Hudson and Rex (2019) s09e02 Episode Script

Three's a Crowd

1
[SOFT MUSIC]
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
[SEAGULLS CRYING]
So, Rex was out of sorts all night?
SARAH: Yeah. Waiting
at the window.
Waking up at every sound.
Looking for Charlie.
I mean, I can barely
process that Charlie's alive.
I can't imagine what it's like for him.
Or you.
[SARAH SIGHS] I feel numb.
He uh he phoned last night
but I couldn't answer it.
Well, this is a good idea.
We get Rex to focus
on something familiar.
Exactly. Let's keep
everything else as
- normal and routine as possible.
- Right.
Okay, Rex!
You ready for some fun? Come here!
[REX SNIFFS]
- Go find the other one.
- [UPBEAT MUSIC]
There he goes.
- That's a snack. You're cheating.
- [SARAH LAUGHS]
[REX SNIFFING]
That is another snack.
Keep trying.
[REX SNIFFING]
Getting warmer!
- [REX BARKS]
- Atta boy.
Oh yeah, good boy.
- There you go.
- [CHEERFUL MUSIC]
CHARLIE: Looks like somebody's
getting their appetite back.
[DONOVAN CHUCKLES]
Well, the doctors told
me that I've got to eat
if I want to get out of here,
so, basically I'm just
- doing what I've got to do.
- [CHARLIE CHUCKLES]
What did they say about
you getting back to work?
Well, I say that I want to get
out of here as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, as soon as possible
is not quite a medical term, so
I'm really sorry this happened, Joe.
Don't be.
It's not your fault, Charlie.
It's just bad luck.
But I tell you, I'd do it
all again in a heartbeat
if it meant getting you back.
So
are you going to start
earning your keep around here?
Or are you going to extend
your year-long vacation?
No, I'm starting my
re-certification process today.
Medical. Firearms this afternoon.
Psych eval tonight.
Well, they've been briefed
on what happened in Belize.
- So, you're going to be fine.
- Yeah, I know.
I know, it's
just ready to get back.
Hmm.
If there's space.
We can use as many hands as we can get.
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
[WOMAN LAUGHING]
Oh yeah, he swears
there's nothing going on
but sure there's no one buying that.
Oh for God's sake.
Neighbour left her door wide open again.
She's got a mind like a sieve that
[WOMAN GASPS] Oh my God.
I'll call you back.
Samantha.
Samantha?
Oh my God! Oh, no.
- [SAMANTHA GASPS]
- [WOMAN GASPS]
Oh dear God!
Oh my God! You gave me such a fright!
What are you doing out here?
I think I dozed off.
You-you're drunk!
And you're covered in blood!
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Must have cut myself or something.
Okay. I just got to get to sleep.
Ughhh.
Why is this so heavy?
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Samantha, what is that?
And why is it covered in blood?
I don't know.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[UPBEAT THEME MUSIC]
[INTRIGUING MUSIC]
Thanks.
- JESSE: Hey.
- Hey.
Where's Mark?
Oh, he's on a call with Laura.
Said it was important.
- Okay.
- What's um
What's happening here?
Samantha Milner. 29.
Neighbour found her passed
out drunk covered in blood.
- She badly hurt?
- No cuts.
Blood belongs to someone else.
And this was found in her purse.
- So we might be looking for a victim.
- Mmm.
We're canvassing the
neighbourhood but nothing yet.
What does she say about it?
Claims she blacked out and honestly,
I wouldn't question her just yet
because she's pretty out of it.
[INDISTINCT POLICE RADIO]
Oh!
- Hey! Where'd you come from?
- [REX WHINES]
SARAH: Okay, let's uh
let's take her in and
get her sobered up.
We'll test the blood on her clothes.
If there's someone hurt
out there somewhere,
- we'll need answers fast.
- I'm on it.
- Oh, uh, which one is the neighbour?
- Right here.
- WOMAN: And that's when I saw a wrench.
- Okay.
- Hi, Lorraine.
- Oh.
Detective Sarah Truong.
