Tomorrow’s Enterprise

It's just a lot of pressure.
I mean, I'm 22.
I've barely done anything
worth admiring yet.
Hailing frequencies open, Captain.
How am I supposed to
have fun when I know
I have to become this universally known,
super-translating, unflappable,
hardworking badass?
Our job puts us up against
death more than is fair.
PIKE: For courage under fire,
I am pleased to award you
with a battlefield promotion
to lieutenant, junior grade.
UHURA: Personal log. Stardate 2873.2.
The Starfleet Protocols Refresher
course was, well, refreshing.
I've returned to Enterprise in time
to take part in an unusual mission.
We're on the edge of a white hole,
a unique and rare occurrence.
Our job is to send a probe
inside the white hole
and to listen to what is in the center.
A moment I'm looking forward to,
if I can get to the bridge in time.
SCOTTY: Welcome home, Lieutenant.
Um, now that you're back,
I was wondering if, maybe,
you might possibly enjoy getting
a drink or something sometime?
Sorry, Scotty, I'm due back
on the bridge. Talk later?
Yeah.
UHURA: Life has this way of
constantly trying to interrupt you
when you're trying to get the job done.
(clears throat) Captain.
Good to have you back.
You'll update me on all
the new protocols later?
I'd love to, but I have to
review them myself first.
UNA: I wouldn't mind hearing as well.
ORTEGAS: Nerds. You only live for
tomorrow's potential assignment.
UHURA: You never know
what's going to happen next.
I want to be ready.
PIKE: Speaking of our
current assignment, Ortegas,
how close are you trying to
get us to our new friend here?
ORTEGAS: You know how
rare white holes are?
I'm thinking up close and personal.
Spock, what range do we need to get
Starfleet what they're asking for?
SPOCK: Sensors are already within range
to collect enough data to test the theory
that white holes are the
other side of black holes.
PIKE: So, stay put.
Anyone ever tell you you're no fun?
SPOCK: You do.
(garbled music playing over comms)
Uh, Captain, I
- Red alert. Shields up.
- Aye, sir.
Shield's at 40% and dropping.
- Controls not responding.
- Scotty, talk to me.
SCOTTY: Damage to the warp core.
Gonna need a tick to get
her back on her feet.
Make it happen.
Spock, what were those things?
SPOCK: Unclear. They are out
of sensor range but
holding us in position
with some form of tractor beam.
So, we're a sitting duck
and we can't see a thing.
Is it a Tuesday? Feels like a Tuesday.
But we can hear, Captain.
Before we were hit, I heard a signal
coming from inside the white hole.
- What was it?
- UHURA: Music.
- It could be a language.
- If you have theories, tell us.
SCOTTY: Get back to your seat.
There's an energy buildup inside the
- Uhura, no! Uhura!
- Scotty.
- Scotty, are you all right?
- Been better.
Inertial dampeners aren't responding.
Warp core needs more juice.
Anything you need?
I No.
No, I
just wanted to make sure
you're all right. Carry on.
PIKE: Nyota.
What is it?
- I
- PIKE: You're bleeding.
- Are you all right?
- Um
Permission to go to sickbay, Captain?
(trilling, beeping)
No sign of concussion.
I heard Scotty screaming.
He mentioned my name.
(sighs) I believe Mr. Scott is fine.
Relatively speaking.
He's running all over the ship
rerouting power to the warp core.
I guess I'm fine.
Must've just gotten my bell rung.
CHAPEL: Yeah, we really need to
get you to play our weekly card game.
- You're a terrible liar.
- (laughs)
We would clean up.
You keep mentioning that.
It's not an enticing invite.
M'BENGA: It gets better.
- Spend time with others
- (hypospray whirs)
you can learn things.
CHAPEL: This is for the pain.
Ain't nothing I can do for
that terrible poker face.
M'BENGA: Bed rest.
One full shift.
Doctor's orders.
(sighs)
(computer chirps)
COMPUTER: Scanning for
anomalous signals complete.
No anomalous signals found.
Restarting signal scan of white hole.
SCOTTY: Uhura, no!
Uhura!
(gasping)
COMPUTER: Scanning for
anomalous signals complete.
No anomalous signals found.
Restarting signal scan of white hole.
Uhura to security.
