Hudson and Rex (2019) s08e07 Episode Script
Criminal Rex
1
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
- Hey, Mark!
- Hey, Jesse.
- How was Halifax?
- Good!
Nice to see some old friends.
Some great meals.
Funny how this place feels
more like home now though.
You know what?
The rock will grow on you.
Yeah.
So
- How'd it go?
- Good!
Yeah, she she slotted
me in between a power lunch
and writing a brief for a court date.
And then she told me she still loves me.
So, I guess you could say
it's still complicated.
Yeah. That sounds like
the definition of complicated.
Yeah.
So, where is everybody?
Joe's at a conference. Sarah
took Rex for the weekend.
She told me she was going
to be here 20 minutes ago.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
- I got her coffee and donuts.
- Thank you.
- It's a little cold.
Detective Mills.
Uh-huh.
Mmm.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Where'd you find it?
Okay, are forensics on the scene?
Cameras, any cameras?
Okay. You get back
to me with anything you find.
What's going on?
A uniform found Sarah's car abandoned.
Her cell phone and her fob
were in the front seat.
- What about Rex?
- No Rex, no Sarah.
[JESSE SIGHS]
It's weird she would
just walk off like that.
Where the hell did they go?
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SARAH BREATHES HEAVILY]
[SARAH GASPS]
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
What is going on?
- Where's Rex?
- MAN: He's right beside you, Sarah.
[REX MOANS]
He's fine.
We had to convince him
to let us take you.
500 micrograms of medetomidine.
[MAN CHUCKLES]
Who are you?
Well, if it isn't Hudson's girlfriend.
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES] Hey, Hudson!
We've got a friend of yours with us!
SARAH: It's a trap! Stay away!
No, that's not what we rehearsed.
Say goodbye to your
little friend in ten
Nine.
- Eight.
- I'm unarmed.
Easy.
Mankiewicz.
- What do you want from us?
- It's quite simple, really.
I have something very
important I want to do.
And you and Wonderdog just
became my partners in crime.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX GRUNTS]
[REX GROWLS]
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]

[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
JESSE: Okay. There she is.
She came by Merrymeeting Road.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Uhhh
They're cops?
[EERIE MUSIC]
JESSE: Wait a minute, no, no, no, no!
- They shot Rex!
- Look closer.
It's a dart gun.
Okay.
[COMPUTER BEEPS]
- You're right.
- [COMPUTER BEEPS]
Wait a minute, that cop!
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
[COMPUTER BEEPING]
[COMPUTER TRILLING]
Mankiewicz!
Okay, I'll bite. What's a Mankiewicz?
He ran a criminal underground
ring in St. John's for years.
He's supposed to be locked
up in Ontario, I think.
- [COMPUTER TRILLING]
- Oh, geez.
Looks like Mankiewicz broke
out of Kingston two days ago.
I've got to put out an APB.
Command, it's Detective Jesse Mills.
I need to put out an all points bulletin
on escaped convict, Rupert Mankiewicz.
You're going to want to let Ontario know
their escaped prisoner
is here in St. John's.
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
DISPATCHER: Ontario Air
Unit 514 returned to base.
- OFFICER: Oh, you got him?
- DISPATCHER: No,
Mankiewicz was just
spotted in St. John's.
- OFFICER: What?
- DISPATCHER: Ontario's most wanted
has just become
Newfoundland's most wanted.
- OFFICER: Oh, man!
- DISPATCHER: Bring it home.
OFFICER: Copy that, returning home!
DISPATCHER 2: And it gets worse.
He's kidnapped two SJPD officers.
And one of them's a K9.
[OFFICERS EXCLAIM IN DISMAY]
OFFICER: Copy that!
DISPATCHER 3: St.
John's Dispatch Central.
We're scrambling everything we've got.
- Send your identifiers now.
- He's in a police car.
Stolen or replica. Both he and
his accomplice are in uniforms.
Sending images from the
same pinned location.
DISPATCHER 3: Assume Mankiewicz
is armed and dangerous.
Checkpoints for all
highways out of the city.
[SIREN WAILING]
You have permission to spot check boats
trying to exit the harbour.
DISPATCHER 4: Mankiewicz is out there!
- Help us find him!
- OFFICER 3: Yeah, I've seen this movie.
I don't like how it ends.
MARK: I know we've got to do this right.
But every bone in my body wants to
join them out there finding him.
JESSE: Yeah.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Did you say he came through here?
When we met him, he was
on trial for trafficking.
[BUZZER SOUNDS]
Charlie got wind that was extorting his
former protégé from prison.
[DOOR CLOSES]
I'm not interested in
anything you're selling.
I know Boonstra's a hit man.
A lot of people know that.
The right people, at least.
Yeah.
And I also know that
you abducted his daughter
as incentive for him
to do a hit for you.
[GIRL SCREAMS]
[MAN GRUNTS]
I don't know anything about that.
But what I do know,
is that in the ten years he was with me,
no matter what task I threw at him,
he never once
failed to deliver on an assignment.
Not once.
He's that good.
He kidnapped a hitman's daughter?
That's a dangerous game to play.
JESSE: He used the same strategy there.
That's how he broke out.
His people took a guard's kids
in order to force him
to aid in the escape.
- Not afraid to hurt people.
- No, he is not.
I have personal experience.
To get his daughter back,
the hitman was supposed
to kill a witness
set to testify against Mankiewicz.
My job
Pick up, pick up, pick up!
to reach her security detail,
and stop her from coming out.
No, no, no!
No, no, no! Get back!
[GUN COCKS]
Get inside!
[GUN FIRES]
[WOMAN SCREAMS]
- You were shot?
- I was wearing a vest
biBut it still took me down for a week.
Okay, so who is Mankiewicz?
Wow, let's see.
Literally dozens of priors.
Murder, trafficking.
- Counterfeiting
- No, I mean who is he?
What's Mankiewicz's MO?
How does he operate?
Because they may never find
him in the streets, but,
but if we know how he works,
we can predict what he might do next.
Once we figure out what he's after.
Yeah. Okay.
Okay, how does he operate?
I mean with Mankiewicz,
he could be standing
right in front of you.
You would have no
idea what he was up to.
Like, a couple of years back,
around the time we made our
biggest counterfeit operation bust
Mankiewicz was
transferred to our station
because his life was being
threatened in prison.
He's hard to read.
When you think you're
looking at someone who's
defeated and caged, he's
really more like a spider.
Motionless at the centre of
his web of vulnerable people
he's made into henchmen.
- [REX WHINES]
- Waiting for the signal to bite.
[MAN GRUNTING]
[REX BARKING]
[BANGING] CHARLIE: We need
medical attention in here!
[REX BARKING]
Okay, easy.
Your cell didn't open on its own.
Somebody had to disable
the security cameras.
How many people do you have
working for you on the inside?
Enough to get the job done, Detective!
What did you think I was doing in jail?
Twiddling my thumbs? [CUFFS RATTLING]
MAN: Please exit in an orderly fashion!
This won't take long!
But we need everybody out!
CHARLIE: So that's what you're up to.
A gas leak.
How very Ocean's Eleven of you.
You're quick.
Yeah, that was a nice move.
Get yourself beaten up so you
can play the victim card for a transfer.
When you find out about the
bust from your informants
then just put yourself
right where you needed to be.
He manipulated all those moving parts
from within a high security environment.
Wow.
- What are you doing here?
- Whatever it is,
it's not for a walk down memory lane.
I mean, a smart play
would be to disappear.
Why come back to St. John's
where you're so well known?
And why take Sarah and Rex?
[REX GROWLS]
[REX WHINES]
What are you doing with all of this?
I've waited six years
for this moment, Sarah.
You can wait a few more
minutes to find out, okay?
I just want to treasure
this moment where
- I finally get to work with Rex!
- [REX BARKS]
[REX GROWLS]
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
- [REX BARKS AND GROWLS]
- Ever since our last meeting, Rex,
I realized I've been relying
too much on humans for help.
Detective?
You know, you might not be able to help.
But I got a feeling that your dog can.
What do you feed him
to make his coat so shiny?
It's okay, buddy.
CHARLIE: What do you
have planned, Mankiewicz?
