The guests staying here are from the UK.
They all say they
haven't a clue who he is
or what he was doing here,

Stronger than you're used to.
Inspector!
Got something you should see.
This is the only security
camera footage from the villa.
The footage is from this morning,
outside the front door.
The victim arrives at 5:32am,
heads inside.
The door was unlocked,
so he let himself in.
After that, nobody is seen
leaving or arriving.
So the only way in or out
is from the front,
and the drop at the back
is too steep for access.
So It's got to be one of these four
who shot Darrian St Jules.
Which means the gun that
they used must still be here.
But they're all saying
they've never met him before.
So why would one of them
kill a total stranger?
Hello, can I help you?
Hi, we've come to check in.

We should have just gone to

None of this would have happened.
Gav do you think there's something
Helen's not telling us?
She's been on edge
ever since the police arrived.
So why did Darrian go to that villa
at 5:30 in the morning?
Hmm.
Let's see what we find at his house.
How are you getting on, sir?
Well, I haven't found anything
that connects our victim
to the suspects,
but I have found this -
the victim’s aftershave.
Really? This again?
It's different to the one he
was wearing at the crime scene.
Here, have a sniff.
I haven't found any others here,
and there certainly
wasn't one on his person.
So why did he smell different
to the brand of aftershave
that he owns?
So, I searched the suspects,
the villa and surrounding
areas, and there was no gun.
No, it has to be there.
No-one left the villa
after the victim was shot,
so the weapon has to be there somewhere.

you wired £100,000 from this island
to your bank account back in England.
No, he didn't.
What?
Want to tell us where
you got that money from?
What did you do, Neil?
Yes, Neil, what did you do?
- I followed you.
- Why?
You were acting so weird.
A few days ago, when
you went off by yourself.
I knew that it had to be about
the money that Ashley had taken.
I'm sorry
I couldn't understand
why you didn't tell me.
I know you were just trying to protect
me, Mum, but I was worried about you.
I was just trying to help.
So I waited until the
guy, Darrian, had left.
The door was unlocked,
so I let myself in.
There wasn't anything I could find,
until I found an old biscuit tin.
It was full of money.
And what did you think
when you opened it and saw
£100,000 in cash inside?
What I still think -
that it was money
that belonged to the company.
Why else would this local fisherman have
that much money in sterling
in his house?
And that's why you took it?
Cos it was money that Ashley
had stolen from us. From Mum.
And I don't want
to see her lose everything.
Not after she'd already lost my dad.
Oh, sweetheart.
HE SNIFFS
All right.
OK.
So, fast-forward to the morning you
were due to leave the island, yeah?
Our victim turns up at 5:30.
We've been trying to work out
why he went there that morning.
But what if he realised
that you stole from him
and came to confront you about it?
No. On my life,
I I I didn't even see him
that morning.
This aftershave - It's yours,
right? Rivage Mystique?
Yeah. Why?
This is the exact same
aftershave Darrian was wearing
the morning of the murder.
Right?
AFTERSHAVE SPRAYS
You're not suggesting that
this is evidence I shot him?
Why would I kill someone
and then spray him
with my own aftershave?
SHE SNEEZES
Darrian definitely smelled
of this when we found him.
But why?
What if there was another smell
the killer was trying to hide?
You know, a bit like your binman.
Yeah, but What?
Neil's right. It's not enough.
Some Christmas this is.
Oh, come here.
Give your mum a hug.
PHONE RINGS
Oh, hang on. Sorry.
Oh.
No, not now, Marjorie.
VOICEMAIL:
Hi, this is Helen Dugdale's phone.
Please leave a message after the
tone and I'll call you back.
BEEP
Hello, Helen, it's Marjorie.
I'm phoning to wish you
a merry Christmas.
We're about to have our lunch,
and I just wanted to let you know
that I'm thinking of you all.
Hope everything sorts itself out soon.
CHRISTMAS MUSIC ON RADIO
Dinner is served.
This looks wonderful.
Thank you.
Ah!
Here's to a merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas.
Mmm!
Right, then. Tuck in.
I would like to offer you
an apology, Miss Dodds.
Oh, Marjorie, please.
And there's really
no need for an apology.
Oh, there is.
You've been nothing
but gracious and welcoming
for the last couple
of days, while I
I've been nothing but, um
grouchy.
Ha! No, no, I
wouldn't go that far.
Though
I did sense you weren't very happy.
Is it to do with your old job?
What makes you ask that?
I don't know. It's just
when we first met, the way
you said you were retired,
it was like you weren't
entirely comfortable with it.
My superiors back on Saint Marie,
they tried to get rid of me,
after 50 years of doing a job I loved.
In the end, I
I just walked away.
Oh, I know what it's like.
I'm just silly old Marjorie
on reception.
Don't even get invited
to the Christmas party
they're having out there.
I'm sorry.
And I've always wanted
to go to the Caribbean.
Look at us, moping like
this on Christmas Day,
when you've cooked this feast for us!
We should be enjoying ourselves.
Here.
Will you do me the pleasure?
Oh, well, if you insist!
Ah!
I won!
I won!
Oh, where's it gone?
Where's it gone?
SHE LAUGHS
Oh, here it is.
It's a tiny little sewing kit.
SEB: All right, um, let me
check with the Inspector.
OK, speak to you soon. Bye.
Hey! Merry Christmas, guys.
Merry Christmas, Seb.
Yeah, ditto.
Now, where are we at with
the search for Ashley Simms?
So, um, B&Bs, hotels, guest houses -
nobody's heard from her.
And no-one's called in
with a sighting either.
It's like she's vanished into thin air.
Oh, and Catherine just called.
