What's Hiding in the Dark

1
These last couple months
have been amazing.
But we don't even know what this is yet.
Whatever this is, I'm in.
Emelia!
[GASPS] I know you.
How you doing?
Pretty wild starting a parenting journey
at this point in your life.
Sometimes I worry about
how this is gonna work,
you and I raising a kid together.
You're so pretty.
- What's your name?
- Sharon.
You're tired, aren't you?
I
It's okay, Bert.
We can just sit.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[DOORBELL BUZZING]
Kip. [BUZZING CONTINUES]
I think your doorbell's broken.
It works fine. I was sleeping.
What happened to your key?
I lost it.
You were sleeping?
Since when do you sleep past 6:00?
Since when are you up before noon?
And what's with the suit?
Is this a Halloween costume?
This is 100% polyester,
I'll have you know.
That's not good.
It's for work.
Wait. You got a bike?
Uh, yeah, I got a bike. Sorry.
You got a job that requires you
to wear something
besides a ratty T-shirt?
Well, I see that
you're currently enjoying
one of my ratty old T-shirts.
I don't wanna miss the breakfast rush
- Hey.
- What's up, dude?
Look, I didn't know.
I thought she was single.
- Oh, no. No.
- Ew. I'm her brother.
Oh, well, cool.
- Nice to meet you, man.
- Yeah.
Um, have you seen my pants?
I think they're by the couch.
Oh, thanks.
I'm just gonna use the bathroom.
Aye, aye, Captain.
- Impulse buy?
- No.
What are you even doing here, Kip?
Oh, so, um, do you
still have Mom's ring?
I, uh, kinda got some important news.
You might wanna sit down for this.
[SOFT MUSIC]
Okay.
I am proposing to my girlfriend.
Oh, how far along is she?
Seriously, Caty, Gemma is the most
amazing person on the planet.
We're hanging out
in Andersonville tonight.
You should stop by and meet her.
I guess I'll be heading out then.
[CHUCKLES] Get out.
- All right.
- QuickEats?
Or it's just like a quickie.
Hell of a tip.
- Kip.
- What?
I'm happy for both of you.
Sex makes the world go round.
Yeah, sometimes I get to meet
some pretty cool people.
[LAUGHS]
So do you have Mom's ring,
or are you gonna
save it for the delivery dude?
So it's just
the ultrasound today, right?
Uh, yeah.
Hi.
I'm Dr. Lovell.
Dr. Clark had to step out
to do a delivery,
so I'm gonna be doing
your ultrasound today, okay?
Okay. Yeah. Sure.
Before we get started,
two very important questions
question number one, do either of you
know who I'm supposed to be?
A cat.
I'm the cat that went viral
for looking like Eugene Levy.
Remember, he had those funny
markings on his fur like eyebrows?
Oh, you know, I'm not really
active on Instagram, so
Time to move on to TikTok.
Anyway, question two
do we want to learn
the baby's sex today?
- Yes, we would.
- I'd rather not.
So um, I was kind of
thinking it would be
nice if we kept it a surprise.
Oh, you really think
we need any more surprises?
I mean, why is learning
the sex so important?
I mean, it would help you to figure out
the design of the nursery.
You could always do
a gender-neutral theme
outer space, the ocean,
woodland creatures.
Oh, yes. Those are great ideas. Thanks.
Yeah, I'm really not worried
about the nursery.
Okay, well, then
we'll just revisit it at our next visit.
I'll make a note for Dr. Clark.
Are you ready?
Yeah.
All right.
Okay.
Knock, knock.
We were supposed to meet at
Lou Mitchell's for breakfast
this morning, birthday boy.
Did either of you guys get my text?
I'm so sorry. I can't do it today.
This day is turning into an
actual frickin' nightmare.
I'm so sorry.
Yeah, we got your text.
We chose to ignore it.
Did you really think we were
gonna let you wriggle away
from any and all humiliation?
Do your colleagues
realize how old you are?
Oh, hey! This guy is 65 today.
Tell a friend.
Would you have a lighter by any chance?
Uh
Oh, almost forgot your present.
Not that I smoke, but, um, yeah.
This is obviously Howie's idea.