You heard Scotty calling Mayday,
and you were injured?
It was happening, but
it hadn't happened yet.
Not that I remember. I
It was just for a second, I felt
Realities shifting.
Metal taste in your mouth?
Vertigo?
Dislocation? Crushing need to pee?
I'm glad I called you.
This could be your first experience
with a temporal incident.
Time stuff?
Are you sure?
But you know the specifics.
Keep the circle of temporal variance as
small as possible to not change timelines.
Yeah, it's just
Scotty's in danger in the future.
- Oh, you don't know that.
- I know what I heard.
Nyota, any of these
missions could be our last.
This may sound cold, but
trying to change the future
can only make things worse.
You know what's not in the book?
Time travel is heartbreaking.
The only day we have is today.
So, you let this go, Nyota, okay?
La'An.
It's Scotty.
If he's in danger, we have to
do whatever we can to help him.
- Whenever it happens
- That's out of the question.
We never even had this conversation.
Which means I never told you
that locating the target
of the distress call
might provide you with more information.
(trilling)
(buzzing)
Okay. (sighs)
300th time's the charm.
Yeah.
(trilling)
COMPUTER: Anomalous
communications signal detected.
Starfleet comms scan. Yes.
This is Lieutenant Nyota Uhura
of the USS Enterprise. Do you copy?
UHURA (over comms): I'm Nyota
Uhura of the USS Enterprise.
Okay. Hallucinating my own voice.
- How hard did I hit my head?
- You're not hallucinating.
And I'm not hallucinating.
I think we might be the same person.
That's impossible.
And yet, somehow we're here talking.
Listen.
Scotty's in danger.
I think we have to work
together to try and save him,
and we may not have much time.
PIKE: Space.
The final frontier.
These are the voyages of
the starship Enterprise.
Its five-year mission:
to explore strange new worlds
to seek out new life
and new civilizations
to boldly go where
no one has gone before.
UHURA: Personal log. Stardate 2876.2.
We retrofitted a shuttle,
and if the captain gives final approval,
we are about to set off on a mission
to explore the inside of a
newly formed black hole.
Dangerous? Yes,
but I've been trying not to
think too much about tomorrow.
You worried about the mission?
I triple-checked the numbers.
You know I'd never let
anything happen to you, huh?
Oh, no kissing on the bridge.
Obviously. We're in the turbolift.
Or on mission. No distractions.
Okay, but do we have to stay hidden?
- (door whooshes open)
- Okay.
Okay.
SCOTTY: Shuttlecraft
flight plan, Captain.
Thank you, Mr. Scott.
Lieutenant Uhura,
I heard last night's game
was one for the record books.
You were missed, Captain.
I'm still trying to figure
out the correct amount
of distance between a
captain and his crew.
(chuckles) I'm not sure you're
supposed to say that part out loud.
In any case, the good doctor
has been eagerly awaiting your arrival.
Settle a bet for us, Lieutenant?
I did not make a wager, Dr. Boyce.
Semantics.
I merely suggested my hand
should have been sufficient
to close out our weekly poker game.
And that your behavior strongly implied
you did not believe you would win.
Ah, is that what happened?
Poker is not just a math game.
It's also
A mind game. Let yesterday go.
KIRK: The key to a good bluff,
Mr. Spock,
is never knowing if it was one.
Mm-hmm.
Humans.
I reviewed these earlier.
It's an excellent opportunity,
I'll give you that,
but there's no one on board
who can do the kind of flying
that this experiment requires.
Which is why I invited the
best pilot in Starfleet
to join you. You're welcome.
Report to Shuttle Bay Two.
Mission approved.
SCOTTY: I like Boyce and McCoy,
but I still prefer the weeks
- when M'Benga's on board, you know?
- UHURA: Joseph is spending
more and more time on Vulcan.
Christine thinks he may end up
transferring there permanently.
Sounds like Bones will
be taking over full-time.
SCOTTY (sighs): Well,
nothing stays the same.
- That is the one thing I do know.
- Mm.
Well, well, well. (laughs)
Flyboy.
Grease monkey.
- Love the hair.
- You, too.
(sighs)
(sighs) Okay, lovebirds, let's go.
- What?
- Not us.
Vámonos.
(sighs)
COMPUTER: All personnel stand clear.
