Hudson and Rex (2019) s08e04 Episode Script

Of All the Gin Joints

[SOFT MUSIC]
Okay, well, I think I found a problem.
The ground wire's come
loose from the harness.
JESSE: You know,
this is not how I expected
- to spend my morning off, Mark.
- Yeah.
I owe you a coffee.
Better be a fancy coffee.
What does the phone say?
Well, right now,
it doesn't say anything.
Let's see.
Oh, here we go. Okay, it
says we need a rivet tool.
And we need to use it
to make a new connection
on the mainframe.
- [REX BARKS]
- Are you sure about this?
Internet doesn't lie.
What if you don't have a rivet tool?
[REX BARKS]
Rex. Can you leave it
to the professionals, please?
[REX WHINES]
You want to tie him up
and throw him in the trunk?
[REX GROANS]
Okay, Jesse. Hit it.
[ENGINE STARTING]
I think we know who
the real professionals are.
All right! High five.
[SOARING MUSIC]
JADEN: Ah!
Here's the old man.
Jaden.
You know Dad hates being called old.
WILHELM: I'll speak for myself, Allen.
And you might stick to
correcting your own mistakes.
[JADEN CHUCKLES]
Help yourself, son.
5:00 somewhere, right?
Yeah, should be in the
Devereaux family crest.
Now where's your sister?
I can't abide tardiness.
Should really try to hit the gym, Dad.
It's great for anxiety.
Ah, says the fitness guru.
Ten minutes late isn't
really late in the real world.
WILHELM: Melanie, if you
were still in the guest house
in the job I gave you, we wouldn't
be having this conversation.
And I wouldn't have a life!
[MELANIE LAUGHS]
All right, what's with this
emergency anyway?
I have a business to run.
Something to do with these, maybe.
There's one for each of us.
- It's an invitation.
- To a surprise gin tasting.
And I expect you all to be there.
No excuses.
No exceptions.
ALLEN: Wait.
You're opening up a new expression?
Don't you think as head of marketing,
- I should have known about this?
- Well, if he didn't tell the CFO,
- why would he tell you?
- Wait a minute, Dad.
- You're making a new gin?
- Oh!
A little behind on the time, huh, sis?
It happens when you bail
on your whole family.
Quiet!
All of you.
Wouldn't be a surprise
if I told you all about it
now would it?
And gin is just the excuse
for tomorrow's gathering.
I'm about to make a big announcement.
Something that will affect you all.
To Devereaux Gin!
[LIVELY MUSIC]
Crying over the books again!
And I heard things were looking up.
Uh
Yeah, the, uh, the fumes
from the vat get to me.
And the salt air.
Mmm. Well, let's just
hope you're not sobbing
when you read my next review.
ALLEN: Hey, Jaden.
Is that Simone Sawyer?
- What is she doing here?
- No idea.
Okay, where the hell is Dad?
I don't know.
Okay, look, let's just
get this tasting over with
and then find out what the
old geezer has to proclaim.
I haven't seen him in hours.
Typical.
[JADEN SIGHS]
I guess I've got to clean
things up, as per usual.
Thank you.
Uh, hello, everyone!
[JADEN CHUCKLES]
[DINGS ON GLASS]
Uh, good evening and welcome
to Devereaux Distillery.
And on behalf of my
father and my siblings
And don't you forget about me!
Oh, and how can we forget our
master distiller, Grant McGovern?
As hard as we may try.
[JADEN AND OTHERS LAUGH]
But please, without further ado,
this gin will not taste itself.
Now grab another glass.
And follow me.
[CROWD MURMURING]
This way into the distilling room.
Okay, everyone, keep coming.
Please, please, please watch your step.
Beautiful.
All right, we're going all
the way in the back here.
[WOMAN GASPS]
- [DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
- What is it?
[CROWD MURMURING]
Is that blood? Oh my God!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
ALLEN: Dad?
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[UPBEAT THEME MUSIC]
[INTRIGUING MUSIC]
- Good morning, Jesse.
- JESSE: Mark.
Give me the rundown. What have we got?
Okay, well, Wilhelm Devereaux
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
Patriarch of Devereaux
distillery found dead.
Family run business.
