Stolen Life

Previously, on Allegiance
- How's Will doing?
- I don't know.
I haven't been able to reach him.
He's not safe in there.
You say you've got connections.
Maybe it's time to use 'em.
[KLASSEN] If you're gonna kiss my ass,
at least you can have the
decency to drink with me.
There he is.
So, Brambilla
You deliberately ignored that
call and got someone shot.
We can't drop everything
and come running
every time Sohal calls.
I'm gonna be watching you
memo books, arrest sheets
you won't so much as
sneeze without me knowing.
In fact, I'm gonna make it my business
to see that both your
asses are chained to a desk
after what you pulled today.
- Is that a threat?
- [VINCE] No! It's a promise!
[ASHA, SOBBING] He
was getting out for me,
and you sent him back in,
just so you could get what you needed.
But what about me?
What do I tell my baby?
Asha, I'm so sorry.
[DR. BUCHANAN] As physicians,
we have an obligation
to inform our patients
of the risks and benefits
of all medical procedures.
We must respect whatever
our patient chooses.
Coercion, force,
and uninformed consent
are morally and ethically odious.
[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]
[DOOR RUMBLING]
Great talk.
I love your dedication to your patients.
Thank you. It's vitally
important that we, as caregivers,
adhere to our duty to do no harm.
Does that include billing practices?
Mark Davies, CBBT news.
I've got a source on record
saying that you've been
billing BC Health Care
for services you never provided.
- Any comment, Doctor?
- That's ridiculous.
False hours worked,
fake services provided
to a tune of 1.6 million.
Mr. Davies, I strongly suggest
that you get your facts straight
before making such reckless
and defamatory accusations.
[FLOOR BELL DINGS]
If you'll excuse me,
I have a high-risk C-section to perform.
[SIGHS]
[VEHICLE APPROACHING]
[BRAKES SQUEALING]
[DOOR OPENS]
Whoa. What's going on?
Stop! Stop!
[MUFFLED GRUNTING]
[TENSE THEME PLAYS]
[♪]
[THUD]
[ENGINE ROARS]
[TIRES SQUEAL]
[♪]
[♪]
[ZAK] Thank you.
[ZAK] Hey.
- Thanks.
- Yeah.
Heard Jones and Trinh are on desk duty.
- Oh, yeah?
- They should've been fired.
Abduction in progress.
Be on the lookout for a black SUV
with a catering logo on the side.
Last seen exiting
the Lower Mainland University parkade.
Two suspects.
Armed and dangerous.
Copy, en route to LMU.
[SIREN BEGINS WAILING]
[VINCE] And you think you saw
one of the men carrying
a cordless vacuum cleaner?
- Yes.
- Are you sure it wasn't a gun?
The other guy had a gun.
This guy had a vacuum cleaner.
I've gotta pick up my son
from baseball practice.
- Yeah, well, he's gonna have to wait.
- He's 10!
Obviously, you don't have kids, asshole.
Keep it up! Yeah, and I'll arrest you
for obstruction of justice.
You got it
- asshole?
- Officer Gabinski! A minute?
[INDISTINCT INVESTIGATION
DIN IN BACKGROUND]
- Yeah?
- What're you doing?
I'm doing my job.
Do it less forcefully.
You look like crap, Gabby.
You drink again and you're
done. You know that, right?
Hey
[DOORS THUDDING]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS]
[VINCE] You get stuck in the chaos?
- It's complete gridlock.
- Yeah.
We lost our suspect
vehicle at 200th and 56th.
I heard something about
traffic lights not working?
They went berserk.
Changing colours at whim.
- Fender benders everywhere.
- And our suspect vehicle?
Well, they made it through by
the skin of their teeth. Gone. Poof.
Well, let's hope they
left something here for us.
- What do we got?
- The witness says
she saw two men wearing bandanas
shoot a guy
and toss his body into a black SUV.
It said "Mother's Feast
Catering" on the side.
- She didn't hear a gunshot.
- Silencer?
Maybe. But there's no
sign of blood anywhere.
She get a description of the victim?
- Too far away.
- CCTV camera over there.
Any idea which of the
vehicles belongs to our victim?
Not yet. We're still questioning people.
It's gonna take awhile.
I've got Forensics taking photos
of all the cars and plates.
I'll get 'em to Gillian
as soon as they're done.
All right, thanks, Vince.
Oh
our witness was pretty sure
she saw one of the abductors with a, um,
cordless vacuum cleaner.
I don't know, maybe they're neat freaks.
It's a busy university
parkade, middle of the day
these guys are brazen.
Sabrina.
This is Taser confetti.
[♪]
There's only four of them.
Taser cartridges usually
deploy between 20 to 30.
- Yeah.
- So this witness wasn't seeing things
these guys had a
cordless vacuum cleaner.
Well, with any luck, the anti-felon I.D.
tags on these little guys
will lead us straight to our abductors.
[GILLIAN] All units
catering vehicle just spotted entering
Waterfront Industrial Park.
Command, 6103. On our way!
Nah, no, no, no. You're riding shotgun.
Let's go.
[GABBY POUNDS HATCH]
[GILLIAN] 6103, we're
also getting reports
of explosions at
Waterfront Industrial Park.
[SIREN WAILS]
Command, 6103.
Located the suspect vehicle in flames.
- Anyone in the vehicle?
- Negative.
Looks like they deliberately
set the SUV on fire.
How the hell'd they just disappear?
Getaway vehicle?
[♪]
Anything back on the Taser AFIDS?
Uh, ahem, I traced them
back to a place in Seattle.
Reported stolen three years ago.
Most likely sold on the Dark Web.
What about the parkade's CCTV footage?
Nothing but snow but
I do have some good news.
I, uh, I narrowed down
the names for the vehicles
parked on the 6th-level parkade,
and the only one who
hasn't picked up their car
is, uh, CBBT journalist Mark Davies.
[SABRINA] Was he working
on a story at LMU?
[PRODUCER] Never mentioned
anything to me about it.
What about enemies or recent threats?
It's an everyday occurrence.
Mark's an investigative journalist
pisses a lot of people off.
We're gonna need to see his work laptop.
I can't do that.
He's got highly-sensitive
material on that laptop.
Confidential sources.
Privileged conversations.
You're gonna need a warrant.
Well, we've got a well-known journalist
abducted by two men in bandanas.
And they had a
meticulously laid-out plan.
Knew exactly where he'd be this morning,
and precisely where he parked his car.
They're tech-savvy, sophisticated
scrambled CCTV cameras,
signal-jammers, stolen Taser
Yeah, took great steps to
leave no evidence at the scene.
This level of strategy
and organization
it doesn't seem like the
work of one or two people.
What if we have a mastermind
pulling the strings?
Yeah, but so far, no
ransom note or demands.
So what do they want?
What's their end game?
Mark Davies investigates stories
around political and
financial corruption.
Then maybe he exposed
someone or something.
A politician, C.E.O.,
a real estate mogul
had them fired, or arrested.
[HITTING KEYS]
There're over a hundred
search results for Mark Davies.
He's exposed a lot of
high-profile people.
Some powerful people.
But why take him?
If he ruined them, why not just
kill him there, in the parkade?
What if it's not a story
he's already written?
What if he's working on something new,
and someone wants to stop
him from exposing them?
Your in-house computer genius
was able to crack Davies' password
three minutes after getting the warrant.
Boom! That's a new record.
Thanks, Gill.
Try his calendar,
see if he had any meetings at LMU.
[SABRINA] No. Nothing.
No morning meetings.
Dentist appointment in the afternoon.
'Kay. What about this
"new story ideas" folder?
- [WHACKS KEY]
- "Rise of financial extortion
on South-Asian businesses in Surrey."
Big enough story to put
him in someone's crosshairs?
Some of these extortionists
have been known
to shoot at, burn down
people's businesses, homes,
so, I'd say yes.
"Longshoremen union
being run by a biker gang
known to import drugs
and guns via cargo ships."
Well, so far, we're two for two.
I'll take the longshoreman.
All right, I'll keep
looking at the laptop,
get Vince to take the other owners.
And, hopefully, our
"in-house computer genius"
finds something on the
industrial yard CCTV.
Just speed it up to
before the van arrived.
