Project Runway: All Stars (2012) s04e05 Episode Script

Designing for the Duchess

Previously on Project Runway: All Stars Your challenge is to create a party dress that must include your own journey of love.
Ooh.
I love to wear babydoll dresses.
It looks like a maternity gown.
These garments represent so much more than just fashion.
You need something else to wow the judges.
Yeah.
There is something tragically romantic about this dress.
Thank you.
I really loved what you did.
Really? It feels very edgy, very modern.
The winner of this week's challenge is Helen.
[Applause.]
Whoo! Somehow this got away from you.
It's a mess.
It is sad.
And why the hanging appendage? Benjamin, you had a low score But you are safe.
The eliminated designer is Kate.
I shouldn't have second-guessed myself, not on Project Runway: All Stars.
14 of the best designers from Project Runway are back.
And this time the competition is bigger than ever.
Each week their skills are tested to the limit, as they compete for the largest prize in runwahistory.
Who will be cut? And who will have it all sewn up? This is Project Runway: All Stars.
Aw.
Hi.
All: Hi.
Five weeks in, and ten of you remain in the competition.
Well, as you know, we like to push you creatively on All Stars, so I want to introduce you to this week's inspiration.
Take a look.
Huh? Paddington bear? [Gasps.]
Oh, how cute! Stop.
No.
I have a collection of him at home.
Paddington bear is very iconic.
When I was growing up, my grandma had, like, this ridiculous collection of Paddington bears.
[Laughter.]
He's so silly, and it's so cute.
Personifying such an icon, it's adorable.
[Applause.]
Paddington bear-- the famous children's story has been adapted for the big screen and will be released in movie theaters this winter.
But what's the challenge? So, to find out more, i can't think of anywhere better to begin than at the place Paddington started his own adventure.
We are sending you to Paddington station Wait.
In London, england.
[All screaming.]
London! Oh, my God! And there's more.
I've arranged for a very special guest to join you at Paddington station to reveal the challenge.
Your flights have been booked, and you leave in just a couple hours.
Time to get back to Gotham west apartments and start packing.
Aah! I will see you back here in a couple of days.
Have a great trip.
Bye.
All: Thank you.
Bye! We're going to London! I love this bag.
Me too.
We're in Paddington station, and I'm just super excited to find out what the challenge is.
This be London.
This be London.
My first steps in London with my suitcase, i see Zanna, and I'm like, "oh, yeah, that's right.
This is not a vacation.
" Hi, designers.
Welcome to London.
Thank you.
Thank you.
To explain more about your challenge, please welcome our very special guest Sarah ferguson, the duchess of York.
No way.
Oh, my God.
Hi.
I've been in London for, like, 20 minutes, and there's a freakin' royal standing right in front of me.
What? Welcome to Project Runway: All Stars.
Thank you so much.
It's good to be here.
Love you to tell the designers about the challenge.
As you know, Paddington bear is famous for his duffle coat, and the London weather is notoriously bad.
So we would love you to design an outdoor coat.
Oh.
I make outerwear.
This is in my wheelhouse.
That's good.
That is good.
I know that Benjamin works in outerwear, so I'm keeping my eye on him.
So London is your inspiration for this week's challenge.
We set up a very special tour of London for you to take in the sights and soak up the atmosphere.
Your sketchbooks and your cameras are waiting for you outside.
You'll sketch on your tour of London before arriving at the fabric shop.
This week your budget is obviously in British pounds.
You have 200 quid each, and after you've bought your fabric, it's back to New York for one day in the workroom.
But before you go, one last surprise.
Duchess? Well, I'm sure you're all going to do brilliantly well, but I would love to wear the winning design.
Wow.
Oh, my God.
That is an amazing opportunity for all of you guys.
To have royalty wear something of yours, that's something that only a handful of people get to do.
So, designers, come and get your money and head outside to find your ride.
Your winter-wear challenge is now on.
I've never been on one of these.
