Trial by Fire

1
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
- [DRAMATIC MUSIC]
- [INDISTINCT YELLING]
Let's go, let's go!
Pick it up!
Higher!
[TRAINEES CHEERING]
Nice one, Sawyer!
STANTON: Nice rescue,Sawyer.
You're up, Leila.
SAWYER: Leila!
You got this. You got this.
Come on Leila! Let's go!
- [TRAINEES CHEER]
- Head on a swivel!
Come on!
STANTON: Get a move on, Leila!
- The clock is ticking!
- SAWYER: Let's go!
LEILA: I don't see any bodies.
[LEILA BREATHES HEAVILY]
SAWYER: Hey, it's Sawyer here.
I can hear you breathing fast.
Just stay calm, Leila, and keep moving.
You've got 30 seconds to find the dummy.
[LEILA BREATHING HEAVILY]
STANTON: She's taking too long.
Get in there, Sawyer.
SAWYER: I'm coming in, Leila.
LEILA: Hold on. Maybe it's in here.
Oh!
SAWYER: Leila, stand back!
That's not a dummy!
- That body's real!
- What?
Captain Stanton! We need help in here!
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[UPBEAT THEME MUSIC]
- MARK: Morning, J.
- Hey.
- What have we got?
- Okay, so,
a body was found in a locker
during this morning's controlled burn.
This is a private firefighting school.
Sarah's inside with forensics.
Who found the body?
Two trainees.
Leila Romero and her classmate,
Sawyer Gill, who was also part
of the exercise this morning.
I'll speak with the two
of them and the staff
right after I check in with Sarah.
Well, what about Rex? I mean,
it's still pretty hot in there.
Yeah, we came prepared.
[BAG UNZIPPING]
- Hey, Sarah.
- Hey, you two.
Rex, looking good!
- What do you know so far?
- Not much, I'm afraid.
The fire wiped out all
trace of fingerprints
or DNA in the locker.
It was bolted shut.
Presumably the killer
didn't want it found.
What about the victim?
There was evidence of blunt
force trauma on the back of the skull
but no sign of blood spatter
anywhere in the building.
The victim was likely killed elsewhere
and then the body was
brought here postmortem.
ID?
Well, it's going to take time.
Fire wreaks havoc on human tissue.
Not to mention the locker
trapped the heat inside.
And, there's a clear
burn line along the floor,
suggesting a trail of fuel led the flame
from the furniture to the locker.
And something more than a body
must have fed the flame in
there to reach cremation heat,
acting like, a kiln
to intensify the destruction.
Yeah, my guess is that was
the point. Whoever did this was
trying to erase all
evidence of their crime.
Nearly worked.
If the body hadn't been found,
there would have been
nothing left but ash.
[INTRIGUING MUSIC]
[REX WHINES]
[REX BARKS]
[REX BARKS]
Sounds like Rex has something.
[REX WHINES]
It's wet. Yeah, we see it, Rex.
- What do you think it is?
- Some kind of accelerant?
Might explain the intensity
of the burn inside the locker.
Ughh.
MARK: Hi, there.
Detective Mark Hudson, SJPD.
This is my partner, Rex.
You're in charge of the facility?
Yes, James Kessler.
This is my training
Captain, Elizabeth Stanton.
Pleasure.
Is there any way to put a time frame
on how long the body might
have been in that locker
before this morning's exercise?
STANTON: Actually, there is.
I conducted a line hall drill
with the trainees yesterday.
Running hoses up and down the stairs.
And the body wouldn't have
been there yesterday because
the locker was open then.
Yeah, I remember it.
MARK: So the body was placed
there sometime overnight.
Who has access to the
facility after hours?
KESSLER: All the staff have keys
to the outer perimeter gate.
And the trainees stay in dorms on site.
They're free to come and go
but any movement in that direction
would be picked up by
our security cameras.
Okay, I'm going to need
that security footage
and to speak with the two trainees
who participated in
this morning's exercise.
KESSLER: Sure, but please,
they're still under my
command and my responsibility.
So I need you to bear in mind,
this has been a traumatic experience
for them. They're just kids.
MARK: Well, neither of them
are suspects right now, but,
someone smuggled a
body onto the grounds.
- I'm hoping they know something.
- KESSLER: Of course.
