Whew. Damn, that thing's cookin'.
Yeah. EV cars, man.
Batteries burn extra hot.
Yeah, we're gonna need
all the water we can get.
Looks like the high-voltage
cells underneath
are already fully compromised.
Y'all get that one-and-a-half hooked up.
- PAUL STRICKLAND: Copy that.
- This was not my fault.
- JUDD RYDER: You the pick-up?
- I'm sure I had the green light.
He just came flying
through the intersection.
Okay. Captain Vega and her team,
they're gonna take care of you.
Alright. Why don't you walk
to the ambulance with us,
take a look?
JUDD: Marwani, Strickland.
Start to tamp them flames down
so we can get the driver out.
Hey, there's no driver.
He just walked off.
There's a passenger in the
back seat. I tried to get him out.
- I couldn't get close enough.
- Hey, scratch that.
No driver, we got a victim
in the backseat, so make a path.
Chavez, get in there with hand tools.
- You're gonna pull 'em out.
- MATEO CHAVEZ: Copy that.

Alright, kill 'em.
Chavez, you're up.
(Mateo gasps)
PAUL: Damn. It's like one of
those trick birthday candles.
Hey, get them hoses back on there!
And keep 'em there!
Alright, Chavez, get him out.
(glass shatters)
MATEO: We're gonna
get you out of here, sir.
Alright, he's clear!
PAUL: We got you, buddy. We got you.
(man coughing)
(tense music playing)
TK, vitals.
TK STRAND: He's breathing
and his airways are clear,
but he's tachycardic, Cap.
Nancy, get him on O2
and then radio West Park.
- Let 'em know we're on our way.
- Copy.
Hey, kill it.
Y'all did good work.
Well, at least the fire's out.
(chuckles)
(flames roaring)
You had to say it, didn't ya?
(siren wailing)
- (moans)
- TOMMY VEGA: Sir, you with us?
You've been in an accident.
Can you open your eyes for me?
(monitor beeping)
- Concussion?
- Pupillary response is fine.
And his lungs don't sound like
they have much smoke damage.
As far as I can tell,
there-there's no head injury.
- There's no blunt-force trauma.
- TK: So what's it mean?
It means he might have been
this way before the accident.
- How?
- I
(monitor beeping)
This scar is from a dialysis shunt.
(Tommy sighs)
TK: What is that?
Nancy, radio West Park.
Tell 'em to have their
transplant unit on standby.
He needs a transplant?
Judging by these staples,
he's already had one.
I'm guessing kidney.
He's unresponsive because he's
still under anesthesia from the surgery.
- (groans weakly)
- Sir, I need you to stay still.
We're gonna get you
back to the hospital.
This time, you're gonna stay there.
(siren wailing)
Where's the trauma team?
The radio nurse
just told me to stand by.
They're still waiting for
the transplant nephrologist
- to get back from lunch.
- Oh, the hell with that.
Nancy, go into the commissary
and get that doctor yourself
- if you have to.
- NANCY GILLIAN: Copy, Cap.
On my way to ruin lunch.
(rattling)
(suspenseful music playing)
TOMMY: TK? Hey.
TK? Hey.
- (TK groans)
- TK, can you hear me?
Oh, he got me good, Cap.
- Yeah. Yeah, I can see that.
- (TK groans)
Where is he? (groans)
(sighs)
Gone.
Okay, you guys, be honest.
Is it noticeable?
(group gasps)
It's that bad, isn't it?
No, it's not.
They literally just gasped, Nancy.
You guys, will you tell him
that it's not that bad?
- Oh
- Let me take a little
Oh, no, no, that's not that bad.
- That's not bad at all.
- Yeah.
I mean, yeah, your-your face.
It looks, um
symmetrical.
- (Judd clears throat)
- Paul. Come on.
Tell me the truth.
I'm sure it'll go down by the wedding.
It's not the wedding
I'm worried about, alright?
Carlos and I are meeting my
Uncle Robert tonight for the first time.
Oh, yeah, you definitely wanna
get a good concealer then, bro.
