Backstage (2016) s02e03 Episode Script

Choices

Previously on Backstage What do you expect me to do? Come out as DJ Diamondmind? [Jax.]
I just wish we didn't have to lie about it.
I know that you cheated on Bianca and she doesn't.
It's a secret I have no right knowing.
I could go to Julliard and make my parents happy.
It's like a dream.
[girl.]
What don't you do? You're this amazing dancer, an incredible artist.
[Julie.]
I'm juggling so many things.
If I let one of them go, everything will come crushing down.
[Sasha.]
Even though blogging is my second life, I wanna show you how much I wanna dance with you guys.
I found that picture in Jenna's locker.
Photoshopped, just like the picture was on the blog.
[girl.]
Jenna's the blogger! You need to be very, very nice to Jenna.
[Jenna.]
Then my dad pulled out two tickets to Giselle at the Bolshoi Ballet.
It was amazing.
He knew everyone.
I got an autograph from Nina Kaptsova.
[girl.]
You think you're better than us? - [boy.]
Check it out.
- [people jeering.]
- Okay.
- Okay.
Stop! Violence is never the answer.
At Keaton, we solve our problems like this.
Kick it! ["Keaton Fight Song" playing.]
[boy.]
Come on, girls.
Keaton [people cheering.]
[drumbeats playing.]
We can light your fire Make your dream a realization We're all like a lion laughin', cryin' Future of the nation How are you gonna stop us now? Our hearts, like a drum, keep beatin' Think you can run with us? You've never been to Keaton Keaton Keaton Another night Another standing ovation This is a passion A high fashion, a vocation How are you gonna stop us now? Our hearts, like a drum, keep beatin' Think you can run with us? You've never been to Keaton [crowd cheering.]
Listen up, people.
This year, Keaton's hosting the CAMDAs! [yelling, cheering.]
CAMDAs: Composition in Art, Music, Dance, and Acting.
They're basically the Olympics of art, a.
k.
a.
a big deal.
I'm glad everyone's excited.
I have big hopes for this competition and for certain students.
Don't worry, I have a million ideas.
Okay, so Keaton is definitely going to win this year's senior dance Art.
I just, uh, assumed that after Julliard Yeah, I guess.
It's, um You know, we will be lucky to have you in whatever category you choose.
Wait, Jules, are you performing in dance or art? ["Spark" playing.]
My eyes are open, but I cannot see And I'm up and walking Still feels like a dream Until our eyes adjust, I guess We're only feeling in the darkness Oh, oh, oh - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me We just need a spark With Keaton hosting the CAMDAs this year there are big expectations, people.
More so than in past years.
Your training will be rigorous.
Class time, practice after school, weekends.
You must devote yourself 24/7.
I will not tolerate a loss.
Especially that smug teacher from Appleton.
[sighs.]
[sighs.]
Dancing 24/7? She can't be serious.
Serious as a torn tendon.
Why? I just need some spare time if I'm gonna compete in art and dance.
You're still in art class? No.
Not possible.
Actually, I went for art at the CAMDAs two years ago.
And now, you're a dancer.
Look, I trained with you at Julliard all summer.
I know how good you are.
- We need you on this team.
- I am on this team.
I'm just on the art team, too.
Do what you gotta do, but I don't wanna hear any more of this "art talk" on dance time.
Not a problem.
The art program Mm.
They who shall not be named are my people.
I'm sure they'll help me figure something out.
Amy, you heard Ms.
Helswheel.
Get that foot higher.
Commit! [upbeat music playing.]
Ms.
Helswheel's classes are so much more intense this year.
- Hey, it's better than laundry.
- You're right.
[both.]
Keaton's hosting CAMDAs! - Seriously? - That's amazing! I'm sure you'll be able to choreograph something.
Yeah.
There are, like, a million categories.
Teams, duets, solos.
It's gonna be intense.
When I was backstage in Paris at the World Dance Championships, a girl threw up all over my dad because she was dancing so hard.
Oh, nasty.
Paris and Russia? Who's your dad? He's a world-class photo journalist.
He's the best.
Like my best friend.
I love my dad.
I've been to the CAMDAs and Sasha's right.
They're seriously intense.
Everybody better bring their A-game.
Who does this guy think he is? I can give you notes on your jumps if you want.
My jumps are top notch.
Thanks.
I just figured you'd jump at the chance since you're kind of obsessed with me.
Wait, me? Obsessed with you? No.
Nu-uh.
Look, I'm the opposite of obsessed.
De-obsessed.
Un-obsessed.
Whatever it is, is what I am.
That's not what your new TMK post says.
Well, there's your first clue.
If I was running TMK, which I'm not, I'd never write a post about you.
It's not me.
It's totally me.
But if people found out I've been pretending to be Sasha for months, they'd think I was a crazy person.
I heard Lindsey Hurtsburger's writing TMK now.
Yeah.
Don't stress, bro.
Lots of people are obsessed with me.
