The Hurricane

1
[piano playing]
[actor 1] Some secrets don't
stay buried, no matter how deep.
[actor 2, on TV] Then we bury them again.
Together this time.
Do you have to wear your Lycra
all the time?
Well, I need to turn up chafed
in all the right areas.
[phone chimes]
[sighs] It's another
"Thinking of you" message.
When's the soonest that we can
pretend to have arrived in America?
I'd say minimum three weeks.
Don't wanna arrive too soon.
Don't wanna set any records
and invite deeper analysis.
[sighs] My entire new friendship group
is based on them supporting me
through this "difficult time."
You know, if they find out
that this is a lie,
then that's it. No more friends.
I'll have to go back to
refreshing the weather app
on my phone to pass the time. [sighs]
Well, let me check
the North Atlantic currents.
If they're favorable, we could pretend to
have done it in two weeks.
[gasps] Oh, good.
The longer it takes, the more likely it is
something's gonna go wrong.
- [sighs]
- Nothing is gonna go wrong, my love.
I've thought of everything.
[sighs]
[doorbell rings]
[tense music playing]
- Who is it?
- [Nikki] It's only me.
And everyone.
Oh, Karen. [sighs]
We heard about the hurricane
in the Atlantic.
Hurricane? What hurricane?
Oh, my God. You haven't heard?
[stammers] There is literally a hurricane
exactly where Scott is right now.
Bang in the middle of the Atlantic.
Oh, dear.
It's a Category 4. Your dad's looking
into what that's out of.
Okay, so it's a five.
But the big question, as always,
is five good or bad?
- It's bad.
- All right, mate.
But, listen, don't worry,
'cause we're here for you.
And we are not going anywhere
until we hear that he's safe.
Oh, you didn't have to come.
You really should have phoned first.
Oh, no.
We were too busy ringing everyone else.
- Everyone el Everyone else, who?
- [Freddy] You're already here.
I brought the wind charts.
I'll set them up in the living room.
- How did you get here so quick?
- Vic drove me.
- Vic?
- Any news?
- [sighs] For God's sake.
- No, none. But we are hopeful. Come on.
Big hurricane, though.
I had to zoom out on the map
and I was on the desktop.
All right. Come here, you.
- Right. Is that everyone now?
- Yes, that's everyone.
[breathes shakily]
[doorbell rings]
- My poor, fatherless Stevie.
- Oh, my God.
I will teach you to change tire!
Well, she's not here, you know.
She's on a playdate.
Be strong.
When you're ready to move on,
I know other man. Better man, strong man.
[chuckling] Not Western man
with their cats and recipes.
You know, Nadya,
you really didn't need to come.
[grunts] I cook for you.
I cook for you some food for the morning.
And don't worry,
we stay as long as it takes.
[breathes shakily]
Oh, shit.
- I brought some chocolate digestives.
- Oh.
You don't think it's too cheery, do you,
under the circumstances?
I could scrape off the chocolate
if you think it's disrespectful?
Oh, no, I think you're okay, Mum.
Just as long as you haven't bought
any pink wafers. [chuckles]
[tense music playing]
Scott? Scott.
Oh, what's going on?
They're saying there's a hurricane
in the Atlantic.
And they won't leave
until they know that you're safe.
Oh, God. They're right. Big one.
Well, how long before it moves on?
It says it'll head North
in three nautical No, four nautical days.
Are nautical days different
from normal days?
- Not really.
- Well, stop saying "nautical" then.
Call them on the satellite phone and
tell them that the hurricane missed you,
and then I can just get rid of them.
[breathes shakily]
You know, it's getting harder and harder
to tell people about our marriage.
- Nikki.
- Mmm?
- Well, I'm very keen to be useful today.
- Uh-huh.
I often worry I'm no help
in these family crises.
[clicks tongue]
Perhaps it's inevitable
that I've adopted a more passive role
next to a woman who's as dominant
as your mother.
