Backstage (2016) s02e06 Episode Script

Gotta be Strong

[Alya.]
Previously on Backstage I want you to come on tour with me.
[Jax.]
I'm going on tour, with DJ Diamondmind.
Now we both have exciting things to do this summer.
My parents split up last year because they didn't trust each other.
The pair I've decided to coach are Carly and Sasha or Carly and Beckett.
- May the best man win.
- Thanks, I will.
[exhales.]
Wow, he's strong.
Mr.
Roy.
Look, I messed up.
I admit that.
[Jax.]
Bianca's gonna kill me.
Tell her, Jax.
I love you.
I kissed someone else.
All day every day All day every day All day every day All day every day Every, every, day, day - [girl.]
Whoo! - [boy.]
Oh! Why is this guy everywhere? You know we do it All day every day Why is he good at everything? Hey, Channing Tutu, step off.
All day every day All day every day All day every day Every, every, day, day You're such a goof.
- [boy 1.]
Yeah, you're the man.
- [girl 1.]
Whoo! - [boy 2.]
Yeah! - [boy 3.]
Whoo! Keep it down Goin' goin' slow Drop it down [boy 3.]
Yeah! [indistinct chattering.]
[girl chuckling.]
Mr.
Bradstreet aren't you supposed to be in Prima practice? I'm learning more here.
Prima practice.
Now.
Good morning, Ms.
Helsweel.
Wait.
What did I do? ["Spark" playing.]
My eyes are open but I cannot see And I'm up and walking Still feels like a dream Until our eyes adjust I guess We're only feeling in the darkness Oh, oh, oh - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me We just need a spark [door closing.]
[grunts.]
Sasha, where were you this morning? You missed an epic Helsweel-Beckett face off.
Just working on my solo.
- [cell phone ringing.]
- Um, Sasha.
[ringing stops.]
Is that a chocolate bar? I love chocolate bars.
[chuckles.]
Twix, Snickers, even Big Turk.
[chuckles.]
And he's still not talking to me.
[sighs.]
[Helsweel.]
Dancers.
Are you waiting for personal invitations? Places, now.
Excuse me.
[sighs.]
Who would like to lead today's warm up? Mr.
Bradstreet, you're up.
I'll lead it.
[Helsweel.]
I am trying to forget about your performance.
[whispers.]
What are you doing? You can barely dance.
Can we talk somewhere else? I need to score major brownie points.
You should've seen the look Helsweel gave me this morning.
- [Helsweel.]
Miss Arden, you lead.
- That's just her face.
- Okay, that is not just her face.
- [whispers.]
Right? [piano playing.]
[Vanessa sighs.]
I have a great idea.
[chuckles.]
Wait for it.
We should do a duet at the CAMDAs.
What? Why should Beckett and Carly be the only ones? Because they're the best.
[scoffs.]
According to who? Helsweel chose them for the duet.
She's grooming them to win.
We make a great team.
And this could be a huge opportunity for us to shine.
I said no.
Look, I'm not interested in dancing with a lying liar who lied.
Gather, gather.
[Helsweel.]
Four more soloists have signed for the CAMDAs, and in a surprising turn of events.
One duet.
What genius volunteered for that dead ambition? Let this be a reminder that there is no shame in silver.
Congratulations on your chutzpah, Jenna and Sasha.
Surprise.
[chuckles.]
As long as the night's full of stars Wherever we are As long as the night's full of stars Whoa Does everyone at Keaton know I kissed someone over the summer? You doing okay? Yeah, never better.
I'm good as new, I'm loving life.
[whispers.]
This is the worst.
I know, man.
If it helps at all, Bianca's hurting too.
She won't even Wait, she talked to you? What did she say? A few things.
It was just one kiss.
It meant absolutely nothing.
If I could take it all back, I would.
You should tell her that.
She won't even look at me, Miles, let alone talk to me.
She completely shut me out.
Whatever you need, I'm here.
- Junk food, bad advice, anything.
- [chuckles.]
There is one thing I need.
- Talk to Bianca.
- [scoffs.]
- Just just tell her my side.
- No.
- She'll actually listen to you.
- I'd rather not get in the middle.
Not again.
I can't do this again.
Please, Miles.
You're all I've got.
[classical music playing.]
I can't believe you went behind my back again! Can't we please move past the minor details and figure out our duet? There is no duet.
I'm not doing it.
Um, it's pretty poor taste to back out after signing up.
- I didn't sign up! - Shh! Why do you not wanna do it? What's holding you back? [Helsweel.]
