Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent (2024) s04e01 Episode Script

Diplomatico

[NARRATOR]: In Toronto's war on crime,
the worst offenders are
pursued by the detectives
of the Specialized Criminal
Investigations Unit.
These are their stories.
[ECHOING GAVEL]
Stop chasing me!
Let's go! Let's go, let's go, let's go.
And never leave this on the ground.
Come on, Rocco! Inside.
Let's go. One, two, three.
Hold on. Okay. In, troops!
- Hey, ciao.
- Bye. Love you.
- I'll call you later.
- [ROCCO]: Bam! You're dead.
Woah, woah, woah. What's
that? Give me that.
Give me that! No guns. You know no guns.
Watch your toe-toes! In!
Do not spill that, Isabella.
You ready for this?
Eddie's been stewing since he got out.
Yeah, it's going to be great.
Family reunion, right?
You look good, all things considered.
Thank you.
Four years in the can.
Couldn't come visit your brother.
Yeah, well
One could say that I've been busy.
Yeah, I heard.
Getting your steps in,
making deals with the Vietnamese people?
What's next? Sisters of Charity?
Our thing ain't a labour union, Rocco.
Yeah, but we're making good money. Hm?
We're making great
money, and the cops
They're not on our ass.
I thought I was running
things pretty well.
What do you want, Eddie?
Rocco
You're my little
brother, and I love you.
But you're soft.
Now, I want to take back what's ours.
Make them fear us again, all of them.
How?
How are you going to do that?
What, from up here?
Hiding in your house?
[EDDIE GRUNTS]
Eddie, you pissed off so many people,
you're caged up here like an animal
too scared to leave the zoo.
Why don't you just leave it alone, huh?
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[MACHINES BEEPING]
[INDISTINCT PA ANNOUNCEMENTS]
Eleanor, can you squeeze my hand?
Eleanor, can you squeeze my hand?
Nicola, I don't want tea, I want coffee.
Leo, I need you to
get some sleep tonight.
You and that old fart doctor,
telling me I'm not fit to drive.
- The guy's older than you.
- What does he know, huh?
Yeah. Tell me your name again?
I'm Pete. I'm your godson, remember?
[LEO]: Oh, yeah.
- From the neighbourhood?
- [LEO]: Yeah.
I'm the guy that sneaks you coffee.
[PA SPEAKER]: Dr. Simms to neurology,
Dr. Simms to neurology.
Guy in 3B03 has been
sitting there all week.
He's giving me the willies.
He says he's a relative but
They're an odd couple for sure.
- Mm.
- I'm on it.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[FAINT COUGHING]
[MACHINES BEEPING]
Hey. What's your name?
I'm Pete.
Well, Pete, you're
creeping out the nurses
and visiting hours are over.
[MACHINES BEEPING]
[TENSE MUSIC]
[DRILL WHIRRING]
[DOOR OPENS]
Haven't seen you in a while.
I was meeting someone in Midland.
Figured I'd bring you your mail.
How are you doing, Tom?
Uh, hanging in there.
Made any friends yet? Girlfriend?
Yeah, well, it takes time.
Tom?
You okay?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm fine.
[LIGHTER CLICKS]
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
[SPEAKING ITALIAN]
Have a look at this, look at this.
Nosara. Look at that.
Beautiful. Nice and hippie,
lots of yogurt for Monica.
Acai bowls, five minutes from the beach.
- Howler monkeys.
- Howler monkeys.
[SPEAKING ITALIAN]
I grew up by the sea.
I'm booking it.
[SPEAKING ITALIAN]
- You only live once.
- Go enjoy yourself.
You gotta make it beautiful, right?
- [PHONE RINGING]
- The sun, the sand
[PHONE RINGING]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Alison! Another round here.
Okay. Be right back.
- Oh, hey.
- Hey.
Want a top-up? Coffee,
coffee, more coffee?
Today's your lucky day, because today
I'm thinking about food.
Oh, okay. Sock it to
me, what do you want?
I was curious about your pomodoro.
[TONY]: Pomodoro is
great. They make it fresh.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
I guess I'm having the pomodoro, then.