When I lived in London, i used to see these buses driving around all the time.
Cameras and sketchbooks.
But I never actually went on one.
Everyone smile.
Look, look, it's big Ben! Anyone want to know what the time is? Ha ha! I look so cute.
London's gonna be like, "I thought we only had one queen.
" Ah.
"But look at all these queens from the United States.
" Hello, London.
This is my first time out of the country, which is insane.
Oh.
Oh, my gosh.
Yeah, so this is-- i don't--it's just unreal.
It's-- I love how excited Gunnar is to be in London.
[Chuckles.]
When I was designing menswear, the studio I worked in was here.
Wait.
That's where I used to work, and now it's a hole in the ground.
It's a little threatening to understand that Benjamin is from London.
I'm pretty sure that he's gonna come up with something amazing.
I come back to London to win, y'all.
[Laughs.]
I love the architecture.
It's the best representation of European cities, I think.
I get inspired by skyline of the old and new buildings, so I want to create, like, a London skyline over my coat.
I am thinking about the functionality of the coat.
I know a London woman is always on the go, and they need something that they can feel confident in.
I'm sketching a jacket that is highly detailed.
It's military-inspired, tons of different layers.
My goal is to design an amazing piece that's gonna stand out amongst everybody else.
Oh, wow.
The first thing that hits me the most is the juxtaposition between old architecture in the mix with, like, very modern buildings.
So it's like there's old cement with this beautiful glass buildings, and that clash is what I see.
So I'm using those elements to tell the experience that I had in London through this coat.
This is it.
All right, guys, we got 30 minutes.
Let's make it happen! I'm getting this.
This is mine.
I saw a fabric that I've never seen in the states.
I feel like they're so fashion forward with their fabrics.
It's awesome.
Oh, my God, I'm so afraid.
Fabric selection is critical for this.
If you don't have the right fabrics, you're not gonna get the right results, and you're gonna go home.
Just make it work.
I can't really find what I'm looking for, so I find weather-resistant neoprene.
Neoprene--this is the fabric right now.
I'm gonna rock it.
This kind of has color, but not enough color.
I was really influenced by all the ornate details all around London.
I found this fabric that kind of has a ornate feature to it.
I'm gonna go ahead and get four.
I have this gray, which I like, but it's-- oh, yeah, I like this one.
You're 100% using that? No, not 100%.
I wasalking around with this, and then I got here, and I saw the roll.
As soon as I got here, i pulled--I saw it in the window, so I, like, pulled it out as soon as I got here.
So I'm having a little issue with sonjia because she has a fabric that I really want to use.
Can you just tell me if you're not gonna use it? I will promise I'll tell you if I don't use it.
Before the 30 minutes is up? Yeah, of course.
Hurry the [Bleep.]
up and decide what you're doing so that I don't have to compromise my design.
Are you getting the gray or not? I'm getting the gray.
She's cutting it--three yards.
I end up not going with the fabric that I really want.
All right, everybody, that's time.
Time's up.
Let's go.
I'm really pissed because I'm gonna have to reconsider my entire design.
[Squeals.]
How sweet.
Zanna invites us to the penthouse suite in a really fancy hotel.
Hello.
Hi.
Hi, guys.
There is the duchess of York and Zanna, and all i can think is, "oh, [Bleep.]
, i look like a bum.
" Well, we're doing something very British, and we're gonna have afternoon tea.
[Squeals.]
My mum used to say to me that everything gets better with a cup of tea and biscuits.
We're having tea with the duchess.
Come on, then.
My parents aren't going to believe me.
Just insane.
Ah, fabulous.
It looks really good.
Have you got some tea over there? The duchess of York poured me tea, like, herself, with her own hand.
This is crazy.
Okay, Gunnar, i hear that this is your first time to London.
This is my first time in London, yes.
Do you like it? I love it.
Do you? It's so charming.
This is incredible.
Considering that this is my first time out of the country, this is just something that i can't be more grateful for.
