Alert: Missing Persons Unit (2023) s03e07 Episode Script
April
[MAN] It's beautiful, April.
It's not weird?
[CHUCKLING]
Shopping for engagement
rings with your ex-wife?
It's weird.
[CHUCKLES]
But good.
You deserve a happily-ever-after.
Jeffrey is a lucky guy.
Oh! I gotta go pick up Jenny.
I'll let her know you're on your way.
I'll see her tomorrow. Bye.
No, no. He hasn't
asked me yet, but he will.
Truth is, I think Jeffrey loves you
as much as he loves me.
Hold on, kiddo. My keys are somewhere.
[SHRIEKS]
Hey.
Here you go.
Thank you.
- How you doing?
- Hi.
- Good. How are you?
- I'm good.
What's up, buddy?
Wait, muffins? Really?
No breakfast burritos, or tater tots,
or breakfast sandwiches,
or breakfast?
Muffins are breakfast.
Muffins are lumps that
fester in your stomach.
Even Ursula agrees.
Look, he's disappointed in you.
No, he loves me.
Yeah, well, there's
no accounting for taste.
I think he wants you to pick him up.
You should You should pick him up.
No, I don't need to pick him up.
- No?
- No.
I'm not gonna tell you
my news, then. It's okay.
Okay, I'll pick him up.
Look, I picked him up. What's the news?
I got a job offer.
- Oh, yeah?
- Mm-hmm.
From who?
Can't say.
Okay. Our old bosses?
Can't say.
'Kay. What do they want you to do?
Well, I'm not saying it's them,
and I certainly am not
telling you what they want me to do,
but I can tell you
that it's out of town,
at least for a few weeks.
Permanent, if it works out.
This is where you say something.
[STAMMERS] Look. Uh, you know,
based on the
plethora of information
that you just gave me,
it sounds fantastic,
aside from the maybe
"permanently out of town" part.
There is, uh there is another option.
MPU could hire me.
Okay.
That's, uh, something.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
I mean, think about it
I need the money, you need my skillset,
and I would get to stay in town, so
what do you think?
I think that you're
right about the muffins.
[LAUGHS]
No, I will ask Mike. He's
temporarily in charge.
We'll see what he says.
Amazing.
- Yeah?
- That's great.
[KEMI] Any regrets,
turning down the job?
Not just no, but hell no.
- [CHUCKLES]
- I would be drowning
in stress, paperwork
now I get to just sip
my coffee in peace.
- Mm.
- Speaking of
you want some? I just made a fresh pot.
No, thank you. I am
deeply over-caffeinated.
I just had a coffee with
Amy from Admin, so
I thought you hated Amy from Admin?
I do, but she doesn't
know how to keep a secret,
and I want intel
on who Bill Houston is
considering for our new boss.
As long as it's not me, I do not care.
[KEMI SIGHS]
I'm worried.
What if he fills the office
with somebody who fights with us
instead of fights for us?
Then we kill him.
Oh, okay!
Yeah.
Sergeant Sherman?
This gentleman has a
missing person to report.
[JEFFREY] April and I have
been dating for six months.
I honestly never knew I
could fall in love like that,
but her and Jenny are everything to me.
And it's unusual that you
don't hear from her for a day?
Thank you.
Uh, well, It's it's not just that.
My father took a-a bad fall yesterday.
He went to the hospital.
He's in a coma.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
I went to the basement
to get his, um, you
know, his insurance cards,
and I found these photos.
See, I never told my father about April.
He's had issues with women
ever since my mother left,
but that was years ago.
I think he's been
following me, following us.
What's in the box, Jeffrey?
Uh
when I found the photos, I called April.
When I couldn't get a hold of her,
I was frantic.
I started digging around
my father's things,
and I found this box.
Look, I'm scared he, um
I mean, hunting knife, chloroform
that's the kinds of things that you
Where exactly did you find this box?
In his storage area.
I mean, we only moved in two months ago,
so maybe somebody left it behind.
I really don't want to believe
these are my father's things,
but I'm terrified for April, okay?
So, please please,
you have to find her.
So April works at a
high-end furniture showroom.
She didn't show up to work today,
and her phone has been
offline since 2:15 yesterday,
so that's not good.
You find anything on Jeffrey's dad?
Yes, and no.
Walter Evans works
as a building inspector
for the city,
but no records, no debts,
and he likes classical
music and makes bonsais.
[MIKE] That's nice.
Not even a parking ticket on that one.
He is Mr. Clean, but
previous tenant
Joseph Kalinski,
we're looking at a
violent felony record.
You think the creep-bag belongs to him?
Well, he's a definite maybe.
Jason's running him down now.
- [RATTLING]
- What's up with this thing?
There's something inside,
but I can't get it open.
Don't break it.
It's a hidden-compartment box.
- Um
- [RATTLING SOFTLY]
[CLICK] Okay.
Uh
[CLICKING]
[CLACK]
[CLATTERING]
Whoa.
You thinking what I'm thinking?
- "The Ring Bearer."
- Yup.
That's 10 rings 10 murdered women.
And April might be the next victim.
All right, I'm calling Homicide.
Put out the alert now.
[ALERT BEGINS BLARING]
[BLARING ALERTS, OVERLAPPING]
[BANGING]
[APRIL PANTING ANXIOUSLY]
[THUMPING]
Hello?
Somebody?
[AIR BLOWING]
[KEMI] Okay, so, our missing person
is April Cook.
Her daughter, Jenny, is thankfully okay.
She was with the ex-husband.
He saw the alert, and he's on his way,
but we need anything that you have
that'll help us find April.
Well, Rachel and I worked on
the Ring Bearer's last three victims.
Um, she took it really hard
not being able to find this guy.
You will see why.
10 years, 10 killings
each of our victims was
married, but trying to leave.
Some had filed for divorce,
some had restraining orders.
Their bodies look so pristine.
The Ring Bearer takes his victims
and then leaves them to freeze to death.
Hypothermia is a terrible way to go.
When the core temperature
reaches 91 degrees,
there's confusion, kidney failure,
liver failure.
At 82 degrees, you lose consciousness,
and at 70 degrees, you die.
And the killer dumped the bodies
where their husbands could find them?
Yeah.
- Totally intact
- [HITS KEY]
Except missing
the ring finger
and the wedding band,
and there was always a note
"Till death do us part."
But here's what I don't get.
April divorced two years ago.
Why would he take her now?
I don't know aberration?
Escalation maybe a copycat?
Whichever it is, freezing
to death takes a day,
day and a half, tops.
We don't have a lot of time.
[JASON] Yeah, great.
Actually, not great, but thank you.
All right, the guy who used
to own Walter's house is out,
he's been detoxing the last three weeks
up in some place in Harrisburg.
Well, we need all hands
on deck, so, you know,
maybe if Wayne was on the team
I already told you,
that's a terrible idea.
What is it? Trouble in paradise?
Paradise is fantastic. Why mess with it?
Or maybe, just hear me out,
you don't want her to see
what you're like every day.
That's very astute, okay?
Home is home. Work is
work. Church and state.
[DEEP BREATH]
Well, he doesn't look
like murder material,
but that box was pretty convincing.
Okay, well, he's out of his
coma. Let's wake him up.
Wake him up? What
are you he's sedated.
They said he woke up in
the MRI, and he panicked.
So he's claustrophobic. He's not dead.
Let's rattle his cage.
You got a, um
give me your handcuffs.
- [RATTLING]
- [MIKE SIGHS]
Thanks.
Same old Jason Grant
trying to make his
partner break the rules.
Benedict Arnold.
Good to see you.
I'd love to have a chat, but,
uh, we got a missing woman,
- and this is our prime suspect, so
- Did you happen
to read him his rights
before you cuffed him?
[JASON BLOWS A RASPBERRY]
Did I read him his rl I I
can't remember, honestly,
but if I say yes,
you think he's gonna argue with me?
Some things never change.
Yeah.
Mike Sherman, Gabrielle Bennett.
Never saw a rule she didn't like.
Gotta know 'em to bend 'em.
And that's "Lieutenant Bennett".
