When Calls The Heart (2014) s13e01 Episode Script

Up in the Air

1
Previously on When Calls the Heart
I want to create a
legacy wilderness project.
They want to name the park after Goldie.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
I'm done with that kind of thing.
This is my son, Christopher.
Ollie, let's dance.
I am at your service, Miss Martell.
It could be dehydration,
but I still want to run
some tests to be sure.
What else could it be?
Little Jack has diabetes.
Elizabeth, I have mail for you.
It's a letter from your Grandma.
I think she just wants to make sure
that Jack is getting
the best care he can.
What if moving is saying goodbye?
We'll figure it out, together.
Where you go, I go.
[BRIGHT, UPLIFTING MUSIC]
So how are we making out
with the kid's guidebooks to the park?
Opal assures me they will
be ready for the printer
- by 9 a.m. tomorrow.
- Excellent.
But look at this. Oh.
The season announcements
of the playhouse.
Yeah.
Michael, hey, how are we
making out with that song
for the opening ceremonies?
- It's getting there.
- Getting there?
[ROSEMARY CHUCKLES]
We have a national
park opening in two days
and nothing is ready.
How are you so calm?
Oh, Lee.
Elizabeth is coming home.
We'll all be together again.
The world is right.
I hope so.
So what's the first
thing you're gonna do
when we get home, kiddo?
I'm gonna see Robert,
and Cooper, and Toby,
and play baseball, and
go for a ride on Pal.
[LAUGHS] My goodness!
Remember not to tire yourself out.
Why don't you go get ready to leave?
Okay, Mama!
I can't believe we're
finally going home.
It was a pretty great summer.
Nathan, why don't you
take a break before we go?
I don't think Charlotte expects you
to finish her entire to-do list.
Pretty sure you've already won her over.
Well, it never hurts to make sure.
And then the Kaiser takes a dive,
thinking he can shake him.
But you can't shake an Airco DH-4.
Mr. Rivington's telling me
all about his cousin in the Air Force.
Cousin?
Skeet, I thought that was your nephew.
Well, of course he's my
nephew. That's what I said.
Right. This was about the
dogfight with the albatross.
Ah. You see?
This is a gentleman who pays attention.
[PHONE RINGS]
[SIGHS]
Thornton Boarding House.
Of course, operator.
Lucas! Hi. We were just
getting ready to leave.
[CHUCKLES]
Oh, no.
Well, there must be something we can do.
Apparently, there is only one inspector
authorized to approve
new insulin clinics.
In the entire country?
[LUCAS] With the
railroad strike back east,
he's stuck in Toronto until
we don't know when.
So we spent the summer
getting a backup generator,
a year's supply of glucose tests,
a state of the art freezer,
and now we can't even use it?
We can use it,
and you'll have plenty of
insulin this weekend, but
they can't guarantee future deliveries
until we're approved.
[ELIZABETH] But guaranteed insulin
is the whole reason we had to leave.
Without it
[LUCAS] I'm so sorry, Elizabeth.
Do you have any idea
how long this could take?
Hopefully the strike is over by winter.
Otherwise, he's not due
to come again until spring.
[SIGHS]
But we'll see you this weekend at least.
[LUCAS] I'm really sorry, Elizabeth.
[HANGS UP]
[EXHALES]
[ALLIE] What about school?
We're supposed to start next week.
Well, you'll start here with Elizabeth.
It's not forever.
I guess I'll go unpack
some of my things.
[SIGHS]
Maybe we don't all have to stay.
No. We're in this together.
That's the deal, Elizabeth.
I'll call Hargraves.
Nathan, I hate to see you
stuck at that desk job.
It's fine.
I'm learning a lot about paperwork.
Poor little Jack.
He was so ready to be at home for good.
[CHARLOTTE] What's going on?
I heard you're only
going for the weekend.
If you don't mind.
It seems there's a delay with
the insulin clinic back home.
They can't find an
inspector to approve it,
so until they can
You'll just stay here as
long as you need, of course.
Thank you so much, Charlotte.