Uh, they're often out
back at the picnic table.
Okay. Thank you again.
Rex, let's go meet some trainees.
Leila.
We're with SJPD.
I'm Mark. This is my partner, Rex.
How are you holding up?
They warned us about this in training.
Seeing a dead body.
I should have prepared myself better.
I've wanted to be a
firefighter my whole life.
But if I'm not cut out for it,
then what?
[WATER BOTTLE CLANKING]
- [REX WHINES]
- Oh, come on.
[LEILA SIGHS]
Thank you.
I don't know if this is helpful, but
you never get used to it.
All you can do is let it
drive you to keep it
from happening again.
Leila, we're trying to figure
out how the body got in there.
Can you tell me if you saw
or heard anything last night?
Uh
I went back to my dorm room to study.
Did you see anyone coming or going?
I saw Sawyer heading out around 8:30.
I don't know.
Maybe he saw something?
[REX SNIFFING]
- What's he doing?
- [REX SNIFFING]
He's detecting something
under your jacket.
Do you mind showing me your arm?
[REX SNIFFING]
That looks bad.
How'd you get such a bad
burn through your equipment?
It was just a mistake.
It's nothing.
Can I go now?
Everyone else is working and
I'm just sitting here.
Sure.
[REX GRUNTS]
Sawyer, I understand the night
before you found the body,
you were off campus.
SAWYER: Yeah! I left right after 8:30
I had a date. [SAWYER CHUCKLES]
They've been teasing
me about it all week.
But you got to take advantage
while you can, right?
What time did you get back here?
Around midnight, I think.
Did you see, or hear anything unusual?
No. It was quiet.
I got in and, fell asleep immediately.
Nothing interesting.
You sure about that?
My partner seems to think
there's something pretty
interesting in your duffel bag.
[REX WHINES]
Oh my God. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I totally forgot about
that jerry can I found.
I found it on my way back from my date,
just lying on the grass.
I just figured somebody
dropped it, but
[MARK SNIFFS]
It smells like accelerant.
I'm going to need you to tell me exactly
where you found this, Sawyer.
- Okay.
- Okay!
DONOVAN: So what's your take on
our witnesses at the fire institute?
JESSE: I checked the students and staff.
Their background checks came back clean.
MARK: As for the two who found the body,
Sawyer left to go on a date
and had the empty jerry can.
Leila had a suspicious burn on her arm
but they both claimed to
know nothing about the body.
Hmm. Okay.
So why do you have
that look on your face?
[MARK SIGHS] I don't know.
I mean, they're a tight group.
It reminded me of when I
first joined the military.
The youthful camaraderie. Feeling,
you're all bonded together
but it did seem that they
were hiding something.
JESSE: Huh.
JESSE: Hiding something?
Like what they saw last night?
Maybe.
And you know, trouble is,
without an ID on the victim,
finding out how that body
got into the fire tower
is our only way forward.
Jesse, any word on
that security footage?
JESSE: There was nothing
on three of the camera files.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
- And I'm just downloading
- the final one now, and uh Ah!
- [COMPUTER BEEPS]
Okay, let me check.
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING]
- Yeah.
We're maybe about to find out
how they smuggled the body
onto the grounds of the fire institute.
Because this camera
is pointed at the gate.
And I've already checked the cameras
pointing at the entrances
to the dorms and the street.
But nothing of the burn tower?
JESSE: No, they don't
have a camera on that.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING COMPUTER BEEPING]
That's most of the staff leaving.
Yeah, there's Sawyer,
- leaving on his date.
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING COMPUTER BEEPING]
DONOVAN: Huh. She's
looking around a lot.
Who's that?
[KEYBOARD CLACKING COMPUTER BEEPING]
Captain Stanton. She's
the training captain.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING COMPUTER BEEPING]
JESSE: Okay, there's Sawyer coming back.
[TENSE MUSIC]
Nothing. How is that possible?
The body had to get there somehow.
MARK: Jesse. Could
we run through that again?
Okay.
[REX WHINES]
Wait. Stop.
Go back.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING]
[REX BARKS]
MARK: Okay, that must be the part.
Could you maybe run it slowly?
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING]
- From back a bit?
There. Freeze.
[COMPUTER BEEPING]
Looks like someone
was scoping out the place.