Mm.
By the way Ring
Bearer task force is mine.
Walter Evans is mine.
So why don't you two go grab a donut?
[CHUCKLES SOFTLY]
That's funny, because we're cops.
- Oh, got it.
- Actually,
Missing Persons outweighs
a cold-case murder, so why don't you
Hey, hey, may I make a suggestion?
- I'd rather you not.
- No.
Look, we all want to nail
this guy and find April,
so here's a thought.
Maybe we work together?
Yeah, we tried that. It
didn't work out so well.
[SIGHS]
I was his rookie.
[SNICKERING] They They
actually let you train someone?
That's funny.
Just how badly did it end?
Well, I left the force,
and she, uh, she's now a lieutenant,
so you do the math.
Huh!
It must be hard to move
on from a bad relationship.
[SIGHS] I get it.
You see we're divorced,
and you think there's
some dark story between us.
Is there?
We were high-school sweethearts.
We got married too young,
had Jenny too young.
Don't worry, Tommy. She's fine.
She's fine
as long as you find her mother.
Just to get it out of the way,
can you tell me where
you were yesterday?
I was with April ring shopping.
She thinks that Jeffrey's
gonna pop the question.
I know, it seems weird, but
I want her to be happy.
I left to pick up Jenny, and
then soccer and a playdate.
And where were you ring shopping?
A jewelry store in Queen Village.
I left around 2:00.
Jenny said April called her right after,
and Jenny said the call dropped,
but I didn't think
anything of it. I just
Okay, so Queen Village Jeweler is here,
and that is where Tommy left her.
He did say that she
brought him a milkshake,
and it's gotta be from McFarland's,
right here. Oh, great, so if you were
- getting a milkshake from McFarland's
- Uh-huh.
And then you were going
to Queen Village Jeweler
Yes, I would park right here.
- Nice.
- Boom.
Okay, so let's see if
we can track her car
and, if we get lucky, find Walter's.
[MIKE] So what's the story?
What did he do? Kill your cat?
Your brother?
How long have you two been partners?
About two years, give or take?
Mm-hmm.
That's about when it went south for me.
I mean, I don't know. Look at you now
you're pretty young to run
a Major Crimes task force.
In spite of him, not because of him.
Okay.
He ever tell you why he left the PPD?
Yeah, he took a
better-paying job for his family.
[SCOFFS]
What? He did. Now he's back.
Did he mention
that, if he hadn't taken that job,
I would have forced him out?
Yeah, I.A. would've forced me out
because my rookie ratted me out.
Your partner told the truth.
You know, sometimes,
there's parts of the truth
that don't need to be told.
You used a chainsaw to break into
a building with a front
door, without a warrant.
Remember those?
Little pieces of paper that judges sign?
Yeah. I found a murder weapon.
Was it admissible in court?
Who cares? I took
a killer off the street.
And if he hadn't choked on
a ham and cheese in lockup,
he'd be right back out there.
Yeah.
But he choked on a ham
and cheese in lockup.
Okay?
Everything I did,
you knew about, you were a part of it.
Did I have a choice? I was
caught in a vortex of Jason.
[MIKE CHUCKLING DROLLY]
Shut up.
Okay? You're missing
it. She's missing it.
Oh, yeah, I can tell.
Okay, listen.
This doctor said that
whatever drugs this guy is on,
uh, they will not cloud his memory,
so his statement will not be tainted.
Let's wake up Sleeping Beauty now.
Okay, good. This is
how we're gonna play it.
I want you two to take the lead.
Wow, didn't see that coming.
She knows that if we press
this guy about a missing person,
we got a better shot than she will have
trying to pin 10 murders on him.
Amongst your many failings,
stupidity isn't one of them.
Do not bring up the rings.
I want to save that.
- 'Kay.
- Great.
Thanks for everything.
Yeah, you're welcome.
- Mr. Evans, wake up.
- [THWACK]
Come on, wake up. Get up.
You don't look like a doctor.
Mm-mm.
Is he the doctor?
No, I'm not, Walter.
We're cops.
We're here to talk to you
about your son's girlfriend, April.
[MIKE] She's missing, and we were hoping
that you could help us find her.
[PHONE BUZZES]
All right, these are, uh
these are photographs that you took.
Yeah, Kemi, what's up?
That's April.
April.
Jog your memory a little bit?
Huh?
[SIGHS]
I was worried about Jeffrey.
He's been cutting me
out of his life recently,
and so I followed him
how I found out that
he had this other life.
Do you know where April is now?
I'm sorry, I don't.
The truth is, April and I never met.
Then why was your van
seen leaving the garage
where April parked,
right after she disappeared?
That was Kemi. He was there.
That doesn't look good for you, Walter.
[SIGHS]
Okay.
We found the box
the box with the rings in it.
You know what I mean?
Walter Evans.
I am Lieutenant Gabrielle Bennett.
I am informing you
that you are a suspect in
the Ring Bearer Murders.
If you'd like a lawyer,
you may have one.
Anything you say can, and
will, be used against you.
Do you understand?
My son brought you that box, didn't he?
The box that belongs to the Ring Bearer?
Are you admitting
you're the Ring Bearer?
I'm sure that's what he told you,
but no, that is not my box.
I found it, yes,
but it belongs to him.
And yes, I believe that
my son is a serial killer.
So if you want to find April,
you're gonna have to talk to him.
[QUIET ELECTRICAL HUMMING]
[APRIL WHIMPERING]
- [GRUNTING]
- [TEARING]
[KEMI] We're running out of time,
and Jeffrey isn't picking up.
Well, the question is, then,
which one is telling the truth?
Okay, so we have Walter's panel van
in proximity to April's disappearance.
Panel van, as in best-way-
to-transport-a-body van.
I mean, he did have that
van detailed late yesterday,
which suggests that
he is hiding evidence.
Yes, but look at this.
- [CLICK]
- I took
the knife from the box
that Jeffrey brought in,
and I compared it to the markings
on the metacarpi,
where the Ring Bearer cut the fingers.
The killer used a serrated blade.
The knife's not a match.
Are you saying that he
brought us fake evidence?
I mean, he wouldn't
be the first serial killer
to play chicken with the police.
Zodiac, Son of Sam
But the whole April thing,
I mean, they were
dating we saw the photos.
Well, what do we know about this guy?
Uh, okay, um Jeffrey Evans, he's 33,
he's a court reporter,
never married,
and socials are non-existent.
That's kind of odd, for a guy his age.
I mean, the mother did run
out when he was a teenager,
and he's lived with his father
ever since I don't know.
Well, speaking from experience,
that doesn't indicate guilt,
but why is he pointing
us towards his father?
I don't know,
but we need to get
Jeffrey back here now.
- Yeah.
- Interesting. You're calling for my help.
I don't know. The
father says it's the son
the son says it's the father.
Someone's playing us,
and we're running out of time.
Does that mean Mike said yes?
Uh, no um, he said
that your felony record
is kind of an issue, so
I think it's off the table.
Seriously?
I know, I know, I know, it sucks.
But anyway, listen to me,
this guy, Jeffrey Evans,
he's not answering his phone.
If you can hack his data location,
best-case scenario, we find April,
worst-case scenario, we find him, right?
Look, Jay, I hear you,
but you cannot have it both ways
wanting my help and not wanting my help.
- Wayne, come on.
- Look, I got to go,
but I am sure that there's
somebody being paid
to find this woman who can help you.
[ENDS CALL]
[GABRIELLE] So here's
what I'm struggling with, Walter.
It wasn't until you
knew we had the rings
that you gave him up.
Sounds almost like an excuse.
Do you have children?
Either of you?
Yes. I have a stepdaughter.
I bet you'd do anything for her.
I always thought I would
do anything for Jeffrey,
but two weeks ago, I found that box.
I didn't want to believe it,
but I followed him,
trying to understand who he was,
what he was.
That's how I found out about April.
Walter, we have your
van in the parking lot
where she was abducted.
I followed her.
I was t-trying to work
up the nerve to talk to her,
- to warn her.
- "Hey, woman I don't know
the man you're dating
is a serial killer"?