Well, I should go help
little Jack unpack.
- I can help him if you like.
- No, no. It's fine.
I should break the news.
Well, at least now I
can teach your daughter
to play a decent hand of poker.
That girl cannot bluff.
A tribute to you, I suppose.
Well, and I can finally
get through your to-do list.
Nathan?
I
had all this prepared for
when we said goodbye today,
but I better just say it.
When I heard that I was
going to have a grandson,
it was as if a
a little piece of Jack
had been given back to me.
And it wasn't easy to
think of anyone else
being a father to him.
But
despite what I might think
of that dubious mustache
You're honorable.
And you are kind.
And you are as good a man as my son was.
- In your own way.
- Mmm.
And if I had any doubt,
all I'd have to do is
take a look at that gem
of a daughter of yours
to know that my grandson
couldn't hope for a better father.
Thank you, Charlotte.
But we haven't I
- I haven't
- Oh.
- proposed.
- I know.
But you will.
Come here.
Don't mess this up.
And have a good weekend.
[CHEERFUL MUSIC]
[LAUGHTER]
[LEE] Look who's back!
[ROSEMARY] Oh my goodness! You made it!
Little Jack, oh my goodness!
[LEE] Good to see you.
[ROSEMARY] Isn't this exciting?
We finally got you back.
[THEME MUSIC PLAYS]

There's only one inspector
in the entire country?
[MEI] After all that work
we did over the summer,
just to be derailed by the inspection.
Derailed by a railroad strike.
Look, we just have to
enjoy the weekend together,
and hopefully we'll be home soon.
Hey, our hero is home.
Ah. Looks like you two
held the fort down nicely.
- Nice to see you, sir.
- [NATHAN] Constable.
Nice mustache.
I didn't know you were I wasn't
I guess we both have good taste.
[OLIVER] I cleared all my
things out of your house.
I know Scout will be
happy to have you back.
Hey, Jackaroo! [LAUGHS]
Look at you.
- Hi, Oliver.
- Mrs. Thornton.
Welcome home.
Wow. That is quite the handshake.
He's been working up his strength
writing those letters
to Allie all summer.
Dad.
Why don't you give me a hand here?
Hi. Your hair, is shorter?
[OPAL] Allie!
Thank goodness you're back.
I know.
But it's only for the weekend, though.
What? Why?
I've got somebody
who'd like to say hello.
I missed you.
Oh.
[CHUCKLES]
Little Jack,
would you like to see your new clinic?
Yeah.
Looks good out here.
Well, at least one thing's done on time.
Thanks to that son of yours.
Oh, Christopher was a help, was he?
I don't think I could
have done it without him.
It would seem that new
job at the electric company
is going rather well.
Well, it seems so.
[ENGINE RUMBLING]
[LEE] Look who it is.
Hello there.
Good to see you, son.
You look well.
Um, Mr. Whitaker,
you know Mayor Coulter.
Good to see you.
But this is my father, Henry Gowan.
Pleasure to meet you.
Christopher speaks very highly of you.
Pioneer Electric is lucky to have him.
He's a real asset.
[LEE] Yes, he is.
And I can't wait to take you
on a tour of the new playhouse.
All this power is gonna
light up that stage.
Christopher led the charge, so to speak.
And here it is.
The only electric freezer
in the whole territory.
And as soon as the inspector comes,
it'll be full of insulin every week.
Wow. What do you think of that, kiddo?
I think we should stay.
It's hard waiting, isn't it?
Lily
Why don't you and Rufus
take little Jack outside
to show him the new vegetable garden?
Well, that sounds like fun.
- I'll go with them.
- Thanks, Molly.
Um, I should go check on Bill.
I can't thank you enough.
You both you've-you've done so much.
How are you?
Well, I am trusting that everything will
work out how it's meant to.
When it's meant to.
We'll get you all home soon.
Gosh, so much has changed
in just a few short months.
You've changed your hair.
And you have red fingernails.
Well, we may be modernizing,
but Hope Valley will
always be Hope Valley.