I really can't.
I want to thank the duchess so much for being with us.
Whoo.
It's been so, so lovely to have you here.
I think we should drink to new friends.
New friends.
All: Cheers.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Thank you.
How kind.
And we're back.
I miss London already, but time to get down to business.
I'm doing an oversized motorcycle-type coat, jacket thing.
I know there are a few people who do outerwear and do outerwear really well, and so I'm a little nervous.
This is horrible.
Dmitry, how are you feeling? I feel like you're a little on edge.
My neoprene all kind of crinkled, and it doesn't-- doesn't steam? Not at all.
My neoprene did not travel well.
It's all crinkled, and you can't really press it or steam it, so I just have to figure it out.
Yes.
So far in this competition, I've been on top once-- sort of riding the safe zone.
I have a lot of detail that I have to work on.
This is gonna go here.
And I want this coat to be a wow piece.
It's beautiful.
I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Where did my pins go? Oh.
[Chuckles.]
Ha ha.
I'm feeling a little bit irritated by what happened with sonjia in the fabric shop.
I don't know how I'm going I think.
Because I don't really know what my design is now.
The fabric's sending me down a totally different path.
I can't decide the direction of the pleats.
The duchess is gonna be wearing the winning look.
I don't design for royalty.
I just hope she's into, like, some androgynous coats, 'cause that's what I'm gonna make.
I started working on it, and then I started loving the fabric even more.
Maybe this is just gonna be my coat.
It's really cute.
What I'm working on-- it is very London.
So I feel like I could really be on a winner because it's very Benjamin Mach.
Ah.
[Bleep.]
.
Ah, [Bleep.]
Me.
What's wrong with this? Dmitry, change your thread.
You're right.
If you know dmitry like I know dmitry, i think he's freaking out.
Ah, come on, bitch.
He's got a lot of work to do tonight.
I am in a creative mess.
I'm working with neoprene that is crinkled and messed up, so I'm cutting seven layers of mesh.
Layer by layer, I'm moving it down to create an ombre effect.
[Exhales deeply, laughs.]
It's gonna look almost like buildings, but it's not buildings.
It just, like, layers and layers of two.
So you won't see any neoprene.
It's extremely labor intense.
It's a risk, but with every challenge, i try to go ambitious, because it's Project Runway: All Stars.
Ah.
And I want to win.
Hello, my dear all-stars.
All: Hi.
God, it seems like only yesterday we were in London.
Yeah.
Oh, yes, it was! It was.
Wow.
What a whirlwind.
I cannot wait to see what you bought and also the inspiration that you brought back from London.
Hi, Jay.
Hi.
How you doing? Good.
So I'm doing a long coat.
Mm-hmm.
And it's military-inspired.
It's got something different about it.
There's lots of style lines.
I'm just worried about your finishes, like, finishing all this off.
That'll be flawless.
You need it to be.
Yes, thank you.
Thank you.
Okay, good luck.
I like Jay's.
I think it's a little overdone, but his craftsmanship is, like, out of this world.
So I really don't think he has anything to worry about.
Hi, Sam.
Hi, Zanna.
How are you doing? I'm okay.
Good.
Tell me about your coat.
I want to make it kind of like an oversized moto.
Going around the sites in London, like, everything kind of had, like, an ornate feature to it.
Sure.
I'm hoping that it reads well on the runway.
I don't want it to be all gray.
Right.
This fabric may get a little lost in translation on the runway, so you've got to really go for it with those details.
Exaggerate that collar.
Exaggerate the sleeve.
Make sure if it's gonna be oversized It's oversized.
Truly is oversized.
Okay.
There's lot of Sam in this design, and that's what i wanted to see.
Thank you.
All right, good luck.
All right.
Hi, Justin.
Hello.
Did you love London? I love it.
What are you doing? Tell me.
One thing that I like about London is how foggy it is.
Uh-huh.
And that inspires my look.
I created a raglan sleeve.
