Hudson and Rex (2019) s08e14 Episode Script
Heist for the Holidays (Part 2)
1
- [UPBEAT CHRISTMAS MUSIC]
- MARK: Previously, on Hudson and Rex
RADIO HOST: Well, it's five
days to Christmas, St. John's.
- Laura!
- I took an earlier flight.
I wanted to surprise
you! Merry Christmas.
SARAH: I'm not sure quiet St. John's
can compete with my mother's
usual big city festive season.
But I'm taking her to see that
marble sculpture at the cathedral.
Oh, the Veiled Madonna!
It only comes out at this time of year.
And as an art expert, your
mother's going to absolutely love it.
I know that man.
- He's not supposed to be here.
- [CAMERA PHONE SNAPPING]
MARK: This guy is a client of yours?
LAURA: I negotiated
a plea bargain for him
on money laundering charges.
And what about the buyer?
Used the name Bob Ladron.
Okay, mystery man, laundering
millions of dollars of his own money.
- Who is this Bob?
- He's a ghost.
[REX YELPS]
And why choose some random
contractor in Halifax?
I know how it might look
suddenly leaving Halifax.
You have to admit, the
timing's a little suspicious.
MARK: I need to see in that box.
MATTHEW: Please don't tell my family.
They don't know anything about this.
MARK: Rex, meet Holly.
Holly, meet
Yeah.
MATTHEW: I just wanted to give
Cooper a magical Christmas
before I go to prison.
- OLIVER: Nobody move!
- DONOVAN: Take it easy.
- [REX GROWLS]
- MARK: Easy, Rex.
OLIVER: Give me the box!
- [GUN FIRES]
- [GUESTS SCREAM]
[REX BARKS]
[ENGINE STARTING]
- [TIRES SCREECHING]
- Rex!
DISPATCH: All units, be on the lookout
for a black pickup truck.
Make and model unknown.
K9 officer last seen
in an open cargo bed.
- Driver is armed and dangerous.
- [HOLLY WHINES]
MARK: We've got to find Rex
and Holly before Christmas.
- [HOLLY WHINES]
- [SOFT MUSIC]
[UPBEAT THEME MUSIC]
[SOFT MUSIC]
MARK: Matthew survived the shooting
but is still unconscious.
And there's no sign of the shooter.
DONOVAN: I've called in
every available officer
but they may have already left the city.
MARK: Yeah, and disappeared
into the maze of back roads
- in Central Newfoundland.
- Mark, we are going to find him.
Do we have the cell footage
that Matthew's wife was recording
- when her husband was shot?
- Jesse's pulling it up right now.
JESSE: Right, here's the exact moment
that the shooter enters
the Tibb's Eve party.
OLIVER: Nobody move!
DONOVAN: You really think
this was a targeted hit?
MARK: Absolutely.
See how he zeroes in
on Matthew immediately,
demands the present in his
arms and then shoots him
- even though he's putting up no resistance.
- [GUN FIRES]
I don't think he had any idea
what was in that box or cared.
He certainly didn't know
it was an innocent puppy.
So do we think this guy just dressed up
like the mummer gang to lay the
blame for the shooting on them?
Not knowing that we had
Santa Pants here in custody?
But if that's true, then who sent
the hitman to take care of Matthew?
Well, everything points towards
the international criminal
that Matthew claims tricked
him into committing a crime.
The elusive Bob.
DONOVAN: We've only got a
picture of the back of his head.
So it's time to take a deeper
look at our family man from Halifax.
He may not be as innocent as he looks.
JESSE: All right.
I'll head back to the inn.
I'll collect his electronics
and check in with Sarah.
I'll drop by the hospital.
Maybe Matthew's wife knows
more than she's saying.
Yeah, we'll have helicopters
in the air at first light
looking for the shooter.
- We're going to find Rex.
- Yeah.
I know he can take care of
himself, Joe. I'm just
worried of the risks that Rex might take
if he's in protector mode.
I mean, he is not going to let
anything happen to that puppy.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[HOLLY WHINES]
PAIGE: So having the bullet
will help track the shooter.
Yeah, examining the unique striations
impressed into the
projectile from the barrel
could help determine if the weapon
was used in a previous crime.