Here's the Benson Hills Beetle
you asked for, Mrs. Coulter.
Yes. Thank you so much, Toby.
Now. how is your essay
coming for the kids' guidebook
for Goldie National Park?
Coming.
Hmm.
All right, let's see what the
Benson Hills Beetle has to say
about the opening of the
park and the playhouse.
Mm?
Oh, excuse me.
Minnie!
- Minnie! Hi.
- Oh, Elizabeth.
It's so wonderful to see you back.
Oh, it's good to see you, too.
If only we were staying.
Oh, I heard.
Do you know how long it'll take?
Well, we're at the mercy
of a railroad strike,
so it's anybody's guess.
Which is why I was hoping
that you might be able
to take over my
classroom until I'm back.
Oh, dear.
I know, I should have
had a back up plan.
No, I meant how hard it is
for you to miss the
start of the school year.
Oh.
Well, I'll still be working
with little Jack and Allie at home,
just like you did with Angela.
It's like we're trading places.
I'm sure the students
will miss you terribly.
And I'll miss them, too.
But it isn't forever.
I would love to help you if I can.
Let me discuss it with Joseph.
- Thank you so much, Minnie.
- Of course.
[WELCOMING MUSIC PLAYING]
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
As your mayor, it has been my mission
to bring new ideas to Hope Valley
to light the way forward.
And now, thanks to the
Pioneer Electric Company,
and the opening of Golden National Park,
I am very proud to present to you
Hope Valley's very first traffic signal.
[APPLAUSE]
Hey, fella, you wanna give me a hand?
Okay.
Just take that lever.
Oh, it seems like that young
man finally turned a corner.
Like father, like son.
Oh.
[HONKING]
Can you wave? Can you wave?
Wave!
Oh.
What's this for?
It's really good to see
you back where you belong.
Where you are is where I belong.
[BILL] Thank you.
Mr. MacGinty, what brings you by?
All this to give prime ranch land
to a bunch of tourists.
Well, as I recall, you blocked
access to your rancher friends
so you can fleece them.
See how this works for you, Avery.
Are you threatening a
law enforcement officer?
What was all that about?
He's been nosing around all summer
trying to stir up trouble.
I thought we dealt with him.
I know sometimes it's
the old wounded lion
you've got to worry about.
What if a herd of cattle came through,
would you have to ticket each one?
Um, I'll have to get
back to you on that.
Hi. Um
I got you this.
It's from Cape Fullerton.
Pheasant jerky?
It's sort of a specialty there.
I guess it's kind of a weird gift.
It's no can of beans, but
[LAUGHS]
Is it true you're only
here for the weekend?
Yeah. I'll have to start the
school year in Cape Fullerton.
It'll be fun.
Wow. Great.
I mean
I gotta go finish my
map for the park guide.
- I'll see you around.
- Yeah.
[ENGINE RUMBLING]
Governor. Welcome home.
Nathan.
Good to see you.
Yeah, it's good to be back.
Say, you didn't happen to see
our traffic light there, did you?
I did. I helped get it approved.
[NATHAN] Oh.
Well,
then you know that
it's a traffic violation
- when you run a red.
- I certainly do.
But I guess you were a
little distracted there.
[CHUCKLES]
Apologies.
I thought you were
only here for a visit.
You think this is all for show?
Isn't it?
Yeah, technically it is.
But I guess I could let you off
with a warning just this once.
No, that's all right. Go ahead.
No man is above the law.
Okay.
Oh, and uh, Lucas,
thanks for all the help with
the insulin clinic this summer.
It's my pleasure.
We'll get it over the finish line.
[CHUCKLES]
Someone ought to talk to the
Governor about these fines.
Drive safe now.
Oh. Hello.
Lee insisted that I use your
office while you were away.
Apologies for the mess.
It's not a problem.
You need a lawyer to
contest that traffic ticket?
I might. Do you know anyone?
I do, but she has had her hands full
litigating disputes over
fence lines and stolen pigs.