[CHUCKLES] Ta-da!
Whoa!
- Here we go.
- Jeepers.
Guys, they're gorgeous.
Are they fancy?
That's my name.
Guys, I don't even play golf.
Not yet, you don't.
You're always talking about how the ED
is a young person's game.
Certainly you must be
getting tired of fighting
the same old fight.
Make a wish.
Not even 9:00 a.m., and we're already
getting Halloween injuries.
So glad I'm off tonight.
Big plans?
Uh, Sadie and I are taking
Emelia trick-or-treating.
Really?
So that's kind of turned into a, uh,
what, a bit of a thing?
Yeah, a really nice thing.
Dr. Ripley, you're on deck.
Going to Treatment 4.
Eight-year-old boy fell down at school.
Trauma to the face.
Teacher rode in with him.
Sorry, pal. No rest for the weary.
Actually, Dr. Charles,
you're needed too.
It's a possible psych issue.
Well, trick or treat.
Lucas Early, eight-year-old male.
2 centimeter through-and-through
laceration below the lip.
Lower two front teeth
went through the skin.
It's okay, Lucas.
This is his teacher, Ms. Herrera.
You're safe, these doctors
are gonna help you.
How did this happen?
He was running, tripped,
and hit his chin on a curb.
Okay. Hi, Lucas.
I'm Dr. Ripley.
We're gonna take you
for a little ride, okay?
On my count, one, two, three.
Lucas, you mind if I just
move this jacket a little bit
so I can take a look?
It might take him a minute to warm up.
Did he get overstimulated
by all the Halloween costumes?
Northbrook doesn't
allow costumes at school.
Could I, uh,
speak with one of you outside?
Of course.
Thanks, guys.
Lucas I don't even know
what to call it.
He became extremely agitated
and tried running away from school.
Thank God he tripped.
Northbrook Academy
is on a very busy road.
If he had run into the street,
I don't know what would have happened.
Ms. Herrera, are you
are you aware that you're bleeding?
What?
It's just a small cut.
I didn't think it was that bad.
What happened?
Get away! Go away!
Lucas, Lucas,
I'm not gonna hurt you, okay?
I'm a doctor. I'm here to help you.
No, you're you're not a doctor.
You're one of the bad people.
The bad people?
The monsters.
You're all monsters!
[TENSE MUSIC]
So the baby is measuring
right where it should be.
One thing I did wanna mention is,
the nuchal translucency
is on the high end of normal.
Uh, what's the measurement?
It's, uh, 3.0.
An increase in the NT
that can be a sign
of chromosomal and genetic
abnormalities, right?
Yes, but given that all of
Hannah's bloodwork was normal,
I'm really not stressed about it.
Oh, I'm glad you're not,
but I am stressing.
What can we do for this?
Um, nothing at the moment.
We can bring Hannah back in a few weeks
for an early anatomy scan.
That's the game plan, watch and wait?
I mean, that is what I would
recommend for my own patients.
I mean, I don't think
it's necessary at this point,
but we could discuss
doing an amniocentesis to
No, no. No. Sorry, no.
My non-invasive prenatal
testing and genetic carrier
screenings were both normal, so.
So what about the genetic issues that
don't show up on those tests?
Can you diagnose those
conditions with an amnio?
Yes.
Yes, but it is also totally
overkill at this moment.
Totally.
And it's not worth the risk. Trust me.
- I'm I'm an OB.
- Okay. All right.
All right.
You just can't always use the
"trust me, I'm an OB, I know best" card.
Okay, well, then how about the,
"It's my body
and I'm not doing it" card.
That okay?
Cool, cool, cool.
Well, I think that's everything.
Do either of you guys have
any other questions for me?
No, but thank you, Dr. Lovell.
So why do you think Lucas
attacked you with scissors?
He didn't attack me.
Well, then how would you
characterize what happened?
He was terrified,
trying to protect himself.
Right. Terrified of?
- Me.
- Yeah.
Any history of mental illness
that you know about?
No.
- Not to my knowledge, at least.
- Okay.
No recent injuries
or any kind of health issues?
Lately, Lucas has
just been a bit more subdued,
down in the dumps,
like not quite himself.
