A Million Little Things (2018) s04e08 Episode Script

The Things We Keep Inside

1 Maggie, this is serious.
You have a stalker.
Previously on "A Million Little Things" I'm I'm Eddie.
I'm Anna.
How do you know Sophie? I'm Anna Benoit.
Peter's wife.
I'm trying to move on, but Peter's taking even that away from me.
I'm ready for my audition.
Paragon Plus is giving you your movie back.
Really? Look at that.
We were supposed to meet.
Hi.
It just felt like I'd been away long enough.
Is that okay? I don't think we can do this.
Can we talk to you about something? And suddenly the woman you thought you were gonna spend the rest of your life with is having another baby with a man who spells "Stephen" with a P-H! I think I know who's been sending me these letters.
He died three years ago.
Make any sense of it yet? It looks like a bunch of pages that were torn out of Justin's journals.
I put some of them in order, but there are just still these huge gaps.
As far as I can tell, they were all written right after he stopped coming to see me.
He was so talented.
I mean, this looks just like you.
Yeah, he was a student at the Art Institute.
One of my first clients, right out of grad school.
What happened to him? I'm sorry.
You You don't have to talk about it.
No, it's okay.
Um He was going through some really hard stuff and eventually, he started having feelings for me.
We're trained to deal with that kind of thing, but when I tried to talk to him about it, he just stopped showing up for his appointments.
I reached out to him, but I never heard back.
And a few months later, I found out that he had taken his life.
I'm so sorry.
But if he's gone, who's sending you these? Whoever's got his journal.
They're obviously still grieving and need help.
I feel terrible for them.
You feel bad for the stalker who's tormenting you, which makes you officially the best person I've ever met.
Tell that to the small but very vocal group of Bruins fans who think it's my fault you lost last night.
Well, you did steal my energy before the game.
- Hmm.
- But we need more data, which is why, in the name of science, I suggest that we rerun the experiment before my flight to New York tonight.
Oh, well, if it's in the name of science.
You're a doctor.
It seems like you have an obligation.
Mm-hmm.
Can't wait.
Oh, and I am late.
Uh, I'm gonna stop by that poké place that we like on my way home.
So just text me what you want.
Alright, love ya.
Please note, I said "love ya," not "love you.
" Which everybody knows - are completely different things.
- Totally.
Not that I don't love you, 'cause I do love you.
I mean, like I love all humanity.
Uh, I think what I meant to say was peace! Peace ya.
Good morning, sunshine.
Ah, you're up early.
Would you like some coffee? Nah, I am fueled by the righteous pursuit of self-improvement.
Dr.
Jessica says time to let go of all things me and Darcy, so I am cleaning out what I have left.
Where are you off to so early? Sophie's audition for MMI is today.
Oh, that's great.
Yeah.
She wants me to give her notes on her new song, and then Regina and I are going with her in the afternoon.
So she only invited the people who haven't massively failed her.
That makes sense.
I'm pretty sure a year ago, I'd be persona non grata, too.
And I have the smashed guitars to prove it.
She'll forgive you.
It just takes time.
Yeah.
And Dr.
Jessica said I have to let go of the things I can't control and try to forgive myself.
She also said that I have to stop being the person that starts every sentence with "Dr.
Jessica said.
" Well, it sounds like you're making progress.
Dr.
Jessica said I am.
Alright, man.
See you later.
Wish her luck for me, silently, so that hearing my name does not throw her off her game.
Will do.
Hey.
Oh, babe, I have morning breath.
I missed your morning breath.
Okay, but I gotta get up.
That's what I'm trying to do.
But I really have to go.
It's been six months since we've been in our own bed together, and last night we were so tired.
Mm-hmm.
Oh, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Yeah, you know what? I should I should get that.
That's Cassandra.
She's probably calling about our pitch to PBS today.
Hey, there.
No, no.
It's perfect timing.
I just gotta figure out what I'm wearing to this meeting.
Soph it's incredible.