Do you mind if I ask you a
few questions about Samantha?
Of course, yeah.
I thought she turned her life around.
She stopped partying.
She was studying for the bar exam.
And then six months ago,
it all went to hell.
What happened?
Well, she'd been dating this fella.
And then when they broke up,
she took it hard.
Started drinking all the time.
Crying in the street at 3 AM.
Do you know the name of the boyfriend?
Colin something. Lawyer, I think.
Just so critical.
SARAH: Do you think
she'd try to hurt him?
Well, it's somebody's blood on her.
[SAMANTHA SIGHS] I just want to go home.
Can I just go to sleep?
I suppose you never know
what sets someone off.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[ELEVATOR PINGS]
SARAH: Mark.
I got the lab results.
The blood on the wrench matches
the blood on her clothes.
They also confirmed bone fragments
in the teeth of the wrench.
So we're looking for a body.
Question is whether it
was murder or self defense.
Yeah.
I mean, I know people black out
but could she actually
have beaten someone to death
and not remember it?
Alcohol has that effect on some people.
Especially heavy drinkers.
Yeah, well, hopefully she's
sobered up enough to talk.
Heads up.
- SULLIVAN: Sarah! There you are!
- Chief Sullivan, hi.
SULLIVAN: Morning!
Well, I love a surprise as
much as the next guy but,
Charlie showing up,
that's next level. What?
You all holding up okay?
Uh, good so far.
- Still letting it sink in.
- I get it.
How's our Rex doing?
Yeah, a little out of
sorts, but he's good.
Canines need to know
who their partner is.
I hope he's not feeling too confused.
- No, no confusion.
- He's used to working as a team.
- I'm sure he'll be fine.
- Mmm.
Uh, is Charlie coming back?
He's going through the
re-certification so, we'll see but I
I want to talk to you privately.
Me?
You're not in trouble if that helps.
Good luck.
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
Hey, Jesse. Any luck tracking
down this ex-boyfriend, Colin?
Maybe. Been combing through her socials.
Found a bunch of photos of
this guy she'd been posting
up until about three months ago.
Okay, any last
name? Phone number?
I'm still working on it. I'm looking
through the Law Society records.
- What's going on in there?
- Yeah, I have no idea.
Where's Samantha?
Uh, she's parked in interrogation.
You're the best.
Are you feeling sober?
I guess.
I'm groggy, but
Yeah.
What happened?
Where did all that blood come from?
I was hoping you could tell me.
You want to fill me in on your night?
Ughh, I don't know!
I blacked out.
All right, well,
where were you earlier in the evening,
before you blacked out?
I don't know.
- Some bar downtown.
- Okay.
Did you walk? Take a cab?
We found you covered in
someone else's blood, all right?
This is serious.
And you need to try harder.
I can't remember.
Did you maybe visit your ex?
[SAMANTHA SCOFFS]
Why would you show me that?
Of course I didn't visit him.
I thought you couldn't remember.
I'd remember that.
Trust me.
What's Colin's last name?
Bassett.
- Mmm.
- [KNOCKING] [DOOR OPENING]
Got an address.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Get comfy.
I'll be back.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
JESSE: Okay, buddy.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
[REX GROWLS]
I don't like the look of this, Rex.
SJPD!
[REX SNIFFING]
[DISTANT CREAKING NOISE]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Stay.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Who the hell are you?
I was listening to a deposition.
And I'm getting renos done.
They left the door open.
You always bust into people's houses?
We are investigating a potential murder.
And you think I'm a killer?
Actually, we thought
you might have been the victim.
Okay, why? What's going on?
What can you tell me
about your ex, Samantha?
- Sam?
- Mm-hmm.
She's a murder suspect now?
- [REX WHINES]
- Classic.
Honestly
she's nuts.
- But she's too stunned to be a killer.
- Really?
Because from what I understand,
she was a pretty high-achiever
until she started dating you?
Oh, yeah.
It's all my fault, sure.
Okay, Colin.
When was the last time you saw her?
