SkyMed (2022) s04e02 Episode Script

Team Building

1
[HAYLEY] Even with the new hires,
it's still always gonna be SkyMed.
I'll do compressions.
You do jaw thrusts.
- I'm sorry, who are you?
- Zay.
[CRYSTAL] He's skilled, but he's not
- here for the right reasons.
- [LEXI] Wheezer's trusting
me to be a training captain.
Maya Chang,
I don't know what
squadron you came from,
but in mine, we respected the uniform.
[STEF] Must have gone
on autopilot for a minute there.
Wow. What is with this brain fog?
But my life isn't exactly
normal right now, cowboy,
and I can't get distracted.
My parents died, brother's only 15,
so it's just the two of us now.
[HAYLEY] My boyfriend
has an ex-fiancée
I didn't know about,
and I can't hire enough medics
to keep the planes in the air.
[CRYSTAL] The Jeremy Wood Clinic?
And we want you to run it.
[CRYSTAL] I, I'd have to leave SkyMed.
[HAYLEY] Piper? Wyatt?
He's lucky you found him when you did.
[HAYLEY] Wheezer,
you used to be engaged.
Hayley, I used to be married.
Why does being engaged
before that matter?
Because I knew about the marriage.
This is the first time
I'm hearing about Riley.
Yeah, because it's ancient history.
We were 19, we were in flight school,
and I had no idea that she
was going to be
the Aviation Management Group
rep coming up here.
Well, what happened with you two?
- Why didn't it work out?
- Look, we
We got different opportunities
out of school.
We went our separate ways.
We were young.
But we haven't seen
each other in years.
And if I'd known
she was coming up here,
believe me, I would have warned you.
Well, is there anyone else
from your past
you'd like to inform me of?
Any other ex-fiancées
or wives or former pets?
I promise, I have no
skeletons in my closet.
I got nothing up my sleeve,
but you might want to check
just in case. You know what?
You might want to check
the whole flight suit, actually.
Wheezer, I don't want Riley
to know we're together.
I'm chief nurse. And if I have
to ask for more money,
for more staff, I want to be
seen as professional,
not management's ex-boyfriend's
new girlfriend.
You got it. I'm gonna
keep it totally profesh.
Maybe I can get a sexy little
handshake or something, though?
Okay, you can have a little kiss.
- A little one?
- [RILEY] What a day to fly!
Clear skies, low winds.
I can see why you stayed
out here so long, Opie.
Hi, Riley. Have you met
SkyMed's chief nurse?
- This is Hayley Roberts.
- Hi, nice to meet you.
Um, look, I'm sure you've got
lots to get up to speed on,
but when you have a minute,
I'd love to talk about staff.
I'm all yours.
Where are we headed first?
You don't mind having an FO
with more pick time
- than you do, you Opie?
- I don't know if you got
more time than me, Riley?
All right, sorry.
I meant more type ratings.
Let's kick the tires
and light the fires.
[WHEEZER SIGHS]
[THEME MUSIC]
[PLANE ROARS PAST]
Damn, kid. You walk into a propeller?
I'd hate to see the other guy.
[EMBARRASSED CHUCKLED]
Yeah, never wear your
flight bag cross-body.
Patient slipped and grabbed it.
Nearly yanked to me off my feet.
Hey, Crystal, have you been
to the hospital yet?
How's Wyatt?
Oh, I didn't know you two were close.
Some medics just actually
care about their patients,
you know, like human beings?
D-did he say anything
about the accident?
Yeah, it'd be great
if they could catch
the asshole who hit him.
[SHARP EXHALE]
The police took his statement.
He didn't really have many details,
but I can go ask him again today.
No. No, don't stress him out.
Just wanted to make sure he was okay.
Okay.
Listen, I think we got off
on the wrong foot,
but it looks like
we're gonna be working together,
so maybe we can start over.
If it was up to me,
we wouldn't be working together.
Oh, come on. I'm a good nurse.
With a bad attitude.
You don't care about your patients,
and if you don't care,
you shouldn't be up here.
I know my stuff.
Does it matter if I know the patient's
favorite color, too? [SCOFFS]
You think it's fun to come up
where there's no resources,
no supervision,
and you can just do whatever you want?
- These are people!
- It's not a joke to me.
I take this very seriously.
Then act like it.
[DOOR OPENS]
[RILEY] Wow, it's smaller
than I remember.
