The Sounds of Silence

??? ger You started flirting with me long before I started flirting back.
I just came to say goodbye.
I violated my parole, and I have to turn myself in.
And we're gonna go to New York, just you and me, and you're gonna see Amy, and you're gonna tell her.
Is it so hard for you to believe that Ricky has feelings for me? Stay away from Ricky.
I'm not even used to the idea, and I'm your best friend.
Well, get used to it 'cause I'm having a baby, and I'm happy about it.
She decided to keep the baby.
That's it.
[Bunny.]
I hired her for the day.
I'd hire her for longer if she didn't already have plans.
She's good.
If Lauren doesn't have Madison to talk to, you're gonna get a lot of action.
Did you know you were living here? Temporarily.
I told you you can't live here.
Tom really wanted me to move into the guest house.
Amy, Adrian's pregnant, and it's my baby.
Come on.
Pick up! We're all worried about you, Amy.
You pick up that phone right now! Right now, young lady! That's not gonna work.
Well, what is gonna work? Nothing.
She's clearly not talking to any of us.
No.
She's talking to some of us.
She's talking to you? She wouldn't talk to her.
Well, I didn't call her.
And I'm not going to call her until she grows up, and maybe not even then.
Well, so who's Amy talking to? Ricky? No, not Ricky.
Why would she talk to Ricky? Ricky knew.
Ricky didn't tell her.
Why would she talk to him? 'Cause he's John's father.
Oh! She's talking to John.
Go get John.
Maybe if we get John on the phone with her, she'll talk to John, and then we can get in on the conversation.
Trick her? Yeah.
Now you're catching on to parenting.
When did you two start scheming together? Oh, God.
I think I'm finally coming around to liking your father again.
Well, don't rush into anything.
Take your time.
You know, you may like him now, but when you two grow up, you may not like each other at all.
Maybe the three of us could scheme together this time.
Maybe the three of us can find out a way to get Amy on the phone to see if she's okay.
You want in? No, I don't want in.
And are you sure you want in? You have to take a step back and really look at the relationship.
Decide with your head if you want to scheme with Dad, no matter what you feel in your heart.
Okay, the advice that I gave to you about Ricky does not necessarily apply to your father and me.
But if I did try to look at the relationship objectively, and if I were deciding if it would be the right thing to do-- to be married to your father again-- then right now I'd say that maybe it's the right thing to do.
Yes! No.
Too late.
You said yes.
No.
I said if I were deciding.
I'm not deciding.
Not yet.
It sounded like you were deciding.
No, I was thinking about deciding.
I was thinking that maybe I would decide something soon, if you're still interested.
I'm still interested.
Good to know.
Oh, where's John? I thought we were gonna call Amy.
Ricky's still getting him ready.
So? So? Sooo? Maybe.
Maybe yes? Maybe yes.
You think we could make that a definitely yes? I'm feeling pretty good about things right now.
That makes me really happy, Anne.
Good.
I'm happy, too.
Would you like to go out to dinner tonight, just the two of us? Spend a little time together outside of bed? Would you like to spend some time with me outside of bed? I would.
Then it's a date.
I mean she'll get over it.
She already knew that they slept together, and she forgave him for that.
So it can't be that big a leap to forgive him for this.
I don't know why everyone's so concerned about it.
I don't know why everyone's so concerned either.
I just know why I'm concerned about Amy.
Oh? And why is that? Because she's the mother of my son.
So what? So what? So she's someone I care about.
She's the person I care about most next to him.
[door opens.]
[fussing.]
Hey, Amy.
I'm sorry about Ben and Adrian, and-- and I'm sorry about Ricky and me.
I wish I had never kissed him.