Couple of months ago at a bar.
Does she have any enemies?
Anybody she might have a grudge against?
No. She was too needy to hold grudges.
Okay.
Any friends I could talk to?
Any places she hung
out? Is there
Is there anything you
could tell me at all?
I mean [SIGHS]
last I knew she was
hanging out at the Foundry.
Pretty much the only place that
serves her anymore as far as I know.
Okay, thank you.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
JESSE: Ah, yes. The Foundry.
I went to a karaoke party there once.
Tried to sing Private Dancer.
You do not want to see that video.
- Well, you say that
- [JESSE LAUGHS]
Anyway, I contacted the bar owner
to get access to the outside camera.
Take a look at this, Mark.
There.
There's Samantha leaving the bar.
Time stamp says 11:55 PM.
Let's figure out where she went.
Get some uniforms to canvas
the area. I'll take Rex.
Okay.
[SOFT MUSIC]
[REX BARKS]
Hey, Rex! How're you doing, pal?
I've missed you, bud!
[MARK CHUCKLES]
I missed you, partner.
Yeah, hi, hi.
Hey.
JESSE: Well.
[REX BARKS]
Looks like he wants you
to have your old desk back.
[REX BARKS]
He's not the only one.
Bring it in, Charlie.
Oh!
Ah
Jesse, you know I'm not a hugger, right?
- It's got to be done.
- Okay, put him down.
- How are you doing?
- Yeah, I'm all right.
Just had my medical, my meeting with HR.
Figured I'd come up and
see Rex and all of you.
Uh, we were about to head out but, um
Of course. Don't let me stop you.
Okay. Rex, let's go.
[SOFT MUSIC]
[REX WHINES]
We've got to work,
buddy. Come on, let's go.
[CLICKS TONGUE]
Let me show you something.
Yeah.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
Okay, let's figure out
where Samantha was headed.
[REX SNIFFS]
You got it? Go track it.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFING]
[REX SNIFFS]
Yeah, looks like Samantha's all right.
Nice job.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX BARKS]
And we have a victim.
[REX BARKS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFS]
- [CAMERA SNAPS]
- MARK: We found the victim's ID on him.
Max Howett.
This heel looks like Samantha's.
Oh, it sure does.
What about the wound?
Consistent with the pipe wrench
but we'll know more once
the autopsy is complete.
I wonder where she got the pipe wrench?
Yeah, when Jesse went to Colin's house,
there were tools everywhere.
Maybe that's just a coincidence.
It's a pretty
- Thanks.
- common wrench.
Could have come from
anywhere. So, the good news is
there's a camera up here
and only one way in or out.
What's Rex picking up?
I don't know.
Hey, buddy!
What have you got there?
[REX SNIFFS]
Maybe we'll test the area.
See if he's coming up with something.
Yeah.
Okay, come on, Rex.
Come on.
Oh!
Everything okay with the chief?
Yeah! We'll talk about it later.
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
JESSE: I got some
more on our victim.
Max Howett, 31.
Works in sales and is
a co-owner of Apex Fitness Lab
along with Troy Eggers and Cheryl Wade.
Okay. Is Max married? Single?
Well, judging by these dating
apps, I'm guessing single.
Yeah, wow. That's a lot.
Yeah, from what I can tell, this
guy never ended a relationship
without starting three more.
Well, see if you can find some
kind of a connection to Samantha.
Yeah, about that. I tracked down
the footage from the alley entrance.
Take a look at this.
Max enters, just before midnight.
- And then
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING]
[COMPUTER WHIRRING]
fast forward to sixteen minutes later.
Look at this.
- There she is.
- Yeah.
And finally
There.
Samantha, with the wrench
used to murder Max.
Mm-hmm.
[JESSE SIGHS]
Yeah.
You recognize it?
Where did you find it?
A few blocks from the Foundry
where you got drunk last night.
And where we found this man,
lying on the ground.
Dead in an alley.
Who is that?
Max Howett.
Ring a bell?
No.
I've never seen him before.
Looks kind of similar to your ex.
