9-1-1 (2018) s10e02 Episode Script
Fire in the Hole
1
We're in downtown LA
where a massive sinkhole
has apparently become
something else entirely, a volcano.
You can see ash in the air and lava
following a brief eruption
that's left everyone wondering,
how could this happen?
How, indeed, Jackie?
Geologists are saying the tectonic
fault system surrounding Los Angeles
is at its most stressed
in a thousand years.
This tension has forced magma
from the Earth's mantle
up some 20 miles through what
scientists call "a highway from hell."
That's right, and authorities are
advising all residents to evacuate,
especially those
in low-lying sections of downtown
- where lava could potentially flow.
- Sorry, folks, gotta move, gotta move.
- Let's go.
- [HARRY] Clear the area!
If you do not have a vehicle,
I need you to use your legs!
- Hey, is this your van?
- [REPORTER] Yes.
Great, I need it. I can get
seven in here. Let's go! This way!
- This way, people! Keep moving! This way!
- [CROWD SCREAMING]
Director Worrell. Dead on arrival.
You need to get out of here
before it erupts again.
Across the street!
Everyone, across the street!
Maddie, who's in charge?
[MADDIE] That is what I'm trying
to get to the bottom of
in between dealing with
this whole volcano thing.
I guess I'm IC down here.
Officer, let's pull them back.
Come on. This thing could blow
any second. Let's pull back.
It's not fake news. It's very real news.
What do you need on the ground?
I need downtown empty,
and I need the manpower to do it.
We've sent every firehouse that we
can without deserting the rest of LA.
Well, then, we cast a wider net.
We bring in mutual aid.
Yes, I am trying to locate
the deputy department commander.
Unfortunately, my conduit to her
was hit with a lava bomb,
and LA has no protocol for a volcano.
We have earthquake and oil spill.
Which do you want?
Both. We'll collate. Chim, I am
gonna have to get back to you.
Yes, please.
All right, come on across the street.
Everybody, put your phones down.
Go home. Watch Dante's Peak.
It's fair to middling,
but it won't get you killed.
- Let's go. Let's go.
- [HEN] Head west! Head west!
We've got traffic backed up
a quarter mile!
[CROWD SCREAMING]
Everybody, under the rig!
Go!
[ALL CLAMORING]
What the hell?
It's heading downhill!
And so are we.
- 118, let's move!
- [HARRY] Go! Go!
[FIREFIGHTERS CLAMORING]
[SIRENS WAILING]
[HORNS HONKING]
- [DRIVER 1] Hey! Move it!
- [DRIVER 2] I can't go anywhere!
[HONKING]
I don't know, babe.
I've barely moved an inch.
Just tell Dr. Hoffman I'm sorry.
[PARTNER] Don't
stress about Dr. Hoffman.
Just get yourself out
of that mess, okay?
There's, like, dust in the air,
and I heard these huge booms earlier.
[PARTNER] Booms? What do you mean booms?
- Paige? Paige? Is everything okay?
- [DRIVER 3] Let's go! We gotta go!
No, something's not right.
I think I should go.
- [PARTNER] Paige?
- I don't know.
I love you.
[DRIVER 4] This way!
[PEOPLE CLAMORING]
[GASPS]
And yes, ladies and
gentlemen, I believe
that is a new PR for
student nurse Grant.
Why are we timing ourselves
on IV insertions?
Is there some prize
I've been qualified for all these years?
No prize. It's just a good metric
to measure how I've been doing.
Okay? As I get better, I get faster.
More useful metric:
How many people did I not kill today?
Hey, I haven't killed anyone yet.
[REPORTER] …a volcano.
You can see ash in the air,
and authorities are advising
all residents to evacuate,
especially those in low-lying sections…
Partial thickness scald burns
on the legs and lower torso.
Push ten milligrams of morphine.
Okay, uh, let's get him into trauma two.
Call Plastics and notify the burn unit.
We're about to be inundated.
[PARAMEDIC] I got a mom and daughter,
ages 52 and 20,
both with acute shortness of breath
from smoke inhalation.
- They were three blocks from the eruption.
- Eruption?
In Bay 3.
Grant, where you at?
[STAMMERS] On my way.
[IAN] Come on, come on, come on.
[PEOPLE SCREAMING]
Dispatch, 118 on scene at the…
river of lava.
I never thought I'd thank God
for LA's endless street construction.
Yeah, these K-rails
are keeping it contained.
Mostly.
But how long until
it gets to those gas pumps?
And the 30,000 gallons
of gas they're sitting on.
Not to mention all the gas
in the trapped cars.
Every one of them's
a bomb waiting to go off.
Maddie, what's the status on mutual
aid? We need more resources out here.
Yeah, I can't get anyone on the line.
The Office of Emergency Management
is apparently out of the office.
We could really use some dozers
from CAL FIRE out here.
Look, the best I can do is
Engine 144 and two RAs.
Wait. Hey, could the 129 double up
on their run from Presbyterian?
- I'll tell them to pack them in.
- [MADDIE] Three RAs.
Yes, I will let you know
when I can send them.
Copy that.
We can use all the help we can get.
Hey, get us out of here!
Everyone, listen very carefully.
If your cars are still running,
turn them off.
Cut the ignition immediately.
I'm going to need everyone who is able
to carefully climb on
to the roofs of your cars.
Climb out and wait?
Are you kidding me?
No. I am not, sir.
Everybody,
stay on the roofs of your vehicles.
We do have a plan,
and we will come get you out.
[EDDIE] So, what's the plan?
You ever play that game The
Floor Is Lava? Well, the floor is lava.
[COUGHS]
- [GRUNTING]
- [ELECTRICITY CRACKLING]
[PANTING]
[PERSON COUGHING]
Hello?
[PERSON] Over here! [COUGHING]
[ATHENA] I'm coming to you!
Let me help.
- [COUGHING]
- Are you hurt?
Do you feel like
anything might be broken?
No, no, I don't think so. I got my bell
rung pretty good, but I'm okay.
Okay. Do you know your name?
Harvey. I'm with operations management.
I just came down here
to do a tunnel integrity inspection.
And it's a fail, by the way.
Yeah, I can see that.
Hey, lady,
what the hell are you doing down here?
Believe it or not,
I'm working a jewelry heist.
You're a jewel thief?
[SPARKS] No, she's a cop.
Matthew Sparks?
I'll tase her!
I-I thought it was my Taser.
Hello, Sergeant Grant.
Sergeant Grant and I
used to work together.
For two days.
For two days.
And it's not Sergeant
Grant. Not anymore.
It's Detective Grant now.
- No kidding?
- [HARVEY COUGHING]
I guess both of us landed on our feet.
All right, Harvey,
how do we get out of here
before this whole thing's on top of us?
Well, we can't go back
the way we came in.
- Do you have a radio?
- Yes, yes.
- [SPARKS] Hey, boss?
- [HARVEY] Yeah?
[SPARKS] It's thrashed.
Perfect.
When they don't hear from us,
they'll come looking, right?
Hey, listen.
So I don't know how to tell you this,
but we're nobody's priority
right now, okay?
Does anybody else know that you're here?
Do you think I would climb down a hole
without letting anyone know?
I figure my partner's
already been contacted.
Let's get you up.
- [RUMBLING]
- Whoa, whoa, whoa!
[GASPING]
Though I'm not sure that I
want to stick around and find out.
[OFFICER] Move!
Two blocks, take a right!
- [SIRENS WAILING]
- [HORNS BLARING]
Hello. Anybody in here?
LAPD, this is a mandatory evacuation!
We got to move now!
[GROANS]
Please remain calm.
Our firefighters are gonna evacuate
the closest cars.
Do not move.
We will come to you.
Hey, is our ladder rated
for that kind of heat?
Guess we'll see.
[BUCK] Hey, hey, Rav. Don't look down.