I can always call if
you think she'd pick up.
It's been a busy summer.
For everyone, it seems.
In any case,
the office is all yours.
Where are you going?
Judge Avery has an extra desk.
It's a bit cozy in here for two.
[CHUCKLES]
I think we can fit a
second desk in here.
I don't mind, if you don't.
Well, I
suppose it's no more crowded
than sharing a table at the café.
I look forward to
working together again.
And perhaps lunch this afternoon.
I promised the ladies I'd
help them hang bunting.
So you're in with the ladies now?
I made friends with those who
were actually here this summer.
Touché.
Don't work too hard, Governor.
[SCOFFS]
Um [CLEARS THROAT]
Who's been brushing you
while I've been away, huh?
Who's been looking after you?
Mm?
Not me.
Looks like he missed you.
Yeah? Is that right?
Did you miss me, friend?
It's really something seeing
you two out there today.
Where are you off to?
I'm bringing some
lesson plans to Minnie.
She agreed to take over
my class until I'm back.
It's the first time I won't be
teaching in the fall since
I can't remember.
You know, I remember
when Allie was younger.
She'd stay at her grandmother's house.
She'd still call every night, but
when she heard my voice,
she just got so sad.
It can be hard
to get a taste of home when
you're not quite there yet.
I guess it's just hitting me
that we have to go
back to Cape Fullerton.
I just really miss home.
We'll be back soon.
[TENDER MUSIC]
Well, I better get to Minnie.
Minnie.
You've sent enough jam
for the entire
Schwartzman School by now.
Angela says everyone's asking for more.
It feels uh-feels funny to start
the school year without her, doesn't it?
Hmm.
Apparently we won't
have Elizabeth, either.
So, uh
she's asked if I can
fill in for her at school.
That's wonderful news, Minnie.
Oh, I don't know.
Maybe it's too much.
Running the café, taking care
of Cooper, the church choir?
We can help out with all of that.
Those kids will be lucky to have you.
I cannot believe he
said that kid was safe.
You tagged him out, clear as day.
Ooh! Cookies! May I?
Oh, yes. Of course.
What are you boys up to?
Trying to finish our summer
fun list before school starts.
Well, you can still have fun
after the school year starts,
even if your new
teacher is Mrs. Canfield.
Really? You'll be our teacher?
Well, it's not decided yet,
but maybe just until
Mrs. Thornton is back.
But your mother can only
do it if we all help out.
I can work after school.
I've learned how to cook
almost everything on the menu.
I-I'll help, too.
Hmm?
Well, I guess it's settled then.
[JOSEPH CHUCKLES]
Sure enough, ten minutes later,
he's saying exactly what I
said, like it's his own idea.
You call him out on it?
No, I
Maybe a year ago I would have.
But I figured you know what,
it just means I'm good
enough to steal from.
Well, I'll tell you what,
it took me 40 years to learn
how to keep my trap shut.
So I figure you're ahead of the game.
Yeah, it still feels like
I'm making up for lost
time, though, you know?
This-this-this job, it's
a real chance for me.
I'm not going to blow it.
You like the work?
Yeah.
I like being good at it.
And helping folks, sure.
Plus, I-I think it'll probably help
get Rachel's parents off the fence
about us getting engaged.
Don't take this the wrong way.
You seem like you're doing great,
but remember that you're more
than just your job, right?
Yeah, of course.
Yeah, I know that.
Thank you.
[CLEARS THROAT]
You know, at first she didn't want
- to have lunch with me.
- Mm-hmm.
And then she gives me
this warning and she says
"don't work too hard".
What does that mean?
I guess it means work,
but don't work too hard?
Do I work too hard?
[SIGHS]
Who's asking?
Oh.
Seems the Governor is back in town.
Hmm.
So he is.
Keeping close, I hear?
As work colleagues.
We share an office. Nothing more.
Would you like there to be more?
- Well
- When I left, things were
Good. And then he left.
And I know he had to leave.
- He had a
- Territory to govern.
An insulin clinic to help set up.
