Backstage (2016) s02e01 Episode Script

And We're Back....

[Carly.]
Previously on Backstage I just took it to see where you got your samples but you made them because you're DJ Diamondmind! [Kit.]
Keep your voice down.
You're the one, Bianca.
It's always been you.
[Bianca.]
I could be the next star of the next big love story.
- [crowd cheering, applauding.]
- [Jax.]
I'm going on tour, with DJ Diamondmind.
Now we both have exciting things to do this summer.
I didn't get the part in L.
A.
[Alya.]
I think Miles and I just broke up.
The Primas are giving me a chance to dance with them.
[Vanessa.]
C's my best friend and if you can't handle that, then maybe I'm not the right girl for your team.
We'll be replacing you on the team, effective immediately.
[Cassandra.]
You are no longer a Prima.
[Helsweel.]
The new addition to the Primas will be Carly.
You still have a chance to secure your spot at Juilliard for the summer.
[Vanessa.]
I saw these weird hip-hop dancers [Sasha.]
It was probably The Streets.
Not real dancers.
[Vanessa.]
They seemed pretty good.
[indistinct chattering.]
[Carly.]
I came up with a plan to get revenge on Julie for getting Maria fired and if we don't do something big, Julie's gonna be publicly humiliated.
[Sasha.]
Nobody's gonna find out because nobody's gonna tell.
[Vanessa.]
The secret dies with us.
["Don't say it" playing.]
[indistinct chattering.]

With me.
["Spark" playing.]
My eyes are open But I cannot see And I'm up and walking Still feels like a dream Until our eyes adjust, I guess We're only feeling in the darkness Oh, oh, oh - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me We just need a spark [school bell ringing.]
[Durani.]
So, let's go over the facts.
You set off the sprinklers.
We did.
[Durani.]
You caused thousands of dollars in damages.
[sighs.]
We did.
You did, however, raise the funds to pay back the school during the open house.
We did.
And the reason you did all of this was so that you could save Julie Maslany's art installation from being sabotaged.
Which we did.
A sabotage you orchestrated yourself in the first place.
And that's where it gets complicated.
- Technically, Vanessa - I heard everything you had to say before the summer, Ms.
Catto.
It's my turn to do the talking now.
Keaton isn't just a school.
It's an incubator of imagination.
A place where dreams are formed, challenged, nurtured.
Where the future is born.
Where talent, hard work and passion is everywhere you look.
[voices overlapping.]
- Are you looking, ladies? - [girl.]
Give me a second! [indistinct chattering, laughter.]
When you set off the sprinklers, you extinguished the first spark in a student's creative journey.
You muted hundreds of recordings.
Washed away hours of painting, all because you made a bad decision.
There isn't just one punishment that can make up for all the damage you guys have caused, so I'm gonna entrust you with the very thing that you betrayed.
Keaton.
I don't get it.
We're in charge of Keaton? Not even close.
For the entire school year, you'll be Keaton's keepers.
Whatever Keaton needs, you'll do it.
And first on the list, the Grade 12 art class has asked that you guys repaint last year's open house mural so they can have a fresh slate to paint on first thing tomorrow.
How are we supposed to paint that with these? The art department said that all their big brushes were destroyed by the flood.
Convenient.
Well, you have until the end of the day.
And I don't wanna hear that you guys skipped class either.
You'll use your spare, lunch, after school if you have to.
- But I have my Prima audition today.
- Then you'd better get to work.
All right and, uh, ladies [snaps fingers.]
welcome back to Keaton! Let's make it a great year, huh? - I don't want to talk about it.
- Too bad.
Kit, I'll talk to her.
- Swear? - Swear.
We just got back from the tour last night.
I haven't even seen her yet.
- Just cut me some slack.
- It's just that Bianca needs to know.
I need to know what? So this is weird.
No, no, no, no, no.
[stammers.]
It's not - It's just that - Spit it out, Jackson! Well, Kit.
Kit actually, actually wanted me to tell you that DJ Diamondmind had asked us if you would do vocals on his next track.
What? For real? [chuckles.]
[trilling musical scale.]
This year's gonna be different.
Because I'm different.
And I refuse to be distracted by distractions.
[trilling.]
Nope.
Not getting distracted.
I have the best boyfriend of all time.
Sorry.
- I didn't mean to it came out wrong.
- No.
Don't apologize to me.
I'm happy for you and Jax and you don't have to tiptoe around me.
I'm the one who broke up with Miles, remember? [whispers.]
I'm good.
Sure, she is.
Ah, welcome back, everyone! Hope you all had a great summer.
You ready to start this year with a bang? These three students, are arguably the best musicians in this year's graduating class.
Is that the Frances O'Connell? She's like, the most talented musician at Keaton.