Oh, God.
You looked down, didn't you?
Hey, fire captain!
We're cooking out here!
Listen, I know it's hot out there.
We're gonna get each one of you,
but we're gonna do it safely,
one at a time.
- Screw that. [GRUNTS]
- [SCREAMS]
- [RAVI] Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Hey!
- Oh, my
- Dumbass.
- There's always one.
- Sir, please don't move.
- [BUCK] Hey, Cap. I can get to him!
Sir, please remain where you are.
Quit waiting for these
morons to save you.
This place is gonna
blow. Save yourselves!
Stay right there, Buck!
[CROWD SCREAMING]
Damn it.
It's like a sauna in here.
How much further?
[HARVEY] Oh, not too far.
We tack east to the
construction at Union.
There's an opening to the street
and an emergency landline
that we can use in case
we get into some trouble.
You know that there's more
than 20 miles' worth of tunnel
beneath downtown Los Angeles?
Do we have to traverse them all?
No, no, they're not all connected, but
all the municipal buildings have them.
For instance, they
run from the courthouse
all the way to the Hall of Records.
Then during Prohibition, they
dug tunnels out of the speakeasies
to get away from the police raids.
I mean, there must be, like,
20 miles of those.
Just don't make a wrong turn.
[LAUGHS] Don't worry
about it. Man, I know
these networks like
the back of my hand.
[BUCK] Take it easy, take it easy.
We got you. Big step. There you go.
- [RAVI] Moving quickly and safely.
- [BUCK] Yeah, I got you.
I got you, man.
Take my hand.
[HARRY] Come on, right here, sir.
Nice and easy.
Let's get you looked at, miss.
[GROANING]
[MADDIE] Hey, Chim, are you there?
Maddie, please tell me
you got more ladder trucks for me.
Yeah, I got something…
an automatic call from a smart watch.
Said that the wearer was involved
in a high-speed car crash
just a few blocks from you.
Maddie, there aren't any cars driving
fast enough for a crash around here.
- Did you try the owner?
- No answer.
And even weirder,
it came from inside the building.
The apartment complex, Second and Maple.
The one next to the volcano?
[SIGHS] Damn it.
Harry, Hen.
I need you to get back to Maple.
Possible car crash,
possibly a malfunctioning smart watch.
- A watch?
- Dispatch will give you the info.
I want you to get in and get out.
All right? Let's move.
- Got you, Cap.
- Grab a Halligan.
Let's try not to get Pompeii'ed.
[JOSH] Maddie, I think I know
why OEM hasn't picked up.
- Why?
- Because they're here.
We need your Wi-Fi
and a conference room.
- What happened to yours?
- It's full of lava.
This is now citywide command.
I'm really glad you're here.
LAFD is spread thin.
We're gonna need reinforcements.
Pasadena, San Diego,
and Nevada if this gets worse.
Wait, you're a geologist, right?
Is this gonna get worse?
It's not getting better.
Really? [SIGHS]
Detective Grant, um…
Look, I just wanted to say…
I-I-I…
I've always regretted the way
things ended with us.
You know, not the incident.
Obviously, I regret that,
- but the way that I spoke to you.
- Forget it.
[SPARKS] No, it was…
it was disrespectful,
and it was uncalled for
and, hey, you were right.
I wasn't cut out for that job.
[ATHENA] Well, not everybody is.
But like you said,
you landed on your feet.
I mean, right hand
to the LA Metro Chief of Operations.
I mean, that's got to be
a pretty plum gig.
[SPARKS] Yeah. I got lucky.
Well, actually,
my uncle pulled a few strings.
Right now, I'm only making
a little more than I did on the force.
But you know, the benefits are great
and there's, uh, an opportunity
for advancement, so…
I mean, in a way,
washing out of the LAPD
was the best thing that
could have happened to me.
Yeah, well, that's good. I'll make
sure to mention that to Martha Bailey.
Well, who's Martha Bailey?
That would be the woman who you shot.
- Right.
- She's had four surgeries, lost her job.
She's got a GoFundMe.
The department lawyers
told me not to contact her.
Yeah, they told me the same thing.
- [SIGHS]
- You-You…
You checked up on her?
Seemed like the decent thing to do.
[HARVEY] Hey, what are you guys doing,
huh? Come on, you're
having a card game?
Let's go, let's go.
I can only model from
previous eruptions.
- Hawaii, Iceland, Texas.
- Texas?
Austin. Ours is bigger.
Given LA's fault lines and the cone's
growth rate, we need everyone.
I spoke with Deputy
Department Commander.
That's great. What did she say?
That she's in Mallorca.
So, who's in charge?
[WRIGHT] According
to the deputy department commander,
authority is delegated to… you.
No. That-That can't be right.
You did spot the warning signs.
Dead vegetation, fleeing animals,
visual anomalies.
All volcanic precursors.
Okay, you were Ty's deputy.
Why can't you do it?
Even if I could jump
chain of command, no.
I did 12 hours once
when Ty had a colonoscopy,
and I wished it was me on the table.
Mutual aid is locked and loaded,
but it's up to you
to pull the trigger.
As acting head of OEM,
you have to authorize it.
[SIGHS] Okay. Do it.
Congratulations.
You just spent $40 million.
Why do people keep promoting me?
I have no earthly idea.
[PEOPLE CLAMORING]
Over here. This way. Dispatch said
southwest corner of the building.
[HARRY] I don't see a car crash, do you?
[SIGHS] Well, I guess it's the watch,
but we got to follow
it up just in case.
[SIGHS]
This is the apartment.
Okay. [GRUNTS]
- [POUNDS ON DOOR]
- LAFD!
We're coming in!
- [ALARM BEEPING]
- LAFD. Is anyone home?
Hen.
[PANTING]
Help me!
- [HEN] What's your name?
- Leona.
I'm Hen. This is Harry.
How did you find me?
Your watch called us.
Glad it's good for something other
than telling me I don't sleep enough.
- Harry's gonna take your vitals…
- [LEONA] Okay.
[HEN] …and then he's gonna try
to cool this thing down.
I'm gonna check in with Dispatch,
all right?
Dispatch,
this is Paramedic Wilson from the 118.
We're on site at your smart watch
collision at Second and Maple.
Tell me there isn't
a vehicle inside that building.
[HEN] Car would've been
an easier problem to solve.
Looks like a lava bomb
hit the apartment above
then came through the ceiling.
It hit our smart watch owner.
She's fused to the floor
with severe thermal injuries.
How severe?
- Can you check her pedal pulses?
- Yeah.
[LEONA PANTING]
I'm not sure how to
Start with the space between
the big toe and the second toe,
then feel your way up the leg,
but very gently.
It's easy to miss.
Yeah.
- How did you know that?
- She's a doctor.
Internist.
Sixteen years.
Pedal pulse is weak on both sides.
[HEN] All right, Dispatch.
Real severe. We're gonna need an RA unit
and heavy rescue.
I might be able to get you
one of those things,
but probably not the one
you're hoping for.
[HEN] How long is the list
for heavy rescue?
You'd be number six.
Hen.
Does she have that much time?
Put us on the list.
I'll make sure she does.
Hey, Buck.
What's the status
on this gas station of doom?
Well, it looks okay,
but we should really move fast.
Hold on.
You gotta keep your mask on, okay?
Just like that. All right.
[DOG WHINING]
Hey there, bud.
Where'd you come from?
"Service dog."
Who do you serve?
His tag says his name is Biscuit.
- It's a service dog registered to
- [CHIM] Ryland Howard.
Well then, where's Ryland Howard?
He's not in triage.
Hey, Cap, look at his paws.
I think this brave boy
came through the lava.
[CHIM SIGHS]
So his owner must
be in one of those cars.
Ryland Howard, age 25.
DMV record says
he drives a red Honda Civic.
Copy that. 118, anyone see a red Civic?
