- Hey, Sarah.
- SARAH: Hey, Mark, Rex.
So what do we have?
Jacob Kaufman, megarich
investor out of Toronto. His
He and his wife Andrea
rented a yacht for the week.
Here on vacation?
No, it was business and pleasure.
His partner, Veronica
Goodwyn, was on the boat too.
Cause of death?
He was shot by a spear gun.
- Okay.
- From the angle of penetration,
the shooter could have been anywhere
between five-foot

That's half the people in town.
We have the murder weapon?
Forensics searched the yacht

bottom around the boat

Any motives so far?

it could be robbery.

Looks like he rarely took it off.

Hmm.

Kaufman's wife and partner
have been moved to the Meridian Hotel.
The yacht's captain, Michelle Sirocco,
was on board as well as two deckhands,
Carly Nelson and Blaine Sennitt.
- Okay, I'll talk to them.

about what happened earlier today.
Sure. You know, in my
time, I've been through a lot.
But a murder on my boat?
- Never.
- How long have you known
the victim, Jake Kaufman?
Less than a week.
They chartered Best
Kind through the agency.
But I've got to tell you
rude to his business partner
and his wife, obnoxious
to me and my crew.
Awful.
Did you see anything at
the time of the murder?
No, I was in the bridge
teaching Carly how to work the sonar.
How about the other deckhand?
Blaine was in the galley cutting fruit.
You know, when I went
downstairs, he disappeared.
And that's when I heard
Kaufman's wife screaming.
- Yeah.
- [REX SNIFFING]

I mean, I've only done this a while
but most of the people were pretty nice.
Mister Kaufman was rude.
And he kept hitting on me,
even in front of his wife.
That must have made you mad.
You're asking if I killed him?
No, I didn't.
It wouldn't even cross my mind.
- What about Blaine?
- No!
Blaine's a good guy.
What about the other people in the boat?
Do you think any one of them
could have hated Kaufman
enough to kill him?
His wife, Andrea, seems nice.
But Kaufman treated her pretty badly.
He also treated his
partner, Veronica, badly too.
It's like he enjoyed hurting people.
I don't think you'd have to
look far to find someone who hated him.
I know this can't be easy
but I have to ask you some questions.
Excuse me.
I understand.
People we've spoken to say
that your husband could be
difficult.
I always told people it was insecurity.
But there was more to it.
He was a different man
behind closed doors.
We found a way to make things work.
Can you tell me what happened
in the hours before the murder?
There was a business
meeting with a man named
Endicott who wanted them to
invest in his software product.
But Jake said he wouldn't do it.
That made Endicott angry?
More crushed.
But once Jake's made
up his mind about something,
it was impossible to change it.
It wasn't easy.
Can you think of any other
motives to kill your husband?
I understand that a watch
may have gone missing.
They just gave me his
effects and it wasn't there.
He always wore that watch.
The captain said it wasn't
anywhere on the yacht.
And it was expensive?
It was a fake!
Maybe a few hundred dollars.
A gold Canaveri reproduction.
But it meant a lot to him.
And when he came into real money,
he held on to the reproduction
for sentimental reasons.
This is the case.
It was by the bed.
He only ever took the
watch off to sleep.
It's mahogany with
a deerskin suede liner.
One of a kind.
Can I borrow this?
Of course.
[REX SNIFFS]
SARAH: It wasn't just
his wife he domineered.
Any one of them could have
hated him enough to kill him.
He humiliated everyone
on the yacht, Best Kind.
They seem to be the only
ones with opportunity.
In the meantime, the only
concrete motive we've got
is a stolen wristwatch.
JESSE: Yeah. According to his wife,
it's a reproduction of a gold
1966 Canaveri diving watch.
Andrea says that Kaufman only
took it off when he slept.
But when he did, he put it in this case.
Mahogany with a deerskin liner.
A very distinctive item with
a very distinctive smell.
SARAH: That would be
transferred to the watch.
I'm hoping that Rex is going to
be able to figure out who took it.
- [REX BARKS]
- DONOVAN: Meanwhile,
the missing deckhand
is our best suspect.
Have you had any luck doing
a deep dive on Blaine Sennitt?
Uh, well, did some facial
recognition on him.
And it turns out,
that Blaine Sennitt is
actually Blaine Selby.
Has a record for
break and enter and burglary.
Four years ago, after he got
out of prison for his last offence,
he flew off the radar.
Keeping his nose clean?
Or maybe he's just better
at not getting caught.
Well, maybe not this time.
Look at this.
Okay, here is Best
Kind just after lunch.
Now there,
there is the man from the
business meeting, James Endicott
leaving the boat.
Okay, and if we go to here,
that is Kaufman's business
partner, Veronica Goodwyn
leaving the boat thirty minutes later.
I keep going. Then
There, you see it?
That is Blayne Sennitt
running off the boat.
Look back here.
When he exits,
that's an hour after
James Endicott left the boat
and a few minutes before
Kaufman's wife found the body.
MARK: So, Blaine takes him down a drink,
kills him, steals the watch
and then waits an hour
before running away?
Hey, but here's what I don't understand.
If Kaufman was killed with a spear gun
and the boat doesn't carry one,
then where did it come from?
I ran surveillance of
Blaine coming into work
- but he didn't have it with him.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
Hold on. Oh, guys.
Forensics results just came in.
As expected, Kaufman
was killed by the spear.
The only thing is, the
spear was coated in seawater.
The combination of sea salt
and ocean bacteria confirms it.
Well, isn't that natural?
Well, scuba equipment would
be cleaned after use, right?
The salt would corrode the metal.
JESSE: Okay, maybe Blaine hid
it in the water on another day, and then
pulled the spear out
when he wanted to use it?
Well, that's a lot of
planning for a petty thief.
Do we have an address on Blaine?