It's good, right? I'm just a little worried about auditioning with it.
Might be a little edgy for MMI.
All of the best art comes from channeling your most powerful emotions, like Alanis.
She's the queen of that.
Well, I got my inspiration from what Anna said.
Thinking about Peter and everything he took from both of us, it just clicked.
Well, I'm just glad something good came out of that night.
Yeah, that must have been a pretty terrible first date.
Are you gonna see her again? No, definitely not.
We both agree it's too complicated.
When has that ever stopped you? Alright.
I deserved that.
But if my relationship with your mom taught me anything, it's that if it starts messy, it stays messy.
That's catchy.
Maybe I'll use that for my next hook.
Well, clearly my work here is done.
Ed, I don't know what's going on, but if I need to close my eyes and leave the apartment immediately, just say the word.
Liam.
Hey, you found your hat! Yeah.
What are you doing here, pal? Following your lead.
Lenox sucks, so just gonna live here with you now.
Hey, can I make you a sandwich? Dr.
Jessica is not gonna like this.
Hey, it's Darcy.
Leave a message.
Hey, Darce.
I don't know how to say this without sounding like a kidnapper, but, uh I have your son.
Oh, no, no, no.
You're right.
You're right.
The blue vest looked sharp.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'll see you there.
How's Cassandra? Oh, she's good.
Just giving me some notes on our pitch.
She really knows her stuff.
Apparently.
And she seems to know what you look good in, too.
What's that supposed to mean? Nothing, just picking up on a vibe, that's all.
- A vibe? - Yeah.
I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if she had a little crush on you.
I mean, who can blame her? I have a crush on you, too.
Are you for real? You know, thanks to Cassandra, my film's getting a second life.
No, it It totally should.
I'm just pointing out your energy when you talk to her on the phone, that's all.
Okay, so so what what are you really saying, Gina? D-D-Do you not trust me? Of course I trust you.
Look, I'm glad she's helping you.
I just Cassandra believes in my film, so she's using her connections to get it back out there again, but if you want me to stop working with her, say that.
No, of course not.
I Look, just forget I even brought it up, okay? Great.
Already forgotten.
What the You know the last time I played this game was with you? I'm still kicking your butt.
- Score! - Goaaaaalllll! Again.
Alright, let's rematch? Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hold up.
Hold up.
Hold up.
Talk to me.
What's going on? Why are you really here? I already told you.
I hate Lenox.
It's in the middle of nowhere.
There's nothing to do.
And I just feel like I'm always in the way, so I just took my skateboard and left.
What do you mean, you You feel like you're in the way? It's just everything's about the baby now.
Ah.
Huh.
Well, sure, sure.
But aren't you excited about being a big brother? I thought I was, but in the past couple days, I feel like they'd be better off without me, so I thought maybe I could come stay with you, instead.
That's your mom.
Wait, wait.
You called my mom? - I had to, pal.
- No, no.
She She can't be here.
She can and she is.
You're not Darcy.
And you're not Liam.
I'm Gary.
I'm Stephen.
I'm all caught up.
Thanks so much for calling us.
Come on, Liam! Darcy didn't tell me you were coming.
Or that, apparently, she has a beard fetish.
Now I'm questioning everything.
I can't believe you called my dad! You're such a traitor! Come on, pal.
Leave me alone! Liam! Kids.
Am I right? Okay, just tell me, was Cam in a good mood this morning? Did he get a full 8 hours of sleep? Do you think he can cover the spread? 'Cause if I don't win back the 1,000 bucks I lost last game, my wife's gonna kill me.
What I'm hearing is that you express your passion for the Bruins through an unhealthy gambling habit.
It's only unhealthy if I lose! Am I gonna lose? Stay on the line, Dale, and I will have Claudia share some helpful resources with you.
Meredith from Albany, having problems at work.
Hello, Meredith from Albany.
You are in the room.
Dr.
Bloom? Yes.
I hear you're having some problems at work.