Uh…
Negative.
[RAVI] Everything kinda
looks the same out here.
Dispatch,
any chance Ryland called 911 today?
Uh, no, but he called last year.
Uh, rescue 136 took him to St. Ray's.
It says his pots flared up?
POTS syndrome, not the cookware. Got it.
Guessing this is a seizure dog.
- It alerts him when he's triggered.
- [LINDA] By what?
Linda, if this guy's having a seizure,
we need more eyes.
[EDDIE] Or a nose.
Ryland!
Ryland!
Ryland, can you hear me?
Ryland!
Ryland, you out here?
Ryland!
[GRUNTS]
Over here? All right. [GRUNTS]
Ryland! You out here?
[BARKING]
This way?
Great. This way.
[CROWD SCREAMING]
[EDDIE] I got you.
I got you. I got you, buddy.
I got you, bud.
Here?
Found him, Cap. Not a red Civic.
A gray Ford Fusion.
Okay, buddy. [GRUNTS]
Go comfort Ryland,
okay, buddy? Good job.
Go keep Ryland company, bud.
Okay.
Please be open.
Please be open. [GRUNTS]
Uh, thank you, God.
Ryland, if you can hear me, I'm LAFD.
I'm here to help.
All right.
Okay.
There we go. That should help
feel a little better, all right?
Okay. Hang in there, Ryland.
Okay.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
What happened?
You had an episode,
likely a non-epileptic seizure.
Just breathe slowly
through your nose, okay?
You're gonna be okay.
Thanks to this guy right here.
Attaboy, Biscuit.
All right.
Hey, what happened to the Civic?
It's in the shop.
This is a rental.
I hope you got the insurance.
Do you know that the
city of Los Angeles,
they got 20 miles of tunnel
underneath downtown Los Angeles.
- Yeah, you said that already.
- I can't tell where we are.
I mean, everything
sort of looks the same.
Because it is the sa
The graffiti.
We've been here before.
I mean, it's the same tag,
but it was on the other wall.
[SCOFFS] No, that's because we were
walking in the other direction.
We've been going in circles.
Hey, boss. You think, you know,
maybe you got a little turned around?
Oh, don't be stupid.
I could find my way around
these tunnels with my eyes closed.
Well, maybe we should try it with
your eyes closed because we are lost.
Who is she?
Oh, Lord…
[ATHENA] Huh?
Concussion?
Mmm. I'm no medic, but that
left eye looks a little sluggish.
Harvey, you don't remember
that we met earlier?
And you are?
- Doesn't matter who I am.
- She's with the LAPD.
LAPD? Kid, what are we doing down here?
Director Worrell sent
us down here to do
a tunnel integrity
inspection, remember?
- The sinkhole was getting bigger.
- Yeah. Did we do one?
There was an earthquake.
[SPARKS] Maintenance
40 is half caved in.
You got clunked on your head,
and now your radio's smashed.
We gotta go up to
the site under Union.
There's an emergency
landline up there.
Yeah, that's where we were headed
before you forgot
where you were going.
Really?
[SIGHS] Do you know
where you are right now?
Yeah. Maintenance 36 East.
Can you get us to that emergency phone?
Go straight to the T junction,
we hang a right,
and then a series of lefts
for two city blocks.
Okay. We go right and then we keep left.
- Yeah.
- All right, let's do it.
- Great.
- [HARVEY] Thanks.
Uh…
- Am I brain damaged?
- A concussion, maybe.
Or a little short-term memory loss.
Let's get you out of here
so we can get you checked out.
Officer, thank you.
My wife would appreciate that.
- Thank you.
- Okay. Well, let's get you home to her.
[HARVEY] Oh. It's like a sauna in here.
Seems like he's gonna be okay.
Yeah. Uh…
His wife passed away three months ago.
[SIGHS] Okay.
Maybe don't mention
that detail just now.
Harvey.
Acute respiratory failure's arriving.
- Miller, make sure ICU's ready.
- [MILLER] I'm on it.
- Bay 5 just opened up.
- Good. Doc, take the corneal abrasions
and put him over in
Bay 5. And call Ramos.
Tell them to ask med-surge
- if they can spare beds.
- [DOCTOR] Right away.
This isn't slowing down anytime soon.
We're running out of room.
- Okay, what we got?
- [PARAMEDIC] Female, mid-30s…
[HORN HONKING]
- Jenkins, get him to ICU immediately.
- [JENKINS] Go ahead, right in.
Somebody help us, please!
- Where are you hurt?
- Not me, it's him. He's covered in burns.
- [IAN] I need a gurney.
- [MAY] Gurney!
- It's okay, baby. It's okay.
- [IAN] Nice and easy. Brace yourself.
- [GROOM GROANING]
- What's his name?
[BRIDE] I'm Gabrielle, this is Johnny.
- He's my husband.
- All right, congratulations.
We're gonna help
your husband, all right?
Looks like partial and full thickness
burns on about 50% of his body,
at least what I can see through the tux.
[MEDIC] Code blue. We have a code blue
in here. All hands on deck.
Okay, uh, all right. He needs fluids
and pain meds. You
good to start a line?
O-Of course, yeah, I can do it.
Okay, great. You got it. You got it.
I can do it.
It's not the big day
that you guys planned, huh?
We were at the park taking pictures,
and all of a sudden
it started raining fire.
I think I heard somebody say
it was a volcano.
- [GROANS]
- Uh, can you make a fist for me?
I was so worried
about my dress, and he
threw himself on top
of me to protect me,
and I just… I really
need him to be okay.
It's just the start of our lives
together. I need him to be okay.
You brought him here, and we're
gonna take good care of him, okay?
[SCREAMS]
Johnny! Oh, my God, Johnny!
Johnny! No, no, no, no, no, no!
- No, Johnny! Johnny! Johnny!
- Hey, hey, hey.
- [IAN MUMBLES]
- [GABRIELLE] No, Johnny!
[IAN] Johnny, listen to my voice.
Okay? Listen to my voice.
You should let go now.
- [GABRIELLE CRYING]
- [IAN] It's going to be okay…
[PANTING]
Dispatch, what's the update
on our extraction status?
You're solidly in the number four slot.
That's progress, right?
- [HEN] Leona?
- Is she in shock?
Peaked T waves. Hyperkalemia.
Her potassium's too high. It could be
It's my kidneys.
Rhabdo.
Okay. Uh, Wha… What can we do for that?
You keep pushing fluids.
Add calcium, albuterol, bicarb.
- Also, I'm feeling… kind of warm.
- Uh, like a fever?
[LEONA MUTTERS WEAKLY]
Uh… That's not a good look.
[HEN] The edge of your wound
is yellow-green.
- It's likely bile from
- [LEONA] My kidneys.
And my liver. My
body's poisoning itself.
[SIGHS] Listen, Leona, we can still
treat this, okay?
Help will be here soon.
Please.
Please, let's be honest.
Even if they were to walk
through that door right now,
the odds of me getting to an OR
are at best…
50-50.
Getting out of one?
Half that.
Ever seeing
the outside of a hospital again?
Near zero.
You can't know that though.
Sixteen years…
makes me a pretty good guesser.
Leona, what are you saying?
I'm refusing medical treatment.
This isn't right. No.
We can't just give up.
You're so young.
You're gonna save a lot of people.
I'm just not one of them.
I understand.
Medical Control agrees
with your assessment of the situation.
No extraordinary measures will be taken
unless you authorize it.
Our goal now is to just…
keep you comfortable.
Thank you.
[CHIM] Hen, Harry, what's your status?
We're still at the
apartment. It'll be a
minute before we
can get back your way.
[CHIM] Copy. Keep me posted.
Could use the extra
hands if you have 'em.
Babysitting me…
Is it a good use of your talents?
Or your time?
We're not gonna leave you here alone.