for the last few years.

I don't kill them for it.
Okay.

[BLAINE SIGHS]

I had brought him a drink earlier

And then I went back up.
I put together a fruit
plate because the captain told me to
and then when I went back down

that's when I saw him.
He was pinned like a bug in

I knew you'd find my real
name in my records, so I ran.

[MARK SIGHS]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
VERONICA: Yes. You could definitely say
that Jake was a
difficult person to like.
I saw him bully partners,
dominate his wife,
brutalize servers in restaurants.
He made an art out of
making people hate him.
And what was your role
in the partnership?
I brought the expertise
in tech ventures.
He brought the money. And
the money is always the boss.
But half the time, he didn't even bother
to read the fundamentals
on the companies.
Now this meeting yesterday,
before Kaufman was murdered,
was with one of those companies?
Endicott's product is revolutionary
but Jake elected to lead
him along for a few meetings
and then humiliate him.
Would that have made Endicott
angry enough to take revenge?
He's a software engineer.
He's not a killer.
He'll find others to invest.
Can you think of anyone else
who disliked Kaufman
enough to want to kill him?
Honestly?
The way he treated his wife?
I would have done it years ago.
[JESSE SIGHS]
Hey.
You look like your
brain might be melting.
Yeah, my brain is melting.
We have this yacht, right?
And this guy was killed on it.
- That is correct.
- And I have searched
the security cam for the entire time
that Kaufman has rented Best Kind.
And Blaine shows up on the boat
every single day empty handed.
So where does that leave us?
What if somebody came
onto the boat another way?
Wouldn't we have seen that?
Not if they came up through the water.
And that could be why the
spear was coated in saltwater.
[REX BARKS]
What is it, Rex?
What did you see, pal?
I'll rewind to where he barked.
Okay. Here's the back of the boat
about fifteen minutes before Blaine
said he saw the body and ran.
This is where Rex barked.
Look at that.
See?
It's as if something's
disturbing the water
at the back of the boat.
- Rex, Jesse, you guys
- No, wait for it.
- [REX WHINES]
- Wait for it.
There's that same angle
five minutes after that.
Look at that.
Well, that could be the killer
leaving the boat five minutes
before Blaine found the body.
Okay, so where did they come from?
I mean, I said I've got questions.
I don't have the answers yet.
[REX BARKS]
What did you see, pal?
Could be alluding to the tour boat.
See, look at it.
It's parked at the mouth of the marina.
And nobody gets on or
off. Why stop there?
Yeah, there it is.
It just stays there for
ten minutes after the ripples,
picks up anchor and then cruises away.
Can you make out who's at the helm?
No, no can do.
The footage is too rough
for any further enhancement.
So what you're saying is you think
someone could have got off
the side of the tour boat
away from the surveillance cameras,
swung to Best Kind, climbed
aboard, killed Kaufman
and then gone back into the water?
Yeah, I know. I'm basing this whole
theory off of things I can't see.
Can you get the registration
of that tour boat?
Because now I love your theory.
- I think we chase this down.
- Yeah, I'm on it.
Meanwhile, I'm going to
go visit that software engineer,
James Endicott, and see
if a business deal gone bad
might be something worth killing for.
Rex, come on, let's go.
[REX SNIFFS]
Find it.
ENDICOTT: Detective.
Mr. Endicott.
I'm sorry to hear about Jake Kaufman.
Yeah, I understand your
relationship was not great.
Well, he strung me
along for three meetings,
but still, you feel
it when somebody dies.
What happened with your deal?
So I've created a
revolutionary AI software
that can write whatever
computer program you need.
- [REX SNIFFS]
- Let's say your company needs
an accounting software.
Bingo. You put in a few prompts
and MyAI spits out the software.
Let's say your company
needs a program to control
the widget factory.
Waterfront AI
creates a widget factory app
that costs you next to nothing.
I mean, normally, it would
take rooms full of programmers
to code this kind of thing.
Why didn't Kaufman invest?
Oh. Who knows why or why not
Jake Kaufman would do anything.
Mmm.
I must say though, I could have
used that 150 million dollars.
Oh, that's a lot of money.
His pulling out must
have been a setback.
Not enough to kill him, if
that's what you're asking.
I believe in my product, Detective.
There will be other investors
who believe in it too.
There are a lot of people who can
afford to invest that much money?
Oh, yeah, yeah. In the tech world,