[gasps]
[clicks tongue] Sorry, Dad,
I'm not sure what you're asking me.
Oh, just to say, keen to be useful.
Oh.
You need anything, here I am.
All right, John,
will you do us a favor, man?
Will you run some plates out for me
just while I sort this food?
Absolutely, Jason. I'm your man.
[chuckles]
Okay, mate. Yeah, lovely.
[chuckles]
[reporter]
We're tracking Hurricane Oliver,
a powerful storm moving
across the central Atlantic
[tense music playing]
[reporter chattering]
[sighs]
[reporter chattering]
Feels terrible.
Oh, mate, it's dreadful, yeah. Dreadful.
Something like this [scoffs]
Absolute act of God.
[reporter continues in background]
Just out of nowhere.
Nothing anyone could have done.
It's genuinely no one's fault.
You encouraged him, trained him,
and helped him pick out his boat.
Well, I think that's
a very reductive way of looking at it.
- I'll Check the chart.
- Okay, yeah.
All right, John?
Any progress with the plates?
Oh, yes, nothing simpler.
Work of a moment.
Can I, uh, lend you a hand or
No, no, no. All under control.
Okay. Just people are getting hungry now,
mate. So we
Jase, Jase. Just let him do it.
He wants to feel useful.
- Well, I could just do
- Here, take this, please.
- [phone vibrates]
- Oh.
Sorry, it's-it's work.
- I I need to take this.
- [Jason] All right.
Okay, then, John, so Yeah.
[footsteps departing]
Open.
[phone vibrating]
[breathing heavily]
- [exhales]
- [phone chimes]
- Hey.
- Oh, hi. [chuckles]
- Have you been on a motorbike?
- Hmm?
- Your hair.
- No. [chuckles]
I saw you weren't here today,
so I was just checking in.
Oh, yeah. No, no, no.
I'm fine. It's just, um
It's a long story.
Yeah. It's a, uh, bad day to miss though.
- Oh, no, why?
- Guess who finally changed
their pink shirt?
[gasps] Shut up! What?
- He changed it? [chuckles]
- Yeah.
Oh, no. I can't believe I missed that.
This one's yellow.
- Yellow?
- It's, uh, quite the day here.
[giggling] Okay, well, um, who won then?
Let me check the official ledger.
- Hmm.
- Yes, Nikki guessed closest
with 37 consecutive days.
And will receive a free lunch burrito.
- [giggles, exclaims]
- Hey.
- Scott's on the phone.
- [groans] Okay.
You fallen over or something?
Your hair is
Huh? No, just go.
Scott? Hello. You still there?
- I'm-I'm still here. Yes, here I be.
- [hair dryer blowing]
Scott? Are you alive?
[Scott] Hello. Yes, I'm here.
Can you hear me?
No, not totally.
- [clicks]
- How about now?
Uh, yeah, yeah. That's much better.
We all here, Scott.
We've been so worried about you.
We love you, Scott.
Oh, that's That means so much.
It gives it gives me much strength
[stammering] at a time like this.
Scott, we're all here.
And we're really keen to know if you're
uh, if you're okay?
And if you could just reassure everybody,
then they can all just go home.
Yes, well, the wind seems to be
[exclaims]
[screams]
Oh, what was that? Scott! Scott?
- Uh, what's happened, mate?
- Scott? Scott? Scott, hello?
He's gone.
Karen?
Karen?
Oh, God. Karen, are you okay?
Yeah. No. I'm fine. Don't worry about it.
Oh, Karen, I think
I think maybe you're in shock
and I just want you to know that
when it hits you, I'm here for you.
Okay. Well Well, I'll bear that in mind.
She's in denial.
Next it will be anger.
[whispering] What the hell happened?
I dropped the phone. I think I broke it.
I think I got water in it.
It's a phone for a boat.
I know.
I didn't have the protective cover on it.
- Well, why not?
- Because I'm not on a boat!
I'll fix it. It's fine.
[breathes deeply]
Do you have
a very large bag of rice at all?