Wouldn't you say?
Sort of.
I guess.
Well, maybe you made
that mistake last night.
It was pretty dark in that alley.
I didn't do that.
That's not possible!
I swear!
I didn't kill him!
Then I need you to try to
remember something that clears you.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Anything.
[SAMANTHA SIGHS]
[GUN COCKING] [GUN FIRES]
[OFFICER PATS CHARLIE'S BACK]
Not bad.
So, I pass?
With flying colours,
as far as I'm concerned.
Great.
Now, just the psych eval left.
Good luck.
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
Max wasn't just my business partner.
He was my guy since university.
We started this together, this business.
They founded the company.
I joined later to manage the books.
Can you think of anyone who
might have wanted to harm Max?
Max was passionate, you know?
But, uh he was
thoughtless sometimes.
Especially with women.
Did any of those women hold a grudge?
I'll send you a list.
What about this woman?
I've never seen her before.
Where were you two last night?
We were both here late.
I was working on budgets.
Troy was overseeing the
installation of some new gym equipment.
TROY: Yeah, it was exhausting.
CHERYL: It went
well into the night.
We left together around 12:30 AM?
I can send you the work
order and the contact info.
Was Max here at any point?
He left early to hit a bar downtown.
Any idea which one?
Um, I would check the Duke.
Or maybe, I don't know, the Foundry?
Those were his go-to spots.
Thanks.
[SIREN WAILING]
- Got you the good stuff!
- Oh.
Thank you.
- Oh, I needed that.
- [SARAH CHUCKLES]
How are you feeling?
Mmm.
You know, I'm fine.
I'm healing up nicely.
Chief Sullivan came
to see me this morning.
She wants me to step in
as acting superintendent of
Major Crimes while you're gone.
Oh, you knew.
- It was kind of my idea.
- [SARAH SIGHS]
The chief spoke to me
before she talked to you.
What did you tell her?
I didn't know what to say.
I mean, with Charlie back,
maybe now is not the
time to take more on.
Sarah, the department needs stability.
And this challenge
would be good for you.
Something for you to
sink your teeth into.
I can't believe you're telling
me I should take your job.
Hey. [LAUGHS] Just for a minute, right?
Also, it's better than
having some newbie come in
and move the furniture around.
Oh, I wouldn't guarantee that.
- Jesse, tell me you got something.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, you're going to want to see this.
- [COMPUTER BEEPS]
So, here's Max leaving 11:41 PM.
And look at this.
- Is that ?
- Samantha.
[MARK SIGHS]
You lied to us.
You said you had no idea who Max was.
Yet here you are making out with him.
- I swear I don't remember!
- Were you angry at being rejected?
- Is that why you followed him?
- No, no!
Okay, Samantha. You need
to help yourself here.
- What the hell happened?
- Oh I'm such an idiot!
Especially when I drink.
Maybe I did kill him.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
I don't know what I'm capable of.
[DRAMATIC PERCUSSION]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
JESSE: Mark, I'm not sure
I'm feeling Samantha for this.
Are you?
Not really but we've got to
keep following the evidence.
And she is the only lead we've got.
Yeah, but where did
that wrench come from?
And why would Max be waiting
in an alleyway for 20 minutes?
- Yeah, I'm not sure
- Hey.
Tests on the wrench came back.
No additional fingerprints, but
they found black synthetic
leather fibres on it.
- Gloves?
- SARAH: That would be my guess.
They don't match anything that
Samantha was wearing or carrying.
Okay, so somebody brought the wrench.
Somebody wearing gloves.
Well, that video only shows
two people in that alley.
Max and Samantha.
So, how did this other person
get in and out undetected?
I don't know. Maybe
somebody went in early,
hid and left after Samantha?
Okay, recheck the footage
but in the meantime,
Max's business partner Cheryl
sent me the name of one
of his exes to check out.
Gayle Novak.
Come on. [MARK CLICKS TONGUE]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
DR. TREMBLAY: Mr. Hudson?
I'm Doctor Tremblay.