- Word is, he was a bit of a tyrant.
- Okay.
And there was some kind of function?
Yeah. It was a surprise tasting party
for this new blend they have coming out.
Most of the guests have been
interviewed and released.
- Anyone see anything of interest?
- Mm-mmm.
But all said that Wilhelm was expected
- to make some big grand announcement.
- Regarding?
No one had any idea.
He's got three grown children.
They all figured it was supposed
to affect them in some way.
So, we're holding them and the
master distiller to be interviewed.
Okay, great, you want to split
them up after I look at the scene?
Yeah, yeah. Sarah's in the distillation
room doing preliminaries.
Devereaux Distillery.
- What do they make, whisky?
- Gin, exclusively.
They've made an excellent
product for decades.
Traditional, pine forward,
yet zesty and crisp.
You really know your gin.
I read the back of the bottle.
Sarah, walk me through it.
What do you know so far?
Blunt force trauma to
the back of the head
and shattered glass here on the floor.
It appears a full bottle
of gin was the weapon.
Okay, so someone struck
him from behind, here.
But judging by the blood
smears on the floor
He was then dragged to the vat
where he was shoved in head first.
I'll know more after the autopsy.
I'll be able to confirm
cause and time of death.
[REX SNIFFING]
Looks like the Devereaux's aren't
the only ones with a nose for gin.
What is Rex up to?
I don't know.
[REX SNIFFING]
Jesse said that the party
was for a new recipe.
Send word when you've
cleared out of here.
I want to see what Rex can pick up
- when he's got the scene to himself, okay?
- Okay, will do.
Here, Rex. Let's go.
JADEN: I have no idea what
my father was set to announce, okay?
He said he wanted it to be a surprise.
Was that unusual behaviour
for your father, Jaden?
No behaviour is unusual for my father.
He's a self made man.
You know, trusted his
gut, and acted accordingly.
And you? You work
here at the distillery?
I'm the CFO, the chief
financial officer.
I run the business side of things.
Do you think your father's announcement
- might have been about the business?
- [JADEN LAUGHS] What else?
That's all my father cared about,
was Devereaux Gin.
And the family, of course.
JESSE: Willhelm was supposed
to make an announcement.
Did you know about this?
GRANT: I had no idea what was coming.
I worked for that man for 30 years.
I gave up trying to
understand him decades ago.
Do you think he might have been
retiring, selling the business?
Bah! Wilhelm?
Sell?
He'd rather die than
give it to anyone else,
including those kids of his, eh?
No.
Whatever he was planning to say,
must have had something to
do with that hipster swill
he was going to befoul
the company name with.
So you weren't involved in
developing the new recipe?
Out with the old guard, I guess.
Yeah.
- [LIQUID POURING]
- Always together in spirit.
To Wilhelm!
[INTRIGUING MUSIC]
[MELANIE CRYING]
MARK: Oh.
- Here you go.
- I had no idea what my dad
was planning to announce.
I didn't even know there was a
new gin until I got the invite.
So, you don't work at the company?
No, not anymore.
I left a couple months ago.
Started my own business.
- A rival gin?
- God forbid.
- [REX MOANS]
- All natural skincare products.
Locally sourced.
Why the big change?
Dad just had me doing desk work.
It was time to make my mark
and I hoped Island
Aesthetics would do just that.
JESSE: You had no idea what
the announcement was about?
Yeah.
I was hoping Dad was
announcing his retirement.
Handing the ring to us kids.
Let us make him proud.
- So, you're sales and marketing here?
- Yeah, yeah yeah.
Up against the large producers every day
for distribution, shelf
space, foreign markets.
- That must be a battle.
- And one I intend to win.
I would do everything in my power
to honour my father's legacy
and keep this distillery alive.
I owe it to him.
[REX SNIFFS]
Sarah said he was hit
with a full bottle of gin.
I guess it must have evaporated.
Okay, Rex. You've got
the place to yourself now.
- Show me what we missed.
- [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX BARKS]
What is it, pal?
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX BARKS]
Mark! What are you guys doing up there?
Rex picked up a scent
in the distillery room.
The murderer could have
got gin on his shoes
and then came back out here.