There's nothing…
you can
I can stay.
Cap needs your hands more than mine.
- No.
- [HARRY] Yes.
Go.
Save a life.
That's what I'd do.
Air support says ash
is killing their rotors.
Okay, we're gonna
have to ground LAX too.
I got the head of MTA on the line.
Tell him that his buses
are now evac shuttles.
Maddie,
we've got a tilt of 4.5 microradians.
Please tell me
that means it's slowing down.
From the rate that lava's pumping,
flows are gonna burn
through the Arts District
and hit Soto Vista within the hour.
Soto Vista,
that's like 80,000 people, right?
- Eighty-six. And then there's the wind.
- Of course there's wind.
It's whipping up structure fires and
spreading it northeast
to Reina Heights.
But we're strapped.
We don't have
enough resources to send to both.
Then it's your decision.
Which one do we defend?
You mean, which one do I let burn?
[BUCK] LAFD, anyone out here?
Anyone left?
- [PERSON] Here.
- Okay, I'm gonna come to you.
Are you able to climb out?
[PANTS] Um, yeah.
[BUCK] Okay, I'm coming to you. [GRUNTS]
Okay, hey,
we're gonna have to make some big jumps.
Are you okay with that?
Um… [PANTING]
…I'll try.
[GRUNTS] Okay.
Okay. Take my hand.
My name is Buck.
I'm gonna get you out of here.
- Paige.
- We're gonna do it one car at a time.
You're gonna watch me, follow me. I'm
gonna help you every step of the way.
Okay, here we go.
- [GASPING]
- There you go. There you go.
You're good. Okay, first one.
It's okay. You good?
- I don't think I can do that again.
- Uh, sure you can.
Just like hopscotch or jump rope.
Ever seen a pregnant lady jump rope?
Hey, so, do you have a name picked out?
Um, yeah. We're gonna call her Penny.
Penny, that's beautiful.
For this next jump…
- We're gonna do this next jump for Penny.
- Okay.
[BUCK] It's a big one.
But you can do it.
Paige, I won't let you fall.
For Penny.
One, two, three! For Penny!
- I got you. I got you.
- Oh, my God.
I can't believe I made it.
Okay.
From here, it's, uh…
- It's pretty easy, okay?
- Okay.
Just one step, one step at a time.
- Okay. Down you come.
- Okay. I can do this.
- Yes, you can.
- Okay.
Okay.
[PAIGE] Oh. [CRYING]
- [BUCK] It's okay.
- [PAIGE] No, it's not. We're trapped.
Hey, Cap, we got a problem.
Yeah, I see it.
Get on top of that green truck.
Ravi, give me 45 degrees. Eddie,
get your turnout. You're going up.
Get the life gun. Let's go! Let's move!
We have to go this way?
No, right now we just need to get higher
and away from the heat
till they figure out a plan.
Get up here.
High as we can. High as we can.
Double-time it, Eddie! Let's go!
[BUCK] Just wait for it.
Watch out!
- He's a pretty good shot.
- Okay.
[GUNSHOT]
[BUCK, PAIGE PANTING]
Okay, okay. Kinda close.
[EDDIE] Sending down the line first,
and then the harness.
Okay, got it!
Hey, guys, guys, forget the harness.
Ravi, when I tell you,
you hit that winch.
[CHIM] Let's move. Let's go!
- Lift up your arms.
- All right. What are we doing?
[BUCK] You're gonna hold on to me
tight as you can.
- Paige, do not let go, okay? Hold on.
- Okay.
Ravi!
[MACHINE WHIRRING]
[BOTH PANTING]
[PAIGE] Did we make it?
You're gonna have a pretty great story
to tell Penny one day.
[BOTH LAUGHING]
- Let's get you to triage.
- Thanks, Buck.
You are one lucky bastard.
[GENTLE MUSIC PLAYS]
[RAVI] Hey, Hen. You missed it.
Buck was like Tarzan versus the volcano.
I'm sure she can catch it on TikTok.
Hey, we got some yellow tags with
some burns that need to be looked at.
No red ones?
Not a lot of middle ground with lava,
it turns out.
Hey. Where's Harry?
[LEONA GROANING]
I lost my first patient… [SNIFFLES]
…when I was just a little bit older
than you. [CHUCKLES WEAKLY]
Mrs. Levitt.
Cardiac arrest.
One year after I got out of med school,
she just died right…
in my hands.
[EXHALES] It was a Tuesday.
[COUGHS, SNIFFLES] Funny, isn't it?
The things we remember.
And that's the moment you learn…
that you don't get to save everybody.
[CHUCKLES] You're doing a hell
of a lot better than I did.
[SIGHS]
I don't feel like I am.
[LEONA] I mean, you're…
You're sitting here with me
right now, right?
How can you be so brave?
Do you mind if I drop it for a minute?
Bravery is so… so exhausting. [SOBS]
[LEONA SOBBING]
I'm not sure what I'm…
I'm more afraid…
afraid of.
That I'm going to meet my maker,
or that there is no maker.
I'm… I'm so sorry. [SNIFFLES]
I couldn't…
Nobody could.
Harry, you're gonna carry
a… a lot of these in your career.
Pack your grief wisely.
[ALARM BEEPING]
Doctor's orders.
[ALARM INTENSIFIES]
[STEADY BEEP]
[JOSH] DWP cut power to Glendale.
Their mayor wants to give you an earful,
but I told him you…
Didn't hear a word I just said.
Glendale's dark. Mayor's mad.
Melinda's looking for you too. [SIGHS]
She needs a decision.
Reina Heights is hilly. [SCOFFS]
Newer builds, farther from the eruption,
fewer people.
And Soto Vista is
90% residential working class.
Only two-thirds of the people
have left their homes.
Homes built in the 1920s.
If it goes up,
it'll be the whole neighborhood.
Total devastation.
So we dispatch there.
No.
We make sure that
it's evacuated, and we…
We let it burn.
We save Reina Heights because…
we can't put out a volcano,
but we can contain the fire,
and if we don't, it's Mount Washington,
El Sereno, Alhambra.
Chain reaction. [SIGHS]
And you know what,
maybe we get lucky and the wind lets up.
Or we lose half the city
before we can even make a dent.
- Are you sure?
- [SNIFFLES] No.
I am not sure of anything today,
and I do not feel lucky.
Okay, I'll tell Melinda.
No. [SIGHS]
[BREATHES DEEPLY]
This is on me.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]
[SIGHS]
[SIGHS]
Is he okay?
He's doing better.
[PANTS] I'm sorry.
I-I thought I knew how to do it.
- I've been practicing forever.
- [IAN] I know.
Piece of silicone
ain't the same as a human being.
I know I-I messed up.
[IAN] Do you?
Well, I screwed up the IV insertion.
Your first screw-up was not telling me
you hadn't done an IV before.
I didn't wanna get kicked off the floor.
[IAN] This is a teaching hospital.
Okay, you tell me you don't know
how to do something, I teach you,
but I can't teach you what I don't know
you need to learn.
If you can't be honest with me about
that, then I will
kick you off the floor.
It won't happen again.
Good. Come on.
[SIGHS] Wait, you said first screw-up.
There were others?
Just this.
All right, it's okay to make mistakes,
but you can never abandon your post
and feel sorry for yourself.
Understood.
[HARVEY] Oh, man.
[ATHENA] How you doing, Harvey?
- [HARVEY] Okay.
- [ATHENA GASPS, SCREAMS]
[RATS SQUEAKING]
[PANTING]
Why do I feel
like they know something we don't?
We are running out of options.
Come on.
[LAUGHS] See? Told you. Back of my hand.
Where's the way out?
There's a workers' entrance
at the back down there.
[ATHENA] Then let's get down there.
- Come on!
- [RUMBLING, EXPLOSION]
[ATHENA SCREAMING]
[ALL COUGHING, GROANING]
Should have gone with the rats.