I guess jets,
you get used to bigger cockpits.
No, it's not flashy,
but it gets the job done.
None of my patients ever complain.
None of "our" patients.
And it's a great plane.
Captain Heaseman said you went
to flight school together.
Where have you been flying since then?
Kind of everywhere.
Flew the 777 in Japan.
Then I came back to North America
to fly the 737, 757, 787.
- Wow, all the sevens, huh?
- Yeah.
What about you, Opie? What have you
been up to the last 20 years?
Ah, well, this.
Yeah, but, uh,
but between air ambulances,
passenger flights, and cargo,
I oversee ten planes and 60 crew.
I'm actually taking the staff
survival training this weekend.
It's a safety initiative I created.
"We're" taking the staff
to do team building.
We agreed to expand the training.
Yeah, well, we
we talked about that.
I didn't think we decided yet.
I thought we did decide?
I thought we agreed
team building is essential
for everyone to work together
every day,
not just in emergencies?
Look, survival training is my program.
It's an aviation program.
And we have a lot
of new crew coming in
who need to get comfortable
with each other and build trust.
This is about safety. It's not about
- making friends, Hayley.
- [RILEY LAUGHS]
Classic Opie,
always thinking
of the worst-case scenario.
- Why do you call him Opie?
- It's an aviation saying.
There are old pilots.
There are bold pilots.
There are no old, bold pilots.
He's never been much of a risk-taker.
- That is not true.
- That's why we broke up.
I got offered the job in Japan
right out of flight school,
and I wanted Opie to come,
but he thought it was
too big of a risk.
I'm not risk-averse.
I just like knowing
that I'm taking a smart risk.
That's Opie.
Always gotta do things his way.
But he's the kind of guy
that I didn't know enough
to appreciate when I was 20.
Sometimes you don't know what
you had until you're older.
Look, I know it hurts,
but I need to have a look, okay, Reg?
- [CLOTH SQUELCHES]
- Whoa, okay, whoa, whoa!
I think I saw inside his head.
That hole goes inside his head, right?
- Ow!
- Yes, that would be
the internal auditory canal.
You always did have a delicate tummy.
The gentleman is missing an ear.
Probably tore it off
with that stupid fishing line.
It was an accident.
I didn't know he was standing
right behind me
when I cast the line,
and I didn't know it got
caught on his ear.
What, did you think I was
screaming just for kicks?
I thought you was excited
about the fishing derby.
- Paul, you idiot!
- Okay, everyone
try to remain calm, okay?
The good news is,
ears can be reattached.
And luckily, we have a pretty
good idea where your ear is.
No. No, this is a prize-winning fish.
If we don't get Reg
and the fish to the hospital
before the ear degrades, they
won't be able to reattach it.
But they judge by weight.
If you take it now,
no one will believe me.
It's my fish. I caught him.
Yeah, with my ear.
Okay, well, what if we can
document how big the fish
is before we take it?
I don't have a scale,
but I do have this. We
use it to measure babies.
It uses height to indicate
the corresponding weight.
For babies? This is a fish.
Well, look, Hayley is a professional.
The judges will take her assessment.
Plus, it's not really a winning fish
if your partner loses an ear, right?
- [SCREAMING]
- Ow! Ow!
Okay.
Ugh, oh God.
Uh, okay, can you hold
that there? Thank you.
[GAGGING]
[TAPE MEASURE CLICKING]
Okay, one, two, three, cheese.
Yeah, okay, there you go.
See, not squeamish at all.
- Very manly.
- Mm-hmm.
You handled that really well.
A true leader.
Nah, that was all Hayley.
[WHEEZER] You know, Riley was right,
I do like things my way.
But you were right, too.
We're a team, and we agreed
to make all the decisions
for SkyMed together, so
yeah, we can work a little
team building
into survival training.
We can work some survival
training into team building.
Great.
Wow. You have a flexible HR policy.
Yeah, we uh, we were
trying to keep this quiet.
You don't need to keep your love life
- a secret from me, Opie.
- Oh, it was me.
Um, I wanted to be professional.
But we've been together for a while,
and it does not interfere
with our work.
Totally. It makes us stronger
being able to collaborate
so intimately.
No, I just, I mean that having
a romantic relationship
means that we know how
to work hand in glove.
[STAMMERS]
Look, I just mean that dating
allows us to keep a finger
in each other's pie.