She said she can still squeeze us in
for her Christmas Day lunch,
but it's her last sitting,
so we have to go now.
And we're still asking ourselves,
"How was Darrian shot
with a bullet fired from a gun"
"locked in a drawer in Swindon
at the time that it happened?"
And what has Blitzen
got to do with all of this?
Are you coming, sir?
Well, yeah, you guys go.
I'll just keep working.
Are you sure, sir?
Wait a minute.
- What are these?
- Oh, those are invoices, sir.
You know, for the stuff I organised
to help find Ashley Simms.
You have, um, posters, adverts
for TV and radio and
there's over $1,000 that we owe.
- We can't afford this!
- Well, I
How big did you think our budget was?
It's only because you said,
"Whatever it takes."
Yeah, but not this much!
I mean, what were you thinking?
All right, let's
Let's calm it.
Seb, why don't you head over
to Catherine's
and I'll catch up with you?
With respect, he's just
doing his best to help,
and he's given up his Christmas
to do it, sir.
Look, I know the case is frustrating
and you've got other things
on your mind
What other things?
Well, your brother not calling.
What? That's not bothering me.
- It isn’t'.
- It isn't?
- No, it isn't.
- Yes, it is.
Of course it is.
And I really wish you'd just admit that
rather than pretending
like you don't care
when you so clearly care!
Just don't take it out
on the rest of us.
HE SIGHS
Joyeux Noel, Camille.
And to little Chloe.
Her grandmother is missing her today.
Has she opened her presents yet?
No, not yet.
Ah, one moment, Camille.
Yes, OK. I miss you.
No Mervin?

Inspector.
Everything all right?
I'm feeling bad, sir, about
messing up your Christmas.
I'm sorry you couldn't get
to spend it with your daughter.
It's not your fault.
If anyone's to blame, it's
the British transport system
which, I am told, is not uncommon.
I mean
I'd like to say you get used
to it, but I'd be lying.
Just a minute.
WAVES LAPPING GENTLY
ls that the sea I can hear?
Yep. I'm at the shack.
It's beautiful out here.
It's a really clear night.
But then, all nights are
like that here, aren't they?
The moon here is a little
more grey than I remember it
in Saint Marie.
I'm just wondering if I made a mistake,
staying on in Saint Marie.
- Why?
- Because
I know I'm not good
when I put myself on the line.
I feel like I'm just
hanging around, waiting.
Your brother.
Yeah.
I don't think he wants to get in touch.
I'm sorry. It's not really your
problem any more, is it,
whether I stay or go?
It still feels like it is.
Inspector, if you are
not sure what to do,
the only advice I can offer is that
you put your trust in that island.
I did, for most of my life.
And in return, it delivered
me true happiness.
If Saint Marie won't
bring your brother to you,
then perhaps
it will bring yousomeone
or something else.
Be patient.
Yeah, well, you know patience
isn't my forte, right?
I know.
And what am I supposed to do
in the meantime?
Might I suggest you focus on
solving that case you have?
You're missed here, you know.
Goodnight, Inspector.
Blitzen. Why Blitzen?
KNOCKING
- Officer Rose.
- Inspector.
What's up?
I wanted to come and say I'm sorry,
for spending all that money
you don't have in your budget.
So, er, I wanted to pay it back.
There's $322 and 86 cents in there,
which I took from my savings.
I mean, it's all my savings,
but that's cool.
And if you deduct $20
from my wages each month,
it should be paid back in about
two years, I reckon.
Officer Rose.
You’ve got a good heart.
Anyone ever tell you that?
Well, my auntie, like,
all the time, you know?
- Take this.
- But I thought
You don't have to pay anything back.
We'll find it in the budget.
And there's no need
to apologise, all right?
In fact, I should apologise
for blazing at you like that.
What you did was, um
was really good work.
Anyway, come on. I've got a new lead.
Let's go and wake DS Thomas up.
DOORBELL RINGING REPEATEDLY
He can't keep doing this.
Happy Boxing Day, DS Thomas.
Listen, um
.. I want to apologise,
for losing it and ruining Christmas.
I'll make it up to you, I promise.
And you were right
about me taking it out on you
because of Solomon.
I just really wanted it, you know?
I'm sorry, too.
Good morning, Sarge!
Heh-heh! The Inspector tell you
the good news yet?
He's only gone and made
a big breakthrough in the case,
which is a big relief,
cos I was drawing a blank.
Ha! You have tea?
So I've been going through Darrian
St Jules's phone records,
and he phoned someone the day
before he was murdered -
a friend of his called Treshaun King.
Now, he was over on Montserrat
for Christmas.
So I asked Darlene to speak with him.
Darlene? Last night?
Yeah. And how was she with that?
Er, you know, she was
She was cool with it.
Inspector, it's Christmas Day.
What in God's name
do you think you're doing?
Anyway, it turned out
Darrian feared for his life
and was asking Treshaun where
he could get hold of a gun,
for protection.
He thought someone
was going to kill him?
Did he say who?
Uh-uh. But he did say
he was caught up in something
he shouldn't have.
And get this. He thought
the woman he was trying to help
had been murdered.
Now I'm caught up in it all.
And now he was worried that he
was going to suffer the same fate.
Wait, wait, wait. Darrian told Treshaun
he thought Ashley Simms was murdered?
It would explain why no-one’s
seen her the last few days.
So then, if this is true,
that means that
whoever killed Ashley Simms
probably also murdered Darrian St Jules.
To silence him. So what we need
to start looking for now
is anyone who had
a reason to kill Ashley Simms.
Well, both Helen and Neil
Dugdale, to start with.
Ashley stole half a million
pounds from their company.