We're in downtown LA
where a massive sinkhole
has apparently become
something else entirely, a volcano.
You can see ash in the air and lava
following a brief eruption
that's left everyone wondering,
how could this happen?
How, indeed, Jackie?
Geologists are saying the tectonic
fault system surrounding Los Angeles
is at its most stressed
in a thousand years.
This tension has forced magma
from the Earth's mantle
up some 20 miles through what
scientists call "a highway from hell."
That's right, and authorities are
advising all residents to evacuate,
especially those
in low-lying sections of downtown
- where lava could potentially flow.
- Sorry, folks, gotta move, gotta move.
- Let's go.
- [HARRY] Clear the area!
If you do not have a vehicle,
I need you to use your legs!
- Hey, is this your van?
- [REPORTER] Yes.
Great, I need it. I can get
seven in here. Let's go! This way!
- This way, people! Keep moving! This way!
- [CROWD SCREAMING]
Director Worrell. Dead on arrival.
You need to get out of here
before it erupts again.
Across the street!
Everyone, across the street!
Maddie, who's in charge?
[MADDIE] That is what I'm trying
to get to the bottom of
in between dealing with
this whole volcano thing.
I guess I'm IC down here.
Officer, let's pull them back.
Come on. This thing could blow
any second. Let's pull back.
It's not fake news. It's very real news.
What do you need on the ground?
I need downtown empty,
and I need the manpower to do it.
We've sent every firehouse that we
can without deserting the rest of LA.
Well, then, we cast a wider net.
We bring in mutual aid.
Yes, I am trying to locate
the deputy department commander.
Unfortunately, my conduit to her
was hit with a lava bomb,
and LA has no protocol for a volcano.
We have earthquake and oil spill.
Which do you want?
Both. We'll collate. Chim, I am
gonna have to get back to you.
Yes, please.
All right, come on across the street.
Everybody, put your phones down.
Go home. Watch Dante's Peak.
It's fair to middling,
but it won't get you killed.
- Let's go. Let's go.
- [HEN] Head west! Head west!
We've got traffic backed up
a quarter mile!
[CROWD SCREAMING]
Everybody, under the rig!
Go!
[ALL CLAMORING]
What the hell?
It's heading downhill!
And so are we.
- 118, let's move!
- [HARRY] Go! Go!
[FIREFIGHTERS CLAMORING]
[SIRENS WAILING]
[HORNS HONKING]
- [DRIVER 1] Hey! Move it!
- [DRIVER 2] I can't go anywhere!
[HONKING]
I don't know, babe.
I've barely moved an inch.
Just tell Dr. Hoffman I'm sorry.
[PARTNER] Don't
stress about Dr. Hoffman.
Just get yourself out
of that mess, okay?
There's, like, dust in the air,
and I heard these huge booms earlier.
[PARTNER] Booms? What do you mean booms?
- Paige? Paige? Is everything okay?
- [DRIVER 3] Let's go! We gotta go!
No, something's not right.
I think I should go.
- [PARTNER] Paige?
- I don't know.
I love you.
[DRIVER 4] This way!
[PEOPLE CLAMORING]
[GASPS]
And yes, ladies and
gentlemen, I believe
that is a new PR for
student nurse Grant.
Why are we timing ourselves
on IV insertions?
Is there some prize
I've been qualified for all these years?
No prize. It's just a good metric
to measure how I've been doing.
Okay? As I get better, I get faster.
More useful metric:
How many people did I not kill today?
Hey, I haven't killed anyone yet.
[REPORTER] …a volcano.
You can see ash in the air,
and authorities are advising
all residents to evacuate,
especially those in low-lying sections…
Partial thickness scald burns
on the legs and lower torso.
Push ten milligrams of morphine.
Okay, uh, let's get him into trauma two.
Call Plastics and notify the burn unit.
We're about to be inundated.
[PARAMEDIC] I got a mom and daughter,
ages 52 and 20,
both with acute shortness of breath
from smoke inhalation.
- They were three blocks from the eruption.
- Eruption?
In Bay 3.
Grant, where you at?
[STAMMERS] On my way.
[IAN] Come on, come on, come on.
[PEOPLE SCREAMING]
Dispatch, 118 on scene at the…
river of lava.
I never thought I'd thank God
for LA's endless street construction.
Yeah, these K-rails
are keeping it contained.
Mostly.
But how long until
it gets to those gas pumps?
And the 30,000 gallons
of gas they're sitting on.
Not to mention all the gas
in the trapped cars.
Every one of them's
a bomb waiting to go off.
Maddie, what's the status on mutual
aid? We need more resources out here.
Yeah, I can't get anyone on the line.
The Office of Emergency Management
is apparently out of the office.
We could really use some dozers
from CAL FIRE out here.
Look, the best I can do is
Engine 144 and two RAs.
Wait. Hey, could the 129 double up
on their run from Presbyterian?
- I'll tell them to pack them in.
- [MADDIE] Three RAs.
Yes, I will let you know
when I can send them.
Copy that.
We can use all the help we can get.
Hey, get us out of here!
Everyone, listen very carefully.
If your cars are still running,
turn them off.
Cut the ignition immediately.
I'm going to need everyone who is able
to carefully climb on
to the roofs of your cars.
Climb out and wait?
Are you kidding me?
No. I am not, sir.
Everybody,
stay on the roofs of your vehicles.
We do have a plan,
and we will come get you out.
[EDDIE] So, what's the plan?
You ever play that game The
Floor Is Lava? Well, the floor is lava.
[COUGHS]
- [GRUNTING]
- [ELECTRICITY CRACKLING]
[PANTING]
[PERSON COUGHING]
Hello?
[PERSON] Over here! [COUGHING]
[ATHENA] I'm coming to you!
Let me help.
- [COUGHING]
- Are you hurt?
Do you feel like
anything might be broken?
No, no, I don't think so. I got my bell
rung pretty good, but I'm okay.
Okay. Do you know your name?
Harvey. I'm with operations management.
I just came down here
to do a tunnel integrity inspection.
And it's a fail, by the way.
Yeah, I can see that.
Hey, lady,
what the hell are you doing down here?
Believe it or not,
I'm working a jewelry heist.
You're a jewel thief?
[SPARKS] No, she's a cop.
Matthew Sparks?
I'll tase her!
I-I thought it was my Taser.
Hello, Sergeant Grant.
Sergeant Grant and I
used to work together.
For two days.
For two days.
And it's not Sergeant
Grant. Not anymore.
It's Detective Grant now.
- No kidding?
- [HARVEY COUGHING]
I guess both of us landed on our feet.
All right, Harvey,
how do we get out of here
before this whole thing's on top of us?
Well, we can't go back
the way we came in.
- Do you have a radio?
- Yes, yes.
- [SPARKS] Hey, boss?
- [HARVEY] Yeah?
[SPARKS] It's thrashed.
Perfect.
When they don't hear from us,
they'll come looking, right?
Hey, listen.
So I don't know how to tell you this,
but we're nobody's priority
right now, okay?
Does anybody else know that you're here?
Do you think I would climb down a hole
without letting anyone know?
I figure my partner's
already been contacted.
Let's get you up.
- [RUMBLING]
- Whoa, whoa, whoa!
[GASPING]
Though I'm not sure that I
want to stick around and find out.
[OFFICER] Move!
Two blocks, take a right!
- [SIRENS WAILING]
- [HORNS BLARING]
Hello. Anybody in here?
LAPD, this is a mandatory evacuation!
We got to move now!
[GROANS]
Please remain calm.
Our firefighters are gonna evacuate
the closest cars.
Do not move.
We will come to you.
Hey, is our ladder rated
for that kind of heat?
Guess we'll see.
[BUCK] Hey, hey, Rav. Don't look down.
Oh, God.
You looked down, didn't you?
