Reentry

1
Okay, and let's keep ice on that
knee for another ten minutes.
- Be back to check on you soon.
- Okay.
When was the last time you ate?
The launch, I guess.
Couldn't eat if I tried.
I know it's rough,
just waiting for news.
How you holding up?
Honestly, being here
with you guys, it helps a ton.
Well, that, and not talking
about how I'm holding up.
Yeah, copy that.
Hey, are you guys free?
- Uh, where do you need us?
- Uh, Mr. Gomez.
He was knocked over by a delivery bot.
I think he has a sprained ankle.
- Okay, we'll take care of him.
- [RAVI] Hey.
Got two new volunteers for you.
Nurse Patti and lifeguard Stew.
Good. Get them started on yellow tags.
- You got it.
- Thank you.
- How's her shoulder?
- [CHIMNEY] It's dislocated.
If you're okay with it, Eddie
here can pop it back into place.
- You don't want to handle this, Cap?
- No, you got this, Eddie.
Hey.
- Mom.
- [GASPS] You're back.
My sweeties.
How's Mama?
[SIGHS] She says hi.
Come on, I'll tell you all about it.
What's the latest on Hen and Athena?
They made it to the ISS.
But?
There's no way of knowing
what's going on
or what shape they're in.
So, they're in a black box
in the middle of space.
In the middle of a debris field.
Maybe no news is good news?
I hope so.
- [GRUNTS]
- [YELLS]
[YELLING]
[GRUNTS]
[ALARMS BLARING]
Everybody okay?
Uh-huh.
- [PARKER] Yeah.
- Still here.
- 'Thena, you good?
- [ATHENA] Yeah?
Yeah. Considering
we're on a space station
that just took a thousand bullets.
- So then let's get the hell out of here.
- [STANTON] Agreed.
So what's the plan?
We were hoping you could tell us.
You mean Tripp Hauser sent you here
- with no further instruction?
- Tripp didn't send us.
[HEN] My wife works for PAAL.
She reached us with a Meridian
sat phone and directed us here.
Meridian doesn't work this high.
We know. She said that we could
come here and wait for help.
[STANTON] Help is not coming.
All our comms are down, nav is shot,
and in 44 minutes, that debris field
either skewers us or knocks out our last
heat exchanger and turns us
into human ice cubes.
We climbed aboard a sinking ship.
Isn't there an escape pod or something?
The Soyuz, but it only rides four.
So we strip it down,
and I'll rig up some more seats.
Could that work?
Yeah, it could.
Just one problem.
I tried the Soyuz
after the second debris hit.
It won't launch.
The docking ring was warped
during the first hit.
It's stuck.
So how do we un-stick it?
- Normally, I'd use the Dextre.
- The Dextre?
That's the two-ton robotic arm.
We saw it on the way in.
That thing with the dead guy?
His name is Engineer Sean Joyner.
He was doing maintenance on the arm
when the storm first hit.
He never got to finish.
[HEN] So, someone needs to get out there
- and finish whatever he was doing.
- Yeah.
I'll do it.
Captain's got a punctured lung.
I'm the only other one
who's been NASA trained
- for a spacewalk.
- [PARKER] No offense,
but that's when The Brady Bunch
was in its original
- broadcast run.
- [HEN] And we need you here
working on the escape capsule
We don't even have an hour.
Well, who then?
- [INHALES]
- I'll do it.
Now, let's get to work.
We're running out of time.
[ATHENA]
What makes an everyday hero?
Hell if I know.
I don't consider myself a hero,
everyday or otherwise.
I'm just a working mom.
I put on a uniform,
but it could be a waitress or
a mail carrier uniform.
It's a job, that's all.
It is not like in the movies.
You spend a lot of time on
patrol just waiting, watching,
paying attention.