MANKIEWICZ: Today, we're going
to learn about secrets together!
If I leave my money with you,
then all my secrets are revealed!
That would make me sad, but,
Rex's nose here,
is going to lead me to my money.
Because that's what friends do!
CHARLIE: Why are you talking like that?
You sound like a kindergarten teacher.
Oh, you see, I've done my research.
- [REX WHINES]
- And I know that aggressive tones
might agitate Rex here.
- [REX WHINES]
- Huh?
Isn't that right, buddy?
[REX BARKING]
How's that research working out for you?
I'd done research about dogs
and their handlers in the military.
But Rex was at a whole other level.
I was just getting my first glimpse
that Rex has a sixth sense about him.
Something sharper than his nose
which is an amazing nose!
Finding the rest of the counterfeit
should be nothing for a
magnificent beast like Rex here.
- [REX SNIFFING]
- [MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
Okay.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFS]
You really are impressive.
- [REX BARKS]
- Good boy, Rex!
It became instantly clear to me
that your talents were being wasted.
Good boy.
Getting thrown away by others.
So, I'm taking your dog with me.
[REX WHINES]
You see, he's the missing piece
to perfecting my counterfeit business.
Because if I can fool Rex,
I can fool anybody.
And he just might make
it out of here alive.
Go on, pal.
[REX MOANS]
It's okay, you know what to do.
Good boy, Rex!
Good boy!
- [REX BARKS]
- [MAN GRUNTS]
- [MEN GRUNTING]
- [REX BARKING]
Hey!
If you have to,
shoot the man! But save that dog!
MANKIEWICZ: I knew I
had to figure you out.
[REX BARKING]
But I didn't have enough
time back then, did I?
Go ahead and gloat. You earned it.
But imagine
[MANKIEWICZ SIGHS] In another world,
we could have been friends.
Maybe even partners.
Might have made a pretty good team.
Let me scratch you behind the
ears one last time, come on.
[REX BARKS]
Wasn't that bad, was it?
Rex!
Hey, bud!
[MANKIEWICZ LAUGHS]
Don't worry! I'm already working on it!
I promise you, one day,
you will be mine, Rex!
[REX BARKS]
I told you before, we
were going to be partners
- and I meant it.
- [REX BARKS]
You're going to love being a bad guy.
It's way more fun.
- [DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
- [REX BARKS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
Air Service Captain:
Detective Robertson!
They're calling for a seven block sweep
around where the officers were abducted.
When you're done in there
clearing the building,
you can hand it off.
You two have had a long day.
OFFICER: No, we'll keep going.
Give us what you got.
Bijou trained with Rex, Captain.
This is kind of personal for us.
DISPATCHER: Copy that.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING] [COMPUTER BEEPS]
JESSE: Okay. I've
ordered a list of names
of anyone that's called
or visited Mankiewicz
in the past few weeks.
Whoever helped him take Sarah and Rex
was likely in touch with him.
Sounds good.
But until we get a
lead from the streets,
is there anything more,
you can tell me about
you know, how his brain works?
Well, he's not just smart.
He researches every crime meticulously
and runs hot and cold, but mostly cold.
Even when things go wrong.
He can turn in a flash.
But just like that,
he's back.
Cold as ice.
CHARLIE: Where is Evelyn?
You know what I'm going to
do when I get out of here?
[CHARLIE SIGHS]
I'm going to go have a steak
at Edward's. You been?
Tell me where Evelyn is.
You know what else I'm going
to do when I get out of here?
Hmm?
I'm going to take a
look at you a little bit.
You're a real interesting fellow.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
So, he threatened Charlie?
So, he's fuelled by revenge.
Could you put together a list of
people he had a grudge against?
- Cops, old partners, rivals.
- Yeah, I'm on it.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Well
Hey, buddy.
Let's get this party started.
[MANKIEWICZ SIGHS]
You wanted an explanation. Well
here it comes.
I spent a lot of time
in the prison library
reading up on the SJPD
and this
magnificent beast.
Articles, news reports,
social media videos.
I came to truly respect Rex here.
He's an athlete.
He's fearless. He's brilliant.
And he's just the type of partner I need
to do what I have to do.
He wouldn't follow your orders.
No.
But he will with you guiding him, right?
So back to the story.
The last time I was put away,
I figured one of my people had squealed.
So I went through the process
of elimination, you might say.
But in the end, I didn't
think I got the right one.
So I kept digging.
It turns out,
the traitor was a partner.
A man I trusted.
Bill Sparks, pull him up.
Bill Sparks financed
my entire operation.
But it turns out,
he got picked up on another deal.
Sold me down the river to save his hide.
- So you're going to kill him?
- Me?
No.
- Rex is.
- [REX WHINES]
- [MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
- [REX WHINES]
- What've you got?
- I just got word from the prison in Ontario.
Mankiewicz had four visitors
in the past two months.
Steven Scholtz, Thomas Reid,
Curtis Murray, and Roman Koniuk.
I'm still working through the list.
Hmm.
Is there a pattern to who
Mankiewicz will work with?
Yeah. People like
the hitman who shot me.
Charlie got his backstory
when he was least expecting to hear it.
I saw you at my place.
I know you're looking for me,
but I need you to back off.
I can't do that. Boonstra.
You chose this life.
I was young and stupid and angry
when they brought me in from the street.
By Mankiewicz.
I hated it.
And it escalated.
Mankiewicz kept pushing
for more and more.
- Yeah.
- And if I told him no, he just
reminded me that I owed him.
And that he could end me.
So he gets them when they're
green and impressionable.
What about this young Curtis Murray?
Let me see.
The visit was two months ago.
Graduated from computer studies.
Wait a minute.
I think we just hit the jackpot.
His brother was one of
Mankiewicz's soldiers.
Very well.
Mankiewicz has obviously
gotten to him as well.
There has to be a reason Mankiewicz
specifically wants Curtis.
What's he done with his
computer studies degree?
[KEYBOARD CLACKING] [COMPUTER TRILLING]
Well, he worked contracts
at a number of high
tech security companies.
See if you can find out what systems
he's worked on and where.
You think we're dealing with a heist.
Mankiewicz could do a heist anywhere.
I think there still has to be
a reason why he came back here
and why he needs Sarah and Rex.
Wait a minute. I found
a phone under Curtis's name.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Tracking it now.
If we're lucky,
if we find Curtis,
we find Sarah and Rex.
Hey.
We're not going to
let them do this, okay?
We're not going to let
them make you a criminal.
You're not some kind of soldier
who just follows orders,
who just does what he's told.
Am I right, Rex?
- That's yours.
- [TOY SQUEAKS]
And you can't come with me today
- so stay home and be good.
- [REX GROANS]
[REX GROWLS]
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
Oh, Rex!
[MUSIC TURNS MELANCHOLY]
[REX WHINES]
Hey hey! What's wrong?
I was talking about when
we told you to stay at home
and you did the right thing,
hmm?
By knowing you had to go out.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[REX GRUNTS]
[REX GROWLS]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[TABLE ITEMS CLATTERING]
SARAH: You very single
mindedly went out,
got the evidence.
You proved a murder nobody
would have even known about
because you listened to your gut.
Not to us.
You always do the
right things in the end.
- CURTIS: They're not usually like this!
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING]
MANKIEWICZ: Okay. They're going
to take their breaks at the right time.
- SARAH: Look behind me.
- MANKIEWICZ: We've waited this long.
Ignore where the guards should be.
Follow the man!
SARAH: You see that?
Right there.
Go.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFING]
MANKIEWICZ: Look.
See, there?
He's taking a smoke break.
CURTIS: Copy that.
MANKIEWICZ: No, he's already
headed back in, so
CURTIS: Okay, okay.
MANKIEWICZ: It's only
another ten minutes
- till the shift change.
- CURTIS: Really?
MANKIEWICZ: All right, we good to go?
CURTIS: All systems are operational.
MANKIEWICZ: Well,
look what we have here!
- This is for Rex.
- [REX WHIMPERS]
State of the art.
Curtis went all out on this.
There's a camera, a microphone,
and a bone conductive headset.
Back to work.
We want to be with
Rex every step of the way.
As you can see,
across the street from us
is Sparks Fish Packing.