She's legendary! And as a part of their independent study unit, they'll mentor a group of younger students.
Just like an orchestra chooses their musicians, these three mentors will choose their mentees, through blind auditions.
Yes, Bianca? What if more than one mentor wants the singer? Then we leave it to the singer to choose the mentor.
Makes sense? Okay, mentors, take your seats.
[Park.]
Then let's start.
Who wants to go first? Okay, whenever you're ready.
- [guitar music playing.]
- Oh, I'm ready.
["Welcome Back" playing.]
Hi, I'm back here for another round I'm not out just because I'm down It's not how I live my life away Oh, they say "You got the hands for it, then" Oh, they'll make you Sing and dance for it You lie awake All night and day Don't get distracted.
Don't get distracted.
Don't get distracted.
But still I go to school With my face on Act a fool With a grace I'm not used to Please stand up, Frances.
Please stand up.
And I promise to play it cool If you welcome me back If you welcome me back [applauding.]
Whoo! Quinn Arden.
Leslie Ash.
Beckett Bradstreet.
Beckett Bradstreet? Who's the genius that skips the first day of class? Helsweel's gonna eat him alive.
Great name, though.
Beckett Bradstreet.
Transfer student.
Everything okay? Yeah.
I'm just trying to calculate how much time we have to paint over the murals before the Prima audition.
I'm so happy you're re-auditioning.
Yeah, just think how amazing that'd be.
- You and me in the Primas together? - It'll be a dream come true.
It really would.
But Aren't you going to miss Sloane's Crew? - I mean, you won't be able to do both.
- I know.
I mean, yeah, I'll miss those guys but the Primas are the best.
And I wanna be the best.
Of course, it's just Ms.
Catto! Fresh from Juilliard.
Ms.
Catto will be our sophomore dance captain.
[class applauding.]
As you may or may not know, the Primas are accepting one new dancer from the 10th grade this year.
However, all because you can audition, doesn't mean you should.
This is mine.
I'm ready.
Cassandra Miller, the Prima captain, Hannah Jones, the Grade 11 dance captain, myself, and now Ms.
Catto will be adjudicating.
Sign-up sheets are on the board.
[Miles.]
Carry you back tonight We could fly over the city We could do this thing right As long as the night's full of stars Wherever we are As long as the night's full of stars Whoa As long as the night's full of stars To light where we are As long as the night's full of stars, Whoa Don't stand.
Don't stand.
Just another night full of stars [applauding.]
Okay, Miles, great job.
Looks like you have two mentors that stood up.
It's up to you now.
Who do you pick? Don't choose Frances.
Don't choose Frances.
It's a tough choice.
But I choose Frances.
[keyboard clicking.]
I'm sorry.
I panicked.
I don't know, it was just the first thing that came to mind.
Save it.
- I don't get it.
What's the big deal, Kit? - [scoffs.]
"What's the big deal?" Seriously? I don't know how I spent a whole summer on a tour bus with you and I didn't [boy.]
Just kiss already.
- [girl laughs.]
- Ew.
- He's like my best friend.
- Aw! Really? I didn't mean that as a compliment.
[cell phone chiming.]
- [Kit sighs.]
- [cell phone beeping.]
"Diamondmind did more than chaperone Keaton's Kit and Jax.
He may have played matchmaker.
Are Jax and Kit Keaton's newest "it" couple?" Okay.
Who sent this to TMK? - [classmates laughing.]
- It's not funny.
Bianca's gonna kill me.
Is that such a bad thing? - [Kit sighs.]
- I need to go find her.
Tell her, Jax.
[sighs.]
Wipe that smirk off your face, Scott.
I know it was you.
I don't think we're gonna make it.
We will.
Just keep painting.
Focus.
[sighs.]
You're right, stay positive.
And if we don't make it, then maybe it was just never meant to be.
Uh, hello? Where's the positive spin to that? I want back in the Primas.
And maybe, just maybe, one of the judges can rearrange the schedule so I dance near the end? Give me more time? No, of course.
[sighs.]
Carly, what's wrong? You're tugging on your ear.
I am? I am.
[sighs.]
It's just I don't know.
I like that you have your crew and I have mine.
There's something nice about that.
- You don't want me in the Primas? - No, I do.
It's just with everything that happened last year, I don't want anything coming between us again.
And you think us being in the Primas together will tear us apart.
When you say it out loud, I hear how silly it sounds.
I hope this won't affect how you judge my dance.
I promise, I will evaluate you on your skill.
Our friendship will have nothing to do with it.
[Cassandra.]
Auditions are starting.
Helsweel got permission for you to cut out early.
[sighs.]
[Cassandra.]
Not you.
Of course, how silly of me.
I'll try to reshuffle the schedule so you go last.
It should give you enough time.
You're gonna kill it.
- [door opening.]