[TONY]: You've got to get the
pomodoro, bello e fresco
[GUNSHOTS]
[RESTAURANT PATRONS SCREAMING]
[PEOPLE CLAMORING]
Rocco!
- Alison, call 911!
- Okay.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[EXHALES]
[DISTANT SIRENS]
[THEME MUSIC]
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
- [SIRENS]
Goddamn mobsters doing what they do.
We don't know that yet.
- Come on, Bateman.
- We know what we know.
And what's that, Lombardi?
Victim is Rocco Cosentino,
the story kind of tells itself.
- What do we actually know?
- Let's start with the shooter.
Construction worker. Hard hat,
vest, duck mask dust mask,
that's weirdly hard to say.
[LOMBARDI]: Tall? Short? Black? White?
[OFFICER TORRES]: White.
Average height. Average build.
All anyone remembers is the hard hat.
And the vest.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
It's a crowded patio, how'd he get out?
He walked out there, turned right,
and nobody saw much after that.
[MUTTERS]
Scusi, Rocco.
- What about our victim?
- Was he sitting with anyone?
Tony Moretti, one of the owners here.
This other guy at the
table tried to help.
He's inside. Green jacket, beard.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Hey, I
I heard you were sitting with
our victim, tried to help?
I'm Detective Bateman, you
want to give me your name,
- tell me what happened?
- I already gave a statement.
I didn't ask if you gave a statement.
Tell me what you saw.
Can we talk about this outside?
Uh, I'd rather not.
- Okay.
- Mm-hmm?
Buddy came in from the southeast corner.
5'10", Caucasian,
left-handed, long hair.
Knew what he was doing, very focused.
Two shots to the chest,
walked out the side door,
went north up Clinton, disappeared.
Great disguise, seriously, like
[SMACKS LIPS]
The only thing anyone
saw was the orange vest.
That's not all you saw.
You might want to
check the alley behind.
My guess is this guy did a quick
change before he disappeared.
Bateman. We found his Halloween costume.
Dumpster out back.
You know what, I change my mind.
Let's talk outside.
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
- [FAINT SIRENS]
Okay, back to the wall,
strong observations,
calm under pressure,
first aid at the scene.
- You're on the job?
- Well, not anymore.
The guy I was looking
into is dead now, so
Detective John Darcy, Guns and Gangs.
Undercover?
Ah, undercover-lite, I
would say. I wasn't deep.
I was just getting to know the players.
I sat there over-tipping for two weeks,
said I was writing a novel.
Tony, the owner, also writing
a novel, God help us all,
introduces me to Freddie Fotoli.
Freddie likes basketball,
I get him tickets.
He tells Rocco.
Rocco and I bond over
the value of cold plunges
and the benefits of alkaline water.
Suddenly, I'm one of the regulars
at Rocco's four o'clock table.
People like talking to
writers, I guess, I don't know.
- [FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]
- [WHIMPERING]
Monica Cosentino. Rocco's wife.
Rocco's widow.
Word travels fast. Give me a minute.
- [PHONE RINGING]
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Look what the cat dragged in.
Who's the cat?
- I guess I'm the cat?
- [CLEARS THROAT]
Detective Bateman, Inspector Baptiste,
Guns and Gangs,
immediate supervisor to
Detective John Darcy.
I'm very excited to meet you, Inspector.
I've watched your Ted Williamson
interrogation on repeat for years.
You're a legend.
[CHUCKLING] Uh-huh.
What were you doing there, Detective?
Mob boss Rocco Cosentino
gets shot on a patio,
clearly a hit.
Did you guys know it was in the works?
Like, what, Minority Report?
Darcy's been working College
Street as an observer.
Rocco's estranged brother, Eddie,
got out of jail two months ago.
We wanted to keep eyes
on the whole family.
Mm. Well, what have you got, Detective?
The short version.
[SIGHS]
We all know the Cosentinos, right?
Calabrian Mafia going back 80 years now.
Dad dies; oldest son
Eddie takes up the mantle.
Eddie's a brute, he's vicious.
Good thing for everyone,
he ends up in prison.
Younger brother Rocco takes over.
Eddie doesn't love that, but
it's a story as old as time.
Cain and Abel, East
of Eden, Bobby and J.R.