You remember Billy Sparks?
He was the guy that ratted me out.
But he used one of his underlings
to do the dirty work and,
it took me a minute to figure that out.
But now Billy knows I'm out.
And Billy knows he's the
next name on my list.
So he's upped his security.
Good company, too.
But Curtis here did some time
in the operation and
was able to access the layout.
The entire system.
So we're going to go in there
and send Billy a little message.
So you expect Rex to just
sneak in there and attack him?
Rex is going to deliver a package.
500 grams of C4.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Billy's about to have a
really bad day at work.
And if I won't to help you
turn Rex into a killer?
You know, I thought you'd ask that.
So, I saved
a couple grams of the C4.
And it's here on Rex's collar.
If Rex does what I want him to do,
we're all going home
in a couple of hours.
SARAH: What if it doesn't work out?
Let's just see what happens
in the next two hours, okay?
Thanks.
[REX GROWLS, BARKS]
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
AIR SERVICE CAPTAIN: SJPD Air Unit 500.
Tip called in from Shea
Heights was a false lead.
OFFICER: Marine Unit 178.
We've also been fielding false tips
for the last couple of hours.
We're definitely being played.
DISPATCHER: Yeah, we've
been chasing a lot of those.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
[JESSE SIGHS]
JESSE: Hey, anything?
I checked out Curtis's
apartment. It was cleaned out.
Mankiewicz knew we'd ID Curtis.
He just wasted an hour of our time.
I've got a fix on Curtis's phone
but it just it doesn't make any sense.
Okay. Here's the location where
Sarah and Rex were kidnapped.
Now, the route goes
along Cornwall, then up Columbus
but then it starts meandering.
It was stopping and moving
at irregular intervals
until it finally just stopped.
I've sent two patrols there
who have clear eyes on the street.
But nobody matches Curtis.
Well, he knew we'd be on
to Curtis and the phone.
He dumped it in another vehicle.
Something that would be on the
move to keep us busy.
So what's our next move?
Any opening Mankiewicz gives us
is designed to waste our time.
We can't play his game.
Did you dig up a list of enemies?
Nobody stands out as having a beef
that he'd come back to kill for.
Nobody we know about
but I think figuring that out
is how we get our partners back.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
MANKIEWICZ: Okay.
So this whole area here
does exactly what the sign says.
Processes over a ton a day.
But over here
Well, this is where the action is.
Sparks's private offices.
Protected by guards and alarms.
Normally it would take an
army to get through but,
well, we've got Rex here.
But first,
we have to get past
the perimeter guards.
But that shouldn't be a problem
for you, buddy, right?
Stealth and surveillance.
That's your kind of thing.
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
[INDISTINCT BAR CHATTER]
[REX BARKS]
Huh?
You can be a ghost when you want to be.
[REX BARKS]
Right, boy. So now, once we
get in past the guard station,
then our next challenge is the corridor.
This is where it gets interesting.
This is where we're going to run into
the laser security system.
Imagine how happy I was to read
that Rex has been through
something like this before.
You remember that one, buddy?
[REX BARKS]
How do you know all this?
MANKIEWICZ: Prison library, baby.
Policemen's National
Digest April, five years ago.
Our man is famous.
It's the identical laser
system used by M&B.
Armed and impenetrable to anyone
in theory.
The smartest minds
and tripwire alarms up against you.
And I've got to confess.
I would have made the
same mistake they did.
But I did not know dogs
sense infrared lasers!
I can imagine how a dog ducks
under a horizontal beam.
But I'd love to know how
you beat the diagonals.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
It should have been impossible,
but you did it, partner.
- [REX BARKS]
- You did it.
[MANKIEWICZ SIGHS]
Okay. But once inside,
we've got to get to the vent on the wall
adjoining the offices.
You've done this before.
I read about a case
where you guys had to get inside a
sealed lab at Cooper-Weiss.
Sealed, of course,
except for a way through the vents.
A hidden route.
That's the kind of thing
Rex knows how to use.
SARAH: Wait no, hold on. No.
Rex didn't just know how to use vents.
That was a dangerous operation.
He had to train for that.
All right.
But tell me how they prepared
my boy Rex here the first time.
Well, first of all, they were off site.
So, they had to improvise.
RENLEY: We've got
three lengths of carpet
to exactly match the lengths
of the venting system
leading to the lab.
He needs to associate
this precise distance with crawling low.
- CHARLIE: Good job.
- That's a bit better.
- Good job.
- The next one is the fork in the road.
So you've got to get him
- to go down and to the left.
- Down buddy. Good.
- Good.
- Go to your left, buddy.
- Get him up, Charlie.
- Crawl, pal. Crawl!
- Good. Now get him to do it again.
- Hey, buddy.
- Stay.
- Stay, buddy.
- Now crawl.
- Ready?
- Yeah.
- Focus, boy.
Come on. You've reached
the fork in the road now.
- We're going to go left.
- Here. Here, this way.
- Left left!
- Almost.
We need to go left.
- Yeah.
- Get on him, good.
- Crawl. Crawl!
- Come on. Crawl.
- BOTH: Go!
- That's a bit better.
Because it's test time, people!
We'll see if Rex can
choose left on his own!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
This is the part where
there's a choice to make!
Come on, yeah!
Yeah, you did all right!
MANKIEWICZ: Yeah, he
had to train for it!
And it wasn't easy for him, either!
But nothing worth doing ever is.
Don't worry, son.
It's just like the last time.
You go straight. Then
you turn to the right.
So now,
we're outside of Sparks's office.
Rex drops the package, gets
to the exit, and we're away.
You don't need to do this. I mean
You could just run.
Sarah, it's
it's the principle of the thing.
You know?
You let people who get the
best of you continue living,
well, it sends a bad message.
Then everyone thinks they
can take a shot at you.
I only wish I could have
taught Charlie that before he died.
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
CHARLIE: Oh!
- To be continued.
- [SARAH CHUCKLES]
MANKIEWICZ: Keep your eyes on
the guy with the dark hair.
- CURTIS: I'm on it, boss.
- MANKIEWICZ: Yeah, that one.
- [REX GROWLS]
- CURTIS: You got it.
MANKIEWICZ: Tell me if he
checks in with his team leader.
CURTIS: You got it.
- [HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
- DISPATCHER: Say again, Lorraine!
AIR SERVICE CAPTAIN: Boots on the ground
say the phone in question
was taped under the truck!
Your hunch was right
about Curtis's phone.
A uniform unit found
in a landscaper's truck.
So we know where they aren't.
I'll bet that landscaper drives
this route every Wednesday.
Maybe Mankiewicz chose that
truck and that route for a reason.
To lead us in a different direction
from where he took Sarah and Rex.
It's worth a shot.
Yeah, look!
They were abducted in Mount Pearl.
The landscaper's route winds
consistently northeast.
Is there anyone in
Mankiewicz's enemy list
who's located southwest
of where they were taken?
- I'll look into it.
- Yeah.
Look to see if any potential targets
coincide with companies
where Curtis may have worked
in the last few months.
I suspect he knows we're after him.
And he doesn't have long.
That means
Sarah and Rex might not
have much time either.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX GROWLS]
Hey.
We've been in tough
situations before, right?
When you're stuck, but
you have to hold back.
Remember when we were the ones
who had to wait it out?
[SENSORS BEEPING]
[AIRPLANE ENGINE ROARING]
Everybody hold on!
- [REX WHINES]
- [LOUD CRASH]
SARAH: I don't know how
we were all breathing.
All of us hurt.
And there was no way we could
have gotten out of there.
We were stuck. You were our last hope.
JESSE: Guys! There's no cell service!
Go, go get help!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[EAGLE CRIES]
[EAGLE CRIES]
WOMAN: Hey there, boy.
Are you lost?
SARAH: If you didn't come through, Rex,
I wouldn't have made it.
JESSE: Sarah, come on, wake up. Wake up!
Please!
- No!
- Rex!
- Jesse.
- JESSE: Good boy!
Hey!
Oh, I'm so happy to see you!
[REX WHINES]
You made it all by yourself.
Ah, you're my hero, Rex.
But now is not the time for an attack.
[REX GROWLS]
MANKIEWICZ: Yeah.