[REX GRUNTS]
Headlights aren't much
but at least Rex got us that.
Jesse, see if you can find
it on any other cameras nearby.
- I want to know where they went next.
- Yeah, I'm on it.
Rex. You want to see Sarah?
Hey.
We got your text.
Yeah, preliminary autopsy results.
The victim died of a cranial fracture
as suspected, and then,
was doused with an accelerant
that matches the one
that Rex found on the scene.
And in the jerry can that
Sawyer found on the grounds.
Well, that's interesting.
What kind of accelerant?
According to the chromatography test,
it's kerosene.
Very stable. Burns hot.
What did we learn about the victim?
Based on pelvic structure,
the victim is female,
50 to 65 years old.
We can check missing persons.
What about dental records?
Now, I can canvass local dentists
but I think we'll get
an ID faster with this.
- She had a surgical pin.
- Mm-hmm.
In her leg from an earlier fracture.
Each one has a unique serial number.
I can only make out a few digits.
But I've contacted all the medical
supply companies in North America.
No promises, but, I think it's
our best bet at getting an ID.
Hey, guys. So, I got
a hit on the vehicle
from the neighbourhood security footage.
It's a black pickup truck
and it's heading towards
the back of the institute.
- [Rex whines]
- MARK: Did you get a plate number?
I'm working to clarify the image.
MARK: Okay, meanwhile,
if this is how the body was
smuggled onto the grounds,
- Rex should be able to pick up the scent.
- [REX BARKS]
Good work, Jesse.
We'll go walk that perimeter.
- Yeah.
- [DRAMATIC MUSIC]
MARK: All right. I'll look for
CCTV cameras while you do your thing.
[REX SNIFFS]
[REX GROWLS]
You got something, partner?
[REX GROWLS]
[REX GROWLS]
Yeah, I see it, I see it.
So, this is how they smuggled
the body onto the grounds.
Here you go.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX GROWLS]
Okay, I'm coming.
Yeah. What have you got?
Oh, wow.
- [REX GROWLS]
- Somebody tore their jacket.
Good work.
[PHONE RINGING]
- JESSE: Hello.
- Jesse, do me a favour
and run that black truck against a name.
Sawyer Gill.
The trainee.
SAWYER: You've got to take
advantage while you can, right?
JESSE: Yeah, I'm on it!
[REX BARKS]
MARK: We have your truck on video,
near the back fence of the institute.
It's not what you think, I promise.
We found a piece of torn fabric
that matches your jacket.
Not to mention your fingerprints
on the fence itself
and the jerry can with traces
of the matching accelerant.
Yeah. If you have an
explanation, I'm all ears.
As soon as I got back from my date,
I was going to go to sleep,
but I changed my mind,
and I went around back.
So you admit that you know
about the secret entrance
- at the back of the institute?
- It's not a secret.
Trainees have been using it for years
to sneak into the burn
tower without being seen.
We go there to chill, have a few beers.
What were you doing there last night?
I knew there was a controlled
burn exercise the next day
and that we'd be retrieving dummies.
I figured they'd already
hidden them in the tower
and I wanted to scope it out.
In other words, you
were trying to cheat.
It's not a competition.
Leila can freeze up sometimes.
So I figured if I
could help guide her
Mmm.
Look, you have no idea how badly
we all want this, to like
to graduate and get
to work helping people.
If that's true,
what did you see in there?
Was the locker open or closed?
I never made it inside.
As soon as I got through the fence,
I saw a flashlight shining in the tower.
I ran back to my truck.
And you didn't say anything?
I was worried about getting in trouble.
My whole family are firefighters
going back generations.
I didn't want to risk my whole
career over one stupid mistake.
If that hole in the fence has been
there for years like Sawyer says
then anyone who knew about it could
have snuck in without being seen.
Jesse did a wide sweep of
all the cameras in the area
and came up with nothing.
Whoever did it was careful.
They managed to avoid them,
- made sure they weren't caught.
- Yeah.
- Well, they're going to be.
- Mark.
Captain Stanton reached out
and she wants to resume
the trainee drills.
Are you comfortable
releasing the burn tower?
Um, well, I'm okay if Sarah is.
Sorry, I just heard back from one
of the medical supply companies.
They have an ID on the victim.
Joe, I think it's someone you know.