Yeah, that's what I told your screener, but the real reason I'm calling is because I want every one of your listeners to know what you did to Justin.
You are a fraud, Maggie Bloom.
You're up here every day talking to the masses like you're some kind of savior when everyone should know the truth That because of you, my son is dead.
I know you've been trying to get in touch.
I received your mail.
I wanted you to see what you did to my son.
Maggie, we should cut this off.
I understand that you are in pain, Meredith.
Don't you dare tell me about pain.
I have to sit here every day and listen to you pretend to care about anyone besides yourself, the way you pretended to care about Justin.
Maggie, she's attacking you.
Drop the call.
Tell you what.
Why don't I go to commercial, and you and I can talk about this privately? Why? So your audience can't hear the truth? If you go to commercial, I'll hang up.
Alright.
I understand.
Let's, uh Let's talk here.
It's clear that you're very angry with me, and I can only imagine how much you're hurting.
Maggie, commercial, now.
And I know it may be hard to believe, but I really do want to help.
Just stop.
Stop pretending like you're so professional.
I'm the one who found him.
I knew something wasn't right.
A mother just knows.
So I went to see him.
Do you have any idea what it's like to lose a child like that? No, I don't.
Of course you don't.
Well, I think about it every single Meredith? Did you get her callback number? Take your next call.
Meredith, you got cut off.
Please call me back.
Philip in Danvers, you are in the room.
Yeah, hi.
Longtime listener, first time caller.
I was gonna get some advice about my relationship with my ex, but I gotta ask, was that last woman telling the truth about you and her son? Okay, I cannot find my screwdriver, but it appears I have all the components you need to build a time machine, so maybe we just do that instead? How do you lose a screwdriver? How do you lose your son? I'm sorry.
No, I probably deserve it.
Things have been really tough lately, and you're not exactly helping.
Whoa.
What I mean is, it's been tough, living in the shadow of Gary Mendez.
All Liam talks about is how good you are at street hockey, how fast you can eat a Philly cheesesteak, the voices you do during D&D.
I just don't get it.
He's gotta be the only kid in the world who's upset that his mom and dad managed to work things out.
What am I doing having another kid? I can't even take care of the family that I have.
M-My wife's on bed rest and my son hates me so much that he took a bus two hours to get away.
Darce is on bed rest? W Is everything okay? She was reorganizing the laundry room the other night when she tripped and fell.
Oh, my God.
I rushed her to the hospital.
Thankfully, she and the baby are okay, but the doctor says that she has to be off her feet for the rest of the pregnancy.
How long ago did this happen? A couple days.
Why? I think I might know what's going on with Liam.
Who's that? Oh, it's Morgan from the open mic.
Her bass guitarist and drummer are in some huge fight, and they're taking bets on who's gonna cave first.
Well, if there's one thing that's true regardless of genre, it is always the drummer's fault.
Hi.
Gina! Hi! Thank you for being here.
Of course.
I wouldn't miss it.
- Hey.
- Hi.
Hey.
What is it? It's just, uh last time I was in this building was the day I met Peter.
Oh, honey.
Yeah, that must be really intense.
Yeah.
It's also the day that Gary went off on him.
Just one in a long line of many massive Mendez mistakes.
Actually, that's a good vocal warm-up Many massive Mendez mistakes.
Many massive Mendez mistakes.
Look, I know this really isn't the time, but I just gotta say If someone hurt Theo or Charlie the way Peter hurt you, I probably would have done the same thing Gary did.
And if your dad were here, he would have, too.
Gary took my voice away.
My dad never would have done that.
Can you give us a minute? Sure.
I will go get you some water.
It's good for your vocal chords.
Hey.
I want you to acknowledge how strong you are, and no matter what the people in that room say or don't say, to come back here, to be willing to take this chance after everything that happened, I hope you are as proud of yourself as I am of you.
Sophie Dixon? Now, go take your voice back.
You hit all the right notes.
It just lacked passion.