- MARK: Let's go, bud.
SARAH: Wait. And
how about the boat owner?
Well, I checked his story.
He did visit a sick relative
up in Musgrave Harbour
and has 10 witnesses.
Still, why that boat?
And how did the killer
know that it would be free?
Yeah, that's a good question.
I will do a deep dive into the owner.
In the meantime, I've been
looking into Kaufman's finances.
Thought it'd be a simple paper trail.
You know, the wife inherits everything,
making her the perfect suspect.
I sense a but coming up.
JESSE: I couldn't find any finances.
What, you're saying he's broke?
No, I'm saying his money must be hidden
quite possibly in
cryptocurrency, untraceable.
So, if stealing Kaufman's
money is the motive,
they'd be looking to
access his crypto accounts.
JESSE: Exactly. But you
need a key to access the account.
It's most likely a 64digit
hexadecimal access code.
Kaufman's business partner
said he was a Luddite.
He doesn't seem like he
was the kind of person
who would remember a
long complicated password.
Which means he hid it somewhere.
Somewhere he'd keep close 24/7
and maybe in something that
everyone was trying to obtain.
JESSE AND SARAH: Kaufman's watch.
MARK: Where better to hide
hundreds of millions of dollars
than having it engraved inside something
that never leaves your
wrist except when you sleep.
SARAH: Now the question is,
did the person who stole the watch
know the real value of
what they were stealing?
And if they did, who could have known
about the crypto code hidden inside it?
JESSE: Kaufman was
technologically averse
but his business
partner was all over it.
I think Veronica Goodwyn
might be worth another visit.
[REX BARKS]
SARAH: She should still be at the hotel.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
MARK: Remember, Rex.
We find the watch, we find the killer.
VERONICA: You said you have questions?
MARK: Money might be the
motive for Jake Kaufman's murder
but we haven't been
able to track his funds.
Now, we believe he might have
hidden it in cryptocurrency.
Do you know anything about that?
Of course. I helped arrange it.
Jake was useless with tech.
I even had to set up cell
phones for him and Andrea.
Did you know that he had his crypto key
engraved inside the back
of the watch he always wore?
No. I always wondered
where he kept the key.
It makes sense though.
He never took it off.
And then I told him when he
gets his code, keep it safe
and to never tell anyone what it is.
Do you know anyone he might have told?
He never trusted anyone
with all the information,
although Andrea may have known.
I never fully understood
their relationship.
How about James Endicott,
the software developer
looking for funding?
I thought the deckhand killed Jake.
Endicott wasn't even on the
boat when the murder happened.
Well, we're investigating
a number of avenues.
[REX SNIFFING]
You know what, Detective? I don't think
there's anything else
I can do to help you.
Jake made a lot of enemies
and he did it for
years before I met him.
Sometimes I even thought that
he should be watching
his back in his own home.
Oh, you mean his wife, Andrea?
It's just a feeling.
He always treated her badly.
But during those last few
meetings with James Endicott,
I thought there might be
something between them.
Her and Endicott?
You're saying you think
she was having an affair?
I don't know.
I shouldn't have said anything.
What do we have?
The forensics report came back
on the spear gun used to kill Kaufman.
It had Penny's prints
on it but nobody else's.
That still doesn't explain why
the killer chose Penny's boat.
JESSE: No. But guess what I found out.
Bill Penny doesn't just
operate a tour boat.
He's also the cousin of James
Endicott, the software engineer.
SARAH: And someone who would
have known about the family emergency
in Musgrave Harbour.
We'll pick up Endicott, see
what he has to say for himself.
Oh, by the way,
can you find a connection between
Endicott and Kaufman's wife?
JESSE: Okay. I have a question.
Is this one of those cases
where there are far too many suspects?
Because I want you guys
to know I hate those cases.
We all do. Let's take
one of them off the table.
[REX BARKS]
Yeah. What he said.
[REX GROWLS]