Shuttle door closing.
Shuttle takeoff in five,
four, three, two, one.
SCOTTY: The modifications to
the shuttlecraft's shields
will handle the increased
gravity of the black hole
- so it can't
- ORTEGAS: Crush us like a grape.
UHURA: I see why you decided
on the Starfleet teaching gig
instead of commercial piloting.
SCOTTY (American accent):
Hello, passengers,
this is your, uh, captain speaking.
On our short hop to Mars today,
we hope to avoid
any explosive decompression
or organ liquefaction.
Please buckle up and enjoy your flight.
(regular voice): Uh, seriously,
though, we should be safe as houses.
Uh, but remember, because of the
increased gravimetric pressure,
any emergency beam-outs will
have to be one at a time, okay?
ORTEGAS: Huh.
What could possibly go wrong?
You know something?
I hate when you say that.
So, what is going on between you two?
Nothing.
Something.
We're keeping it under wraps.
Sort of?
It's just
It's casual.
With the crew changing, Pike leaving,
Jim taking command,
we sort of held on to each other.
And then we just kept holding.
Okay, so what's the problem?
You're an excellent human, and,
dare I say the words, so is Scotty.
(whispering): We've been
casual this last year.
Now it's getting serious.
But
I know it's not going to last.
So does he.
I mean, there's no future in it.
Look, there's a "now" in it.
And sometimes that's enough.
Shield's holding.
(Scottish accent): Ugh, Lassie,
there's no bucket of bolts
built I cannot contain.
"I don't know how she fell out
of the airlock, Captain Kirk."
(chuckles)
(sighs)
(musical signal)
Uh, m-music?
(musical signal playing over speaker)
- Where is that coming from?
- Hmm.
- (alarm sounds)
- Proximity alert.
Multiple bogeys inbound.
(musical signal)
SCOTTY: Bogeys from
inside the black hole?
I think it's a language.
(signal intensifies)
ORTEGAS: Doesn't sound
super friendly anymore.
Can you translate?
Uh, universal translator
can't decode it.
Let's see if I switch algorithms.
Get back to your seat.
There's an energy buildup inside the
(grunting)
SCOTTY (echoes): Uhura!
ORTEGAS: Lost engines.
I can't control the helm.
The shields are failing.
Mayday. Do you copy, Enterprise?
We've lost power and Nyota's injured.
- Beam her back immediately.
- Scotty, wait.
One at a time, remember?
(echoes): I'll be right behind you.
Nyota, thank God.
UHURA: Beam them back. Beam them back.
- The shuttle's breaking up.
- "Them"? Wh
Who-who are you talking about?
Scotty and Ortegas they're in danger.
They're
No.
No, I
They're gone? I can't
- I can't find them. I
- Uhura.
You need to take a beat.
I need to get them back!
SPOCK: Lieutenant,
I can see you are distressed.
However, Captain Ortegas has not been
on Enterprise for some time.
She is currently an
instructor on Bindar-12.
KIRK: And Scotty
Nyota, Scotty died a year ago.
- He can't be dead. I don't know what's
- Nasty bump on the head.
None of you are listening to me.
CHAPEL: Hey.
- Easy.
- (exhales)
Here. Look.
- Hey. Miss me?
- You're alive.
Last time I checked.
Anybody want to tell
me what this is about?
I got students waiting and drinks
with a definite mistake after that.
I'll call you back and explain later.
Thanks, Erica.
KIRK: One more thing.
Computer, play back recording.
UHURA (over recording): Mayday,
Mayday, do you copy?
There's energy building
up inside the black hole.
Requesting immediate
evac from the shuttle.
No.
Okay, you are physically fine.
No, that's not what I remember.
24 hours, relaxation and rest.
Doctor's orders.
Captain.
Jim, I need to figure
out what's going on.
You heard the doctor.
Stand down, Lieutenant.
That's an order.
UHURA: Computer,
repeat scan of shuttle records
just before the explosion.
Number of life signs?
COMPUTER: Number of life signs
in shuttlecraft before core breach:
one.
(sighs)
Okay.
70th time's definitely the charm.
All right.
Computer
try scanning the black hole
for any residual life signs instead.
Scanning.
Come on, Scotty.
You can't be gone. Please.
Please.
No residual life signs.
