Allegiance (2024) s03e10 Episode Script
Remember Me
1
Previously, on Allegiance
Let's just grab a bite tonight.
I can't, I've got
some stuff to wrap up here.
- Just forget it.
- Nate!
- [VINCE] How'd you find out?
- After you mentioned that domestic case
how the guy got away
with murdering that woman,
I knew there was more to it.
[SABRINA] Oliver Campbell conspired
to frame my father for treason,
- [BOLTON] He'll be facing charges
of breach of trust, corruption,
and obstruction of justice
as a result of the Stephen Rechy case.
This time, we're nailing
his ass to the wall.
- [BANG]
- [WOOD CRASHING]
[SABRINA] Subject is missing,
and there are signs of flight.
Oliver Campbell is now
a fugitive of the law.
[QUIET, SUSPENSEFUL THEME RISES]

[CASE THUMPS DOWN]
[♪]
Jesus
[GLASS HITS FLOOR]
What do you want?
Money?
Take anything.
Take whatever you want.
Remember me?
Please. Please.
Well
I remember you.
[SHOT FIRES]
[GLASS SHATTERING]
[♪]
[♪]
[SABRINA] We've had officers stationed
at bus depots, train stations
His passport hasn't flagged at
airports or border crossings.
His phone's been off all night.
He's completely off-grid.
He knew that we were coming.
What I'm about to say
stays in this room.
Understood?
We have a mole in this detachment.
More than one, maybe.
There are cops here
loyal to Oliver Campbell,
they may be feeding him information.
Okay, from now on,
not a word about this
investigation to anyone.
No radios, no headsets.
Cell phones only.
[PHONE BUZZES]
We've got a murder.
I'd like to stay on the search.
You got a job to do, Sohal.
[KNOCK AT DOOR]
Hey. You wanted to see me?
[BOLTON] Are we straight?
Yes, sir.
[♪]
[DOOR SHUTS]
I shared your theory with them.
Yeah, I've got my most trusted officers
- looking for him now.
- Good.
I talked to Gabinski. You sure
you want to keep him on active duty?
Yeah. Campbell's got inside guys.
He might be the only one
who can lead us to one.
That's the only reason
you're going to bat for him?
Once we have Campbell in custody,
Gabinski will be dealt with properly
regardless of how you feel.
Fine.
Vince.
That thing Gabinski mentioned
about you and the domestic case.
Tch.
Is there anything you want to tell me?
Anything you want to know?
I believe you're needed
at a murder scene.
[♪]
[SIRENS WAILING]
Detectives.
- Deceased is
- [ABRUPTLY] What are you doing here?
Deceased is Greg Tanner.
Ahem. Neighbour heard
something like a gunshot,
about 8 p.m. last night,
but she was watching
Law & Order: Toronto,
so didn't think much of it.
His assistant found him this morning
when he didn't show up for court.
- He's a lawyer?
- He's a judge.
Hey, Sabrina?
I want Campbell to pay
for what he did to Vince
just as much as you do.
I can't believe that
Bolton let you walk.
He didn't. I did.
Bolton wanted to suspend
him for breach of trust.
I asked him not to.
Sabrina, Campbell was dangling
his kid's life in front of him.
What was he supposed to do?
[♪]
Hey, Vince? Vince.
Thanks, man.
Just so we're clear you and me?
We're done.
What does that mean?
Like you said what
was I supposed to do?
You rode with me every day.
Every single day,
and all you had to do was ask.
All you had to do was say,
"Vince, I need your help,"
and I would have been there, but, no.
You lied to my face.
I would have told you
anything you needed
- to help your son.
- Oh, Vince
Just stay outside.
[♪]
Hey, Tenille.
What do we got?
Single gunshot to the forehead.
Entrance wound shows
GSR, burn, stippling.
Shot at close range?
Probably dead before he hit the floor.
- Nine mill?
- Yeah.
We found a casing by the fireplace.
Estimated time of death?
Rigor throughout the body
so, 8 to 12 hours?
I'll know more when I
get him back to the lab.
All right. Thanks, Tenille.
The shooter got up-close and personal.