Take a seat.
So, um, how does a
psych evaluation work?
Do I just tell you
everything that happened?
I would say it would take
a lot longer than an hour
for you to tell me
everything that happened.
For now, I'm interested in
how you're feeling today.
What's going on?
To tell you the truth, I feel like
that I should be more traumatized.
But I just feel like
that I was traumatized
the entire time I was in prison.
I couldn't trust anyone.
Couldn't communicate with anyone.
I mean, nobody even
knew that I was alive.
I lived every minute
like it was an hour.
And I just kept telling
myself to stay alive.
Get your life back. And now I'm back.
And I just feel so
happy.
Relieved.
Hopeful.
You sound good.
You're saying all the right things.
Are you sure you're
ready to be a cop again?
I never stopped being a cop.
Yeah, of course, yeah.
You very well may be.
But those you left behind,
they kept living while you were gone.
It might take them some time.
Do you have the patience?
[ETHEREAL MUSIC]
[SEAGULLS CRYING]
[SHIP HORN BLARING]
What did Max do now?
He was found dead in an
alley yesterday morning.
I can't say I'm surprised.
Well, I understand you were
in a relationship for a while.
[GAYLE SCOFFS]
Max strung me along for months.
Told me we were building
something together.
Turns out I was just a side
piece to his side piece.
So
When did you last speak to him?
It's been months.
And two nights ago,
- where were you?
- I lift,
every day. I'm in bed by 9.
Honestly.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC]
[REX SNIFFS]
[REX GRUNTS]
May I?
Go ahead.
What's the dog smelling?
The dog is trained to
detect illicit substances.
It's human growth hormones.
It's prescribed.
And, uh
these?
Weightlifting gloves?
Seriously, what do you think that I did?
May I take these in for testing?
Go ahead.
Keep your schedule open.
We may have more questions.
Okay.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
SARAH: You finding anything?
I've reviewed hours and hours
of footage of the alley entrance.
Both before and after the murder.
Nobody goes inside or
out except for Samantha.
Well, that's saying something.
Yeah.
You don't think it's her
you were seeing earlier.
- Sarah, I don't.
- Why?
I don't know! I don't know, maybe
Maybe because she reminds
me of my sister Crystal?
I don't know.
I know I should keep my
personal feelings out of it.
Well, it means you care.
You've just got to make sure
you're seeing things clearly.
[PHONE PINGS]
- What?
- Max's email records just came in.
Check this out. Max was
arranging a drug exchange.
- [DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
- There you go, bud.
Hey.
Hey. I just dropped some gloves
belonging to Gayle Novak
off at the lab for testing
as well as a vial of white powder.
Now, she says that it's
human growth hormone but,
- we'll see.
- Did you say white powder?
SARAH: Because we just got a
hold of Max's emails and learned that
someone was offering to sell
him a large amount of cocaine,
ketamine, and ecstasy.
- Who?
- JESSE: We don't know.
It came from a dummy account
but they told Max to meet
them in the alley at midnight.
- [DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
- [REX GRUNTS]
MARK: Oh, hey, Charlie.
Hey. Hey, pal.
Give me four.
Yeah, there we go!
JESSE: Charlie, Charlie,
what's the verdict?
Well, I just passed all my tests.
Signed my warrant card.
I'm an SJPD officer yet again.
Ah, congratulations!
- Thanks.
- No surprise there, man.
- Congrats.
- That's great. Congratulations.
[CHARLIE SIGHS] Uh, anyway. Joe
wants me back in Major Crimes but,
I figure you all deserve a say.
I can't just walk back in here
and expect everything
to be the same, so
I need your guys' blessing.
Oh yeah, let me think. Yeah,
of course we want you back!
Hey, we can never have
too many brains here.
[REX BARKS]
[CHARLIE LAUGHS] Yeah. Thanks, pal.
- How about you?
- Uh, sorry.
Sorry, I just realized that I, uh
I have to deal with something.
Can we talk later?
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
[ENERGETIC MUSIC]
Look.