Are there any signals from
inside the black hole?
Scanning.
Anomalous communications
signal detected.
On speaker.
UHURA (over speaker): This is Lieutenant
Nyota Uhura of the USS Enterprise.
Do you copy?
I'm Nyota Uhura of the USS Enterprise.
Okay.
Hallucinating my own voice.
How hard did I hit my head?
You're not hallucinating.
And I'm not hallucinating.
I think we might be the same person.
- That's impossible.
- And yet,
somehow we're here talking.
Listen, Scotty's in danger.
I think we have to work
together to try and save him.
And we may not have much time.
UHURA: Yesterday something
hit us from a black hole,
and Scotty was just gone.
Suddenly, everyone thinks
he died a year ago.
UHURA: Well, a year ago is my time,
but our Scotty's fine.
- Scotty's still alive?
- Yeah.
He actually tried to ask me out today.
- What did you say?
- It was so awkward.
I pretended not to hear him.
(sighs) Right.
I forgot. Super mature.
Uh, well, I had a lot on my mind.
I just got back from
the conference and
I can't believe I'm explaining this.
You're literally talking to yourself.
- You understand that, right?
- You know,
if you maybe stop thinking
so hard about your career
and learn to live in the moment,
you might not be running into this mess.
Are you exactly the person
I'm gonna end up like?
You haven't been through
everything I have.
You will, but not yet.
And eventually everything
I'm saying will make sense,
but right now we have to
work together to fix this.
- Okay.
- Good news is,
Scotty's not dead in your time yet,
so we have a chance
to stop whatever it is
that's going to kill him
and change the future.
- Ugh. I hate time travel.
- I hate time travel.
Uh, but how?
What were you doing when time changed?
Ugh, exploring a black hole.
It seems so stupid now.
- So trivial.
- Not trivial.
There's a white hole here.
I remember that white hole.
Spock said that white
holes and black holes
- could theoretically be
- Different sides of the same coin.
Right.
- Was there a pulse on your side?
- Yes, and
when it hit, that's when
everything seemed to change.
That's when I heard your comms signal.
(sighs) This is starting to feel
a lot like quantum entanglement.
Could we create some
kind of reverse pulse?
Could that undo everything?
The math of that could
take forever to figure out,
and we don't know when
Scotty dies in my time.
What if we only have hours?
Well, we don't just have
hours between the two of us.
We have a year.
Remember?
- I have to find Spock.
- I have to find Spock.
I am currently engaged
with attempting to remove
our ship from the
anomaly's tractor beam.
But, yes, black holes and white
holes are known to alter time.
Time changes we may not even perceive.
This is theoretical, is it not?
Yes.
Totally, purely theoretical.
As such, your time
reversal scenario is sound.
But to create a reverse pulse
for the precise energy signature
- would take months.
- Works for me.
I will consider your mathematical
conundrum at a less urgent time.
Of course.
Thanks, Spock.
Okay, future me, you're up.
(humming)
Mr. Spock. How goes it?
At a standstill, I am afraid.
I am attempting to reroute
all power to engines
to help free us from our tether
to the black hole anomaly.
Speaking of anomalies,
do you remember the white hole we found
in this same quadrant a year ago?
- And how I asked you about
- A quantum entanglement equation
that took almost a year to solve?
(clears throat)
I apologize for my tone.
As you can no doubt tell,
I am clearly upset.
Yes. I'm sensing that.
It is just that
I imagined you would
have come to me sooner.
The calculations were intensive.
Spock, I apologize.
Is this apology sincere or
one of your famous bluffs?
Truly I'm sorry.
Apology accepted.
In any case, had you asked me sooner,
I am afraid I would have
told you your theory was
- Incorrect?
- incomplete.
For a reverse pulse to
revert a corrupted timeline,
it requires a very
particular kind of anchor.
A quantum condensate.
Like a diamond?
A dilithium diamond.
Oh
those are incredibly rare.
Almost entirely no longer
naturally occurring in the quadrant.
Although they can,
of course, be synthesized
in just under a year with relative ease.
A year? A year.
Wow, that is a very long time.
But suppose you did have the time?
What would you synthesize exactly?
SCOTTY: Antimatter?
What for?
- Long-term experiment.
- Well, how long?
- About a year?