You know, all these years, I never
worried about you and your work.
But now that I see how
dangerous it is, I
Mom, you don't need to be concerned.
Oh, that's no longer
an option, sweetheart.
But I've never been more proud either.
Oh!
Mom.
JESSE: I think Matthew's laptop
could help us track down
Rex and the shooter.
RAE: And little Holly, too.
I feel so sorry for Cooper.
Look
I'm sorry your whole inn
has turned into a crime
scene on Christmas.
It's what brought us back together.
- I actually have a confession to make.
- Yeah?
Remember how I sat behind
you in medieval history?
Uh-huh.
I prefer the Renaissance era.
I just hoped we'd become friends.
There's no crime in that.
[SOFT MUSIC]
MARK: Hey.
He's still unconscious.
- Nothing's changed.
- Okay.
I need to talk to Matthew's wife, Dawn.
I offered to represent her
as the wife of an existing client.
Of course you did.
We can talk out here.
Yeah, sure.
Dawn, Mark may have to ask
you some difficult questions.
But why question me?
Shouldn't you be out there
looking for this mummer gang?
We believe your husband may
have been targeted, Dawn.
That the crime was only staged
to look like the mummer robberies.
You think someone meant to kill Matthew?
MARK: Do you know why anyone
might want to harm your husband?
Could it have something to do with
this man, Bob?
The criminal Matthew
claims he only met once?
I would advise you to be forthcoming.
The shooter is still out there.
You need to protect your family.
Matthew is a good man.
He's a good husband and a good father.
But I questioned his reasons
for the sudden trip to St. John's.
You think he might have
come here to meet with Bob?
We have reason to believe
that he's also in St. John's.
I don't know.
But there were mysterious phone calls
before and after we got here.
Okay.
I confronted him
but the surprise puppy
seemed to explain all that.
But?
The night before last,
I woke up in the night
and Matthew was gone.
I looked all over the inn, but
He came back about an hour later.
How did he explain his absence?
He said he just went out for a walk
to look at the Christmas lights
soaking in the last of his freedom.
But you didn't believe him?
DAWN: I know Matthew
would never do anything
that might harm me and Cooper.
But I think he's in trouble.
And that it's getting worse.
Is my dad going to wake up soon?
Um
He's going to give me
a puppy for Christmas.
You know about Holly?
I saw her.
But now she's gone.
Um, we're going to do everything
we can to set this right.
Okay, Cooper?
- Promise?
- MARK: Mm-hmm.
My partner Rex is also on the job.
It's okay. It's going to be okay.
I promise.
[HELICOPTER WHIRRING]
PILOT: Copy that, Search One.
Starting the first leg
of the grid search.
[HOLLY WHINES]
[PHONE CHIMES]
Bob. All set.
Everything went as planned.
Is that so?
Well, I've got news for you, Oliver.
He's still alive.
Listen, uh
Look, I'm sorry. I saw that guy go down.
Just get to the rendezvous
spot and meet me there.
And Oliver, dump whatever
you took at the inn.
I don't want anything connected
to that botched shooting.
Yeah, will do.
[REX SNIFFS]
[REX SNIFFS]
[HOLLY WHINES]
[HOLLY YELPS]
[REX BARKS]
What have we got?
We've got helicopters searching
for Rex and the shooter
setting up a grid. Joe's supervising.
I ran the bullet striations
through the system
but no matches in the Canadian database.
I'm going international.
Okay, have we tracked
Matthew's movements
the night that he left the inn?
Through his cell phone and CCTV.
I pick him up intermittently.
He heads south from the inn.
Then I lose him in the park.
But then I pick him
up again on the other side.
There.
SARAH: But now he's
got some kind of crate?
MARK: And where's he going with it?
Straight uphill.
To the cathedral?
JESSE: Where he has a key
to the underground vaults.
SARAH: Why would he be sneaking
into the cathedral in the dead of night?
MARK: Because he plans
to bring something back out?
You mean steal from the church?
It could be, because 15 minutes later,
he leaves with the crate.
If Matthew did steal something,
what is it?