Nice and snug.
[REX MOANS]
There you go, buddy.
SARAH: I know you hate
it. So do I, but
Mark and the others know we're missing.
- MANKIEWICZ: All right.
- They'll come for us.
Time's awasting!
This is for you!
Go.
We have to do what he says for now.
Here you go, buddy!
[REX SNIFFS]
- [REX WHINES]
- I know you know what that is, so
Go.
Remember, do the right thing.
[HEROIC MUSIC]
Sarah! Aren't you proud of our
boy going off on this big adventure?
How proud are you?
[MANKIWICZ CHUCKLES]
All right. Let's get the headset.
CURTIS: I'm on it, boss.
I have nothing here.
I have looked through
Mankiewicz's enemy list,
rival organizations, rogue players,
people who moved in after he went away.
No one operates in that direction.
How about his friends then?
- Where are you going with this?
- The witness
- in the trial that brought him down.
- Rose Moore.
Yeah, the file says that she
was a low level money washer.
I mean, she shouldn't have had access
to the inner workings of
Mankiewicz's operation.
You think someone else
gave her that information?
Someone who might profit
from Mankiewicz going away.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER]
Can you hear me?
SARAH: Rex?
- Can you hear me?
- [REX WHINES]
Yeah, okay.
Okay, keep going.
The big doors by the truck.
That's it, that's it, that's great.
[REX WHINES]
MANKIEWICZ: Uh-oh, hold up.
We've got guards at twelve o'clock.
[SENSORS TRILLING]
[SENSORS TRILLING]
[REX WHINES]
Ah, look closely, Rex!
You see them, don't you?
You see the lasers!
So that's how you beat the lasers!
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
My boy was born to do this.
Curtis, make sure you save this feed.
We're going to make him internet famous!
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
He's found the right area.
Now, the vent is halfway down.
Okay, keep walking.
Right, right ahead.
Just a little to the right.
Rex, right beside you.
[REX GRUNTS]
There okay, there.
You have to go inside.
[REX SNIFFS]
What's he doing?
I don't know. I can't tell.
[REX SNIFFS]
- Get him in there.
- No, he's going as fast as he can.
Okay, Rex. Rex, pull off the register.
You have to find a way in.
That's it, that's it.
[METAL CLANKING]
Okay.
Okay, this is like last time.
Slow and steady.
This is just like last time, Rex.
No no, not left. No, back up.
The other way, the other way.
Okay, now straight.
[SARAH SIGHS]
MANKIEWICZ: Fantastic job, my boy.
Just one more thing and we're there!
MARK: The different security
apparatuses Curtis knows,
- they're like seven or eight?
- Mm-hmm.
- Jesse.
- Has Rex got past security systems?
- Sure, yeah.
Cross reference the kind
of systems that Rex got past
with any of those systems
that Curtis worked on.
I think that one of those clients
might be Mankiewicz's target.
MANKIEWICZ: Okay, all right, all right.
Get him closer to the office.
Turn him right at the end of the hall
and we're there.
[REX GROANS]
[REX GRUNTS]
Take him closer to the office.
Please. Please don't do this.
JESSE: Okay. I've got six companies
where Curtis did contract
work on security systems
like the ones that Rex defeated.
Which of them are in the
southwest of the city?
We've got two.
Sullivan's Jewellers
and Sparks Fish Packers.
Why would a fish packing plant
have a high tech security system?
That's a good question.
And Curtis's GPS
timeline in the last month
says he passed by that
operation three times.
That company is owned by Bill Sparks.
But from what I've read,
Sparks is a solid citizen.
Everybody's got secrets.
And some more than others.
Should we scramble a unit?
Not fast enough.
They won't make it in time.
It's just us. Come on. We're on our way!
MANKIEWICZ: I said, take
him closer to the office!
I want to see Sparks! I
want to know he's there.
Please, please don't do this.
Please don't make Rex a killer.
I'll tell you what.
When he drops the package,
I will call in a fire
alarm on the plant side.
And at least let the workers escape.
We can do it my way.
Or you and Rex die too.
Rex, go to the office.
SPARKS: Yes, I know they're waiting.
I told you the shipment is
coming in on the Northern Mist.
The bomb's close enough to
do what I need to do now.
SPARKS: They come in
on Tuesdays and Fridays
and it's mixed in with that catch.
I will have it by the end of the day.
Now how about we talk about payment?
MANKIEWICZ: Tell him to
drop it and get out.
Now! Do it!
Rex, no!
That's my boy! Yes!
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
SARAH: You didn't have to do this.
You're a psychopath!
You're a psychopath!
You think we're not going to find you?
MANKIEWICZ: Maybe someone will find me.
But it ain't going to be you, darling.
And I lied to you.
I would never put a
bomb in Rex's collar.
There's no way I would
hurt that magnificent beast.
Also, I lied about the fire alarm.
I can't risk Sparks getting away.
I'm going to go do the honours.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[METAL SCRAPING AT CUFFS]
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
JESSE: All seems quiet at
Sparks's Fish Packing plant.
I bet he's near.
If Mankiewicz is
planning a hit on Sparks,
he won't be far away.
He'll want to see it with his own eyes.
And that white building looks
like it'd be a good vantage point.
Modern cameras on the wall,
right beside the fish plant.
And it's good security for
a place that looks vacant.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Look there.
There. Northeast corner.
That's him.
Where's Sarah and Rex?
Well, if I'm right and I hope I'm not,
Rex will be in Sparks's plant
doing whatever
Mankiewicz wanted him for.
Sarah will be inside the white building.
Try and avoid the cameras.
I'll take Mankiewicz.
- You go get her.
- All right.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[METAL SCRAPING AT CUFFS]
[CUFFS SNAPPING]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
What's What's happening out there?
Step away, Curtis.
Step away. On the floor, now.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[CURTIS GRUNTS]
[CURTIS GROANS]
- Well!
- [CUFFS RATTLING]
Looks like you had it under control!
Not even close.
[SENSORS TRILLING]
[ALARM SOUNDS]
What the hell is going on?
[ALARM BLARING]
[INDISTINCT CLAMOURING]
MANKIEWICZ: You picked up the bomb!
I really didn't want to do this, buddy.
Hey, Rexy!
We're still friends, right, buddy?
- Hey, pal?
- [REX BARKS]
[MANKIEWICZ GROANS]
- [CUFFS RATTLE]
- So, you're the new guy.
I didn't think you'd figure it out.
I think you underestimated
my partner too.
I'll remember you. [MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
I'll send you a picture for your cell
of both of us.
AIR SERVICE CAPTAIN:
Both officers are safe
and Mankiewicz is in custody!
[OFFICERS CHEERING]
All searching units can stand down!
OFFICER: Copy that. Coming home.
MARK: All right, thank you.
You look pretty relaxed
for someone who spent the day
as a hostage to a homicidal criminal.
SARAH: I'm actually just trying
not to think about it too much.
[SARAH SIGHS] I mean, he would
have killed all those people.
- And not felt a thing.
- [REX WHINES]
I trusted you guys would find us.
And of course, I had Rex to support me.
JESSE: No better backup
in a pinch. I'll tell you.
I just spoke to the prison.
They said they're upping
security on Mankiecwicz.
And hopefully that's the
last we'll see of him, but,
I guess we should never
underestimate his ingenuity.
Or his insanity.
Speaking from recent
experience, I agree with that.
Yeah, plus, I mean, added bonus, Sarah.
You overheard Bill Sparks
talking about a deal
over Rex's audio link.
So Coast Guard was able
to take down the Northern Mist
with a cargo full of his contraband.
MARK: Okay! I think
we can all drink to that.
[SOFT MUSIC]
Oh, and for you, sir.
[REX SNIFFS]
- [REX WHINES]
- Well, okay, they were fresher this morning.
He's just mad they were
out of maple glaze.
Well, I can finish that
if Rex doesn't want it.
- [REX BARKS]
- [MARK CHUCKLES]
JESSE: I had three donuts
for breakfast yesterday.
- I don't care.
- [REX BARKS]
Mm-hmm.
Three donuts for breakfast.
[ALL LAUGH]
[CLOSING THEME MUSIC]
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
- Hey, Mark!