- Yeah.
- I don't see it, Walter.
You're right.
I couldn't find the words, so I left.
And then you go back to
the van and get it detailed?
Why, exactly?
I got back to the parking
lot, and my van was gone.
You know who else has keys?
Jeffrey.
I got back home,
and he confronted me about April,
I confronted him about the box.
You didn't fall.
- He pushed you down the stairs.
- Why didn't you tell us?
[CHOKES UP] He's my son.
He's all I have.
[SIGHS SHAKILY]
Thank you.
So Jeffrey got my calls, and
they're bringing him up now.
- Does he know we know?
- I told him
that we had a lead on April
and that we needed his help.
Look, if this is our guy,
the last thing that we
want is for him to lawyer up,
because then we will never find April.
I told Jason
I wasn't gonna help
with this Ring Bearer case
because Mike doesn't want to hire me,
but I can't help myself, so.
"Mike" doesn't want to hire you?
He's the boss, he made the call.
He's not the boss.
He turned the job down.
That is the exact opposite
of what Jason said.
I'm sure there's a reason or an excuse.
Okay! Uh, so you came in.
I am assuming that's
because you found something?
- Yes. So
- Okay.
The Ring Bearer, his victims
they all went through family court.
Yeah, they all filed for a divorce,
restraining order, or custody.
Yeah, we know.
Well, I hacked the court records.
Did you know
that the court reporter
on all of those cases
was Jeffrey Evans?
[KEMI SIGHS]
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
[KEMI] Well
let's go see just who is playing whom.
Hi.
Jeffrey, thank you
so much for coming in.
Did you find April?
No, but we did find a solid lead.
Why don't I, uh, walk you through it?
Why are you taking me in there?
It's just a place to talk, yeah?
Of course.
Jeffrey!
Down. Down.
- This wasn't
- Down. Down! On the ground!
On the ground, now! All of you!
Everybody!
Stay back, or she dies!
- Listen to him!
- Stay back, or she dies!
Jeffrey, slow down! We
can talk about this. Please!
Are we ready?
[SWAT LEAD] Mr. Evans!
This is Lieutenant Jamal Ravani!
We want to end this quietly and safely.
All I want to know right now
is Detective Adebayo okay?
You realize the problem, right?
You are in a building
filled with police officers.
Whatever happens in this room,
it doesn't end well for you.
All right, hey.
- Jeffrey showed up and took Kemi hostage.
- What?
He's got her barricaded in Helen's lab.
Oh, well, I guess we know
which one's telling the truth.
I hate to say it,
but chances are, your
missing person's dead.
- He's playing with you.
- Come on, let's go, let's go.
[PHONE BUZZING]
We're on our way right now.
[WAYNE] Don't leave the hospital!
Why not? Hold on. Why not?
Jeffrey Evans might be the Ring Bearer,
- but he didn't take April.
- How do you know?
Because, at 2:15 yesterday,
when April was grabbed,
he was on the 13th floor
of the Family Court Building,
according to security
logs, eight eyewitnesses.
- If he didn't take her
- Hold on, hold on.
Listen to me. They got Kemi.
Let us know if anything goes down.
- We'll be there in five minutes.
- Yeah.
- You understand?
- SWAT is on it here, okay?
You guys work your end.
Jay
C says that April has two hours, tops.
All right, all right,
all right, goodbye.
I'm gonna kill somebody.
Let's go bounce this
guy's head off the bed post.
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
Jamal?
I hear this is your guy in there.
That's the theory. What's his ask?
That we find April Cook, or
he kills Detective Adebayo.
What do we know about Adebayo?
[WAYNE] What we know
is that she is the calmest
cop in the building.
If there is anybody that can break
this broken chromosome
of a creep, it is her.
Who the hell are you?
I'm the person that can
hijack the computer in there
so that we can hear and see inside,
and prevent Rambo over here
from risking Kemi's life.
Do it.
Already done.
[GABRIELLE] The video
feed doesn't give much,
but the sound is good.
Yeah, you're welcome,
and yes, I am recording.
Over to you.
[KEMI, ON FEED] You still have choices.
Let me help you.
- [THUMPING]
- [RAGING] God!
[EXHALES SHAKILY]
Jeffrey, what is it that you want?
What do I want?
What I want
is for the MPU to find April.
That's what I want.
Okay.
[LAUGHS]
I'm sorry, I don't believe you.
You don't believe me?
You gave us a box,
and then you made us do the work
that is time wasted.
You wanted us to believe
that your father was the Ring Bearer,
but you didn't even
mention the rings, Jeffrey!
That is more time wasted.
I didn't want it to look
like I was setting him up.
But you are, right?
Nothing I told you wasn't true.
- My father took April.
- Okay, so you're saying
that it's your father, and
he's saying that it's you.
Figuring out the truth
takes time, Jeffrey!
Time!
And now you have made it even worse,
because right now,
all that anyone in that
hallway cares about
is me!
Yeah
well, if they care about
you, I guess they'll find her,
then, won't they?
You have to help them do that.
The Ring Bearer,
if it is you or your father,
he freezes people
and that does not
give them much time.
So what is the truth, Jeffrey?
Is it you
or is it him?
The Ring Bearer is both of us.
We find them,
we kill them together
every single one.
But not this, not April.
That's him.
This is all him.
I love April
[ROARS] and I have no
idea where he's keeping her!
The only thing I know
is that she is running out of time
and so are you.
I have a complicated relationship
with my own father.
He hurt me
and I really wanted to hurt him back.
So I can imagine how you feel,
and I think that you should use that.
If you want to help April
you should hurt your father.
Give us ammunition that
we can use against him.
What do you mean, ammunition?
Walk me through it.
What you did.
To Ellen Forrest.
To Kelsey Whitlock.
To all of them.
[SIGHS HEAVILY]
When my mother left,
my father was furious.
"Women who leave need to be punished,"
that's what he said.
You know, when I started
working at family court,
I realized he was right,
because all it was,
was woman after woman after woman
walking away from their commitments
to their husbands, their kids,
with zero consequences.
And then there was one case
this woman so unremorseful
to the misery of her husband,
it made me
My father said that we
needed to do something,
so we followed her
took her.
The first victim
Cheryl Forbes?
Mm-hmm.
We took her to an old
building that he red-tagged.
It was an old ice-cream factory.
I still remember
the strawberry and
chocolate swirls on the walls.
We locked her in the freezer.
I thought we were just
gonna scare her, but then,
by the time we came
back, she was frozen
dead.
My father said it would
be better this way.
And you believed that?
Yeah, he was right.
After the third one,
when they started
calling us the Ring Bearer,
Philadelphia divorce rates dropped 10%.
Where is this factory?
No, she's not there.
It's always a different building,
a red-tagged one
where we can lock
them in and freeze them.
And now April.
She wasn't supposed to be a victim.
When I met her, everything changed.
I mean, she had left
[SIGHS]
She had left her marriage.
She did
but it was for the better, I mean
for her, her ex, her kid
everybody was happier,
and she made me happy.
But then your father found out.
He said he was trying to save me.
Now I think maybe he was
just afraid of me leaving,
like my mom did.
Listen, we have everything we need.
No more games.
Tell Walter, if he wants a deal,
he gives us April.
He is not making a deal.
I don't want to, either, Jason,
but there's a woman
who dies if we don't.
Two women!
[SIGHING] Okay.
I I I have an idea.
I'm pretty sure you're
not gonna like it, though.
I've been on this for three years.
I've talked to the husbands, the kids.
I've seen the bodies.
I may not like whatever
it is you have to do,
but don't tell me just do it.
Great, more questions?
What, are you guys tag-teaming now?
No, just a little field trip.
Where are you taking me?
To the club. It's gonna be fun.
Yeah, we're gonna dance the night away.
[DOORS BANG]
What What, you're torturing me?
Is that the idea?
I have a high pain threshold.
My mother made sure of that!
We don't really believe in torture.
[JASON] No, but we do believe in karma.
[WALTER] No, no.
All right, Walter, we're gonna
ask you this one more time.
Where's April?
[BREATHES ANXIOUSLY]
Get him.