- A year?
What-what are you trying to make,
a dilithium diamond?
Oh, how'd you guess?
Uh, well, antimatter I can get you,
but to make a dilithium diamond,
you-you'd need to keep it
in a sealed container to
be steadily compressed
by antiprotons.
You don't say.
Well, I didn't realize you
fancied this type of thing.
Well, I contain multitudes.
Indeed. Um (chuckles)
Maybe you could explain your
experiment to me over a,
you know, a, a drink?
A meal?
A snack?
- UHURA: Say yes.
- (softly): What? No.
Uh, yeah, of course.
I-I know you're busy.
It's-it's no worries, uh
No, Scotty, that's not
what I meant, I just
(sighs) Just be safe, okay?
Yep.
UHURA: I can't believe how
much old me missed out on.
Right now I'm focused
on the task at hand.
You're focused on the future.
Never appreciating what's
right in front of you.
In front of us.
You keep mentioning that.
(mechanism whirring)
Why didn't you say yes to Scotty?
I just don't like being pressured.
Okay?
Besides, what's in front of me
is what should be in front of you.
Container number 629. Got it?
(high-pitched whirring)
(device beeping)
Okay.
Please.
(exhales)
Hmm.
Which part of "get some rest"
was confusing to you?
I was just looking for something
to take my mind off what I heard.
Then I remembered this experiment
that I left here almost a year ago.
Scotty helped me with it.
You know what those old
memories can bring back.
UHURA: Great. Get into
position. Copy, you.
(comms chime)
Can I ask you a question?
You just did.
If you could go back
and change your past,
what you did do, what you didn't
would you?
Are you talking about me and Spock?
I mean, I just recently had
a near-death experience,
and now I'm questioning
all of my life choices.
- Ah.
- (sighs)
Sometimes you don't
fully appreciate things
until after they're gone.
I love Roger.
I'm so excited to marry him.
But I wouldn't trade my time
with Spock for anything.
Don't live for tomorrow.
You don't know how many
tomorrows you have.
Today is what matters.
Seize it, and all that.
Now go, get some rest.
- Go.
- (sighs)
You may be excused from
duty but not from our game.
- (laughs)
- I'm gonna win my money back.
Oh, Christine.
You're so not.
- Oh
- (chuckles)
(laughs) Get out of here.
Okay, I've just dropped
off the dilithium diamond.
I'll be ready to remotely transport
it into the black hole on my end.
And then I'll send the reverse pulse
into the white hole on mine.
And when they connect? Boom.
Timeline restored.
Has it ever been that easy?
No. Not so far.
All right, now I've just got to get
the captain to send the reverse pulse.
Oh, piece of cake.
- Just bluff your way through it.
- Right.
Of course. Obviously.
How would I do that?
(laughs softly)
Just match my pitch.
I used to say that.
Apparently, I still do.
Bridge.
KIRK: Lieutenant.
Dr. Boyce examined me and
cleared me for light duty.
Good to have you back.
But go easy, okay?
Your turn.
Nyota, what are you doing here?
Uh communications things.
Uh, things need communicating.
Sir.
- You have got to be kidding.
- Shh.
You're supposed to be resting.
It's complicated,
but I need to send an energy pulse
into the anomaly.
I'm sorry?
SPOCK: Captain, sensors indicate
another energy pulse from the anomaly.
Energy pulse? Us, too.
I think we're too late.
- All decks, brace for impact.
- All decks, brace for impact.
- We're too late.
- We're too late.
(both shout)
(groaning, panting)
(panting)
- Engineering, report.
- SCOTTY: This is Engineering, sir.
- Scotty.
- No damage to the repairs.
Warp core power is restored,
but we are not moving.
We're tethered to that white hole.
The weapons will be on
line within the hour.
Weapons?
Nyota, it's me.
We switched places.
The second pulse must have switched us.
Do you copy? Nyota, do you copy?
PIKE: Nyota.
You look different.
Why did you want to send an
energy pulse into the anomaly?
It's not important, Admiral.
Well, I appreciate the promotion.
(sighs) But you heard Scotty.
We're getting weapons back,
we'll be out of this mess soon.
In the meantime, get back to sickbay.
That's an order.
Yes, Captain.
(door whooshes open)
Sickbay.