Then climbed up there?
Apparently.
MARK: It's somebody's suit jacket.
Allen, you, uh, recognise this?
No, no no. I don't think so.
MARK: Oh.
Yeah, that's kind of
strange because your, uh,
your invite's in the pocket.
ALLEN: Dad got me to
fill a couple of bottles
of the new expression
to give to the press for review.
I spilled some and didn't
want to stink of gin all day.
So, you hid your jacket
in some old barrels?
You never met my father.
He could freak out
over the smallest thing.
Is that what happened?
He was angry with you?
So, you retaliated?
Are you suggesting
that I drowned my father
in a vat of his own gin?
How could I do a thing like that?
Well, you live with him.
Work for him. I mean,
he's a difficult man.
Could be a bit of a pressure cooker.
I admired my father more than anyone.
And I can't
I can't believe what happened to him.
Inviting Simone Sawyer
must have been some kind of curse.
Uh, should I know that name?
The world-renowned spirits critic.
One good review from her
and it could launch a gin worldwide.
No amount of advertising
I'd buy could compare.
But you're surprised
that Sawyer was there?
Shocked
would be the better word.
Let's just say,
we have history.
She hated my father.
[KNOCKING ON DOOR]
[DOOR OPENING]
Sorry to interrupt.
Your lawyer, I presume?
LAWYER: One of many
on a Devereaux retainer.
We'll be leaving now.
MARK: Before you go, Allen, um
I'm not buying your jacket story.
If you're involved in this,
you should tell us now.
To the contrary, Detective.
This interview is over.
So, you think Allen knows
more than he's saying?
I would bet money on it.
Let's keep digging,
see what this announcement was about.
Meanwhile, can you look into a
spirits critic who was at the party?
Yeah. Yeah, Simone Sawyer.
She left before the body was discovered.
So, before police arrived?
Yeah, she hasn't been interviewed.
- Find her.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
Any connection to Devereaux.
Allen said there was bad blood.
Sarah has the path results.
I'll be back.
[JESSE SIGHS]
Time of death was at least
an hour after he was found.
Blunt force trauma was evident
but it wasn't the cause of death.
So, the blow to the
head didn't kill him?
No. No occipital
fracture, no brain bleed.
Looks like Devereaux did
in fact, drown in his own gin.
So, he was alive when someone
dragged him across the floor
and submerged his head in a vat. Cold.
- Decisive.
- Well, but the attack may have begun
with pure rage. I mean,
from a profiling perspective
it is multilayered.
And I found something else of interest.
Wilhelm was suffering from
congestive heart failure.
Along with the gin, there
was a significant buildup
of fluid in his lungs.
You're saying he
didn't have much time to live?
Months. A year maybe.
I'll contact his physician.
See if Wilhelm was even
aware of his prognosis.
That makes you wonder
who else might have known
and why you would kill a man
who was on his way out already.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
DONOVAN: I saw the path report.
The deceased didn't have long to live?
Sarah's checking with
Wilhelm's physician
to see if he was aware of the fact.
Oh, maybe that had something
to do with his announcement,
him selling the business.
Passing it on to his kids.
- Retiring.
- No one interviewed believes
he'd ever give up the company.
Yeah, well maybe someone
made that decision for him.
Hey, I tracked that info on
Simone Sawyer, the spirits critic.
Turns out she has a long history
of giving Devereaux
Gin terrible reviews.
She compared Grant
McGovern's traditional blend
to paint thinner with hints
of artificial Christmas tree.
Wow.
So the question is,
why would Devereaux even bother
inviting her to his gin tasting?
Yeah, that's going to
be my first question.
Come on, Rex.
[SEAGULLS CRYING]
Mind me asking how you
ended up at the party?
I have no idea why Devereaux
invited me to the tasting
or what he was going to announce.
We weren't exactly close.
After the terrible reviews
you've given his gin in the past?
In my humble opinion,
Devereaux Distillery has
always been all talk, no gimlet.
Until now, that is.
Well, how's that?
The new expression is excellent.
Top of its class.
And with my effusive review,
it will take the
international market by storm.
You seem pretty sure of that.
What makes the new gin so special?
Now that is another mystery.