Use your core, excellent.
Good.
- Nice height.
- We can be as good as them.
No, we can't.
I can't.
Not with that attitude.
- [door opening.]
- [sighs.]
Sing it softly, sing it low Whisper low Wish for change Wish for shame Forget all that you know A latte? Thank you so much.
It's from Jax.
- [cup thuds in trash.]
- Bianca.
I am not discussing the person who shall not be mentioned.
I promised I'd explain his side of things.
It was just one kiss.
- It didn't mean anything.
- Are you serious? Boys are dumb.
You tell me that all the time.
How could you take Jax's side on something that is so clear cut? I'm not taking sides.
One little kiss didn't mean anything? Okay, so if one little kiss doesn't mean anything at all, why don't you just tell Jax about this? [door opening.]
She doesn't hate you, it's just her face.
She doesn't hate you, it's just her face.
Miss Morita.
Don't you have another class to go to? Uh, yeah, I was um, just wondering if I could talk to you about the, um - the CAMDAs! - Then talk.
Oh.
Well I was just thinking, since I'm not dancing, um, maybe I could choreograph something.
Great, pick a student, make sure they win.
That wave means you are dismissed, Miss Morita.
Did I do something wrong? [sighs.]
I don't know.
Did you? Is it my dance crew? Do you have a problem with them, because I have a problem with students who are a bad influence on other students.
Who have I been a bad influence on? - See? If it's about the sprinklers - Miss Morita I'm asking you to stay away from Beckett Bradstreet.
I know I've made some mistakes, but He needs to focus on his dancing.
I still don't understand what I did wrong.
[sighs.]
This is not public knowledge.
Mr.
Bradstreet is here on probation at Keaton.
He is treading on very thin ice.
Miss Morita? Vanessa.
You could do great things here at Keaton and beyond.
But you need to make better choices.
Spending time with Mr.
Bradstreet does not fall into that category.
Oh, uh I did not ask for a response, Miss Morita.
Now get to class.
All Sasha needs is some inspiration.
Beckett Schmeckett.
[grunts.]
Go Sasha! You're the best! So I know his combo.
Don't judge me.
My intentions are pure.
What? "Manic Muscle Transformation Cycle"? Three hours of lifting every day? This is junk.
What is he eating? Excuse me, dancer person, but you're blocking my locker.
And you're not Sasha Roy.
Miles.
How'd it go with Bianca? - Did she say anything? - Um I've been trying to put myself in her shoes all day.
And I honestly, honestly believe that if the roles were reversed, - I'd just forgive her.
- Well, it's funny you should mention that.
Did she see my point about one kiss being nothing? Bianca kissed me.
[laughs.]
That's the worst joke you've ever made.
[chuckles.]
You kissed my girlfriend? Your girlfriend kissed me.
It was just one kiss, like you said.
Yeah, between my best friend and my girlfriend.
Don't freak out, 'cause she only did it to make a point.
It didn't mean anything, I swear.
You know what, Miles? You should just stay out of it.
In fact, you should've stayed out of it from the beginning.
But you were the one who asked me to talk to her.
I was just It was just I wasn't spying.
I was just trying to do something nice for Sasha.
But now I know a thing I shouldn't know.
A thing that makes me worried about Sasha.
I could take it to V and C.
But they'd probably just think I was lying again.
Who are V and C, and why do they have letters for names? Shh! I'm working through something.
I could confront Sasha.
[sighs.]
But then I might lose him completely, and that friendship means everything to me.
- Oh, is it is it my turn to speak now? - Please.
My brother's rugby coach says that sometimes you have to lose to win.
That's literally the worst advice you could give to a sports team.
But it's great advice for me.
[chuckles.]
Thanks! Oh, uh, I'm Jenna, by the way.
[chuckles.]
George Gladwell.
- Pleased to make your acquaintance.
- Okay.
[Jenna.]
Excuse me.
[sighs.]
You kissed my best friend.
You kissed a backup dancer.
That kiss meant absolutely nothing.
Neither did this one.
Doesn't hurt any less, does it? It's happening.
It's happening again.
You just kissed him to upset me.
- You bet I did.
Did it work? - Guys.
Do you see how vindictive she is? - Stop fighting, please.
- [sarcastic laugh.]
Vindictive? He's the bad one.
He's the one that kissed another girl.
- You kissed him! - Enough! Just stop.
Stop telling me what to say to him, and how to feel about her.
I already went through this with my parents and I'm not doing it again.