Wow. Somebody needs a Happy Meal.
Give us a sec, Gill? Mm?
Yeah. Come on.
What's up? Ahem.
- Go home.
- What?
Yeah. Take your attitude and
your hangover out of here.
Oh, come on, Vince.
I'm this close to reporting you.
Really?
[CHUCKLES BITTERLY]
Okay.
[THEME SWELLS WITH DARKNESS]
[♪]
- Sorry about that. Where were we?
- Yeah.
[♪]
Organized Crime Unit
has been surveilling the
longshoremen for almost a year.
Mark Davies definitely wasn't a target.
If he was working on a story,
the bikers didn't know about it.
Well, Vince talked to a few of
the South-Asian business owners,
and none of 'em say a
word about being extorted.
Maybe out of fear of retaliation?
They all denied knowing Mark Davies.
It's Gillian.
CCTV from the industrial
yard was tampered with.
That's three times now.
These guys are like cyber-ninjas.
What are we missing here?
Well, I checked all the morning events
going on at the university
women's soccer practice,
sustainable innovation seminar,
and an ethics lecture with
renowned gynecologist Dr. Doug Buchanan.
Okay, not exactly
hard-hitting news stories.
Hey, wait. What time did
Dr. Buchanan's lecture end?
11:30.
That's around the same time
Mark Davies was abducted.
[KEYS CLACKING]
[SABRINA] I'm gonna search "Buchanan".
Mark got a tip that Dr. Buchanan
was defrauding BC
Health for $1.6 million.
[GILLIAN] Abandoned vehicle at LMU, P5.
- On our way!
- Silver Mercedes.
License plate Tango
Mike-Romeo, zero-six-eight.
Registered to Doug Buchanan.
- [DOOR SHUTS]
- [SABRINA] There it is.
[♪]
Oh. The hood's open.
[♪]
Fuel line's been cut.
Zak
[♪]
[♪]
A journalist and a doctor.
What's the connection here?
They could be working
on a story together.
Yeah. Maybe someone
wanted to silence them
before they exposed something?
Well, someone's got to know something.
Dr. Buchanan has a private practice.
In my experience, receptionists
see all, hear all, know all.
Have there been any threats
made against Dr. Buchanan?
- Threats? No!
- What about complaints?
There have been
absolutely no complaints.
Not one disgruntled patient?
Detective, I have worked with
Dr. Buchanan for over 10 years,
and I can tell you this
not only is he an exceptional ob-gyn,
he's one of the most caring
doctors you'll ever meet.
But he might be in real danger.
So, if there is anyone
that you can think of
There was this one ex-patient.
She came storming into the office,
with her husband,
both of them yelling and
waving their arms around,
and demanding to speak Dr. Buchanan.
No decorum whatsoever.
[DISDAINFULLY] You know
how these people are.
"These people"?
They're Ind
[WHISPERS] they're Indigenous.
I started to call the police,
but Dr. Buchanan stopped me.
He's a very compassionate man.
What was the patient's name?
Lisa-Marie Lamont.
[DARK, THRILLING THEME PLAYS]
[♪]
[GILLIAN] A Dr. Buchanan is
officially listed as "missing".
[ZAK] Thanks, Gill. We're just
arriving at the Lamont residence.
[QUIET, EERIE THEME RISES]
[♪]
No vehicles.
No sign of anyone.
[ZAK THUMPING ON DOOR]
Police! Open up!
- [CLICK]
- Door's open.
[♪]
[SABRINA] CFPC!
[♪]
[ZAK] Clear!
[♪]
Clear.
[♪]
Doesn't look like anyone's
been here for years.
[GILLIAN] Sabrina, I've got
something on Lisa-Marie Lamont.
Go, Gill.
She was in a terrible car
accident two years ago.
She and her husband
and their two-year-old daughter, Riel,
were coming back from a powwow
when they were hit by a drunk driver
who was a 20-year-old
university student.
Her daughter died on impact.
Lisa-Marie was seriously injured.
She spent months in the hospital,
and, um, it looks like
her marriage fell apart
a year ago. She's archived photos
of her and her husband
from around that same time.
[SABRINA] Thanks, Gill.
I wouldn't come back here, either.
[♪]
[SABRINA] Zak?
[♪]
[CLICK]
[RUMBLING]
[♪]
[ZAK] Holy crap!
[SABRINA] This is surveillance
of Davies and Buchanan.
Someone's been working
on this for months.
[ZAK] Sabrina, look at this.
"Fake stories to reel in journalist."
- Look at the circled one.
- "Fraudulent billing.
Buchanan steals 1.6
million from tax payers."
It's the anonymous tip that
we found on Davies' laptop.
- They set him up.
- It's a big story.
Of course he's gonna follow up.
Right after Dr. Buchanan's talk,
they abducted him.
They must've nabbed him
just before or just after.
Okay, so we have the
how question is, why?
High-end recording equipment,
professional backdrop
they wanted Davies to
broadcast something.
They wanted Buchanan to
say something on-camera.
What if Lisa-Marie wanted
her undisclosed complaint
to become public?
So maybe our kidnappers aren't two men?
They're a husband-and-wife duo.
Gillian, can you pull an address
on Lisa-Marie's ex-husband?
[GILLIAN] Yep. Just give me a sec.
Uh he's in the Yukon,
working at a diamond mine.
- You're sure?
- Yeah,
I got his socials right
here in front of me.
He posted a pic outside the mine
- So who's our second kidnapper?
[♪]
[VAN RUMBLING OVER ASPHALT]
This is gonna work, right?
It's me and you.
We got this.
- [CHASSIS JOSTLING]
- [TAPE SNAPS]
[SNAP]
One more move,
and I will shoot you dead.
[CHASSIS CLATTERS OVER BUMP]
[SKIRMISHING]
[DRIVER] Auntie!
[GROANS]
- [GUN DISCHARGES]
- [GASP]
- [THUD]
- [LISA-MARIE GASPS IN PAIN]
[LISA-MARIE GROANING]
Lisa-Marie!
[♪]
[LISA-MARIE GROANING]
Oh
- [RIP]
- Tell me what to do!
Put pressure on the wound.
[♪]
- Keep going.
- But you
Get us to the cabin!
[♪]
[WHIMPERS AND SOBS]
[PANTING WITH PANIC]
I can't imagine what
she's going through.
Losing a two-year-old.
Your only child.
Looks like her death
ripped their family apart.
[♪]
Yeah, I don't think I could go on.
Sadly, some parents don't.
Sabrina.
It's maybe a sister?
Gillian I'm sending you a photo.
Need to know the woman
next to Lisa-Marie.
[GILLIAN] Copy.
Zak, I got two stencils here.
One for "Mother's Feast Catering,"
and the other
Their getaway vehicle.
Gillian, we think our suspects
may be travelling in a van
- with a "Seedlings Florist" logo on it.
- Copy.
And I was able to do a
reverse match on that photo.
The woman beside Lisa-Marie
is Mêkwan Marchand
she's Lisa-Marie's niece.
There's a lot of comments
about her being a computer whiz.
And get this she is
also another former patient
of Dr. Buchanan's.
[♪]
[GROANING SOFTLY]
Sir, I've got one of
the hostages on the line.
[BOLTON] Patch him through
to Sohal and Kalaini.
- [KEYS CLACK]
- Hey, Sabrina?
I've got Mark Davies on the line.
I'm putting him through now.
[MARK] I was abducted. I just escaped.
- It was two Native women.
- Mark
They had a gun.
There was a struggle.
It went off, one of the women was shot.
I took off, I ran for my life.
Mark, I need you to slow down, okay?
- You said two women?
- Yes.
All right, and w-where
did you escape from?
Uh, a big van like the
kind that carries mail.
They had another guy, Dr. Buchanan.
- He's still tied up.
- Where are they now?
They took off after I
jumped out of the van.
They were headed, uh,
north on Eagle Ridge Road.
How long ago was that?
30 minutes, tops.
Mark, where are you?
I don't know. I
A dirt road somewhere?
Where are we?
Lake Trail Road, near Mile Seven.
Mark, how bad is the woman's injury?
I-I don't know. There
was a lot of blood.
Do you know why you were kidnapped?