Interesting.
And how long ago did you
start to notice that?
A few days ago.
We have parent-teacher
conferences on Friday.
I was gonna check in
with his foster parents then.
Oh.
How long has Lucas been in foster care?
Since he was six.
He's been with his current
foster parents, Tim and Lisa,
for about a year, I think.
I've been reaching out to them,
but it just keeps going to voicemail.
And does he seem pretty happy
with them, do you think?
It's hard to say.
I mean, Lucas is one of those kids who
rarely complains about anything.
So even if he wasn't happy,
I'm not sure he'd tell me.
Okay. You know what? It's good to know.
Thank you, Ms. Herrera.
This has all been really helpful.
Of course. Of course.
Lucas is just such a sweet boy.
I really hate to see him like this.
We are gonna get to the
bottom of this, I promise you.
Thank you.
Mitch,
how's he doing?
Still pretty freaked out.
What do you think's going on?
Early-onset schizophrenia?
That'd be very early
and just highly unusual.
Didn't really align
with the presentation.
Teacher just told me that
he hasn't really been himself
the last few days.
I'm just wondering I don't know
if there's a trigger in there somewhere.
I, uh, I did see in his chart
that he's in foster care.
Yeah. She just told me.
I'd let him chill out
for a bit, and then just
I don't know go back in and see if
I can get him to talk to me.
- Okay?
- Yeah.
Jeez. Another body.
Oh, that room's giving me
the heebie jeebies.
I think there's a spirit of the
deceased hanging out in there.
Okay, I'll bite.
Why would anybody hang around
Treatment 5 longer than they have to?
They're looking to take more
spirits with them, obviously.
The last three patients
we put in there have died.
- No, that's not
- Mm-hmm.
Oh, actually, yeah, you're right.
Yeah.
My gut says it's the spirit
of Mr. Crowley,
you know, that elderly
gentleman who said I looked
like a young Goldie Hawn?
And then he died of MI.
Didn't he have cataracts in both eyes?
Okay, that's beside
the point, Dr. Archer.
Need some help over here.
Trauma 3 is open.
What's going on?
This is my roommate, Jenny Roselle.
Her period's been really bad,
and she hasn't left
our dorm room in two days.
I went to go check on her
after my Intro to Econ class
this morning, and she was burning up.
I called my dad, who's a doctor.
He's a dermatologist,
but he knows the basic stuff,
and he said that I should
call campus health.
But Jenny kept saying no
and that she was fine.
And she wouldn't let me call.
You did the right thing bringing her in.
We're gonna help you
into the bed, okay, Jenny?
Here, let me give you my number.
I'll get it from you, Amy.
Let's give the doctor some room.
Bye, Jenny. Feel better.
Temp's 102.3.
She's tachycardic.
Heart rate's 143. BP 80/45.
I'm gonna palpate your abdomen, Jenny.
Let me know if anything feels tender.
[WHIMPERS]
Her uterus is enlarged.
Ultrasound.
Let's give 4 of morphine
and hang a liter of saline.
[MACHINES BEEPING]
Her endometrial lining is thickened,
and I'm seeing pockets
that could be air.
Endometritis?
Or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Let's order a sepsis panel
and an hCG test.
In the meantime, start Zosyn IV
and loop in Dr. Asher.
We're gonna get you
feeling better, Jenny.
You want some jam and butter
on your toast?
Maybe just some butter, huh?
Oh. Oh.
Okay.
Never mind.
You know, I went to see Isaiah
in his preschool recital on Tuesday.
And you gotta see
the little three-piece suit
that Tara had him in.
You know, I think
I have a picture for you.
Let's see.
It was so ridiculous
but so stinking cute.
[LAUGHS]
Look at this.
Isn't he something?
Ooh, who is that handsome little guy?
Hey, Tamika.
He looks like a mini you, Bert.
This is our grandson, Isaiah.
Oh, my.
He is a cutie pie.
Yeah. And believe me, he knows it.
Uses it to get anything
he wants out of his mother.
[CHUCKLES]
How are we doing today, Bert?
Fine.
Who's your grandson dressing up as?
Uh, you know, one of those superheroes
all of his little friends
have obsessed on.