[MCCLUSKEY] Still waiting on that order?
Uh, just waiting on the coffee.
She was making a fresh pot.
- Ah.
- Cops and donuts.
My God, McCluskey, did you
coin the damn stereotype?
Two things as a cop you never
want to need or be without:
your gun and a cruller.
- Oh.
- I got my breakfast glazed
and my post-lunch Boston cream
that's my mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
And your pre-dinner heart attack.
- Here you go.
- Thank you. Cinnamon, please.
- And you forgot the bill.
- [SERVER] Uh, there isn't one.
Paid by the guy
over there in the corner.
Damn, he's coming over.
Oh, God forbid.
Aren't you the one who keeps complaining
about your female partners coupling up?
I have abandonment issues.
I eat my feelings, but
I'm a romantic deep down.
Morning, Officer. Carter, is it?
Thank you, really, uh,
but this wasn't necessary.
Oh, I disagree. I see you in
here most mornings protecting,
so I figured the least
I could do is serve.
Black coffee, two sugars,
and a cinnamon chaser, right?
Some might call that stalking.
Or some might say
I'm an attentive listener.
Don't mind Carter here.
Uh, her idea of flirting
these days is reading Miranda.
Oh, maybe that's the reason I
don't see a ring on that finger.
It's really not.
- [CLEARS THROAT]
- Or maybe you just
haven't met a man skilled
in the ways of courtship.
Now, me, I'm polite, I bring flowers,
mothers love me.
My mother's in Florida.
Come on, McCluskey. We're on the clock.
Thanks for the coffee.
[ENTRY BELLS JINGLE]
[MCCLUSKEY] Trying to
figure out what was wrong
with that guy back there.
Liked to hear himself talk.
When was the last time
you went out on an actual date?
None of your business.
I am no Sunday school teacher.
I do fine.
[MCCLUSKEY LAUGHS]
I didn't ask you when
the last time you knocked boots
with some random guy at last call.
When is the last time
you allowed yourself to
to get serious with someone?
I mean, what has it been?
Seven years since Emmett died?
He didn't die.
He was murdered.
And it's coming up on eight years.
Don't you think it's time
to get back out into the world?
[SCOFFS] I'm in the world
five days a week with you.
I would like to see you
meet someone nice.
Why do you care?
Pure self-interest.
It's better to ride with a
partner who has a reason to want
to make it home at the end of the day.
Says the guy who has
two ex-wives and no pets.
[LAUGHS] Believe me, when I was married,
I had a lot less incentive
to want to make it home.
- [BOTH LAUGH]
- Carter!
[HORN BLARING]
[CAR ALARM BLARING]
I'm gonna check on the driver.
You call it in.
Dispatch.
Sir?
Buddy, you okay? Hey.
Hey, buddy.
- He's dead.
- Heart attack?
He's been shot.
- Where'd it come from?
- I have no idea.
Dispatch, be advised,
shots fired at the intersection
of Channel and Fifth.
One motorist fatality.
Request backup and an RA unit.
[DISPATCHER OVER RADIO]
Copy. Units on the way.
What do you think? Drive-by? Car-to-car?
Maybe.
Maybe it came from
one of these buildings.
Well, he was traveling eastbound.
It went right across his windshield,
so it probably happened as he
was approaching that light.
So down there, maybe?
Hey.
Look at that.
There's no sign of a driver.
Engine's running.
Keys in the ignition.
Hey, Carter.
Take a look at this.
You know a lot of
armored messengers using
450 caliber armor-piercing bullets?
That's about 2,000 rounds in here.
[SIGHS]
Truck's not the target.
No. It's the getaway vehicle.
Dispatch, be advised.
We've got a possible 211 at CalAm Bank,
one block east of our last position.
Suspect is likely armed.
High-grade, armor-piercing ammunition.
[DISPATCHER]
Copy. Backup units are en route.
What do you want to bet
there's a bullet hole
in one of those windows?
McCluskey, wait for backup.
[CHUCKLES] You are my backup. Come on.
- [WOMAN CRYING]
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
I clock four suspects.
12 to 15 civilians.
- Dispatch, where's that backup?
- Moments away, Officer.
Come on. Come on.
[MCCLUSKEY] Hey, hey, hey.
You take downstairs. I got up.
[ROBBER]
Let's go. Let's get out of here.
Hurry. Come on.
Let's go. Come on.
- [ROBBER 2] Nice shot.
- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Check it. Move!
Damn it.
[ROBBER 3] The hell do we do?
[ROBBERS CONVERSING INDISTINCTLY]
Hey. LAPD! Drop your weapon!
[SIRENS WAILING]
- [GUNFIRE CONTINUES]
- [OFFICERS SHOUTING]
[ATHENA] Let me take a look.
[MCCLUSKEY GRUNTS]
- Oh, my God.
- Yeah. I can tell
without even looking.
I got to get you out of here.
[GUNFIRE CONTINUES]
I'm no hero.
I've worked with a few over the years,
but the reason I'm sitting here
right now and they're not
The real heroes
are the ones who never made it home.
[WHIRRING]
[TRICIA] This is it?
Soviet technology.
Well, how the hell are we all gonna fit?