JESSE: Sylvia Laughton.
59 years old.
Retired criminal court judge.
DONOVAN: Sylvia Laughton
was a legend on Duckworth.
I've known her for years.
Are you sure it's her?
SARAH: I cross-referenced
her medical records
once I got the name.
The pin was from a cycling
accident ten years ago.
[DONOVAN SIGHS] She presided
over hundreds of cases.
Always fair.
Why would anyone do that to her?
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
DONOVAN: This is more
than just a colleague.
This is a friend of
mine that's been killed.
I mean, I've known her for years.
Start pulling those files.
We're looking for anyone who
may have held a grudge against her
but focus on people who
had a knowledge of fire
or a connection to the institute.
Whoever did this knew
how to incinerate a body
and get on those grounds unseen.
We need to inform her next of kin.
She had a daughter.
[SOFT MUSIC]
[MILLIE CRIES]
I'm so sorry, Millie.
[REX MOANS SOFTLY]
[REX WHINES]
Your mother was fearless
in her commitment to justice.
I considered her a friend.
MILLIE: Thank you.
I always used to worry when
she took on those big cases.
To think it happened now.
After she was retired.
When was the last time
you spoke with her?
MILLIE: A few days ago.
She was working on some
project for the past few weeks.
What kind of project?
MILLIE: She wouldn't tell
me anything about it.
But I think it had something
to do with one of her old cases.
She said she was trying
to right an old wrong.
MARK: Right an old wrong?
We're going to need to look
through your mother's residence.
Do you have a copy of her key?
My mother fought for justice
her entire life.
Please.
You need to find justice for her.
- [Rex whines]
- MARK: Thanks.
Rex and I will head right over.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Easy.
- [OMINOUS MUSIC]
- [REX GROWLS]
SJPD! We're coming in! [GUN COCKS]
[REX SNIFFING]
Ah, someone was searching for something.
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX GROWLS]
- [REX YELPS]
- Yeah, I see it.
- [DRAMATIC MUSIC]
- [DOOR CREAKING]
- No!
- MARK: Stop! SJPD!
MAN: Aghh!
- [REX GROWLS]
- Off, Rex!
On your feet. Up you get.
- No, you don't get it!
- Hands behind your back!
I didn't break in!
I didn't break in!
Judge Sylvia, she was trying to save me!
DONOVAN: Cody Morrow.
32 years old, convicted in 2013
of five counts of, wait for it,
arson. Judge Laughton gave him 12 years.
12 years for arson?
Yeah, the case was a
big deal at the time.
A serial arsonist burning
down garages all over the city.
It was only a matter of
time before someone got hurt
and ultimately they did.
A John Doe was found
killed in the last fire.
So they charged him with murder.
Yeah, they pled it down to second degree
but Judge Laughton gave him the max.
But here's the kicker.
According to her phone records,
Cody called her over three dozen times
since he's been released.
So why did he say that
she was trying to save him?
Is Sylvia okay?
They wouldn't give me a straight answer.
I got your file.
Fire, after fire,
after fire.
Let's start with where
you were two nights ago.
I don't know. At home.
- Alone.
- Are you familiar with
- the North Atlantic Fire Institute?
- Of course I am.
You read my file, didn't you?
I used to go up there to watch
the controlled burns before.
I'm over that now. I got treatment.
What's this about?
What were you doing at
Judge Laughton's house?
I was checking on her.
I saw the door open, the place
trashed, just like you did.
And you just happened to know
where a retired judge lives?
We're friends.
Yeah, I know.
A judge hanging out
with an ex-con, right?
That's who Sylvia is.
You said she was trying to save you.
What does that mean?
She was helping me with my case.
She was the only only one I got
to believe I never killed anybody.
Uh
Start at the beginning.
When did you first make
contact with Judge Laughton?
After I was convicted, I
wrote to her from prison.
I admitted to setting the
garage fires all summer.
I'm not proud of it.
I was messed up,
angry, living in an abusive home.
Burning stuff seemed to be
the only way to get noticed.
But I swear I never set that last one.
I was always careful. I
made sure no one got hurt.
What did the judge
do when you wrote her?
She wrote back. She
told me to own up to it.
Take the blame.
Would have been a lot
easier if I took her advice.