I I can't remember the name.
Oh.
- You don't wanna spill.
- Don't touch that!
- I just wanted to
- It's all right, Bert.
Move it out of the way
so you won't spill it.
Bert.
You can just leave that on the table.
Come on. Let's leave this on the table.
Give me the plate, okay?
I don't want you here!
You think I wanna be?
[TENSE MUSIC]
Morning, Sharon.
Hey.
I know I look a mess.
No, no.
You look you look fine. You okay?
Any dementia in your family?
Yeah.
My uncle Paul, my mother's brother.
Do you remember the anger phase?
Oh, he would rage at my poor mother
using all sorts of very strong language
we didn't even think he knew.
You won't ever hear me
call my ex-husband a saint.
But one thing he never did
not once
during the entirety of our marriage
did he raise his voice at me.
No, when Bert got mad,
he got softer, not louder.
I can count on one hand the number
of times he raised his voice.
And they've all happened
since his diagnosis,
including this morning.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
And you know,
that's not even why I'm upset.
I'm just really mad at myself because
I I lost it.
I yelled back at him.
Sharon, listen to me.
You are navigating highly
stressful, uncharted waters
with someone who you
really did not see yourself
going through this with.
Yeah, but it's Bert going through it.
Yes.
And you're going through it too.
Let me get myself together.
Okay.
[SOMBER MUSIC]

She definitely has endometritis,
high white count, elevated
procalcitonin and lactate.
And her roommate said
she's having a bad period.
Mm, but her pregnancy test is positive.
And I didn't see an embryo
on her ultrasound.
Yeah, her thickened uterine lining
is likely from retained product.
She's having a miscarriage.

- Lucas, how you feeling?
- No, no! Please go away!
Lucas, I'm not gonna hurt you.
Get away!
I-I promise I'm not
gonna hurt you, buddy.
Hey, do you think
you could describe to me
what it is that you're seeing
that's making you so upset?
Please don't hurt me.
Go away. Go away.
Hey, you know what?
Ms. Herrera told me
that you like to draw
and that you're actually
pretty good at it.
Is that true?
Go away. [BREATHING HEAVILY]
Okay, well, you know
something I've learned
about drawing is that
if I draw a picture
of something that I'm scared of,
it can make it
quite a lot less scary for me.
Do you think that you might be
able to draw a picture for me?
You can just use my iPad,
draw it with your finger.
Think you might be able
to do that for me?
Okay. Here you go. Don't look at me.
I'm just gonna hand it to you.
[SOFT APPREHENSIVE MUSIC]

[WHIMPERS]
Wow.
Who is this?
It's you.

The pregnancy hormone
could take several weeks
to leave your body,
which is why you still have
a positive pregnancy test.
Jenny, is there anyone you
wanna call, maybe your parents?
No.
Please, you can't tell my parents.
Okay. I won't.
You're an adult, and I won't
tell them or anyone else
without your permission.
Am I in trouble?
We just we wanna get
you feeling better, okay?
The reason you're sick
is because your uterus
has retained parts of your placenta,
which has become infected.
You will need surgery to remove those.
- I need surgery?
- Yes,
but it is a minor
and very safe procedure.
In the meantime, I would like
to collect vaginal cultures
so we can pinpoint the bacteria
that's causing your infection.
Is that okay with you?
Mm.
Okay.
Okay, let me just grab
a nurse to assist.
I'll be right back.
Keep looking at the wall.
Keep looking at the wall.
I'm just sliding over here.
Okay, now look.
You don't have to look at me.
And I promise I won't move any closer.
Lucas,
cross my heart, I'm not a monster.
But I absolutely believe
that when you look at me,
that's what you see because
I think that your brain
is playing a trick on you.
- A trick?
- Yeah.
And I'm going to prove that
to you right now
by taking a picture of myself.
Now I'm gonna show it to you.
Here here comes the iPad.
That's okay.
- That's you?
- Yeah.
Not a monster, right?
No.
Okay, Jenny, so you're gonna
feel my hand on your thigh.
Okay. Speculum.
Thank you.
All right, now you're gonna
feel a little pressure.