No, no, no, no!
[SHRIEKS] No!
Oh, no!
No, no, no.
No, no, no, no! No!
No! No! No! No!
[SCREAMS]
No, no, no! No, no, no!
- [BANG]
- Let me out!
[SHRIEKING] Let me out!
Let me out! Lemme out!
[SCREAMING]
Well, this is just hard to listen to.
[MUFFLED SCREAMING] No, no, no!
Let's get him out.
- [TUTTING HIM REPROACHFULLY]
- [WALTER SCREAMING]
You have to be patient. Just wait.
Let me out!
[HYPERVENTILATING]
[SHRIEKING] I'll
talk! I'll talk! I'll talk!
I'll talk!
- I'll talk!
- See?
I'll talk!
- What'd you say?
- I'll
I'll take you to her.
All right, take us where?
No, I'm I'm gonna have to show you,
b because it's a maze.
It's a maze a and
by the time you get there,
if you try to find her by yourselves,
she's going to be dead.
It's your choice.
"Till death do us part"
should mean something.
[JASON] Uh-huh.
Are you married or divorced, Detective?
[LAUGHS MOCKINGLY]
Yeah, someone definitely left you.
Listen to me. Listen to me.
Shut up.
No more talking out of you.
The only thing I wanna
hear from you is "left,"
"right," or "here." Okay?
Where do we go?
- Left.
- Let's go.
We're close,
but before I show you,
I want to talk to my son.
No, no. No more games, Walter.
I want to talk to my son.
[PHONE BUZZES]
Where is she?
[SNAPS] Where is she? Where's April?
[WALTER] I forgive you, Jeffrey.
Sorry, you forgive me?
It didn't have to end this way.
Okay, we're here.
[SHOUTS] Detective,
keep him on the line!
[GATE CREAKS]
[DOOR CREAKS]
That's not good.
That's old bones.
Okay, that's not April.
That's not someone
you put there yesterday.
No, it's not.
[EXHALES, WROUGHT]
But we've come full circle
because she was the first.
That's Jeffrey's mother!
She did leave, Jeff!
I didn't lie about that!
[RAGES] But I found her!
Hey, hey, where's April?
It's all for the best, son!
She would've hurt you eventually.
[SCREAMING] No!
Jeffrey
I'm gonna kill you!
I'm gonna kill you!
Jeffrey, it doesn't mean
that she is dead! Please.
Just stay with me. Stay with me.
He wants her dead!
[QUIETER] If he wants her dead,
she is dead.
[GABRIELLE] We gambled. We lost.
Bring him in.
There's nothing more you guys can do.
[SIGHING]
[WAYNE] Look, April is there.
She is She's right there.
- What are you talking about?
- Look, on that call,
Walter was talking about
things "coming full circle."
Yeah, full circle. He
buried his wife there.
Yeah, but not only that,
he killed her there, okay?
There are tunnels.
Look, those tunnels go
underneath multiple properties.
If they keep going,
they will hit an old
meat-packing plant
a meat-packing plant that
Walter Evans shut down
a month before his wife disappeared.
How does that mean April's there?
I checked the grid.
The plant was red-tagged 15 years ago,
but yet it's still drawing power.
Meat-packing plant would have a freezer.
It does.
Right there.
April, Philly PD!
We need breachers in here.
We're running out of time!
[GRUNTING]
How's that supposed to help us?
You ever see No Country for Old Men?
No, I must've missed that one.
Well, this was my favorite part.
[CANISTER THUMPS]
[JASON GRUNTS]
[THUMP]
Like that.
[HANDLE CLATTERS ON FLOOR]
I've got a pulse.
Get EMTs in here!
Where are those blankets?
[VOICES OVERLAPPING]
[PHONE RINGS]
[RINGING]
[RINGING]
Hello?
Detective Adebayo,
this is Lieutenant Bennett.
- Are we on speaker?
- We are.
Jeffrey Evans, we found April.
She is on her way to the hospital.
She is conscious, and
she will survive this.
- [EXHALES]
- If you need verification,
you can stream any local news station.
[LAUGHS DELIRIOUSLY]
That's wonderful news.
We held up our end of the bargain.
It's time to let Detective Adebayo go.
Here's what I know, Jeffrey.
These killings they
meant something to you.
You were punishing women
who did something
you found unforgivable.
The Ring Bearer has a moral compass.
I don't agree with it
but I understand it.
Detective Adebayo,
she doesn't fit the profile, Jeffrey.
If you kill her,
you're no longer making a point
you're just a murderer.
[PHONE LINE CLICKS]
[RUMBLING]
[LOCK TURNS]
[KEMI] Weapons down! We're clear!
Stand down!
Everyone, stand down!
Jeffrey Evans
you're under arrest.
Tell April I loved her.
- [HANDCUFFS CLICK]
- I really did.
I know.
[QUIETLY] Thank you.
Kemi!
Oh!
I was so worried.
Are you okay?
Child, I've had better days.
[BOTH LAUGHING]
Oh, my god.
- Hey!
- Hi!
I guess you and I have
something in common.
[BOTH LAUGHING]
Let's start our own support group.
Yeah.
I really need a drink.
[C LAUGHS]
- Whatever you need. Yeah.
- Yeah.
[KEMI] I don't want a fuss, please.
I don't want a fuss, either.
I just want to have a drink.
That's it.
Well, I think we all earned it.
Room for one more?
Absolutely, Lieutenant.
Thanks.
All right, this goes out to
Detective Kemi Adebayo,
who saved that woman.
Above and beyond, so thank you.
I also wanted to thank
our hacker friend
Wayne?
Does anyone know where she is?
Yeah, where's, uh, where's Wayne?
[EXHALES]
I'm I'm sorry, what what
does that mean?
Look, if you're not gonna
be completely truthful,
you maybe should keep
us all in the in the loop.
[JASON STAMMERING]
She was rattled about
Mike not wanting to hire her,
and I I I might have
mentioned, uh, that he's not the boss.
Seriously?
You told her I said no?
I'm not sure what I said, exactly.
[MIKE] That's convenient.
Go do damage control.
Go.
[JASON SIGHS]
- Thank you for holding it down.
- Mm-hmm.
- Okay.
- It was a lot.
Just Just go fix your mess.
Sorry.
I'll walk with you a minute.
Okay. After you.
[QUIETLY] Okay, so what's
the story with those two?
She was his rookie.
They let Jason train somebody?
I said the same thing.
So let me guess
you're gonna tell me I took it too far?
"Sometimes too far is just far enough."
Oh, you're quoting me? That's funny.
You thought I wasn't listening?
Like I had a choice.
Look, I'm just glad that
you learned something.
Listen, Jason, for what it's worth,
I did tell I.A. they
were making a mistake.
I went to bat for you.
I just didn't lie for you.
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
Okay.
Goodnight, Grant.
[DOORS RUMBLING]
[KNOCKING ON DOOR]
[JASON] Apology-gram.
[URSULA BARKING]
Okay, I'm only opening the door
because Ursula got
excited when he heard you,
because he doesn't know
that you're a lying piece of
whatever.
Nice work today.
Yeah, you too.
I got you something. It's not a muffin.
Um, it's got hints
of oak, a little spice.
It's liquid, and it's from Kentucky.
Sweet.
[JASON SIGHS]
Look, Wayne, um
You don't want me working there.
No, I don't.
Look, I like being around you.
I love being around you,
and I don't want to screw that up
by being around you 24/7.
Okay, I don't know if you know this,
but I piss people off.
I I [SIGHS] I'd I'd rather
come home to you and complain about that
than come home to you and
have you complain about me.
You know, all of that
you could've just said it.
I know, but I didn't.
Yeah, and, well, uh
that ship has sailed.
You took the job.
I need the money.
You don't have to
explain anything to me.
Just tell me how long
you think you'll be gone for.
It depends.
Wayne, I'm really sorry.
It's not all bad news.
There is some good news.
You
get temporary custody.
I That's
What about Ronnie?
Allergic, so
oh.
I'm gonna miss him.
[SMOOCHES]
I'm gonna miss you.