I mean, sometimes they do those things 'cause they don't know anything else to do to survive.
So here's what I'm thinking-- or what Bunny's thinking.
Maybe we could offer your mom a job here.
It might help her get out.
She just went in.
Yeah, well, I think we could get her out.
She deserves another chance, don't you think? She's had lots of chances.
This is probably her hundredth chance.
Yeah.
But you never know.
This time, she might turn around.
She might not.
She might.
How are you gonna get my mother out of jail? [chuckles.]
Pay someone? No, no, no.
Nothing like that.
Then what? You have a friend in the DA's office or something? We both have a friend in the DA's office, don't we? Oh, no.
I'm not asking Adrian's father for a favor.
I don't want anything to do with her or her family.
And your son just got his daughter pregnant.
You're gonna ask him for a favor? I'm happy you pointed that out.
Well, not happy, but since you brought it up, you're right.
I'm hardly in a position to be asking Ruben for a favor.
Me? No, I don't wanna ask.
I only ask people for favors for myself, okay? And someday, I might need a favor from Ruben.
And I don't wanna use up my favors on my mother.
She is your mother.
Yeah, she is.
But she's not really a mother, less the foster parents and my other mother, Margaret.
Now, if Margaret needed a favor-- any favor-- I'd do anything for her that I could do because she's always been there for me.
Which is not the case for my other mother, the one who's in jail.
Who wants her out of jail anyway? Bunny.
Bunny likes her.
She needs somebody here during the day.
It's a lot busier during the day.
She said your mother was really good with people.
Of course she's good with people.
She was a-- Oh, I'm sorry.
I'm-- I'm really sorry.

Boykewich, you don't know my mother.
You don't want my mother working here, believe me.
You don't.
Son, you know me.
You know I believe in giving people another chance-- a chance to straighten out their lives and to do the right thing.
Did you just call him "son"? Thanks a lot.
[chuckles.]
[exhales forcefully.]
[phone humming.]

Where else can you have a meal in a room that has a couch for after the meal, huh? My house, that's where.
Ahhh.
You're everything Donovan said you'd be.
Come on, my friend.
This is money well spent here.
You and your lover are gonna have a good time.
She's not my lover.
She's my wife.
We'll see.
Oh, cookies again.
I smell Ben.
Yeah, he's coming over.
I don't know what time, but after he gets back with Adrian from her first OB-GYN appointment.
Oh, dear honey.
Adrian's first OB-GYN appointment? Grace, you r-- [scoffs.]
I don't even know what to say.
Well, you don't have to say anything.
I know you don't want me to go out with him, but I am.
All right.
Well, you're a big girl.
You can decide for yourself what's right for you.
That's right.
I can decide what's right for me.
And I know that it's slightly unorthodox for me to be going out with a guy who's having a baby with my best friend, but if that's what I wanna do, then that's what I wanna do.
You married a guy nine months after Dad died.
A lot of women wouldn't have done that either.
Uh-huh.
Okay.
Well Here.
I got this for you at the market.
What is it? It's a new product for your skin.
You wash your face with it in the morning, and not only does it get your skin clean, it gives you a burst of energy.
So if your date doesn't go so well tonight, tomorrow morning, you get up, you use this, and maybe you get enough energy to do something else, Grace.
Something that's good for you, and maybe even something that's good for somebody else.
Something, uh, beautiful instead of something slightly unorthodox.
Did you get one for yourself? Oh, wait.
It's too late.
You married the guy.
[scoffs.]
Tom, you said you were going out tonight.
I was, but Adrian had an appointment, and she can't go.
Well, what kind of appointment? I mean, if she's getting her hair done or nails or something, she'll still have plenty of time to go out.
Doctor's appointment.
Oh.
Maybe you should go with her.
I don't think so.
I have a date, and I was really looking forward to having the place to myself.
Oh, really? Really.
You could rent my half for the evening.
[sighs.]
How much? It will cost you a lot of money.
That's all right.
I got three other people that'll pitch in.
Name the price, and it better not be more than 20 bucks.