Remember how I said I was
taking my mom to see the statue
- they put on display for Christmas?
- Yeah.
- The Veiled Madonna.
- Veiled Madonna.
Veiled Madonna.
JESSE: Okay, a marble sculpture
by Italian artist Giovanni Strazza,
primarily resides at
the Presentation Convent.
But is transferred to the
cathedral for Christmas services.
So we think that Bob
got Matthew to steal the Madonna
and then he tried to have Matthew
killed to cover his tracks.
If we're right, we're a step
closer to catching these guys
and getting Rex home for Christmas.
[HOLLY YELPS]
[HOLLY WHIMPERS]
[HOLLY WHIMPERS]
[HOLLY WHIMPERS]
[UPLIFTING MUSIC]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
DONOVAN: You think Bob got Matthew
to steal the Veiled
Madonna from the cathedral?
Mark's on his way there now to confirm.
If the mayor was enraged
by the mummer gang,
she's going to be absolutely
nuclear over this one.
So Bob may be a high-end art thief?
Well, makes sense.
He steals the art, sells it, then
needs to launder the proceeds.
Well, we need to get an
ID and track this Bob down.
Jesse, send me a list
of suspected art thieves
who are still at large.
I'll get my mom to reach out
to other high-end designers.
You think an interior designer
would know an art thief?
Well, the art most likely ends up
decorating wealthy mansions.
Designers like to talk.
I couldn't track Matthew's
return from the cathedral.
He took a different route.
Now, uniforms they combed the park
but I'll get them to search
the inn for that lost crate.
I'm guessing you would have told us
if there was any sign of Rex out there?
[BIRDS CALLING]
[HOLLY YELPS]
[HOLLY WHINES]
[HOLLY BARKS]
FATHER FRANCIS: We discovered
the door to the vaults
unlocked this morning
but didn't imagine that someone
might have stolen the Veiled Madonna.
She's been venerated in
this parish for generations.
Okay, where and what
exactly are the vaults?
They're old tunnels
that connect various
buildings on the grounds.
It's a maze down there.
Now I understand the statue
resides at the convent
for the most part?
It's here only a few days
leading up to Christmas Eve.
I suspect the thief may
have been aware of this.
Would anyone outside of the cathedral
have access to the vaults?
There's an entrance-way on the grounds
but the key's been lost for years.
Does the name Matthew
Flannagan mean anything to you?
Not that I know of.
There was a Malcolm Flanagan
employed here for decades.
He was the groundskeeper.
Might have had a grandson named Matt.
I'll be sure to look into that.
The statue is supposed to be under here.
I think you'd better
brace yourself, Father.
[ANGELIC MUSIC]
She's here.
- I don't understand.
- No, neither do I.
But I think I know who
might be able to help.
[BELLS JINGLING]
RAE: You're looking for the wooden crate
that Matthew had?
Yeah, yeah, it's a bit
bigger than a bread box.
I always found that phrase odd.
- Bread box.
- Well, I mean,
it's from a popular 1950s game show,
sort of like 20 Questions.
You know, asking "Is it
bigger than a breadbox"
sort of became a running gag
because bread boxes, they were
ubiquitous in kitchens at the time.
And I realize now that
I'm just rambling so much.
[RAE LAUGHS]
Don't be sorry.
I like your explanations.
You know,
I'm sorry all this has ruined your
first holiday season in St. John's.
I'm trying not to
think about it too much
when everyone else is
going through so much worse.
Yeah, but you're
allowed to feel sad, too.
Hey.
I have a question for you.
Yeah?
Would you like to come to
my Christmas movie marathon?
Only if you're showing
"It's a Wonderful Life."
- It's my favourite.
- Really?
I am showing that!
Okay, I think an angel
just got her wings!
- Uh-huh?
- [BELLS JINGLING]
Okay, I'm
- I'm going to go back to work.
- Yeah.
Help find that mystery wooden crate.
- Oh, this is yours actually.
- Okay.
[CROWS CAWING]
[HOLLY WHINES]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[HOLLY SNIFFING]
Who's there? Bob?
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[PHONE CHIMING]
Bob, I'm here. All set.
Everything tying me to the
mummers is accounted for.