- (sighs deeply)
- MARJAN MARWANI: Wait.
You're meeting your uncle
for the first time tonight?
Well, it's my dad's half-brother.
He met him last year
when he went to California.
You gonna be in a room full of Strands.
The odds are, you ain't gonna
be the only one with a shiner.
- (laughter)
- PAUL: True that.
No, but seriously, though,
how does a guy
who looked like a vegetable
at the accident scene
just get up and hit you
with a right cross?
DETECTIVE BRIAN McGREGOR: Renal failure?
Well, that's my best guess.
I mean, it would account
for the sudden violent behavior.
Well, in my experience,
sudden violent behavior
can be caused by a lot of things.
Renal failure is not usually
at the top of that list.
Detective McGregor, that-that patient
couldn't have been more than three hours
off of the operating table
after having a kidney transplant.
- So?
- TOMMY: So
you are required to be hospitalized
for four to six days.
Whichever hospital released him
is facing criminal negligence charges.
McGREGOR: Well, here's the thing.
No hospital anywhere
near that accident site
performed a kidney transplant on a guy
matching John Doe's description.
Are you saying that this
is an underground operation?
It would appear so.
Then you have a much
bigger problem on your hands.
You need to find him right away.
We don't have the resources
to put together a manhunt
for a half-dead patient.
Even if he managed to clunk
your paramedic on the head.
You're missing a much
bigger point here, Detective.
And what would that be, Captain?
The question isn't
where your John Doe is.
The question is,
where did he get that kidney?
(woman breathing heavily)
(panting)
(keypad beeping)
GRACE RYDER (over phone):
9-1-1. What's your emergency?
WOMAN (gasping): Okay, please help me.
I'm freezing.
I think somebody did something to me.
GRACE: What do you mean
did something to you?
(woman panting)
I don't know where I am.
Uh I
I woke up in a bathtub filled with ice.
Okay. And you're at the
Sleep Tite Inn, is that right?
WOMAN: I don't know.
I don't remember anything. I
I think he must have drugged me.
And my head's fuzzy and e-everything
is j-just numb. (sharp inhale)
Okay. What's your name, sweetie?
WOMAN (over phone): (gasping) Lexi.
Lexi.
Okay, Lexi, listen, my name is Grace.
I'm getting some help to you, okay?
But in the meantime, we gotta
get you out of that bathtub
so that you don't get hypothermia.
(gasping) Oh, okay. okay.
(groans sharply)
(panting)
(groans)
- (panting)
- (water dripping)
(labored) Okay. Okay.
(ice clatters)
(panting)
(gasps)
Oh, my God. Oh, my, God!
Oh, my, God! (gasping)
Lexi, what's going on?
(whimpers) Somebody cut me open.
I'm-I'm-I'm bleeding.
Where are you bleeding from?
There's staples, and it's leaking bad.
Lexi, are there towels around?
Yes, yeah.
I want you to grab one
and roll it up, okay?
And then lie down
or kneel up against it.
Try to put some
pressure on the wound, okay?
That should help
to slow the bleeding down.
Okay. Oh
(winces)
(labored breathing)
Okay. Okay, I'm doing it. (sharp exhale)
Okay, good.
Now, paramedics are on the way,
but we gotta figure out
what room you're in
so that they can find you.
LEXI: I don't know! I don't
(Lexi breathing heavily)
Sarah.
I need you to call the Sleep Tite Inn
and figure out
which of their rooms right now
are currently
using their landline, okay?
It can't be that many of them.
(gasps)
I'm gonna die in here, aren't I, Grace?
GRACE: No, ma'am.
Rescue 122. What's your status?
PARAMEDIC (over phone): We're on scene.
GRACE: Just start knocking on doors.
Lexi, listen, help is at the hotel,
so if you hear a knock at the door,
I want you to let me know.
Alright? Otherwise, just listen
to the sound of my voice
and keep talking to me, okay?
(weakly) Okay.
(panting)
(breathing muffled, echoes)
GRACE: Lexi, sweetie?
GRACE: Lexi?
- Lexi, can you hear me?