Well, shop class and astrophysics.
We're adding a few hundred pounds.
Weight is speed, and speed is heat.
You're saying that we're all
gonna burn up in the atmosphere?
[LEWIS] I'm saying we're gonna have to
strip this down if we don't want to.
Take a pound out
for each pound we put in.
Already seems pretty bare-bones.
Yeah, well, compared
to your private jet,
but still, there's backup life support,
backup fuel supply, that's maybe
a buck 50 right there.
Is it just me, or do we always
end up needing the backup?
The only thing
we need right now is luck.
Come on, give me a hand.
Did he have a family?
Excuse me?
Joyner. Did he leave anyone behind?
Two kids. Nora and John.
His wife, they were trying
to make things work.
Now
your tether is your lifeline.
[SIGHS] Clip in.
Follow the track to Joyner
where you'll retrieve
your replacement pin.
All you have to do is insert
the last pin, and the arm
should be functional.
[HEN] Sounds simple enough.
Except everything, including yourself,
is moving at twice the speed of sound.
You get hit by debris,
even a particle
it's game over for all of us.
[ATHENA]
Of course there are risks.
Comes with the job.
You know that when you sign up,
but you're not signing up
for the danger,
if that makes sense.
Why did I sign up?
I felt I could make a difference.
Simple as that.
[GUNFIRE]
No, no, no, no.
Look. Look, look, look. Hey.
Stay with me. Stay awake for me.
[EXHALES]
[ATHENA OVER RADIO]
This is Officer Carter.
Command, do you copy?
- Athena. It's Rick.
- Rick.
We're pinned in the plaza on
the south side of the conflict.
McCluskey's down.
We're gonna need
an emergency EVAC.
Immediately.
Yeah, that's gonna be a minute.
We can't get over there right now.
We're a little outgunned at the moment.
Where are the snipers?
Snipers are assuming their positions.
Air support?
They had to get out of here.
- They were being shot at.
- We rolling SWAT?
They're on their way.
They're about 15 minutes out.
McCluskey doesn't have 15 minutes.
I'll let command know.
McCluskey, you got to get up right now.
You got to get up right now.
- Are we going someplace?
- Yes.
The hospital, but you have
to get up right now.
You just have to make it to the street.
I will help you. Come on.
Okay. [GRUNTING]
Wait. Wait.
Wait, I We're just gonna walk out?
[ATHENA] No.
We're gonna drive.
- Come on.
- [SIGHS] Okay.
On three. One. Two.
- Three.
- [GRUNTS]
[EXHALES]
Do we think that was important?
I hope not.
[SIGHS]
God, if we get home,
I am so breaking up with Tripp.
He did blast us into a space hurricane.
And left us for dead.
'Cause to Tripp, we're just a write-off.
You know, I used to think
that he was an awkward genius?
Good with numbers, bad with people.
Now, I think maybe he's just bad.
You know what Tripp gets me
for Valentine's every year?
- Hmm?
- Stock.
- Oh. [LAUGHS]
- I own one percent
of his company, but
he can't remember my star sign.
Gemini.
You said it a few times in training.
Yeah. It's not that hard.
[HEN] Athena.
Why are you wearing that?
Because NASA's suit is better
than ours for a spacewalk.
- I said I would do it.
- [SIGHS]
I heard you.
Can you give us a minute?
You got it.
[ATHENA] That astronaut out there
has a family who thinks
he's coming home,
- and so do you.
- [HEN] 'Thena, so do you.
[ATHENA] And I plan on seeing them soon.
But if something goes wrong,
May and Harry are grown.
I won't risk your kids
losing their mother,
or Karen losing the love of her life.
You can't decide what risks I take.
Okay? You shouldn't even
be up here. I made you
- come with me.
- And I said yes
because there's nothing left
for me on Earth.
[HEN] That's not true.
You have people who are willing
to do anything for you.
- And I have more in Heaven.
- That's not Heaven,
Athena, th-that's space.
It's cold and-and it's empty.
He's not out there, Athena.
You know I lost him, too, right?
But not like I did.
I'm not doing this
because I'm altruistic,
I'm doing it because I'm selfish.
I can't lose anybody else, Hen.
All I have left is me.
Now, you can try
and tear this suit off me,
but it'll take you ten minutes
to put it on,
and we're running out of time.
Don't make me come out there after you.
[AIR HISSING]
Has it been worth it? Yes. I think so.
You do this job
because you want to make
the world a more ordered place.
Not just for the people
you meet on the streets,
but for the people you love.
You want it to be a better,
safer place for them.
They're really the reason
you're out there,
and they are absolutely the reason
you find a way to make it home
at the end of the day.
For me, it's about my friends,
my children, my husband.
[STANTON OVER COMMS]
Steady going, Sergeant.
All you have to do is remove
the faulty pin
from the Dextre arm,
and replace it with the one
Engineer Joyner should still
have on him.