Music's obviously a wonderful hobby for you and and I encourage you to continue it.
Uh, excuse me.
Is Dr.
Reeves here? Oh, no.
I'm afraid she's not.
But, uh But she was the one who told me to come back and audition.
I see.
Well, she just left us for a position at Berklee.
Oh.
So, what song will you be playing for us today? Can you please tell me and the other judges what your piece is about? It's No, Miss Dixon.
What is your song about? It's a song I wrote about the man who assaulted me.
Did I let me down? Let you get away From what I had to say Played me like the pieces Running everything A puppet on a string I let you in Dancing with a monster You love to make a mess Take till there's nothing left I am the best part The blue in the fire The brilliant sunrise That burns up a liar And everything after Is feeding the flames You're the disaster And I am the best part I haven't been this nervous since my fourth grade piano recital.
Peed right through my pants.
Corduroy's even louder when it's wet.
It's a good thing she's not in corduroy.
I'm sure she's crushing it, and a lot of that is thanks to you.
After everything with Delilah, I never thought she and I would get back to such a good place.
Can I ask you something? When you and Delilah h-happened, was it because you were attracted to her, or because something was off between you and Katherine? Honestly? Both.
Katherine used to do this thing every day before she left for work where she'd sit on the bed and kiss me goodbye.
Didn't matter if I was completely sleeping, it was 4:00 in the morning, she'd always do it.
Until one day, after a, uh particularly bad fight that was totally my fault, I woke up to the sound of the door closing behind her.
First time, no kiss.
And the next day, same thing.
They just stopped.
And the thing that really scared me was pretty soon, I didn't miss it.
That's when I knew.
Why do you ask? Hmm.
It's just, um Rome and I are having a little trouble getting back in sync, and I can't help but wonder if I was gone too long.
Uh, Gina, I'll just say, when that happened with me and Katherine, we were nowhere near as solid as you guys.
But maybe you should do what I didn't Talk to him about it.
There she is.
Well? Those bastards.
No, I-I got in.
Those beautiful bastards! Congrats! We knew you'd crush it! Thank you.
Where are we gonna celebrate? I know a great Italian place Deep-dish pizza, unlimited garlic knots.
Sounds like you already know where we're celebrating.
You're right.
Rock star's choice.
No, no, no.
Pizza sounds great.
But can we actually do it later tonight? There's somebody I want to tell I got in.
Your mom.
Okay, two people, and do not tell my mom I didn't think of her first.
Our lips, sealed.
Okay.
But just think, next time you visit campus, it's going to be as a student.
You're going to MMI! Yeah, she is.
Rome and Cassandra, this was wonderful.
I'll have our business affairs folks reach out.
Thank you.
You know, I think PBS is the perfect fit.
Couldn't agree more.
Thank you.
We'll be in touch.
Bye.
You were amazing.
Thank you, but this wouldn't even be possible if it weren't for you.
Mm.
We make a good team.
We gotta celebrate.
As my grandma always says, life will give you a lot of lows, but when you hit a high, enjoy it.
Well, I ain't about to argue with Grandma.
Then champagne it is.
Okay, great.
Let's get the cheap stuff, okay? This is public broadcasting money.
Unless Big Bird's footing the bill.
Go away! Liam, it's me.
Can you please open up? I told you, I'm not going anywhere.
And you don't have to.
I-I just want to talk to you for a minute.
It's about your mom's fall.
Hey.
Listen, pal.
You understand that when Mom fell, no matter what happened, it wasn't your fault? If I hadn't left my skateboard in the laundry room It was an accident.
She could have tripped on anything.
I mean, her belly's so big, she can't even see her feet.
But you don't tell her I said that.
I really need you at home to help me take care of Mom and, pretty soon, your baby sister.
She's gonna love you.
And I love you, too.
So what do you say? Should we head back home? Yeah.
What were you thinking? You know the rules.
If someone calls in with a personal attack, you dump the call.
End of story.
I really thought that I could help her.