And there's someone else as well.
We've been looking at your phone records
and these, Miss Hickson,
are text messages from you
to Ashley Simms just
before she came out here.
"You'll regret ever meeting me."
"Stay away from my boyfriend, or else."
"I'm not afraid to hurt you."
The list goes on.
Care to explain?
They had a thing, all right?
Gavin and Ashley
had a thing behind my back.
Well, sort of.
Sort of?
Yeah, like, it wasn't like a real thing.
Like, they never really
got together, but
But he liked her?
Yeah.
God knows why.
She was weird.
But I think Gav liked that about her.
And he called things off between us.
That's when I started warning her off.
Guess I just got a bit carried away.
I just
I just didn't want to lose him.
And you didn't.
Now that Ashley's
conveniently disappeared,
you’ve got Gavin to yourself
now, haven't you?
What? Is that what you think?
That I killed her?
I I wouldn't. I didn't.
It'll be about Gavin.
We need to tell them what we know.
But Ashley called things off with Gav.
Why would I kill her?
Inspector?
You need to hear the truth.
What?
And I'm afraid you're not
going to get that from her.
No disrespect, Karen.
Neil, come on, man.
PHONE RINGS
What are you saying?
Whatever she's told you,
it's ten times worse.
Neil, what are you?
Whoa, whoa.
You’ve had your chance. Go on.
He had a thing for Ashley.
Is that it? We already know.
No, it was more than that.
Gavin was obsessed.
When Ashley said they couldn't
see each other any more,
he had to take time off work.
And I've seen the posters
you've been putting up.
If Ashley's gone missing,
then I'm telling you
it'll have something to do with Gavin.
Inspector!
Someone’s just broken into the villa
where Darrian was shot.
Come on!
Mr Bradbury.
This doesn't look good at all.
But then, I don't think
you need me to tell you that.
You want to start by telling us
what we're going to find
in that pool you’ve just emptied?
And we know it's not the gun
used to kill Darrian St Jules,
because that's currently
sitting in a police station
somewhere in Swindon.
So what's down there?
Why have you come back to the crime
scene, Gavin? What's so important?
Inspector! Found something.
- What is it?
- A bullet.
One that's been fired.
Why is there a bullet in the pool, Gav?
It's like
a keepsake.
Something to remember Ashley by.
A bullet?
There are other things
that I've got of hers as well, like
more likelike normal things.
No, I'm really not interested
in those, funnily enough.
Ashley, she's
She's not like anyone
I've ever met before.
Like, it was exciting being around her,
and her life was so different to mine.
Yeah, I hear that.
The bullet?
Yeah.
She has a gun.
She was looking after it
as a favour for someone
that she knew from prison, and she
Well, we went out
to the woods one day,
and she let me fire it.
It was It was amazing, right?
It was
GUNSHO
..you know exhilarating.
And I went and got one of the bullets.
You know, like, I said
that I would keep it with me
to remind me of her.
And they say romance is dead!
So why did it end up in the pool?
I panicked.
When there was that dead guy
and Neil called the police,
I was worried that if you found it
you'd think it was me that shot him,
so I took it out, and I was
wondering what to do, and
I dropped it.
Right? It fell in the pool.
And the more you were sniffing
around, the more I started
to worry that you'd find it,
so I came back and I
So you loved Ashley, then?
Yeah, I guess. Yeah.
Hmm.
Must have really hurt
when she ended things.
Gavin, we believe
Ashley Simms was murdered
on this island in the last few days.
What? No. What? She can't be.
And we're kind of wondering
if maybe you did it.
Me?!
Why would I kill Ashley?
Cos you couldn't have her,
and it hurt like hell.
No. No, no, no.
You've got this wrong.
I didn't kill her, or that man.
You seem a bit edgy, Gavin.
Is there something
you aren't telling us?
There's nothing.
Really, there is nothing.
Paradise Cove Hotel, please.
What is it that he's not saying?
Hmm.
Hey, this is Ashley's phone.
You know what to do.
Ashley, it's me.
We need to talk.
I'm worried about you.
The police have been asking
questions and I think they
they know about us, so
Just let me know what
you want me to do, yeah?
Please call me back.
I love you.
You all right, sir?
You seem a bit tense.
I just can't work this one out.
I mean, We've got
one potential murder victim
whose body we haven't found,
another murder victim
whose body we have found,
but that murder weapon
was locked in a desk drawer
on the other side of the world
when that murder took place.
I mean, where do we even start?
Well, sounds like you need to
go get a little shoulder rub.
You know?
Release some of that tension.
Nah, you're all right, Officer Rose.
PHONE BUZZES
Ah, this guy again.
Listen, mate, I told you before,
I'm not interested in upgrading
to another phone.
So stop calling me, yeah?
Is that Mervin Wilson?
Yeah, It's still Mervin Wilson
and I'm still not interested.
It's me, Solomon.
Your brother.
TYRES SCREECH
Are you there, Mervin?
Mervin?
Yes. Yes, he's here.
Don't hang up.
Er
Solomon
It's Mervin.
Yeah, you already know that.
Um
Look, mate, I'm sorry, I just
wasn't expecting your call.
Yeah, I know.
I'm sorry it's taken me so long
to get in touch, but
it was you know.
No, no, no, mate,
I totally understand. Yeah?
I mean, It's a lot to process,
right?
But, um, hey,
you're calling now, aren't you?
Yeah, man, it's a process.
But I'm glad to be calling now.
Are you still there?
Mervin?
Er, yeah. Yeah, I'm still here.
Um
Look, um, Solomon,
I'm really, really sorry
to do this to you,
and I am so glad you called
and that we're finally speaking,
and I really, really want us
to talk again, but
.. right now there's something
I need to do, yeah?