I was eligible for parole years ago,
but got denied because
I wouldn't admit to it.
But the killer was still out there.
Free.
If I lied, took the blame,
he'd never be caught.
Anyway, I kept writing,
kept asking questions, sending info.
She kept writing back.
After a while, I think
she started to believe me.
And when you got out?
We met for coffee a couple times a week.
She started to figure I guess
I had nothing left to gain.
I'd already done my whole time.
So she agreed to help me
figure out who really did it.
When was the last time
you heard from her?
Four days ago. She left a message
saying that she made some real progress.
And then nothing.
No calls, no coffee.
I tried calling her but she
didn't answer, so then I got worried.
I went to her place and
She's dead, isn't she?
Oh, I can't believe I got her into this!
She died because of me!
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
JESSE: I may have found
evidence to support Cody's story
that the judge was helping him.
We checked the system.
Judge Laughton did log in to access
the case file from the deadly arson
when she'd already retired.
Not to mention what her daughter said.
She's righting an old wrong.
It's classic Sylvia.
If she thought she'd
sent a man to prison
for a murder he didn't commit,
there isn't a length she wouldn't
go to to right that wrong.
I mean, if it's true that
Cody didn't kill John Doe
DONOVAN: Then whoever
did kill him would be upset
that she's looking into it.
- What does the case file say?
- Well
Okay. The last fire was set
just after midnight in Shea Heights,
the same area as Cody's other one.
And during the trial, Cody
claims that he was out of town but
he couldn't prove it.
[MARK SIGHS] What about the victim?
JESSE: Male. Late teens to early 30s.
Check this out.
It says here the body was
almost completely cremated, but
the autopsy shows a skull
fracture to the back of the head.
[REX WHINES]
Well, that sounds familiar.
What else is in the file?
Oh, it's just photos of the crime scene
and objects that survived the fire.
[REX WHINES]
Hold on. What's that?
JESSE: It's a pendant
found near the victim.
Police back then, they
couldn't determine its origin.
It's got some sort of crest on it.
Is that a couple of letters?
A. B. E. R.
Have another go at identifying it.
I mean, if John Doe was wearing it,
it could be a clue to their identity.
You're thinking that if
we identify the victim,
it'd give us an idea
who the real killer is.
And whoever they are may
have killed Judge Laughton.
How about it, Jesse?
Can you send the old
autopsy report to Sarah?
Let's get her working on
identifying John Doe as well.
- Yeah, will do.
- In the meantime, I'll hang on to Cody
and see if I can get him a psych eval.
We can't rule him out as
a killer of either victim.
[REX GRUNTS]
No.
All right, let's check in with
Sarah at the judge's house.
Whoever broke in, they were careful.
No prints anywhere.
What about the documents
in the fireplace?
I sent them back to the lab
to see if we could salvage
anything but I did find
a partial shoe print.
Cody was wearing boots
when I picked him up.
[SARAH SIGHS]
Okay, well, if he
didn't break in, who did?
What were they trying to destroy?
Evidence connecting them to whoever died
- in that fire 14 years ago?
- Yeah.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
Rex must be tracking the soot
on the bottom of the intruder's shoe.
The guy probably parked back here.
I'll get Jesse to canvass door cams.
Okay.
Oh, looks like Rex found something.
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX BARKS]
Gloves.
Any chance you'd get a print off those?
Well, sometimes you can
get a partial off the cuff
from when they've
pulled off the second glove.
Right. Well, maybe our
- [PHONE CHIMES]
- mystery intruder is in the national database.
Hey Jesse, what's up?
JESSE: I pulled the GPS data
from Judge Laughton's phone
and it turns out she
did visit the coffee shop
that Cody claimed they
met up at twice a week.
The timing fits with her phone records.
So he's telling the truth.
I also got her last known location.
It's a bike path in Pippy Park.
Tell Sarah forensics will
meet her at the scene.
Copy that.
[POLICE SIREN]
[ELEVATOR PINGS]
MARK: Hey, they told
me you were headed up.
Still here?
Yeah, I wanted to get
the lowdown on the search.
Yeah, I, um
I think we found where Judge Laughton
might have been murdered.
We discovered this
just off the bike path about five
kilometres from the parking lot.
Yeah, it looks like blood.
I collected samples. I'm just
waiting for the lab analysis.