[REX BARKS]
James Endicott, SJPD!
We're here to question you
in the death of Jake Kaufman!
[REX SNIFFS]
[REX WHINES]
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
SARAH: From the temperature of the body,
I'd estimate he was killed
less than a couple of hours ago.
So, even if Endicott killed Kaufman,
he probably wasn't working alone.
But if he was a part of
the murder, why kill him?
Alive, he might have
been becoming a liability.
As of now, he's a dead end.
Speaking of dead ends,
since Blaine couldn't have been
involved in Endicott's murder,
his lawyer just got him released.
Oh, great.
Another potential
suspect out on the street.
And we haven't had a hit on
the watch at Blaine's apartment
or Veronica's hotel room
or even here at Endicott's office.
Just a thought.
Do you think you might be
becoming a bit watch obsessed?
Someone has that watch.
Someone else is ready to kill for it.
Jesse, can you take
another look at Endicott?
Veronica said that he might
be connected to Kaufman's wife.
Well, she might be right.
I've been going through
Endicott's text messages.
There's one from Andrea Kaufman
sent a couple minutes after
Endicott left the meeting.
[REX WHINES]
- What?
- Yeah. She says:
"The timing is good."
I'm not sure what that means.
But it could be an invitation
for Endicott to move in on Kaufman.
SARAH: So what do we think?
- That she set up the murder?
- MARK: Maybe.
And if she did, she'd probably
kill Endicott to silence him.
I'll bring her in.
[REX BARKS]
ANDREA: I told you I don't
know who killed my husband.
How well did you know James Endicott?
Oh, not at all.
He was on the yacht a few times
but I didn't really
spend any time with him.
Yeah.
See, that's interesting because we
have a text message from you to him,
an hour before the murder
saying that the timing was good.
I didn't text James Endicott.
I told you I barely knew him.
And timing for what?
Are you saying that I told
him to come and kill Jake?
No, that's crazy!
He was a difficult husband,
but I would never hurt him.
Why would I do it?
Much of your husband's wealth
was converted to crypto.
And the key to that money
might have been hidden inside his watch.
So, that's why he kept it so close.
So, you didn't know?
Jake controlled the finances.
He didn't tell me anything.
I did not know where he kept his money.
And even now, I don't care.
Maybe it's for the best.
I was really young when I married Jake.
And I spent a lot of time
making excuses for him,
even to myself.
I did not text James Endicott.
And I did not kill my husband.
You have to believe me.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
JESSE: Get this.
Endicott's business computer
showed a classic data pipeline.
Meaning, Waterfront AI isn't an AI.
And James Endicott was
fooling investors into thinking
that his AI platform could
write computer software
without using any programmers.
You're saying it doesn't work?
JESSE: I'm saying
the whole thing's a scam!
I mean, you put in a request
to Waterfront AI,
it then gets forwarded
all the way to India
where a couple of hundred programmers
get to work writing the code.
Doesn't that defeat the whole
purpose of calling it AI?
Absolutely.
He can maybe fool one investor at a time
but that's not sustainable.
His game had to be getting
investment capital then disappearing
and the investors are
left holding the bag.
So, did Kaufman figure this out?
Is that why he wouldn't
close on the deal?
I don't know. Either that or
it's because Endicott
was hitting on his wife.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I still can't believe that
Kaufman's wife was involved.
She seems
genuine.
Jesse, can you pull up
the history of Andrea's phone?
Yeah.
How does she log in to her phone?
Well Okay.
She either uses a
fingerprint ID or a PIN number. Why?
Well Captain Michelle said
that Veronica was with Andrea
around the time that the
text message was sent.
Did she log in with her fingerprint?
Well, she usually logs in with her
fingerprint but that time
she used a PIN number.
Veronica told us
that neither Kaufman or
his wife understood tech,
that she even had to buy
their phones for them.
At which point Veronica
could have set up the PIN.
DONOVAN: So, you're saying
that Veronica accessed Andrea's phone
and then sent that text
message to incriminate her.
MARK: Think about it.
Veronica is the tech expert.
How would she have missed realizing
that Endicott's company was a scam?
JESSE: She wouldn't
unless she was part of the scam.
So, after Endicott left the boat,
Veronica waited for Andrea to doze off
and then used Andrea's phone to
send a text message to Endicott.
JESSE: Throwing shade
on Andrea and Endicott
in case she needed to
throw suspicion off herself.
MARK: And then when we were
closing in, she killed Endicott.
DONOVAN: Yeah, okay.
But here's the million dollar question.
Where's the watch?
I think we'll find it
where we started off,
with the deckhand.
Blaine Selby.
That's interesting.
MARK: Veronica wanted Endicott
to kill Kaufman and then take the watch
but it was gone by
the time he got there.
Okay, so Blaine didn't kill Kaufman
but he stole the watch.
MARK: And that's why
Veronica trashed Blaine's apartment.
But she didn't find the watch.
Why didn't Rex find it there either?

[SARAH SIGHS] Where does that leave us?
Well, with two suspects who are

DONOVAN: And how can we

doesn't have it already?
SARAH: Well, Carly did say that
Blaine was waiting
around for some reason
but if he took it, why not just run?