- Hey, Jesse.
- How was Halifax?
- Good!
Nice to see some old friends.
Some great meals.
Funny how this place feels
more like home now though.
You know what?
The rock will grow on you.
Yeah.
So
- How'd it go?
- Good!
Yeah, she she slotted
me in between a power lunch
and writing a brief for a court date.
And then she told me she still loves me.
So, I guess you could say
it's still complicated.
Yeah. That sounds like
the definition of complicated.
Yeah.
So, where is everybody?
Joe's at a conference. Sarah
took Rex for the weekend.
She told me she was going
to be here 20 minutes ago.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
- I got her coffee and donuts.
- Thank you.
- It's a little cold.
Detective Mills.
Uh-huh.
Mmm.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Where'd you find it?
Okay, are forensics on the scene?
Cameras, any cameras?
Okay. You get back
to me with anything you find.
What's going on?
A uniform found Sarah's car abandoned.
Her cell phone and her fob
were in the front seat.
- What about Rex?
- No Rex, no Sarah.
[JESSE SIGHS]
It's weird she would
just walk off like that.
Where the hell did they go?
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SARAH BREATHES HEAVILY]
[SARAH GASPS]
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
What is going on?
- Where's Rex?
- MAN: He's right beside you, Sarah.
[REX MOANS]
He's fine.
We had to convince him
to let us take you.
500 micrograms of medetomidine.
[MAN CHUCKLES]
Who are you?
Well, if it isn't Hudson's girlfriend.
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES] Hey, Hudson!
We've got a friend of yours with us!
SARAH: It's a trap! Stay away!
No, that's not what we rehearsed.
Say goodbye to your
little friend in ten
Nine.
- Eight.
- I'm unarmed.
Easy.
Mankiewicz.
- What do you want from us?
- It's quite simple, really.
I have something very
important I want to do.
And you and Wonderdog just
became my partners in crime.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX GRUNTS]
[REX GROWLS]
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[UPBEAT THEME MUSIC]
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
JESSE: Okay. There she is.
She came by Merrymeeting Road.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Uhhh
They're cops?
[EERIE MUSIC]
JESSE: Wait a minute, no, no, no, no!
- They shot Rex!
- Look closer.
It's a dart gun.
Okay.
[COMPUTER BEEPS]
- You're right.
- [COMPUTER BEEPS]
Wait a minute, that cop!
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
[COMPUTER BEEPING]
[COMPUTER TRILLING]
Mankiewicz!
Okay, I'll bite. What's a Mankiewicz?
He ran a criminal underground
ring in St. John's for years.
He's supposed to be locked
up in Ontario, I think.
- [COMPUTER TRILLING]
- Oh, geez.
Looks like Mankiewicz broke
out of Kingston two days ago.
I've got to put out an APB.
Command, it's Detective Jesse Mills.
I need to put out an all points bulletin
on escaped convict, Rupert Mankiewicz.
You're going to want to let Ontario know
their escaped prisoner
is here in St. John's.
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
DISPATCHER: Ontario Air
Unit 514 returned to base.
- OFFICER: Oh, you got him?
- DISPATCHER: No,
Mankiewicz was just
spotted in St. John's.
- OFFICER: What?
- DISPATCHER: Ontario's most wanted
has just become
Newfoundland's most wanted.
- OFFICER: Oh, man!
- DISPATCHER: Bring it home.
OFFICER: Copy that, returning home!
DISPATCHER 2: And it gets worse.
He's kidnapped two SJPD officers.
And one of them's a K9.
[OFFICERS EXCLAIM IN DISMAY]
OFFICER: Copy that!
DISPATCHER 3: St.
John's Dispatch Central.
We're scrambling everything we've got.
- Send your identifiers now.
- He's in a police car.
Stolen or replica. Both he and
his accomplice are in uniforms.
Sending images from the
same pinned location.
DISPATCHER 3: Assume Mankiewicz
is armed and dangerous.
Checkpoints for all
highways out of the city.
[SIREN WAILING]
You have permission to spot check boats
trying to exit the harbour.
DISPATCHER 4: Mankiewicz is out there!
- Help us find him!
- OFFICER 3: Yeah, I've seen this movie.
I don't like how it ends.
MARK: I know we've got to do this right.
But every bone in my body wants to
join them out there finding him.
JESSE: Yeah.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Did you say he came through here?
When we met him, he was
on trial for trafficking.
[BUZZER SOUNDS]
Charlie got wind that was extorting his
former protégé from prison.
[DOOR CLOSES]
I'm not interested in
anything you're selling.
I know Boonstra's a hit man.
A lot of people know that.
The right people, at least.
Yeah.
And I also know that
you abducted his daughter
as incentive for him
to do a hit for you.
[GIRL SCREAMS]
[MAN GRUNTS]
I don't know anything about that.
But what I do know,
is that in the ten years he was with me,
no matter what task I threw at him,
he never once
failed to deliver on an assignment.
Not once.
He's that good.
He kidnapped a hitman's daughter?
That's a dangerous game to play.
JESSE: He used the same strategy there.
That's how he broke out.
His people took a guard's kids
in order to force him
to aid in the escape.
- Not afraid to hurt people.
- No, he is not.
I have personal experience.
To get his daughter back,
the hitman was supposed
to kill a witness
set to testify against Mankiewicz.
My job
Pick up, pick up, pick up!
to reach her security detail,
and stop her from coming out.
No, no, no!
No, no, no! Get back!
[GUN COCKS]
Get inside!
[GUN FIRES]
[WOMAN SCREAMS]
- You were shot?
- I was wearing a vest
biBut it still took me down for a week.
Okay, so who is Mankiewicz?
Wow, let's see.
Literally dozens of priors.
Murder, trafficking.
- Counterfeiting
- No, I mean who is he?
What's Mankiewicz's MO?
How does he operate?
Because they may never find
him in the streets, but,
but if we know how he works,
we can predict what he might do next.
Once we figure out what he's after.
Yeah. Okay.
Okay, how does he operate?
I mean with Mankiewicz,
he could be standing
right in front of you.
You would have no
idea what he was up to.
Like, a couple of years back,
around the time we made our
biggest counterfeit operation bust
Mankiewicz was
transferred to our station
because his life was being
threatened in prison.
He's hard to read.
When you think you're
looking at someone who's
defeated and caged, he's
really more like a spider.
Motionless at the centre of
his web of vulnerable people
he's made into henchmen.
- [REX WHINES]
- Waiting for the signal to bite.
[MAN GRUNTING]
[REX BARKING]
[BANGING] CHARLIE: We need
medical attention in here!
[REX BARKING]
Okay, easy.
Your cell didn't open on its own.
Somebody had to disable
the security cameras.
How many people do you have
working for you on the inside?
Enough to get the job done, Detective!
What did you think I was doing in jail?
Twiddling my thumbs? [CUFFS RATTLING]
MAN: Please exit in an orderly fashion!
This won't take long!
But we need everybody out!
CHARLIE: So that's what you're up to.
A gas leak.
How very Ocean's Eleven of you.
You're quick.
Yeah, that was a nice move.
Get yourself beaten up so you
can play the victim card for a transfer.
When you find out about the
bust from your informants
then just put yourself
right where you needed to be.
He manipulated all those moving parts
from within a high security environment.
Wow.
- What are you doing here?
- Whatever it is,
it's not for a walk down memory lane.
I mean, a smart play
would be to disappear.
Why come back to St. John's
where you're so well known?
And why take Sarah and Rex?
[REX GROWLS]
[REX WHINES]
What are you doing with all of this?
I've waited six years
for this moment, Sarah.
You can wait a few more
minutes to find out, okay?
I just want to treasure
this moment where
- I finally get to work with Rex!
- [REX BARKS]
[REX GROWLS]
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
- [REX BARKS AND GROWLS]
- Ever since our last meeting, Rex,
I realized I've been relying
too much on humans for help.
Detective?
You know, you might not be able to help.
But I got a feeling that your dog can.
What do you feed him
to make his coat so shiny?
It's okay, buddy.
CHARLIE: What do you
have planned, Mankiewicz?
MANKIEWICZ: Today, we're going
to learn about secrets together!