Sarah will come around.
In the meantime, why don't
I bring you up to speed on the case?
Well, I'm technically
not Major Crimes yet.
You're still a detective.
Okay.
- Why don't you talk me through it?
- Okay.
- Come on.
- [ELEVATOR PINGS]
- JESSE: Sarah!
- I'll be right back.
- I just need a sec.
- No, Sarah, wait.
Wait. I'm just I'm
trying to understand.
Isn't this what we've all been
dreaming about for the last year?
Charlie's back!
I know.
Well, then what's the problem?
[SARAH SIGHS]
Jesse, I was starting to
feel normal again, you know?
After a year of questioning and
grieving and drifting. I
It's
It's been really hard.
And I just want my life back.
And he wants his.
Of course he does.
But I can't pretend the last
year didn't change things.
Jesse, it changed me.
And it's nobody's fault.
But it's the truth.
Maybe I'm in shock. I don't know.
I just need a bit of time.
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
Hey.
Any updates?
Yeah, the lab just called
and Gayle's gloves aren't a match
for the fibres on the wrench.
And the powder is prescribed
human growth hormone.
- Just like Gayle said.
- Okay. So we have zero suspects.
Except for Samantha.
Well, she's still your best
lead whether she did it or not.
She was there either during
the murder or right after
so, she definitely saw something.
Yeah, but she doesn't remember anything.
Why don't you just take
her back to the crime scene?
Maybe standing there will
bring her memory back.
MARK: Yeah, we could
use some fresh eyes on this.
Why don't you take her, Charlie?
Take Rex with you.
- [REX BARKS]
- You know, go with Rex and Jesse.
I'll, uh I'll talk to Troy
and Cheryl at the gym again.
See if I can shake out some more names.
You good with that?
Fine by me.
Also, Rex detected
something in the alley
but I couldn't tell what it was.
Maybe you'll have better luck.
Okay, great.
Rex.
Let's go.
[REX GRUNTS]
It's okay, buddy.
Go with Charlie.
[REX BARKS]
CHARLIE: Let's go, pal.
[PHONE RINGS]
Hey, honey, how are you feeling?
Ah, yeah, I haven't told anyone yet.
I know. It just hasn't
been the right time.
Absolutely, I will.
I will.
I love you too. I'll see you later.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
JESSE: Try to focus
on the other night.
Does anything look familiar?
SAMANTHA: No.
Not really.
Just relax and take a breath and
see if it triggers a memory.
I think I remember
walking down the street.
Okay.
So stay with that.
How'd you feel?
Like I was going to be sick.
But then I heard something.
[METAL CLANGING]
And I walked toward it.
Okay, then what?
My heel broke.
I think I fell down.
I don't know for how long.
There was blood on my hands.
I saw the pipe wrench and
I grabbed it for protection.
That's all I can remember.
Are you sure you didn't see anyone else?
Hear any heavy breathing
or running away?
CHARLIE: That's okay.
We've got time.
Patience is on our side.
See if something comes to you.
[MAN GRUNTS]
CHERYL: Detective?
Any news on the case?
Yes, actually. Um, did Max deal drugs?
God, no. I can't see it.
I mean, he used drugs from time to time.
But never to excess.
Well, we know that someone
offered to meet him in that alley
to sell him a sizable drug cache. Pills.
Coke, ketamine.
Max used to throw these invite-only
parties for clients here.
A lot of drugs got passed around.
Troy hated it.
Then, somebody cut their
hand on the climbing wall.
And the boys got sued. And lost.
Nearly cost them the gym.
That's when they brought me in
to help them get back on their feet.
You think Max was
planning another party?
I can't see it.
I mean, if he did something
to risk the gym again,
I don't think Troy
could ever forgive him.
[REX BARKS]
What have you got, partner?
[REX GROWLS]
[REX BARKS]
[REX BARKS]
[DOOR LOCK BEEPS]
Hey, hey!
Look what we found!
MARK: Thank you so very much.
[PHONE HANGING UP]
Is that a climbing carabiner?