Okay. Here's the back of the boat
about fifteen minutes before Blaine
said he saw the body and ran.
This is where Rex barked.
Look at that.
See?
It's as if something's
disturbing the water
at the back of the boat.
- Rex, Jesse, you guys
- No, wait for it.
- [REX WHINES]
- Wait for it.
There's that same angle
five minutes after that.
Look at that.
Well, that could be the killer
leaving the boat five minutes
before Blaine found the body.
Okay, so where did they come from?
I mean, I said I've got questions.
I don't have the answers yet.
[REX BARKS]
What did you see, pal?
Could be alluding to the tour boat.
See, look at it.
It's parked at the mouth of the marina.
And nobody gets on or
off. Why stop there?
Yeah, there it is.
It just stays there for
ten minutes after the ripples,
picks up anchor and then cruises away.
Can you make out who's at the helm?
No, no can do.
The footage is too rough
for any further enhancement.
So what you're saying is you think
someone could have got off
the side of the tour boat
away from the surveillance cameras,
swung to Best Kind, climbed
aboard, killed Kaufman
and then gone back into the water?
Yeah, I know. I'm basing this whole
theory off of things I can't see.
Can you get the registration
of that tour boat?
Because now I love your theory.
- I think we chase this down.
- Yeah, I'm on it.
Meanwhile, I'm going to
go visit that software engineer,
James Endicott, and see
if a business deal gone bad
might be something worth killing for.
Rex, come on, let's go.
[REX SNIFFS]
Find it.
ENDICOTT: Detective.
Mr. Endicott.
I'm sorry to hear about Jake Kaufman.
Yeah, I understand your
relationship was not great.
Well, he strung me
along for three meetings,
but still, you feel
it when somebody dies.
What happened with your deal?
So I've created a
revolutionary AI software
that can write whatever
computer program you need.
- [REX SNIFFS]
- Let's say your company needs
an accounting software.
Bingo. You put in a few prompts
and MyAI spits out the software.
Let's say your company
needs a program to control
the widget factory.
Waterfront AI
creates a widget factory app
that costs you next to nothing.
I mean, normally, it would
take rooms full of programmers
to code this kind of thing.
Why didn't Kaufman invest?
Oh. Who knows why or why not
Jake Kaufman would do anything.
Mmm.
I must say though, I could have
used that 150 million dollars.
Oh, that's a lot of money.
His pulling out must
have been a setback.
Not enough to kill him, if
that's what you're asking.
I believe in my product, Detective.
There will be other investors
who believe in it too.
There are a lot of people who can
afford to invest that much money?
Oh, yeah, yeah. In the tech world,
companies will spend a
fortune to buy technology.
[REX SNIFFS]
Just to, uh
bury it.
Ah, yeah.
Anyway, I thought it was
the deckhand who killed him.
He's one suspect.
You know, I saw
him on the boat a few times.
It's as if Jake took a special
interest in running him down.
He seemed like a good worker.
But I saw the kid react
when Jake yelled at him.
To tell you the truth,
I looked in the galley one time.
And I saw him spit in Jake's drink.
The kid had some anger issues himself.
[PHONE RINGS]
Excuse me.
Jesse.
Hey. I found the
registry on the tour boat.
It's at a marina down by Petty Harbour.
I'm sending you the details.
Okay great, thanks.
Uh Mr. Endicott. Thank you.
We will get back to you
if we have more questions.
Great, you're welcome back,
but bring investors next time.
- [ENDICOTT CHUCKLES]
- Very good.
Let's go.
[SEAGULLS CRYING]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Bill Penny?
Every day.
[DRILL WHIRRING]
Mark Hudson, SJPD.
My partner Rex.
[REX SNIFFS]
I need to ask you a few questions.
Finally, you arrived.
You were expecting me?
Called in a few hours ago.
I was called away yesterday
to go to Musgrave Harbour
to see an old sick aunt.
Comes back today to see
somebody's been on my boat.
They broke the door off of my locker
and they were out on the water with her.
Used half a tank of fuel!
So you weren't here yesterday?
Didn't I just say that?
Whoever it was had her though,
they took good care of her.
She's back safe and sound.
Nobody in the marina
saw the boat go out?
No. Everybody here's gone by dawn
and nobody's back until after dark.
Nobody saw a thing.
- Huh.
- [REX SNIFFING]
What's your friend at?
Well, he's looking for a missing watch.
If it's anywhere within
30 feet, he will find it.
A watch?
That's a funny thing for
a detective to be chasing!
It was taken from
the wrist of a murdered man.
So you're telling me someone
stole my boat to do a killing?
[REX BARKS]
I can tell you you're not going to find
a watch on my boat.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Well, maybe not.
But what you do have
is a murder weapon.
[REX YELPS]
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Sarah. We come bearing gifts.
There was one spear missing
from the tour boat's inventory
and I'm pretty sure it'll be a match