- Please help me.
- Uh, so we decided
to switch up survival team weekend.
- You should come along.
- It sounds really fun,
but I have to be back
on the West Coast on Monday.
Actually, I was hoping we could
go over aviation operations.
There's some pretty big
losses and costs.
I want to understand
where they're coming from.
[EXHALES]
Whatever you need,
I'll get maintenance control
pulling records.
Well, I feel like a jerk
telling you what a catch
your boyfriend is.
No, I'm the jerk
for keeping it a secret.
I just wanted to be taken
seriously as the chief nurse.
And I have to ask for funding
for more medical staff,
and I didn't want to be seen
as Wheezer's girlfriend.
Absolutely. Let's talk Monday
before I leave. Sound good?
- That's great. Thank you.
- Okay.
[SOFT MUSIC]
[CRYSTAL] Okay, pupil response
looks good.
Can you follow my finger?
[CRYSTAL] Okay,
that looks good. Very good.
It was you.
[BREATHES SHAKILY]
- Wyatt, I
- You're the one who saved me.
You're lucky Piper found you
and brought you to the ER so fast.
Your injuries were minor,
all things considered,
a little whiplash, some bruised ribs,
and a mild concussion.
So, he's gonna be okay?
He can take those flowers to go.
Just make sure you take it easy.
But it's SkyMed survival
training this weekend?
Oh, I can write you a note.
Wheezer's gonna understand.
No. No, no, no, I-I need to go.
I already screwed up my first
week getting hit by a car.
I need to go to survival training
to prove I was worth hiring.
Okay, normally, I don't advise camping
right after an injury,
but your scans were clear.
Just don't push it
and let us know if you're
struggling, okay?
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- [CHUCKLING]
- I'm glad you're okay.
Yeah. Yeah, I do got
a sharp pain right here.
Your vitals look okay.
You want me to call Crystal back?
[DEEP EXHALE THEN CHUCKLES]
You saved my life, Piper.
And how am I ever going
to impress you now?
The only thing that matters
now is that you're okay.
Don't worry about anything else.
[FEMALE VOICEMAIL]
Leave a message, loser.
Happy birthday!
You'll never guess where I am.
I
am in the right seat of a King Air.
Your girl's an FO, baby! [GIGGLES]
Oh, God, I wish you could see this.
I wish we could talk.
Especially today.
Anyway,
just wanted to hear your voice.
Happy birthday, gorgeous.
[SOFT PENSIVE MUSIC]
[SIGHS]
- You're early.
- Yeah,
just wanted to practice my flows.
First day as FO, want to get it right.
And when I went flight line,
my buddy Nowak and I
would eat lunch in here together
so I could do the same thing.
- Sounds like a good friend.
- The best.
You took kind of a big break
in between
getting your private license at cadets
and going for your commercial,
like five years?
Yeah, just sometimes you have
to go down the wrong path
- before you find the right one.
- Hmm.
But I've wanted to fly
ever since I sat in a glider.
It was a glider for me, too.
It's the freedom, right?
The tow rope falls away,
your stomach drops,
and it's just you and the big sky.
- Yep.
- [STEF] Good morning!
Who wants coffee?
- [MAYA] Oh!
- [STEF] Lex, I got your uzh,
but Maya, I don't know
how you take it,
so there's black, light,
and sweet, or tea.
- Thank you.
- You are in a good mood.
Oh, I got sleep.
A whole eight hours of it.
And I'm not working any more doubles
since Piper and Zay, started.
Today's gonna be a good day.
I can feel it.
[AIRPLANE ROARS]
[GEORGE] My sutures really hurt.
Let me have a look, okay, George?
[GRUNTING]
[BLOOD SPURTING]
[TENSE MUSIC]
- Why is there so much blood?!
- You have a bleed,
but I'm pushing fluids.
We need to divert back to Thompson.
Tell dispatch I need fluids
and an ambulance standing by.
45-year-old man, heavy bleeding
post-abdominal surgery.
[EERIE UNSETTLING MUSIC]
[HEART BEAT THUMPING]
[BREATHES SHAKILY]
[HIGH-PITCHED RINGING]
[WATER RUSHING]
- [STEADYING EXHALE]
- Get it together, Stef.
- Finn?
- Hey, Piper.
- What are you doing here?
- It's cool. I work here now.
What do you mean you work here now?