Hey, fire captain!
We're cooking out here!
Listen, I know it's hot out there.
We're gonna get each one of you,
but we're gonna do it safely,
one at a time.
- Screw that. [GRUNTS]
- [SCREAMS]
- [RAVI] Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Hey!
- Oh, my
- Dumbass.
- There's always one.
- Sir, please don't move.
- [BUCK] Hey, Cap. I can get to him!
Sir, please remain where you are.
Quit waiting for these
morons to save you.
This place is gonna
blow. Save yourselves!
Stay right there, Buck!
[CROWD SCREAMING]
Damn it.
It's like a sauna in here.
How much further?
[HARVEY] Oh, not too far.
We tack east to the
construction at Union.
There's an opening to the street
and an emergency landline
that we can use in case
we get into some trouble.
You know that there's more
than 20 miles' worth of tunnel
beneath downtown Los Angeles?
Do we have to traverse them all?
No, no, they're not all connected, but
all the municipal buildings have them.
For instance, they
run from the courthouse
all the way to the Hall of Records.
Then during Prohibition, they
dug tunnels out of the speakeasies
to get away from the police raids.
I mean, there must be, like,
20 miles of those.
Just don't make a wrong turn.
[LAUGHS] Don't worry
about it. Man, I know
these networks like
the back of my hand.
[BUCK] Take it easy, take it easy.
We got you. Big step. There you go.
- [RAVI] Moving quickly and safely.
- [BUCK] Yeah, I got you.
I got you, man.
Take my hand.
[HARRY] Come on, right here, sir.
Nice and easy.
Let's get you looked at, miss.
[GROANING]
[MADDIE] Hey, Chim, are you there?
Maddie, please tell me
you got more ladder trucks for me.
Yeah, I got something…
an automatic call from a smart watch.
Said that the wearer was involved
in a high-speed car crash
just a few blocks from you.
Maddie, there aren't any cars driving
fast enough for a crash around here.
- Did you try the owner?
- No answer.
And even weirder,
it came from inside the building.
The apartment complex, Second and Maple.
The one next to the volcano?
[SIGHS] Damn it.
Harry, Hen.
I need you to get back to Maple.
Possible car crash,
possibly a malfunctioning smart watch.
- A watch?
- Dispatch will give you the info.
I want you to get in and get out.
All right? Let's move.
- Got you, Cap.
- Grab a Halligan.
Let's try not to get Pompeii'ed.
[JOSH] Maddie, I think I know
why OEM hasn't picked up.
- Why?
- Because they're here.
We need your Wi-Fi
and a conference room.
- What happened to yours?
- It's full of lava.
This is now citywide command.
I'm really glad you're here.
LAFD is spread thin.
We're gonna need reinforcements.
Pasadena, San Diego,
and Nevada if this gets worse.
Wait, you're a geologist, right?
Is this gonna get worse?
It's not getting better.
Really? [SIGHS]
Detective Grant, um…
Look, I just wanted to say…
I-I-I…
I've always regretted the way
things ended with us.
You know, not the incident.
Obviously, I regret that,
- but the way that I spoke to you.
- Forget it.
[SPARKS] No, it was…
it was disrespectful,
and it was uncalled for
and, hey, you were right.
I wasn't cut out for that job.
[ATHENA] Well, not everybody is.
But like you said,
you landed on your feet.
I mean, right hand
to the LA Metro Chief of Operations.
I mean, that's got to be
a pretty plum gig.
[SPARKS] Yeah. I got lucky.
Well, actually,
my uncle pulled a few strings.
Right now, I'm only making
a little more than I did on the force.
But you know, the benefits are great
and there's, uh, an opportunity
for advancement, so…
I mean, in a way,
washing out of the LAPD
was the best thing that
could have happened to me.
Yeah, well, that's good. I'll make
sure to mention that to Martha Bailey.
Well, who's Martha Bailey?
That would be the woman who you shot.
- Right.
- She's had four surgeries, lost her job.
She's got a GoFundMe.
The department lawyers
told me not to contact her.
Yeah, they told me the same thing.
- [SIGHS]
- You-You…
You checked up on her?
Seemed like the decent thing to do.
[HARVEY] Hey, what are you guys doing,
huh? Come on, you're
having a card game?
Let's go, let's go.
I can only model from
previous eruptions.
- Hawaii, Iceland, Texas.
- Texas?
Austin. Ours is bigger.
Given LA's fault lines and the cone's
growth rate, we need everyone.
I spoke with Deputy
Department Commander.
That's great. What did she say?
That she's in Mallorca.
So, who's in charge?
[WRIGHT] According
to the deputy department commander,
authority is delegated to… you.
No. That-That can't be right.
You did spot the warning signs.
Dead vegetation, fleeing animals,
visual anomalies.
All volcanic precursors.
Okay, you were Ty's deputy.
Why can't you do it?
Even if I could jump
chain of command, no.
I did 12 hours once
when Ty had a colonoscopy,
and I wished it was me on the table.
Mutual aid is locked and loaded,
but it's up to you
to pull the trigger.
As acting head of OEM,
you have to authorize it.
[SIGHS] Okay. Do it.
Congratulations.
You just spent $40 million.
Why do people keep promoting me?
I have no earthly idea.
[PEOPLE CLAMORING]
Over here. This way. Dispatch said
southwest corner of the building.
[HARRY] I don't see a car crash, do you?
[SIGHS] Well, I guess it's the watch,
but we got to follow
it up just in case.
[SIGHS]
This is the apartment.
Okay. [GRUNTS]
- [POUNDS ON DOOR]
- LAFD!
We're coming in!
- [ALARM BEEPING]
- LAFD. Is anyone home?
Hen.
[PANTING]
Help me!
- [HEN] What's your name?
- Leona.
I'm Hen. This is Harry.
How did you find me?
Your watch called us.
Glad it's good for something other
than telling me I don't sleep enough.
- Harry's gonna take your vitals…
- [LEONA] Okay.
[HEN] …and then he's gonna try
to cool this thing down.
I'm gonna check in with Dispatch,
all right?
Dispatch,
this is Paramedic Wilson from the 118.
We're on site at your smart watch
collision at Second and Maple.
Tell me there isn't
a vehicle inside that building.
[HEN] Car would've been
an easier problem to solve.
Looks like a lava bomb
hit the apartment above
then came through the ceiling.
It hit our smart watch owner.
She's fused to the floor
with severe thermal injuries.
How severe?
- Can you check her pedal pulses?
- Yeah.
[LEONA PANTING]
I'm not sure how to
Start with the space between
the big toe and the second toe,
then feel your way up the leg,
but very gently.
It's easy to miss.
Yeah.
- How did you know that?
- She's a doctor.
Internist.
Sixteen years.
Pedal pulse is weak on both sides.
[HEN] All right, Dispatch.
Real severe. We're gonna need an RA unit
and heavy rescue.
I might be able to get you
one of those things,
but probably not the one
you're hoping for.
[HEN] How long is the list
for heavy rescue?
You'd be number six.
Hen.
Does she have that much time?
Put us on the list.
I'll make sure she does.
Hey, Buck.
What's the status
on this gas station of doom?
Well, it looks okay,
but we should really move fast.
Hold on.
You gotta keep your mask on, okay?
Just like that. All right.
[DOG WHINING]
Hey there, bud.
Where'd you come from?
"Service dog."
Who do you serve?
His tag says his name is Biscuit.
- It's a service dog registered to
- [CHIM] Ryland Howard.
Well then, where's Ryland Howard?
He's not in triage.
Hey, Cap, look at his paws.
I think this brave boy
came through the lava.
[CHIM SIGHS]
So his owner must
be in one of those cars.
Ryland Howard, age 25.
DMV record says
he drives a red Honda Civic.
Copy that. 118, anyone see a red Civic?
Uh…
Negative.