Like he wanted the Judge to know
he was about to pull the trigger.
It's not your typical
M.O. for a B-and-E.
So, likely someone he knew.
Or someone he put behind bars?
Hey, Gill, are you there?
Always. What's up?
[SABRINA] I need you to look into
released inmates sentenced by
Judge Greg Tanner
specifically those with a history
of violence or B-and-E's.
- Copy.
- Thanks, Gill.
- [KEYS CLACKING]
- Any sign of forced entry?
No, nothing. Officers checked
every window and door.
Front and back are keypad entry.
So someone either knew the
code or hacked the system.
Not hard to do.
We'll get Forensics to check for prints.
Any ransacking, or anything stolen?
Doesn't look like it.
There are plenty of expensive things
just sitting out in the open.
One of my officers checked
the security system.
It connects to a USB,
but it was missing.
- Covering their tracks.
- [GILLIAN] Hey, guys?
I got a few hits on
potential suspects
Tyrel Devlin,
Anthony Jones,
and Abdul Khan
all sentenced by Judge Tanner.
Devlin and Jones did
time for home invasions
and assault.
Khan, for auto theft,
but I put him on the list
because he threatened Judge Tanner
during his trial.
[♪]
[ABDUL] Because of my
record, I must be guilty.
We read your case file.
You made direct threats
against Judge Tanner.
I called him a racist.
No, actually, you called
him "a racist piece of shit,"
and then you threw a pen at his head
and told him, when you got out,
you'd find him and kick his ass.
I was young,
I was terrified of going to prison.
I made a dumb mistake,
but I served my time, and then some.
- Meaning?
- When I got out,
I couldn't get a job, I
couldn't get an apartment.
Ended up living on the streets.
So I went door-to-door,
offering to paint,
clean yards, fix fences,
and I built this company
to give guys like me
- a fresh start.
- Guys like you?
Ex-cons.
When's the last time
you saw Judge Tanner?
My trial,
and all the stuff I said?
Ain't nothing compared
to what my lawyer said.
[♪]
[SABRINA] "You're destroying these kids.
I'm gonna come for you, sir.
One day, I am coming for you."
Look, I know how that sounds.
Am I proud of that moment? No.
Did I kill him?
No!
Mr. Collins,
your case with Abdul
Khan isn't the only run-in
where you've lost your
temper with Judge Tanner.
We also found your trespassing charge.
His ex-wife said you tried to break in.
I wasn't trying to break in.
He pushed the door in my
face. I tried to push it open.
I never wanted to end his life,
I just wanted to end his career.
Why?
He's a judge.
His oath to the justice system
is to remain impartial,
but he's the most biased judge
I've ever had the displeasure of facing.
And you have proof of this?
I've been a lawyer for over 20 years.
I've defended all kinds of people
and I mean all kinds
but whenever I have a racialized
client in front of him,
they get long sentences.
All minor offences
auto theft, ten years.
D.U.I., four years.
Judges have the right to impose
whatever sentence they deem appropriate.
Y [LAUGHS]
Then why does he give my other clients
community service, or house arrest?
Oh, I'll tell you
because they're all white!
- Big surprise.
- And that pissed you off?
[ROARS] You're goddamn
right, it pissed me off!
He never went after anyone who
had the means to fight back!
So I went to his house
to fight back for those who couldn't.
Why didn't you just file a complaint?
I did.
Several
with the Canadian Judicial Council.
And?
Waste of paper.
"Upon reviewing all the information
regarding this matter,
Council concludes that there
is no merit to the complaint
and no further measures will be taken."
Mr. Collins, you're a smart guy
a lawyer, probably a good one.
I'm sure you'd agree with me that things
are not looking too
good for you right now.
And you're probably a good detective
so you can tell when people
are being truthful or not.
I spent my whole life
fighting for justice,
and the truth is,
there are two systems of
justice in this country
one for the rich,
and one for the poor and racialized.
[♪]
Night cleaner vouched
for Robert Collins.
Saw him working in his
office until 11 p.m.
Abdul and his workers also alibied out.
They were at one of their kids'
birthdays at Chuck-E-Cheese.