Younger son succeeds anyway
Rocco, may he rest in peace,
he's low-key as boss.
Spends half his time researching
his next family vacation,
the other half betting bottles
of Peroni on World Cup soccer.
His buddy Luca keeps
trying to nudge him along,
keep him engaged in the
usual mom-and-pop stuff:
Drugs, counterfeit, extortion,
but Rocco's sitting back,
he's chilling.
Cute kids, nice wife, he's doing fine.
Two months ago, Eddie
gets out of prison.
That's where I come in.
Eddie's gonna want his turf back.
So, how's he gonna do it?
Funny thing, Eddie hasn't made a peep.
Guy doesn't leave his house.
Everything's copacetic.
Rocco hasn't bumped up security,
no sign of Eddie on the block,
no extra comings and goings,
all quiet on the Western Front.
Until today.
That's the short version?
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
So, this is where the
magic happens, huh?
Mm-hmm.
- How's the coffee here?
- Is it any good?
[KNOCKING AT GLASS]
[PHONE RINGING]
How's it going with Lombardi?
[THUD]
He drove over my foot.
We've tried you with four
detectives since Graff left.
Yeah, well, it's hard to
build trust and find a fit.
That's very Goldilocks of you.
This one's too hot,
that one's too cold
Inspector Baptiste has agreed
to a temporary secondment.
Given Detective Darcy's
knowledge of the players,
given that his cover is blown,
and given that you have yet to
land on a permanent partner
He's not even Homicide.
Baptiste says he's an
excellent detective.
The best he's got.
[SIGHS]
Didn't want to loan him out,
but he owes me a favour, so.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[ECHOING GAVEL]
Follow my lead, okay?
No Bobby, no J.R., just
keep it locked tight.
This is really not a good time for me.
Again, Mrs. Cosentino, we
are so sorry for your loss.
This will be quick. Rocco's job
- Roxton Property Management.
- Rocco was the owner.
Mm. It's obvious that he was a
real fixture in the community.
Yeah, well, we've been here for years.
The kids go to Clinton,
and Rocco grew up three blocks away.
Do you have any idea
who might've wanted to
To kill him? No.
No. Um Rocco just got
through a cancer scare,
so he just wanted to spend
some time with his kids.
[FAINT INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Yeah, he was a kind and peaceful man.
Well
Yes. And no.
He has been arrested a number of times.
Simple assault, aggravated assault,
all the assaults, really.
But what I will give you,
Rocco was beloved in the neighbourhood
and he seemed pretty
low-key these days.
No bodyguards, no pitbulls,
fairly average security system.
A little unusual for
a man in his position.
I haven't seen one of
these in a long time.
Mom, babysitter, L.L.
I'm guessing that's you, Luca Loretti?
Here, take this.
G-A-M, who's that, who's GAM?
That's enough, guys. It's time to go.
- You alright?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- Seriously?
- Okay, Mr. Loretti, look
- I wasn't there when it happened,
I don't know who did it.
So, I don't know what
you want me to tell you.
Okay. We could brainstorm?
Bikers? Russians? Vietnamese?
No?
Jamestown, Orton Park, Dixon City?
Then, of course, there's Rocco's asshole
of an older brother, Eddie.
You used to work for
Eddie, if memory serves.
I heard you talking about
him just last week, in fact.
"The only time Eddie
ever gave me a day off
is the day my first kid was born."
Do I know you?
Well, with Eddie out of prison,
he might be interested
in reclaiming the throne.
Throne, I wouldn't know
anything about that.
Hey, what about this GAM person, G-A-M?
Whoever that is called Rocco
30 seconds before he got hit.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
That was Rocco's nickname for Eddie.
Grade A Monster.
What? What are you thinking?
I was just thinking about
how unmemorable you are.
You spent two months
hanging out with that crew,
and that guy had no clue
where he knew you from?
Luca barely comes to the cafe.
And, besides, being
unmemorable was part of my job,
it was literally my job description.
[FOOTSTEPS RECEDING]
[ECHOING GAVEL]
We were sorry to hear
about your brother.
Yeah, it's rough. I loved the guy.
Yeah, no, I'm sure you did.
And I'm sure he felt
the same way about you,
despite the nickname, GAM.