No. No idea.
Okay, hang tight. An
officer will be there soon.
[GILLIAN] All units
suspects are travelling in a black van,
"Seedlings Florist" logo on the side.
Last seen heading north
on Eagle Ridge Road.
Eagle Ridge leads right to Bear Lake.
They're on their way here.
Suspects are
Lisa-Marie Lamont, 38,
Mêkwan Marchand, 27.
These women are armed and dangerous.
Most likely headed for
a cabin at Bear Lake.
They still have one
hostage Dr. Doug Buchanan.
We need to bring him home, safely.
Command, we're setting
up outside the cabin.
If they come this way, we'll have them.
[BOLTON] Copy.
[♪]
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERS]
[BUCHANAN] She's losing a lot of blood.
She needs immediate medical care!
- [SPEAKING CREE]
- I don't want you to
Takes more than a
bullet to keep me down.
Keep going!
[♪]
Sir, based on the location
where we found Mark Davies,
we can estimate that they are about
two kilometers south of
the Bear Lake turn-off.
6103, suspects should be
two kilometres south of the cabin.
What's your E.T.A.?
[VINCE] Coming from the
north end, on Eagle Ridge.
I'm still four clicks out.
[BOLTON] Sohal and Kalaini
are closer, but step on it.
Sohal, Kalaini, 6103's nearest backup,
but the suspect van
could get to you first.
Copy.
[♪]
[POWER-UP CHIME]
[♪]
Oh, shit!
Should've been here by now.
Command, still no sign of the van.
What the hell happened?
Could your math be wrong?
No. They-They must've turned off.
There's nowhere to go.
[GILLIAN] Unless they
drove right past the exit.
The cops found the cabin!
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERS]
[♪]
[ZAK] Camera.
We've been made.
[BOLTON] 6103
suspects may have diverted from cabin.
Could be headed your way.
Copy.
It's okay!
[♪]
If you run, I will shoot you.
- [DOUG GRUNTS AS BINDS SNAP]
- Stand up! Turn around!
- [SNAP]
- Help her.
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERS]
[♪]
[SHOUTS] Hands in the air!
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERING]
[♪]
Just do as I say, and
no one will get hurt.
[DOOR THUMPS SHUT]
[DOUG] She's losing blood.
Could be internal bleeding.
- I can help her.
- You're not touching me!
Get back from her!
Sit down!
Do you have a first-aid kit?
[DOUG] You need to keep
pressure on the wound.
You have to keep her warm.
Shut up!
[GASPING THROUGH PAIN]
Grab that quilt.
[♪]
What's your name?
- Tom.
- Thank you, Tom.
[DOUG] You should elevate her feet.
[♪]
[WHIMPERS]
Hey it's gonna be okay, nitôsis.
[♪]
[CAR DOOR CLOSING]
[QUIET, UNSETTLING THEME RISES]
[♪]
[MÊKWAN] Put pressure on her wound.
[♪]
[LISA-MARIE GASPS]
[♪]
It's the cops.
Command, we've located
the suspect vehicle.
It's outside of a country store
"Homestead Treasures."
Address is 47 Meadow View Lane.
6103, what's your 20?
[VINCE] Five minutes away.
Covering.
[♪]
Don't let them in.
Tell them you have hostages in here.
My girl, you can do this from in here.
[WINDOW THUDS]
Get back!
We've got hostages in here!
Command, suspects in the store
we think they've taken more hostages.
- [BOLTON] How many more?
- Unsure at this point.
We'll get an Emergency
Response Team out there.
We're gonna need an ambulance.
[BOLTON] Copy.
Tox screen, my friend.
What exciting things
are happening in the
world of crime today?
Hello?
Have we identified which woman was shot?
[ZAK] It's likely Lisa-Marie Lamont.
Mêkwan Marchand is holding court.
What about Dr. Buchanan? Alive?
[SABRINA] Yeah, we think so.
Get E.R.T. on the line.
Possible hostage extraction.
[VOICE SHAKING] Auntie?
I need your help.
Commander, this is
Superintendent Eli Bolton.
What's your E.T.A.?
We've got to get inside,
keep those hostages safe.
No. We need to keep her
calm until E.R.T. gets here.
You take point.
Probably best if they
hear a female voice.
[PANTING ANXIOUSLY]
[TENSE THEME PLAYS]
[♪]
[SOHAL] Mêkwan?
Mêkwan? My name's Sabrina.
I'm with the CFPC.
I understand that your aunt's hurt.
We want to help. We can figure this out.
Can you just tell me what is going on?
That idiot journalist shot her!
Can you let her out,
so we can get her to the hospital?
No hospitals.
Stick to the plan.
[MÊKWAN] No hospitals!
[SABRINA] Okay, no problem, Mêkwan.
Can you tell us if Dr. Buchanan is okay?
He's alive
for now.
[♪]
We need a first-aid kit!
All right, I've got one in the car.
I'm gonna bring it to you, okay?
Sabrina
it's too risky.
We've got a woman in
there with a gunshot wound.
- She might not make it.
- I'll throw the kit onto the porch.
I need to get close enough to her
- to talk to her one-on-one, if I
- [SHARPLY] Sabrina.
[GENTLY] No.
[♪]
Gillian, we need a phone
number for Mêkwan Marchand.
[GILLIAN] On it.
[♪]
There's more cops.
It's okay. They can't do anything.
Not with other people in here.
[♪]
[ZAK] Suspects are inside.
One seriously wounded, and
they've got more hostages.
- How many?
- Don't know.
Tell them we'll get
'em the first-aid kit
if she tells us how
many hostages she has.
Okay.
[♪]
Mêkwan?
I've got the first-aid kit,
I'm gonna get it to you,
but I need to know how
many people you have
in the store with you, first.
- Three.
- [QUIETLY] Command, 6103.
Subjects have three more hostages.
Four, including the doctor.
Copy. Can we get visuals?
[VINCE] Negative. Two
vehicles parked in front.
Might belong to the people inside.
I'm sending photos of the plates.
I've got a cell number for Mêkwan.
Sending it now.
[TEXT ALERT CHIMES]
- Yeah, got it.
- [BOLTON] Our number-one priority
is to get those hostages out of there.
- [MÊKWAN, ON PHONE] Hello?
- [SABRINA] Hi. It's me, Sabrina.
Thought it'd be easier
for us to talk by phone.
We're gonna toss the first-aid kit
onto the porch, okay?
Okay.
Don't try anything stupid.
[♪]
Auntie, they're gonna throw a
first-aid kit onto the porch.
How many months?
Eight.
I'm so ready for her to come out.
[♪]
[SETS CHAIR DOWN]
Thank you.
- Gauze, tape gloves
- [GRAVEL CRUNCHING]
[VINCE] Someone's coming.
[♪]
Where is the first-aid kit?
Tenille! What are you doing here?
I'm here to help.
Well, there's no body.
It's a hostage situation.
I know.
[♪]
[MÊKWAN] We need the first-aid kit!
Look, our people don't trust the police.
You know that!
Let me take them the first-aid kit.
- It's not safe, Tenille.
- Yeah, Zak's right.
She has a gun. She's escalating now.
She needs to see a friendly face.
An Indigenous face. Please.
What if we put a vest on her?
- We'll cover her from here.
- [MÊKWAN] What's taking so long?
[ZAK] It's coming!
Okay. All right, okay,
but you stay low,
and you head for the
right side of the building,
and stay out of the line of fire.
You toss the kit on the
porch and you head right back,
and the minute you feel
like you're in danger,
you give us the signal,
we'll be there, okay?
Okay.
All right, I'll call Mêkwan.
[♪]
[LINE RINGING]
- [AGITATED] Hello?
- Hadii, Mêkwan.
Si sozi, Tenille.
Yinka Dinee'.
Wet'suwet'en, Gitumden Dees Day.
My name's Tenille.
I'm Wet'suwet'en.
I belong to the Bear Clan.
I'm gonna bring you
the first-aid kit, okay?
[CALMER] Okay.
[♪]
All good.
Auntie, a-a Wet'suwet'en woman,
she's she's gonna
bring the first-aid kit.
[WHIMPERING WEAKLY]
Auntie? Auntie! It's coming.