I mean, she's clearly in a desperate place and she's confused.
Is she? What are you asking me? Is there any truth to what she said? No, of course not.
Well, unfortunately, that is not what our audience heard.
We cannot have them questioning your credibility.
You're right.
Yeah.
I will I'll address it at the top of my show tomorrow.
No.
You're gonna take the rest of the week off till things calm down.
Wait, you're pulling me off the air? We have plenty of pre-records ready to go.
Use this time off to think about what really matters Trying to help the one person who doesn't want it, or keeping what you have built here.
You can't have both.
Hey, Anna.
Sophie, hey.
Um, what are you What are you doing here? I came 'cause I wanted to tell you that I was just accepted to MMI.
That's amazing.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Actually, the song that got me in was inspired by our talk the other night.
I would I would really love to hear it.
I'd like that.
Oh.
I'm so excited for you.
Getting into MMI, it was it was pretty much the happiest moment of my life.
I didn't know you went there.
Yeah, for for violin.
Well, do you still play? No.
Um Someone convinced me that I wasn't good enough, and I was naive enough to believe him.
Do me a favor? Promise me that you will always bet on yourself, because you are good enough.
I will.
Thank you.
I'll let you get back to work.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Hey, what are you doing tonight? So then she just cuts me off and sends me straight to commercial.
And then Jane told me to take a week off.
Oh, you got put in the penalty box.
Now I understand why there's so much fighting in hockey.
Well, hey, if you got the week off, you should come with me on this road trip.
It'll be fun.
Hotel bathrobes, hotel room service, hotel sex.
Mm, I'd love to, but I can't.
Aw, why not? I mean, it beats sitting home all week in detention.
Mm.
But you're not sitting at home, are you? I Googled her and I found out where she lives in Albany.
Maggie Yeah, I know what you're gonna say, but I just really need to talk to her face-to-face.
I know I can help her.
Well, I want to go with you.
You can't.
You've played 496 straight games.
497, but who's counting? Oh, everyone in Boston.
You can't break that streak because of me.
I'm already in enough trouble with my own fan base.
I don't suppose you wanna take Bulldog? She's not dangerous.
She's just hurting.
You don't know this woman.
Okay, just promise me, if she doesn't want to talk to you, you'll let it go.
Okay.
I will.
Good.
'Cause I love ya.
Oh, my God.
I said "love.
" I-I should start rambling nonsense and awkwardly back out the door like this.
This is how you do it, right? Peace to all of humanity.
Very funny.
There's just one difference.
You know, when I said "love ya" just then, I didn't say it in some universal, all-of-humanity way.
I said it in a very, very personal way.
Like this I love you.
I love you, too.
Thank you.
You figured out what was going on with him in like two seconds.
I used to read "Encyclopedia Brown" when I was a kid, and the map for World War I was labeled "World War I.
" How'd they know there was gonna be a second world war? And you're funny, and you helped Darcy with her PTSD, and you were willing to move to Lenox.
Why'd you two break up, anyway? She didn't tell you, huh? No.
Well, the truth is, she realized she wanted to give you two another shot.
Sometimes two people are just meant to be together, and no matter what you do, the universe finds a way to make it happen.
You know what? Um, I'm gonna use the bathroom.
If you lock yourself in there, I'm gonna tear the door off the hinges.
With what screwdriver? Hey, uh, Gary, can I can I ask you something? Did Did you miss me at all? What? I mean, I know you and my mom broke up, but I didn't know that meant we couldn't be friends anymore.
Dude not a day has gone by that I haven't missed you.
And just so you know, I needed today just as badly as you did.
Probably even more.
I'm so happy you came to visit me, because there's something very special that I want to give you.
Wherever you go, whether we're together or not, when you wear this, I'm with you.
But that's your lucky hat.
Are you sure you want me to have it? I'm positive.
And now it is your lucky hat.
Are you sure this is okay? It's more than okay.
You ready, pal? Yep.
Sure is.
Time to hit the road.