for the one used to kill Kaufman.
- Here.
- MARK: Let's go, bud.
SARAH: Wait. And
how about the boat owner?
Well, I checked his story.
He did visit a sick relative
up in Musgrave Harbour
and has 10 witnesses.
Still, why that boat?
And how did the killer
know that it would be free?
Yeah, that's a good question.
I will do a deep dive into the owner.
In the meantime, I've been
looking into Kaufman's finances.
Thought it'd be a simple paper trail.
You know, the wife inherits everything,
making her the perfect suspect.
I sense a but coming up.
JESSE: I couldn't find any finances.
What, you're saying he's broke?
No, I'm saying his money must be hidden
quite possibly in
cryptocurrency, untraceable.
So, if stealing Kaufman's
money is the motive,
they'd be looking to
access his crypto accounts.
JESSE: Exactly. But you
need a key to access the account.
It's most likely a 64digit
hexadecimal access code.
Kaufman's business partner
said he was a Luddite.
He doesn't seem like he
was the kind of person
who would remember a
long complicated password.
Which means he hid it somewhere.
Somewhere he'd keep close 24/7
and maybe in something that
everyone was trying to obtain.
JESSE AND SARAH: Kaufman's watch.
MARK: Where better to hide
hundreds of millions of dollars
than having it engraved inside something
that never leaves your
wrist except when you sleep.
SARAH: Now the question is,
did the person who stole the watch
know the real value of
what they were stealing?
And if they did, who could have known
about the crypto code hidden inside it?
JESSE: Kaufman was
technologically averse
but his business
partner was all over it.
I think Veronica Goodwyn
might be worth another visit.
[REX BARKS]
SARAH: She should still be at the hotel.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
MARK: Remember, Rex.
We find the watch, we find the killer.
VERONICA: You said you have questions?
MARK: Money might be the
motive for Jake Kaufman's murder
but we haven't been
able to track his funds.
Now, we believe he might have
hidden it in cryptocurrency.
Do you know anything about that?
Of course. I helped arrange it.
Jake was useless with tech.
I even had to set up cell
phones for him and Andrea.
Did you know that he had his crypto key
engraved inside the back
of the watch he always wore?
No. I always wondered
where he kept the key.
It makes sense though.
He never took it off.
And then I told him when he
gets his code, keep it safe
and to never tell anyone what it is.
Do you know anyone he might have told?
He never trusted anyone
with all the information,
although Andrea may have known.
I never fully understood
their relationship.
How about James Endicott,
the software developer
looking for funding?
I thought the deckhand killed Jake.
Endicott wasn't even on the
boat when the murder happened.
Well, we're investigating
a number of avenues.
[REX SNIFFING]
You know what, Detective? I don't think
there's anything else
I can do to help you.
Jake made a lot of enemies
and he did it for
years before I met him.
Sometimes I even thought that
he should be watching
his back in his own home.
Oh, you mean his wife, Andrea?
It's just a feeling.
He always treated her badly.
But during those last few
meetings with James Endicott,
I thought there might be
something between them.
Her and Endicott?
You're saying you think
she was having an affair?
I don't know.
I shouldn't have said anything.
What do we have?
The forensics report came back
on the spear gun used to kill Kaufman.
It had Penny's prints
on it but nobody else's.
That still doesn't explain why
the killer chose Penny's boat.
JESSE: No. But guess what I found out.
Bill Penny doesn't just
operate a tour boat.
He's also the cousin of James
Endicott, the software engineer.
SARAH: And someone who would
have known about the family emergency
in Musgrave Harbour.
We'll pick up Endicott, see
what he has to say for himself.
Oh, by the way,
can you find a connection between
Endicott and Kaufman's wife?
JESSE: Okay. I have a question.
Is this one of those cases
where there are far too many suspects?
Because I want you guys
to know I hate those cases.
We all do. Let's take
one of them off the table.
[REX BARKS]
Yeah. What he said.
[REX GROWLS]
What is it, buddy?
[REX BARKS]
James Endicott, SJPD!
We're here to question you
in the death of Jake Kaufman!
[REX SNIFFS]
[REX WHINES]
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
SARAH: From the temperature of the body,
I'd estimate he was killed
less than a couple of hours ago.
So, even if Endicott killed Kaufman,
he probably wasn't working alone.
But if he was a part of
the murder, why kill him?
Alive, he might have
been becoming a liability.
As of now, he's a dead end.
Speaking of dead ends,
since Blaine couldn't have been
involved in Endicott's murder,
his lawyer just got him released.
Oh, great.
Another potential
suspect out on the street.
And we haven't had a hit on
the watch at Blaine's apartment
or Veronica's hotel room
or even here at Endicott's office.
Just a thought.