[REX YELPS]
I mean, it could be
an animal I suppose.
But did forensics pick up anything else?
A bike was found stashed
in the bushes nearby.
- [PHONE CHIMES]
- If it's Judge Laughton's bike,
- it stands to reason that
- Oh, the lab just confirmed
the blood found was hers.
The team also found a shoeprint
near the parking lot that
matches the one in the house.
It looks like it was the same person
who tracked her to the park.
Killed her, and went to the
house to destroy the evidence.
Seems that way.
I'm just having the lab
run it for size and brand.
There were no cameras in the park
or even in the parking lot.
So we're no closer to
an ID on the killer.
What about the
fingerprints on the gloves
and the documents in the fireplace?
The print didn't match
anything in our databases
and I'm actually heading
back to the lab now
to work on those burnt documents.
I should have an answer by morning.
- You're working a double?
- Yeah.
Judge Laughton gave her
life searching for justice
and Cody served 12 years for a crime
it seems he didn't even commit.
What's a night's sleep in comparison?
- Good night.
- Good night.
Good night, Pat.
[SARAH SIGHS]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Okay.
[MUSIC STOPS]
Ughh.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC RESUMES]
[KNOCKING]
Morning.
You look well-rested.
Ughh. Ha ha.
I'm actually glad you're here.
I've got some stuff to show you.
The shoeprint was a dead end.
Uh, it's one of the most
common brands out there, but,
I was able to decipher some of the words
on the burnt documents.
Now it's not much
but she was focusing on
something called the gauntlet?
She wrote it more than once. Look.
Twice on this page alone.
- The gauntlet?
- Yeah.
- Any idea what it refers to?
- No.
But it's somehow related to the
pendant found at the crime scene.
She was looking into that, too.
- Let's go see what Jesse knows.
- Okay.
Are you going to wear your lab coat?
Nope, and I'm going to grab this.
I ran a reverse image on the pendant.
A handy tool the police
didn't have 14 years ago.
Right, so that's why
they couldn't trace it.
Well turns out it's a
special services pin.
It's awarded to
firefighters in Bonavista.
The ABER is part of Jean Taber.
His family says he
gave this pin as a gift
to a young boy named Liam Ralston.
He used to hang around the station.
He left Bonavista years
ago and never came back.
So he could be our John Doe.
What else have you learned about him?
JESSE: Well, I've been looking
into Liam's old socials. Here.
These go back to 2012.
SARAH: Look, that's here in St. John's.
And he's wearing the pin as
a pendant around his neck.
- Click on the bottom one.
- [MOUSE CLICKING]
SARAH: No way. 13 years ago,
Liam was a trainee
at the fire institute?
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
MARK: Does the name
mean anything to you?
KESSLER: Uh, Liam Ralston?
No, doesn't ring a bell.
Well, he was a trainee here
back in 2012.
Any information you
have will be helpful.
I'll take a look.
- But that was way before our time.
- Right.
The files were digitized
last year, so
they're on here somewhere.
Can you include a list of the
other trainees from that year
- and anyone who worked here?
- Of course, of course.
Everything's set for
the smoke drill today.
Thanks for releasing the tower.
Oh, no problem. One more thing.
Have either of you ever
heard of the gauntlet?
[STANTON CHUCKLES]
KESSLER: It's a long time
since I heard gauntlet.
Why do you ask?
It may be connected to the case.
From what I know, the
gauntlet was a stupid tradition
back in the day. A bonding ritual
that the trainees used
to make each other do.
But it's been banned for years.
Uh, what exactly was it?
The object was to run up to the top
of the burn tower while it was lit,
ring a bell and then run
down but with no gear on.
Only fire suppressant
gel smeared on their skin.
[REX GROWLS]
KESSLER: But these rites
of passage are things of the past.
Send that list of trainees when you can.
Rex. [MARK CLICKS TONGUE]
Come on.
DONOVAN: We're sorry, Cody,
for what happened to you.
- You're releasing me?
- DONOVAN: Yes.
But there's something
that we want you to know.
SARAH: We just got a lead on
the possible identity of the John Doe
you were convicted of killing.
We think his name was Liam Ralston.
[SOFT MUSIC]
He's so young. Why didn't
anyone come looking for him?
Well, he had no family to speak of.
He was never reported missing.