See, all gin is just vodka
with a series of botanicals added in.
So citrus, herbs, spices.
But it's exactly what you add
that makes a good gin excellent.
So, what was added?
That's the million dollar question.
I can't quite define the singular note
at the back of the palate.
It's something unusual,
distinct
and distinctly unlike anything
that Devereaux's
so-called master distiller
could ever brew up.
You mean Grant McGovern?
You don't think that he was involved
in developing the new recipe?
No. According to
rumour, totally shut out.
So, my guess is that
Wilhelm was going to announce
out with the old, in with the new.
And as we both know, Grant
is as old and as stale
as a martini with no olive.
Ah.
Got to take this.
Thank you.
Sarah, what have you got?
Yeah, Devereaux's
physician got back to me.
She said she told Wilhelm about
his failing heart only a week ago.
Did she know if he was
planning to tell anyone?
Yeah, his estate lawyer.
Said he was making significant
changes to his will.
Have Jesse track that.
See if Wilhelm was
going to follow through.
- Okay, will do.
- And check in on Melanie Devereaux.
She had a falling out
with her father recently.
Might have been worried she
was being cut from his will.
Okay.
Thanks, Sarah.
MELANIE: I was told this morning
by both the estate
lawyer and the doctor.
So, you didn't know about
your father's diagnosis
or his plans to change his will?
My father always pledged
to leave the company
to all three of us.
I just can't believe
he'd renege on that.
But, uh,
you seem to be searching
for something in your father's office.
Are you concerned he made
notes on his final wishes?
If he did, I would want them honoured.
Even if you were cut out?
Melanie, are you sure
you didn't know about any of this
- before his death?
- I told you I didn't.
But you and your father
had a recent falling out.
Excuse me?
Are you implying that
I would harm my father
before he had a chance to disinherit me?
Someone killed your father.
And they may have been motivated
by his sudden intention
to change his will.
All I've ever wanted was for
my father to take me seriously.
Not scoff at every
single one of my ideas.
It was never about the money!
Never!
So, you think that Wilhelm was
going to announce my ouster?
What then? I killed him?
Well, being pushed aside
after all these years,
could make a man snap,
do something rash.
I would never stoop so low.
I am a man of integrity
through and through.
[REX SNIFFING]
What is up with him?
What, does the dog like coffee?
Yeah, I'm not sure
it's java in your mug.
[GRANT LAUGHS]
Rex has got a nose for the new gin.
Tattletale.
[GRANT CHUCKLES]
[REX WHINES]
Well, I have to admire your taste.
The gin is excellent.
[REX WHINES]
I didn't think you were
a fan of the new recipe.
No, that's until I tasted it.
And now I understand why
Wilhelm was so excited.
He said it was going to
change everything.
When did he say all this?
A couple of weeks ago,
when all the secrecy began.
You know, he wouldn't even
tell me what was in it.
It's nothing I'd ever used before.
Singular.
Some kind of
unique botanical.
Simone Sawyer said the same thing.
She's going to give the
new gin a glowing review.
Oh, now it all makes some sense.
- What's that?
- Well, I did not understand
why Wilhelm had invited
her to the tasting.
Even gave her a bottle in advance!
You wondered why he would
risk another bad review.
But if the gin is
excellent, where's the risk?
You don't understand how
critics like Simone work.
Only bad reviews
- are free.
- And good ones?
Yeah, well
I think my old pal Wilhelm
lowered his standards, and
got out the grease. Huh?
[ELEVATOR PINGS]
So, Melanie claims to have known nothing
about her father's
intention to change his will?
She denies that she feared he
was going to make an announcement
she was being cut out.
Like her brother Allen,
we have no concrete evidence
linking her to the crime.
Maybe Jesse's got something for us.
Apparently, Simone
Sawyer was on the take.
Yeah, so
I've been combing
through security footage
of both the estate and the distillery,
and I found this.
So, here's Simone leaving
the Devereaux house
the day of the tasting party.
Bottle of the new gin in one hand
but what's in her other hand?
- [COMPUTER TRILLS]
- SARAH: An envelope?
Could be the invite.
MARK: Could be cold, hard cash.
Grant was surprised that Wilhelm
would break his principles
and cave to the old payola.