- [sighs.]
We're gonna rock it this semester.
I can't wait to get to know each and every one of you.
[Miles.]
Us, too.
We'll be working in a group and one-on-one.
- Sounds awesome.
- It will be.
- Okay, I'll see you later.
- See ya.
Are you losing your mind? What did I do? Clueless.
You chose to be in my group.
Don't you think that'll be a little awkward? So awkward? I didn't choose your group.
I chose Frances' group.
- And why do you care? - Because I need to focus.
Then focus.
Why would I have anything to do with that? You don't.
He does.
If you're worried about me being uncomfortable because of the breakup, I'm not.
I'm good.
[sighs.]
This has nothing to do with our relationship.
I just don't think you bring out the best in me.
Musically.
I get it.
- Thank you.
- So quit.
- What? - Go tell Frances you want another mentor.
- I'm sure she'll understand.
- I'm not doing that.
You quit.
She's the best and I want the best.
- Let's ask Frances to choose, then.
- Great idea! - Great! - After you.
[Bianca sighs.]
So much drama with those two.
[school bell ringing.]
- Did you do it? - Oh, hey.
Yeah, no.
I've been looking for her everywhere.
- Can't seem to find her.
- [scoffs.]
Or maybe you just don't wanna find her.
You're avoiding the inevitable.
[sighs.]
You're right.
I just I don't wanna lose her.
It's not right.
Kit, it was a meaningless kiss with a backup dancer - that I will never see again.
- [sighs.]
- It meant nothing.
- I hate that you put me in this position.
What position? I know that you cheated on Bianca and she doesn't.
- It's a secret I have no right knowing.
- Hey.
I've kept your secret for almost a year now.
You've asked me not to tell anyone that you're DJ Diamondmind and I've kept it.
Can you not do the same for me? I hate when Jax is right.
Look, I messed up.
I admit that.
And I feel horrible for it.
[inhales.]
But I love her.
Oh.
Yeah.
Okay.
I won't tell her.
Thank you.
- Thank you so much.
- But, Jax if you really do love her, then you have to tell her the truth.
[classical music playing.]
I didn't hate it.
[door opening.]
Did I make it? Barely.
[Vanessa sighs.]
[thumps.]
[faint giggling, chattering.]
- Are you okay? - [Vanessa.]
Yeah.
I'm fine.
I'm just a colossal klutz.
[thumps.]
Vanessa? Carly You're gonna be okay.
I did it again, see? - Did it again.
- It's gonna be okay.
["Uninvited" playing.]
You in the back Dressed in the black Keeping us all delighted Hold the applause The effect and the cause Don't call me uninvited Oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh Oh, oh, oh, oh - Um, Frances.
- Oh, hey, my little mentees.
Miles and I've been talking, and we think it's probably best that We don't sing together this semester.
For the sake of the music.
Is that so? So can you choose who you want to be in your group Miles or me? [chuckles.]
I get it.
You guys used to be a thing or something? Look, take it from someone who's been through all this awkwardness before.
The best thing for you is to make music together.
Not apart.
- You know, for the sake of the music.
- No, but we, we really need to talk Guys! I can't wait to work with you.
It's gonna be amazing.
Bianca.
I've been looking everywhere for you.
Start talking.
The stuff on TMK is a lie.
I knew something was going on with Kit.
- I could tell, I'm not a moron, Jackson! - No, no.
I know you're not sorry.
Look me in the eyes.
Look at me and tell me the truth.
Did you cheat on me with Kit? Bianca Blackwell, I did not cheat on you with Kit.
It's the truth.
Just it Maybe not the whole truth.
There wasn't a day, an hour, a second that I wasn't thinking I missed you.
So, it's true.
What do you mean? Even the DJ D thing, he wants me to sing on his next track? - Yeah, that's true too.
- [giggles.]
You're the best, Jackson.
Simply the best.
[Jenna.]
How is she? Carly says they're still waiting for the x-rays but it's not looking good.
- I can't believe this is happening.
- Again.
So she's really not going to be able to dance? She must feel terrible.
She's a fighter.
She'll get through it.
Any idea who got into the Primas? Someone named Mindy from Grade 9.
Oh, and the new guy who skipped class this morning.
Beckett Bradstreet? The dance gods must be smiling on him.
Yeah, how'd that joker get in? - [Sasha.]
Because Vanessa didn't dance.
- Hm.
- Hope he's good.
- [Sasha sighs.]
[Cassandra.]
Beckett? [bag thumps.]
What? Was that? Yep.
It's my party, I'ma dance if I want to Full attention, my eye on your crew Build it up, back it up if you want to Step up I'ma hit you with a follow-through I got style and I got class Let's slow it down, don't move so fast If you got style and you got class Better throw it down And shake that shh Don't say it Don't say it Don't say it