[RAVI] Everything kinda
looks the same out here.
Dispatch,
any chance Ryland called 911 today?
Uh, no, but he called last year.
Uh, rescue 136 took him to St. Ray's.
It says his pots flared up?
POTS syndrome, not the cookware. Got it.
Guessing this is a seizure dog.
- It alerts him when he's triggered.
- [LINDA] By what?
Linda, if this guy's having a seizure,
we need more eyes.
[EDDIE] Or a nose.
Ryland!
Ryland!
Ryland, can you hear me?
Ryland!
Ryland, you out here?
Ryland!
[GRUNTS]
Over here? All right. [GRUNTS]
Ryland! You out here?
[BARKING]
This way?
Great. This way.
[CROWD SCREAMING]
[EDDIE] I got you.
I got you. I got you, buddy.
I got you, bud.
Here?
Found him, Cap. Not a red Civic.
A gray Ford Fusion.
Okay, buddy. [GRUNTS]
Go comfort Ryland,
okay, buddy? Good job.
Go keep Ryland company, bud.
Okay.
Please be open.
Please be open. [GRUNTS]
Uh, thank you, God.
Ryland, if you can hear me, I'm LAFD.
I'm here to help.
All right.
Okay.
There we go. That should help
feel a little better, all right?
Okay. Hang in there, Ryland.
Okay.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
What happened?
You had an episode,
likely a non-epileptic seizure.
Just breathe slowly
through your nose, okay?
You're gonna be okay.
Thanks to this guy right here.
Attaboy, Biscuit.
All right.
Hey, what happened to the Civic?
It's in the shop.
This is a rental.
I hope you got the insurance.
Do you know that the
city of Los Angeles,
they got 20 miles of tunnel
underneath downtown Los Angeles.
- Yeah, you said that already.
- I can't tell where we are.
I mean, everything
sort of looks the same.
Because it is the sa
The graffiti.
We've been here before.
I mean, it's the same tag,
but it was on the other wall.
[SCOFFS] No, that's because we were
walking in the other direction.
We've been going in circles.
Hey, boss. You think, you know,
maybe you got a little turned around?
Oh, don't be stupid.
I could find my way around
these tunnels with my eyes closed.
Well, maybe we should try it with
your eyes closed because we are lost.
Who is she?
Oh, Lord…
[ATHENA] Huh?
Concussion?
Mmm. I'm no medic, but that
left eye looks a little sluggish.
Harvey, you don't remember
that we met earlier?
And you are?
- Doesn't matter who I am.
- She's with the LAPD.
LAPD? Kid, what are we doing down here?
Director Worrell sent
us down here to do
a tunnel integrity
inspection, remember?
- The sinkhole was getting bigger.
- Yeah. Did we do one?
There was an earthquake.
[SPARKS] Maintenance
40 is half caved in.
You got clunked on your head,
and now your radio's smashed.
We gotta go up to
the site under Union.
There's an emergency
landline up there.
Yeah, that's where we were headed
before you forgot
where you were going.
Really?
[SIGHS] Do you know
where you are right now?
Yeah. Maintenance 36 East.
Can you get us to that emergency phone?
Go straight to the T junction,
we hang a right,
and then a series of lefts
for two city blocks.
Okay. We go right and then we keep left.
- Yeah.
- All right, let's do it.
- Great.
- [HARVEY] Thanks.
Uh…
- Am I brain damaged?
- A concussion, maybe.
Or a little short-term memory loss.
Let's get you out of here
so we can get you checked out.
Officer, thank you.
My wife would appreciate that.
- Thank you.
- Okay. Well, let's get you home to her.
[HARVEY] Oh. It's like a sauna in here.
Seems like he's gonna be okay.
Yeah. Uh…
His wife passed away three months ago.
[SIGHS] Okay.
Maybe don't mention
that detail just now.
Harvey.
Acute respiratory failure's arriving.
- Miller, make sure ICU's ready.
- [MILLER] I'm on it.
- Bay 5 just opened up.
- Good. Doc, take the corneal abrasions
and put him over in
Bay 5. And call Ramos.
Tell them to ask med-surge
- if they can spare beds.
- [DOCTOR] Right away.
This isn't slowing down anytime soon.
We're running out of room.
- Okay, what we got?
- [PARAMEDIC] Female, mid-30s…
[HORN HONKING]
- Jenkins, get him to ICU immediately.
- [JENKINS] Go ahead, right in.
Somebody help us, please!
- Where are you hurt?
- Not me, it's him. He's covered in burns.
- [IAN] I need a gurney.
- [MAY] Gurney!
- It's okay, baby. It's okay.
- [IAN] Nice and easy. Brace yourself.
- [GROOM GROANING]
- What's his name?
[BRIDE] I'm Gabrielle, this is Johnny.
- He's my husband.
- All right, congratulations.
We're gonna help
your husband, all right?
Looks like partial and full thickness
burns on about 50% of his body,
at least what I can see through the tux.
[MEDIC] Code blue. We have a code blue
in here. All hands on deck.
Okay, uh, all right. He needs fluids
and pain meds. You
good to start a line?
O-Of course, yeah, I can do it.
Okay, great. You got it. You got it.
I can do it.
It's not the big day
that you guys planned, huh?
We were at the park taking pictures,
and all of a sudden
it started raining fire.
I think I heard somebody say
it was a volcano.
- [GROANS]
- Uh, can you make a fist for me?
I was so worried
about my dress, and he
threw himself on top
of me to protect me,
and I just… I really
need him to be okay.
It's just the start of our lives
together. I need him to be okay.
You brought him here, and we're
gonna take good care of him, okay?
[SCREAMS]
Johnny! Oh, my God, Johnny!
Johnny! No, no, no, no, no, no!
- No, Johnny! Johnny! Johnny!
- Hey, hey, hey.
- [IAN MUMBLES]
- [GABRIELLE] No, Johnny!
[IAN] Johnny, listen to my voice.
Okay? Listen to my voice.
You should let go now.
- [GABRIELLE CRYING]
- [IAN] It's going to be okay…
[PANTING]
Dispatch, what's the update
on our extraction status?
You're solidly in the number four slot.
That's progress, right?
- [HEN] Leona?
- Is she in shock?
Peaked T waves. Hyperkalemia.
Her potassium's too high. It could be
It's my kidneys.
Rhabdo.
Okay. Uh, Wha… What can we do for that?
You keep pushing fluids.
Add calcium, albuterol, bicarb.
- Also, I'm feeling… kind of warm.
- Uh, like a fever?
[LEONA MUTTERS WEAKLY]
Uh… That's not a good look.
[HEN] The edge of your wound
is yellow-green.
- It's likely bile from
- [LEONA] My kidneys.
And my liver. My
body's poisoning itself.
[SIGHS] Listen, Leona, we can still
treat this, okay?
Help will be here soon.
Please.
Please, let's be honest.
Even if they were to walk
through that door right now,
the odds of me getting to an OR
are at best…
50-50.
Getting out of one?
Half that.
Ever seeing
the outside of a hospital again?
Near zero.
You can't know that though.
Sixteen years…
makes me a pretty good guesser.
Leona, what are you saying?
I'm refusing medical treatment.
This isn't right. No.
We can't just give up.
You're so young.
You're gonna save a lot of people.
I'm just not one of them.
I understand.
Medical Control agrees
with your assessment of the situation.
No extraordinary measures will be taken
unless you authorize it.
Our goal now is to just…
keep you comfortable.
Thank you.
[CHIM] Hen, Harry, what's your status?
We're still at the
apartment. It'll be a
minute before we
can get back your way.
[CHIM] Copy. Keep me posted.
Could use the extra
hands if you have 'em.
Babysitting me…
Is it a good use of your talents?
Or your time?
We're not gonna leave you here alone.
There's nothing…
you can
I can stay.