Okay.
And I will be lining the whole thing with this color.
So this will be a flash of material coming out from underneath? Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Very good.
Thank you.
So how does this reference London to you? For me it's all about just the texture of the city and layering.
This is one of the more tailored pieces I'm seeing in here.
It has to be impeccable.
Yes, yes.
You know that? I do.
I brought this crazy-textured neoprene Uh-huh.
And this very well-defined terylene wool.
And the whole idea of London, to me, was, like, the juxtaposition with modern and classic.
First thoughts I really like it.
Oh, good.
I love the mesh with the more classic.
The sleeves are gonna be great.
I like this length, but really focus on how this is gonna close here and that these fit perfectly.
Right.
I like it.
Good.
I'm gonna leave it at that.
So this is the first time that Zanna absolutely likes what I have to show her.
Boom.
Hi, Zanna.
How's it going? I'm just a bit behind with time.
I found London to be very classic, but it's modern.
I'm not seeing that translated here.
When designing outerwear, it's all about, you know, the pockets, the closures, the collar, the length.
It will work out.
But one day, it's not gonna work out for somebody, and then they're gonna go home.
Constructive criticism-- it's extremely important.
But if I don't agree with it Good luck.
Thank you.
I'm gonna proceed and do what I believe is right.
Hi, Zanna.
How are you? I'm a little bit jet-lagged, I think.
Jet-lagged? I'm, like, not hearing that as an excuse.
It's not an excuse, but you asked how I am, and I'm a little bit cross-eyed.
Okay.
How's that affecting your design? I wanted to put these in for pockets.
Hang on.
So you can see the contents of the pocket? You don't like them, do you? It gets a bit cartoony.
I need the front to look great, and I need this not to look like a trash bag.
From the designers that were on my season, I'm the closest to Benjamin.
I've seen what happens when he gets negative criticism.
He can't get over it, and he becomes his worst enemy.
Okay, all-stars, i am a little bit confused.
I'm seeing some really good designs in here, and I'm also seeing some worrying designs.
I gave you an all-star experience, and I am not seeing all-star quality Yet.
Please do not embarrass me in front of the judges.
This is my hometown.
We have to do this well, and you can.
There's a few hours left.
You can do it.
Thanks, Zanna.
This is, like, my big priority right now.
It reminds me of the Paddington bear.
Oh, really? I didn't think-- oh, well, yeah, the toggles.
It's supposed to be oversized.
You know what I'm saying? I'm ready to do my fitting.
Bring her.
Hi.
How are you? How are you? How are you, love? I've got you in a really awesome coat.
It's wintertime.
Yeah.
I think the most important part of any challenge is the fit.
I love it.
I just need to see where this sits on you.
The most important part of this look, for me, is the shape.
I'm trying to get the collar right.
I'm in it to win it.
In this challenge, I think my biggest competition would probably have to be fabio.
We need to bag this one.
I like his look, but I don't know if the duchess would wear it.
[Laughs.]
Hmm.
Zanna's like, "make it more oversized.
" My model's so lanky that I like the oversized look on her.
I'm definitely gonna go with what Zanna suggested.
Yep.
I'm wearing London.
Yes.
I'm just relieved that my piece is almost finished.
Where it's at is perfect.
I think I need fitted here and then flare out.
After putting the coat on my model, i realize I need to give my model a waist.
I'll figure it out.
I still have a lot of work to do, because this coat is so complex, and I want it to be perfect.
Thank you.
Bye, girl.
I'll see you in the morning.
I can't remember which is the front and which is the back.
[Laughs.]
The elephant in the room is what Benjamin's working on.
I don't even know where he's going with it.
Unless you're on the verge of something really new and different, I'm really concerned about what's happening over there.
Hey, guys, 30 minutes! It looks crazy on me, but it didn't look crazy on her.
There are problems with Sam's work.
It's sagging.
This jacket needs that understructure that's needed to make a jacket look right.