I know. I'm sorry.
I know that the infection
makes it extra, extra tender,
so I will be gentle.
Dr. Asher, are you ready for the swab?
Dr. Asher?
[TENSE MUSIC]
Um, yeah. Sorry.
I just culture swab, please.

Okay.
Okay. I will be right back.
Wait, wait. Where are you going?
It's okay.
I'll be right back, I promise.

Jenny's pelvic exam revealed
a second-degree perineal tear,
and I saw umbilical cord
coming from her cervix.
I felt like something was off
with her demeanor,
but I wasn't sure if she was
in shock or hiding something.
Do you know how far along she was?
Based on the size
of the tear and the cord,
I suspect close to full-term.
So where's the baby now?
And she won't tell you
what she did with the baby?
She won't even admit there was a baby.
Well, if she delivered days ago
and left the newborn somewhere, it
it could still be alive.
And very much in need
of medical attention.
Okay. I don't see any way around it.
I have to report this to CPD.
We need to find that baby.
Okay, so what do we do
with Jenny in the interim?
Antibiotics alone
won't clear up the infection,
and now she's refusing surgery.
Well, we have to honor her wishes,
but if her condition worsens
and she becomes incapacitated,
then the hospital should assume
decision-making authority
over her medical care.
- Agreed.
- Thank you.
- Thanks.
- You're welcome.
What I'm thinking right now
is that Lucas is suffering
from something called
prosopometamorphopsia,
or PMO for short,
colloquially known as,
believe it or not,
demon face syndrome.
Yeah, well, that's certainly accurate.
Very rare neurological
disorder of visual perception.
So this isn't a hallucination?
Exactly.
It's a distortion, which is
a very different thing.
Now, some people, it only occurs
with a real, live human being,
right, not 2D imagery.
Sure enough, when I showed
Lucas a picture of my face,
looked completely normal to him.
So what triggers PMO?
You know, we know so little about it,
but I would like to get him
an MRI to rule out
the most serious known cause,
which is traumatic brain injury.
You think something might have happened
at his foster home,
an injury that wasn't reported?
I sure hope not.
- [METAL CLATTERING]
- What the hell?
[TENSE MUSIC]

How the hell did this happen?
It's Mr. Crowley.
Who?
[WHISPERING]
The spirit haunting this room.
And we're done here.
[SPOOKY MUSIC]
- Hey.
- Hi.
I'm on hold with insurance,
waiting to fight with them
over my latest claim.
#prostheticproblems, am I right?
Your costume for tonight.
Thank you very much.
Hello? Hello? Hello?
Yes, I have my policy number.
It's on my insurance card.
Which is damn it.
It's at home.
Come on, baby, we gotta go right now.
But you said I could have a snack.
I know
I, uh, I can take her to
the café while you run home.
No, no. You're working.
Doris will text me if I'm needed.
And then what will you do with Emelia?
I will set her up with a coloring book
in the doctor's lounge.
Thanks, but she can
have a snack at home.
I'm hungry now.
Emelia, we're going. Now.
No, no, don't put me back on hold.
I'm getting the card.
I'll see you tonight.
Yeah.
Oh, Daniel.
- Hey.
- What's up?
I forgot to wish my dearest friend
a happy birthday this morning.
You did?
Maybe your dearest friend
ain't so unhappy you forgot.
Well, Happy Halloween birthday anyway.
Thank you.
Did I see Howie and Franklin
wandering around here earlier?
You sure did.
Gifted me a pricey set of golf clubs.
Made me blow out a candle
on a damn bran muffin.
Well, it sounds like they
want their old med school pal
to join them in retirement.
They're so so excited
about it all, you know?
[WHISPERING] I find it depressing.
Yeah, but it could be
your glorious third act.
I guess we have to ask
ourselves what we wanna do
with the time we have left.
I clearly have to change
my thinking, you know.
Certainly don't wanna outlast
my usefulness around here.
Are you kidding? We're the
glue holding this thing together.
Damn right we are.
You're damn right we are.
And you're gonna
figure it out, and so am I.
- I'm taking your word for it.
- Okay.
How's your day going?
Uh, I had a rough morning with Bert.
What happened?