UHURA: How long was I out?
CHAPEL: Not long.
You banged your head again
and needed sedation.
You got to stop doing that.
When did you have time to
go back to your old look?
Dr. Boyce?
Captain?
Ah.
Jim.
Captain Jim?
Okay.
Glad to see you're awake.
And alive.
I guess I missed the new hair.
Although it's kind of like the old hair.
Oh. I don't pay attention.
I changed it recently.
I feel fine. Same as before.
Jim. Captain, sir.
- I'm really okay.
- You don't sound like yourself.
Oh, I'm myself.
I'm-I'm me from
right now, like
today.
KIRK: Mm. And now you really
don't sound like yourself.
Nurse, can you hand me
a bioscanner, please?
Oh, I really don't
think that's necessary.
If anything, I feel fine.
Uh, mostly fine. Fine-ish.
SPOCK: Captain Kirk, I have
completed the scan of the anomaly.
There are no life-forms present.
KIRK: Good.
How long until weapons are on line?
Within 30 minutes, Captain.
Excellent. I'll be right
up and we can proceed.
Kirk out.
"Proceed," sir?
With blowing up those star clusters.
Sir, perhaps there's another way.
Three "sirs" in one day.
You really did hit your head,
didn't you?
Whatever that pulse was,
it tethered our ship to the black hole.
We can't break free,
so we're gonna blast our way out.
Maybe you should get some more rest.
(door whooshes open)
UHURA: Future me, do you copy?
I'm trapped in your time
where nothing makes sense.
Especially what you've
done to my quarters.
I mean, what's this monstrosity?
A mural in Dryk'tee?
That's practically a dead language.
I mean, we hardly know it.
Although
"A miner"
Jim.
I mean, Captain.
No one calls me that off duty
except people who know me less well.
How is that you?
Don't be silly. I-I know you.
You see, the thing is
I can tell that you're lying.
And if there's one thing I
know about Nyota Uhura
is that no one bluffs better.
I know because I taught
you how to do it.
We were holed up on Starbase Six.
That solar storm had every
ship in space dock for parsecs,
and we played poker for
five days straight.
You, me, Ortegas, Gary.
Mitchell.
Jenna's stepbrother?
Played until no one, and I mean no one,
could tell that you were bluffing.
Not even me.
But that wasn't you, was it?
No.
No, it wasn't.
Not yet, at least.
That's the first honest
thing you've said to me.
I am Nyota Uhura.
I'm just
I'm from your past.
Future me and I
somehow got linked through the
anomaly and switched places.
(sighs)
I hate time travel.
That's what La'An said yesterday.
La'An?
Jim.
Where is she?
Is she here?
(sighs)
Let's talk about you.
So, if you're here,
then my Uhura is
Mm-hmm.
- (sighs)
- UHURA: Get to the quarters,
stay low, don't destroy
the space-time continuum.
SCOTTY: N-Nyota? Um
Oh, my God. Scotty.
We got to stop meeting
like this. (chuckles)
- Do we?
- I like what you've done with your hair.
But I thought you were
maybe avoiding me.
Avoiding you?
No. No. (laughs softly)
No. I'm delighted to see you.
SCOTTY: Oh, me, too. Uh, you. (laughs)
Uh, for many reasons.
Mostly this hug. Uh
Oh, second most important, um
Hmm?
Yeah, I've been making
repairs all over the ship,
and, uh, on one of my scans, I caught
an echo of something coming
from inside the white hole.
- Um
- An audible frequency?
- Yeah.
- Like a sound wave?
Yeah, which I know is your area.
Um, hence the PADD.
Yeah, it's weird, it's like
I can only detect one side
of 'em, but if you could see
what's on the other side, um
You could maybe translate
what these notes are actually saying.
No idea what's on the other, though.
It's like half a note, you know.
Because it's not just a
white hole or a black hole.
It's both.
Scotty, you're a genius.
(laughs softly) Yeah, thanks.
Um
(sighs)
(chuckles)
PIKE: Nyota.
Sir.
Captain.
Not "admiral"?
Like on the bridge?
- Uh
- Yeah.
It would also explain the haircut.
Really?
Damn.
Believe it or not.
Yeah, you know,
when I pick up on a pattern,
I start to see the connections.
You're older.