G-A-M, grade A monster.
- [SCOFFS]
- Did something happen
between the two of you recently?
Nah.
No, he's been calling me
that since we were kids.
- Brotherly love, right?
- Mm-hmm.
Still, must've been hard
watching your kid brother
run your empire into the ground.
If you're going to
order a hit on the boss,
your kid brother, then
you'd better be prepared.
Uh You don't know
what you're talking about.
Really?
[KNOCKING]
Glass polycarbonate.
250 times more impact-resistant.
Spall reduction, no glass flying.
That's a good choice if you're paranoid.
I'm not paranoid, Detective, I'm rich.
My security is nothing new.
There's a lot of bad people out there.
Is that why you don't leave your house?
Yeah, something like that.
What about Rocco's visitation?
I hear it's at Vescio's on Dufferin.
That's a busy spot, could
be a tough one to control.
I mean, assuming you're going.
You know, brotherly love, all that jazz.
Well, I appreciate
your concern, Detective.
But I've got it in hand.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
You're in Guns and Gangs.
Who is Eddie hiring
for this kind of job?
Someone from his crew, maybe? Or
I'm Eddie, I'm hiring a pro.
Getting it done, getting him out of town
as soon as humanly possible,
or killing him before
he can brag about it.
I'd do it through a prison contact,
maybe a friend of a friend.
And Eddie's list of known
associates is as long
as his driveway.
Our first all-nighter.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
I remember when Rocco
was nine years old,
this kid was shoving him around.
Wanted his headphones,
or some such nonsense.
Anyway, Rocco was like,
"PJ, please, take my headphones."
[WHINING]
So I step in, I take the headphones,
I hand them to PJ,
and then I break PJ's wrist
and three of his fingers.
Well, that's what you gotta
do with bullies, right?
You gotta hit back.
That's right.
What's happening here? Is that a cop?
[KNOCK AT WINDOW]
[WINDOW WHIRRING]
Hey, this is private property.
- Yeah, we had a complaint.
- What kind of complaint?
- Neighbours heard gunshots.
- Licence and registration?
Ah, come on, he lives here.
[EDDIE]: It's fine. It's
fine, just get it over with.
Argh.
[GRUNTING]
[GUNSHOTS]
- [HIGH-PITCHED FEEDBACK WHINE]
- [CRIES OUT]
Eddie! Eddie!
[ENGINE IDLING]
Two shots to the chest.
[CAMERA CLICKS]
Looks familiar.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Joe Wells?
You were driving, you
wanna tell me what happened?
I can't hear anything.
Someone fired a gun
right beside my head.
You were headed to a visitation
for Rocco Cosentino,
Eddie's little brother.
You must be feeling pretty lucky, Joe.
You know, hits like this, they
don't usually leave a witness.
[SNIFFS]
The glove compartment is open.
Hmm.
What was in there?
Where's the gun, Joe?
I was reaching for my licence, alright?
Which I gave to your
guy who shot my friend.
- Wait, our guy?
- What do you mean our guy?
We're driving, this cop
steps out in front of us
with a flashlight.
We pull over, I go to give him my ID,
he grabs my arm and then,
bam! He starts shooting.
You're saying this was police?
- [GRUNTS AFFIRMATIVELY]
- What did he look like?
- I don't know.
- He had a flashlight in my face.
- Can you try?
- [SIGHS]
White guy, about yea high.
Uh All I could see was the uniform.
Did you notice any name tag
or patch or crest, anything?
Nope.
Uh He was wearing
that stupid hat, though.
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]
You mind playing Joe?
Kinda.
[DOOR SHUTS]
Reach in there for your ID,
give it to me with your right hand.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[CAMERA CLICKS]
[IMITATES GUNSHOTS]
The gun was fired right
beside the right ear.
Shooter was left-handed.
Just like the guy who killed Rocco.
So, both white,
left-handed, both in uniform.
Two brothers, one shooter.
Someone's coming for the Italians.
Two penetrating gunshot wounds
to the anterior left chest,
both directed slightly downward.
Eerily similar to what we
saw with Rocco Cosentino.
Cartoon version: Our
shooter's been doing a f-ton
of target practice, and
he nailed it both times.
You stole my thunder.