BOB: I'm on my way to
collect the merchandise.
And I wouldn't mess up
again if I were you.
[BOB HANGS UP]
[HOLLY WHINES]
PAIGE: So you have some mugshots
you want me to look at?
- Suspected art thieves.
- Oh!
Mostly surveillance photos.
Well, I have a very wide
circle of friends, Sarah
but I don't think it
includes out-and-out thieves.
[SARAH LAUGHS]
Here.
Take your time.
It can be difficult to
recognize someone out of context.
And some of these shots are years old.
- You just have to swipe.
- Oh.
Huh!
Oh, nobody looks particularly familiar.
But dubious characters and high-end art
do tend to go hand-in-hand.
Of course, I'm always very
careful when purchasing.
Make sure that there's
a clear chain of title.
SARAH: I remember being a little girl
and going to the charity
auctions with you at Christmas,
watching you outbid everyone else.
- It was very exciting.
- Well, I'm glad.
I'm sorry I wasn't home
with you more, though.
Don't be! Having a
successful, talented mom
was great inspiration.
Well, I wish I could be
more help here, but
Wait. Wait, this man.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
I think he used to sell high-end
art in London decades ago.
Could be he was stealing
that art himself.
What was his name?
Robert.
Robert Chisholm.
Last I heard, he moved to Monaco
and that was years ago!
Mark, hey.
I think we may have an ID on Bob.
Well that's great.
Fill me in when you bring the
forensics team to the cathedral.
It'd be great if Paige came, too.
I have something I need her to look at.
Okay.
MARK: So Bob really is an
international art thief.
Jesse got back to me,
confirmed that Malcolm Flanagan
was Matthew's grandfather.
Hmm! Who presumably showed him
a secret way into the
cathedral as a boy.
You really think this might be a fake?
Well, think about it. What better
way for Bob to cover his tracks?
Swap out the real statue for a fake
so no one notices it's even gone.
That's what I want your
mother to determine.
OLIVER: It's right in
here, safe and sound.
Well, I've reached a conclusion.
I have no doubt at all.
This is the real Veiled Madonna.
And it's priceless.
- This is the fake.
- What?
Yeah, no, I picked it up in the park,
- just like you said.
- The grain in the marble.
It's not right. This is the one Matthew
was supposed to leave
behind at the cathedral.
And if I don't deliver the real one
to the buyer on Boxing Day,
I'm a dead man.
And so are you.
- Are you sure, Mom?
- Yes, I'm quite certain!
You can't get this kind
of Carrara marble anymore.
- [PHONE RINGS]
- SARAH: So what was Matthew doing here
in the middle of the night?
Saying a Christmas prayer?
Laura.
Mark, Matthew's awake
and he's trying to leave the hospital.
I'm on my way. Come on, Rex.
We'll find him.
[BELLS JINGLING]
MARK: Matthew's not going anywhere.
LAURA: The hospital has
no right to keep him.
He can leave against medical advice.
Not if I have anything to do with it.
Matthew, are you sure
this is a good idea?
I'm fine, Dawn.
I just want to get us home to Halifax.
MARK: Not before you answer
a few questions, Matthew,
about your late night
trip to the cathedral.
You know about that?
Um, why don't you two come
wait in the other room?
Come on.
Tell me everything, Matthew,
why you really came to St. John's,
why you went to the cathedral
in the middle of the night
and your real relationship to Bob.
I'm sorry, Matthew,
but as your attorney,
I would advise you to remain silent.
- Excuse me?
- LAURA: I don't think
my client should say anything more
until we've had a chance to debrief.
You know we need to find Bob and Rex.
I know. And it it kills me
to be the one to get in the way of that
but I have a client
and his family to protect.
As a lawyer, I took an oath, Mark.
And as a police officer, I took one too.
Matthew Flanagan, you're under
arrest for breaking and entering.
- Give me your hands.
- It's all right.
I'll come willingly.
I have to come clean,
Laura, about everything.
But promise you will protect my family,
no matter what happens to me.
I'll have an officer
take them back to the inn
where they'll be safe.
Let's go.