I'll, um
I'll see you around, Jay.
It's not weird?
[CHUCKLING]
Shopping for engagement
rings with your ex-wife?
It's weird.
[CHUCKLES]
But good.
You deserve a happily-ever-after.
Jeffrey is a lucky guy.
Oh! I gotta go pick up Jenny.
I'll let her know you're on your way.
I'll see her tomorrow. Bye.
No, no. He hasn't
asked me yet, but he will.
Truth is, I think Jeffrey loves you
as much as he loves me.
Hold on, kiddo. My keys are somewhere.
[SHRIEKS]
Hey.
Here you go.
Thank you.
- How you doing?
- Hi.
- Good. How are you?
- I'm good.
What's up, buddy?
Wait, muffins? Really?
No breakfast burritos, or tater tots,
or breakfast sandwiches,
or breakfast?
Muffins are breakfast.
Muffins are lumps that
fester in your stomach.
Even Ursula agrees.
Look, he's disappointed in you.
No, he loves me.
Yeah, well, there's
no accounting for taste.
I think he wants you to pick him up.
You should You should pick him up.
No, I don't need to pick him up.
- No?
- No.
I'm not gonna tell you
my news, then. It's okay.
Okay, I'll pick him up.
Look, I picked him up. What's the news?
I got a job offer.
- Oh, yeah?
- Mm-hmm.
From who?
Can't say.
Okay. Our old bosses?
Can't say.
'Kay. What do they want you to do?
Well, I'm not saying it's them,
and I certainly am not
telling you what they want me to do,
but I can tell you
that it's out of town,
at least for a few weeks.
Permanent, if it works out.
This is where you say something.
[STAMMERS] Look. Uh, you know,
based on the
plethora of information
that you just gave me,
it sounds fantastic,
aside from the maybe
"permanently out of town" part.
There is, uh there is another option.
MPU could hire me.
Okay.
That's, uh, something.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
I mean, think about it
I need the money, you need my skillset,
and I would get to stay in town, so
what do you think?
I think that you're
right about the muffins.
[LAUGHS]
No, I will ask Mike. He's
temporarily in charge.
We'll see what he says.
Amazing.
- Yeah?
- That's great.
[KEMI] Any regrets,
turning down the job?
Not just no, but hell no.
- [CHUCKLES]
- I would be drowning
in stress, paperwork
now I get to just sip
my coffee in peace.
- Mm.
- Speaking of
you want some? I just made a fresh pot.
No, thank you. I am
deeply over-caffeinated.
I just had a coffee with
Amy from Admin, so
I thought you hated Amy from Admin?
I do, but she doesn't
know how to keep a secret,
and I want intel
on who Bill Houston is
considering for our new boss.
As long as it's not me, I do not care.
[KEMI SIGHS]
I'm worried.
What if he fills the office
with somebody who fights with us
instead of fights for us?
Then we kill him.
Oh, okay!
Yeah.
Sergeant Sherman?
This gentleman has a
missing person to report.
[JEFFREY] April and I have
been dating for six months.
I honestly never knew I
could fall in love like that,
but her and Jenny are everything to me.
And it's unusual that you
don't hear from her for a day?
Thank you.
Uh, well, It's it's not just that.
My father took a-a bad fall yesterday.
He went to the hospital.
He's in a coma.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
I went to the basement
to get his, um, you
know, his insurance cards,
and I found these photos.
See, I never told my father about April.
He's had issues with women
ever since my mother left,
but that was years ago.
I think he's been
following me, following us.
What's in the box, Jeffrey?
Uh
when I found the photos, I called April.
When I couldn't get a hold of her,
I was frantic.
I started digging around
my father's things,
and I found this box.
Look, I'm scared he, um
I mean, hunting knife, chloroform
that's the kinds of things that you
Where exactly did you find this box?
In his storage area.
I mean, we only moved in two months ago,
so maybe somebody left it behind.
I really don't want to believe
these are my father's things,
but I'm terrified for April, okay?
So, please please,
you have to find her.
So April works at a
high-end furniture showroom.
She didn't show up to work today,
and her phone has been
offline since 2:15 yesterday,
so that's not good.
You find anything on Jeffrey's dad?
Yes, and no.
Walter Evans works
as a building inspector
for the city,
but no records, no debts,
and he likes classical
music and makes bonsais.
[MIKE] That's nice.
Not even a parking ticket on that one.
He is Mr. Clean, but
previous tenant
Joseph Kalinski,
we're looking at a
violent felony record.
You think the creep-bag belongs to him?
Well, he's a definite maybe.
Jason's running him down now.
- [RATTLING]
- What's up with this thing?
There's something inside,
but I can't get it open.
Don't break it.
It's a hidden-compartment box.
- Um
- [RATTLING SOFTLY]
[CLICK] Okay.
Uh
[CLICKING]
[CLACK]
[CLATTERING]
Whoa.
You thinking what I'm thinking?
- "The Ring Bearer."
- Yup.
That's 10 rings 10 murdered women.
And April might be the next victim.
All right, I'm calling Homicide.
Put out the alert now.
[ALERT BEGINS BLARING]
[BLARING ALERTS, OVERLAPPING]
[BANGING]
[APRIL PANTING ANXIOUSLY]
[THUMPING]
Hello?
Somebody?
[AIR BLOWING]
[KEMI] Okay, so, our missing person
is April Cook.
Her daughter, Jenny, is thankfully okay.
She was with the ex-husband.
He saw the alert, and he's on his way,
but we need anything that you have
that'll help us find April.
Well, Rachel and I worked on
the Ring Bearer's last three victims.
Um, she took it really hard
not being able to find this guy.
You will see why.
10 years, 10 killings
each of our victims was
married, but trying to leave.
Some had filed for divorce,
some had restraining orders.
Their bodies look so pristine.
The Ring Bearer takes his victims
and then leaves them to freeze to death.
Hypothermia is a terrible way to go.
When the core temperature
reaches 91 degrees,
there's confusion, kidney failure,
liver failure.
At 82 degrees, you lose consciousness,
and at 70 degrees, you die.
And the killer dumped the bodies
where their husbands could find them?
Yeah.
- Totally intact
- [HITS KEY]
Except missing
the ring finger
and the wedding band,
and there was always a note
"Till death do us part."
But here's what I don't get.
April divorced two years ago.
Why would he take her now?
I don't know aberration?
Escalation maybe a copycat?
Whichever it is, freezing
to death takes a day,
day and a half, tops.
We don't have a lot of time.
[JASON] Yeah, great.
Actually, not great, but thank you.
All right, the guy who used
to own Walter's house is out,
he's been detoxing the last three weeks
up in some place in Harrisburg.
Well, we need all hands
on deck, so, you know,
maybe if Wayne was on the team
I already told you,
that's a terrible idea.
What is it? Trouble in paradise?
Paradise is fantastic. Why mess with it?
Or maybe, just hear me out,
you don't want her to see
what you're like every day.
That's very astute, okay?
Home is home. Work is
work. Church and state.
[DEEP BREATH]
Well, he doesn't look
like murder material,
but that box was pretty convincing.
Okay, well, he's out of his
coma. Let's wake him up.
Wake him up? What
are you he's sedated.
They said he woke up in
the MRI, and he panicked.
So he's claustrophobic. He's not dead.
Let's rattle his cage.
You got a, um
give me your handcuffs.
- [RATTLING]
- [MIKE SIGHS]
Thanks.
Same old Jason Grant
trying to make his
partner break the rules.
Benedict Arnold.
Good to see you.
I'd love to have a chat, but,
uh, we got a missing woman,
- and this is our prime suspect, so
- Did you happen
to read him his rights
before you cuffed him?
[JASON BLOWS A RASPBERRY]
Did I read him his rl I I
can't remember, honestly,
but if I say yes,
you think he's gonna argue with me?
Some things never change.
Yeah.
Mike Sherman, Gabrielle Bennett.
Never saw a rule she didn't like.
Gotta know 'em to bend 'em.
And that's "Lieutenant Bennett".
Mm.
By the way Ring
Bearer task force is mine.