I need to fix this, ASAP! [hip hop music playing.]
I am going to rock the CAMDAs.
As you guys may have heard, I actually worked very closely with DJ Diamondmind all summer.
Yeah, and definitely picked up a few tricks.
- [boy.]
That's cool, man.
- Kit was there, too.
Yeah, but I was just DJ D's assistant.
I'm not a musical consultant like you.
Honestly, Jax can have the fame.
Being DJ D is only about the music for me.
I wear a helmet for a reason.
So, your musical consultant had an amazing idea.
This ought to be good.
How about a feature on DJ D's next track with DJ G? Now, he wants the fame and the music? All right, everyone take your seats.
We will get to the CAMDAs soon enough, but first, I have a very cool assignment.
I want you all to create a track inspired by everyone's favorite DJ, DJ Diamondmind.
- [boy.]
Cool! - Sweet.
Let's hear your take on DJ D's music by the end of the day.
I think the music gods we're listening.
This assignment can be like my audition.
Let me prove that our collaboration would be awesome.
He can try.
Okay, Jaxy boy.
Impress me.
- I love your color choices, Julliard.
- I'll get to the art.
I just have to figure out my schedule.
I knew you want another CAMDA, but this seems a bit much.
Oh, cute that you care, Matteo, and I am going to win in dance and art.
You're competing in two categories? Dance wants me pretty much all day, so I'll do art after school, on days without dance practice and on alternating weekends.
Do you think Mr.
Patel will let me tszuj a few due dates? You're serious? - You don't think I can do it? - I know you can't.
And I thought, as artists, we're supposed to think outside of the box.
My advice? Throw out the box and find yourself a circle.
What do you mean? I mean, short of creating a whole new dance-art combo category, you're not winning either.
- Yeah, you're right.
- Of course, I'm right.
[indistinct chatter.]
- Nice.
- [Sasha.]
Whoa.
- [boy.]
Yeah, me too.
- [Sasha.]
Here you go.
- [girl.]
Thank you.
- [boy.]
Here, yeah.
- Here you go.
Pleasures all mine.
- [girls giggling.]
See? Happy Sasha's much happier.
- Hey, what's up? [chuckles.]
- Hey! My own fan club? I can learn to like this.
Uh, you never told us you met Carlos Acosta this summer.
Spill, Roy.
Every detail.
Uh, I can't because I didn't meet him.
- Where'd you guys hear that? - [Beckett.]
"Sasha's jumps are amazing.
Just ask Carlos Acosta, soloist at the Royal Ballet, who loved Sasha's technique when they met this summer.
" I knew you were TMK.
[scoffs.]
And I told you that I'm not.
I didn't write that.
[Beckett.]
Look, if you wanted to lie, you should've at least picked something believable.
"Happy" may have been overstating it.
The idea of meeting Carlos Acosta is not crazy.
I meant the part about him liking Sasha's jumps.
Hallway, now! I can't believe this.
This is TM-not okay, Jenna.
- What are you talking about? - You, giving Beckett more ammo against me.
- Oh, this is about Beckett.
- No, it's about you being TMK.
Fine! Yes, it's me.
But I had all the best of intentions.
Was that when you lied about my summer, or turned me into the class joke? Both? Neither.
I don't know! Come on, Sasha.
I honestly was just trying to fix things.
Oh, since we're being honest now, I honestly can't be friends with a liar.
[music box playing.]
[upbeat music playing.]
May I present a new category for the CAMDAs? Performance art.
I love it.
I can definitely see this being a part of the CAMDAs next time.
Next time? No.
This has to happen this year.
I love your passion, Julie.
But adding a new category takes time.
There are committees, presentations, votes.
It's impossible.
Why does everyone think everything is impossible? It's not.
I can do this.
- I need to do this.
- I want you to succeed, Julie.
But I'm worried that you're setting yourself up for failure.
I took a look at your class schedule, no spares.
- So? - So, this is your senior year.
There's so much pressure.
Getting good grades, graduating.
A potential scholarship from Julliard.
And that's all before the added stress of the CAMDAs.
I can handle it.
You and I both know what happened with the PSATs last year, when you took on too much.
This is different.
I can do this.
I'll forego sleep if I have to.
Julie you aren't hearing me.
You need to pick one discipline.
- Dance or art.
- For the CAMDAs? - I can't choose just - No, no, no, for the school year.
- What? - Choose.
Dance or art? Drop the other one.
You have until the end of the day.
I gave DJ D that sample.
Yeah.
And the beat was supposed to drop here, but I convinced Diamondmind to wait a half-bar later.
And that key change was totally my idea.
[laughter.]
Apparently, he wrote the whole song.
I mean, not that I care, really.
- How do you put up with him? - Me? He's taking your credit.
[Jax.]
'Cause this is much, much better.
Did Jax told Bianca I'm DJ D? [Jax.]
He wanted to add a different texture I'm just DJ D's assistant.
Mm-hm.
Truth? I know Kit is Diamondmind.