Yeah, man, no problem.
We'll talk soon.
That was quick.
Officer Rose
That billboard. You did that, right?
Yes, sir, I did.
But you should already
have the invoice for that.
It's not going to cost any extra.
No, I don't care about the cost.
It was worth every penny.
Come and look!
You see, all along
We've been looking at Ashley's
footage on phone screens
and laptops, yeah?
Well, they were too small.
I don't understand.
You see where Ashley is?
This is a still from the video she made.
And in the background
there's a ship passing by.
Now, before, that was just a speck,
but now you’ve blown it up, look at it!
What about the ship?
Well, look at what It's called!
BOTH: Blitzen.
Blitzen! Yeah?
Now we know.
Oh, Officer Rose, if you
weren’t so tall I'd kiss you!
Why would Darrian write the name
of that ship on his hand?
Well, he obviously saw
the footage himself
and then, um, he saw something in it.
But what?
Blitzen?
It's like she's vanished into thin air.
That's why I've come here.
I thought I was helping someone.
You know what?
I think I'm starting to work out
what went down here.
But I need to make a phone call,
and you need to get onto airport
security. Come on!
All right, mate.
Much appreciated.
Cheers.
Wow.
What's "wow"?
So, that ship behind Ashley Simms,
It's owned by a Scandinavian
container shipping company.
Now, we know from
the information on that footage
that Ashley recorded it on
the 4th of October, right?
- Right.
- Well, check this.
The Blitzen was passing
by the south coast of England
on the 4th of October.
Thousands of miles from the
Caribbean.
So Ashley recorded that video on a beach
back in the UK?
Which means she was never even here!
Inspector, the airport just emailed over
security camera footage the day
Ashley Simms arrived on the island.
Wait. She was here? Huh?
Thank you for a
wonderful Christmas, Marjorie.
Oh, it's been lovely.
Let me give you a hand with that.
Oh, don't be daft. You don't
know where anything goes.
Then you can tell me.
It's the least I can do.
Living room, sideboard drawer.
Living room, sideboard drawer.
Thank you.
Living room, sideboard drawer
NAOMl: But if Ashley Simms
has never been here before,
why do immigration records
show that she has?
Because someone else came,
pretending to be Ashley,
presumably on a fake passport,
and that someone paid Darrian
100K to lie and say
Ashley rented his property
for the past few months.
But why would they do that?
To misdirect and confuse
anyone looking for her.
Because they'd already killed
Ashley and taken the money?
So one of our four suspects has been
here three months previously?
Which is why we're going
through this footage,
cos it will show who was
pretending to be Ashley Simms.
There.
Why didn't I see that before?
That's why I've come here, to try
and understand why I hurt people.
No, it was more than that.
Gavin was obsessed.
Of course.
After that, nobody is seen
leaving or arriving.
So it's got to be one of these four
who shot Darrian St Jules.
You were in the hammock when
whatever happened happened.
You didn't hear the gunshot?
It's like Helen said, you know,
the rum out here, it's
Stronger than you're used to.
What if there was another smell
the killer was trying to hide?
It makes perfect sense now.
For definite,
there's no gun at the villa.
The Commissioner found a gun
locked in a desk drawer
at Dugdale’s offices back in the UK.
We need to call the Commissioner.
The Commissioner? Why?
Because he's with the killer
as we speak!

If Ashley never went, then
is she dead?
Oh, I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to.
It It just happened.
Miss Dodds
I think you should put
the knife down now.
Please.
Oh
That video she made
It wasn't in the Caribbean, was it?
Bournemouth.
On a Sunday. She'd
She'd gone to the seaside.
She realised she'd made a mistake
stealing that money, didn't she?
Then she wanted to give the money back
and send the video as an apology.
I want to say sorry.
Don't know why I keep doing this.
Miss Simms didn't leave the country.
I'd gone in to the office that day
to deal with an order
that had gone wrong.
It wasn't my fault,
but I was the one who had
to go in and fix it.
And then when I let myself in,
I found Ashley there,
and I knew I knew straight away
what the money was.
You you overhear a lot when
you sit at reception all day.
I knew it was you!
And and and I went
to call the police.
Wait, I'm giving the money back!
Marjorie, don't.
Please.
I'm calling the police now.
Don't do this to me.
You're not!
And Ashley tried to stop me.
I won't let you, Marjorie!

I pushed her off me, and

They just take me for granted, and
You saw the money and thought
finally, you could take
something back for yourself.
All you had to do
was dispose of the body.
Where?
In my back garden.
And then you made a fake
passport in Ashley's name.
Oh, that wasn't hard, you know,
with all the kit
we've got in the office.
You flew on that passport
to Saint Marie,
to make it look as if
Miss Simms had run away
to the other side of the world
and rented a property there
for the last few months.
You know, I really did want
to go to the Caribbean.
It's just that I never had the chance,
or the money, until
And if you were going to misdirect
from what really happened here
in Swindon,
where the dead body was,
then the farther away, the better,
and no-one would realise
SIREN BLARES
until things started to go wrong,
and you received a phone call.
You're saying
Marjorie killed Ashley Simms?
Our receptionist? That Marjorie?
That Marjorie.
Yes, Marjorie Dodds, the receptionist,
killed Ashley Simms in England,
and made it look as if
she ran away to the Caribbean,
with your 500K.
Oh, my
I did not see that coming.
So which one of us shot the man
found in our swimming pool?
It wasn't any of you.
But it had to be. You said so.
No-one else was here.
Yeah, you're right, I did say that.