Work that I admire him for doing.
Not to mention a re-election campaign.
Can one really expect
personal calls amidst all of that?
Can one really work too hard
when there's so much to be done?
Still, I-I admit.
I miss playing cards with her.
I miss butting heads with him.
And now that we're going to be working
in such close proximity, it
It feels like an opportunity.
But for what?
I just don't want to mess this up.
Whatever it is.
Whatever it is,
I can't just drop everything
and have lunch at a moment's notice.
Yes. It seems you're both terribly busy.
Mm-hmm.
You want my advice?
No. Yes.
You can't keep waffling.
I'm serious.
It's no way to govern,
and it's no way to live.
Listen, Lucas, my friend,
you have to decide exactly
what it is you want,
and then you need to tell her.
I know. [LAUGHS]
I will.
- After we crack this speech.
- Sure.
[PEACEFUL MUSIC]
- [TOBY] Hi, Mrs. Thornton.
- [GASPS] Oh!
Toby, what are you doing here?
Just trying to finish my essay
for that kid's guide to Goldie Park.
Oh. How's it going?
I guess I'm not very inspired.
Why don't you read me
what you have so far.
It's only one line.
Some people think rocks are boring.
Hmm.
Can you remember the first
time you really saw a rock?
Once I found this rock
that used to be a part
of the river bed before it dried up,
and it still had grooves from the water.
Well, why don't you write about that?
How rocks tell the story of Goldie Park.
Or maybe I could write
the story of one rock
and how it got there.
I love that idea.
Remember what we talked about last year?
How a writer can use one small thing
to talk about a whole big thing.
[SNAPS FINGERS] A metaphor.
Yes, exactly!
I'm going to give you five minutes,
and then you can read me
what you've written so far.
Ready?
Minnie. Hi. Come in.
Hi.
I was just helping Toby
get started on an essay.
Oh, I don't want to interrupt.
No, no, not at all.
I brought some lesson plans for you.
We can go over them together.
Oh.
This is quite a lot.
Oh, it's really not that hard.
When you listen to the children,
they'll tell you where they want to go.
Oh, and
Oh, thank you.
We're all going to miss
you terribly, Elizabeth.
- [ALLIE] There you are.
- Hi, Allie.
I'm just getting Mrs. Canfield set up.
What do you need?
I was wondering if you could
take a look at my introduction
for the kids' guidebook.
Oh, sure.
Why don't you read it
to me while we walk?
My first day in Hope Valley
I skipped school to
go fishing in the creek
that now runs through Goldie Park.
- [ELIZABETH LAUGHS]
- Sorry again.
Mm-hmm.
Back then, I moved around a lot,
so you'd think I'd be used
to starting at new schools,
but I was scared every time.
Afraid that no one would
want to sit with me at lunch,
that I'd be lonely.
So instead, I followed
the friendly sound
of running water.
I listened to the calm breath
of the wind through the trees.
I lay in the grass and felt all the life
around me and under me.
And I knew that I would
never be alone again.
Not really.
This land is more than just the park.
It's my home and it's my heart.
Maybe it can be yours, too.
Welcome to Goldie Park.
Oh, Allie.
It's perfect.
- You think?
- Mm-hmm.
I kept trying to write it all summer.
As soon as I got here,
it all just came out of me.
I can see why.
I am so happy to be back.
But it's strange, too.
Oliver seems different.
Ah, well, it's probably the mustache.
[LAUGHS]
It's normal for it to take time
to get back in the swing of things.
He's being all weird.
It's making me weird.
Maybe you just need to get back
to the way things were before.
I know Mrs. Coulter is still
waiting on Oliver's map.
He might like some help with that.
I bet he got lost in the details.
Oliver.
[GIGGLES]
I can turn that in for you.
- Would you?
- Mm-hmm.
Thanks, Elizabeth.

[KNOCKING]
Oh hi.
Is my dad here?
I think he's still in the stables.
Is that for the kids' guide?
Yeah. Uh, I don't know
what made me decide
to add all the pine trees.