- (labored breathing)
Lexi, you still with me, baby?
Keep talking to me.
(gasps) Mama?
LEXI: Mama, is that you?
(somber music playing)
- (shallow breathing)
- Yeah, it's me, baby.
I'm here. You just, you
keep talking to me, okay?
I'm not cold anymore.
(panting)
I'm better now. Warm.
I'm just gonna
(sighs) close my eyes for a second.
(Lexi panting)
Uh-uh, Lexi.
Uh-uh, baby, you have to wake up. Lexi!
117. The clerk said the only
landline operating at the inn
is in room 117.
- (computer beeps)
- Rescue 122.
Your patient is in room 117.
Go, go, go. Right now.
PARAMEDIC: She's in here.
Ma'am? Ma'am, can you hear me?
No pulse.
I'm putting her on the LifePak.
Start drying her off.
GRACE: Rescue 122. I need the
patient's status when you're able.
PARAMEDIC: She's in V-tach.
Stand back. Clear.
(thuds)
Patient's unresponsive.
Shocking her again. Clear.
- Shock.
- -(defibrillator thuds)
She's back in sinus.
- Ma'am, can you hear me?
- (monitor beeping)
(weakly) Uh, yeah.
PARAMEDIC: We're gonna take care of you.
Start a line. Run it wide open.
Dispatch, patient
is awake and responsive.
- Oh, my God.
- PARAMEDIC: Please let West Park know
that we are bringing her in now.
Okay, will do. Rescue 122, thank you.
Her name's Lexi, okay?
Please take care of her.
PARAMEDIC: Copy that.
(line beeps)
So, Robert, you were saying
that this is your first time in Texas?
ROBERT STRAND:
I've been through it before.
You know, it's kinda hard to avoid
when you're traveling east
from Southern California.
Well, I wish you'd given me more notice
'cause I would have taken
more time off from work.
Well, the point was not for you
to have to take time off of work.
I'm just grateful that you were
able to find time for this.
Are you kidding me? My only brother
comes to town, I'm taking time off.
And you are gonna stay
till at least Saturday
so we can make up for lost time.
Okay.
Uncle Robert, do you have any photos
of my cousins you could show us?
Oh, yeah. No, absolutely.
Um, this is Hannah.
She is 17 and currently obsessed
with choir and musical theater.
Nice.
OWEN STRAND: Hmm.
(chuckles) And that is
That's Yvonne. (chuckles)
Sorry, it was
She is, um, about to be 15,
and she loves soccer and softball.
- Of course.
- They-they both say hello.
Well, I cannot wait to meet them
and the rest of your family.
Well, they're your family, too, now, TK.
Speaking of which (heavy sigh)
some relics from our dad.
Oh, I remember that.
- It's his Leatherman.
- Yeah.
He said you always thought
this was really cool.
Yeah, and he never let me touch it.
Well, it is all yours now.
Along with our dad's most
prized possession of all.
La Sucre 1989?
Yeah, I had to crack
into his safe to get that.
Wow. I'm surprised it didn't
come with an armed escort.
TK, I thought that you might like this.
This was your grandfather's
personal journal.
- Wait, Dad journaled?
- ROBERT: Yeah, like every night.
I mean, until his health gave out.
But, yeah, he-he journaled a lot.
Are you sure
that you don't wanna keep it?
I mean, he was your dad.
I-I never even met him.
Well, I thought this would be
a nice way for you
to get to know him
even if just a, a little bit.
TK: Alright. Well
Thank you very much, Uncle Robert.
Yeah. You are so welcome.
And, uh, Owen.
You are going to open this
bottle before I leave, right?
- OWEN: No.
- Yes. Open it.
This is going into my safe.
(monitor beeping)
GRACE: Hey, Lexi.
Um, it's Grace.
From 9-1-1.
Oh, my God, you
You came to see me?
I did, yeah.
These are for you.
Nobody ever gave me flowers before.
They're beautiful, thank you.
You're welcome.
I thought I was gonna die.
But your voice kept me alive.
(indistinct PA announcement)
Sweetheart.