DJ D is so collaborative.
I mean, I didn't get an official writing credit but I really should've.
[girl.]
Well, yeah.
Seriously? Nothing? Why should I care what Jax is saying about DJ Diamondmind? - Because you are Diamondmind.
- Jax told you? No, no, he didn't! Let me explain.
I found out last year when I was spying on you guys to see if Jax was cheating on Jenna.
That doesn't matter.
I know.
And you've kept my secret this whole time? - Even from Jax? - It wasn't my secret to tell.
I can relate.
I know a secret that Bianca doesn't.
Look, I obviously adore Jax.
But let's be real.
He should not be taking credit for something that's not his.
I've had a secret identity my whole life.
[chuckles.]
It's never been an issue.
I know it's my music.
Which means it's your hard work.
You deserve the kudos.
DJ D said I might even get a feature on his next album.
- Wow! - That's what I'm talking about.
I guess a little credit once in a while might be nice.
But - Yeah! Whoo! - It's fine.
I'm fine.
Tell me that's not how I sign up.
[sighs.]
I've been staring at this board for hours.
Do I pick art or dance? Tough choice.
- Hey, Miles.
- Hey.
- Speaking of choices - I thought we were talking about you.
It's not fair.
Dance is my heart, but art is my soul.
Both are right and both are wrong.
- Can I see my final year without dance? - Can you see it without art? - I don't know who I am without art.
- So do art.
But I could have a future in dance.
A chance at a scholarship to Julliard.
So? "So?" It's what Durani, my parents, everyone wants.
Julliard is why they let me stay at this school.
You can't live your life for other people.
[sighs.]
You're Julie Maslany.
You'll make the right choice.
Promise? Promise.
[sighs.]
[electronic dance music playing.]
- This is good.
- Yeah, it is.
But it sounds a little too much like an actual Diamondmind track.
Excuse me? Where's your voice, Kit? I'm not hearing any of you.
Um, hello? I am Diamondmind.
This is all me.
[scoffs.]
See, the point of this assignment was to be inspired by Diamondmind, and I think you got a little lost, Kit.
I thought it was really good.
Oh, we have our next volunteer.
Let's hear your track, Jax.
- [girl.]
Yeah, Jax.
[giggles.]
- Okay.
[electronic dance music playing.]
[girl.]
Ooh.
This is what this assignment was all about.
Borrowing a DJ D sample and producing your own sound.
Great work, Jax.
- [girl.]
That was so good.
- [girl 2.]
Yeah.
See? You, me, musical magic.
[electronic dance music playing.]
[cell phone chimes.]
I thought she was taking this down.
"Confessions of a Liar by Jenna Cristinziano.
First off, let me be clear.
I, Jenna Cristinziano, have been posting as TMK" [Jenna.]
since late last year.
"I lied about that and hurt people I care about.
" So, I had to make a hard choice.
But I realized, once you're honest with yourself about what you really want hard choices aren't that hard.
Mine's a no-brainer.
I choose my friends.
I know it's not easy to regain trust.
So, I'm starting with the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
I lied when I spilled mustard on Ethan's ballet shoes and blamed it on Jessy.
And the time I told Sydney Moore I was too busy to go to her fundraiser I wasn't.
I also lied about seeing the Bolshoi Ballet with my dad.
Actually I lied about my whole summer.
Meeting Russian ballerinas [inhales.]
the dance competition in Paris, all of it.
Which is crazy because honesty has always been a part of who I am.
And I'm ashamed I lost that.
It's just my dad's a photo journalist.
He's never home.
I miss him so much.
While my friends were at Julliard or doing awesome stuff this summer, - [cell phone chimes.]
- I was here, not doing much.
But, then I got a program from the Bolshoi Ballet in the mail.
My dad went just for me.
He described every detail.
The smell of the wood, the amount of breathes Nina Kaptsova took during her solo I mean, is it really lying when I feel like I was actually there? Yes, I know it is.
I guess I lost sight of what matters.
Trust.
Friendship.
Because, in Keaton, your friends are your family.
I just hope my friends can forgive me one day.
You look like a girl who just made a huge, difficult, life-changing choice.
- Do you wanna talk about it? - Honestly? - Not really.
- Okay.
You should know I made a choice, too, but mine was easy.
Will you Julie Maslany, let me take you out and not talk about huge difficult life-changing choices? I'd love that.
- [school bell rings.]
- [Jax.]
So, Kit I rocked the assignment.
- And you did say that - I did.
And DJ D's next track will have a feature.
With DJ me.
You're stealing my idea? You are my music consultant.
Hey, I don't wanna hear it I don't wanna hear it no more Hey, I don't wanna hear it I don't wanna hear it no more Hey, I don't wanna hear it I don't wanna hear it no more You can pack your bags And hit the road 'Cause I don't wanna hear it No more, hey! Hey, I don't wanna hear it I don't wanna hear it no more Hey, I don't wanna hear it I don't wanna hear it no more