I'll tell you some other time.
Do you wanna grab a coffee later?
Yeah.
Hey, uh, Lucas's foster parents
are waiting in your office.
On my way right now. Thank you.
Yeah.
I'm sorry we couldn't get here sooner.
We were up visiting our
eldest daughter in Milwaukee.
Well, the good news is,
no evidence of brain injury
or structural abnormalities
of any kind on Lucas's scans.
Oh, thank God.
So then what's causing
these distortions?
I was kind of hoping that we
could figure that out together.
His teacher said that he hasn't been
I don't know himself recently?
Yeah, he doesn't seem
to be sleeping well.
He's he's exhausted in the morning.
And I think he's having
some sensitivity to light.
He keeps squinting
and covering his eyes,
saying his head hurts.
I just chalked it up to a growth spurt.
It's so tough to tell
with Lucas, you know,
if something's really wrong.
He's such a sweet kid.
He doesn't wanna be a bother.
You know, that could be
a pediatric migraine.
And those are much less intense
than the adult version
but absolutely can be
caused by lack of sleep
and are a known trigger for PMO.
Will the distortions go away?
They will, and that can take anywhere
from a few hours to a few weeks.
But unfortunately,
they're very likely to return,
which is why I'd like to refer
you to a colleague of mine
who is a very skilled neuropsychiatrist.
And he can help you
put together a treat
what's what's wrong?
We'll certainly make the appointment,
but, um, well, we don't actually know
how much longer we're
gonna be in Lucas's life.
Yeah, we got a call from his
caseworker, Sheila, last week.
His biological parents are
trying to regain custody.
We're gonna fight it.
We've started the process
of filing for adoption.
Okay.
You happen to know why Lucas
was put in foster care initially?
Both of his parents are addicts.
Yeah, they claim they're sober now,
that they're turning their lives around.
And maybe they are, but you know.
Right. Right.
You think there's any chance
that Lucas might know,
that he might be aware
that his biological parents
are trying to get him back?
No, no, he doesn't know anything.
We didn't wanna scare him unnecessarily.
Okay, look, I'm gonna hit the books,
see if I can figure out
a way to get Lucas
a bit of immediate relief.
- Okay.
- That'd be great. Thanks.
I didn't I didn't deliver a baby.
Jenny, Dr. Asher saw the umbilical cord,
which means you must have cut it.
- Otherwise
- No, I didn't.
Please, I just wanna leave.
I know you wanna leave.
I know you're really scared
right now, but the
- Oh, my God.
- What's happening?
[MACHINE BEEPS]
Let me take a look, okay?
[GASPS]
- What's going on?
- She's starting to hemorrhage.
Okay, Jenny, listen to me.
If we don't operate now,
you will bleed to death.
I don't wanna die.
Okay, then let us take you to surgery.
- Okay?
- Okay.
Call the OR.
Jenny, listen to me.
I know that you're afraid
of getting in trouble,
but the best thing you can do
right now is tell the truth.
- Where's that baby?
- I
I buried her.
[TENSE MUSIC]
[SOBBING] I'm sorry.
He went into V-fib.
Crowley's at it again.
All right, charge to 120.
Charged.
Clear.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
No pulse. Resuming compressions.
Charge to 200, milligram of epi, please.
Clear.
No pulse.
Amiodarone, 300 milligrams.
Charge to 200.
- Charged.
- Clear.
[BEEPING]
Back to sinus rhythms.
Okay?
No such thing as ghosts.
What what is that?
- What happened?
- What is that?
- All right, all right.
- What's going on?
I don't know.
Hey, we lost power in here.
There.
You can't tell me
that wasn't something
A coincidence, all right?
Ghosts.
See, the green-tinted glasses
help with light sensitivity.
So ophthalmology had
a bunch of these lying around.
But it turns out they also help
reduce distortions
caused by PMO.
Open your eyes, pal.
Hey, there.
You're not scary-looking anymore.
You look just like your picture.
Just a little more handsome, right?
Eh.
[CHUCKLES]
You look like Tim and Lisa again.
Oh, we are Tim and Lisa.
Yeah.
Honey, can I ask you something?
Are you having trouble sleeping?