[QUIET, UNCERTAIN THEME RISES]
[♪]
Give me a "test"?
Testing? Testing?
- Can you hear me in your ear?
- Mm-hmm.
Okay. All right.
[♪]
Are you ready?
[TENSE THEME PULSES WITH DANGER]
[♪]
Mêkwan?
- Are you alone?
- Yes.
[ZAK] Okay, Tenille,
drop it on the porch.
[♪]
Tenille, do you copy?
Tenille, resume your position.
[QUIETLY] I know what I'm doing.
[♪]
Hi. I've got the kit.
Thanks.
I have medical training.
I'd like to help Lisa-Marie.
[ZAK] Tenille, stand down!
[♪]
Okay.
[♪]
What the hell's she doing?
[ZAK] Tenille, do you copy?
Got it. Thanks.
Lisa-Marie, I'm Tenille.
- How're you doing?
- Just a little pinch on the left side.
Well let's take a
look at that little pinch.
Tenille?
- [STATIC CRACKLING]
- You hear that crackling?
[ZAK] Yeah.
We can hear her, but she can't hear us.
[♪]
Okay
[CRYING OUT]
Okay. You're doing great.
- [GROANS]
- [APPROACHING SIREN WAILING]
[LINE RINGING]
[PHONE BUZZES]
Yeah?
Mêkwan,
the ambulance has arrived.
How's Lisa-Marie doing?
She's gonna be fine.
Thanks for sending in Tenille.
Yeah. No problem.
And how about you? You doing okay?
- Yeah.
- That's good.
It's probably been a bit
of a stressful day for you.
[♪]
I know that you and Lisa-Marie
must have a good reason
for why you took Dr. Buchanan.
But the other people in there
they have nothing to do with that.
How 'bout you let them go?
- I'll think about it.
- [♪]
[SABRINA] I appreciate that. Thank you.
I'd like to understand what happened.
Can you tell me why
you took Dr. Buchanan?
He knows why he's here.
[♪]
And, soon, the whole world
will know, too.
What will they know, Mêkwan?
[DARK THEME SWELLS]
[♪]
[SILENCE FALLS]
- I pushed too hard.
- [VINCE] No, you did great.
You've got her talking.
You're calming her down.
These things take time.
Gillian, how far away is the E.R.T.?
[GILLIAN] I wish that
I had an answer for you.
There's a multi-car
crash on the Alex Fraser.
They're stuck in traffic.
We can't wait any longer.
We've got to get Tenille out of there
and negotiate the
release of the hostages.
[♪]
She's going into hypovolemic shock.
- What does that mean?
- If you don't get her to a hospital soon,
she's gonna die.
[SNAPS IN HER LANGUAGE]
[CALMLY] Her body
temperature is dropping.
She needs blood and oxygen.
I'm right here, nitôsis.
She's dying!
[ROARS] And it's all your fault!
Mêkwan! She still has a pulse.
Let me take her to a hospital.
[MÊKWAN] A hospital?
His death chamber!
Are you Christian, Doctor?
What's that saying?
"An eye for an eye"?
[MÊKWAN, SHAKILY] No No, no, no.
No! No! It wasn't
supposed to go like this!
Mêkwan
please, put the gun down.
[MÊKWAN] This isn't how
it was supposed to happen!
Lisa-Marie wasn't supposed to get shot.
The journalist wasn't
supposed to get away!
- [TENILLE] Mêkwan.
- [MÊKWAN] We just wanted the world to know!
[TENILLE] I know.
We wanted them to know!
[VINCE] Come on, they're escalating now.
We've gotta get 'em out now.
[DARK THEME SURGES WITH INTENSITY]
[♪]
[COOLLY] And it's all your fault.
Please, no.
I have a wife, kids
You have kids?
How nice for you.
Mêkwan
please
don't do this.
You don't know what he did to us!
[SHAKING] Yes! I do.
I know because he did it to me, too.
[♪]
I was only 25 years old.
[♪]
I was having pelvic pain
and my doctor said
that Buchanan was the
best ob-gyn there was.
I went to you for help.
I thought I was having
a minor operation.
I didn't find out
what you had done to me
until I was 34!
[♪]
[SEETHING] But I have buried
that pain for a lot of years,
until I found out what
was happening here.
[RAGES] Still? You are still doing this?
[ROARS] How many?
[♪]
Lisa-Marie and Johnny
they had a bad car accident.
Their daughter, Riel,
was only two years old.
She died on impact.
Took a long time to heal.
When she was finally
ready to have another baby,
she couldn't get pregnant,
so she went and she saw
a reproductive specialist,
who told her that she
had been sterilized.
[♪]
She was in shock.
She'd had a C-section
delivery with Riel.
Dr. Buchanan
did that surgery.
Dr. Buchanan
sterilized her!
[♪]
My partner and I tried to have a baby
[SNIFFLES]
and we couldn't.
So I went to the same specialist
and she told me that
I'd been sterilized, too.
[♪]
She held my hand and cried with me.
I went to the police, and
they didn't believe me!
It was my word against a white doctor.
Lisa-Marie and I both filed complaints
with the B.C. Medical Board,
but nothing happened.
We went to the media
nothing happened.
That's why they did this.
[♪]
They kidnapped Davies so they
could get their story out there.
[♪]
No one ever listened!
No one ever listens.
And it's all Buchanan's fault.
They're listening now, Mêkwan!
I've been live-streaming
the whole thing.
[♪]
[MÊKWAN] Tell me why you did it.
- I didn't do anything wrong!
- You sterilized us!
I performed tubal ligations!
I was acting in what I thought
was the patient's best interest.
What is it that you believe?
You say that you have
compassion towards women?
What about us?
You don't think that we're not women?
We're not human?
You are a murderer!
You stole life from us!
[♪]
What gave you the right to play God?
Look at me.
Look me in the eyes and tell me that
I'm not worthy of being a mother!
[ROARS] You're not!
[SEETHING] Indians are unfit!
Mentally defective undesirables
who shouldn't be having kids!
[TENILLE SOBS]
[♪]
[SIRENS APPROACHING]
[SABRINA] Hey! Stop!
[VINCE] Stand down. Stand down!
[TACTICAL GEAR JOSTLING]
Whoa. Easy. Easy.
I have to kill this monster,
so that he doesn't steal
any more life from us.
[OFFICER] Go for the windows!
[OFFICER 2] Building's covered!
- [TENILLE] Mêkwan
- Any last words, Doctor?
[SHAKILY] Mêkwan, we have
to let these people go.
We have to get Lisa-Marie to a hospital.
In the next three minutes,
one of those officers
is going to take a shot,
and you will be dead.
Lisa-Marie will be dead
and he wins!
You don't think that they'll
shoot us if we walk out there?
They don't care if we live or if we die!
Nobody does!

How you doing, friend?
Si tsini,
my grandma
used to take me into the bush
to pick wild strawberries
the "heart berry," she called it.
Women's medicine.
And she'd hold one up and she'd say,
"My girl
yin tidilk'i'n
is the only berry
that has seeds on the outside,
and each one of those little seeds
is carrying life inside."
[TENILLE SNIFFLES]
"Yin tidilk'i'n
is taking care
of hundreds of her babies
right in front of your very eyes "
[DARK, SPARE INSTRUMENTAL RISES]
"And one day, you will, too."
[TENILLE SOBS]
[♪]
I met a Métis woman awhile back
"Auntie Jo,"
and she shared something with me, uh,
she heard from a Chief.
There's no concept of
justice in Cree culture
the closest word would
be kintohpatatin
which, uh
translates into
"you have been listened to."
I heard you Tenille.
I heard you with my whole heart.
Misiyh, Vince.
- Yeah.
- Thank you.
Oh
I [SOBS]
yeah
[SNIFFS DEEPLY, SIGHS]
[SABRINA] It was a long day.
The women are filing a
lawsuit against Buchanan and
other doctors across Canada.
So
Mêkwan and Lisa-Marie
[SNIFFLES] go to prison,
and Buchanan will get up tomorrow
and go back to the operating room.
Canadian doctors have been sterilizing
Indigenous women without their consent
for over a hundred years.
Michif Senator Yvonne Boyer
has been trying
to get a bill passed to make it illegal.