Striations on the bullets in both bodies
indicate they came from the same gun.
9mm, semi-automatic,
European-manufactured.
Okay. So we all agree, same shooter.
If it quacks, it's a duck,
and if that duck is picking
off Calabrians one by one,
we could be in for a bloodbath.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Maybe we keep our one-shooter
theory in house for now.
Let it look like what it looks like.
Eddie had Rocco killed,
Rocco's team retaliated.
It's better for us if the mob
is destabilized, on its heels.
It'll give us a minute to get ahead.
[DOOR OPENS]
Mark. What do you got?
Okay, so, I've been working
with Alex from Guns and Gangs.
Hey, thanks for the intro, by the way.
You guys are great.
Is Is he sticking around?
No. No, just this case.
Okay. We've been going
through old wires,
looking for any kind of
chatter indicating Rocco
and Eddie Cosentino were targets.
We've run nicknames, code
names, cell phones on a bunch of
different sources from
the usual suspects,
haven't found anything that
even resembles a hit for hire.
Nothing?
Sri Lankans, triads, Wolfpack?
They might have flown somebody in,
was there any mention of an airport?
I'm not sure this is the
tree we should be barking up.
- Doesn't track.
- Hitman for hire doesn't track?
Hitman, maybe. But
rival organized crime
I mean, it could be revenge,
but the Italians aren't doing
anything vengeance-worthy these days.
Especially under Rocco Smiley-Face.
What's the end game?
Kill the Cosentinos,
take over their hustle?
It doesn't really
work like that anymore.
Okay, so if it's not
a rival gang, then who?
Maybe the call's coming
from inside the house.
Luca Loretti.
Rocco's second-in-command.
He knew them both.
He hated Eddie, thought
Rocco was useless.
And maybe with both of them gone,
Luca had a shot at running the show.
Mr. Loretti.
We understand you're a man of few words,
unlike my colleague here,
who spent the last two months
observing you and your friends
in your natural habitat.
Luca, you're an ambitious guy.
You were frustrated
with Rocco's leadership,
you hated his older brother Eddie,
and you had them both
killed so you could be boss.
- I don't want to be boss.
- [BATEMAN CHUCKLES]
Come on. You'd be better than
either of these two goons.
Hm. But as you both know,
- I'm in the property management business.
- Oh, please! [SLAMMING FOLDER]
She's right, no, you're right. Come on.
I am ambitious, so
What you both clearly don't know
is that I've already taken a
career opportunity in Montreal.
- Montreal?
- Yeah.
I sold my house last
month and I move in a week.
You know, I have the
name of the employer,
if you'd like to give him a
call I have his phone number.
Let me guess, someone
who works for someone
- who works for Johnny Gallo.
- Mm-hmm.
That's a strong lateral move.
Okay, let's say that you weren't
behind this housecleaning.
And let's say you really
are getting out of town.
What's to stop you from
sharing your theory with us?
You knew these brothers
better than anyone.
You grew up together,
you worked with Rocco.
- I loved the guy.
- Mm-hmm?
I did.
Look, was he a good
businessman? No, maybe not.
But Rocco was decent.
And everybody knew that.
Nobody was coming for Rocco.
Okay. What about Eddie?
Eddie. [CHUCKLES]
Eddie was a coked-up,
vengeful, mean son of a bitch.
So, I don't know. Karma.
Why do you say that?
Work? All's fair, right? Whatever.
But Eddie, Eddie was the
guy who would knock around
his girlfriends on the regular.
He beat up delivery guys for fun.
You guys know, you
arrested him for, what?
Getting wasted, running over a waitress,
and then realizing she wasn't dead,
and then running her over again.
That was the straw that broke it.
Yeah, after that
Nobody wanted Eddie
Cosentino around anymore,
everybody hated his guts.
Guy got what he deserved.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
- Eddie Cosentino.
- I heard.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
Oof, yeah, he sounded dreamy.
Figured it was his
brother's crew hitting back.
Yeah, we were thinking
that too for a minute,
but now we're wondering if
Eddie's death is unrelated
- to his line of work.
- Okay, woah, woah.
Two Mafia brothers get
killed within 36 hours,
not related to organized crime?