The doctors say, uh,
whoever cut me open
took one of my kidneys.
Now I have a, an infection in my blood.
Do you have any family
you can call, Lexi?
Not really.
My stepfather is in Alabama,
but he's-he's part of why I ran away.
And besides, he'd just tell me
that I got what I deserved
for meeting a stranger.
Lexi, what's the last thing
that you remember
before you woke up in that motel?
LEXI: Um
I was gonna meet a date from Bash.
Mike.
We-we've been talking
for a couple of days
and, uh, he has a job
that takes him all over.
So he was here only in Austin
(deep inhale, exhale)
for a couple hours.
And he, he asked me to meet him
at a bar near the airport.
And he called me Sweet Angel.
Bash
I don't think I've ever
heard of that place.
- Where is it?
- LEXI: Oh, no.
It's not a place. It's a dating app.
Am I gonna go to jail?
Sweetheart, no.
Why would you think
you're going to jail?
Well, those officers,
they didn't believe me.
They asked me how much I got for it.
How much you got for what?
My kidney.
(ominous music playing)
NURSE: I'm sorry to interrupt.
There's a detective here
who would like to speak with Lexi.
(beeping, indistinct PA announcement)
Detective?
McGregor.
I'm Grace Ryder, uh,
from Austin Emergency Services.
I took this 9-1-1 call.
You always follow up
in person, Ms. Ryder?
Not always, but I felt like
she could use a friend.
And evidently I was right
because apparently the officers
that took her initial statement
treated her more like a suspect
instead of a victim.
It is possible to be both.
What does that mean?
Organ selling is a crime, Ms. Ryder.
Even if it's your own.
You really think she volunteered herself
to be brutalized
and left alone to die
in a cheap motel room?
McGREGOR: I think it's
likely that she made a deal
with some very shady people
and got in over her head.
Somebody lured her out.
Uh, the jet-setting "Mike"
she met online?
He doesn't exist.
We checked her online activity.
There's no history of a match
with anyone calling himself "Mike."
He could have
easily deleted his account.
She said that they met up
at a bar near the airport.
Bar she can't remember the name of.
Maybe because
she was roofied, Detective?
She was sedated, yeah.
But that's what happens when you
have your kidney removed.
It was stolen from her.
Well, we found an envelope
with $1,500 in cash
on the nightstand in her motel room.
She didn't tell you that part, did she?
Okay, so then I'll ask you, Detective,
since you are the professional
would you sell your kidney for $1,500?
I've seen runaways do a lot worse
for a lot less just to survive.
I know that's not what you wanna hear,
but all I can do is follow the evidence
wherever it takes me.
GRACE: Detective, I think maybe
you're just seeing what you wanna see.
And I think you should let the police
handle the police work and
stick to answering the phone.

Let's go see what's going on.
Gracie?
Hey, my loves.
Who's blowing up your phone
at the butt crack of dawn?
GRACE: Um, just some men.
Just some men?
I created a fake dating profile
on the same app that Lexi was using
to try and lure
the people out that hurt her.
So far, nobody's matched the description
of the guy that Lexi gave to me.
Uh, nobody's called me Sweet Angel
like they have to her.
She's gotten some "Hey, gorgeous'es"
and a few other things
I probably shouldn't mention
in front of the baby.
Or your first husband.
That, too.
(Judd sighs)
- (cell phone chiming)
- JUDD: Let's go.
Are you seriously
using your real picture?
I also used a fake name,
so it's not a big deal.
Baby, it's a big deal.
They gut that girl like a fish
and then they left her
for dead. That's a big deal.
And nobody gives a damn about it.
Do I have to remind you
that you got Charlie now?
Why would you risk doing that?
Because I have Charlie, sweetheart.
If Lexi was a cute white girl,
she would be plastered
all over the news right now.
But just like so many other
Black and Brown women,
Lexi has not only been victimized,
she has been forgotten about
and she has been blamed.
Women who look just like
Charlie will one day.
That that's why I'm doing this.
(solemn music playing)
Well, I
(exhales)
I can appreciate that.