12,000 cases
of forced or coerced sterilization
against our sisters,
our cousins, our aunties, our mothers
[HEAVING SOB]
When is it gonna end?
[EXHALES, WROUGHT]
I'm sorry, Tenille.
You know, the video that
Eva took, it went viral.
Every news station in the
country is covering it.
There's not a person who won't know
what Buchanan did.
It's more than people knowing, Sabrina.
It's about being believed.
[SNIFFLES]
[♪]

Previously, on Allegiance
- How's Will doing?
- I don't know.
I haven't been able to reach him.
He's not safe in there.
You say you've got connections.
Maybe it's time to use 'em.
[KLASSEN] If you're gonna kiss my ass,
at least you can have the
decency to drink with me.
There he is.
So, Brambilla
You deliberately ignored that
call and got someone shot.
We can't drop everything
and come running
every time Sohal calls.
I'm gonna be watching you
memo books, arrest sheets
you won't so much as
sneeze without me knowing.
In fact, I'm gonna make it my business
to see that both your
asses are chained to a desk
after what you pulled today.
- Is that a threat?
- [VINCE] No! It's a promise!
[ASHA, SOBBING] He
was getting out for me,
and you sent him back in,
just so you could get what you needed.
But what about me?
What do I tell my baby?
Asha, I'm so sorry.
[DR. BUCHANAN] As physicians,
we have an obligation
to inform our patients
of the risks and benefits
of all medical procedures.
We must respect whatever
our patient chooses.
Coercion, force,
and uninformed consent
are morally and ethically odious.
[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]
[DOOR RUMBLING]
Great talk.
I love your dedication to your patients.
Thank you. It's vitally
important that we, as caregivers,
adhere to our duty to do no harm.
Does that include billing practices?
Mark Davies, CBBT news.
I've got a source on record
saying that you've been
billing BC Health Care
for services you never provided.
- Any comment, Doctor?
- That's ridiculous.
False hours worked,
fake services provided
to a tune of 1.6 million.
Mr. Davies, I strongly suggest
that you get your facts straight
before making such reckless
and defamatory accusations.
[FLOOR BELL DINGS]
If you'll excuse me,
I have a high-risk C-section to perform.

Heard Jones and Trinh are on desk duty.
- Oh, yeah?
- They should've been fired.
Abduction in progress.
Be on the lookout for a black SUV
with a catering logo on the side.
Last seen exiting
the Lower Mainland University parkade.
Two suspects.
Armed and dangerous.
Copy, en route to LMU.
[SIREN BEGINS WAILING]
[VINCE] And you think you saw
one of the men carrying
a cordless vacuum cleaner?
- Yes.
- Are you sure it wasn't a gun?
The other guy had a gun.
This guy had a vacuum cleaner.
I've gotta pick up my son
from baseball practice.
- Yeah, well, he's gonna have to wait.
- He's 10!
Obviously, you don't have kids, asshole.
Keep it up! Yeah, and I'll arrest you
for obstruction of justice.
You got it
- asshole?
- Officer Gabinski! A minute?
[INDISTINCT INVESTIGATION
DIN IN BACKGROUND]
- Yeah?
- What're you doing?
I'm doing my job.
Do it less forcefully.
You look like crap, Gabby.
You drink again and you're
done. You know that, right?
Hey
[DOORS THUDDING]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS]
[VINCE] You get stuck in the chaos?
- It's complete gridlock.
- Yeah.
We lost our suspect
vehicle at 200th and 56th.
I heard something about
traffic lights not working?
They went berserk.
Changing colours at whim.
- Fender benders everywhere.
- And our suspect vehicle?
Well, they made it through by
the skin of their teeth. Gone. Poof.
Well, let's hope they
left something here for us.
- What do we got?
- The witness says
she saw two men wearing bandanas
shoot a guy
and toss his body into a black SUV.
It said "Mother's Feast
Catering" on the side.
- She didn't hear a gunshot.
- Silencer?
Maybe. But there's no
sign of blood anywhere.
She get a description of the victim?
- Too far away.
- CCTV camera over there.
Any idea which of the
vehicles belongs to our victim?
Not yet. We're still questioning people.
It's gonna take awhile.
I've got Forensics taking photos
of all the cars and plates.
I'll get 'em to Gillian
as soon as they're done.
All right, thanks, Vince.
Oh
our witness was pretty sure
she saw one of the abductors with a, um,
cordless vacuum cleaner.
I don't know, maybe they're neat freaks.
It's a busy university
parkade, middle of the day
these guys are brazen.
Sabrina.
This is Taser confetti.
[♪]
There's only four of them.
Taser cartridges usually
deploy between 20 to 30.
- Yeah.
- So this witness wasn't seeing things
these guys had a
cordless vacuum cleaner.
Well, with any luck, the anti-felon I.D.
tags on these little guys
will lead us straight to our abductors.
[GILLIAN] All units
catering vehicle just spotted entering
Waterfront Industrial Park.
Command, 6103. On our way!
Nah, no, no, no. You're riding shotgun.
Let's go.
[GABBY POUNDS HATCH]
[GILLIAN] 6103, we're
also getting reports
of explosions at
Waterfront Industrial Park.
[SIREN WAILS]
Command, 6103.
Located the suspect vehicle in flames.
- Anyone in the vehicle?
- Negative.
Looks like they deliberately
set the SUV on fire.
How the hell'd they just disappear?
Getaway vehicle?
[♪]
Anything back on the Taser AFIDS?
Uh, ahem, I traced them
back to a place in Seattle.
Reported stolen three years ago.
Most likely sold on the Dark Web.
What about the parkade's CCTV footage?
Nothing but snow but
I do have some good news.
I, uh, I narrowed down
the names for the vehicles
parked on the 6th-level parkade,
and the only one who
hasn't picked up their car
is, uh, CBBT journalist Mark Davies.
[SABRINA] Was he working
on a story at LMU?
[PRODUCER] Never mentioned
anything to me about it.
What about enemies or recent threats?
It's an everyday occurrence.
Mark's an investigative journalist
pisses a lot of people off.
We're gonna need to see his work laptop.
I can't do that.
He's got highly-sensitive
material on that laptop.
Confidential sources.
Privileged conversations.
You're gonna need a warrant.
Well, we've got a well-known journalist
abducted by two men in bandanas.
And they had a
meticulously laid-out plan.
Knew exactly where he'd be this morning,
and precisely where he parked his car.
They're tech-savvy, sophisticated
scrambled CCTV cameras,
signal-jammers, stolen Taser
Yeah, took great steps to
leave no evidence at the scene.
This level of strategy
and organization
it doesn't seem like the
work of one or two people.
What if we have a mastermind
pulling the strings?
Yeah, but so far, no
ransom note or demands.
So what do they want?
What's their end game?
Mark Davies investigates stories
around political and
financial corruption.
Then maybe he exposed
someone or something.
A politician, C.E.O.,
a real estate mogul
had them fired, or arrested.
[HITTING KEYS]
There're over a hundred
search results for Mark Davies.
He's exposed a lot of
high-profile people.
Some powerful people.
But why take him?
If he ruined them, why not just
kill him there, in the parkade?
What if it's not a story
he's already written?
What if he's working on something new,
and someone wants to stop
him from exposing them?
Your in-house computer genius
was able to crack Davies' password
three minutes after getting the warrant.
Boom! That's a new record.
Thanks, Gill.
Try his calendar,
see if he had any meetings at LMU.
[SABRINA] No. Nothing.
No morning meetings.
Dentist appointment in the afternoon.
'Kay. What about this
"new story ideas" folder?
- [WHACKS KEY]
- "Rise of financial extortion
on South-Asian businesses in Surrey."
Big enough story to put
him in someone's crosshairs?
Some of these extortionists
have been known
to shoot at, burn down
people's businesses, homes,
so, I'd say yes.
"Longshoremen union
being run by a biker gang
known to import drugs
and guns via cargo ships."
Well, so far, we're two for two.
I'll take the longshoreman.
All right, I'll keep
looking at the laptop,
get Vince to take the other owners.
And, hopefully, our
"in-house computer genius"
finds something on the
industrial yard CCTV.