You fellas drive safe.
Bye, Gary.
Goodbye, Liam.
You missed her by 20 minutes.
She was putting Charlie down for like the fourth time, and then she finally crashed, too.
Well, I'm glad you're up.
You're lucky Milo and I are binge-watching "My So-Called Life.
" Wait, isn't he here? Unfortunately, yes, which is why we just get on a video chat, sync up our computers, and then press "play" at the exact same time.
For a few minutes, it doesn't feel like we're an ocean apart.
So, um, what is the big news? I got into MMI.
Of course you got in! Congratulations! When do you start? Yeah, that's actually my question, too.
I don't know.
I just don't feel like I thought I would.
I've spent the last year trying to prove that I could get into my dream school, and now that I did, just realizing maybe it's not my dream anymore.
Okay.
But if that's not your dream, then what is? To the first of many collaborations.
You know you have to drink it for the toast to work, right? Everything okay? Yeah, yeah.
I just It's a lot to take in.
You brought my film back from the dead.
That was all you.
I'm just happy to be riding your coattails.
What are we celebrating tonight? Anniversary? No, no.
We're just We're just friends.
Colleagues, actually.
Um, just colleagues and just friends.
Glad Gina wasn't here to hear him say that.
What do you mean? Oh, it's nothing.
A-Actually Actually, it's pretty funny.
Gina's got this crazy idea that you've got a little crush on me.
Well, I wasn't gonna say anything, because, you know, you're married, but it's not crazy.
What? I'm attracted to you, and I kind of assumed it was mutual.
And look, if I have the wrong idea and you are happily married, nothing is happening between us.
But I don't know.
I just kind of get the impression that maybe you're not that happy.
What's the matter? Are you gonna throw up? God, every time I say something nice to you, you throw up.
It's okay.
I'm not throwing up.
You're in? I'm in.
Hey, Bloom.
I was just thinking about you.
What's going on in your world? Hey, sir, do you happen to drive a minivan? Because they're about to tow it for for being so cool.
What are you doing here? Sophie stopped by the music store to tell me she got into MMI and invited me to crash the celebration.
Where is she? Oh, she must be Wow, running very late.
Oh, she's good.
What do you mean? I think we just got "Parent Trap"-ed.
- Oh.
- Yeah.
W-Well, lucky for you, I always had a big crush on Dennis Quaid.
Who didn't? Right? But this is still It's pretty complicated, right? Maybe it doesn't have to be.
I'm Eddie.
I'm Anna.
Well, it's nice to finally meet you.
Thanks again for letting me audition.
Of course.
I'm sorry you didn't get into MMI.
They're idiots not to want you.
Well, actually, I did get in, but I'm not going.
Really? Really.
'Cause there's something else I want more.
This.
Which is why I'm here, betting on myself.
Well, I'm all for that.
Let's see what you got.
Gina, I We need to talk.
What happened? Did they not buy the movie? Oh, no, no.
They did.
Then what's going on? I'm so sorry.
Did something happen with Cassandra? No.
Nothing happened between us.
But you were right.
She She did have feelings for me, and she thought I did, too.
And I know why, because I've been Rome.
Talk to me.
I sold my movie today.
Felt nothing.
When you came home, I felt nothing.
I've been faking it for everybody, trying to make it seem like I'm great.
But I can't fake it with you.
My depression It's back.
Come here.
Come here.
So you're driving to Albany to meet your stalker? Seems like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Yeah.
If she stabs you, just don't bleed on my leather seats.
I will be sure to bleed politely.
Keys.
- Thank you.
- Gas tank's on On the side the arrow is pointing at.
I know.
The A/C should only be run on Recirculation.
Unless you have dairy without your Lactaid, in which case, just crack a window.
And remember, premium unleaded only.
Oh, my God, Gary.
If you're so worried that I'm gonna destroy your car, you might as well just drive me there yourself.
Well, maybe I will.
I mean, if you want to.
I'm in.
Alright.
