Come on, don't fuck

Surveillance footage has
your predecessor, Sue Herlitz,
approaching Nell McKenna's
home around three weeks ago.
And a few days ago, Nell McKenna
hanged herself in her prison cell.
In case you haven't heard.
Something's clearly a little off here.
Look, I'm just as confused
about this as everyone else.
Does anyone from her
staff still work here?
No.
The last one standing
was her former assistant
but I let her go weeks ago.
I believe Ramona was her name.
Does Ramona have a last name?
Putz or Paul maybe Potts.
I'm sure you can understand I
wasn't too keen on having anyone
from the past regime on my watch.
Do you have any idea
where this Ramona went?
What her plans might've been?
I'm afraid I don't.
Not too keen on the concept
of the exit interview?
I'm told you weren't
too keen on that either.
I understand when you skipped town
it was practically on horseback.
Thanks for your time.

I hope you're okay. Um
Just, uh, just call me.
[FATHER PAUL] Everything okay?
Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine.
Sorry, I don't mean to be nosy.
No, not at all.
My girlfriend was supposed to
meet me at the bus this morning
and she didn't show up.
Oh, sorry to hear that.
Where are you heading?
First Atlanta, and then
another bus to Fort Benning.
Mm, famous military base.
You visiting someone?
I'm joining the Army. I'm
about to start boot camp.
Congratulations.
Thanks.
What about you? Where are you heading?
I'm actually on my way
to Jarratt, Virginia.
I get off the bus in Roanoke.
My name's Paul, by the way.
Billy.
Nice to meet you, Billy.
Nice to meet you.
What's in Virginia?
A friend of mine has been incarcerated
for a number of years and in a few days
he's scheduled to be executed at
Greensville Correctional Center.
Holy shit!
I'm sorry, I meant to say
Man, that's, uh, intense.
He reached out to me a few months ago
after his final appeal was rejected.
So, this feels like a
pretty important trip.
What'd he do?
In 1998, he murdered a young couple
and their three kids
while they were camping.
His name is Angus Braden Moon.
Angus was one of my
closest friends growing up.
So, you're going there to, to
what, just to hang out with him?
Well, that's certainly
one of the reasons.
I don't think many people
will be there on his behalf.
His parents have written
him off. He never married,
has no real family to speak of, so
he asked me if I would read him
his last rites and I said I would.
That's pretty cool of you.
During our correspondence,
he became more and more interested
in the idea of forgiveness.
How old were those kids that he killed?
Uh, they were seven, nine and
eleven. Two boys and a girl.
Are you okay with what he did?
Not at all, no.
But I think everyone is
deserving of God's mercy.
Especially those who
are genuinely seeking it.
Even a murderer?
Yes, even a murderer.

Although, clerics of many other
Christian faiths wear the collar.
Are you religious?
No.
My mom's side of the
family's technically Catholic
but we never go to church.
What about your dad?
[SCOFFS] The only thing my dad
believes in is money and cigarettes.
And the feeling he gets from having
whatever young girl he's got on his arm.
And revenge, too. Yeah,
he's pretty big on revenge.
I didn't realize revenge
was a spiritual belief.
Yeah, I guess revenge is just
revenge. An eye for an eye.
What comes around goes around.
Isn't that in the Bible?
It's actually a commandment
in the Book of Exodus.
Eye for eye, tooth for tooth,
hand for hand, foot for foot.
Yeah, revenge definitely
has its purpose.
Can you say more about that?
It balances things out.
It can be a release, too.
That's for sure.

[KNOCKS ON DOOR]
[DOG BARKS]
Yes?
Sorry to bother you, ma'am.
I'm not bothered.
Del Harris, Pittsburgh PD. Do
you happen to know a Ramona Paltz?
I know a couple people named Ramona.
[PANTING] Ma'am, I
don't mean to alarm you,
but people are winding up dead.
And Ramona is she your daughter?
Look, I know your last name
even though somebody changed it
on the mailbox downstairs.
This is a very serious situation
and lives may be in danger. Your
daughter might be able to help.
Mom, it's okay. I know who he is.
Sue Herlitz was involved with
something pretty important.
And I have a hunch you know about it.
Follow me.
That's a lot of boxes.
Sue was about to take
down Landwill Energy.
We'd been quietly mounting
our case for months.
They were making water tests
disappear and fudging test results
so they could have an easier time
getting people to lease their land.
We were planning on taking the case
to the state Attorney General's office.
Are you okay?
Yeah, I'm fine.
Why was Sue going to
Nell McKenna's house?
Mrs. McKenna's dead now,
in case you hadn't heard.
I know. I heard it on the news.
Yeah, she was so scared of something
or someone that she confessed
to murdering her own husband
'cause she felt safer in prison.
What else can you tell me?
We had five witnesses who were
willing to testify against Landwill.
Nell McKenna was the person
who was manipulating the
test results for them.
She used to have a water testing
company, Allegheny Water Testing,
and Landwill had hired her.
Her company did the tests
and she agreed to fudge the results,
but when she realized that Landwill
was settling cases for
millions of dollars,
she wanted a cut of the action.
She tried to extort them.
And they started paying her
off but then, she wanted more.
She got greedy. So then what?
So then, after I
realized how Nell McKenna
played into all this,
Sue approached her.
Then it seemed like she
was gonna come on board.
She was gonna be our
star witness, in fact.
But then they killed her
husband and she got scared.
[SNIFFS] Was anyone else helping
you and Sue with this investigation?
No, it was just us.
We had all the pieces, we just needed
Nell McKenna to agree to testify.
You know you're sitting
on a powder keg here.
Landwill's a powerful company.
Ever since Sue was killed, I
haven't been back to my place.
I hardly ever leave this apartment.
Nell McKenna was being
threatened by someone.
Do you know who was threatening her?
No. I'm almost positive
whoever it was killed Sue.
You know they'll eventually find
you. They won't stop looking.
You'd be wise to continue
keeping a low profile.
You were smart to disappear.
You call me immediately if this
person gets in contact with you.

What's your friend's name again?
Angus Braden Moon.
Do you think he feels bad
about killing that family?
Yeah, I know he does. In fact, he
wrote to me several times about it.
I think if he had another
chance to relive those events,
he would make a very different choice.
How'd he kill 'em?
He shot them all while they were
sleeping. At point blank range.
Do you think he even
wants to be forgiven?
In our letters we've
discussed the nature of mercy.
I've been trying to impress upon him
that God is capable of forgiveness,
but how one has to forgive oneself, too.
The fact that he started to
contend with his conscience
that he's been harboring regret
for what he did seventeen years ago.
In many ways, admitting this to
himself has been a huge relief for him.
Do you think he's afraid to die?
I think we're all a
little afraid of death.
I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't.

happens to our souls, but
I do believe that each
of us possesses one.

Even Angus Braden Moon, yes.
Are people basically good?
Like how we are when we're kids?
I think we start out that way.
And then, depending on the circumstances,
some of us stray from virtue.
But if we do stray, there's always
a way to get back on the right path.
God is there for us.