A dad filmed the whole thing.
Collins had over 30 racialized clients
who were sentenced by Judge Tanner.
25 of them are Indigenous.
Numbers seem about right,
and it's not because they're
committing more crimes than others.
Yeah. Sentencing by race.
Collins can't be the only one
with a complaint against Tanner.
[GILLIAN] You were right.
There are quite a few complaints
from other lawyers against Judge Tanner.
Hang on. Scroll up?
There.
Nate Brugmann?
[♪]
Thanks, buddy.
That's got extra cheese, right?
Keep the change.
- [PHONE BUZZING]
- Appreciate it. Thanks.
He's not picking up. He's
probably grabbing lunch.
The client Nate was
defending against Judge Tanner
is Isaac Leclair.
He served 14 years in
Surrey Pen for a drug charge.
- 14 years?
- That's the max.
He's Indigenous.
If Robert Collins is right,
Judge Tanner may have
thrown the book at him.
Here's the complaint Nate filed.
He said, "Biased approach
to testimony ",
"racially-motivated sentencing."
He wasn't on our
violent-offenders list,
but he was just released six months ago.
We need to talk to Nate,
see if he knows anything about this guy.
[♪]
[♪]
Food trucks are just here on the right.
- [LINE RINGING]
- I'll try him again.
[PHONE BUZZING]
[EERIE THEME RISES AS PHONE BUZZES]
- [♪]
- Hey! Isaac.
It's good to see you.
- Move.
- What are you doing?
- I said move!
- [NATE GASPS]
Hey, you don't have to do this, Isaac.
Shut up.
[♪]
[NATE, ON VOICEMAIL] Hey,
you've reached Nate Brugmann.
I'm sorry I missed your call.
No answer.
[DOOR THUDS]
[PHONE LINE RINGING]
[PHONE BUZZING]
[♪]
[BOTH GRUNTING]
[ISAAC GRUNTS]
[♪]
[SHOT FIRES]
Shots fired!
[♪]
Move!
[♪]
[YELLING] Where'd he go? Where'd he go?
Nate!
Command, we need E.M.T. now!
[SABRINA] Nate! Open your eyes!
Nate, stay with me!
[SOBS] Nate, stay with me!
Nate!
[♪]
[BAG ZIPS OPEN]
[♪]
Is that the guy's backpack?
The bullet, it pierced Nate's lung,
it shattered his ribs.
He's lost a lot of blood.
He's gonna be in surgery for hours.
I don't know, Zak.
I can't just sit around.
[♪]
Brand-new coveralls.
Probably why no DNA
was found at the scene.
What's this?
Not sure. Haven't gotten there yet.
[♪]
That's pretty dark.
[♪]
[PHONE STARTS BUZZING]
Forensics just confirmed the
prints from that sketchbook.
[♪]
[BOLTON] All units be on the lookout
for Isaac Leclair,
35-year-old Indigenous male.
Suspect's wanted for murder
and attempted murder
both cases associated
with his incarceration.
He's armed and dangerous.
Proceed with extreme caution.
What do we know about Leclair?
Well, he went in when he was just a kid.
Uh, he was pulled
over on a traffic stop.
They found a few baggies
with joints in them.
They were labelled with names.
He was charged with
"intent to distribute".
They got a search warrant for his house
and found a grow-op.
That was just a few years
before pot was legalized.
Nate was his defence lawyer.
[SABRINA] Fresh outta law school.
An experienced lawyer
like Robert Collins
couldn't win a case in
front of Judge Tanner.
Nate didn't stand a chance.
So now he's out and he wants revenge?
Yeah, but he's been out for six months.
Find out. We don't know if
he's done or just getting started.
I need wellness checks done
on everybody involved in this case
law clerks, bailiffs,
investigating officers
Copy.
Two officers who arrested
Leclair at the traffic stop
Jack Hill and Thomas Whotton.
Hill is retired.
Whotton's now a firefighter.
Me and Gabby will take these two.
I'll have officers on the others.
How's Nate?
Well, he's still in surgery.
What's on this guy's record?
Uh, no priors, and no
history of violence.
What about his prison file?