No, if it was organized crime,
they would've shot his driver.
They wouldn't have left a
witness, it doesn't track.
Detective Darcy,
Guns and Gangs, right?
Yeah, we met on that tow truck case.
See? I can be memorable.
Okay, well, let's say Eddie's
death wasn't gang-related.
I'm sure the guy had a hundred enemies.
How are we going to narrow that down?
Yeah, well, seven arrests over the years
but he only went to prison once.
And apparently it was a
game changer for everyone,
so, Eddie gets shot two
months after he gets out?
Maybe it's not a coincidence.
My colleague worked that case.
Impaired Driving Causing Death.
Drunken hit-and-run, Eddie backed
over a waitress in an alley.
Yeah, twice. Holly
Winter, 19, student at TMU,
worked part-time at Zitto.
Everyone was afraid to
talk, but Crown got lucky.
One kid stepped forward.
He was walking by, saw the whole thing.
Plus we had a sympathetic family.
Single mother, older brother.
They were there every day in court.
We put Eddie Cosentino
away for 12 years.
Right, but he only served four.
This is a mob boss, Theo.
How in the hell does
he get out so early?
The usual.
Phony remorse, good behaviour.
Come on. Frankie, you
know how this works.
Right, but what I'm saying is,
if some drunk prick ran over my kid,
and served one third of his sentence?
I might murder someone.
You think it's family?
Well then why shoot the
brother the day before?
Eddie's been untouchable
since he got out of prison.
Holed up in his bulletproof fortress,
no one was getting near him.
So how do you get him out of his house?
Brother's visitation.
So, is it possible Rocco got killed
simply as a way to flush
Eddie out of his hidey-hole?
I mean, how do you kill a king?
You get him to leave his castle.
It's actually nice to talk about her.
Holly would be 23 this month.
And your son, Patrick, right?
- Yeah.
- How's he doing, Mrs. Winter?
He's, um
He's having a hard time.
Holly and Patrick, they were
I was a single mom, so I worked a lot.
My kids were inseparable.
They never even fought.
They were best friends.
- Where is Patrick now?
- He's not in any of these photos.
Tell me about it. The kid
He's camera-shy, people
shy, not like Holly,
she could light up a whole room.
Hey, love. These folks are
here about Eddie Cosentino.
Yeah, I heard about that on the news.
We didn't even know he was out
of prison for the first month.
The guy who killed your sister
gets out eight years early
and nobody told you?
Nope.
I still don't know how he got out early.
I mean, there was no
debate about what happened.
My sister Holly's taking out
the garbage after her shift.
Eddie Cosentino and his brother Rocco
come out of the restaurant.
Eddie's falling over drunk,
he's pissing on a wall.
His brother's just laughing,
doesn't even try and stop him
from getting in his car.
Two minutes later, Holly's
face down in a puddle
- with her head crushed in.
- [DRAMATIC MUSIC]
An eyewitness laid it
all out in court, so.
This eyewitness, did you ever meet him?
We saw him once in the courtroom
when he gave his testimony,
but we never met him. We tried.
We wanted to thank him for speaking up.
We put in two requests to meet him.
Never heard from anyone,
so we wrote him a note.
Did he write you back?
- Yeah, he did, actually.
- It was really nice.
Do you happen to still have that letter?
- I do.
- Could we take a look, please?
Yeah.
[DRAWER OPENS]
When you saw him in court,
what did he look like?
I don't know, I mean, average.
White guy, brown hair, maybe 5'10".
All I really remember
is he got up on the stand
and he looked at Eddie
Cosentino like he didn't care.
He knew he was doing the right thing.
"Please know that I am safe and well.
Though we've never met, I
think of your family often
and wish you the best."
Look, there's smudging all over
the place, backwards slant
- He's left-handed.
- As is our suspect.
It's circumstantial at best.
So why would an eyewitness
to a violent crime
come out of the
woodwork four years later
to go after the guy he put away?
Well, maybe he thought
he'd never be safe
with Eddie out on the
street. These mob guys,
they know how to hold a grudge.
So it's kill or be killed?
I mean, it's possible.
[CAR DOOR SHUTS]
I'm also kind of
interested in the woodwork.
You're thinking Witness Protection?