Do you think you might be
becoming a bit watch obsessed?
Someone has that watch.
Someone else is ready to kill for it.
Jesse, can you take
another look at Endicott?
Veronica said that he might
be connected to Kaufman's wife.
Well, she might be right.
I've been going through
Endicott's text messages.
There's one from Andrea Kaufman
sent a couple minutes after
Endicott left the meeting.
[REX WHINES]
- What?
- Yeah. She says:
"The timing is good."
I'm not sure what that means.
But it could be an invitation
for Endicott to move in on Kaufman.
SARAH: So what do we think?
- That she set up the murder?
- MARK: Maybe.
And if she did, she'd probably
kill Endicott to silence him.
I'll bring her in.
[REX BARKS]
ANDREA: I told you I don't
know who killed my husband.
How well did you know James Endicott?
Oh, not at all.
He was on the yacht a few times
but I didn't really
spend any time with him.
Yeah.
See, that's interesting because we
have a text message from you to him,
an hour before the murder
saying that the timing was good.
I didn't text James Endicott.
I told you I barely knew him.
And timing for what?
Are you saying that I told
him to come and kill Jake?
No, that's crazy!
He was a difficult husband,
but I would never hurt him.
Why would I do it?
Much of your husband's wealth
was converted to crypto.
And the key to that money
might have been hidden inside his watch.
So, that's why he kept it so close.
So, you didn't know?
Jake controlled the finances.
He didn't tell me anything.
I did not know where he kept his money.
And even now, I don't care.
Maybe it's for the best.
I was really young when I married Jake.
And I spent a lot of time
making excuses for him,
even to myself.
I did not text James Endicott.
And I did not kill my husband.
You have to believe me.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
JESSE: Get this.
Endicott's business computer
showed a classic data pipeline.
Meaning, Waterfront AI isn't an AI.
And James Endicott was
fooling investors into thinking
that his AI platform could
write computer software
without using any programmers.
You're saying it doesn't work?
JESSE: I'm saying
the whole thing's a scam!
I mean, you put in a request
to Waterfront AI,
it then gets forwarded
all the way to India
where a couple of hundred programmers
get to work writing the code.
Doesn't that defeat the whole
purpose of calling it AI?
Absolutely.
He can maybe fool one investor at a time
but that's not sustainable.
His game had to be getting
investment capital then disappearing
and the investors are
left holding the bag.
So, did Kaufman figure this out?
Is that why he wouldn't
close on the deal?
I don't know. Either that or
it's because Endicott
was hitting on his wife.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I still can't believe that
Kaufman's wife was involved.
She seems
genuine.
Jesse, can you pull up
the history of Andrea's phone?
Yeah.
How does she log in to her phone?
Well Okay.
She either uses a
fingerprint ID or a PIN number. Why?
Well Captain Michelle said
that Veronica was with Andrea
around the time that the
text message was sent.
Did she log in with her fingerprint?
Well, she usually logs in with her
fingerprint but that time
she used a PIN number.
Veronica told us
that neither Kaufman or
his wife understood tech,
that she even had to buy
their phones for them.
At which point Veronica
could have set up the PIN.
DONOVAN: So, you're saying
that Veronica accessed Andrea's phone
and then sent that text
message to incriminate her.
MARK: Think about it.
Veronica is the tech expert.
How would she have missed realizing
that Endicott's company was a scam?
JESSE: She wouldn't
unless she was part of the scam.
So, after Endicott left the boat,
Veronica waited for Andrea to doze off
and then used Andrea's phone to
send a text message to Endicott.
JESSE: Throwing shade
on Andrea and Endicott
in case she needed to
throw suspicion off herself.
MARK: And then when we were
closing in, she killed Endicott.
DONOVAN: Yeah, okay.
But here's the million dollar question.
Where's the watch?
I think we'll find it
where we started off,
with the deckhand.
Blaine Selby.
That's interesting.
MARK: Veronica wanted Endicott
to kill Kaufman and then take the watch
but it was gone by
the time he got there.
Okay, so Blaine didn't kill Kaufman
but he stole the watch.
MARK: And that's why
Veronica trashed Blaine's apartment.
But she didn't find the watch.
Why didn't Rex find it there either?
[REX GRUMBLES]
Well, I think we need to
find the answer to that fast.
If Blaine has the watch,
he's next on the hit list.
Blaine Selby? SJPD again.
[REX SNIFFING]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX GROWLS]
Okay.
Huh.
Yeah. [MARK CLICKS TONGUE] Come on.
Good work.
Jesse.
Blaine's in the wind.
I need you and Sarah
to pick up Carly Nelson.
I think Blaine and Carly
are in this thing together.
I didn't do anything!
SARAH: Oh, we'd like
to believe you Carly
but you haven't been
fully honest with us.
I told you I didn't know