We won't get mad, okay?
Remember what we always tell you.
If you can't sleep or if
you're having bad dreams,
- you can always come wake us up.
- Right.
Lucas, I'm just curious.
I've been wondering if
maybe you might have heard
Tim and Lisa talking
to your caseworker, Sheila,
about possibly going back
to live with your
with your mom and dad?
Baby, it's okay if you did.
You can tell us.
Yeah.
I heard you crying, and I just
wanted to see what was wrong.
I know I'm supposed to
knock on your door, but
But what?
I didn't want to,
'cause that would be a mistake.
A mistake?
Why would that be a mistake?
'Cause you're not
supposed to bother people
when the door's closed.
Who told you that?
Your your mom and dad tell you that?
What else did they
tell you was a mistake?
I'm not supposed to talk about it.
Lucas, look at me.
You are not gonna get
in any trouble, buddy.
You are safe here.
Do you understand me?
- You won't tell them?
- I swear.
[TENSE MUSIC]

Um
Being too loud.
Not cleaning up my toys.
Sneaking food.
And, um,
what would Mom and Dad do
if you made a mistake?
They would scream
really bad words at me.
They tie me to my bed.
They won't let me have anything to eat.
Oh, baby.
I don't wanna go back there.
Don't make me go back there.
- It's okay.
- No.
I wanna stay here.
It's okay. All right.
- Hey, how'd it go?
- Surgery went well.
We were able to remove the
placenta and stop the bleeding.
Good. I wanted to let you
know we located the baby.
And?
As we expected, she was deceased.
Any signs indicating how the baby died?
Stillborn.
ME believes she died in utero weeks ago.
So what does that mean
for Jenny, legally speaking?
Legally, it doesn't take
all charges off the table.
That's at the discretion of the ASA.
But it does remove the most serious one.
I'm gonna come by tomorrow
to talk with her again
that is, if she
hasn't lawyered up by then.
Which, honestly, Hannah,
I would advise her to do.
Okay.
Hey.
Oh, your throat can be
a little sore from the tube.
Did did they find her?
Yeah.
I didn't know what to do.
When when she came out, she wasn't
there was no sound.
Okay, Jenny,
I just want you to rest, okay?
I tried.
I know CPR.
I took a class, and I tried,
but but she wasn't breathing.
And I I just
She was stillborn, Jenny.
[SOMBER MUSIC]
She had already died
in your uterus weeks earlier.
But if I called 911,
they could have shocked her heart.
- They could have
- No, no, no.
There's nothing you could have done.
Nothing.
Can I ask
why didn't you ever go see a doctor
to discuss your options?
I didn't know I was pregnant.
I mean, not not for sure.
I never took a pregnancy test.
Why not?
Because that would have made it real.
You talk to DCFS?
I did.
Reunification with Lucas's bio parents
is being put on hold pending
a thorough investigation,
and if that goes the way
I think it will,
kid's gonna have himself
a nice new set of parents.
Come on.
You're a real-life superhero.
You banished the monsters.
Sure did.
Eight years too late.
[SIGHS]
Hey.
Thought your shift was over hours ago.
It was.
What are you still doing here?
I didn't feel like going home yet.
Yeah?
One of those days, huh?
Wanna talk about it?
- I don't. Thanks.
- All right.
Do you wanna come by
and help me pass out candy?
You pass out candy?
As opposed to what, bobbing for apples?
Turning off all the lights
and pretending no one's home.
Yeah.
And miss my yearly opportunity
to eat my weight
in miniature Snickers? No way.
Okay, well, Snickers, fine.
I'm in.
I've just I've been super
craving chocolate lately.
Must be having a girl
if you're craving sweets.
Yeah, that's just an old wives' tale.
Oh.
So what do you think you're having?
- No clue.
- Really?
You don't have, like, a sixth
sense or anything like that?
My gosh. Leanne was positive.
She knew we were having
a boy by week six.
Yeah, I really just haven't
thought too much about it.
Oh.
[SOFT TENSE MUSIC]
What's "oh"?
Just find that interesting, that's all.
- It's just
- Why are you analyzing me?
Oh, Hannah, I'm not analyzing you.