But what I didn't know then was
that Darrian St Jules
wasn't shot at your villa.
It just looked like he was.
That's why no gunshot was heard,
because there wasn't one.
He'd already been shot.
We know now,
from our colleague in the UK,
that Marjorie had paid Darrian money.
She came to the island three months ago,
on a forged passport,
and she gave him £100,000
to lie and cover if anyone
ever came to the island
asking after Ashley.
She'd convinced him
he was doing a favour
for a very vulnerable friend of hers.
But when you visited him
a few days ago, Mrs Dugdale,
asking questions, mentioning
the missing 500 grand,
Darrian started to wonder
what he'd got himself involved in.
And when he rewatched
that footage more closely,
the footage of Ashley you'd shown him,
as an experienced fisherman
who knew the waters
off Saint Marie very well,
something about it bothered him.
Zooming in, he was able to read the
name of the boat, Blitzen.
He knew this was not
a Saint Marie vessel.
He worked out that the video of Ashley
was actually shot in the UK.
And having heard from you, Mrs Dugdale,
that Ashley went missing
with 500 grand of your money,
Darrian started to realise
that Ashley had never been
to the island.
He'd only ever met Marjorie.
So, he phoned Miss Dodds,
asking what was going on.
We need to talk.
Er, listen, Darrian,
you've got this all wrong.
All throughout this case,
we thought Darrian's killer
had to be one of you four.
The one person we never
suspected was Marjorie Dodds,
who was all the way back in Swindon.
Or so we thought.
With Darrian threatening
to go to the police,
Marjorie asked him to hang fire,
and she would fly out here
and speak to him in person.
Marjorie was here, on this island, at
the exact same time we were?
Yeah. She arrived the night
before Darrian was shot
and flew back to the UK
the next morning.
Unable to convince Darrian to keep quiet
and carry on with the lie,
Marjorie started to grow desperate,
worried he'd tell the police.
I can give you more money.
How much? Just tell me
and I'll give it to you.
We know Darrian was
searching around for a gun,
for self-protection.
I just want you to leave.
Now!
He never expected Marjorie
would use it against him.
What are you doing?
Put the gun down!
GUNSHO
After shooting Darrian, Marjorie left
and headed for the airport, before
getting back on the plane.
Arriving at Dugdale’s
offices just in time
to meet with our very own
Commissioner Patterson. Oh!
If Marjorie shot Darrian at his house,
how did he end up at our villa?
Marjorie thought she’d killed him,
but what she didn't know
when she left Darrian's place
was that he was still alive.
HE COUGHS
It was the fact
that he smelled so strongly
of someone else’s aftershave
that helped us work it out.
Neil's aftershave, in fact.
We thought it was there
to cover up another smell -
that we now know was anti septic.
The stuff you use to clean up a wound.
Because as soon
as Marjorie quit the scene,
Darrian regained consciousness
and patched himself up.
As far as he was concerned,
the bullet was just lodged
in his shoulder,
wasn't life-threatening.
So he put on a fresh T-shirt
and headed off for the hospital
to get it properly seen to.
But on the way, he passed your villa,
which was just
half a mile down the road.
And I think Darrian intended
to alert you to what had gone down.
He stopped here to
tell you the truth about Ashley
and to warn you about
what Marjorie had done.
That's why he came here that morning,
to tell you what your colleague
had done to Ashley
and, in turn, to him,
to make sure it didn't happen
to anyone else.
But what Darrian didn't know
was that his wound
was worse than he thought,
and he was bleeding internally.
And so, despite his brave
effort to alert you all
to the truth,
he died here in your villa.
But then someone
proceeded to stage the scene
as if he was shot in this villa.
Didn't you, Mr Bradbury?
Me? What? What are you talk?
No, of course not.
No.
And you did it
because Ashley told you to.
You're crazy. Ashley?
I don't know what you're talking about.
Let me have your phone.
Gavin, please.
It's OK.
Unlock it.
Bingo.
Text messages,
seemingly from Ashley Simms,
from the moment she disappeared
right up to today.
But all of these were sent
by Marjorie Dodds
who kept Ashley's phone
after she killed her.
No, no, you're wrong.
She can't be
- You've been texting her?
- No.
- This whole time?
- Karen, I'm sorry. Look
No! No! Karen!
And here - proof of what happened.
Messages exchanged on
the morning of Darrian's death.
Because despite what you told us, Gavin,
you were actually the first
to discover Darrian's body.
You knew who Darrian was,
because Ashley had told you
all about him.
And so you contacted Ashley,
left a message telling her
that Darrian had turned up
to the villa and died,
and asking her what was going on.
A few minutes later she,
or rather, Marjorie, texted back.
See, Marjorie realised that
if the police were called
and found Darrian
with his wound patched up,
they'd know he was shot somewhere else,
and the trail would lead
right back to her.
So she had to do two things.
First, she texted you with instructions.
Second, she had to clear up
the real scene of the crime.
Marjorie's confessed
to our colleague in the UK
that she quickly doubled back
from the airport
and returned to Darrian's
house, before disposing
of the gun and the T-shirt he
was wearing when she shot him.
Meanwhile, you moved the body
outside to the swimming pool.
There's also a mention here
of that bullet you kept
as a memento in the text
messages you sent to Ashley.
Well, That's how Marjorie knew.
So, as Ashley, she asked you
to remove the bullet
she killed Darrian with
and replace it with the one
she knew you had.
However, in your haste,
you must have dropped
the bullet you extracted
into the swimming pool.
But you knew you could come
back and retrieve it later.
Once you'd switched the bullets,
the hard bit was over.