- It's possible.
- Huh.
This guy's entire life got vaporized
for doing the right thing.
Four years alone,
banished, in the wilderness?
That's a lot of time to
get even more paranoid,
polish your resentments.
Yeah. It's a hell of a lot
of time for target practice.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[ECHOING GAVEL]
I don't like getting calls from Crowns.
Okay, well, I don't like
asking favours from Crowns,
Brenda, but here we are.
Listen to me.
Eddie and Rocco Cosentino
were both killed by a man
matching your witness's description.
All the evidence is sealed.
Brenda We've tried all
other avenues to find this guy.
We even reached out
to the uniform assigned
to the witness during the
trial, Constable Mike Kavinda,
we haven't heard anything.
But hey, if you can
assure us that your client
is alive and well and living
peacefully in Barrie
Come with me.
Barrie? Why'd you mention Barrie?
They always seem to stick
these poor bastards in Barrie.
Ayodele, these detectives
are looking for Tom B.
Go ahead.
I've been trying to reach our
witness for the last two days.
Since Eddie Cosentino got shot.
But he hasn't gotten back to me.
- Is that unusual?
- Yes. Very.
Okay, we need to find this
guy. Can you give me a name?
Tom Burney.
I can't say his real last name.
I've been his handler since the trial.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[FILE CABINET OPENS AND SHUTS]
We relocated him to
Barrie four years ago.
He's a carpenter, goes fishing,
hunting once in a while, lives alone.
Lovely guy. Quiet.
Very cautious, for obvious reasons.
Eddie Cosentino was released from prison
eight years early. Was Tom aware?
Yes. I told him two months ago.
As soon as it happened.
He was upset, but he
seemed to accept it.
When did you last see him?
I brought him his mail last week.
One letter. It came to my office.
Not sure who it was from,
there were just initials
scrawled on the back.
Do you remember what they were?
- MK.
- Mike Kavinda.
Tom read the letter.
He didn't say anything, I'm sure
he destroyed it, it's protocol.
Ayodele, in your heart of hearts,
do you think Tom would
risk coming back to Toronto?
No.
Not in a million years.
Eddie Cosentino might've been
behaving himself in prison
in order to get parole,
but we all knew the minute he
got out, he was coming for Tom.
You know what I miss the most?
Besides my wife, of
course, God rest her soul.
I don't know, Leo,
what do you miss, huh?
- [PHONE RINGING]
- Sunsets?
Cannoli? Walks in the rain?
Hey, what's going on?
What? I can't believe they got to Eddie.
- [MACHINE BEEPING RAPIDLY]
- [GRUNTING]
Oh, man. They're gonna
be sorry they hit us back!
Out of the way, sir!
Code blue!
Okay. Yeah. I'll be right there.
- [NICOLA]: Eleanor.
- [DOCTOR]: She's having a seizure.
Let's get her down flat.
- [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[MUSIC INTENSIFIES]
Mike Kavinda.
[KAVINDA]: Can I help you, Detectives?
MK, is that you?
- Those are my initials.
- Alright, Tom Burney.
Ring a bell?
Eddie Cosentino case,
you were in charge of the eyewitness,
you spent six months protecting Tom?
An innocent man, doing the right thing
at great personal cost,
how could I forget?
Alright, so you You stay in touch?
Write him a letter now and then?
You sign it with your initials, MK?
Don't know what you're talking about.
Okay.
Oh, did you know your boy
Tom just shot and killed
Eddie Cosentino?
Yeah. He dressed like
a cop to do it, too.
You write Tom a letter, one week later,
he's back in town playing
dress-up, shooting gangsters,
might be time to tell
us what's going on.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Two weeks ago, there was
a mugging over on Dundas.
Eleanor Fraser. 64.
Lived in the area her whole life.
She was walking home from work.
Some guy beat her half to
death with a steel pipe.
Not sure she's going to make it.
Does Eleanor Fraser, by any
chance, have a 31-year-old son?
Left-handed? 5'10"? Named Tom?
So that's what was in the letter?
"Oh, hey Tom. Eddie Cosentino
just about killed your mother.
Don't stick your head out
or they'll shoot it off,
it's a trap, that's what they want."
Jesus! What the hell were you thinking?