Relax. I'm just doing part-time.
And I'm not doing anything dangerous.
And basketball hasn't even
started yet so
Finn, I thought we agreed you lay low
until school started?
That was before your car accident.
Have you
told anyone here about that?
No, why? You hit a deer.
Is that a crime or something?
Look, I just want to help, Piper.
And I know you can't afford
to get the car fixed.
Finn, you need to run
these things by me.
Can I keep the job?
[DEEP INHALE AND EXHALE]
But let's keep the car thing
between you and me, okay?
Okay.
Come on.
[WHEEZER] Well, that looks fancy.
Jeremy Wood Clinic.
Is this, is this happening?
It's a proposal.
I'm helping the community
with final touches.
Oh, that is great, Crissy.
Jer would be so proud.
It is great. And if we get funding,
they want me to run it,
but they want to have it
up and running by this spring.
What? That that's fast.
Have you told Hayley?
[SIGHS]
I'm worried she'll be upset
I'm leaving SkyMed.
She's your best friend.
She's going to be happy for you.
But I wouldn't sit on it for too long
because she's already having
a hard time with staffing.
A little fancy for the bush, no?
Oh, yeah. I got to go
through operations
with Riley this weekend.
So, Hayley's running
the team survival training without me.
I thought we agreed to
call it survival team building?
I'm late. Have an adventure for me.
Mwah, will do.
And how do you feel about
Wheezer spending the weekend
with his ex-fiancée?
I trust Wheezer.
Okay, Riley did still seem into him,
but she knows we're together, so
Pilots come and go,
but nurse besties are forever, right?
Right.
[HAYLEY] Welcome to SkyMed
Survival Training
Team Building Weekend.
[ALL WHOOP]
Now, you all have
the coordinates to an airstrip.
The goal for this weekend
is to use our skills
to navigate to that airstrip
where Wheezer will pick us up.
But along the way,
we'll face challenges
that'll help us work together
as a team.
But the most
important part of our job
- our patients.
- [ALL LAUGH]
Your goal is to keep
Captain Wheezer alive
until we reach the airstrip.
Wow, she got the epaulets
on there and everything.
Now, take a look around.
This may look like a normal clearing
with logs and rocks,
but when we are transporting
a sick patient,
it can be a minefield, okay?
So, it is crucial that we communicate
and act together
to navigate it safely.
Now, to practice that
the person at the front
of the backboard
- will be blindfolded.
- Oh!
- Okay!
- The person at the back,
it is your job to give directions
to get the patient across safely.
Pilots, you're up first,
Maya and Wyatt. Let's go!
- Yep.
- Let's go!
[WYATT] Come on, let's do this!
[WHISTLES]
Oh, I don't feel comfortable
being blindfolded.
- I'll take the back.
- Oh, no, no, no,
I just had a head injury,
so I can't risk falling,
and most of the weight's
at the patients head,
so I think the stronger person
should be at the back.
I am strong.
Also, if you were just injured,
shouldn't you take less weight?
Just walk where I tell ya, okay?
[HAYLEY] All right,
hurry up, guys. Let's go.
[SIGHS]
Hey, can I ask your
professional opinion?
- Mm-hmm.
- I had a patient the other day
with weird symptoms.
She was, she had this brain fog
that she couldn't shake.
And she's tired all the time,
but she can't sleep.
And then she started, like,
dissociating, like,
feeling outside of her own body.
It could be an undiagnosed
mental illness,
brain tumor, an infection.
But your patient will definitely
need an MRI to confirm.
Sounds kinda serious.
Could be. It's a good thing
your patient's getting help.
Yeah.
[WYATT] Whoa, wait. Hey, just hold on.
Slow down. You need to veer left.
I can't slow down. You're pushing me.
And do you mean turn left
or straight and then left?
No, I mean veer left. You're drifting.
What does veer left mean?
Can't you just say turn?
Ah! Gah!
You, you walked me into a tree, bro.
- Me?
- Yeah!
You're weren't following
my directions!
- Maybe give better directions!
- [LEXI] Hey!
Come on, pilots. We're a team here.
This is a great example
of why communication
and trust are key, you guys, okay?
[HAYLEY] Crystal and Zay, you're up.
We have to get the patient
over the hill
to get to the airstrip.
And just like on a real call,
these are the tools
you have to work with.