Could be interesting to
find out if and why he did.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly.
[REX BARKS]
Come on, Rex.
Let's go!
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
Hold.
SJPD.
Simone?
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Simone?
[REX SNIFFING]
Envelope full of cash still here.
[REX GROWLS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX BARKING]
Oh no, Simone!
[REX WHIMPERS]
All right, she's alive,
Rex but she needs help.
Go!
[ALARM SOUNDS]
MARK: Doctors think Simone was poisoned
and are not sure when she'll wake up.
The lab is doing a workup of the
Devereaux Gin found at the scene.
They're looking for known toxins.
Okay, well, judging from the label,
it looks like the same bottle Simone
left the Devereaux mansion with.
She'd already sampled
the gin when we met.
She talked about a unique botanical.
Well, so it couldn't
have been poisoned, then.
Plus, there's this.
Hotel surveillance
footage of the hallway
outside of Simone's room.
Okay, here she is, leaving her
hotel room earlier that day
To meet up with me.
Check the time stamp.
Okay, and then
SARAH: Oh, someone's
covering their tracks.
MARK: To break into her
room and poison the open bottle.
Any prints?
Only Simone's, on the bottle
and the envelope of money.
Well, hotel management
is asking all their staff
to check their keycards.
One may have been stolen.
What's the common thread?
What motivated both attacks?
Well, everything leads back to
the announcement. Right?
What Wilhelm was going to say?
MARK: We may have to go
back further than that.
Wilhelm told Grant that the
new ingredient in the gin
changed everything.
Yeah, but nobody seems
to know what it is.
Could that be what the
announcement was about?
Well, it can't hurt to find out.
The lab could isolate it,
but I mean, it would take weeks.
Well, no offence to your department
but there is a quicker way.
Let's put Rex to the test.
MARK: You actually
found a dog-sized bar?
SARAH: It's technically a media console
destined for the police
auction but, you know,
I couldn't resist.
Okay, so the goal,
is to make sure that Rex
can distinguish the different blends.
Well, it looks straightforward
So, each glass contains a different gin?
Yes. And only one contains
the new Devereaux expression.
So, telling it from the rest
means that Rex can pick out
the one secret ingredient.
Exactly.
And here, I'm gonna
I'm going to let you sniff
it right from the bottle.
- [REX SNIFFS]
- Got that?
Okay, Rex.
Time to put your nose to the test.
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX BARKS]
Did he get it? Is he ?
Is he right?
100%.
Wow.
- Good boy!
- SARAH: Yeah!
Rex can definitely isolate
the secret ingredient.
Now, if you could just
tell us what it is,
- that'd be great.
- [REX GRUNTS]
Well, I guess we're going on a hunt!
[MARK CLICKS TONGUE]
Call me if you and Jesse
dig up anything new.
Okay.
[REX SNIFFS]
GRANT: Bah!
He's not going to damage anything.
He's a highly-trained
officer of the law.
[REX SNIFFS]
What is he looking for?
Well, that is exactly what
we're here to find out.
He's on to something.
He's picked up the scent
of the secret ingredient.
[REX YELPS]
What's in there?
Equipment, ingredients.
Things that I barely use
but that I would rather not have broken!
[REX GROWLS]
What have you got there?
The secret ingredient is
some kind of weeds.
But what kind?
I've no idea.
I've never seen this
botanical before in my life.
[REX BARKS]
[HORNS HONKING]
Appreciate it.
Hey, hey, hey. Have you heard from Mark?
Yeah! He thinks Rex may have identified
the secret ingredient in the gin.
I'm headed to the lab
to prepare to analyse it.
I thought pinpointing
the ingredient took weeks.
Well, having a botanical
in hand and identifying it
is way faster than trying to identify
one unknown essential oil mixed
with others in a bottle of gin.
Ah, I'll take your word
for it. Oh, by the way,
I have been doing a deep dive
into the history of artisan gin
and did you know that
juniper flavoured spirits
- date back to the Middle Ages?
- I did not.
Yeah, monks and alchemists,
they experimented with
it for medicinal purposes.