Guys, that's time.
I think she's really in trouble.
We're back! Jack, Jack, Jack.
Don't come back.
It's the morning of the runway.
I still have a lot of work to do, and it has to look perfect.
So I'm trying to do my best to finish it.
I like it, but i don't think London.
I think, like, oslo.
Yeah.
Dmitry's got stiff icicles.
It's like stalactites or stalagmites.
I don't ever know which ones-- one goes down, one goes up.
Whatever he's doing is a little stiff, and I don't want to wear a stiff, crunchy jacket.
Hey, y'all.
Hey.
It's supposed to be short.
I'm doing a bracelet sleeve.
I need to figure out how the collar's gonna, like, lay on you.
My model walks in, and I'm like, "I need to try to fit this on you.
You know, let's work this out.
If you're walking and it falls, just push it back up.
Just like Yeah.
Now my collar won't stand up, and my lapels are just kind of like there instead of being like--having a nice roll to it.
So I'm a little concerned.
Yeah, I'm a little nervous.
I'm not gonna lie.
I think Sam has loads of potential, and she knows a lot of techniques, but it's one of those coats that you would see in, like, a department store.
It looks like something I've seen a million times before.
Okay, it's time to go to the chi hair care salon.
Let's go.
We'll go with a wet look, very sleek.
I want her hair to be like she was caught in the rain, in the London rain.
Just, like, blow this back a little bit.
Yeah.
I really imagine, like, a high pony.
Bring out, like, her iggy azalea.
Well, let's go to the Mary Kay color design studio.
I'm going for a brigitte bardot.
We're gonna use the Mary Kay eye gel.
It looks like you.
Something, like, a little smoky so she's kind of dark and edgy.
Maybe a wing eye on the bottom lid.
It's one of my favorite colors--rich fig.
I like that.
Let's see in the front.
Isn't it cozy, cozy, comfy, comfy? I really like this jacket.
My model is looking really strong.
My coat is looking really strong.
I'm feeling great.
Okay.
I think Jay has a tendency to overdesign.
You made a great coat.
You're now covering a great coat th a vest, and so I think Jay kind of has to find that balance.
I think I'm gonna leave it open.
I really wanted to add pattern to my look, so I grabbed a snakeskin bag from the QVC wall.
I like the snakeskin.
Okay, guys, we have 15 minutes left! I get my model in her final look, and she looks absolutely stunning.
Oh, yeah, open.
I spent a lot of time making this really, really perfect, and I'm really excited to see this walk down the runway.
I love it.
Fabio's dress-- i think he had a pretty dress, but it was not coat, because you cannot put this dress on anything else.
With the tight, short sleeve, it's a dress.
Let the torture begin.
Five minutes, guys! Five minutes! You look gorg.
Cute.
Ben, you might want to put your clothes on her.
Yeah, I just have two stitches left.
Ben, you have five minutes.
But it's just a coat.
Looks good.
I like Justin's look a lot.
I think it's the mixture of, like, the oxblood and the plaid that he chose.
I think Justin's got this in the bag.
Ben, get your coat on.
I feel really good about my design, and I definitely feel like my design is worthy of a win.
Times up! Runway! So cute.
Sarah ferguson, duchess of York, could be wearing my design.
Bye, mommy.

Aw.
Hi.
Did you have the best time? All: Yes.
Was it amazing? Amazing.
Yep.
Well, to celebrate the arrival of Paddington on the big screen, we sent you to London this week, where none other than the duchess of York set your challenge at Paddington station.
Your tour of London and shopping at the best of British fabric stores inspired your winter outerwear.
So who's judging your looks tonight? First, one of the most iconic names in American fashion, Mr.
Isaac Mizrahi.
Cheerio.
[Laughs.]
Our first guest is an emmy-award winning star and a self-confessed Project Runway fan.
From will & grace to the starter wife, smash, and her new show, the mysteries of Laura, please welcome to All Stars Debra messing.