If I leave my money with you,
then all my secrets are revealed!
That would make me sad, but,
Rex's nose here,
is going to lead me to my money.
Because that's what friends do!
CHARLIE: Why are you talking like that?
You sound like a kindergarten teacher.
Oh, you see, I've done my research.
- [REX WHINES]
- And I know that aggressive tones
might agitate Rex here.
- [REX WHINES]
- Huh?
Isn't that right, buddy?
[REX BARKING]
How's that research working out for you?
I'd done research about dogs
and their handlers in the military.
But Rex was at a whole other level.
I was just getting my first glimpse
that Rex has a sixth sense about him.
Something sharper than his nose
which is an amazing nose!
Finding the rest of the counterfeit
should be nothing for a
magnificent beast like Rex here.
- [REX SNIFFING]
- [MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
Okay.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFS]
You really are impressive.
- [REX BARKS]
- Good boy, Rex!
It became instantly clear to me
that your talents were being wasted.
Good boy.
Getting thrown away by others.
So, I'm taking your dog with me.
[REX WHINES]
You see, he's the missing piece
to perfecting my counterfeit business.
Because if I can fool Rex,
I can fool anybody.
And he just might make
it out of here alive.
Go on, pal.
[REX MOANS]
It's okay, you know what to do.
Good boy, Rex!
Good boy!
- [REX BARKS]
- [MAN GRUNTS]
- [MEN GRUNTING]
- [REX BARKING]
Hey!
If you have to,
shoot the man! But save that dog!
MANKIEWICZ: I knew I
had to figure you out.
[REX BARKING]
But I didn't have enough
time back then, did I?
Go ahead and gloat. You earned it.
But imagine
[MANKIEWICZ SIGHS] In another world,
we could have been friends.
Maybe even partners.
Might have made a pretty good team.
Let me scratch you behind the
ears one last time, come on.
[REX BARKS]
Wasn't that bad, was it?
Rex!
Hey, bud!
[MANKIEWICZ LAUGHS]
Don't worry! I'm already working on it!
I promise you, one day,
you will be mine, Rex!
[REX BARKS]
I told you before, we
were going to be partners
- and I meant it.
- [REX BARKS]
You're going to love being a bad guy.
It's way more fun.
- [DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
- [REX BARKS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
Air Service Captain:
Detective Robertson!
They're calling for a seven block sweep
around where the officers were abducted.
When you're done in there
clearing the building,
you can hand it off.
You two have had a long day.
OFFICER: No, we'll keep going.
Give us what you got.
Bijou trained with Rex, Captain.
This is kind of personal for us.
DISPATCHER: Copy that.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING] [COMPUTER BEEPS]
JESSE: Okay. I've
ordered a list of names
of anyone that's called
or visited Mankiewicz
in the past few weeks.
Whoever helped him take Sarah and Rex
was likely in touch with him.
Sounds good.
But until we get a
lead from the streets,
is there anything more,
you can tell me about
you know, how his brain works?
Well, he's not just smart.
He researches every crime meticulously
and runs hot and cold, but mostly cold.
Even when things go wrong.
He can turn in a flash.
But just like that,
he's back.
Cold as ice.
CHARLIE: Where is Evelyn?
You know what I'm going to
do when I get out of here?
[CHARLIE SIGHS]
I'm going to go have a steak
at Edward's. You been?
Tell me where Evelyn is.
You know what else I'm going
to do when I get out of here?
Hmm?
I'm going to take a
look at you a little bit.
You're a real interesting fellow.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
So, he threatened Charlie?
So, he's fuelled by revenge.
Could you put together a list of
people he had a grudge against?
- Cops, old partners, rivals.
- Yeah, I'm on it.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Well
Hey, buddy.
Let's get this party started.
[MANKIEWICZ SIGHS]
You wanted an explanation. Well
here it comes.
I spent a lot of time
in the prison library
reading up on the SJPD
and this
magnificent beast.
Articles, news reports,
social media videos.
I came to truly respect Rex here.
He's an athlete.
He's fearless. He's brilliant.
And he's just the type of partner I need
to do what I have to do.
He wouldn't follow your orders.
No.
But he will with you guiding him, right?
So back to the story.
The last time I was put away,
I figured one of my people had squealed.
So I went through the process
of elimination, you might say.
But in the end, I didn't
think I got the right one.
So I kept digging.
It turns out,
the traitor was a partner.
A man I trusted.
Bill Sparks, pull him up.
Bill Sparks financed
my entire operation.
But it turns out,
he got picked up on another deal.
Sold me down the river to save his hide.
- So you're going to kill him?
- Me?
No.
- Rex is.
- [REX WHINES]
- [MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
- [REX WHINES]
- What've you got?
- I just got word from the prison in Ontario.
Mankiewicz had four visitors
in the past two months.
Steven Scholtz, Thomas Reid,
Curtis Murray, and Roman Koniuk.
I'm still working through the list.
Hmm.
Is there a pattern to who
Mankiewicz will work with?
Yeah. People like
the hitman who shot me.
Charlie got his backstory
when he was least expecting to hear it.
I saw you at my place.
I know you're looking for me,
but I need you to back off.
I can't do that. Boonstra.
You chose this life.
I was young and stupid and angry
when they brought me in from the street.
By Mankiewicz.
I hated it.
And it escalated.
Mankiewicz kept pushing
for more and more.
- Yeah.
- And if I told him no, he just
reminded me that I owed him.
And that he could end me.
So he gets them when they're
green and impressionable.
What about this young Curtis Murray?
Let me see.
The visit was two months ago.
Graduated from computer studies.
Wait a minute.
I think we just hit the jackpot.
His brother was one of
Mankiewicz's soldiers.
Very well.
Mankiewicz has obviously
gotten to him as well.
There has to be a reason Mankiewicz
specifically wants Curtis.
What's he done with his
computer studies degree?
[KEYBOARD CLACKING] [COMPUTER TRILLING]
Well, he worked contracts
at a number of high
tech security companies.
See if you can find out what systems
he's worked on and where.
You think we're dealing with a heist.
Mankiewicz could do a heist anywhere.
I think there still has to be
a reason why he came back here
and why he needs Sarah and Rex.
Wait a minute. I found
a phone under Curtis's name.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
Tracking it now.
If we're lucky,
if we find Curtis,
we find Sarah and Rex.
Hey.
We're not going to
let them do this, okay?
We're not going to let
them make you a criminal.
You're not some kind of soldier
who just follows orders,
who just does what he's told.
Am I right, Rex?
- That's yours.
- [TOY SQUEAKS]
And you can't come with me today
- so stay home and be good.
- [REX GROANS]
[REX GROWLS]
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
Oh, Rex!
[MUSIC TURNS MELANCHOLY]
[REX WHINES]
Hey hey! What's wrong?
I was talking about when
we told you to stay at home
and you did the right thing,
hmm?
By knowing you had to go out.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[REX GRUNTS]
[REX GROWLS]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[TABLE ITEMS CLATTERING]
SARAH: You very single
mindedly went out,
got the evidence.
You proved a murder nobody
would have even known about
because you listened to your gut.
Not to us.
You always do the
right things in the end.
- CURTIS: They're not usually like this!
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING]
MANKIEWICZ: Okay. They're going
to take their breaks at the right time.
- SARAH: Look behind me.
- MANKIEWICZ: We've waited this long.
Ignore where the guards should be.
Follow the man!
SARAH: You see that?
Right there.
Go.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFING]
MANKIEWICZ: Look.
See, there?
He's taking a smoke break.
CURTIS: Copy that.
MANKIEWICZ: No, he's already
headed back in, so
CURTIS: Okay, okay.
MANKIEWICZ: It's only
another ten minutes
- till the shift change.
- CURTIS: Really?
MANKIEWICZ: All right, we good to go?
CURTIS: All systems are operational.
MANKIEWICZ: Well,
look what we have here!
- This is for Rex.
- [REX WHIMPERS]
State of the art.
Curtis went all out on this.
There's a camera, a microphone,
and a bone conductive headset.
Back to work.
We want to be with
Rex every step of the way.
As you can see,
across the street from us
is Sparks Fish Packing.
You remember Billy Sparks?
He was the guy that ratted me out.