You disposed of the dressing
then made a hole in his T-shirt,
and let the blood
around the wound soak in,
so now it looked like
Darrian had been shot
after he entered the villa, not before.
The last problem you had was getting
rid of that anti septic smell,
because that stuff lingers, right?
And if the police noticed it,
we’d certainly be asking who
cleaned up the wound, and why.
So you ran into the bathroom
and got hold of some
aftershave - Neil's -
and doused him in it.
So now all you had to do
was pretend to be asleep
when Mrs Dugdale discovered the body.
Gavin, we need to get to the
airport. You've got to pack!
Leaving us without a scooby
as to how a man was shot
with a gun that was locked in
a desk drawer 5,000 miles away
in a Swindon warehouse.
In the end, it wasn't just the police
that Marjorie Dodds had duped.
It was you as well, Gavin.
You see, you thought you were
helping the woman you loved,
a woman you'd do anything for,
when you were actually
helping her killer.
Officer Rose?
No.
Mr Bradbury, I'm arresting you
on the suspicion of perverting
the course of justice. You do
not need to say anything
But it may harm your defence if you
do not mention when questioned
something you later rely on in court.
Anything you do say
may be used as evidence.

So I I hired someone to find out
where she sent the email from.

OK, so what does any of this
have to do with Darrian St Jules?
The man I hired discovered that Darrian
had rented a holiday let to Ashley.
That's why I came here,
to try and get my money back.
I made sure our villa wasn't

It's not going to cost any extra.
No, I don't care about the cost.
It was worth every penny.
Come and look!
You see, all along
We've been looking at Ashley's
footage on phone screens
and laptops, yeah?
Well, they were too small.
I don't understand.
You see where Ashley is?
This is a still from the video she made.
And in the background
there's a ship passing by.
Now, before, that was just a speck,
but now you’ve blown it up, look at it!
What about the ship?
Well, look at what It's called!
BOTH: Blitzen.
Blitzen! Yeah?
Now we know.
Oh, Officer Rose, if you
weren’t so tall I'd kiss you!
Why would Darrian write the name
of that ship on his hand?
Well, he obviously saw
the footage himself
and then, um, he saw something in it.
But what?
Blitzen?
It's like she's vanished into thin air.
That's why I've come here.
I thought I was helping someone.
You know what?
I think I'm starting to work out
what went down here.
But I need to make a phone call,
and you need to get onto airport
security. Come on!
All right, mate.
Much appreciated.
Cheers.
Wow.
What's "wow"?
So, that ship behind Ashley Simms,
It's owned by a Scandinavian
container shipping company.
Now, we know from
the information on that footage
that Ashley recorded it on
the 4th of October, right?
- Right.
- Well, check this.
The Blitzen was passing
by the south coast of England
on the 4th of October.
Thousands of miles from the
Caribbean.
So Ashley recorded that video on a beach
back in the UK?
Which means she was never even here!
Inspector, the airport just emailed over
security camera footage the day
Ashley Simms arrived on the island.
Wait. She was here? Huh?
Thank you for a
wonderful Christmas, Marjorie.
Oh, it's been lovely.
Let me give you a hand with that.
Oh, don't be daft. You don't
know where anything goes.
Then you can tell me.
It's the least I can do.
Living room, sideboard drawer.
Living room, sideboard drawer.
Thank you.
Living room, sideboard drawer
NAOMl: But if Ashley Simms
has never been here before,
why do immigration records
show that she has?
Because someone else came,
pretending to be Ashley,
presumably on a fake passport,
and that someone paid Darrian
100K to lie and say
Ashley rented his property
for the past few months.
But why would they do that?
To misdirect and confuse
anyone looking for her.
Because they'd already killed
Ashley and taken the money?
So one of our four suspects has been
here three months previously?
Which is why we're going
through this footage,
cos it will show who was
pretending to be Ashley Simms.
There.
Why didn't I see that before?
That's why I've come here, to try
and understand why I hurt people.
No, it was more than that.
Gavin was obsessed.
Of course.
After that, nobody is seen
leaving or arriving.
So it's got to be one of these four
who shot Darrian St Jules.
You were in the hammock when
whatever happened happened.
You didn't hear the gunshot?
It's like Helen said, you know,
the rum out here, it's
Stronger than you're used to.
What if there was another smell
the killer was trying to hide?
It makes perfect sense now.
For definite,
there's no gun at the villa.
The Commissioner found a gun
locked in a desk drawer
at Dugdale’s offices back in the UK.
We need to call the Commissioner.
The Commissioner? Why?
Because he's with the killer
as we speak!

Come on, sir, pick up.
And what about these ones?
Same drawer!
Ah.
CLINKING
I've always wanted
to go to the Caribbean.
I said the same drawer.
Um
CLOSES DRAWER
That necklace
The stone is lithamar,
unique to Saint Marie.
You told me you always wanted
to go to the Caribbean,
like you'd never been.
You were lying.
No. No, Selwyn. I
It was you that went to Saint Marie
three months ago!
If Ashley never went, then
is she dead?
Oh, I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to.
It It just happened.
Miss Dodds
I think you should put
the knife down now.
Please.
Oh
That video she made
It wasn't in the Caribbean, was it?
Bournemouth.
On a Sunday. She'd
She'd gone to the seaside.
She realised she'd made a mistake
stealing that money, didn't she?
Then she wanted to give the money back
and send the video as an apology.
I want to say sorry.
Don't know why I keep doing this.
Miss Simms didn't leave the country.
I'd gone in to the office that day
to deal with an order
that had gone wrong.
It wasn't my fault,
but I was the one who had
to go in and fix it.
And then when I let myself in,
I found Ashley there,
and I knew I knew straight away
what the money was.