And that eventually led to the gin craze
of the early 17th century
and led to the readily available spirit
being nicknamed Mother's Ruin
which was very popular
amongst the female population.
But now we are in a
brand new gin craze, okay?
And these artisan companies,
they have grown tenfold
over the last ten years.
And the idea is to build this brand
and sell it to these big conglomerates.
You know lock, stock and
two smoking gin barrels.
Doesn't sound like
that was Wilhelm's idea.
He wanted to keep the family
business up and running.
Maybe that's what got him killed.
I still haven't found a connection
between Wilhelm and Simone
but I'll keep digging.
Okay. Sounds good.
Just try not to get too
deep in the juniper weeds.
Could get lost in there.
Its scientific name
is rhododendron groenlandicum.
It's from a plant commonly
known as Labrador tea.
So it grows locally?
All across the island and the Big Land.
First Nations people
discovered it and used it as tea
and then it was later
adopted by European colonists.
Okay, now it's somehow become the
secret ingredient in Devereaux Gin.
But it can also be toxic if consumed in
[SNIFFS] high concentrations.
Toxic enough to leave someone
fighting for their life?
Like Simone Sawyer?
I'll alert the hospital
of the possibility.
And our own lab is still working
on identifying the toxin
in Simone's bottle of gin.
Meanwhile, let's see who knows
about Wilhelm's secret ingredient.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
JADEN: Hold on, someone
tried to kill Simone Sawyer
- with some dried up weeds?
- Well, that's not confirmed.
But the the new ingredient in
your father's gin is Labrador tea
and there's little doubt
the two crimes are connected.
You must have known about this!
Yeah, you were always pressuring Dad
to put out a new artisan gin.
Whooey, marketing gold!
ALLEN: Excuse me for
wanting to follow trends.
You would have sold out
years ago if Dad let you.
What do you ? First of all,
you need to stop with all that.
Hey man, not right now.
Sorry I'm late. There
was a crush at the gym.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
- [REX SNIFFING]
- Whoah, excuse me!
Does your dog think I
have treats or something?
I doubt that's what Rex is looking for.
Do you mind letting him
take a look in your purse?
MELANIE: Yeah. I mean, he already is.
MARK: Rex.
Island Aesthetics Hand Cream.
Made with Labrador tea.
MELANIE: I'm sorry.
You're saying you found
it in Grant McGovern's lab?
Rex did.
And we've confirmed that
the secret ingredient
in your father's new
gin is Labrador tea.
I can't believe it.
Was that your idea, Melanie?
I mean, it seems like a
huge coincidence otherwise
since you're using the botanical, too.
Dad always scoffed
at my ideas. That's
That's why I left the company.
Did you find out that your
father had stolen your idea?
That he was changing his
will and might cut you out?
Look, I had nothing
to do with any of this.
You have to believe me.
I don't care if Dad stole my idea
or was going to take credit for it.
I mean, I just can't believe he
finally heard me you know, like,
saw what I was capable of.
That there was more in me
than he ever acknowledged.
Knowing that means everything to me.
You think she's telling the truth?
Or she's a great liar.
Yeah, well we've met a lot of those.
She had motive. She had opportunity.
Yeah, but the link between her
and Simone is tenuous at best.
We need something stronger.
Someone linked to both attacks.
JESSE: Hey, guys.
Guess what I found on a
Japanese spirits forum?
Jesse's been digging up
info on Devereaux Distillery.
He's been digging hard,
by the looks of it.
Arigato, auto translate.
MARK: What did you learn?
JESSE: Okay, so there's rumours
that a big Japanese mega-distillery
is interested in buying them out.
Hold on, Wilhelm was
thinking of selling?
MARK: Everyone we
interviewed was adamant
that Wilhelm would never sell.
But there's no evidence that he
even knew about the rumoured deal.
So, someone other than
Wilhelm was managing the sale.
Any idea who?
JESSE: Well, I checked the travel
records of our key suspects
and guess who flew to Tokyo
three times in the past year?
[COMPUTER BEEPS]
MARK: Jaden Devereaux.
CFO and eldest son.
Guess who was in the seat beside him?
[COMPUTER BEEPS]
MARK: Simone Sawyer.