We think the same person who killed Liam
may also have killed Judge Laughton.
Maybe because she was
looking into your case.
DONOVAN: Do you have any idea
who she was going to speak with?
No, every time we met,
she was purposely vague.
She didn't want to get my hopes up.
Although last time she
was upset about something.
- What was that?
- Hospital records.
She was trying to get her hands on it
but they kept dragging their
feet getting back to her.
LEILA: Can you time me this morning?
- Yeah, I will, sure.
- Because I want to do better
Detective! How can we help you?
For starters, you two can tell
me when you ran the gauntlet.
The gauntlet? Um,
I don't think I'm familiar.
Sawyer.
We really need to
start telling the truth.
A bunch of us did it. It was stupid.
We really had no business
fooling around with fire like that.
SAWYER: We were just looking
for something to bond us together
like they did in the old days.
You know, to prove you've
got the right stuff.
LEILA: Except for when I did it,
I touched a metal surface
reaching for the bell.
Which is how you got
that burn that Rex found.
LEILA: And if anyone found
out, we'd be kicked out for sure.
STANTON: Trainees.
Fall in.
- [phone chimes]
- SAWYER: Come on.
Sarah. What's up?
Cody told us Judge Laughton
was waiting on hospital records
as part of her
investigation into his case.
Now, it seems Liam was seen in the ER.
for a third degree
contact burn on his arm.
Didn't you say that Leila had one, too?
Yeah. From the gauntlet.
- You figured out what it was?
- Yeah.
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
- What's going on?
- JESSE: The institute sent over
the list of staff and
trainees from 2012.
SARAH: Joe's calling his
contacts at the fire department,
to see if any of the
names listed are active now
and remember Liam.
Did you find anyone who went
to the institute with Liam?
Yeah, rumour was that
Liam got into a beef
with one of the other trainees
over who could run the gauntlet fastest.
Word is that Liam won.
But the other trainee, Jimmy, lost it
and held Liam's arm
against a hot railing.
Hence the trip to the ER.
But Joe, there's no Jimmy
on this list of trainees.
I know.
Probably because the name
was removed on purpose
by Jimmy himself.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
I don't follow.
MARK: How could Jimmy
remove his name himself?

- Head of the fire institute.
- [REX BARKS]

MARK: So when they were both
trainees, Liam threatened
to turn Kessler in, ruining his chances
of becoming a firefighter.
SARAH: And Kessler, being aware
of the serial garage arsons at the time
silenced him and blamed
the death on Cody.
DONOVAN: Only he did a great
job of covering his tracks.
But not a perfect one.
I may have a way to prove him guilty.
But I'm going to need Rex's help,
- of course.
- [REX BARKS]
Detectives. What can I do for you?
Well, sorry to bother you, but, um,
the list you sent us was,
uh was missing a name.
Yeah, see?
For the 2012 class,
there are only nine names listed.
I think there should be ten.
Uh, strange. I'll take a look at it.
Could you take a quick look now?
[KESSLER SIGHS] I'm sorry.
Now is not a good time.
There's a training exercise
starting in the burn tower
and I want to be there to
make sure the kids are okay.
Of course. Mind if we tag along?

Go with the detectives. Now.
Stay where you are, Captain.

Fine.
We know that the missing name
on the 2012 list is yours.
We also know that you got into a beef
with Liam Ralston and that he was killed
in a fire that was
blamed on Cody Morrow.
We think you started that fire.
KESSLER: What on earth
are you talking about?
SARAH: We also know that Judge
Laughton discovered the truth
and reached out to you.
We believe you killed her
and then tried to dispose of
the evidence in the burn tower.
The body was there because of you?
How dare you accuse me of this?
You have no proof of anything.
Is that my tablet?
MARK: I've got to admit,
you were careful.
But not careful enough.
You left a partial
fingerprint on one of your gloves
when you went to Judge Laughton's
house to burn her files.
Rex found it.
And I am willing to bet
that if we test this
tablet back at the lab,
we'll be able to match the print.
- It's purely circumstantial.
- SARAH: Perhaps.
But enough, to get a warrant
to track the GPS on your phone.
MARK: Just how careful were you, Jimmy?
Are we going to find intersections
between your movements
and hers? Or, uh

this easy on yourself and