I don't think the answer is
to use your own life as bait.
So the answer is what then, sweetheart?
When there are so many people
in this system who don't care.
Find the people who do.
She's got a lot on her plate.
She does.
And believe me when I tell you
she gives a damn about all of 'em.
Which is why sometimes she can
come off a little prickly.
And scowly.
Okay. She sounds terrifying.
She kind of is.
(door shuts)
Mrs. Ryder.
- Sarina Washington.
- Oh, yeah.
Thank you, um, for agreeing to
see me, Detective Washington.
Sarina works just fine.
Officer Reyes tells me
that you wanna discuss a case?
I'm actually here about Lexi Briggs.
I, uh, spoke to your colleague
first, Detective McGregor.
And he seems convinced that
Lexi sold her own body part
and now he's considering
charging her with a crime.
It does happen, Mrs. Ryder.
GRACE: But I don't think that
was the case here, Detective.
Lexi was a victim,
and she wasn't the only one.
These are all 9-1-1 transcripts
and police reports
of similar attacks
in the last two years.
All the victims are women
of color, just like Lexi,
who were lured in by a dating app.
Drugged, operated on,
only to be ignored.
Just like Lexi.
These are all from out of state.
GRACE: That's because
whoever's doing this,
I don't think they're staying
in one place for too long.
You are aware that
my beat is missing persons.
Lexi Briggs isn't missing.
No, but her kidney is.
I don't generally locate folks
piece by piece, Officer Reyes.
GRACE: How about the man
who's currently in possession
of said kidney?
I'm listening.
CARLOS: Yesterday, a car that was stolen
out of New Orleans was involved
in a hit-and-run on Alvarado.
The driver abandoned it, fled the scene,
but he's still at large,
but there was a passenger.
The passenger was rescued
by first responders.
Then he assaulted a paramedic
and also fled.
Also still at large.
And the paramedic captain
who treated him,
she believed that she saw signs
of a recent transplant surgery.
So he'd have a reason to run,
if he could run.
I can't imagine he got very far,
not without some help.
I must say, you do make
a very compelling case.
So I'm sorry, Detective.
You believe us?
Why wouldn't I?
(Carlos chuckles)
You said she was terrifying.
I did not say that. I didn't say that.
I personally think that
we should start searching
on the national transplant waitlist,
because I think he was
on it at some point.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy. (chuckles)
Mrs. Ryder, I said I believe you.
I did not say I could help you.
Why the hell not?
SARINA WASHINGTON: It's not my case.
You have to talk
to the detective in charge.
(sighs)
(scoffs)
Well (clears throat)
Looks like you got
the whole thing figured out.
I don't know why I bother.
Never said that.
Brian, nobody is questioning your work.
- Really?
- SARINA: Or your commitment.
But there does seem to be a pattern here
that could use a harder look.
Fine.
You want this crap sandwich, Sarina?
You don't just take a bite,
you get the whole thing.
(Sarina scoffs)
Knock yourselves out.
I got enough on my plate anyway.
SARINA: Alright.
And I'll assume that you won't be
bringing any charges
against Lexi Briggs.
At least until I can go
through all of this.
McGREGOR: (sighs) Well,
you don't gotta worry about that.
I never bring charges
against a dead person.
What?
Yeah. Lexi Briggs died in the hospital
(exhales)
JUDD (over phone): I'm so sorry.
They haven't even
been able to (sharp inhale)
to get a hold of her stepdad
to notify him.
Wow, that's terrible.
GRACE (over phone): You
should have seen her at the hospital.
She was very scared.
And she was by herself.
- (sniffles)
- JUDD: Gracie.
You sound weary, honey.
GRACE: I am. I am.
I am weary, Judd. I'm weary to my soul.
JUDD: Well, I'll tell you what.
I'm taking the rest of the shift off
and I'm gonna come pick you up.
No, it's okay.
You don't have to do that.
I can't leave yet.
Not when we have so much
work to do. Not when
the monsters who hurt her
are still out there.
I just
I can't leave.