That convo with Helsweel was definitely weird, but if she wants me to avoid Beckett, - I'll avoid Beckett.
- Vanessa, hey.
[sighs.]
- Are you avoiding me? - No.
No.
No.
You are avoiding me.
Look, if I if I intimidated you this morning with my mad hip-hop skills [scoffs.]
You wish.
I could do this all day.
Unless you wanna tell me what's up.
I don't wanna get on Helsweel's bad side, okay? What does talking to me have to do with Helsweel's bad side? Can we just drop it? - Fine.
I'll go ask her myself.
- No.
Beckett, please.
She told me to stay away from you.
What? I've disappointed her over and over again.
I need to do what she wants.
[grunts.]
I have detention for the rest of my life.
You're on probation.
She told you I'm on probation? It's okay.
I won't tell anyone.
But she doesn't want us hanging out.
So just, please, leave me alone.
I'm sorry.
Whatever.
It doesn't matter.
Just ease into the conversation, Jenna.
- Don't scare him off.
- [Jenna.]
There you are! Oh! Are muscles worth dying for? - Hmm? - What? [sighs.]
This Manic Muscle thing you're doing is really dangerous.
What are you talking about? Athletes do it all the time, it's fine.
It's obsessive and risky.
You don't know anything about it.
Oh, really? Hmm.
Then what's this? You went into my locker.
- Wait, you went into my locker? - Beside the point.
Wow, so you're a liar and a thief.
I came clean.
Now it's your turn.
You don't need some silly guy plan to make you stronger.
You already are.
Not compared to Beckett.
Beckett? All of this is about Beckett? You're completely different kinds of dancers.
Beckett has his strengths and you have yours.
I can't do lifts like he can.
Do you understand how hard it is to be a male dancer who isn't strong? It's humiliating.
Catch me! [grunts.]
Well, it's not pretty, but technically, it's a lift.
- Ha! Hmm.
- Have you lost your mind? You could've hurt yourself, or me.
But I didn't.
Sasha, you are strong.
I know it.
You should too.
[piano playing.]
[Jax.]
Miles, um Jackson and I wanted to apologize.
This, uh, thing between us, it has nothing to do with how we feel about you.
I know.
We're sorry for putting you in the middle like that earlier.
Yeah, especially since what After what you went through with your mom and dad.
I used to press my ear against the floor trying to hear what they were fighting about downstairs.
I thought if I heard my name, if it was about me, then maybe I could fix it.
But I never heard my name 'cause it was never about me.
It was always about them.
You guys care about each other so much.
Whatever happens, don't forget that.
But you have to leave me out of it.
[piano playing.]
[playing accompaniment.]
[playing stops.]
What? Not all of us play every instrument.
[playing resumes.]
[both grunting.]
Again.
[both grunting.]
Again.
[both grunting.]
[both laughing.]
- Again! - Whoa! [grunts, exhales.]
- You did it! - [chuckles.]
We did it.
I'm so excited.
Whoa! - Whoa! Ah - Good.
See? You don't need some silly manic plan.
Thanks.
- For what? You did all the work.
- For believing in me.
So does this mean we're gonna do a duet at the CAMDAs? - We're gonna do a duet at the CAMDAs.
- Oh, yay! [chuckles.]
[phone ringing.]
You're done with that stuff now, right? Oh, right.
Okay.
I'm gonna go book us some studio space.
Proud of you.
[squeals.]
[sighs.]
I just did that lift for the first time ever.
I'm not stopping now.
Why do you even care that Helsweel wants you two apart? I'd be grateful.
Because he's - I don't know, I - [Beckett.]
What is your problem? [whispers.]
That does not sound good.
[Helsweel.]
I am sick and tired of your attitude, young man.
- You told Vanessa I'm on probation.
- No.
- Why would you do that? - Don't bring me into this.
Grow up, Beckett.
You're not here to make friends.
So now I can't have friends? Is that how this school works? You're here to get your life on track.
You've already failed a year, that is quite enough.
Failed? I thought he was a little tall for Grade 10.
I knew Keaton was a mistake.
Why don't I just go live with my dad again? - Would that make you happy? - Beckett! You obviously don't want me here.
Just admit it, Mom! [gasps.]
Did Did he just? Just admit it.
Beckett Bradstreet is Helsweel's son? [mimics explosion.]
[mimics explosion.]
In this life that we're living There's something we need Keep your eye on the prize But don't forget to breathe In this song that we're singing When words are out of place We say we're alone But that's not the case