[QUIRKY TENSE MUSIC]
So, you want to discuss
a plan or maybe
I'll sling a pulley around that tree.
You tie it to the litter.
I'll pull, you push.
Great.
[GRUNTS]
[ZAY] This is team building, you know.
We're supposed to work together.
I do actually know some stuff.
We know. You won't stop showing off.
Maybe you just don't like
that there's finally
someone else up here as smart as you.
Is that why you keep hanging
around SkyMed,
to be the smart one?
Or are you just worried
that the world won't turn
if Dr. Crystal Highway
isn't spinning it?
[CRYSTAL GRUNTS] Ah!
[ROPE ZIPPING]
Ah!
- Look out!
- Move! Move!
[LOUD CRASH]
[GASPS]
Well, he did have epaulets.
Okay
obviously some things to work on.
Nice one, Doctor.
[HAYLEY] Come on, team.
Let's hike to the next challenge.
[TENSE QUIRKY MUSIC]
Piper, hey, Piper,
want me to carry that? Seems heavy.
You're supposed to be taking it easy.
Come on, Piper. How else am
I going to thank you
for saving my life?
Besides, I gotta prove myself
after that challenge with Maya,
when I didn't exactly click.
Maybe you and I can partner up
on the next one?
Sorry. I think pilots
are supposed to be with pilots,
and medics stick with medics.
What's the deal with you two?
She was pretty upset
after your accident.
She was?
Still don't remember anything
about that car that hit you?
No, I remember opening
my eyes and Piper being there.
Maybe be careful with her.
What about you and Crystal?
Yeah, well, the thing
about that is, she hates me.
I usually don't have to work
this hard to impress people.
Most girls are pretty impressed
before they even meet me.
Well, I've never had that problem,
but if whatever you're doing
isn't impressing her,
then why don't you try
figuring out what she thinks
is impressive and doing that instead?
You're a good guy, Wy. You know that?
[GENTLE MUSIC]
[BIRDS CHIRPING]
[HAYLEY] Welcome to your
next team challenge.
This is the most direct path
to the airstrip.
If we don't cross here,
it adds six hours to the hike.
- Oh.
- Pilots,
these are the supplies
you have to build your raft.
And medics, let's secure the patient
and our medical gear.
All right, let's go, guys!
I'm sorry. Dropping Dummy Wheezer
down a hill didn't exactly
help team spirit.
Hey, that's okay. I set up a campsite
on the other side
with food and marshmallows
and a projector so we can have
a movie night under the stars.
Something my mom would always do
when our family went camping.
Sure, you and Zay aren't
getting along quite yet,
but you're going to be at SkyMed
until you finish your residency,
so you'll have lots
of time to figure it out.
Plus, the planes are small,
so it's not like
you can stay enemies forever.
I have to tell you something.
[MAYA] Stop! It isn't ready yet!
You can't put it in the water.
[WYATT] I'm not putting it in
the water.
I'm just getting it closer.
By the way, these ropes are too loose.
I think you gotta
tighten them up, hey?
Okay, this isn't
the blindfold challenge.
You don't get to give me orders.
We're supposed to be a team, right?
I grew up on a ranch, okay?
I know how to rig all this stuff.
I think I should be the lead here.
Yeah, I was a cadet. I built rafts.
You don't get to take control.
Okay, hang on.
We need to make sure
the patient's secure.
Relax, it's fine.
I told you it's not ready!
- [GRUNTS]
- Hold on, just wait.
You're supposed to work
together! Guys, please!
Come on, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
Oh, Wyatt!
- Oh, my
- Oh!
[GROUP SHOUTING]
You just lost your chief pilot!
You guys!
Oh, my God. All you had
to do was work together!
Without the raft, we have
to walk around the river.
It's a six-hour hike to our campsite.
Yeah, looks like
we're sleeping here tonight.
That's smart.
Mixing cattails with birch bark.
Gotta get at least
one thing right today, right?
Earlier with Wyatt [SIGHS]
I get he was being a jerk,
but you kinda lost control.
I just I have a hard time
with people like that.
And I know, former cadet,
you'd think I'd be
used to getting ordered around, but
Depends on who's doing the ordering?
Yeah.
You're a first officer now, Maya.
You can't lose control.
Just makes the other person
look like they're right,
even when they aren't.
My sister used to say that, too.
Yesterday was her birthday.