Yes, you are.
Look, if you wanna
find out the sex so bad,
go ahead and do it.
We don't need to make
every decision together.
- Oh, please. I
- Look, I'm just gonna go home.
I feel like we could use a little space.

Will you share some
of your candy with me?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
The lights are really nice.
I like your costume.
- Wanna come with us?
- Can, I Mom?
Oh, don't you wanna stay with us, honey?
I wanna go with them. Please.
Uh, okay, but you need to stay
where I can see you at all times.
If you can't see me,
you've gone too far.
Okay.
Come on.
Not too fast, Emelia. Slow down.
She'll be fine.
I'm not exactly running yet,
and Emelia moves fast.
Yeah, well, I got eyes on her.
I have to see her.
You don't trust me?
No, I don't trust me.
[SOFT MUSIC]
I swear, I wasn't always
such a helicopter parent.
Then my daughter fell down
a literal well, and now
I never wanna let her out of my sight.
I'm afraid if I look away
for even a second,
the ground will swallow her up again.
That's what it looked like
when she fell.
I couldn't see the well at first.
It was too dark.
It looked like the Earth
just suddenly swallowed her whole.
I can't imagine
anything more terrifying.
And obviously, this relieves
only at most 0.0001%
of the crushing responsibility
you must feel at all times.
But just so you know,
whenever I'm around,
I got eyes on her too.
I'm not gonna let
anything happen to her.
I know.
I know you won't.

Where is she, though?
She's right there.
[SIGHS] Thank goodness.
Come on.
Hey, Kip, I'm sorry, but I'm
just not gonna make it tonight.
It's been a long day, and I'm beat,
so tell Gemma that I'm looking forward
to meeting her another time, okay?
Tell her yourself.
What are you doing here?
I knew you'd bail, so I came
here to personally escort you.
- Kip, you can't
- No, no.
No Kip anything, okay? You're coming.
Caty, I am in love.
For the first time in my life,
I am buying paper towels
and toilet paper in bulk.
That's Gemma's doing.
I'm thinking and planning ahead
because I actually
see a future with this woman.
You do seem different.
Grown-up job, grown-up relationship.
Mm-hmm. That's the Gemma effect.
And I suppose figuring out
that I'm not hurtling
towards a early death
doesn't hurt either.
Although I see that it's had
the opposite effect on you?
I mean, having one-night stands
with the QuickEats guy?
It's not really your style.
Yeah, well, you don't really
know anything about my style.
I think that we both
know each other better
than we'd like to admit.
I'm really happy for you.
Then rally and come
to the bar for an hour.
Fine. All right.
Let's go to the bar and meet
your future first wife.
And if you do want
Mom's ring to propose
Forget about that.
I think that was a tad premature.
I don't wanna creep Gemma out
by proposing two months in.
True.
You should let your
action figure collection
- do that for you.
- Mm-hmm.
Besides, uh, you should keep the ring
for when you get married.
It's what Mom would have wanted.
Thank you, Anna Banana.
You are such a lifesaver.
I just feel so much better
having somebody in the house, you know?
Everything in the fridge is yours,
except, of course, my moo goo gai pan.
That's right, baby.
No moo goo for you goo.
- All right.
- [LAUGHING]
I'll call you from Miami. Love you.
Have fun at that conference.
Oh, I can't wait.
[PHONE CHIMES]
Oh, wait. Hold on.
It's a call from Bert's facility.
This is Sharon Goodwin.
[SOMBER MUSIC]
Tamika?
What?
Is he okay?
Well, did you call the paramedics?
All right. I'm on my way.
- I'll see you shortly.
- What happened?
Uh, I don't exactly know.
Bert had a fall.
- I gotta go.
- Should I come?
- It sounds serious.
- Oh, no. Your flight.
Daniel, please don't change your plans.
Let me see what's going on,
and I'll keep you posted.
- Okay.
- Yeah.
- You promise?
- I promise.
I heard him fall.
I don't know if he
tripped over something.
- Did he hit his head?
- I think so.
There's a gash in the back.
And he was already unconscious
when you got to him?
No, no, he was still
opening his eyes at first,
and then he stopped.
