sounds in the house from footsteps creaking, a whispering sound.
You know, we've personally seen blood on some of the steps.
Definitely a small pool of blood and little drops.
And I just wonder if it is blood, whose blood is it? My grandfather and father see a headless horseman.
He was beheaded by a cannonball.
It is creepy out here.
- What is it? - It looks like a graveyard.
Huh! Did you die in battle? [Growling.]
What the hell is going on around here? We've personally seen blood on some of the steps.
Definitely a small pool of blood and little drops.
Okay.
A lot times in these abandoned houses, you're going to get rusty water that could be mistaken for blood.
So, we're going to have to put these claims to the test.
Several of the items here have been here since mid-nineteenth century.
Mm-hmm.
An old tea pot, a coffee grinding device.
Ah.
Here you'll see a portrait of Jerome Toledo Bowyer.
Jerome was a soldier for the army of Northern Virginia, and he served in the cavalry during The Civil War.
Oh.
The Civil War culture has a very rich history throughout our region.
John and Aimee, you're in the parlor room now of the house.
People have always been very uncomfortable in this room.
Perhaps one of the things we've always figured was Aunt Nonnie's portrait here.
Her name was Leonora.
It got shortened by the children to Nonnie.
The picture, as you walk in, the eyes actually follow you all the way across the room.
It's always made people very, very uncomfortable to come in here.
Well, Bill, it's very common with paintings the way they're perceived.
People can be standing here, then here, then here, and they feel that the eyes are actually following them.
It's actually an optical illusion.
One of the things that has happened, and we were younger, my best friend was sleeping here one night.
And woke up to actually an apparition of an older woman, that he always thought was Aunt Nonnie.
So, you've been frequenting this place since you were a kid.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, at six, seven years old probably.
Has anything odd ever happened to you here? We had a group of us over here one night and I fell asleep in the room and, at some point during the night woke up kinda startled and just felt a Kind of a pressure, you know, pushing down on me, and there was a woman leaning over the bed.
It was dressed a little bit different.
A longer, you know, petticoat type of dress.
Just kinda froze up and closed my eyes and when I, you know, opened 'em back up, she was gone and the pressure was gone.
- Could your eyes have been playing tricks? - There's a difference when your mind's playing a trick on you and someone's actually there you know, a presence is in the room with you, it's pretty frightening.
Jerome Toledo Bowyer, that you guys saw inside, actually had a little bit of a fascination with death, and made several tombstones for himself.
Before eventually building a mausoleum and winding up being buried in that out in the Winfield cemetery.
Well, it's not uncommon.
A lot of times with family plots, especially prominent families.
They will pre-make the markers, and have them set in place so no one else has to worry about it.
Another one of the legends that we have always dealt with here, my grandfather and father told us about seeing headless horseman in this area.
My grandfather heard, my father heard, and up to our generation has heard, the hoof steps of a horse come down through the old path here.
And I, you know, on more than a dozen occasions have seen a headless rider, and every time I see this, it sends a chill down my spine.
Bill, do you know anything about the headless horseman? We are not sure of an identity.
We've always assumed it was a Civil War soldier.
My grandfather and father talked about a northern soldier.
But, you know, we really don't know.
All right, Bill, we're gonna bring the team in here.
Let's see what we can find out for ya.
All right, thank you, John.
I appreciate you coming.
Okay.
The Bowyer house has a lot of rich history, and has been the subject of some strange stories.
The question is, what is fiction and what is fact? Tonight, Brian and I will investigate the living room.
While Jason and Chris will check out the parlor room and the stairway.
There's, what was her name? Leonora? Yeah, that was the lady that apparently Mike saw sitting on the bed when he was staying here one night.
Let's see if we get any readings off this.
I'm getting nothing, man.
It's just completely flat.
Here's the staircase where they said they saw the blood coming down.
Do you have the U.
V.
function on that? Thanks.
If there's blood here, this will pick it up.
