It all started back
when I was in middle school.
A very good friend of mine,
he became a target
of merciless bullying.
I wanted to save him
from it, I swear, I did.

a target myself,
so I just sat back
and watched it happen.
Then, one day
he tried to take his own life
by jumping to his death.

to such a desperate act.

Then, things got worse.
I thought my friend's suicide
attempt would be the end of it.
But it wasn't.
After that happened,
I saw the darkest depths
of the human psyche.
They were relentless,
my classmates just chose
new prey to hunt down
and bully.
I couldn't believe it.
They picked someone
who'd stayed out of it,
who'd just been a bystander
up to that point.
And the worst part of all
even the ones who'd just
tolerated the bullying
decided to join in
and start tormenting the kid.
It was horrific.
[AYANOKOJI] When the lowest
rung on the ladder disappears,
the second rung
from the bottom
gets pushed down
to supplant them.
While unfortunate,
it's a law of nature, in a way.
Nevertheless,
I was determined to stop it.
[HIRATA]
So I
I tried
to control them through fear.
In what way?
By using coercion and violence.
[HIRATA] And when no one was
willing to hit me back.
I created a new hierarchy.
With me on top, and everyone
else at the bottom.
If any conflict arose,
I dished out equal pain
and punishment to both sides.
As a result
I think I destroyed
the entire class year.
The others
just stopped smiling.
and started
conducting themselves
like a bunch of robots.
[AYANOKOJI] I see,
Yamauchi getting singled out
as the class pariah
brought back bad memories
of your
middle school experience.
[HIRATA] In the end,
I couldn't save Yamauchi
from expulsion.
And I was incapable of bringing
our class together, as well.
In trying to protect
one person,
I attempted to rule
through fear again.
Whatever you might think
about what happened,
it isn't Horikita's fault.
And it certainly isn't mine,
either.
You do you realize that, right?
[HIRATA]
Yeah, it was inevitable.
There was nothing
any of us could have done.
[AYANOKOJI]
I wouldn't go quite that far.
[gasps]

If you really wanted
to save him from it,
then you should have done
whatever it took,
without exception.

I did all I could!
But I still
wasn't able to save him!
Well, what about Ichinose?
She didn't have to sacrifice
any of her class.

you know it as well as I do.
Ichinose had all those
private points at her disposal!
So then, the issue was your
inability to spearhead
a similar initiative.
You're being unreasonable!
Maybe, but that doesn't matter.
Because it's still
the path that you had chosen.
You believed that our entire
class could be rescued.
And that was just a private
delusion of your own making.
[gasps]
And hey, if you want to keep
that dream alive, then fine.
But when you fail, you need
to carry all of the blame.
That's the commitment
the cause requires.

I guess I was wrong about you.
You see, I assumed that
you were a person of character,
who deserved
his peers' respect.
But that's not true.
You're nothing but a shallow,
boastful, helpless child.
Who thinks he can do
the impossible.
[gasps]

That's the truth.
[thudding]
How long do you expect
to keep this up?
[HIRATA]
This is who you really are.
You're not bluffing.
Those are pitiless words,
cold, and heartless.
[AYANOKOJI] You're free to want
whatever you want.
But if you really hope
to save everyone,
the only way
is to fight to the end,
and struggle within
the limits of the resources
available to you.
And then if, in spite
of all your best efforts,
someone still gets expelled,
you'll accept it
and keep moving forward.
Why does it
have to be so cruel?
Any hesitation on your part.
and you'll lose more
and more of your classmates.
For that reason
you need to keep your
eyes forward and fight hard,
to the very end.
And if you do,
when it's all said and done,
you'll find scores
of your peers standing
right behind you.
[HIRATA]

the whole burden myself,
and keep on going
with my head held high?
Tell me, where am I allowed to
show weakness in all of this?
[AYANOKOJI] When you
find yourself struggling,
you can ask your
other classmates for help.
You can show weakness to
whomever you choose to rely on.
It doesn't matter if they're
ahead of or behind you.
But is-is someone like me
suited to lead the class
in this battle?
The person you are now
can lead them safely,
and with confidence.