Cap needs your hands more than mine.
- No.
- [HARRY] Yes.
Go.
Save a life.
That's what I'd do.
Air support says ash
is killing their rotors.
Okay, we're gonna
have to ground LAX too.
I got the head of MTA on the line.
Tell him that his buses
are now evac shuttles.
Maddie,
we've got a tilt of 4.5 microradians.
Please tell me
that means it's slowing down.
From the rate that lava's pumping,
flows are gonna burn
through the Arts District
and hit Soto Vista within the hour.
Soto Vista,
that's like 80,000 people, right?
- Eighty-six. And then there's the wind.
- Of course there's wind.
It's whipping up structure fires and
spreading it northeast
to Reina Heights.
But we're strapped.
We don't have
enough resources to send to both.
Then it's your decision.
Which one do we defend?
You mean, which one do I let burn?
[BUCK] LAFD, anyone out here?
Anyone left?
- [PERSON] Here.
- Okay, I'm gonna come to you.
Are you able to climb out?
[PANTS] Um, yeah.
[BUCK] Okay, I'm coming to you. [GRUNTS]
Okay, hey,
we're gonna have to make some big jumps.
Are you okay with that?
Um… [PANTING]
…I'll try.
[GRUNTS] Okay.
Okay. Take my hand.
My name is Buck.
I'm gonna get you out of here.
- Paige.
- We're gonna do it one car at a time.
You're gonna watch me, follow me. I'm
gonna help you every step of the way.
Okay, here we go.
- [GASPING]
- There you go. There you go.
You're good. Okay, first one.
It's okay. You good?
- I don't think I can do that again.
- Uh, sure you can.
Just like hopscotch or jump rope.
Ever seen a pregnant lady jump rope?
Hey, so, do you have a name picked out?
Um, yeah. We're gonna call her Penny.
Penny, that's beautiful.
For this next jump…
- We're gonna do this next jump for Penny.
- Okay.
[BUCK] It's a big one.
But you can do it.
Paige, I won't let you fall.
For Penny.
One, two, three! For Penny!
- I got you. I got you.
- Oh, my God.
I can't believe I made it.
Okay.
From here, it's, uh…
- It's pretty easy, okay?
- Okay.
Just one step, one step at a time.
- Okay. Down you come.
- Okay. I can do this.
- Yes, you can.
- Okay.
Okay.
[PAIGE] Oh. [CRYING]
- [BUCK] It's okay.
- [PAIGE] No, it's not. We're trapped.
Hey, Cap, we got a problem.
Yeah, I see it.
Get on top of that green truck.
Ravi, give me 45 degrees. Eddie,
get your turnout. You're going up.
Get the life gun. Let's go! Let's move!
We have to go this way?
No, right now we just need to get higher
and away from the heat
till they figure out a plan.
Get up here.
High as we can. High as we can.
Double-time it, Eddie! Let's go!
[BUCK] Just wait for it.
Watch out!
- He's a pretty good shot.
- Okay.
[GUNSHOT]
[BUCK, PAIGE PANTING]
Okay, okay. Kinda close.
[EDDIE] Sending down the line first,
and then the harness.
Okay, got it!
Hey, guys, guys, forget the harness.
Ravi, when I tell you,
you hit that winch.
[CHIM] Let's move. Let's go!
- Lift up your arms.
- All right. What are we doing?
[BUCK] You're gonna hold on to me
tight as you can.
- Paige, do not let go, okay? Hold on.
- Okay.
Ravi!
[MACHINE WHIRRING]
[BOTH PANTING]
[PAIGE] Did we make it?
You're gonna have a pretty great story
to tell Penny one day.
[BOTH LAUGHING]
- Let's get you to triage.
- Thanks, Buck.
You are one lucky bastard.
[GENTLE MUSIC PLAYS]
[RAVI] Hey, Hen. You missed it.
Buck was like Tarzan versus the volcano.
I'm sure she can catch it on TikTok.
Hey, we got some yellow tags with
some burns that need to be looked at.
No red ones?
Not a lot of middle ground with lava,
it turns out.
Hey. Where's Harry?
[LEONA GROANING]
I lost my first patient… [SNIFFLES]
…when I was just a little bit older
than you. [CHUCKLES WEAKLY]
Mrs. Levitt.
Cardiac arrest.
One year after I got out of med school,
she just died right…
in my hands.
[EXHALES] It was a Tuesday.
[COUGHS, SNIFFLES] Funny, isn't it?
The things we remember.
And that's the moment you learn…
that you don't get to save everybody.
[CHUCKLES] You're doing a hell
of a lot better than I did.
[SIGHS]
I don't feel like I am.
[LEONA] I mean, you're…
You're sitting here with me
right now, right?
How can you be so brave?
Do you mind if I drop it for a minute?
Bravery is so… so exhausting. [SOBS]
[LEONA SOBBING]
I'm not sure what I'm…
I'm more afraid…
afraid of.
That I'm going to meet my maker,
or that there is no maker.
I'm… I'm so sorry. [SNIFFLES]
I couldn't…
Nobody could.
Harry, you're gonna carry
a… a lot of these in your career.
Pack your grief wisely.
[ALARM BEEPING]
Doctor's orders.
[ALARM INTENSIFIES]
[STEADY BEEP]
[JOSH] DWP cut power to Glendale.
Their mayor wants to give you an earful,
but I told him you…
Didn't hear a word I just said.
Glendale's dark. Mayor's mad.
Melinda's looking for you too. [SIGHS]
She needs a decision.
Reina Heights is hilly. [SCOFFS]
Newer builds, farther from the eruption,
fewer people.
And Soto Vista is
90% residential working class.
Only two-thirds of the people
have left their homes.
Homes built in the 1920s.
If it goes up,
it'll be the whole neighborhood.
Total devastation.
So we dispatch there.
No.
We make sure that
it's evacuated, and we…
We let it burn.
We save Reina Heights because…
we can't put out a volcano,
but we can contain the fire,
and if we don't, it's Mount Washington,
El Sereno, Alhambra.
Chain reaction. [SIGHS]
And you know what,
maybe we get lucky and the wind lets up.
Or we lose half the city
before we can even make a dent.
- Are you sure?
- [SNIFFLES] No.
I am not sure of anything today,
and I do not feel lucky.
Okay, I'll tell Melinda.
No. [SIGHS]
[BREATHES DEEPLY]
This is on me.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]
[SIGHS]
[SIGHS]
Is he okay?
He's doing better.
[PANTS] I'm sorry.
I-I thought I knew how to do it.
- I've been practicing forever.
- [IAN] I know.
Piece of silicone
ain't the same as a human being.
I know I-I messed up.
[IAN] Do you?
Well, I screwed up the IV insertion.
Your first screw-up was not telling me
you hadn't done an IV before.
I didn't wanna get kicked off the floor.
[IAN] This is a teaching hospital.
Okay, you tell me you don't know
how to do something, I teach you,
but I can't teach you what I don't know
you need to learn.
If you can't be honest with me about
that, then I will
kick you off the floor.
It won't happen again.
Good. Come on.
[SIGHS] Wait, you said first screw-up.
There were others?
Just this.
All right, it's okay to make mistakes,
but you can never abandon your post
and feel sorry for yourself.
Understood.
[HARVEY] Oh, man.
[ATHENA] How you doing, Harvey?
- [HARVEY] Okay.
- [ATHENA GASPS, SCREAMS]
[RATS SQUEAKING]
[PANTING]
Why do I feel
like they know something we don't?
We are running out of options.
Come on.
[LAUGHS] See? Told you. Back of my hand.
Where's the way out?
There's a workers' entrance
at the back down there.
[ATHENA] Then let's get down there.
- Come on!
- [RUMBLING, EXPLOSION]
[ATHENA SCREAMING]
[ALL COUGHING, GROANING]
Should have gone with the rats.