[LAURA SIGHS]
BOB: Because of your incompetence,
I have to go and steal the real Madonna
and find a way into
that cathedral myself!
What if Matthew talked?
Could be crawling with cops by now.
You'd better hope he hasn't.
See,
that's why I don't
let anybody see my face
and live.
PILOT: Search One. Still
no sign of a black pickup.
Heading further north.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[SAD MUSIC]
Hey.
I'm on my way to a briefing.
I'm seeing what additional measures
we can implement in the search.
Yeah, Laura is having
a debrief with Matthew.
Maybe he can give us some
idea of where to look.
Right.
Not exactly the kind of holiday
any of us were planning on, is it?
- No, not exactly.
- Yeah.
You know, my mother,
she had it harder than me growing up.
The struggle was real.
Christmas was rough,
growing up without anyone or anything.
But she always had hope in her heart,
no matter what.
She always brought that with her.
And she didn't wait for it to come.
Don't be afraid to hope, Mark.
Yeah. Thanks, Joe.
[TOY SQUEAKS]
Matthew's ready to be interviewed.
MARK: Just to be clear about the
evidence we have against your client,
we have surveillance footage of Matthew
heading into the cathedral at night.
We have cell phone records
showing multiple calls
to an international burner phone.
Bob's perhaps.
And, it turns out
that your client's grandfather
who he visited as a boy,
was a groundskeeper at the church
who would have known the vaults beneath
like the back of his hand.
Thank you for being so
forthcoming, Detective.
Before you begin questioning,
my client has a statement to make.
I'm all ears.
[MATTHEW SIGHS]
I'd just like to say that
everything that I told Laura
and the judge in Halifax is true.
I only met Bob once.
And he tricked me into
breaking the law for him.
When did you learn that
he was an art thief?
Two weeks ago.
He contacted me out of nowhere
and threatened me.
Threatened you how?
He said I had to do a job for him
or my family would be in danger
once I start my prison sentence.
What was the job?
To come to St. John's
and steal the Veiled Madonna
and swap it out for a fake.
MARK: I'm not sure I understand.
We've had an art expert examine
the Veiled Madonna at the cathedral.
It's the real one.
I did everything I was
told until the last minute.
I entered the church through the vaults,
navigating the way my
grandfather taught me.
But when it came to
swapping the statue, I, uh
I just froze.
I mean, what kind of husband
and father had I become,
stealing from a church?
At Christmas?
And then, I realized how
perfect the replica looked.
And I decided to return
the fake to the drop spot.
You double-crossed an
international criminal
and stuck around for a Tibb's Eve party?
The most suspicious
thing I could do was run.
And Bob could have just as easily
tracked me down in Halifax.
The replica looks so perfect,
I thought he would just sell it.
And no one would know the difference.
And at no point did you think
you should inform the police instead.
Or your lawyer.
I
I was frightened
for Dawn and Cooper.
And I guess you didn't know
that the last part of
Bob's plan was to
silence you forever.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
- [GUN FIRES]
- But now I know,
none of us will be safe
until he is behind bars.
Sorry to interrupt.
A uniform just found
Holly's blanket on an off-grid road.
The helicopter is standing by
to take you to the location.
- MARK: Okay.
- I'll update the mayor.
- Good luck.
- Yeah, I don't need luck, Joe.
I've, uh I've got hope.
Be careful out there.
I need you all home safe
and sound for Christmas.
[ELEVATOR PINGS]
Hope there's room in the chopper.
For sure.
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
[HELICOPTER WHIRRING]
Rex!
Rex!
[SARAH SIGHS]
K9 unit's still en route
but that's definitely
two sets of paw prints.
Yeah, temperature's dropping fast.
But Rex wouldn't just head out
into the woods with a puppy.
No.
No, not without a plan.
But if he thought he could
get her somewhere safe
MARK: Let's see if we can track them.
BOB: There must be some way
I can steal the real statue.
We've got to go, Bob.
Like, we got to get
right off the island.
You said you had some
money being wired, right?
BOB: We will get the money and then go.
But not empty-handed.
- Well, let's just take this and go!
- Don't!
- Don't touch her.
- [HOLLY WHIMPERING]
What the hell?