You you overhear a lot when
you sit at reception all day.
I knew it was you!
And and and I went
to call the police.
Wait, I'm giving the money back!
Marjorie, don't.
Please.
I'm calling the police now.
Don't do this to me.
You're not!
And Ashley tried to stop me.
I won't let you, Marjorie!
Get off me!
I pushed her off me, and
THUD
PHONE CLATTERS
And I wasn't even supposed
to be in that day!
It's like I told you.
Nobody nobody cares for me there!
They just take me for granted, and
You saw the money and thought
finally, you could take
something back for yourself.
All you had to do
was dispose of the body.
Where?
In my back garden.
And then you made a fake
passport in Ashley's name.
Oh, that wasn't hard, you know,
with all the kit
we've got in the office.
You flew on that passport
to Saint Marie,
to make it look as if
Miss Simms had run away
to the other side of the world
and rented a property there
for the last few months.
You know, I really did want
to go to the Caribbean.
It's just that I never had the chance,
or the money, until
And if you were going to misdirect
from what really happened here
in Swindon,
where the dead body was,
then the farther away, the better,
and no-one would realise
SIREN BLARES
until things started to go wrong,
and you received a phone call.
You're saying
Marjorie killed Ashley Simms?
Our receptionist? That Marjorie?
That Marjorie.
Yes, Marjorie Dodds, the receptionist,
killed Ashley Simms in England,
and made it look as if
she ran away to the Caribbean,
with your 500K.
Oh, my
I did not see that coming.
So which one of us shot the man
found in our swimming pool?
It wasn't any of you.
But it had to be. You said so.
No-one else was here.
Yeah, you're right, I did say that.
But what I didn't know then was
that Darrian St Jules
wasn't shot at your villa.
It just looked like he was.
That's why no gunshot was heard,
because there wasn't one.
He'd already been shot.
We know now,
from our colleague in the UK,
that Marjorie had paid Darrian money.
She came to the island three months ago,
on a forged passport,
and she gave him £100,000
to lie and cover if anyone
ever came to the island
asking after Ashley.
She'd convinced him
he was doing a favour
for a very vulnerable friend of hers.
But when you visited him
a few days ago, Mrs Dugdale,
asking questions, mentioning
the missing 500 grand,
Darrian started to wonder
what he'd got himself involved in.
And when he rewatched
that footage more closely,
the footage of Ashley you'd shown him,
as an experienced fisherman
who knew the waters
off Saint Marie very well,
something about it bothered him.
Zooming in, he was able to read the
name of the boat, Blitzen.
He knew this was not
a Saint Marie vessel.
He worked out that the video of Ashley
was actually shot in the UK.
And having heard from you, Mrs Dugdale,
that Ashley went missing
with 500 grand of your money,
Darrian started to realise
that Ashley had never been
to the island.
He'd only ever met Marjorie.
So, he phoned Miss Dodds,
asking what was going on.
We need to talk.
Er, listen, Darrian,
you've got this all wrong.
All throughout this case,
we thought Darrian's killer
had to be one of you four.
The one person we never
suspected was Marjorie Dodds,
who was all the way back in Swindon.
Or so we thought.
With Darrian threatening
to go to the police,
Marjorie asked him to hang fire,
and she would fly out here
and speak to him in person.
Marjorie was here, on this island, at
the exact same time we were?
Yeah. She arrived the night
before Darrian was shot
and flew back to the UK
the next morning.
Unable to convince Darrian to keep quiet
and carry on with the lie,
Marjorie started to grow desperate,
worried he'd tell the police.
I can give you more money.
How much? Just tell me
and I'll give it to you.
We know Darrian was
searching around for a gun,
for self-protection.
I just want you to leave.
Now!
He never expected Marjorie
would use it against him.
What are you doing?
Put the gun down!
GUNSHO
After shooting Darrian, Marjorie left
and headed for the airport, before
getting back on the plane.
Arriving at Dugdale’s
offices just in time
to meet with our very own
Commissioner Patterson. Oh!
If Marjorie shot Darrian at his house,
how did he end up at our villa?
Marjorie thought she’d killed him,
but what she didn't know
when she left Darrian's place
was that he was still alive.
HE COUGHS
It was the fact
that he smelled so strongly
of someone else’s aftershave
that helped us work it out.
Neil's aftershave, in fact.
We thought it was there
to cover up another smell -
that we now know was anti septic.
The stuff you use to clean up a wound.
Because as soon
as Marjorie quit the scene,
Darrian regained consciousness
and patched himself up.
As far as he was concerned,
the bullet was just lodged
in his shoulder,
wasn't life-threatening.
So he put on a fresh T-shirt
and headed off for the hospital
to get it properly seen to.
But on the way, he passed your villa,
which was just
half a mile down the road.
And I think Darrian intended
to alert you to what had gone down.
He stopped here to
tell you the truth about Ashley
and to warn you about
what Marjorie had done.
That's why he came here that morning,
to tell you what your colleague
had done to Ashley
and, in turn, to him,
to make sure it didn't happen
to anyone else.
But what Darrian didn't know
was that his wound
was worse than he thought,
and he was bleeding internally.
And so, despite his brave
effort to alert you all
to the truth,
he died here in your villa.
But then someone
proceeded to stage the scene
as if he was shot in this villa.
Didn't you, Mr Bradbury?
Me? What? What are you talk?
No, of course not.
No.
And you did it
because Ashley told you to.
You're crazy. Ashley?
I don't know what you're talking about.
Let me have your phone.
Gavin, please.
It's OK.
Unlock it.
Bingo.
Text messages,
seemingly from Ashley Simms,
from the moment she disappeared
right up to today.