Well, I'm already babysitting, at least until my dad gets back, and then I think I'll do something else-- something fun, something just for me.
I don't think I'll be that long.
I should be back by 9:00.
No.
Why not? All right.
Don't do this, okay? You know I care about your sister, but you also know I care about you.
Do I know that? No, I don't know that.
Ashley, we agreed to be friends.
So what, that moves Amy into first place? [chuckles.]
I said she was second place behind John.
I didn't mean it the way you're trying to make it sound.
I care about Amy in a very different way than I care about anybody else.
Oops, you did it again.
Look, just take the kid with you wherever you're going, 'cause Aunt Ashley is not keeping him tonight.
[sighs.]
You owe me.
I don't owe you.
I don't owe you anything.
Yeah, you do.
Oh, how do you figure? You told your sister that you kissed me.
Oh, so you are talking to her.
Not really.
She didn't give me any time to explain.
So you know what? You explain.
You explain it to her.
I'll be home around 9:00.
Where have you been? Mani-pedi.
Took forever.
Fridays, you know.
Got just enough time to grab a shower, then time to grab your mother.
Hand me your phone.
Huh.
Your phone was off.
All right.
Mom had to go to Mimsy's.
What? No! Yeah, that's what I said.
But the grifter is speaking at some seminar, and Mimsy has the flu.
No! No, no! Look, if you make them cry, I'm gonna get really angry.
I paid a grand to get the backroom at Lonzo's just for your mother and me.
This was my comeback night.
I thought you were back already.
Oh, this is the stupidest divorce ever.
A grand! She can't not go! You paid $1,000 just to get the back room at a restaurant? It's got a couch.
And that's not all.
I got a violin and a rose.
Couldn't you go stay with your grandmother? Oh, and how would I get there? Where's Ricky? Whcouldn't he take you? Oh, he had some kind of stupid appointment.
That's why I'm babysitting John.
Oh, this can't be happening.
Damn! I think I broke a nail.
You're not going in with me.
Oh.
Of course not.
But what actually happens here in the office? Never actually been in an office before.
I usually just go to the clinic, but with my mom and dad married now, I've got really good insurance.
And me and my dad.
So if this place or this doctor are not to your liking, then we can go someplace else.
Ricky's mom recommended him.
His practice is teen mothers.
His? Yeah.
His? Stop.
You're making me nervous.
I am so sorry.
That patient canceled and rescheduled, and we already had you coming in, so I didn't want to cancel your appointment.
I'm Dr.
Attavi.
Adrian.
Hi.
Hi.
And you are? I'm the father.
That was my next question.
What's your name, Dad? Uh, he's more like a friend.
But I'm still the father.
Oh, uh, Ben Boykewich.
Boykewich.
You're not related to that Sausage King, are you? [imitating Leo.]
I am The Sausage King.
You got that? [chuckling.]
He's the prince, son of The Sausage King.
Oh.
I'm sorry.
I hope that was a fair impersonation.
Pretty much.
Yeah.
Great.
Well, welcome, Your Majesty.
So are you excited about the baby? I am, now that you're here.
You see, I was dating this guy, and he had a baby with Ben's girlfriend, and so, I slept with Ben.
But unfortunately, I was on a new pill, and the condom broke, and now this guy isn't speaking to me, and Ben's girlfriend isn't speaking to him.
That's the worst that's happened-- people aren't speaking to each other.
That's very civilized.
Nothing like my high school.
And, um, when were you in school? In high school? I'm sure way before you were born.
How old are you? I'm old enough to deliver a baby.
I've delivered quite a few.
[chuckles.]
Yeah, you look like you'd be good at it.
[chuckling.]
Excuse me.
This isn't going the way I was thinking it should go.
And how was that, Ben? Well, for one, you're not a woman.
No, I'm not a woman.
But I am in practice with my mom.
It's a mother-son practice.
So there are times when a woman may have to fill in for me.
Oh, no.
I can wait.
For you, I mean.
[chuckles.]
That's very nice of you.
I'm assuming this is your first baby? Mm-hmm.
Well, sometimes babies don't wait.
They kind of have their own schedule.
So you think you're about seven weeks? Yes.
I'm absolutely certain.
Oh, right.