Walter Evans is mine.
So why don't you two go grab a donut?
[CHUCKLES SOFTLY]
That's funny, because we're cops.
- Oh, got it.
- Actually,
Missing Persons outweighs
a cold-case murder, so why don't you
Hey, hey, may I make a suggestion?
- I'd rather you not.
- No.
Look, we all want to nail
this guy and find April,
so here's a thought.
Maybe we work together?
Yeah, we tried that. It
didn't work out so well.
[SIGHS]
I was his rookie.
[SNICKERING] They They
actually let you train someone?
That's funny.
Just how badly did it end?
Well, I left the force,
and she, uh, she's now a lieutenant,
so you do the math.
Huh!
It must be hard to move
on from a bad relationship.
[SIGHS] I get it.
You see we're divorced,
and you think there's
some dark story between us.
Is there?
We were high-school sweethearts.
We got married too young,
had Jenny too young.
Don't worry, Tommy. She's fine.
She's fine
as long as you find her mother.
Just to get it out of the way,
can you tell me where
you were yesterday?
I was with April ring shopping.
She thinks that Jeffrey's
gonna pop the question.
I know, it seems weird, but
I want her to be happy.
I left to pick up Jenny, and
then soccer and a playdate.
And where were you ring shopping?
A jewelry store in Queen Village.
I left around 2:00.
Jenny said April called her right after,
and Jenny said the call dropped,
but I didn't think
anything of it. I just
Okay, so Queen Village Jeweler is here,
and that is where Tommy left her.
He did say that she
brought him a milkshake,
and it's gotta be from McFarland's,
right here. Oh, great, so if you were
- getting a milkshake from McFarland's
- Uh-huh.
And then you were going
to Queen Village Jeweler
Yes, I would park right here.
- Nice.
- Boom.
Okay, so let's see if
we can track her car
and, if we get lucky, find Walter's.
[MIKE] So what's the story?
What did he do? Kill your cat?
Your brother?
How long have you two been partners?
About two years, give or take?
Mm-hmm.
That's about when it went south for me.
I mean, I don't know. Look at you now
you're pretty young to run
a Major Crimes task force.
In spite of him, not because of him.
Okay.
He ever tell you why he left the PPD?
Yeah, he took a
better-paying job for his family.
[SCOFFS]
What? He did. Now he's back.
Did he mention
that, if he hadn't taken that job,
I would have forced him out?
Yeah, I.A. would've forced me out
because my rookie ratted me out.
Your partner told the truth.
You know, sometimes,
there's parts of the truth
that don't need to be told.
You used a chainsaw to break into
a building with a front
door, without a warrant.
Remember those?
Little pieces of paper that judges sign?
Yeah. I found a murder weapon.
Was it admissible in court?
Who cares? I took
a killer off the street.
And if he hadn't choked on
a ham and cheese in lockup,
he'd be right back out there.
Yeah.
But he choked on a ham
and cheese in lockup.
Okay?
Everything I did,
you knew about, you were a part of it.
Did I have a choice? I was
caught in a vortex of Jason.
[MIKE CHUCKLING DROLLY]
Shut up.
Okay? You're missing
it. She's missing it.
Oh, yeah, I can tell.
Okay, listen.
This doctor said that
whatever drugs this guy is on,
uh, they will not cloud his memory,
so his statement will not be tainted.
Let's wake up Sleeping Beauty now.
Okay, good. This is
how we're gonna play it.
I want you two to take the lead.
Wow, didn't see that coming.
She knows that if we press
this guy about a missing person,
we got a better shot than she will have
trying to pin 10 murders on him.
Amongst your many failings,
stupidity isn't one of them.
Do not bring up the rings.
I want to save that.
- 'Kay.
- Great.
Thanks for everything.
Yeah, you're welcome.
- Mr. Evans, wake up.
- [THWACK]
Come on, wake up. Get up.
You don't look like a doctor.
Mm-mm.
Is he the doctor?
No, I'm not, Walter.
We're cops.
We're here to talk to you
about your son's girlfriend, April.
[MIKE] She's missing, and we were hoping
that you could help us find her.
[PHONE BUZZES]
All right, these are, uh
these are photographs that you took.
Yeah, Kemi, what's up?
That's April.
April.
Jog your memory a little bit?
Huh?
[SIGHS]
I was worried about Jeffrey.
He's been cutting me
out of his life recently,
and so I followed him
how I found out that
he had this other life.
Do you know where April is now?
I'm sorry, I don't.
The truth is, April and I never met.
Then why was your van
seen leaving the garage
where April parked,
right after she disappeared?
That was Kemi. He was there.
That doesn't look good for you, Walter.
[SIGHS]
Okay.
We found the box
the box with the rings in it.
You know what I mean?
Walter Evans.
I am Lieutenant Gabrielle Bennett.
I am informing you
that you are a suspect in
the Ring Bearer Murders.
If you'd like a lawyer,
you may have one.
Anything you say can, and
will, be used against you.
Do you understand?
My son brought you that box, didn't he?
The box that belongs to the Ring Bearer?
Are you admitting
you're the Ring Bearer?
I'm sure that's what he told you,
but no, that is not my box.
I found it, yes,
but it belongs to him.
And yes, I believe that
my son is a serial killer.
So if you want to find April,
you're gonna have to talk to him.
[QUIET ELECTRICAL HUMMING]
[APRIL WHIMPERING]
- [GRUNTING]
- [TEARING]
[KEMI] We're running out of time,
and Jeffrey isn't picking up.
Well, the question is, then,
which one is telling the truth?
Okay, so we have Walter's panel van
in proximity to April's disappearance.
Panel van, as in best-way-
to-transport-a-body van.
I mean, he did have that
van detailed late yesterday,
which suggests that
he is hiding evidence.
Yes, but look at this.
- [CLICK]
- I took
the knife from the box
that Jeffrey brought in,
and I compared it to the markings
on the metacarpi,
where the Ring Bearer cut the fingers.
The killer used a serrated blade.
The knife's not a match.
Are you saying that he
brought us fake evidence?
I mean, he wouldn't
be the first serial killer
to play chicken with the police.
Zodiac, Son of Sam
But the whole April thing,
I mean, they were
dating we saw the photos.
Well, what do we know about this guy?
Uh, okay, um Jeffrey Evans, he's 33,
he's a court reporter,
never married,
and socials are non-existent.
That's kind of odd, for a guy his age.
I mean, the mother did run
out when he was a teenager,
and he's lived with his father
ever since I don't know.
Well, speaking from experience,
that doesn't indicate guilt,
but why is he pointing
us towards his father?
I don't know,
but we need to get
Jeffrey back here now.
- Yeah.
- Interesting. You're calling for my help.
I don't know. The
father says it's the son
the son says it's the father.
Someone's playing us,
and we're running out of time.
Does that mean Mike said yes?
Uh, no um, he said
that your felony record
is kind of an issue, so
I think it's off the table.
Seriously?
I know, I know, I know, it sucks.
But anyway, listen to me,
this guy, Jeffrey Evans,
he's not answering his phone.
If you can hack his data location,
best-case scenario, we find April,
worst-case scenario, we find him, right?
Look, Jay, I hear you,
but you cannot have it both ways
wanting my help and not wanting my help.
- Wayne, come on.
- Look, I got to go,
but I am sure that there's
somebody being paid
to find this woman who can help you.
[ENDS CALL]
[GABRIELLE] So here's
what I'm struggling with, Walter.
It wasn't until you
knew we had the rings
that you gave him up.
Sounds almost like an excuse.
Do you have children?
Either of you?
Yes. I have a stepdaughter.
I bet you'd do anything for her.
I always thought I would
do anything for Jeffrey,
but two weeks ago, I found that box.
I didn't want to believe it,
but I followed him,
trying to understand who he was,
what he was.
That's how I found out about April.
Walter, we have your
van in the parking lot
where she was abducted.
I followed her.
I was t-trying to work
up the nerve to talk to her,
- to warn her.
- "Hey, woman I don't know
the man you're dating
is a serial killer"?
- Yeah.
- I don't see it, Walter.