Just speed it up to
before the van arrived.
Wow. Somebody needs a Happy Meal.
Give us a sec, Gill? Mm?
Yeah. Come on.
What's up? Ahem.
- Go home.
- What?
Yeah. Take your attitude and
your hangover out of here.
Oh, come on, Vince.
I'm this close to reporting you.
Really?
[CHUCKLES BITTERLY]
Okay.
[THEME SWELLS WITH DARKNESS]
[♪]
- Sorry about that. Where were we?
- Yeah.
[♪]
Organized Crime Unit
has been surveilling the
longshoremen for almost a year.
Mark Davies definitely wasn't a target.
If he was working on a story,
the bikers didn't know about it.
Well, Vince talked to a few of
the South-Asian business owners,
and none of 'em say a
word about being extorted.
Maybe out of fear of retaliation?
They all denied knowing Mark Davies.
It's Gillian.
CCTV from the industrial
yard was tampered with.
That's three times now.
These guys are like cyber-ninjas.
What are we missing here?
Well, I checked all the morning events
going on at the university
women's soccer practice,
sustainable innovation seminar,
and an ethics lecture with
renowned gynecologist Dr. Doug Buchanan.
Okay, not exactly
hard-hitting news stories.
Hey, wait. What time did
Dr. Buchanan's lecture end?
11:30.
That's around the same time
Mark Davies was abducted.
[KEYS CLACKING]
[SABRINA] I'm gonna search "Buchanan".
Mark got a tip that Dr. Buchanan
was defrauding BC
Health for $1.6 million.
[GILLIAN] Abandoned vehicle at LMU, P5.
- On our way!
- Silver Mercedes.
License plate Tango
Mike-Romeo, zero-six-eight.
Registered to Doug Buchanan.
- [DOOR SHUTS]
- [SABRINA] There it is.
[♪]
Oh. The hood's open.

Fuel line's been cut.
Zak

[♪]
A journalist and a doctor.
What's the connection here?
They could be working
on a story together.
Yeah. Maybe someone
wanted to silence them
before they exposed something?
Well, someone's got to know something.
Dr. Buchanan has a private practice.
In my experience, receptionists
see all, hear all, know all.
Have there been any threats
made against Dr. Buchanan?
- Threats? No!
- What about complaints?
There have been
absolutely no complaints.
Not one disgruntled patient?
Detective, I have worked with
Dr. Buchanan for over 10 years,
and I can tell you this
not only is he an exceptional ob-gyn,
he's one of the most caring
doctors you'll ever meet.
But he might be in real danger.
So, if there is anyone
that you can think of
There was this one ex-patient.
She came storming into the office,
with her husband,
both of them yelling and
waving their arms around,
and demanding to speak Dr. Buchanan.
No decorum whatsoever.
[DISDAINFULLY] You know
how these people are.
"These people"?
They're Ind
[WHISPERS] they're Indigenous.
I started to call the police,
but Dr. Buchanan stopped me.
He's a very compassionate man.
What was the patient's name?
Lisa-Marie Lamont.
[DARK, THRILLING THEME PLAYS]

[GILLIAN] A Dr. Buchanan is
officially listed as "missing".
[ZAK] Thanks, Gill. We're just
arriving at the Lamont residence.

No sign of anyone.

[ZAK] Clear!
[♪]
Clear.
[♪]
Doesn't look like anyone's
been here for years.
[GILLIAN] Sabrina, I've got
something on Lisa-Marie Lamont.
Go, Gill.
She was in a terrible car
accident two years ago.
She and her husband
and their two-year-old daughter, Riel,
were coming back from a powwow
when they were hit by a drunk driver
who was a 20-year-old
university student.
Her daughter died on impact.
Lisa-Marie was seriously injured.
She spent months in the hospital,
and, um, it looks like
her marriage fell apart
a year ago. She's archived photos
of her and her husband
from around that same time.
[SABRINA] Thanks, Gill.
I wouldn't come back here, either.
[♪]
[SABRINA] Zak?
[♪]
[CLICK]
[RUMBLING]
[♪]
[ZAK] Holy crap!
[SABRINA] This is surveillance
of Davies and Buchanan.
Someone's been working
on this for months.
[ZAK] Sabrina, look at this.
"Fake stories to reel in journalist."
- Look at the circled one.
- "Fraudulent billing.
Buchanan steals 1.6
million from tax payers."
It's the anonymous tip that
we found on Davies' laptop.
- They set him up.
- It's a big story.
Of course he's gonna follow up.
Right after Dr. Buchanan's talk,
they abducted him.
They must've nabbed him
just before or just after.
Okay, so we have the
how question is, why?
High-end recording equipment,
professional backdrop
they wanted Davies to
broadcast something.
They wanted Buchanan to
say something on-camera.
What if Lisa-Marie wanted
her undisclosed complaint
to become public?
So maybe our kidnappers aren't two men?
They're a husband-and-wife duo.
Gillian, can you pull an address
on Lisa-Marie's ex-husband?
[GILLIAN] Yep. Just give me a sec.
Uh he's in the Yukon,
working at a diamond mine.
- You're sure?
- Yeah,
I got his socials right
here in front of me.
He posted a pic outside the mine
- So who's our second kidnapper?
[♪]
[VAN RUMBLING OVER ASPHALT]
This is gonna work, right?
It's me and you.
We got this.

Looks like her death
ripped their family apart.
[♪]
Yeah, I don't think I could go on.
Sadly, some parents don't.
Sabrina.
It's maybe a sister?
Gillian I'm sending you a photo.
Need to know the woman
next to Lisa-Marie.
[GILLIAN] Copy.
Zak, I got two stencils here.
One for "Mother's Feast Catering,"
and the other
Their getaway vehicle.
Gillian, we think our suspects
may be travelling in a van
- with a "Seedlings Florist" logo on it.
- Copy.
And I was able to do a
reverse match on that photo.
The woman beside Lisa-Marie
is Mêkwan Marchand
she's Lisa-Marie's niece.
There's a lot of comments
about her being a computer whiz.
And get this she is
also another former patient
of Dr. Buchanan's.
[♪]
[GROANING SOFTLY]
Sir, I've got one of
the hostages on the line.
[BOLTON] Patch him through
to Sohal and Kalaini.
- [KEYS CLACK]
- Hey, Sabrina?
I've got Mark Davies on the line.
I'm putting him through now.
[MARK] I was abducted. I just escaped.
- It was two Native women.
- Mark
They had a gun.
There was a struggle.
It went off, one of the women was shot.
I took off, I ran for my life.
Mark, I need you to slow down, okay?
- You said two women?
- Yes.
All right, and w-where
did you escape from?
Uh, a big van like the
kind that carries mail.
They had another guy, Dr. Buchanan.
- He's still tied up.
- Where are they now?
They took off after I
jumped out of the van.
They were headed, uh,
north on Eagle Ridge Road.
How long ago was that?
30 minutes, tops.
Mark, where are you?
I don't know. I
A dirt road somewhere?
Where are we?
Lake Trail Road, near Mile Seven.
Mark, how bad is the woman's injury?
I-I don't know. There
was a lot of blood.
Do you know why you were kidnapped?
No. No idea.
Okay, hang tight. An
officer will be there soon.
[GILLIAN] All units
suspects are travelling in a black van,
"Seedlings Florist" logo on the side.
Last seen heading north
on Eagle Ridge Road.
Eagle Ridge leads right to Bear Lake.
They're on their way here.
Suspects are
Lisa-Marie Lamont, 38,
Mêkwan Marchand, 27.
These women are armed and dangerous.
Most likely headed for
a cabin at Bear Lake.
They still have one
hostage Dr. Doug Buchanan.
We need to bring him home, safely.
Command, we're setting
up outside the cabin.
If they come this way, we'll have them.
[BOLTON] Copy.
[♪]
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERS]
[BUCHANAN] She's losing a lot of blood.
She needs immediate medical care!
- [SPEAKING CREE]
- I don't want you to
Takes more than a
bullet to keep me down.
Keep going!
[♪]
Sir, based on the location
where we found Mark Davies,
we can estimate that they are about
two kilometers south of
the Bear Lake turn-off.
6103, suspects should be
two kilometres south of the cabin.