JUDD: Alright, well,
I reckon you best go get
those sons of bitches then, huh?
Yeah, I reckon so. (sniffles)
I love you.
You promise to take care of yourself.
I love you, too. Thank you.
SARINA: We've been combing
through the transplant waitlist
and wanted to see if anyone looked like
your fugitive kidney patient.
Can you guys see these okay?
Yeah, babe, we-we can see everything.
It's just none of those are the guy.
- How about this?
- TOMMY (over phone): No.
No, keep going.
TK (over phone): No.
TOMMY: No, not them.
Wait, wait, wait. Grace, can
you go back to that last guy?
Mm-hmm. Him?
Yeah.
(knock on door)
Uh, can I help you?
Mrs. Harris, Detective
Washington, Austin PD.
We'd like to have a few words
with your husband, Clint.
Uh, Clint's on a business
trip to Albuquerque
for the rest of the week.
Can I ask what this is about?
I'm pretty sure you know
what this is about.
Your husband was involved
in a car accident yesterday.
He assaulted a paramedic
while fleeing the incident.
We also believe he recently received
a kidney off the black market.
Like I said, he's not here,
so you'll have to come back
another time.
Captain Vega,
would you please explain
what would happen to her husband
if he doesn't receive
immediate medical attention?
Given his condition, I'd say the
kidney wasn't a proper match,
which means his body is rejecting it.
Soon he'll go into sepsis,
if he hasn't already.
After that, total organ failure,
and then he dies.
(gasps)
Back den. To your left. Please help him.
(Clint groaning)
TK, LifePak. Nancy, get his temperature.
Yeah, Cap.
He's burning up, Cap.
His temperature's 103.
His BP is 180 over 110.
It must be septic shock.
Alright, radio West Park,
tell 'em that they better
have everybody standing by.
Alright, let's go.
We gotta move him now.
- Any updates on Harris?
- Still in surgery.
Um how many sugars
did you put in here?
Two and a half packets, plus a Stevia.
- Too much?
- No, it's perfect.
How did you know exactly
how I take my coffee?
Saw you make it back at the station.
So you were observing me?
Observing makes it sound creepy.
It is a little creepy, but you have
a detective's eye, Officer Reyes.
Thank you.
You know, I recall sitting
in this very same hospital
on another case encouraging
you to take the detective's exam.
I thought about it.
So why didn't you see it through?
Because I became a police officer
to help my community.
I'd rather be on patrol
trying to prevent problems
than just picking up the pieces
after the damage is done.
Hmm. I can respect that.
But not every evil can be
spotted from a patrol car.
Sometimes you gotta
follow 'em down a snake hole.
Especially when you have a gift for it.
Damn, girl.
It feels like there's
steel cables in there.
Yeah, it's It's been a week.
Hmm. I'll say.
Well, the worst part's behind you now
and you can exhale.
- Which you still ain't done.
- GRACE: Mm-mm.
I can't help but feel like
this job is half done.
Babe, what are you talking about?
You helped catch the guy that
stole that little girl's kidney.
No, he didn't steal her kidney.
He had it, but he wasn't the one
that-that lured her out or cut her open.
Okay, no. No, but when he wakes up,
he's gonna lead us to the ones who did.
If he wakes up.
Grace, look at me.
You did your bit.
Well, I appreciate you saying so.
And I appreciate you guys
lettin' me stop by.
I should probably go ahead and
take Charlie off Mom and Dad's hands.
Why don't you just
leave her there tonight?
What? No, I can't do that
to them with no notice.
You don't do it to 'em. They
love having their grandbaby over.
You know, you need to go home.
You need to rest.
You need to put your feet up,
play some video games.
It ain't healthy to walk around
with that much tension
in your shoulders like that.
Ain't that right?
Oh, as a medical professional?
- JUDD: Uh-huh.
- Yes, I must insist.
(sighs) Well, you know, a quiet night
does sound pretty nice.
Mr. Harris, I'm Detective Washington.
This is Officer Reyes.
We know you didn't receive
that kidney through legitimate channels.
We need the names of the individuals