[Cheers and applause.]
Hello, designers.
Our next guest was named British model of the year by the British fashion council.
She's also a singer-songwriter, with her music featured on true blood and boardwalk empire.
Please welcome Karen elson.
Thank you.
[Cheers and applause.]
The judges and I want to see how your London experience influenced your designs.
Have a great show.
All right.
I went very, very audacious with it And I'm loving the result, and I think it's very modern.
It's very artistic, and it's extremely different.
It's modern.
It's very me.
It's exactly what I want to do.
She's got a bit of an edge, but the way a London girl dresses.
She's so cute.
London is completely in my DNA.
I love the styling.
I love my coat.
I think the silver zipper's, like, really popping, standing out, and I'm just hoping they love it as much as I do.
It done to perfection.
Oh.
Nice, Jay.
So well done.
My model is looking really strong.
It's very you.
Absolutely.
My coat is looking really strong-- just the vibe that I wanted to create.
I feel like my look was the best mixture of modern and traditional.
It reminds me of the structures that I saw in London.
Really good.
Yeah.
Thanks, guys.
It's got the old-world style of the tweed, and it also has this new-world style of gunmetal leather lining.
I'm really liking it.
I feel like it has an edge to it that I was looking for.
It's a little big, bigger than I wanted it to be.
My fabric choice is awesome.
It just reminds me of the details that I saw in London, and I just feel connected to it.
That color is great.
Instantly, I'm, like-- I'm so relieved because I got all of my finishing done, and the color blocking looks so modern but so English.
And I'm like, "damn, girl, how'd you do that?" I like the uneven hem too.
She is absolutely gorgeous.
My hands are dripping in sweat, because I feel like i have achieved something that I never knew i was capable of.
It's really well designed, and I'm really, really happy with it.
I love my look.
I love how it swings.
It's looking modern.
It's looking edgy.
I think she looks amazing.
I think my styling's point-on.
I mean, I really do think I'm gonna win this one.
I thought she looked great in the coat.
The sleeve is so cute too.
Maybe I should have closed up the back a little bit more, because it's revealing everything back there, but it's different, and that's what I'm aiming for.
Well, designers, there was a lot of beautiful work on the runway today, so thank you.
Now, if I call your name, please step forward.
Sonjia Helen Gunnar Michelle.
Designers, you're safe.
Your work has kept you in the competition, and we will see you next week.
Thank you so much.
The rest of you have the highest and lowest scores of the week And one of you will be going home tonight.
It's time for your critiques, so let's bring out your models.
Justin, we're gonna start with you.
Tell us how your London experience influenced your design.
My basic inspiration for London is the weather.
It tends to be a little bit rainy, little bit foggy, kind of mysterious, and that inspired my look.
Oh, Justin, I love this.
Thank you.
I think you probably ran out of some fabric, in terms of the back.
Having the slit come down to cover her backside, i think would probably be-- she had a nice backside, so why not? Okay.
I think it's an absolutely exquisite coat.
The lining--it's beautiful.
It's definitely something i would wear.
I love this coat.
It's a smart thing to go to London and think about plaid.
What I'm most impressed about with this coat is how you were able to make outerwear so flattering.
Thank you.
Let's move on to Jay.
Tell us about how your London experience influenced your design.
I just gravitated towards the landscape of the city.
It was very gray and, at the same time, very modern.
So I created an outerwear piece that's versatile.
It's a coat underneath, and this piece is a vest.
Can you turn around, please? I have good news and bad news.
Okay.
The good news is I love the back of the coat.
The bad news is i don't love the front of the coat.
Oh.
I think there's so many things that are going on that are competing against themselves.
Jay, there are some things about this that don't work, but, to me, there are so many things about this that do work.
I think the top of the thing is fabulous, mustard and all.
There's just a little bit too much to look at in the front.
Just simplify, I think.
To be honest, for me, i don't feel the London influence.
Dmitry, how did you interpret London in your design? It's very classic, but it's very modern at the same time.