Uh, he's a model prisoner
first two years
he taught art classes.
Then he started getting in fights.
Moved to a high-security
wing, stints in Solitary
He looks like a totally
different person.
Yeah, that's prison.
Hey, Gill?
Who's on his visitor's list?
[♪]
Isaac and I met at university.
He was an art student.
So funny
and kind
talented.
We fell in love.
You visited him every week for two years
and then just stopped.
Uh, the last time I saw him,
he just sat there, his
mind a million miles away,
and then he stood up,
told me not to come
anymore, and walked away.
Why the sudden change?
What happened?
Elizabeth died. His sister.
She was the whole reason
he was growing pot in the first place.
She had leukemia,
and it tore him apart to
see her in so much pain,
and he found a study that said
that marijuana could
help cancer patients.
Pauline,
when the CFPC raided his home,
they found a full grow-op.
He wasn't selling it.
He had baggies of joints
with people's names on them.
Isaac took Elizabeth
to all of her chemo appointments.
He met other cancer patients there
people who were in as
much pain as she was,
so he started bringing them pot.
And they charged him
with intent to distribute.
[♪]
[PAULINE] After Isaac went in,
Elizabeth's health fell apart,
and it's like the Isaac that I knew
just died, too.
And that's when he started
getting into fights?
Yeah, he was never a violent person
before he went in.
He could find life in
anything around him,
and turn it into art.
- Do you mind?
- No.
[♪]
We had a whole life planned.
Now this is all I have of him
of us.
Can you tell me about that painting?
Mm. Um
when Elizabeth was little,
she couldn't say her name.
She called herself "Lily-beth".
[CHUCKLING SOFTLY]
So, from then on,
Isaac called her "Lily".
It's the 12th anniversary of her death.
[♪]
[SABRINA] I swear, I saw
a lily in one of these.
Here. Yellow lily.
There.
[ZAK] Here's another one.
[♪]
[♪]
Zak, am I reading into this, or
does that look like a gavel to you?
The Judge.
[♪]
Guy plays squash every
week, same day, same place,
but not today?
Yep.
I should've told you.
What?
I should've told my wife the truth
when I hid my drinking.
I should've told Will I'd be there
[BITTERLY] and actually
show up for his games,
and I should've told
Campbell to go screw himself
when he wanted dirt on you
I should've done a lot of things, Vince!
[♪]
But I didn't.
[VOICE BREAKS] You're the one person
you've always had my back
I'm sorry.
[CHOKES UP] I'm sorry.
'Kay. Come on.
[CLAPS HIS SHOULDER]
[BOLTON] Vince, do we have an update?
Stand by.
[CLAPS GABBY'S SHOULDER]
We checked in with Thomas Whotton.
He's safe.
We stationed a uniform
outside his place.
Uh ahem, his wife said
he was playing squash this morning,
- but he never signed in.
- So where is he?
Drives a blue sedan, doesn't he?
- Gabby?
- Yeah.
There
the scales of justice?
It's Nate.
[♪]
It's unlocked.
[♪]
"Jack Hill."
Definitely his car.
Well, he's gotta be there somewhere.
[SABRINA] Handcuffs?
[♪]
He's going after a cop.
[SOMBER CHORDS STRIKING]
Hey, Vince?
[♪]
Eli?
- We found him.
- And?
Leclair got here first.
[♪]
[SIREN WAILING]
Entry wound is identical
to Judge Tanner.
[ZAK] Another point-blank kill?
Yeah, we found a nine-mill
casing in the bush.
Same M.O., same calibre.
It's lookin' like it.
I'm going to get our
friend here back to the lab.
Guys? Let's load him up.
Thanks, Tenille.
[VINCE] Hey. No witnesses.
No one heard the shot.
We asked the, uh,
centre to pull the CCTV.
We found this
- in his gym bag.
- It's a burner phone.
What's a retired cop
doing with a burner phone?
Was he meeting someone here?
Maybe. He had a 6:30 a.m. court time,
but never made it.
Isaac must've been waiting for him.
He knew his victims' routine,
where they were gonna be, at what time.
We need to find this guy
before he kills again.
- What's up?