Oh!
[THEY CHUCKLE]
- Hey, puppy!
- How did you get here, hmm?
[HOLLY BARKS]
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[REX BARKING]
Oh holy crap!
Put that down!
Is this what you want?
[REX BARKS]
Just give him the puppy man
before he tears us apart.
He won't do anything that might
let this little one get hurt.
Will you, huh?
[REX BARKS]
- MARK: There's the black pickup.
- [HOLLY YELPS]
[REX GROWLS]
- Oh, we've got company.
- Cops!
Take care of them, now!
- [HOLLY WHIMPERS]
- [REX GROWLS]
- [REX BARKS]
- [GUN FIRES]
MARK: That's Rex!
OLIVER: Aggh!
[REX SNARLING]
- Aus!
- SARAH: I've got him!
Rex!
MARK: Hey!
- Rex!
- [REX BARKS]
[REX BARKS]
Hey!
It's okay, it's okay.
We'll catch up to him.
What?
Oh!
It's Holly's blanket.
It's how we found you!
- Hey!
- [REX WHINES]
[REX BARKS]
Wait, he still has her.
Hey.
You did a good job, okay?
We'll do everything we
can to bring her back.
I promise you.
I promise you.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
JESSE: Hey! There's a good boy!
- Hey!
- Well, I hope
you've got lots of extra treats.
Hey, it's so great to have you
back in time for Christmas!
[REX WHINES]
Hey, what's wrong, Rex? Is he okay?
Oh, he's fine physically.
Until we get Holly back, I
think he feels like he failed.
[REX WHINES]
JESSE: No. No, you didn't fail, big guy.
You kept Holly safe despite all odds.
Now it's up to the whole
team to bring her home.
And we do that by finding Bob.
Uh, we've got a BOLO out on that SUV
but without plates,
it's hiding amongst hundreds
of others like it on the island.
The airport and ferries are covered.
DONOVAN: And our
shooter aka Oliver Guthro,
has been transported back.
Let's see what he has to
say about his elusive boss.
Mmm. Mmm?
Ah, it's okay, bud.
- We're happy you're home.
- [REX WHINES]
Yeah.
Things aren't looking
too good for you, Oliver.
We have footage of you shooting Matthew.
We found the mummer disguise you wore.
Not to mention your Glock 17.
And I'm pretty sure the bullet
we pulled out of the wall of the inn
is going to be a match.
I've got nothing to say.
You really want to go down for all this
and let Bob go free?
You're not worried that he
might put a hit out on you?
That's why I don't
let anybody see my face
and live.
[OLIVER SCOFFS]
MARK: Just like he did with Matthew.
You help me.
I tell the judge you cooperated.
Silence gets you nothing.
Where can we find Bob?
Look, I don't know where he is.
But he told me that he had
to find the real statue.
You really think he's going to try
and steal the Veiled Madonna again?
Told me he's a dead man
if he doesn't deliver
by Boxing Day, so
You mind answering a question for me?
What's that?
Where'd that dog come from?
Back in the building.
And that little puppy?
Let's just call them Christmas miracles.
DONOVAN: So Oliver is convinced
that Bob is going to try
to steal the statue again.
And today's the last day that the
statue's going to be on display
- at the cathedral?
- After midnight mass on Christmas Eve,
it goes back to the convent on
the other side of the grounds
where security is a lot tighter.
Do we think he's going to
try to steal it en route?
He's got to know we're
going to be watching.
It's a suicide mission.
So is failing to deliver
it, according to Oliver.
[DONOVAN SIGHS]
I learned more about our art thief,
Robert Chisholm.
This photo is from two decades ago,
when Chisholm was suspected
of dozens of heists.
- No mugshots?
- JESSE: No.
Never caught, never arrested.
- So he's got the résumé for the job?
- Yeah.
Why don't we simply ask the priest
to remove the statue early?
Just keep it under lock and key.
Right, the mayor is going to love that.
The centuries-old tradition
of Newfoundland mummering tarnished.
Not to mention the
city's most precious statue
isn't on display Christmas Eve.
MARK: We need to capture Bob tonight
before we miss our last
chance to put him behind bars.