They think you went overboard.
I have people hugging and praying
for me like it's a telenovela.
And now I have to
pretend to be sad for everyone.
And you know how
I hate displaying emotion.
Hmm. Do you wanna have a little practice?
No. I learned how to fake it as a kid
when my gerbils died.
It's just confusion plus surprise.
[breathes heavily]
[grunts]
Oh, God. That's exhausting.
How does Nikki walk around
like that all day?
Should we just come clean?
No! It's far too embarrassing now.
We'll be social outcasts.
Just fix the phone, call them
and then they will all go home.
Also, I can very clearly smell cooking.
Is there any chance you could rustle me up
a quick snack?
Absolutely zero worries if not.
Okay, look.
He's probably already sent a Mayday
from the boat.
But just in case he hasn't,
we should contact the coast guard.
I've studied the wind charts
and I've calculated
his most likely coordinates.
But what will the coast guard do?
They'll send planes.
They'll divert nearby ships to the area.
- Oh, my God.
- Yeah, look, there might be a little cost
to you down the line,
but I'm assuming Scott's got insurance.
[stammering] You sure about all this?
This is a Category 4 hurricane.
Potential catastrophic loss of life.
- His life could be in danger, Karen.
- Oh, yes.
Yes, no.
Definitely.
- Right, will you give me the number?
- Yeah. Here.
[reporter] Here along the coast,
officials are urging people
to keep their distance from the shoreline.
Conditions offshore are extreme
I don't think Karen's
expecting you to clean, Nadya.
If there is no body, we bury photo.
Right.
Crack on then. [sighs]
1-1-9-9-9.
[line ringing]
[exhales]
[gasps]
- Hello. Is that the coast guard?
- [sighs]
Oh, I'm-I'm well, thank you. And you?
- Oh.
- [breathes shakily]
Well, the thing is,
my husband is rowing the Atlantic.
- [whispers] Location.
- Uh, can you hang on.
The location is 4-6 South, 2-8-7 West.
Right where the hurricane is.
I know. Exactly.
It's an absolute nightmare.
Anyway, we were wondering
if you could send a search party?
- [whispers] That's good. Search party.
- Mm-hmm.
[whispers] He's just gonna check.
Uh-huh. Oh, that is great.
You're sending one.
- [exhales]
- You think he's probably fine
and perhaps his phone just got wet?
Oh, that's interesting.
Oh, you are a very nice man.
Thank you very, very much. Bye-bye.
- Well?
- Yeah. It's fine.
- Oh.
- They're on it.
Well, he said it's actually
more common than you think
and that everyone should just go home
and-and try and get some sleep.
[breathes deeply]
[gentle music playing]
What is this? Is-Is this breakfast?
No.
[speaking Russian]
- Lovely.
- 'Cause you said "morning food".
I thought, like, bacon, eggs
Mourning food for when you're in mourning.
We don't know he's died.
But it is pickled.
So it will keep until we do.
- No, don't say that.
- Mmm.
[news anchor chattering]
[Vic scoffs]
[Princess sighs]
Why aren't there any plates?
I don't have an answer for that as yet.
But you're asking all the right questions.
Oh, John, could you get some scissors
from the drawer in the kitchen?
I'm marking out search areas with string.
Of course! Quick as a wink. [chuckles]
We getting them plates and all, Jo
[gentle music playing]
[news anchor continues on TV]
How you getting on? Are you all right?
Yeah, fine. Why wouldn't I be?
Good.
She's been a bit touchy recently.
Yeah, well, you were hard work at her age.
Oh, yeah?
Well, from what your mother told me.
- How are you? How's work?
- Terrible.
Impeccable reviews online.
The customer base is expanding every week.
We're growing too quickly.
I'm not fixing things anymore.
All I do now is manage people.
When I was at Tillsons,
I went to see my manager three times.
Once when I got the job,
and once when I retired.
Second time, I forgot my keys.
- I had to go back.
- Aye.