Well, maybe that's why she
was going to give the new gin
such a good review. They're
in a deal together.
DONOVAN: Right she promotes, he sells.
And they both make a killing.
And none of it works
with Wilhelm in the way.
Yeah, and with him gone,
why keep Simone around?
Right, as CFO, it's his
job to limit liability
especially if she's
asking for more money
- to keep her silence.
- Yeah, but it's all still conjecture.
We've got nothing we can charge
- Jaden with.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
Sarah's got something.
SARAH: Hey!
I just got the tox screen results
from the gin found in
Simone Sawyer's room.
- Labrador tea?
- Not even close. Tetryzoline.
It's almost tasteless.
Lethal if ingested in sufficient doses
and it's a key ingredient in eye drops.
Jaden Devereaux.
But so do millions of other people.
I mean, he could just claim
that he was being framed.
Yeah.
Yeah, there's a story
there I can't quite read.
I mean, last time, Rex's
nose got us out of a dead end.
Maybe he can again.
There's one scent that
he hasn't tracked down.
None of us saw it but
it was in plain sight.
Okay, ready? Rock, paper, scissors.
You always pick rock.
I should know this.
[REX BARKS]
Jesse, bring up that shot of
the hotel surveillance camera
- being painted out.
- Yeah!
SARAH: I don't get it, Mark. How
is Rex's nose gonna help us with this?
All spray paint is basically
the same chemical makeup, right?
SARAH: Yeah, the most commonly
used are alkyds and acrylics.
And it's an easy test
to find out which one.
And you've got a sample
of the dried paint?
- Of course.
- Hold on.
How is any of this useful?
My money is on Jaden
for both of these crimes.
Now, let's sniff out
the truth and prove it.
[REX BARKS]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Okay, buddy, let's give this a shot.
Go easy. This stuff is powerful.
- [REX SNIFFS]
- Got it?
Go track it.
MELANIE: Excuse me!
If you have any more questions,
you should contact our lawyers.
Yeah, Rex and I just wanted to do
a quick sweep of the house.
MELANIE: Then you can get a warrant.
ALLEN: What do you want?
Get back in the house, Allen.
I thought you might be interested
in finding your father's killer.
MELANIE: Of course we're interested.
But there is a limit.
- You can't just
- ALLEN: It doesn't have to come to this, okay?
- Let me talk to him.
- Al, no.
[REX BARKS]
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX BARKS]
- Is that Jaden's car?
- No, it's mine.
MARK: You sure about this alert, Rex?
[REX SNIFFS]
Black spray paint.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
- Look, I've never seen that before.
- [REX BARKS]
Is this what you used to
cover the surveillance lens
before you poisoned Simone?
No, no, I had nothing to do with Simone.
And what happened with my father
was an accident, all right?
- An accident?
- Al.
Listen, Mel, I can't have
you taking any blame for this.
I'm responsible for my father's death.
[REX BARKS]
Mind if I have a drink?
Hearing all this in
the course of an hour,
I think I'll need it.
Allen told you what happened?
Because you questioned me.
ALLEN: Look, I need to set things right.
Melanie had nothing
to do with any of this.
Explain how your father's
death was an accident.
That afternoon,
before going to the tasting,
I stumbled on my father's
notes for his announcement.
I was here, at the family home,
in my dad's office.
He talked about the exceptional new gin,
how he changed his mind
about so many new things.
I'd given my whole life
to my father and the company.
But he was changing his will.
He was cutting you out and
leaving everything to Melanie.
I tried harder than anyone to please him
while every day he put me down.
Yeah, you must have been very angry.
ALLEN: So I confronted him.
And he said such awful things.
Why? What can I do?
Stop bellyaching!
You've whined since
you were a little boy.
ALLEN: Pushing me.
Just pushing me.
Why don't you show some Devereaux spirit
and do something for a change?
ALLEN: I just snapped.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[GLASS SMASHING]
I was over in a second.
I just lost control.
So, you admit you struck him on purpose?
ALLEN: Yes.
But I swear he was alive
and on the floor when I left.
You didn't call for help?
I know it was wrong,
but I was terrified.
I just hid the gin-soaked jacket
and went back to the party.
I never dreamed he'd get up
and stumble into a vat of gin.