anything about the murder!
You didn't tell us about
your relationship with Blaine.
We found this in Blaine's apartment.
[CARLY SIGHS]
He gave it to me a couple of weeks ago.
He said it was our
one month anniversary.
I didn't tell anyone.
Captain Michelle doesn't allow
fraternizing among the crew.
You knew where Blaine
was after the murder
and you didn't tell us!
I wanted to believe him
when he said he just ran
because he saw the body.
Yeah, I asked him if it
was about Kaufman's watch.
He wouldn't say.
But I knew.
- That he had the watch?
- Or that he knew where it is.
So, will he be contacting
you when he gets it?
We're done.
I didn't want to be a part of
whatever it was he was doing.
I told him that I found
out that it was a fake
and there was something
valuable inside it.
He seemed surprised
but even more determined
to get it when he could.
But I wasn't involved.
It's like I told Ms. Goodwyn.
Hold on.
You told Veronica that
Blaine had the watch?
She asked me flat out.
She knew about me and
Blaine being together.
And she told me what was in the watch.
Do you know where Blaine is now?
He wanted to go away.
But I felt like he was waiting
until he could get the watch.
[SARAH SIGHS]
What's your take on Carly?
Do believe her that she wasn't involved?
I do.
I mean, she's broken up about
the relationship with Blaine
but she shut him down when
she found out about the theft.
Well, Veronica's in the wind too.
She didn't even check out of her hotel.
She just disappeared.
[SARAH SIGHS] Where does that leave us?
Well, with two suspects who are
still searching for the watch.
DONOVAN: And how can we
be sure that one of them
doesn't have it already?
SARAH: Well, Carly did say that
Blaine was waiting
around for some reason
but if he took it, why not just run?
Maybe because of where it was hidden?
DONOVAN: Well, where does one hide
an expensive-looking watch
and hope that it'll be
there when you come back?
Carly said that he
couldn't go back right away.
Maybe because it was a crime scene.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Now we have seen
Blaine running away from the marina.
But what if the watch didn't?
DONOVAN: What, you
think it's on the boat?
It was already searched.
MARK: Our best bet is
letting Blaine lead us to it.
He'll go back to the boat.
We just have to make sure
we get to him before Veronica does.
Otherwise, we're going to have
another homicide on our hands.
[MARK CLICKS TONGUE]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[SEAGULL CRYING]
I can't believe it was there all along.
Ms. Goodwyn.
- Hello, Blaine.
- Uh, I just
I forgot some stuff here
and I was just coming back for it.
I'm sure you did. Open the bag.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
I swear to you,
I didn't kill him.
- [MARK COCKS GUN]
- I don't need details!
Give me the watch.
Let him finish.
I'm all about the details.
Stay where you are.
So, what's your play now, Veronica?
You going to kill us
for what's on that watch?
I've already killed for it.
I needed to get away from Kaufman.
I knew where Kaufman's money was.
And when it looked like the
deal wasn't going to happen,
I already had a plan with Endicott
to take the money by more direct means.
- Meaning Endicott would kill him.
- Mmm.
But why kill Endicott?
He used his cousin's boat
to sneak onto the yacht.
It was only a matter of time
before you caught up with him.
Now, I am going to get out of here
and I would advise you not to follow me.
Okay, you can't think
you're going to get away.
Detective.
- I'm already gone.
- Ughh!
[REX BARKS]
[VERONICA CRIES OUT]
Way to go, Rex!
JESSE: You know, I've got to say,
I'm impressed with Veronica's planning.
I mean, her terrible,
murderous planning.
Well, I spoke to the Crown
attorney and she assured me
that she'll have several years
to work on any future plans.
What about Kaufman's widow?
Well, Kaufman's watch and
the fortune inside it are hers
so, I guess she'll figure it out.
SARAH: Huh, I bet she will.
- [REX YELPS]
- MARK: Oh yeah. You'll have to excuse us.
I think Rex would like
to say his goodbyes.
- [REX WHINES]
- Rex?
CAPTAIN MICHELLE: Welcome back, Rex!
- Hey, Detective.
- MARK: Hey, Captain Michelle.
Boat's released. You're clear to depart.
You know, that's one for the books.
We'll never forget that charter.
Yeah, I think we'll
all remember this one.
- Yeah.
- Hope you have better luck
- with your next crew.
- Trust me.
- It's always a challenge.
- I bet.
Speaking of, I want to
thank you for your help
- in taking down Veronica Goodwyn.
- Of course.
Not many people would
engage with an armed killer.
You know, not many people are
faced with pirates in the Red Sea.
But that's part of
the business, isn't it?
So, you're a captain,
now a crime fighter.
Is there anything that you can't do?
Well, now that you mentioned it
I'm not entirely sure I can
get your partner off my boat.
Sorry about that.
- He looks kind of good up there.
- Yeah.
- He can stay.
- [REX BARKS]
[SOFT MUSIC]
[CLOSING THEME MUSIC]