Not by much but definitely a year or so.
How did you know?
Oh, I know a thing or
two about time travel.
Weapons will be on line soon.
But something tells
me you know something
I should know before I
fire on that star cluster.
Hmm?
I'm guessing you want to tell
me something, but you can't
because, well the future.
I'll take your silence as a yes.
- Yes.
- Uh
Sorry.
(sighs)
You want to do something?
You want to stop something?
And I'm guessing Scotty is
connected to this somehow?
I saw you hug him. Twice.
Uh
He
Can I just tell you?
We did something to the timeline,
and now Scotty's in danger.
I-In the future?
Here. Now. In the future,
Scotty's already dead,
only he's not supposed to be.
How? What-what happens?
I don't know.
Something is going to
happen because of the pulses
the anomaly is emitting.
We thought we had a way to fix it,
but we failed,
and now I'm stuck here,
so we need another way.
"W-We"?
Me. And me.
Oh.
Scotty found data from
this side of the anomaly
that might help, but it's incomplete.
The other half of it is in
the future, where I was.
Well, uh
like I said, I know a little something
about time travel and
(chuckles): Actually
a little bit more than I'd like to know.
If this is because I
called you Admiral, that
No, it's not.
- Chris.
- "Chris"?
You know I've never heard you
call me by my first name before?
(chuckles)
Kind of like the sound
of that coming from you.
Everything I am in Starfleet,
everything I learned,
it's because you believed in me.
It was an honor, my friend.
But like I said
I know a little something
about time travel,
and I can't tell you what to do.
Only you can tell you what to do.
Thank you, Admiral.
For all of it.
(door whooshes open)
(door whooshes shut)
She's not her, is she?
Not precisely.
Come on. Am I really that bad at this?
- Oh, yeah, really bad.
- Yes.
- Alternate dimension?
- Time travel.
CHAPEL: Oh.
I dated a girl once who swore
she worked for something
called the Department of
Temporal Investigations.
None of that sounded pretty.
She was kind of nuts.
Really nice arms, though.
- Christine.
- KIRK: Christine.
Sorry.
Yeah, okay.
Are you past you or future you?
One-year-ago me.
Right.
Well, I like that you.
Not as good at poker.
A-And wh and what are we doing here?
Well, as far as I can tell,
breaching pretty much
every regulation Starfleet
has about time travel.
I'm here to save Scotty.
KIRK: Ah.
Except that one.
Nyota
Scotty's dead.
He's not supposed to be.
(sighs)
How?
How did he die?
CHAPEL: It was an accident
on a mission a year ago.
We were trying to free ourselves
from the gravitational
field of a white hole.
His console exploded.
You were with him.
You sang to him.
You sang to him before.
I can't forget that.
I sang to him?
Not "a miner."
"A minor."
These aren't words, they're music notes.
Half a frequency.
I must have left this
for myself to decipher,
but why would I send
myself half a frequency?
Unless
Did you record any music
coming from the black hole?
- Yes, our Uhura logged it
- Computer?
Translate musical notes
from Dryk'tee on my mural,
combine with the music from the anomaly.
(musical signal playing)
Computer, run that through
the universal translator.
COMPUTER: We are the midwives.
The baby is breeching.
Stay clear. We are the midwives.
The baby is breeching.
There's a baby inside the anomaly?
CHAPEL: Right, uh, because those sounds
are m-midwives out there.
Inside the black hole.
But-but also somehow
connected to your time.
The white hole.
This isn't just an anomaly.
These are two points
connected through time.
Past and present.
It starts here only to end
One year ago.
I have delivered a lot of babies.
This is a first.
Conceived now to be born in the past?
The pulses.
They're part of the contractions
to push the baby out.
But the baby is in breech,
so the contractions aren't working.
They won't stop. They'll only get worse
- unless we find a way to help.
- Okay, okay. Slow down.
So you're saying that
We have to deliver a space baby.
UHURA: Yeah.
And I think I'm the only one who can.
These drones will be able
to move the space baby.
Do we have to say "space baby"?
CHAPEL: "Space critter"?
KIRK: You know that's worse, right?
I was able to grind up
the dilithium diamond
to give each drone
enough power for this.
CHAPEL: Once launched,
they're programmed to seek out
and attach to the
space bundle of joy?