But he used one of his underlings
to do the dirty work and,
it took me a minute to figure that out.
But now Billy knows I'm out.
And Billy knows he's the
next name on my list.
So he's upped his security.
Good company, too.
But Curtis here did some time
in the operation and
was able to access the layout.
The entire system.
So we're going to go in there
and send Billy a little message.
So you expect Rex to just
sneak in there and attack him?
Rex is going to deliver a package.
500 grams of C4.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Billy's about to have a
really bad day at work.
And if I won't to help you
turn Rex into a killer?
You know, I thought you'd ask that.
So, I saved
a couple grams of the C4.
And it's here on Rex's collar.
If Rex does what I want him to do,
we're all going home
in a couple of hours.
SARAH: What if it doesn't work out?
Let's just see what happens
in the next two hours, okay?
Thanks.
[REX GROWLS, BARKS]
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
AIR SERVICE CAPTAIN: SJPD Air Unit 500.
Tip called in from Shea
Heights was a false lead.
OFFICER: Marine Unit 178.
We've also been fielding false tips
for the last couple of hours.
We're definitely being played.
DISPATCHER: Yeah, we've
been chasing a lot of those.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
[JESSE SIGHS]
JESSE: Hey, anything?
I checked out Curtis's
apartment. It was cleaned out.
Mankiewicz knew we'd ID Curtis.
He just wasted an hour of our time.
I've got a fix on Curtis's phone
but it just it doesn't make any sense.
Okay. Here's the location where
Sarah and Rex were kidnapped.
Now, the route goes
along Cornwall, then up Columbus
but then it starts meandering.
It was stopping and moving
at irregular intervals
until it finally just stopped.
I've sent two patrols there
who have clear eyes on the street.
But nobody matches Curtis.
Well, he knew we'd be on
to Curtis and the phone.
He dumped it in another vehicle.
Something that would be on the
move to keep us busy.
So what's our next move?
Any opening Mankiewicz gives us
is designed to waste our time.
We can't play his game.
Did you dig up a list of enemies?
Nobody stands out as having a beef
that he'd come back to kill for.
Nobody we know about
but I think figuring that out
is how we get our partners back.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
MANKIEWICZ: Okay.
So this whole area here
does exactly what the sign says.
Processes over a ton a day.
But over here
Well, this is where the action is.
Sparks's private offices.
Protected by guards and alarms.
Normally it would take an
army to get through but,
well, we've got Rex here.
But first,
we have to get past
the perimeter guards.
But that shouldn't be a problem
for you, buddy, right?
Stealth and surveillance.
That's your kind of thing.
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
[INDISTINCT BAR CHATTER]
[REX BARKS]
Huh?
You can be a ghost when you want to be.
[REX BARKS]
Right, boy. So now, once we
get in past the guard station,
then our next challenge is the corridor.
This is where it gets interesting.
This is where we're going to run into
the laser security system.
Imagine how happy I was to read
that Rex has been through
something like this before.
You remember that one, buddy?
[REX BARKS]
How do you know all this?
MANKIEWICZ: Prison library, baby.
Policemen's National
Digest April, five years ago.
Our man is famous.
It's the identical laser
system used by M&B.
Armed and impenetrable to anyone
in theory.
The smartest minds
and tripwire alarms up against you.
And I've got to confess.
I would have made the
same mistake they did.
But I did not know dogs
sense infrared lasers!
I can imagine how a dog ducks
under a horizontal beam.
But I'd love to know how
you beat the diagonals.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
It should have been impossible,
but you did it, partner.
- [REX BARKS]
- You did it.
[MANKIEWICZ SIGHS]
Okay. But once inside,
we've got to get to the vent on the wall
adjoining the offices.
You've done this before.
I read about a case
where you guys had to get inside a
sealed lab at Cooper-Weiss.
Sealed, of course,
except for a way through the vents.
A hidden route.
That's the kind of thing
Rex knows how to use.
SARAH: Wait no, hold on. No.
Rex didn't just know how to use vents.
That was a dangerous operation.
He had to train for that.
All right.
But tell me how they prepared
my boy Rex here the first time.
Well, first of all, they were off site.
So, they had to improvise.
RENLEY: We've got
three lengths of carpet
to exactly match the lengths
of the venting system
leading to the lab.
He needs to associate
this precise distance with crawling low.
- CHARLIE: Good job.
- That's a bit better.
- Good job.
- The next one is the fork in the road.
So you've got to get him
- to go down and to the left.
- Down buddy. Good.
- Good.
- Go to your left, buddy.
- Get him up, Charlie.
- Crawl, pal. Crawl!
- Good. Now get him to do it again.
- Hey, buddy.
- Stay.
- Stay, buddy.
- Now crawl.
- Ready?
- Yeah.
- Focus, boy.
Come on. You've reached
the fork in the road now.
- We're going to go left.
- Here. Here, this way.
- Left left!
- Almost.
We need to go left.
- Yeah.
- Get on him, good.
- Crawl. Crawl!
- Come on. Crawl.
- BOTH: Go!
- That's a bit better.
Because it's test time, people!
We'll see if Rex can
choose left on his own!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
This is the part where
there's a choice to make!
Come on, yeah!
Yeah, you did all right!
MANKIEWICZ: Yeah, he
had to train for it!
And it wasn't easy for him, either!
But nothing worth doing ever is.
Don't worry, son.
It's just like the last time.
You go straight. Then
you turn to the right.
So now,
we're outside of Sparks's office.
Rex drops the package, gets
to the exit, and we're away.
You don't need to do this. I mean
You could just run.
Sarah, it's
it's the principle of the thing.
You know?
You let people who get the
best of you continue living,
well, it sends a bad message.
Then everyone thinks they
can take a shot at you.
I only wish I could have
taught Charlie that before he died.
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
CHARLIE: Oh!
- To be continued.
- [SARAH CHUCKLES]
MANKIEWICZ: Keep your eyes on
the guy with the dark hair.
- CURTIS: I'm on it, boss.
- MANKIEWICZ: Yeah, that one.
- [REX GROWLS]
- CURTIS: You got it.
MANKIEWICZ: Tell me if he
checks in with his team leader.
CURTIS: You got it.
- [HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
- DISPATCHER: Say again, Lorraine!
AIR SERVICE CAPTAIN: Boots on the ground
say the phone in question
was taped under the truck!
Your hunch was right
about Curtis's phone.
A uniform unit found
in a landscaper's truck.
So we know where they aren't.
I'll bet that landscaper drives
this route every Wednesday.
Maybe Mankiewicz chose that
truck and that route for a reason.
To lead us in a different direction
from where he took Sarah and Rex.
It's worth a shot.
Yeah, look!
They were abducted in Mount Pearl.
The landscaper's route winds
consistently northeast.
Is there anyone in
Mankiewicz's enemy list
who's located southwest
of where they were taken?
- I'll look into it.
- Yeah.
Look to see if any potential targets
coincide with companies
where Curtis may have worked
in the last few months.
I suspect he knows we're after him.
And he doesn't have long.
That means
Sarah and Rex might not
have much time either.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX GROWLS]
Hey.
We've been in tough
situations before, right?
When you're stuck, but
you have to hold back.
Remember when we were the ones
who had to wait it out?
[SENSORS BEEPING]
[AIRPLANE ENGINE ROARING]
Everybody hold on!
- [REX WHINES]
- [LOUD CRASH]
SARAH: I don't know how
we were all breathing.
All of us hurt.
And there was no way we could
have gotten out of there.
We were stuck. You were our last hope.
JESSE: Guys! There's no cell service!
Go, go get help!
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[EAGLE CRIES]
[EAGLE CRIES]
WOMAN: Hey there, boy.
Are you lost?
SARAH: If you didn't come through, Rex,
I wouldn't have made it.
JESSE: Sarah, come on, wake up. Wake up!
Please!
- No!
- Rex!
- Jesse.
- JESSE: Good boy!
Hey!
Oh, I'm so happy to see you!
[REX WHINES]
You made it all by yourself.
Ah, you're my hero, Rex.
But now is not the time for an attack.
[REX GROWLS]
MANKIEWICZ: Yeah.
Nice and snug.
[REX MOANS]
There you go, buddy.