I'm just gonna cruise.
I'm not seeing anything.
Just because it's not happening right now doesn't mean, that what they saw wasn't real.
Where should we start? You know what? I think we'll start here in the front living room area over here.
What's the deal with this portrait here? Well, this is a Civil War photograph of Jerome Bowyer.
What's interesting is that he had an obsession with death.
He had made several different grave markers, and finally he ended up building a mausoleum that he is entombed in now.
Hmm.
- What do you think E.
V.
P.
Session? - Let's try it around the items.
Let's see.
Okay.
And Starting session now.
Are you happy that the house is still in the family? Did this belong to you? Did you die in battle? [Growling.]
What the hell was that? That sounded like it was definitely coming from right out there.
What's out here? Oh, there's that tombstone.
What the hell is going on around here? What's out here? Oh, there's that tombstone.
What the hell is going on around here? - Let's go check that out.
- Shutting down.
Okay, let's go.
Here's the window.
So, there it is, John.
Yeah, right there.
That's Jerome's marker.
That definitely sounded like it was coming from right out here.
Could somebody have come by, tripped over it, and kicked it? Well, anything's possible.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
I think we need to dig in a little deeper about this Jerome.
All righty.
During last night's investigation, there was a lot of indication that we should be looking more into Jerome Bowyer.
So, me and Aimee are gonna meet with Cheryl.
She's the President of the local historical society here in Winfield.
Jerome was well educated.
He had a law degree.
He never married.
He never had children.
He owned coal mines in Winfield in 1889.
We know Jerome served in The Civil War.
Could you tell us more about his service? Well, he was a General, probably an honorary General.
Do you know if he was ever in battle? No battles or anything like that.
So, we know that Jerome Bowyer was involved in The Civil War, although he never saw battle.
So, moving forward I'm not really sure where this is leading as far as the headless horseman apparition is concerned.
But we're gonna have to look further into it.
Hey.
- We had an idea.
- Okay.
Since there are sightings of the headless horseman, we thought by riding horses on the path that he allegedly takes, maybe we could get some insight into where he's going or why.
Well, I think that's a great idea.
If anything comes up or anything, give us a holler and let's see what happens.
- All right.
- Cool.
Why have people reported seeing a headless horseman in this area? And is the Bowyer family somehow involved in this disturbance? We still have a lot of questions with no answers.
Tonight, Aimee and Jason will search the trail behind the property.
Chris will man the monitors.
And Brian, Jess, and I will cover the second floor bedroom.
It got so dark.
It is creepy out here.
Where do you think this trail goes? I don't know.
We'll find out soon, though.
I think we should just keep on going until the end.
Sounds good to me.
Let's try an E.
V.
P.
Session right here.
Okay, powering on.
Go ahead, man.
Can you start out by telling us your name? Can you tell us how you passed away? Can you tell us what year it is? Can you play that back, Brian? Let's see.
Okay.
Can you start out by telling us your name? [Whispering.]
- What is that? - I heard that, too.
I thought I heard humming.
Can you tell us how you passed away? [Whispering.]
There it is again.
Can you tell us what year it is? [Whispering.]
- Started to hear it right there, too.
- Mm hmm.
I'm not quite sure what it's saying, but let's go down and check out Nonnie's room.
- We'll do another one down there.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- All right.
Hold on a second.
Aims, it looks like we're coming to a clearing here.
What is it? It looks like a graveyard.
Are you kidding me? This is the end of the road, yeah? - Yeah.
- That's crazy.
Let's check it out.
Okay.
- Some pretty old graves.
- Yeah.
Wow, 1862.
Oh, look at this.
World war one.
Jase, what's that up there? It looks like a mausoleum or something.
Can you shine the light up there? Huh! Bowyer.
Jerome Bowyer.
Let's give John a call.
John, you there? Go ahead, Jay, we're all here.
So, me and Aimee are in a cemetery right now.