You're right.
I couldn't find the words, so I left.
And then you go back to
the van and get it detailed?
Why, exactly?
I got back to the parking
lot, and my van was gone.
You know who else has keys?
Jeffrey.
I got back home,
and he confronted me about April,
I confronted him about the box.
You didn't fall.
- He pushed you down the stairs.
- Why didn't you tell us?
[CHOKES UP] He's my son.
He's all I have.
[SIGHS SHAKILY]
Thank you.
So Jeffrey got my calls, and
they're bringing him up now.
- Does he know we know?
- I told him
that we had a lead on April
and that we needed his help.
Look, if this is our guy,
the last thing that we
want is for him to lawyer up,
because then we will never find April.
I told Jason
I wasn't gonna help
with this Ring Bearer case
because Mike doesn't want to hire me,
but I can't help myself, so.
"Mike" doesn't want to hire you?
He's the boss, he made the call.
He's not the boss.
He turned the job down.
That is the exact opposite
of what Jason said.
I'm sure there's a reason or an excuse.
Okay! Uh, so you came in.
I am assuming that's
because you found something?
- Yes. So
- Okay.
The Ring Bearer, his victims
they all went through family court.
Yeah, they all filed for a divorce,
restraining order, or custody.
Yeah, we know.
Well, I hacked the court records.
Did you know
that the court reporter
on all of those cases
was Jeffrey Evans?
[KEMI SIGHS]
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
[KEMI] Well
let's go see just who is playing whom.
Hi.
Jeffrey, thank you
so much for coming in.
Did you find April?
No, but we did find a solid lead.
Why don't I, uh, walk you through it?
Why are you taking me in there?
It's just a place to talk, yeah?
Of course.
Jeffrey!
Down. Down.
- This wasn't
- Down. Down! On the ground!
On the ground, now! All of you!
Everybody!
Stay back, or she dies!
- Listen to him!
- Stay back, or she dies!
Jeffrey, slow down! We
can talk about this. Please!
Are we ready?
[SWAT LEAD] Mr. Evans!
This is Lieutenant Jamal Ravani!
We want to end this quietly and safely.
All I want to know right now
is Detective Adebayo okay?
You realize the problem, right?
You are in a building
filled with police officers.
Whatever happens in this room,
it doesn't end well for you.
All right, hey.
- Jeffrey showed up and took Kemi hostage.
- What?
He's got her barricaded in Helen's lab.
Oh, well, I guess we know
which one's telling the truth.
I hate to say it,
but chances are, your
missing person's dead.
- He's playing with you.
- Come on, let's go, let's go.
[PHONE BUZZING]
We're on our way right now.
[WAYNE] Don't leave the hospital!
Why not? Hold on. Why not?
Jeffrey Evans might be the Ring Bearer,
- but he didn't take April.
- How do you know?
Because, at 2:15 yesterday,
when April was grabbed,
he was on the 13th floor
of the Family Court Building,
according to security
logs, eight eyewitnesses.
- If he didn't take her
- Hold on, hold on.
Listen to me. They got Kemi.
Let us know if anything goes down.
- We'll be there in five minutes.
- Yeah.
- You understand?
- SWAT is on it here, okay?
You guys work your end.
Jay
C says that April has two hours, tops.
All right, all right,
all right, goodbye.
I'm gonna kill somebody.
Let's go bounce this
guy's head off the bed post.
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
Jamal?
I hear this is your guy in there.
That's the theory. What's his ask?
That we find April Cook, or
he kills Detective Adebayo.
What do we know about Adebayo?
[WAYNE] What we know
is that she is the calmest
cop in the building.
If there is anybody that can break
this broken chromosome
of a creep, it is her.
Who the hell are you?
I'm the person that can
hijack the computer in there
so that we can hear and see inside,
and prevent Rambo over here
from risking Kemi's life.
Do it.
Already done.
[GABRIELLE] The video
feed doesn't give much,
but the sound is good.
Yeah, you're welcome,
and yes, I am recording.
Over to you.
[KEMI, ON FEED] You still have choices.
Let me help you.
- [THUMPING]
- [RAGING] God!
[EXHALES SHAKILY]
Jeffrey, what is it that you want?
What do I want?
What I want
is for the MPU to find April.
That's what I want.
Okay.
[LAUGHS]
I'm sorry, I don't believe you.
You don't believe me?
You gave us a box,
and then you made us do the work
that is time wasted.
You wanted us to believe
that your father was the Ring Bearer,
but you didn't even
mention the rings, Jeffrey!
That is more time wasted.
I didn't want it to look
like I was setting him up.
But you are, right?
Nothing I told you wasn't true.
- My father took April.
- Okay, so you're saying
that it's your father, and
he's saying that it's you.
Figuring out the truth
takes time, Jeffrey!
Time!
And now you have made it even worse,
because right now,
all that anyone in that
hallway cares about
is me!
Yeah
well, if they care about
you, I guess they'll find her,
then, won't they?
You have to help them do that.
The Ring Bearer,
if it is you or your father,
he freezes people
and that does not
give them much time.
So what is the truth, Jeffrey?
Is it you
or is it him?
The Ring Bearer is both of us.
We find them,
we kill them together
every single one.
But not this, not April.
That's him.
This is all him.
I love April
[ROARS] and I have no
idea where he's keeping her!
The only thing I know
is that she is running out of time
and so are you.
I have a complicated relationship
with my own father.
He hurt me
and I really wanted to hurt him back.
So I can imagine how you feel,
and I think that you should use that.
If you want to help April
you should hurt your father.
Give us ammunition that
we can use against him.
What do you mean, ammunition?
Walk me through it.
What you did.
To Ellen Forrest.
To Kelsey Whitlock.
To all of them.
[SIGHS HEAVILY]
When my mother left,
my father was furious.
"Women who leave need to be punished,"
that's what he said.
You know, when I started
working at family court,
I realized he was right,
because all it was,
was woman after woman after woman
walking away from their commitments
to their husbands, their kids,
with zero consequences.
And then there was one case
this woman so unremorseful
to the misery of her husband,
it made me
My father said that we
needed to do something,
so we followed her
took her.
The first victim
Cheryl Forbes?
Mm-hmm.
We took her to an old
building that he red-tagged.
It was an old ice-cream factory.
I still remember
the strawberry and
chocolate swirls on the walls.
We locked her in the freezer.
I thought we were just
gonna scare her, but then,
by the time we came
back, she was frozen
dead.
My father said it would
be better this way.
And you believed that?
Yeah, he was right.
After the third one,
when they started
calling us the Ring Bearer,
Philadelphia divorce rates dropped 10%.
Where is this factory?
No, she's not there.
It's always a different building,
a red-tagged one
where we can lock
them in and freeze them.
And now April.
She wasn't supposed to be a victim.
When I met her, everything changed.
I mean, she had left
[SIGHS]
She had left her marriage.
She did
but it was for the better, I mean
for her, her ex, her kid
everybody was happier,
and she made me happy.
But then your father found out.
He said he was trying to save me.
Now I think maybe he was
just afraid of me leaving,
like my mom did.
Listen, we have everything we need.
No more games.
Tell Walter, if he wants a deal,
he gives us April.
He is not making a deal.
I don't want to, either, Jason,
but there's a woman
who dies if we don't.
Two women!
[SIGHING] Okay.
I I I have an idea.
I'm pretty sure you're
not gonna like it, though.
I've been on this for three years.
I've talked to the husbands, the kids.
I've seen the bodies.
I may not like whatever
it is you have to do,
but don't tell me just do it.
Great, more questions?
What, are you guys tag-teaming now?
No, just a little field trip.
Where are you taking me?
To the club. It's gonna be fun.
Yeah, we're gonna dance the night away.
[DOORS BANG]
What What, you're torturing me?
Is that the idea?
I have a high pain threshold.
My mother made sure of that!
We don't really believe in torture.
[JASON] No, but we do believe in karma.
[WALTER] No, no.
All right, Walter, we're gonna
ask you this one more time.
Where's April?
[BREATHES ANXIOUSLY]
Get him.
No, no, no, no!