Right. So there's not enough beds
for everyone.
And I've just checked the sofas online
- and they cost £6,000 each.
- Really?
So we can't sleep on them.
I'm not totally sure we should
be sitting on them, if I'm honest.
I'll go and check in the garage to see
if he's got any camping gear left over
from that, um, tent business thing
that he started.
Did you ever get our money back from that?
Now's not the time to ask, is it?
- No. No.
- No.
[Princess] Wow. So much stuff.
He did all of this?
Oh, no. Guys, guys.
He's recorded a Christmas album.
- [Princess] Look at him.
- All right. He's got it on vinyl, CD
- and minidisc.
- Oh, my God.
- He's inventing his own language.
- [Jason] Here's his board game. Look.
- "Scott Free."
- [Jason] Yeah.
"Board game for anti-capitalists."
"Silence of the Lambadas.
A folk horror musical."
[Princess] Ooh.
"Gentleman's evening poncho."
- Scott parfum? Anyone?
- [Princess] Oh?
Ugh. Now, look.
Lord, it looks like he's run
for some sort of public office here.
He can't be bribed,
'cause he's got independent wealth.
- So Right.
- Right.
"WoodScott. A community festival
for a post-money world."
Honestly, the things that he's dreamed up.
What a life.
Bless him.
Oh, yeah, there we go.
Camping gear. Sleeping bags.
Never got our money back on that either.
[chuckles]
[Scott] Well, obviously,
as you can see, um,
things didn't go according to plan.
Um And I'm sorry.
I am sorry
for putting you through all this.
[Nikki] Oh, Scott.
Shit.
Scott, no!
- [Scott] Just know that, uh, I am sorry.
- [Karen] What's this?
Freddy found it on Scott's computer.
He wanted to record a message in case
Well, in case he didn't make it.
Oh.
- [clicks]
- If you are listening to this, I died.
Either that or you've stolen my laptop.
A-And if the latter is true and
you subsequently hear that I have died,
could you please forward this file
to karen.filbert@icloud.com?
[softly] Give me strength.
[Scott] Okay, here's a personal fave.
["Jingle Bell Rock" playing]
Oh. Thank you.
Mmm.
[clicks tongue] How we doing?
Uh
I'm hanging in there.
It's all very scary, isn't it?
- Look, Nikki Hmm.
- Yeah?
I know I know you want me to cry,
but I just don't see the point.
- But
- No, no, I-I get it.
If you were an armadillo or a chipmunk,
you have to make a noise
to let the other chipmunks know
that you're scared or you're sad.
But I'm not a chipmunk,
I'm a human.
No, we have language.
You know, I can look at someone
and say, "I'm scared."
So if I'm scared, I'll look at you
and I say, "Nikki, I am scared."
Until then, I'm fine
- okay?
- Okay.
Right.
[music continues]
- [drill whirs]
- I'm getting it.
Anyone wanting plates?
Well, no, mate. It's all finished.
The spread's The spread's gone.
[music ends]
Bowls then?
Mugs? Glasses? [grunts]
Very happy to fetch them.
Princess, Tyler, you okay for cups?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Huh.
Well, uh, it's no problem.
["The Christmas Song" playing]
I really miss him.
[clicks tongue]
I was jealous of him in a way.
He was just so
positive.
- [chuckles]
- Hmm.
[chuckling]
Do you remember the pommel horse phase?
Six months of lessons and he still had
the crash mats out for a leg swing.
[chuckles]
Yeah, that Olympic tattoo was a punt.
[all chuckle]
When I got cast in my school's nativity,
he bought me
Stanislavski's An Actor Prepares.
And I was playing a bush.
Just believed in himself, didn't he?
He believed in all of us.
He's just a very special person.
People like that, they're not very often
What are you doing?
[whispers] They're playing
my Christmas album.
[whispers] They're gonna see you.
This house is 80% glass.
Get off the stairs!
I'm just listening to what they're saying.
You're supposed to be fixing the phone!