They say milestones are hardest
the first year
after someone dies, but
the second year
hasn't been any easier.
I'm sorry. Were you two close?
We grew apart the last couple years.
I just really miss her.
She's my best friend.
That must be really tough.
I've really been missing Nowak
since he left.
So what happened?
Why'd you two grow apart?
I think I disappointed her.
But I don't want to
disappoint you, Captain Martine.
My dad always says,
"When you sit five inches apart,
your copilot is your closest friend."
So it's just Lexi, okay?
Okay, show me what you got, cadet.
[ZAY] Hey, Piper.
- Hey.
- How's that bruise doing?
- [CHUCKLES]
- It's fine. It's just a bruise.
It's funny how much it looks
like a seatbelt bruise.
And didn't your brother say that
you needed money to fix the car?
Yeah, I don't know what
you're talking about, Zay.
What happened, Piper?
You hit something? Or someone?
You just happened to show up
the moment someone hit Wyatt
and took off.
He's a good guy, Piper.
And he likes you, but he
deserves to know the truth.
I was gonna tell everyone,
but they all just assumed
someone else hit him.
Yeah, and you didn't
bother to correct them?
It's just me and my brother
since my parents died.
He's still a minor.
If I get in trouble,
I can lose custody. He's already
lost his parents, Zay.
Look, I'm sorry about your brother,
but Wyatt doesn't deserve this.
Please, I will tell him. I will.
[STAMMERS] I'll tell him.
Just give me a chance
to make it right, okay?
It should come from me.
Okay.
But if you don't tell him, I will.
[BREATHES SHAKILY]
You okay?
I just had this vision for tonight.
If I made everything perfect,
then we would all be
A family?
Yeah.
Maybe Wheezer was right. Maybe
Maybe SkyMed will never be
a family again.
At least I have you and Wheezer.
You're my family.
Hayley,
the community is raising funds
to open a medical clinic.
The Jeremy Wood Clinic.
Oh my God, Crystal, that's amazing.
And if they get the funding,
they want me to run it
in the spring.
[SOFT MUSIC]
This is important for North House.
And it's important for me.
And look, I-I know
you're short-staffed.
I don't want to leave, but we
we still have a few months.
No, this is this is huge.
And you worked so, so hard, Crys.
- You deserve this.
- We could help a lot of people.
It's just happening
a lot sooner than I thought.
And I can't help worrying.
I mean, maybe the right thing's
happening at the wrong time.
No. No. This is the right thing
at the right time.
And I'm so proud of you.
[CHUCKLING SOFTLY] Come here.
[TENDER MUSIC]
[LOON HOOTS IN DISTANCE]
[FOLIAGE CRUNCHING]
Watching the stars?
Trying to figure out
a way to apologize to Maya.
I'm just trying to prove
I deserve to be here, you know?
Especially after my accident.
Wyatt, I need to tell you something.
What is it?
The night of your accident,
the car that hit you, it
Piper, look.
Are those fireflies?
Yeah.
Fireflies are good luck.
We used to get them
on the ranch all the time
when I was a kid.
You know, I haven't seen
any since Briscoe died.
Briscoe Bowler,
he was a racehorse. Yeah.
Sweet boy would do
anything for a snuggle.
[PIPER CHUCKLES SOFTLY]
But one weekend when
my parents were out of town,
Briscoe broke his leg. And, um
I had to be the one
to make the decision to
[SNIFFLES]
I've had bad luck ever since.
[SNIFFLES]
I met Finley at the hangar today.
He told me about
your parents. I'm sorry.
Yeah, I kinda liked you not knowing.
It was nice pretending to be
a normal 24-year-old
with normal 24-year-old problems.
[SOFT MUSIC]
- [SIGHS]
- I have such a headache.
Hey, let me, let take a look.
[SIGHS]
[MUSIC BECOMES TENDER]
You look good to me.
Do I?
[RILEY] So, let me get this straight,
in the last year, you had to repair
a snapped cable that jammed
the elevator on SkyMed 922,
a plane which later blew up
and still needs to be replaced.
And then a patient tried to steal 911.
And two days ago,
there was an oil cap mishap
on 933 that nearly torched the engine?
Well, when you put it like that
When you put it like that,
I am surprised
you've kept this base running at all,
let alone as efficiently as you have.
- Really?
- I wasn't kidding
when I said that you are worth
appreciating, Opie.
You are a damn good chief pilot.