- That phone.
When I first started
doing jobs for Campbell,
he gave me one just like it.
You think Hill was
one of Campbell's guys?
[ZAK] This is the only sketch left.
It has to be his next target.
The handcuffs lead back to Jack Hill,
but what about the other
arresting officer that day?
Thomas Whotton?
This looks like a police badge.
Uniforms did a wellness check earlier,
they said he was fine.
They stationed an
officer outside his home.
Maybe that scared Isaac off?
Yeah, except that Hill was
shot early this morning.
If Thomas was on Isaac's hit list,
wouldn't he have gotten to him already?
So why didn't Isaac go after him?
Yeah. I remember Isaac. [SIGHS]
I left the station a few
months after his arrest.
Thomas, we think he's
targeting the people involved
with putting him in prison 14 years ago.
So far, he shot the Judge,
the defence attorney
who worked his case
and the other arresting officer.
Jack?
and so, we're wondering why
nothing has happened to you.
Maybe it's because I
never wanted to arrest him?
Look, I knew, the minute
we pulled him over,
that kid was gonna
go down for something.
- [SABRINA] How?
- [THOMAS] Call it a hunch.
Jack was my T.O.
He was a total piece of crap.
Always went hard after the same folks.
Folks who weren't white?
Well, according to his arrest report,
he was pulled over for
a broken tail light?
Yeah, but that was bullshit.
Jack saw an Indigenous
kid behind the wheel.
- That's all it took.
- The charges were trumped up?
I mean, he had a few joints on him,
but he wasn't the trafficker
they made him out to be.
He said he was bringing
them to cancer patients.
I believed him.
I fought with Jack to let
it go, but it didn't matter.
He brought him in anyway?
Tased him, used excessive force
which is exactly what I
told my Commanding Officer.
I got reprimanded for insubordination,
so I walked.
Applied to the fire program at J.I.B.C.
Never looked back.
And Isaac went to prison for 14 years.
A few years after he went in,
I heard from him about
an appeal he was filing.
He was putting it together himself,
asked if I'd give a witness statement,
I said yes.
- Did you?
- I never heard from him again.
Figured he gave up.
[COMMAND DIN, INDISTINCT]
[SABRINA] Hey.
Anything on the appeal
Thomas Whotton mentioned?
Uh, y-yeah, it doesn't
look like Isaac filed it.
And what about the burner phone?
The thing's encrypted.
I'm trying to crack it now.
[VINCE] Hey.
So we looked into Jack
Hill's rec centre membership.
Guess who he had a
monthly squash game with?
Oliver Campbell.
Campbell's been known to use
burner phones just like that.
He gave me one when I was
When you planted false
evidence on my dad?
Where's the burner phone now?
I got rid of it.
Oh, yeah? How do we know?
How do we know that you didn't
tip Campbell off last night?
- [VINCE] Sabrina
- Vince.
Don't.
You know, my dad went
to prison because of you.
People thought he was a
criminal because of you.
His good name was ruined.
He was humiliated.
You don't get a pass,
Gabinski. Not from me.
[BOLTON] Sabrina?
Nate's awake.
[♪]
[♪]
[♪]
Hey.
[WEAKLY] You're here.
Of course I'm here.
How're you feeling?
He shot me.
Why?
We think he targeted you
because you were the defence attorney
on his case.
We think he's also targeting others
he blames for his incarceration.
Do you remember him?
I thought I could get Isaac
off with h half the time,
if he just pleaded out to the charges.
But Judge Tanner didn't see it that way,
he gave him 14 years.
Because of me.
Isaac is the reason
why I started working
for the prosecution.
Yeah, you wanted to put the
right people behind bars.
The arresting officer, Thomas Whotton,
he said that Isaac was working on
an appeal from prison.
[QUIETLY] Yeah.
I couldn't help him.
I wanted to, but
I mean, how do you
it was my own plea deal.
So he was doing it himself?
Do you know why he didn't
follow through with the appeal?
No.
He wouldn't stop.
I knew him. He-He-He wouldn't.
Someone else stopped him.
Thank you, Nate.