Oh, um, I nearly forgot.
Uh, good news, all fixed.
Well, why are you
not upstairs calling them?
Just waiting for Jason to say something.
Oh, for God's sake. Go, go!
My face is cramping.
Okay.
[Freddy] I just hope he knew
how many lives he touched.
[breathes shakily]
Please just ask them
not to play the songs out of order.
An album is a story.
[exclaiming]
[sighs]
[sighs]
- We're remembering Scott.
- Oh.
- Oh.
- [Princess] Grandad?
I liked his
trousers.
- Not all of them.
- Okay.
Did you ever see
the dance routines he did with Stevie?
What? No. [chuckles]
Oh, they're really good.
[Nikki chuckles]
Stop. That's so cute. [chuckles]
Yeah, they were a lot less cute
until I told him to include Stevie.
- [chuckles]
- [Nikki chuckles]
He was such a good dad.
- Yeah.
- [chuckles] Yeah.
You know,
he literally took voice coaching lessons,
so he could do
all the voices in their bedtime stories.
- [Nikki clicks tongue] Aw.
- [Karen chuckles]
And the number of times I found
the meat thermometer in the bathroom,
'cause he wanted to get
Stevie's bath temperature just right.
[chuckles]
[music ends]
[phone ringing]
- It's Scott!
- [gasps] Oh, my God!
- [gasps] Oh, wow.
- Oh, my God.
- Oh, my God. Answer it.
- Oh, yeah.
Okay.
- Scott, is that you?
- Yes, I'm here.
Are you still alive?
[hair dryer whirring]
Scott, we're all still here.
We're-We're just talking about
how much we love you.
- [hair dryer whirring]
- Oh, well that-that is so nice.
Is Jason there?
I didn't I couldn't hear him.
- I'm here, mate. Yeah, yeah.
- Oh, sorry,
I didn't mean to interrupt you if you
were in the middle of saying something.
Me? No, mate, no, nothing. No.
It's just the clouds are starting
to get quite black.
So So now's definitely the time
to say anything you need to say.
[emotional music playing]
- [whispers] Go on.
- [stammers]
- Jason?
- [whispers] Say something.
Uh [exhales]
We all miss you.
And we all love you, mate. Okay?
Well, that's very kind, Jason.
Thank you.
[exhales]
Things are actually, uh, starting to-to
look a bit clearer and the sky's looking
- more blue Oh, God!
- [thuds]
- [screams] Oh, my God!
- Scott!
Oh! What was that? Was that a scream?
- [line disconnects]
- He's gone. He's gone. He's gone.
- He's really gone this time.
- [sighs]
[grunts]
[gasps] Oh, my God.
[panting] God, what's happened?
- I slipped.
- What?
Everything's really dark.
[stammers] Scott.
- No, no. Scott. [breathing shakily]
- [sighs]
Come on, Scott, wake up.
Help!
Help!
- Oh, my God.
- What? What's that?
Oh, God.
Nikki. [breathing heavily] Nikki!
Oh, my God. It's Scott. He's in trouble.
- Oh. It's finally hit her.
- Mm-hmm.
No, help. He's really hurt.
[breathing shakily]
Nikki! I'm scared!
- Oh, okay.
- [Jason] Oh.
[gasps] Scott?
- What?
- Scott, is that you?
Yes. Well, obviously it's him!
What is happening?
He's hit his head. Will somebody
please just call an ambulance?
- Yeah, on it.
- No, he's concussed.
You need to make him go to sleep.
Hey, Mum, that's not what you should do.
It's okay, Scott. You're gonna be okay.
Wow.
Your calculations were way off, mate.
[gentle music playing]
In a couple of days,
you and I are gonna have a little chat.
[stammers]
[Jason] So
So, he's got a mild concussion.
So they wanna keep him in overnight
for observation.
But, uh, he's gonna be fine.
[sighing]
[pop music playing]
[sighs]
- Oh.
- [chuckling]
[music continues]
[music ends]