In fact, I think it might be
time for an upgrade.
We still need to replace 922,
so how would you feel
about adding a Learjet to your fleet?
There's one for sale in Winnipeg.
Can SkyMed afford that?
We would have to institute
a hiring freeze
for the rest of the year,
but a faster plane would allow
SkyMed to service
a bigger area
with more critical patients.
This is exactly what SkyMed
Manitoba needs to grow, Opie.
- [SIGHS]
- Yeah, but a new aircraft
means added training, exclusive parts.
We'd have to fly into different
airstrips in some cases.
Oh, come on, Opie this is bold
pilot stuff. Take a risk!
Do you know how many chief pilots
would kill to have their AMG
offering them
a newer, better plane?
I do take risks when they're smart.
[CHUCKLES] So, I guess, um
Yeah, SkyMed's getting a Learjet.
Okay, there you go, Opie,
making bold moves. I'm proud of you.
Hey, I take risks, Ri.
Look, you remember when
we borrowed your dad's 152?
We flew to that concert
in Montreal. You remember that?
- I remember.
- Mm-hmm.
You were terrified to enter
controlled airspace at YUL,
and then when you tried
to refuel after the show,
the ground crew yelled at you
in French.
- [CHUCKLES]
- Yeah, they wouldn't let us
refuel 'til 0600 when they
reopened, right? Yeah. Mm-hmm.
We had to sleep in my dad's plane
'cause we spent all of our money
on the tickets.
Yeah.
Whoa.
Riley, I
Ooh. I, uh
I read that wrong, didn't I?
It's just Hayley and I,
we're, we're serious.
It's, um
something special.
Well, I hope she's smarter than I was.
I hope she knows to appreciate you.
She does. And I appreciate her, too.
Yeah. [CLEARS THROAT]
So, um, 933,
what exactly happened to the oil cap?
[GENTLE MUSIC]
[BIRDS CHIRPING]
[INHALES AND EXHALES DEEPLY]
Good morning, sunshine.
You know, maybe getting hit
by that car
was actually good luck if
it means waking up next to you.
[CHUCKLES]
Wyatt,
I need to tell you something.
There's something
that you need to know.
What is it?
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
- Help! Just don't move. Help!
- What are you
I need help over here! Bring the gear!
What do you mean? What's wrong?
Just don't get up. Don't get up, okay?
Just, just stay there.
He's he's got a blown pupil.
He was complaining about
headaches yesterday.
[HAYLEY] Is Wyatt okay?
What's going on?
Could be a bleed
from getting hit by the car.
I thought his CT was clear?
It must have been a slow bleed.
We need to get him to a hospital.
Okay, I'll call Wheezer.
But it's at least
a six-hour hike to the airstrip
if we don't get across that river.
Wyatt, can you stand?
Yeah, I think so.
[DAZED GRUNT]
Okay, no, we don't have six hours.
Okay, everyone, listen up.
This isn't training anymore.
One of our own is hurt, and at SkyMed,
we take care of our own.
So, we're gonna set aside
all the bullshit
and we're gonna get Wyatt
across the river
and out of here, stat. Is that clear?
- [ALL] Clear!
- Let's go.
[GRIPPING MUSIC]
Thanks for letting me know. Great.
Hey, I heard what happened.
How's Wyatt?
Crystal said his CT found
a slow cerebrospinal fluid leak.
That can cause a blown pupil.
But it's much less severe
than a bleed.
So, they're going to drain it
- and he should be okay.
- She'll keep us posted?
Ugh, team building definitely
didn't go how I was hoping.
- Hmm.
- Crystal tell you
she's leaving?
Yeah.
You were right, SkyMed isn't the same.
I really thought that I could
just make everyone
like each other. Like, I could
Like, I could just make us a family.
But now, I just don't want
anyone to die
while I'm in charge.
Well, Hayley, in my experience,
that is being a parent.
What? Um
I just, I got something
I need to tell you.
Just last night, Riley and I
were working late.
We were talking about old times,
and she kissed me.
I I don't think it meant anything.
I think that she just got
caught up in the old memories,
but I stopped it right away.
I told her how serious we were.
It's not gonna happen again,
but I just, I
I needed you to know that.
Okay.
Well, tomorrow's gonna be awkward
when I have to ask her
for money for more staffing.
Well, she left this morning
before you came back.