[STANTON OVER COMMS]
That's it, Sergeant. You're doing fine.
An inch at a time.
How many minutes
till that debris comes around?
About 20 minutes.
[GRUNTS]
[ATHENA] So where's this pin?
In the pouch on his right side.
Got it.
Athena! Incoming!
[GROANS]
[GRUNTS]
- Are you okay?
- I'm fine.
What's next?
- You're going to the elbow joint.
- Copy.
My tether's caught.
I can't reach.
Go back, untangle it.
There's no time.
Athena, what are you doing?!
I'm guessing she doesn't

Yes, but the flow rate is low.
She's not getting enough O2.

[YOUNG ATHENA]
You need to let go.
You've hung on for so long.
Been through so much.
You could just
Float away?
Wouldn't that be so nice?
Away from all the pain.
All the loss.
So much loss.
And for what?
What's it all been for, anyway?
For all the moments in between.
No matter how far apart they may be.
Like
stars.
There's so much dark
between them.
Cold. Empty.
Forever.
But as long as there's light
there's hope.
They keep us going, those stars,
those moments.
Like a dance between lovers or
a laugh between friends.
They pull us along,
they warm us, they
blaze
with all that's good
and tell the darkness, "Not today."
[HEN] Athena!
Grab the arm, Athena!
Pain is the price we pay for joy.
And it's a fair trade, a good deal,
because any second,
instant, moment of joy
is like a diamond in the darkness.
Like stars.
But letting go and floating away
is not how you get to the next one.
Then how do you?
By reaching out.
And going together.
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
Let's go home.
[LEWIS] All systems are
up and ready, Captain.
No damage to the flight controls.
There are only four seats.
[LEWIS] Oh, there's five.
Captain Stanton needs to ride prone.
Henrietta said she needs
to monitor her bum lung
on the way into Earth orbit.
We need to adjust the pressure
as we descend,
or else her lung will explode.
Okay, but there's six of us.
Yeah.
I'm staying behind.
- Wait, what do you mean?
- Why?
Someone has to be here to
operate the Dextre arm,
otherwise nobody's going anywhere.
Lewis, you might not survive.
Then again, I might.

NASA has confirmed
that not only are all five
Macronauts alive and well,
but also rescued from the ISS
was Captain Naomi Stanton.
[REPORTER] Tripp, whose idea
was it to send the Inara
to the International Space Station?
[TRIPP] I won't say
that it was my idea.
There was a lot of
very smart people working
very hard to make sure
this mission was a success.
And none of those people are
up there on that podium.
But I will say no one here
ever gave up hope.
And that's what
space exploration is about.
Hope,

that that Soyuz module

for that battered Soyuz.
As it reenters
at 17,000 miles per hour