Wait, is this the "no
trespassing" sign from our hike?
Yeah, I threw it in there.
[LAUGHS]
We've sure had some
adventures in these woods.
Hopefully we'll have some more.
Your mustache?
I was kind of done with it.
- Do you
- Would you want to
You go first.
Some of us were planning
on going on a hike tomorrow
to check the trail markers
if you wanted to come.
It's my day off, so
that'll work.
Great.
What were you gonna say?
Oh, I was just gonna ask if
you wanted some pheasant jerky.
She is something, that kid.
She said it poured out of
her as soon as she got here.
Hope Valley magic, huh?
Hm.
[SIGHS]
Nathan, I can't make her
go back to Cape Fullerton.
She's already accepted
it. It's only temporary.
Which is why I think you
two need to stay here.
What?
It's her last year of school.
She wants to be with her friends.
And as soon as the clinic gets approved,
- then we'll come back and
- What're you talking about?
- No, no, no.
- Just listen.
You two gave up everything
to be with us this summer,
and I'll never forget it.
But it's enough sacrifice.
Elizabeth, little Jack needed us.
It wasn't a sacrifice.
You belong here, too, Nathan.
When I saw you up on Newton
Do you want to be alone?
Huh? What, are you going to be
in Cape Fullerton by yourself
making oatmeal for Skeet?
It doesn't matter what I want.
I know that you want to fix this.
But some things just are what they are.
And it's like you said,
it's just a bump in the road, right?
We'll be fine.
I'll be fine.
There was something in her
that I'd never seen before.
Resignation.
It was like the light in
her eyes just went out.
She was almost home
and it got taken away.
And after everything
she's already been through?
I-I know.
I don't know that we do.
She almost lost her little boy.
It's probably hard to trust
that anything will ever be okay again.
I just-I don't want to lose her.
Then
we need to be Elizabeth.
We need to find a way,
even when it seems like there isn't one.
We need to be her light.
We all moved mountains this
summer, setting up that clinic.
I wish there was more I could do,
but I can't fly an inspector
in on a magic carpet.
"Sometimes, I have
believed as many as six
impossible things before breakfast."
Lewis Carroll.
[DOOR CLOSES]
It is an inspiring quote.
[PHONE RINGS]
Whoever you are, it is nearly 10 p.m.
[NATHAN] Hi, it's Nathan
Grant. Look, I'm sorry
to call so late, but it's
a bit of an emergency.
Nothing's wrong.
Everybody's fine.
Just an urgent situation.
Which I realize now is the
definition of an emergency.
Nathan, what's the point?
I'm hoping that you
will go and wake Mr. Rivington for me.
You want me to wake Skeet after 10 p.m.?
Charlotte, it's for Elizabeth.
It would mean so much to me
if you were able to
help me out with this.
Nathan. Less mustache, more clarity.
Why am I waking Mr. Rivington?

It's here!
Oh, the Kids Guidebook!
And not a moment too soon.
I drew the cover!
- Oh!
- Everyone did incredible work.
Toby told the story of
the whole park in one rock.
It's marvelous.
I never could have done
it without Mrs. Thornton.
No. All you needed was a nudge.
Come on, let's get them on display.
Oh, yes.
Dad, look! The Kids' Guidebook.
Wow. You finished in record time, huh?
I guess where there's
a will, there's a way.
You shaved?
Yeah.
Matching the young constable
didn't seem like a good look.
So you're staying?
That's good now just uh-huh, and
Sweetheart. It doesn't matter.
Leland Coulter, of course it matters.
This is for posterity.
The whole park is for posterity.
Well, everything except
my playhouse, I suppose.
What exactly is that supposed to mean?
Don't pretend you didn't see it.
That article in the Benson Hills Beetle
that said what was it?
My playhouse is nothing but
"a vanity project by a former actress".
That was just nonsense.
Is it?
Sweetheart, listen to me, okay?
This is very important.
You are the most big-hearted, generous,
talented force of nature
woman that I have ever known.
[CLEARS THROAT]