[SHRIEKS] No!
Oh, no!
No, no, no.
No, no, no, no! No!
No! No! No! No!
[SCREAMS]
No, no, no! No, no, no!
- [BANG]
- Let me out!
[SHRIEKING] Let me out!
Let me out! Lemme out!
[SCREAMING]
Well, this is just hard to listen to.
[MUFFLED SCREAMING] No, no, no!
Let's get him out.
- [TUTTING HIM REPROACHFULLY]
- [WALTER SCREAMING]
You have to be patient. Just wait.
Let me out!
[HYPERVENTILATING]
[SHRIEKING] I'll
talk! I'll talk! I'll talk!
I'll talk!
- I'll talk!
- See?
I'll talk!
- What'd you say?
- I'll
I'll take you to her.
All right, take us where?
No, I'm I'm gonna have to show you,
b because it's a maze.
It's a maze a and
by the time you get there,
if you try to find her by yourselves,
she's going to be dead.
It's your choice.
"Till death do us part"
should mean something.
[JASON] Uh-huh.
Are you married or divorced, Detective?
[LAUGHS MOCKINGLY]
Yeah, someone definitely left you.
Listen to me. Listen to me.
Shut up.
No more talking out of you.
The only thing I wanna
hear from you is "left,"
"right," or "here." Okay?
Where do we go?
- Left.
- Let's go.
We're close,
but before I show you,
I want to talk to my son.
No, no. No more games, Walter.
I want to talk to my son.
[PHONE BUZZES]
Where is she?
[SNAPS] Where is she? Where's April?
[WALTER] I forgive you, Jeffrey.
Sorry, you forgive me?
It didn't have to end this way.
Okay, we're here.
[SHOUTS] Detective,
keep him on the line!
[GATE CREAKS]
[DOOR CREAKS]
That's not good.
That's old bones.
Okay, that's not April.
That's not someone
you put there yesterday.
No, it's not.
[EXHALES, WROUGHT]
But we've come full circle
because she was the first.
That's Jeffrey's mother!
She did leave, Jeff!
I didn't lie about that!
[RAGES] But I found her!
Hey, hey, where's April?
It's all for the best, son!
She would've hurt you eventually.
[SCREAMING] No!
Jeffrey
I'm gonna kill you!
I'm gonna kill you!
Jeffrey, it doesn't mean
that she is dead! Please.
Just stay with me. Stay with me.
He wants her dead!
[QUIETER] If he wants her dead,
she is dead.
[GABRIELLE] We gambled. We lost.
Bring him in.
There's nothing more you guys can do.
[SIGHING]
[WAYNE] Look, April is there.
She is She's right there.
- What are you talking about?
- Look, on that call,
Walter was talking about
things "coming full circle."
Yeah, full circle. He
buried his wife there.
Yeah, but not only that,
he killed her there, okay?
There are tunnels.
Look, those tunnels go
underneath multiple properties.
If they keep going,
they will hit an old
meat-packing plant
a meat-packing plant that
Walter Evans shut down
a month before his wife disappeared.
How does that mean April's there?
I checked the grid.
The plant was red-tagged 15 years ago,
but yet it's still drawing power.
Meat-packing plant would have a freezer.
It does.
Right there.
April, Philly PD!
We need breachers in here.
We're running out of time!
[GRUNTING]
How's that supposed to help us?
You ever see No Country for Old Men?
No, I must've missed that one.
Well, this was my favorite part.
[CANISTER THUMPS]
[JASON GRUNTS]
[THUMP]
Like that.
[HANDLE CLATTERS ON FLOOR]
I've got a pulse.
Get EMTs in here!
Where are those blankets?
[VOICES OVERLAPPING]
[PHONE RINGS]
[RINGING]
[RINGING]
Hello?
Detective Adebayo,
this is Lieutenant Bennett.
- Are we on speaker?
- We are.
Jeffrey Evans, we found April.
She is on her way to the hospital.
She is conscious, and
she will survive this.
- [EXHALES]
- If you need verification,
you can stream any local news station.
[LAUGHS DELIRIOUSLY]
That's wonderful news.
We held up our end of the bargain.
It's time to let Detective Adebayo go.
Here's what I know, Jeffrey.
These killings they
meant something to you.
You were punishing women
who did something
you found unforgivable.
The Ring Bearer has a moral compass.
I don't agree with it
but I understand it.
Detective Adebayo,
she doesn't fit the profile, Jeffrey.
If you kill her,
you're no longer making a point
you're just a murderer.
[PHONE LINE CLICKS]
[RUMBLING]
[LOCK TURNS]
[KEMI] Weapons down! We're clear!
Stand down!
Everyone, stand down!
Jeffrey Evans
you're under arrest.
Tell April I loved her.
- [HANDCUFFS CLICK]
- I really did.
I know.
[QUIETLY] Thank you.
Kemi!
Oh!
I was so worried.
Are you okay?
Child, I've had better days.
[BOTH LAUGHING]
Oh, my god.
- Hey!
- Hi!
I guess you and I have
something in common.
[BOTH LAUGHING]
Let's start our own support group.
Yeah.
I really need a drink.
[C LAUGHS]
- Whatever you need. Yeah.
- Yeah.
[KEMI] I don't want a fuss, please.
I don't want a fuss, either.
I just want to have a drink.
That's it.
Well, I think we all earned it.
Room for one more?
Absolutely, Lieutenant.
Thanks.
All right, this goes out to
Detective Kemi Adebayo,
who saved that woman.
Above and beyond, so thank you.
I also wanted to thank
our hacker friend
Wayne?
Does anyone know where she is?
Yeah, where's, uh, where's Wayne?
[EXHALES]
I'm I'm sorry, what what
does that mean?
Look, if you're not gonna
be completely truthful,
you maybe should keep
us all in the in the loop.
[JASON STAMMERING]
She was rattled about
Mike not wanting to hire her,
and I I I might have
mentioned, uh, that he's not the boss.
Seriously?
You told her I said no?
I'm not sure what I said, exactly.
[MIKE] That's convenient.
Go do damage control.
Go.
[JASON SIGHS]
- Thank you for holding it down.
- Mm-hmm.
- Okay.
- It was a lot.
Just Just go fix your mess.
Sorry.
I'll walk with you a minute.
Okay. After you.
[QUIETLY] Okay, so what's
the story with those two?
She was his rookie.
They let Jason train somebody?
I said the same thing.
So let me guess
you're gonna tell me I took it too far?
"Sometimes too far is just far enough."
Oh, you're quoting me? That's funny.
You thought I wasn't listening?
Like I had a choice.
Look, I'm just glad that
you learned something.
Listen, Jason, for what it's worth,
I did tell I.A. they
were making a mistake.
I went to bat for you.
I just didn't lie for you.
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
Okay.
Goodnight, Grant.
[DOORS RUMBLING]
[KNOCKING ON DOOR]
[JASON] Apology-gram.
[URSULA BARKING]
Okay, I'm only opening the door
because Ursula got
excited when he heard you,
because he doesn't know
that you're a lying piece of
whatever.
Nice work today.
Yeah, you too.
I got you something. It's not a muffin.
Um, it's got hints
of oak, a little spice.
It's liquid, and it's from Kentucky.
Sweet.
[JASON SIGHS]
Look, Wayne, um
You don't want me working there.
No, I don't.
Look, I like being around you.
I love being around you,
and I don't want to screw that up
by being around you 24/7.
Okay, I don't know if you know this,
but I piss people off.
I I [SIGHS] I'd I'd rather
come home to you and complain about that
than come home to you and
have you complain about me.
You know, all of that
you could've just said it.
I know, but I didn't.
Yeah, and, well, uh
that ship has sailed.
You took the job.
I need the money.
You don't have to
explain anything to me.
Just tell me how long
you think you'll be gone for.
It depends.
Wayne, I'm really sorry.
It's not all bad news.
There is some good news.
You
get temporary custody.
I That's
What about Ronnie?
Allergic, so
oh.
I'm gonna miss him.
[SMOOCHES]
I'm gonna miss you.
I'll, um
I'll see you around, Jay.