And that's what you assume happened.
ALLEN: How else did he get there?
Then we all went into the
vat room for the tasting
and saw him like that.
I was so shocked.
You have to believe me.
I didn't mean for Dad to die.
But it was all my fault.
[REX WHINES]
Well, I'm not sure it is, Allen.
Not entirely your fault.
What do you mean, Detective?
How could it not be?
Well, because we didn't share all
the forensic evidence with the family.
We know that your father was dragged
- to the vat that he drowned in.
- Dragged?
By who?
So, I was convinced it was Jaden.
But that changed when Melanie
told me you confessed to her
just an hour ago.
What's wrong with that? It's the truth.
Yeah, but, um
I mean, I assume that, uh
Jaden doesn't know about any of this.
No, he's not even home.
MARK: So only the person
who really poisoned Simone
would have the spray paint. And
that same person got the
idea to pin both crimes on you
once you confessed to
killing your father.
Okay, this is insane.
ALLEN: Melanie?
It's ironic.
You had no idea your father was thrilled
with your suggestion for the new gin
when you found him unconscious
on the vat room floor, did you?
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
That he was planning to
leave everything to you?
Or that he didn't have long to live?
[MELANIE GRUNTS]
You just saw an opportunity and took it,
thinking he was going to cut you out.
Did you find out about
Jaden and Simone's dealmaking
after the murder?
Used the eye-drops to point to Jaden
so we'd start looking at him
for your father's murder, too?
These accusations are insane,
and you can't prove any of it.
- [REX YELPS]
- MARK: Uh no. But, uh
Rex can. You mind if
he smells your hands?
[REX GRUNTS]
Whoever put the
spray paint in Allen's car,
- did it in the last hour.
- JADEN: Hey!
I'm home!
[MELANIE BREATHING HEAVILY]
MELANIE: Ughh!
- MARK: Melanie!
- [MELANIE CRIES OUT]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX BARKS]
MELANIE: Ughh!
[REX BARKS]
- Stay away from me, you stupid mutt!
- [REX BARKS]
Up on your feet.
You are under arrest for murder
and attempted murder.
I never tried to kill Simone!
She was just supposed to get sick
and point the finger at Jaden!
Oh, I'm sure she'll appreciate that.
- As will your brother.
- [CUFFS CLASPING]
I was sure it was Jaden who left
Dad like that in the vat room.
And that made it okay
to drown your own father?
He tore me down my whole life.
I thought he was going to humiliate me
in front of everyone. Make fun
of me for trying to break away.
Give it up, Melanie. You're done.
- And Rex is no mutt.
- [REX BARKS]
- [REX BARKS]
- He's my partner.
Let's go, pal.
[DISTANT SIREN WAILING]
DONOVAN: Hey! That's a great job, team!
Allen and Melanie are in custody,
although they're both
lawyered up to the hilt.
SARAH: And I hear Simone's recovering
but she woke up thinking it
was Jaden who poisoned her?
I think that was Melanie's plan.
After finding out
about the Japanese deal,
she saw a way of pointing
suspicion toward Jaden.
Uh-huh. Poisoning
Simone with the eye drops
made him look like the prime suspect
for his father's murder too.
MARK: Then Allen threw a
wrench in it by announcing
that he was going to confess
and Melanie put the
spray paint in his trunk
to frame him for both.
DONOVAN: Oh, what a family.
You know, I'm just glad that
mine enjoys watching the game
- and having a slice of pizza.
- [ALL CHUCKLE]
Well, at least Jaden's
had a change of heart.
He's backing out of the Japanese offer,
keeping Grant on as master distiller
and renaming the new expression
Wilhelm's Blend.
That's nice.
Well, let's have a taste.
- This one's got to be to Rex
- Yeah.
- who has the best nose of all of us.
- [REX GRUNTS]
- To Rex.
- To Rex!
[ALL LAUGH]
ALL: Mmmmm!
- SARAH: Oh, boy!
- Oh, wow!
- That is something!
- MARK: Mmm.
What do you think, Rex?
[REX SNIFFS]
[REX GRUNTS]
[ALL LAUGH]
[CLOSING THEME MUSIC]