- I'm sorry.
- Okay, okay, okay.
Eleanor Fraser, where is she?
Midtown Memorial.
Third floor.
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
- [PHONE RINGING]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
You're too late, she's already gone.
She headed down for surgery a
couple hours ago. Who are you?
Just dropping these off.
Leo, can you give me a couple minutes?
Then I can take you down for the scans.
I can take him.
As long as you take
me for a decent coffee.
New friend said he'd take
me, but he hasn't been back.
It's fine by me, just stay
with him, bring him back?
For sure. I got time to kill.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
We're looking for Eleanor Fraser.
- What's this about?
- Can I help you?
Eleanor Fraser, we hear
she's on this floor.
She is. She's in surgery right now.
- Surgery for what?
- Decompressive craniotomy.
- Should be out in about 20.
- Any visitors lately?
An orderly. Came by and
dropped off some flowers.
This orderly, what did they look like?
- I don't know.
- Long hair, about yea high?
Yeah. Yeah, new guy,
never seen him before.
You'll probably find him in the lobby.
- [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[MUSIC INTENSIFIES]
It's Detective Bateman,
we need backup immediately.
Midtown Memorial Hospital,
we're in the atrium.
[PANTING]
- Police!
- Woah!
- Ma'am, are you alone?
- Yes.
Did anyone else come into this room?
No.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC BUILDS]
Gun down! Down! Put it, put it down.
- Yep, okay.
- Put it down.
- Okay.
- You too, put it down.
- Sorry, I'm not doing it.
- Put it down!
We're new at this, me and
her, okay? At working together?
I'm not putting my gun down.
You'd be doing me a really
big favour if you let her go.
You might even make me look good.
I'll do anything to
impress Bateman here.
Even if that means shooting you dead.
You're a good shot, but
I promise you, I'm better.
- Please just put it down.
- [BATEMAN GROANS IN DISCOMFORT]
You think I want to be here
doing this right now? I do not.
And the thing is, neither do you.
You know how I know that?
Because you're not the bad guy.
You gave up your entire life
to put a monster in prison.
Eddie Cosentino got put away
because you were brave enough
to speak up.
And the thing is, you didn't need to.
You're from the neighbourhood,
you knew who Eddie he was,
you could've walked. Forgotten.
Mixed things up, made sure they
didn't put you on the stand.
Why'd you do it?
I want to know.
Was it because of your
mom? She teach you that?
[SIGHS]
"Whoever knows the right
thing to do and fails to do it,
for him it is sin."
Okay.
Book of James.
I like the New Testament,
it's a nice break
from all that fire and brimstone.
So she taught you well.
Do the right thing, you can't go wrong.
Except it did.
Yeah, it did.
But you were just a kid. Someone's son.
Who became a ghost.
Until you found out your mom got
beaten half to death with a pipe.
[SOBS]
Is my mom going to die?
We don't know.
You need to see your mom,
that's why you killed Rocco, yeah?
Yes.
And Eddie?
Yes.
I hated him.
Okay. So, you did what
you needed to do, right?
You got your vengeance.
- I didn't get anything.
- What do you mean?
Because I still hate him!
And I I can't get this out of me.
It's a terrible feeling. Hatred.
It grips onto you and
it won't let you go,
it corrodes you, but
it's just a feeling.
Tom.
It's human.
We're only human.
But now you've got to make a choice.
Tom, please.
Put the gun down and let her go.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
I didn't even get to say thank you.
I just left and I didn't
even tell her that I love her.
Okay. So let's fix that.
Let's go see her now. She
should be out of surgery, okay?
We'll go see her.
Tom, put it down, we'll go see her,
before the cavalry
arrives, let's do it now.
Tom, on my life, that's what
we'll do. Right now. Okay?
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[WHIMPERS SOFTLY]
Put your hands up.
Alright, hands on your head.
[CUFFS CLINKING]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
[INDISTINCT PA ANNOUNCEMENT]
[SOFT MUSIC]
[MACHINES WHIRRING AND BEEPING]
[CUFFS CLINKING]
[SOMBRE MUSIC]
[SHUDDERING BREATH]
[CRYING]
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]
You talk a lot.
I know.
Good.