It's moody, so I wanted to create something classic but modern, and I used neoprene, and I covered it with mesh, and I absolutely love it.
I really appreciate this coat.
I feel the country, you know.
I feel London.
It looks a little uneven at the hemline just a tiny bit, but, you know, I can overlook it, because, in general, it's very, very beautiful.
Thank you.
Dmitry, this coat is so great, and I'm mesmerized by this idea of making a coat out of tulle.
That's such a fabulous idea.
I feel like I need new words in the vocabulary to come up with how much I appreciate your talent because I can't find the appropriate words to let you know how much i appreciate what you do.
Thank you guys.
It means a lot.
Hi, Sam.
Tell us about your London trip and how it influenced your design.
The thing I noticed the most was that all the architecture had so much, like, details that was very ornate.
So I was like, "I want to find something like that.
" And I found this fabric, which was, like, exactly like some of the details that I saw in the windows.
I just don't feel the London influence.
England being English, London is-- it's a print.
It's a print, but it doesn't translate from where I'm sitting.
I mean, to be honest, it looks like it could be a pair of curtains, you know.
I mean, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
No, it's all right.
I like it very much from her head down to her waist.
The bottom half is where i have a problem.
The lifting up on the sides, the balance of it seems off to me.
The back's beautiful.
This fabric choice is your biggest enemy.
It looks like a robe more than a coat.
Okay.
Fabio, let's hear from you.
Tell us how your London experience influenced your outerwear.
Well, it was my first time in London, and I remember through the tour trip, i looked back, and I saw this amazing cathedral.
And right behind it was this really modern building, full glass, so I was really inspired by this idea of, like, classic and modern clashing together.
Fabio, I just love this coat.
It looks completely new to me, this coat.
Something about the length and the particularly beautiful movement-- I'm mad about that sleeve length and the way it fits, but doesn't exactly.
It doesn't look tight.
She looks comfortable.
Love it.
Thank you.
I kind of a feel like I'm developing an unhealthy obsession with you.
[Laughs.]
You're so thoughtful in your process, but creative at the same time.
I think the construction is impeccable.
It's something I've never seen before.
Thank you so much.
Benjamin, you know London well, huh? Well, I mean, I'm an aussie, but I lived in London for ten years, so it was nice to be back.
For my design, i wanted to draw a little bit on British heritage and do just a kind of fun it girl.
There's something junior about that flounce on the bottom.
The design was not inspiring.
I like the fabric, but the pockets, while I like the idea that you're using a completely different texture, it just throws me for some reason.
Something about the way it's cut in that fabric is, like, blah.
There's something inexplicably drab about this that I don't usually equate with you.
Yeah.
It's just--why so drab? Is that a rhetorical question? No, I mean it.
[Laughter.]
Like, what made you go so drab? I mean, I was drawn to lots of different fabrics.
I appreciate how you cut the fabric, and I think the pockets are fun.
I just wish that something else tied them in.
Yeah.
Thank you, Benjamin.
Thank you.
Thank you, designers.
You've all work so hard, and now we have our work cut out for us.
We're gonna deliberate, and you guys can have a seat in the backstage lounge, and we'll call you back.
Hey, guys.
What's going on? I've never had a critique like that before.
Like, every single one of them loved it.
Yes.
I think they liked the direction.
They just wished that i kind of, like, added in more.
No one saw the print at all, which I had a feeling that would happen.
That was a very exciting runway.
Yes.
Should we talk about dmitry first? He is the definition of an all-star.
I was blown away by the artistry.
I felt like he captured something really wistful.
There was a real masculinity to dmitry's coat.
I thought there was something a little rock and roll about it too.
There was something-- i don't know--really moved me.
Let's move on to Justin.
I love that someone did plaid.
It does seem like a love letter to London to me.
I was blown away, again, by how flattering it was.
You girls didn't like the back so much, and I agree to a certain extent.