I guess something came up
at SkyMed Pacific,
but she's gonna be back soon
to make arrangements
for the new Learjet.
Wait, we're getting a new plane?
Yes, we're upgrading the fleet.
And we can afford that?
Well, we can if we put a
freeze on hiring.
Wheezer, I'm short-staffed.
You know that.
Oh, shit, yeah.
You and Riley made this
decision without me?
- Without the chief nurse?
- No, it was not like that.
- It was a flight ops decision.
- Yeah, a flight ops decision
that affects medical.
Wheezer, I need nurses
to staff your fancy new plane.
I already don't have enough people,
and you didn't think
this would affect me?
Hayley, I'm sorry.
Riley was pushing it.
Just like Riley
was the one who kissed you.
Whoa, whoa, whoa,
hold on, hold on. It
It was not like that.
I told you that she kissed me.
This is almost worse, Wheezer.
Making a decision that affects me,
that you would have included
any other chief nurse in,
and you didn't even think
you needed to tell me about it?
I know that you respect me
as your girlfriend, Wheezer,
but it is very clear that you
don't respect me as your equal.
[WOMAN] Thank God you're here!
Please! Please! Please!
You have to help my husband.
Rod's been having trouble
with that trailer hitch.
But when he tried to load the trailer,
the hitch popped off.
The whole thing fell on him.
Okay, we got it.
[WOMAN BREATHING NERVOUSLY]
Breathing but tachycardic.
Likely internal entries.
We got to get this thing off of him.
Hey guys, you're with me.
Pressure's dropping.
We need to get him outta here fast.
We're on it!
- All right.
- You ready to lift?
All right, on three. One, two, three.
[HEROIC MUSIC]
[MUSIC STOPS ABRUPTLY]
- [MONITOR FLATLINES]
- No pulse. He's arresting,
starting compressions.
Give them some room to work. Please!
[DISSOCIATIVE UNDULATING MUSIC]
[EXHALING SHARPLY]
[MUFFLED] Stef!
[MUFFLED] Hey! Stef!
[MUSIC STOPS]
[CLEARLY] Stef!
[PANICKED MUSIC]
Move!
Cardiac arrest following
blunt trauma to the chest.
[SOBBING]
Are you okay?
What happened back there?
I
I think there's something
wrong with me, Lex.
It's my brain.
I just, I keep having all these
weird symptoms, and I
I can't I can't.
Hey, hey, I got you, okay?
I got you, okay? Okay.
- Okay. Okay.
- [STEF SOBBING]
What's wrong with me?
[UNSETTLING MUSIC]
I love you.
Okay, so Crystal and I
have gone through your results.
Whatever it is, don't sugarcoat it.
I want to know.
Your MRI and your CT came back clean.
So did your blood work.
What? How?
No, there has to be something.
I'm-I'm having all these symptoms.
I know, but your results are normal.
But I'm, I'm constantly exhausted.
And I've I've been losing time.
Like, I'll be in the middle
of doing something
and just suddenly wake up,
like I just sleepwalked through it.
I feel so foggy.
Like, I'm untethered,
like I'm standing outside of myself.
Like, I don't feel like me.
I feel
I feel empty.
Stef, you went through
a lot last year.
And you didn't take any time
to deal with it.
I think you need a rest.
Are-are you saying
this is all in my head?
Babe, I'm sure that's not
what she's saying.
No, no, this is this is very real.
I think you have burnout.
It's very common in first responders.
I think you need a break from the job.
What? No, no, this job
is my life. It's who I am.
No, I-I I shouldn't need a rest.
I should be able to just keep going.
But burnout doesn't work like that.
I mean, the more pressure you
put on yourself to keep going,
the worse it gets.
- No, no, I'm I'm fine.
- Hey, Stef.
Look, I don't, I don't need a break.
I just need to get my shit together.
Stef,
as chief nurse,
I have to put you on leave.
What?
You're not fine.
And you can't just get
your shit together
with something like this.
It's not safe for you,
and it's not safe for the patients.
You need treatment.
I'm going to refer you to a therapist.
No, okay. Look,
maybe some 12-step program
worked for you.
But there is nothing wrong with me.
You said it yourself,
my test results are all fine.
Hayley, this is my career.
And you're a good paramedic.
No, I'm a great paramedic.
And you're barely chief nurse.
Hayley, she didn't mean that.
Stef, wait!