Basically, where the trail led us, and Jerome Bo Mausoleum.
Okay, dude, can you repeat that? [Static.]
Rosie.
Rosie.
- What the hell was that? - What was that? Did you guys make that noise? No, that wasn't on our end, dude.
Okay, that was freaking weird, man.
Brian, let's listen back to that.
Well, whatever it is, hopefully this got it.
[Static.]
Rosie.
I'm hearing Rosie coming out of that.
I got the freaking goose bumps from that one.
- Jason, Aimee, you there? - Yeah, we're here, buddy.
Hey listen, we were just listening back to the recorder, and to me it sounds like the name of Rosie.
Do me a favor.
Check around there on some of the grave markers, and see if there's a family member by the name of Rosie.
Rosie? Okay, you got it.
- Anything so far? - Nope.
- Hey, John, you there? - What's up, buddy? Uh, we haven't found anything with Rose or Rosie on it.
Okay, why don't you guys pack up and head on back over here.
All right, sounds good.
Let's see if we can't get any more information here.
Let's try an E.
V.
P.
Session right over here, Bri.
Here we go.
Are any of these items on the table important to you? [Beeping.]
Check 'em out, Brian.
Whatever it is, this is going off.
You're getting high readings off of it, aren't ya? And that looks like a very old military patch to me.
I'm not quite sure what the hell's going on but, I just got to get that to somebody tomorrow and see what else they can tell me about that.
- Let's wrap up.
- Okay.
We got a lot of activity around this shoulder patch.
Today, I'm meeting with Jim Mitchell.
He's the Curator here at the State Museum, and he's also a Civil War buff.
It's a shoulder board of a Union Army staff Lieutenant Colonel.
It would've been worn up on the shoulder, and another one on each side.
Mm hmm, one of the stories is a headless horseman.
People claim that they do actually see him on the land.
We're trying to figure out how all this is tying in.
Well, there's one instance of Lieutenant Colonel Julian Garesh, that rode with General Rosecrans.
They were at the Battle of Stones River in Tennessee.
Rosecrans and Lieutenant Colonel Julian Garesh were riding together When Garesh was beheaded by a cannonball.
It's from Tennessee.
How did it get all the way up here? After the war, Rosecrans came to West Virginia and owned coal mines.
I would imagine he would've kept it as souvenir.
- What was that name again? - Rosecrans.
Old Rosie.
During our investigation, Rosie came over the walkies.
Is this Rosecrans? I don't know, but I think I got some good information for Bill.
Well, Bill, we did a few experiments and we did start getting activity.
And I'd like you to listen to an E.
V.
P.
Okay.
Rosie.
- What are you hearing? - Rosie.
- Yeah, very definitely is there.
Yeah.
- Yeah.
.
We did have a lot of activity, around an item here in the room.
And I'd like to show that to you right now.
- Shoulder board for a uniform? - Yes.
This one specifically was for a staff Lieutenant Colonel.
There's one in particular that died at the Battle of Stones River in Tennessee, and he died when he was beheaded by a cannonball.
Mm.
And at the time that that happened he was accompanied by a fellow officer, who was known as General Rosecrans.
- Rosecrans went by the name Old Rosie.
- Mm.
There's a chance that perhaps he brought it back as a memento, or a keepsake of his fellow officer.
Now, how this shoulder board ended up in here we're not gonna quite ever know that.
But could this have belonged to the beheaded soldier? Is this why the headless horseman is being seen? Because it wanted this item discovered? I can't rule that out whatsoever.
Bill, I'd like to ask you what would you like to do? If that's something that you can take out of here and will solve our problem, we would sure like that.
Hopefully, some of that activity can calm down.
- Thank you, John.
- Thank you for having us.
The turmoil of the war has a lasting effect, not only on the living but also the dead.
If the restless souls of the North and the South, still linger at the Bowyer house I hope by removing the shoulder board This haunting can finally come to an end.