He could've executed that in a way that you would've liked.
It had more artistry to it.
That's right.
Both: Yeah.
So then let's talk about fabio.
Fabio's coat was such a surprise to me.
Yes.
Why? I loved of the use of his fabrics.
There was something so playful about it, witty about it.
I just loved seeing the movement of it.
And the pleats.
And the back.
The pleats were so exquisite in the back, absolutely.
It was just so well thought out.
Let's move on to our low scores.
Let's talk about Jay.
I think there was something about that gray and mustard that just made it too sporty.
The back of the coat worked.
It did.
Yeah.
Yes, it did.
It could've turned into something really magnificent.
And then there was Benjamin.
Well, I'm--I'm, like, offended by that.
He knows better than that.
I mean, we've seen such good things from him, but it's like he shot himself in the foot by selecting that fabric Yes.
Right off the bat.
Like I said, it looked like vintage.
Granny takes a trip.
And then you put those pockets on, and it doesn't tie in with, like, any other concept within the coat.
It's like something you'd buy for your teenager.
Somehow, that design he turned in this week was like a resignation.
Let's talk about Sam.
It just seemed like it was placed on, and it looked crumpled and untidy.
The way she sent it down the runway was so poorly styled.
It was bad.
And the fabric.
I felt bad saying it looked like curtains.
It just felt--like you said, a robe.
So we know who we're sending home? Yep.
Yes.
Okay.
Let's bring them out.
Designers, one of you is the winner of this week's challenge, and one of you will be going home tonight.
Designers, one of you is the winner of this week's challenge, and one of you will be going home tonight.
Justin, you're safe.
Thank you.
You can leave the runway.
Thank you.
Good job.
Dmitry Fabio One of you will be able to boast the duchess of York as your new client.
And that designer is Fabio.
Yay.
[Applause.]
You guys are gonna kill me one day.
Congratulations, fabio.
Thank you so much.
What an honor.
And congratulations to you, dmitry.
Thank you.
Thank you, boys.
You can leave the runway.
We'll see you next week.
Thank you.
Pleasure to meet you guys.
I don't picture of myself as, you know, designing for royalty.
And it was always something that I really wanted to achieve, and it's amazing.
I'm super happy.
Did you win? [Cheers and applause.]
Congratulations.
Oh, I'm so proud of you.
And now the hard part and our lowest scores.
Jay This week you're safe.
Thank you.
Thank you.
You can leave the runway.
Good luck, guys.
And that leaves Benjamin and Sam.
Benjamin, you succeeded in giving us something young, but not necessarily fresh.
The proportions were off, and the overall design was drab.
It feels like you're not bringing your all to All Stars.
Sam, we could see your vision, but you totally fell short on execution.
Your coat was poorly styled, and your fabric choice didn't do you any favors.
Tonight the eliminated designer is Benjamin Which means, Sam, you're still in the competition.
Thank you.
Thank you.
You can leave the runway.
I'm sorry.
It's all right.
I'm still in.
Oh, my God.
I know.
I'm like-- ohh.
Oh, my God.
Never want to be there ever again.
Benjamin, what can we say except thank you so much for joining us on All Stars.
Thank you for having me.
I had so much more that I wanted to do, but I'll do it outside of here.
We know you have a great future, so we wish you all the best.
I would say I'm definitely one of the better designers in the competition, and I have a much stronger attention to detail and finish.
Benjy-poo.
Group hug.
You're amazing.
This is not gonna be the last runway show for Benjamin Mach.
Next on Project Runway: All Stars This is a fashion gamble.
All: Lace.
Whoo! All: Sunday brunch.
Sonjia, your fabric is brocade, and your event is bachelorette party.
There's a fabric in here that's not what it's supposed to be.
Was your fabric on the brocade section? Yeah.
'Cause I don't think it's brocade.
Mind your business.
I think you're the one to beat.
This skirt bothers me to hell.
I think Georgina's being nice.
It was aggressively bad.