[NATE GROANS FAINTLY]
[♪]
[CLACKING]
[ZAK] F.O.I. requests?
Isaac was applying to get
the records of his arrest
court transcripts,
Officer Whotton's police notes.
For his appeal he was
trying to build his own case.
Just like Whotton said.
Yeah, except the requests were denied.
- All of them?
- Yeah. He filed them every three months
for two years straight
all of them were denied.
Yeah, no wonder he's pissed off.
- Denied, why?
- Uh
W it's different each time.
"No responsive records were located."
"The records requested
are not subject to Freedom
of Information Act."
And then there's an address
and a phone number he can call,
if he wants to lodge a complaint.
Just more red tape.
But it looks like Isaac
did file a complaint,
asking for a review with O.I.P.C.,
but, shocker
- it was denied.
- [SABRINA] Denied by who?
- It was Oliver Campbell!
- He wasn't Assistant Commissioner then.
Yeah, if he provides
a legitimate reason,
he can block any request.
And knowing Campbell,
he would've come up with any excuse.
Gillian, can you pull up the records
that Isaac was trying to access?
Already on it.
[ZAK] There.
That's the warrant from Isaac's raid.
He was out on bail when
police kicked his door down.
Arrested him in the middle of the night.
Took him right out of his house.
Yeah, and the raid was led
by the Chief Inspector
of the Drug Squad
Oliver Campbell.
He was in charge of the whole operation.
Isaac would've seen Campbell that night.
Gillian, can you pull
up Isaac's last sketch?
- Yep.
- [KEYS CLACKING]
[♪]
Zak, those are Inspector stripes.
Police badge, glasses?
He's going after Campbell next.
If we can get to Campbell first,
Isaac won't be far behind.
We need to crack that burner phone now.
Yeah, I'm on it.
I pulled the call logs
from Hill's phone
he only called one number,
last night, at 7:32 p.m.
[SABRINA] That's 10 minutes after
the arrest warrant for
Campbell was put out.
He called it again at 7:47 p.m.
That's right before we
stormed Campbell's house.
[GABBY] Can't be a coincidence.
That's got to be Campbell's number.
Gillian, can you locate that phone?
[GILLIAN] It'll only ping if
it makes a live connection.
Campbell assuming that it's him
would have to pick up
and stay on the line.
Yeah, but if he doesn't
hear Jack Hill's voice,
how do we keep him talking?
What if he doesn't hear any of us?
[♪]
Make the call.
[♪]
[EXHALING TENSELY]
[LINE RINGING]
[RINGING]
Start the signal.
[OLIVER CAMPBELL] Jack.
What the hell's the
matter with these phones?
[STATIC CRACKLING]
Jack?
Can you hear me?
Look, if you can hear me,
call me back when you
get a better signal.
[CALL TERMINATION BEEP]
Got him!
[EXHALES DEEPLY]
He's in West Van.
What the hell is he doing out there?
There's a marina
floatplanes, boats
he's skipping town.
Marina's closed for the season,
so there shouldn't be any civilians.
There's only one road in, here.
Guard shack, repair shop.
Diner. Diner's under construction,
so if he's inside, he's probably there.
- [KEYS CLACKING]
- Hey, we got a hit on Isaac.
Witness reported someone
with his description
stealing a black Toyota
Corolla in Guildford.
And there's another
reported sighting of him
heading west on Highway One.
- He's going after Campbell.
- How the hell
did he know he was in West Van?
Maybe got it from Jack
Hill before he shot him.
[BOLTON] Okay. We need to move.
Here's the plan.
[♪]
It's about time.
The passport took
longer than our guy said,
but you're good.
The boat is on its way.
The plane is waiting for you in Sechelt.
You'll be free and clear by tomorrow.
Good.
Did you hear from Jack today?
No. Should I?
He was having phone trouble,
but he should've checked in by now.
[REID] I'll text him.
[SNAPS] Let's get this boat here!
[REID] Yes, sir.
[BOLTON] New radios. These'll
connect you to Grove, and Grove alone.
We can't risk another leak.
I'm gonna use a specialized antenna
to create a closed-circuit
channel for us only,
but I'm gonna need to