The drones work in
concert with your gloves.
It's a-a gesture-based system.
It works on feel.
You'll have to turn it out
of breech so it can be born.
I'll feel the space baby?
KIRK: Fine.
"Space baby" it is.
What if there's another
contraction?
CHAPEL: For the record,
I have delivered more babies
than anyone in this room, right?
And I shouldn't be doing this?
It's got to be me,
because my future self has
to be doing the same thing
at the same time for us to save Scotty.
And she will.
She left the music for me to find.
She'll have the same plan.
She's smart that way.
(musical signal)
We're here to help.
We mean the baby no harm.
(device whirring)
Captain, this entire occurrence
is very confusing to witness.
To you and me both.
Once again, can you tell
me why Lieutenant Uhura
is on the saucer section
manually launching probes?
Sorry, Mr. Spock.
Need-to-know.
KIRK: Status.
Three drones entering
the black hole in five,
four, three, two, one.
Contact.
UHURA: Drones secure.
I can't see them,
but scans tell me they're still intact.
Confirmed. The red
lights on your EV screen
will change to green if and
when they make contact with?
Honestly, Spock,
you're better off not knowing.
I am not.
(sighs)
Fine.
It's a, uh
space baby.
UHURA: So far, all lights still red.
Wait. One of them just turned green.
One down.
CHAPEL: Nyota, once they all connect,
you and, hopefully, your
partner should be able to turn the baby.
Okay. You should be able
to use those gloves now.
How does it feel?
(gasps)
Like that is one big
space baby in there.
Fighting but
turning.
That means the drones have been
attached on the other side, too.
Why is it still straining, then?
You're gonna have to do this
next part by feel, okay?
Which side is giving
the most resistance?
Left.
I think.
No, definitely the left.
Push back gently.
Babies know where the exit is.
- Just move slow and steady.
- No.
- Wait. Something's wrong.
- Contraction?
No.
One of the green lights shifted red.
If the baby starts to panic, it just
- Energy buildup inside anomaly.
- Nyota?
Red alert.
SPOCK: There is no way to repair
or reattach drone remotely.
What about not-so-remotely?
(alarm blaring)
Nyota, no.
Scotty would do it to save me.
(gasps)
(panting)
Captain, the energy buildup
inside the anomaly is critical.
Contraction!
Nyota, no.
The thing's going to
(screams)
Scotty.
Pull harder to the left.
(softly): What?
What happened?
Is the space baby safe?
You guys called it a "space baby," too?
Not important.
Are we dead?
Is this where we go
(musical signal)
MIDWIVES: This is not your end,
Nyota Uhura.
We exist outside of linear time.
We saw your ship and
warned you of the danger.
You didn't understand at first,
so we disabled your ship
to keep you from harming the child.
But we also see what
has and will happen.
You will understand us and then help.
The new life will be in
peril until you save it.
What is this new life?
There is no translation
for what they are.
They live in the past,
present and future.
We call them
(musical signal playing)
We do not see life as it happens.
We see before and after and in between.
You do not.
That is why we will now send both of you
back to your respective times.
Only you two will remember
all that has changed.
For it will change back
to what it was before.
And if our paths cross again
We'll know what to do.
Despite how we see time,
you are and always will be
surprising.
(sighs)
Hey. Kid.
One last thing.
You're doing great.
Never stop growing. Okay?
Okay.
Scotty? Erica?
Ah. Right behind you.
For the record,
none of that was my fault.
Well, that could've gone better.
SPOCK: The probe you launched is
reporting back key data, Mr. Scott.
All in all, the mission was a success.
KIRK: Especially since you're
all back safe and sound.
(wolf whistle)
UHURA: Personal log.
Stardate today.
Not tomorrow and not yesterday.
The past is over.
The future hasn't happened yet.
The only moment that's real,
that we actually live in,
is now.
It's the only day that matters.
How you spend it and how you define it.
My future is not all I
think about anymore.
I'm not afraid of it.
I'm lucky to be here in the moment.
To not know what adventure
will come my way every week.
Because
wow, the not knowing is a gift.
And part of that gift for me is,
I'm going to spend this moment
and every moment to
come doing what I love
with the ones I love.
I may not know what the
next few years will bring,
but I know who I want to be with.
My family.