What's your E.T.A.?
[VINCE] Coming from the
north end, on Eagle Ridge.
I'm still four clicks out.
[BOLTON] Sohal and Kalaini
are closer, but step on it.
Sohal, Kalaini, 6103's nearest backup,
but the suspect van
could get to you first.
Copy.
[♪]
[POWER-UP CHIME]
[♪]
Oh, shit!
Should've been here by now.
Command, still no sign of the van.
What the hell happened?
Could your math be wrong?
No. They-They must've turned off.
There's nowhere to go.
[GILLIAN] Unless they
drove right past the exit.
The cops found the cabin!
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERS]
[♪]
[ZAK] Camera.
We've been made.
[BOLTON] 6103
suspects may have diverted from cabin.
Could be headed your way.
Copy.
It's okay!
[♪]
If you run, I will shoot you.
- [DOUG GRUNTS AS BINDS SNAP]
- Stand up! Turn around!
- [SNAP]
- Help her.
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERS]
[♪]
[SHOUTS] Hands in the air!
[LISA-MARIE WHIMPERING]
[♪]
Just do as I say, and
no one will get hurt.
[DOOR THUMPS SHUT]
[DOUG] She's losing blood.
Could be internal bleeding.
- I can help her.
- You're not touching me!
Get back from her!
Sit down!
Do you have a first-aid kit?
[DOUG] You need to keep
pressure on the wound.
You have to keep her warm.
Shut up!
[GASPING THROUGH PAIN]
Grab that quilt.
[♪]
What's your name?
- Tom.
- Thank you, Tom.
[DOUG] You should elevate her feet.
[♪]
[WHIMPERS]
Hey it's gonna be okay, nitôsis.
[♪]
[CAR DOOR CLOSING]
[QUIET, UNSETTLING THEME RISES]
[♪]
[MÊKWAN] Put pressure on her wound.
[♪]
[LISA-MARIE GASPS]
[♪]
It's the cops.
Command, we've located
the suspect vehicle.
It's outside of a country store
"Homestead Treasures."
Address is 47 Meadow View Lane.
6103, what's your 20?
[VINCE] Five minutes away.
Covering.
[♪]
Don't let them in.
Tell them you have hostages in here.
My girl, you can do this from in here.
[WINDOW THUDS]
Get back!
We've got hostages in here!
Command, suspects in the store
we think they've taken more hostages.
- [BOLTON] How many more?
- Unsure at this point.
We'll get an Emergency
Response Team out there.
We're gonna need an ambulance.
[BOLTON] Copy.
Tox screen, my friend.
What exciting things
are happening in the
world of crime today?
Hello?
Have we identified which woman was shot?
[ZAK] It's likely Lisa-Marie Lamont.
Mêkwan Marchand is holding court.
What about Dr. Buchanan? Alive?
[SABRINA] Yeah, we think so.
Get E.R.T. on the line.
Possible hostage extraction.
[VOICE SHAKING] Auntie?
I need your help.
Commander, this is
Superintendent Eli Bolton.
What's your E.T.A.?
We've got to get inside,
keep those hostages safe.
No. We need to keep her
calm until E.R.T. gets here.
You take point.
Probably best if they
hear a female voice.
[PANTING ANXIOUSLY]
[TENSE THEME PLAYS]
[♪]
[SOHAL] Mêkwan?
Mêkwan? My name's Sabrina.
I'm with the CFPC.
I understand that your aunt's hurt.
We want to help. We can figure this out.
Can you just tell me what is going on?
That idiot journalist shot her!
Can you let her out,
so we can get her to the hospital?
No hospitals.
Stick to the plan.
[MÊKWAN] No hospitals!
[SABRINA] Okay, no problem, Mêkwan.
Can you tell us if Dr. Buchanan is okay?
He's alive
for now.
[♪]
We need a first-aid kit!
All right, I've got one in the car.
I'm gonna bring it to you, okay?
Sabrina
it's too risky.
We've got a woman in
there with a gunshot wound.
- She might not make it.
- I'll throw the kit onto the porch.
I need to get close enough to her
- to talk to her one-on-one, if I
- [SHARPLY] Sabrina.
[GENTLY] No.
[♪]
Gillian, we need a phone
number for Mêkwan Marchand.
[GILLIAN] On it.
[♪]
There's more cops.
It's okay. They can't do anything.
Not with other people in here.
[♪]
[ZAK] Suspects are inside.
One seriously wounded, and
they've got more hostages.
- How many?
- Don't know.
Tell them we'll get
'em the first-aid kit
if she tells us how
many hostages she has.
Okay.
[♪]
Mêkwan?
I've got the first-aid kit,
I'm gonna get it to you,
but I need to know how
many people you have
in the store with you, first.
- Three.
- [QUIETLY] Command, 6103.
Subjects have three more hostages.
Four, including the doctor.
Copy. Can we get visuals?
[VINCE] Negative. Two
vehicles parked in front.
Might belong to the people inside.
I'm sending photos of the plates.
I've got a cell number for Mêkwan.
Sending it now.
[TEXT ALERT CHIMES]
- Yeah, got it.
- [BOLTON] Our number-one priority
is to get those hostages out of there.
- [MÊKWAN, ON PHONE] Hello?
- [SABRINA] Hi. It's me, Sabrina.
Thought it'd be easier
for us to talk by phone.
We're gonna toss the first-aid kit
onto the porch, okay?
Okay.
Don't try anything stupid.
[♪]
Auntie, they're gonna throw a
first-aid kit onto the porch.
How many months?
Eight.
I'm so ready for her to come out.
[♪]
[SETS CHAIR DOWN]
Thank you.
- Gauze, tape gloves
- [GRAVEL CRUNCHING]
[VINCE] Someone's coming.
[♪]
Where is the first-aid kit?
Tenille! What are you doing here?
I'm here to help.
Well, there's no body.
It's a hostage situation.
I know.
[♪]
[MÊKWAN] We need the first-aid kit!
Look, our people don't trust the police.
You know that!
Let me take them the first-aid kit.
- It's not safe, Tenille.
- Yeah, Zak's right.
She has a gun. She's escalating now.
She needs to see a friendly face.
An Indigenous face. Please.
What if we put a vest on her?
- We'll cover her from here.
- [MÊKWAN] What's taking so long?
[ZAK] It's coming!
Okay. All right, okay,
but you stay low,
and you head for the
right side of the building,
and stay out of the line of fire.
You toss the kit on the
porch and you head right back,
and the minute you feel
like you're in danger,
you give us the signal,
we'll be there, okay?
Okay.
All right, I'll call Mêkwan.
[♪]
[LINE RINGING]
- [AGITATED] Hello?
- Hadii, Mêkwan.
Si sozi, Tenille.
Yinka Dinee'.
Wet'suwet'en, Gitumden Dees Day.
My name's Tenille.
I'm Wet'suwet'en.
I belong to the Bear Clan.
I'm gonna bring you
the first-aid kit, okay?
[CALMER] Okay.
[♪]
All good.
Auntie, a-a Wet'suwet'en woman,
she's she's gonna
bring the first-aid kit.
[WHIMPERING WEAKLY]
Auntie? Auntie! It's coming.
[QUIET, UNCERTAIN THEME RISES]
[♪]
Give me a "test"?
Testing? Testing?
- Can you hear me in your ear?
- Mm-hmm.
Okay. All right.
[♪]
Are you ready?
[TENSE THEME PULSES WITH DANGER]
[♪]
Mêkwan?
- Are you alone?
- Yes.
[ZAK] Okay, Tenille,
drop it on the porch.
[♪]
Tenille, do you copy?
Tenille, resume your position.
[QUIETLY] I know what I'm doing.
[♪]
Hi. I've got the kit.
Thanks.
I have medical training.
I'd like to help Lisa-Marie.
[ZAK] Tenille, stand down!
[♪]
Okay.
[♪]
What the hell's she doing?
[ZAK] Tenille, do you copy?
Got it. Thanks.
Lisa-Marie, I'm Tenille.
- How're you doing?
- Just a little pinch on the left side.
Well let's take a
look at that little pinch.
Tenille?
- [STATIC CRACKLING]
- You hear that crackling?