SARAH: I know you hate
it. So do I, but
Mark and the others know we're missing.
- MANKIEWICZ: All right.
- They'll come for us.
Time's awasting!
This is for you!
Go.
We have to do what he says for now.
Here you go, buddy!
[REX SNIFFS]
- [REX WHINES]
- I know you know what that is, so
Go.
Remember, do the right thing.
[HEROIC MUSIC]
Sarah! Aren't you proud of our
boy going off on this big adventure?
How proud are you?
[MANKIWICZ CHUCKLES]
All right. Let's get the headset.
CURTIS: I'm on it, boss.
I have nothing here.
I have looked through
Mankiewicz's enemy list,
rival organizations, rogue players,
people who moved in after he went away.
No one operates in that direction.
How about his friends then?
- Where are you going with this?
- The witness
- in the trial that brought him down.
- Rose Moore.
Yeah, the file says that she
was a low level money washer.
I mean, she shouldn't have had access
to the inner workings of
Mankiewicz's operation.
You think someone else
gave her that information?
Someone who might profit
from Mankiewicz going away.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER]
Can you hear me?
SARAH: Rex?
- Can you hear me?
- [REX WHINES]
Yeah, okay.
Okay, keep going.
The big doors by the truck.
That's it, that's it, that's great.
[REX WHINES]
MANKIEWICZ: Uh-oh, hold up.
We've got guards at twelve o'clock.
[SENSORS TRILLING]
[SENSORS TRILLING]
[REX WHINES]
Ah, look closely, Rex!
You see them, don't you?
You see the lasers!
So that's how you beat the lasers!
[MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
My boy was born to do this.
Curtis, make sure you save this feed.
We're going to make him internet famous!
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
He's found the right area.
Now, the vent is halfway down.
Okay, keep walking.
Right, right ahead.
Just a little to the right.
Rex, right beside you.
[REX GRUNTS]
There okay, there.
You have to go inside.
[REX SNIFFS]
What's he doing?
I don't know. I can't tell.
[REX SNIFFS]
- Get him in there.
- No, he's going as fast as he can.
Okay, Rex. Rex, pull off the register.
You have to find a way in.
That's it, that's it.
[METAL CLANKING]
Okay.
Okay, this is like last time.
Slow and steady.
This is just like last time, Rex.
No no, not left. No, back up.
The other way, the other way.
Okay, now straight.
[SARAH SIGHS]
MANKIEWICZ: Fantastic job, my boy.
Just one more thing and we're there!
MARK: The different security
apparatuses Curtis knows,
- they're like seven or eight?
- Mm-hmm.
- Jesse.
- Has Rex got past security systems?
- Sure, yeah.
Cross reference the kind
of systems that Rex got past
with any of those systems
that Curtis worked on.
I think that one of those clients
might be Mankiewicz's target.
MANKIEWICZ: Okay, all right, all right.
Get him closer to the office.
Turn him right at the end of the hall
and we're there.
[REX GROANS]
[REX GRUNTS]
Take him closer to the office.
Please. Please don't do this.
JESSE: Okay. I've got six companies
where Curtis did contract
work on security systems
like the ones that Rex defeated.
Which of them are in the
southwest of the city?
We've got two.
Sullivan's Jewellers
and Sparks Fish Packers.
Why would a fish packing plant
have a high tech security system?
That's a good question.
And Curtis's GPS
timeline in the last month
says he passed by that
operation three times.
That company is owned by Bill Sparks.
But from what I've read,
Sparks is a solid citizen.
Everybody's got secrets.
And some more than others.
Should we scramble a unit?
Not fast enough.
They won't make it in time.
It's just us. Come on. We're on our way!
MANKIEWICZ: I said, take
him closer to the office!
I want to see Sparks! I
want to know he's there.
Please, please don't do this.
Please don't make Rex a killer.
I'll tell you what.
When he drops the package,
I will call in a fire
alarm on the plant side.
And at least let the workers escape.
We can do it my way.
Or you and Rex die too.
Rex, go to the office.
SPARKS: Yes, I know they're waiting.
I told you the shipment is
coming in on the Northern Mist.
The bomb's close enough to
do what I need to do now.
SPARKS: They come in
on Tuesdays and Fridays
and it's mixed in with that catch.
I will have it by the end of the day.
Now how about we talk about payment?
MANKIEWICZ: Tell him to
drop it and get out.
Now! Do it!
Rex, no!
That's my boy! Yes!
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
SARAH: You didn't have to do this.
You're a psychopath!
You're a psychopath!
You think we're not going to find you?
MANKIEWICZ: Maybe someone will find me.
But it ain't going to be you, darling.
And I lied to you.
I would never put a
bomb in Rex's collar.
There's no way I would
hurt that magnificent beast.
Also, I lied about the fire alarm.
I can't risk Sparks getting away.
I'm going to go do the honours.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[METAL SCRAPING AT CUFFS]
[HELICOPTER WHIRLING]
JESSE: All seems quiet at
Sparks's Fish Packing plant.
I bet he's near.
If Mankiewicz is
planning a hit on Sparks,
he won't be far away.
He'll want to see it with his own eyes.
And that white building looks
like it'd be a good vantage point.
Modern cameras on the wall,
right beside the fish plant.
And it's good security for
a place that looks vacant.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Look there.
There. Northeast corner.
That's him.
Where's Sarah and Rex?
Well, if I'm right and I hope I'm not,
Rex will be in Sparks's plant
doing whatever
Mankiewicz wanted him for.
Sarah will be inside the white building.
Try and avoid the cameras.
I'll take Mankiewicz.
- You go get her.
- All right.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[METAL SCRAPING AT CUFFS]
[CUFFS SNAPPING]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
What's What's happening out there?
Step away, Curtis.
Step away. On the floor, now.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[CURTIS GRUNTS]
[CURTIS GROANS]
- Well!
- [CUFFS RATTLING]
Looks like you had it under control!
Not even close.
[SENSORS TRILLING]
[ALARM SOUNDS]
What the hell is going on?
[ALARM BLARING]
[INDISTINCT CLAMOURING]
MANKIEWICZ: You picked up the bomb!
I really didn't want to do this, buddy.
Hey, Rexy!
We're still friends, right, buddy?
- Hey, pal?
- [REX BARKS]
[MANKIEWICZ GROANS]
- [CUFFS RATTLE]
- So, you're the new guy.
I didn't think you'd figure it out.
I think you underestimated
my partner too.
I'll remember you. [MANKIEWICZ CHUCKLES]
I'll send you a picture for your cell
of both of us.
AIR SERVICE CAPTAIN:
Both officers are safe
and Mankiewicz is in custody!
[OFFICERS CHEERING]
All searching units can stand down!
OFFICER: Copy that. Coming home.
MARK: All right, thank you.
You look pretty relaxed
for someone who spent the day
as a hostage to a homicidal criminal.
SARAH: I'm actually just trying
not to think about it too much.
[SARAH SIGHS] I mean, he would
have killed all those people.
- And not felt a thing.
- [REX WHINES]
I trusted you guys would find us.
And of course, I had Rex to support me.
JESSE: No better backup
in a pinch. I'll tell you.
I just spoke to the prison.
They said they're upping
security on Mankiecwicz.
And hopefully that's the
last we'll see of him, but,
I guess we should never
underestimate his ingenuity.
Or his insanity.
Speaking from recent
experience, I agree with that.
Yeah, plus, I mean, added bonus, Sarah.
You overheard Bill Sparks
talking about a deal
over Rex's audio link.
So Coast Guard was able
to take down the Northern Mist
with a cargo full of his contraband.
MARK: Okay! I think
we can all drink to that.
[SOFT MUSIC]
Oh, and for you, sir.
[REX SNIFFS]
- [REX WHINES]
- Well, okay, they were fresher this morning.
He's just mad they were
out of maple glaze.
Well, I can finish that
if Rex doesn't want it.
- [REX BARKS]
- [MARK CHUCKLES]
JESSE: I had three donuts
for breakfast yesterday.
- I don't care.
- [REX BARKS]
Mm-hmm.
Three donuts for breakfast.
[ALL LAUGH]
[CLOSING THEME MUSIC]