But all of these were sent
by Marjorie Dodds
who kept Ashley's phone
after she killed her.
No, no, you're wrong.
She can't be
- You've been texting her?
- No.
- This whole time?
- Karen, I'm sorry. Look
No! No! Karen!
And here - proof of what happened.
Messages exchanged on
the morning of Darrian's death.
Because despite what you told us, Gavin,
you were actually the first
to discover Darrian's body.
You knew who Darrian was,
because Ashley had told you
all about him.
And so you contacted Ashley,
left a message telling her
that Darrian had turned up
to the villa and died,
and asking her what was going on.
A few minutes later she,
or rather, Marjorie, texted back.
See, Marjorie realised that
if the police were called
and found Darrian
with his wound patched up,
they'd know he was shot somewhere else,
and the trail would lead
right back to her.
So she had to do two things.
First, she texted you with instructions.
Second, she had to clear up
the real scene of the crime.
Marjorie's confessed
to our colleague in the UK
that she quickly doubled back
from the airport
and returned to Darrian's
house, before disposing
of the gun and the T-shirt he
was wearing when she shot him.
Meanwhile, you moved the body
outside to the swimming pool.
There's also a mention here
of that bullet you kept
as a memento in the text
messages you sent to Ashley.
Well, That's how Marjorie knew.
So, as Ashley, she asked you
to remove the bullet
she killed Darrian with
and replace it with the one
she knew you had.
However, in your haste,
you must have dropped
the bullet you extracted
into the swimming pool.
But you knew you could come
back and retrieve it later.
Once you'd switched the bullets,
the hard bit was over.
You disposed of the dressing
then made a hole in his T-shirt,
and let the blood
around the wound soak in,
so now it looked like
Darrian had been shot
after he entered the villa, not before.
The last problem you had was getting
rid of that anti septic smell,
because that stuff lingers, right?
And if the police noticed it,
we’d certainly be asking who
cleaned up the wound, and why.
So you ran into the bathroom
and got hold of some
aftershave - Neil's -
and doused him in it.
So now all you had to do
was pretend to be asleep
when Mrs Dugdale discovered the body.
Gavin, we need to get to the
airport. You've got to pack!
Leaving us without a scooby
as to how a man was shot
with a gun that was locked in
a desk drawer 5,000 miles away
in a Swindon warehouse.
In the end, it wasn't just the police
that Marjorie Dodds had duped.
It was you as well, Gavin.
You see, you thought you were
helping the woman you loved,
a woman you'd do anything for,
when you were actually
helping her killer.
Officer Rose?
No.
Mr Bradbury, I'm arresting you
on the suspicion of perverting
the course of justice. You do
not need to say anything
But it may harm your defence if you
do not mention when questioned
something you later rely on in court.
Anything you do say
may be used as evidence.
I need to know.
Why did you come to the train
station that night
and invite me into your home?
Why take that risk?
Because I didn't want to spend
Christmas on my own again.
I'm so sorry I spoiled it all.
PHONE RINGS
Inspector?
Commissioner?
The arrest has been made,
I'm pleased to say.
Same here.
We couldn't have done it
without you, sir.
- Oh, and are you doing all right?
- Me?
Yes, of course. I'm fine.
Merry Christmas, sir.
I'm doing fine.
We regret to announce
that the 10:15 to Leeds
will be delayed
due to a shortage of train staff.
Chief Commissioner,
it's Selwyn Patterson.
And to you.
And apologies for calling you
during the holidays,
but, um,
I wanted to know if you'd found
my replacement as yet.
I see.
I've been doing some thinking,
and I wondered if there was any chance
of my returning to the role
if it's still vacant.
The thing is, Harry,
the classic Christmas Day
Sunday roast lunch
is all well and good,
but when push comes to shove,
the real culinary high point
is the turkey and stuffing sarnie,
because, my friend,
in my humble opinion,
it is one of the greatest
delicacies known to mankind.
Like bacon and eggs?
Ah, DS Thomas, you're just in time.
Come in, come in.
Grab those for me, would you?
So, er, what is this about, sir?
I promised I'd make up
for spoiling Christmas Day,
and that is exactly what I'm doing.
Come on.
I don't know why
I didn't think of this before -
my front room on the beach.
Is that a good idea, do we think?
Yeah. Why not?
So we're watching something?
- We certainly are, DS Thomas.
- Not The?
The Great Escape. Yeah!
Beers and butties, everyone.
And thank you to our local mayor
for letting me have
the leftovers from the bar.
And you've put it all between
two slices of bread.
- Yeah.
- How English!
Excited for this film, Inspector.
Sounds dope.
Um sir?
Is this really your favourite
thing about Christmas?
Well, yeah.
When I was a little boy, growing up,
most times I didn't know
where I was going to end up
spending Christmas, right?
With a foster family or in a care home.
But wherever I ended up,
the one constant, every
Christmas, was this film.
And it was a
It was a comfort to me.
I bet that little boy never thought
he'd be here in the Caribbean
all these years later,
watching that same film,
surrounded by his friends.
He certainly didn't, Catherine.
So, um
- to him.
- To him.
- OK, then. Showtime.
- Yep.

Look, er, just give me
a few minutes, yeah? Yeah?
Solomon, how are you doing, man?
You got my message, yeah?
Um, look
.. I'm sorry I had to cut you off
like that before, yeah?
It was just an emergency
at work I had to deal with.
So, how's your Christmas been?
Yeah? Good.
Mine? Um
Yeah, yeah,
It's been really good.
Look, um
.. I don't know how you feel
about this, but
.. I was wondering if you
wanted to meet up some time.
Yeah?
I definitely would like to.