[ZAK] Yeah.
We can hear her, but she can't hear us.
[♪]
Okay
[CRYING OUT]
Okay. You're doing great.
- [GROANS]
- [APPROACHING SIREN WAILING]
[LINE RINGING]
[PHONE BUZZES]
Yeah?
Mêkwan,
the ambulance has arrived.
How's Lisa-Marie doing?
She's gonna be fine.
Thanks for sending in Tenille.
Yeah. No problem.
And how about you? You doing okay?
- Yeah.
- That's good.
It's probably been a bit
of a stressful day for you.
[♪]
I know that you and Lisa-Marie
must have a good reason
for why you took Dr. Buchanan.
But the other people in there
they have nothing to do with that.
How 'bout you let them go?
- I'll think about it.
- [♪]
[SABRINA] I appreciate that. Thank you.
I'd like to understand what happened.
Can you tell me why
you took Dr. Buchanan?
He knows why he's here.
[♪]
And, soon, the whole world
will know, too.
What will they know, Mêkwan?
[DARK THEME SWELLS]
[♪]
[SILENCE FALLS]
- I pushed too hard.
- [VINCE] No, you did great.
You've got her talking.
You're calming her down.
These things take time.
Gillian, how far away is the E.R.T.?
[GILLIAN] I wish that
I had an answer for you.
There's a multi-car
crash on the Alex Fraser.
They're stuck in traffic.
We can't wait any longer.
We've got to get Tenille out of there
and negotiate the
release of the hostages.
[♪]
She's going into hypovolemic shock.
- What does that mean?
- If you don't get her to a hospital soon,
she's gonna die.
[SNAPS IN HER LANGUAGE]
[CALMLY] Her body
temperature is dropping.
She needs blood and oxygen.
I'm right here, nitôsis.
She's dying!
[ROARS] And it's all your fault!
Mêkwan! She still has a pulse.
Let me take her to a hospital.
[MÊKWAN] A hospital?
His death chamber!
Are you Christian, Doctor?
What's that saying?
"An eye for an eye"?
[MÊKWAN, SHAKILY] No No, no, no.
No! No! It wasn't
supposed to go like this!
Mêkwan
please, put the gun down.
[MÊKWAN] This isn't how
it was supposed to happen!
Lisa-Marie wasn't supposed to get shot.
The journalist wasn't
supposed to get away!
- [TENILLE] Mêkwan.
- [MÊKWAN] We just wanted the world to know!
[TENILLE] I know.
We wanted them to know!
[VINCE] Come on, they're escalating now.
We've gotta get 'em out now.
[DARK THEME SURGES WITH INTENSITY]
[♪]
[COOLLY] And it's all your fault.
Please, no.
I have a wife, kids
You have kids?
How nice for you.
Mêkwan
please
don't do this.
You don't know what he did to us!
[SHAKING] Yes! I do.
I know because he did it to me, too.
[♪]
I was only 25 years old.
[♪]
I was having pelvic pain
and my doctor said
that Buchanan was the
best ob-gyn there was.
I went to you for help.
I thought I was having
a minor operation.
I didn't find out
what you had done to me
until I was 34!
[♪]
[SEETHING] But I have buried
that pain for a lot of years,
until I found out what
was happening here.
[RAGES] Still? You are still doing this?
[ROARS] How many?
[♪]
Lisa-Marie and Johnny
they had a bad car accident.
Their daughter, Riel,
was only two years old.
She died on impact.
Took a long time to heal.
When she was finally
ready to have another baby,
she couldn't get pregnant,
so she went and she saw
a reproductive specialist,
who told her that she
had been sterilized.
[♪]
She was in shock.
She'd had a C-section
delivery with Riel.
Dr. Buchanan
did that surgery.
Dr. Buchanan
sterilized her!
[♪]
My partner and I tried to have a baby
[SNIFFLES]
and we couldn't.
So I went to the same specialist
and she told me that
I'd been sterilized, too.
[♪]
She held my hand and cried with me.
I went to the police, and
they didn't believe me!
It was my word against a white doctor.
Lisa-Marie and I both filed complaints
with the B.C. Medical Board,
but nothing happened.
We went to the media
nothing happened.
That's why they did this.
[♪]
They kidnapped Davies so they
could get their story out there.
[♪]
No one ever listened!
No one ever listens.
And it's all Buchanan's fault.
They're listening now, Mêkwan!
I've been live-streaming
the whole thing.
[♪]
[MÊKWAN] Tell me why you did it.
- I didn't do anything wrong!
- You sterilized us!
I performed tubal ligations!
I was acting in what I thought
was the patient's best interest.
What is it that you believe?
You say that you have
compassion towards women?
What about us?
You don't think that we're not women?
We're not human?
You are a murderer!
You stole life from us!
[♪]
What gave you the right to play God?
Look at me.
Look me in the eyes and tell me that
I'm not worthy of being a mother!
[ROARS] You're not!
[SEETHING] Indians are unfit!
Mentally defective undesirables
who shouldn't be having kids!
[TENILLE SOBS]
[♪]
[SIRENS APPROACHING]
[SABRINA] Hey! Stop!
[VINCE] Stand down. Stand down!
[TACTICAL GEAR JOSTLING]
Whoa. Easy. Easy.
I have to kill this monster,
so that he doesn't steal
any more life from us.
[OFFICER] Go for the windows!
[OFFICER 2] Building's covered!
- [TENILLE] Mêkwan
- Any last words, Doctor?
[SHAKILY] Mêkwan, we have
to let these people go.
We have to get Lisa-Marie to a hospital.
In the next three minutes,
one of those officers
is going to take a shot,
and you will be dead.
Lisa-Marie will be dead
and he wins!
You don't think that they'll
shoot us if we walk out there?
They don't care if we live or if we die!
Nobody does!
[DRUMS BEGIN POUNDING]
[♪]
[WOMEN'S VOICES RISING
IN TRADITIONAL SONG]
[TENILLE GASPS AND SOBS]
[DRUMS BEATING, WOMEN
SINGING IN THEIR LANGUAGE]
[SINGING "THE WOMEN'S WARRIOR SONG"]
[♪]
[THROUGH TEARS] They're
here for you, Mêkwan
for Lisa-Marie.
[WARRIOR SONG CONTINUES
OVER POUNDING DRUMS]

[DRUMS RESUME POUNDING]
How you doing, friend?
Si tsini,
my grandma
used to take me into the bush
to pick wild strawberries
the "heart berry," she called it.
Women's medicine.
And she'd hold one up and she'd say,
"My girl
yin tidilk'i'n
is the only berry
that has seeds on the outside,
and each one of those little seeds
is carrying life inside."
[TENILLE SNIFFLES]
"Yin tidilk'i'n
is taking care
of hundreds of her babies
right in front of your very eyes "
[DARK, SPARE INSTRUMENTAL RISES]
"And one day, you will, too."
[TENILLE SOBS]
[♪]
I met a Métis woman awhile back
"Auntie Jo,"
and she shared something with me, uh,
she heard from a Chief.
There's no concept of
justice in Cree culture
the closest word would
be kintohpatatin
which, uh
translates into
"you have been listened to."
I heard you Tenille.
I heard you with my whole heart.
Misiyh, Vince.
- Yeah.
- Thank you.
Oh
I [SOBS]
yeah
[SNIFFS DEEPLY, SIGHS]
[SABRINA] It was a long day.
The women are filing a
lawsuit against Buchanan and
other doctors across Canada.
So
Mêkwan and Lisa-Marie
[SNIFFLES] go to prison,
and Buchanan will get up tomorrow
and go back to the operating room.
Canadian doctors have been sterilizing
Indigenous women without their consent
for over a hundred years.
Michif Senator Yvonne Boyer
has been trying
to get a bill passed to make it illegal.
12,000 cases
of forced or coerced sterilization
against our sisters,
our cousins, our aunties, our mothers
[HEAVING SOB]
When is it gonna end?
[EXHALES, WROUGHT]
I'm sorry, Tenille.
You know, the video that
Eva took, it went viral.
Every news station in the
country is covering it.
There's not a person who won't know
what Buchanan did.
It's more than people knowing, Sabrina.
It's about being believed.
[SNIFFLES]
