Backstage (2016) s02e13 Episode Script

Clear Eyes

[Vanessa.]
Previously on Backstage It's never too late for second chances.
[Miles.]
For me and Julie, I'm pretty sure it is.
So, let's start over? [sighs.]
[Kit.]
DJ Diamondmind is retiring forever.
The Primas have lost perspective.
They think you're the best dancers in the school.
Because we are.
[Vanessa.]
Have you seen our crew dance? [Cassandra.]
Basic.
Low energy.
If we don't fix this problems, we will lose at qualifiers.
First, you belittle me.
And then, you go and steal my steps? - For what? - [Cassandra.]
I'm sorry for sending that video of you and Carly setting off the sprinklers to Principal Durani.
Carly didn't tell you? How am I supposed to trust another word you have to say ever again? [Mindy.]
But we didn't do very well.
[Carly.]
So, what? We placed fourth at the CAMDA qualifiers.
We're totally gonna win in the finals.
Cassandra told me she has a plan, so all we need to do is follow it.
I'm sorry, are you lost? This is Prima practice.
Actually, I heard we were practicing in here today.
- From who? - What does it matter to you? Well, I double checked, and we have the space booked today.
[scoffs.]
Good, you're all here.
All? Cassandra asked if we could help the Primas.
Help the Primas? She asked if you would perform with them, together, as one, at CAMDA finals.
Cassandra asking us to dance with the Primas? I think this is her way of saying sorry for what she did.
And I'll take it.
Maybe, just maybe, this is mine and C's way of making amends.
Maybe this will bring us back together.
So, V's willing to forgive Cassy, but not me? That doesn't seem fair.
But what if working together is what our friendship needs? What if this bring us back together? That's right.
I think you're the missing link to the Prima dance.
Did you drink some really expired green juice this morning? The Primas barely made it through qualifiers, and finals are a week away.
This is our chance to dance in the CAMDA finals.
Be legit.
We need to present something exciting and new if we want to win.
We could teach them a little hip-hop, and they teach us a little ballet.
- It'll be a mashup no one expects.
- And who doesn't love a good mashup? Let me get this straight.
Cassandra, the evil dance dictator, wants Sloane's group to dance with the Primas? [scoffs.]
Have I just entered the Twilight Zone? A chance to perform at CAMDAs? Not the worst idea.
If anyone doesn't like it, you can leave.
But don't come back.
Okay, let's get to work.
Could this actually work? I haven't been happy with our dance either, and V does have good ideas.
Maybe Cassandra has some grand vision I'm not seeing? My eyes are open, but I cannot see And I'm up and walking Still feels like a dream Until our eyes adjust, I guess We're only feeling in the darkness Oh, oh, oh - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me We just need a spark [indistinct chattering.]
I'm pretty sure my eight-year-old cousin could make that one.
Actually, that's my winning art piece from the last CAMDAs.
[chuckles.]
Well, I'm seeing another layer to it now.
Um, and I have math class.
Later.
Julie Maslany, are you a babysitter now? - Why? Do you need one? - Come on.
Twelfth grader, former student president, potential Julliard candidate slumming it with a sophomore.
Thought you'd want someone more mature.
Miles is plenty mature, thank you very much.
If you say so.
- [speaking indistinctly.]
- Hey! [Mindy.]
Whoa.
At least this won't be a complete disaster.
You're here.
Oh, I'm just an observer.
- I'm not dancing.
- Seriously? Okay, guys, let's start with something simple.
First positions.
- [boy.]
Whoa! - [girl.]
Whoa, watch out.
Dance gods, please tell me Cassandra knows something I don't.
Oops! Seriously, I need a sign.
That's That's great, guys.
[gasps.]
Our new costumes! Azadeh, they're beautiful! A happy, encouraging Cassandra.
- You're a genius! - Maybe.
Let's take five.
Actually, why don't we try the costumes on? Sloane's Crew needs practice dancing in them, right? Great idea.
Everyone, grab a costume.
I know that look.
What is Carly up to? There's no way Sloane and her crew are gonna wanna dance in these scratchy sequined wonders.
And if there's one thing Cassy hates the most, it's rebellion.
[sighs.]
[sighs.]
Why is this so difficult? [Bianca.]
Bad piano! You normally take your anger out on gadgets.
What's up? Tell me what you think of this.
Be honest.
- [keyboard clicks.]
- [EDM playing.]
It's not the best thing I've heard.
- [music stops.]
- How about this? [soft music playing.]
I like the first one better.
But you didn't like the first one.
- You asked for honesty.
- [sighs.]
- [music stops.]
- No.
It's not you.
It's It's me.
It's just that ever since I retired DJ Diamondmind, I've been trying to figure out what's next for me.
So, you're blocked.
Nothing feels right.
I just keep spinning my wheels.
You just need to get out of your head.
Come with me.
Come.
Come on! ["Bridges" playing.]
I'm all you need Building a bridge between us It's harder than it should be I'm all you need I'm all you need [music stops.]
Heard you and music man made it offish.
- I thought you'd be happy.
- I was.
But now, I'm rehearsing my 12th grade dance, and all I can think about is my tenth grade boyfriend.
You're worried about the age difference? It's two years.
Some people think two years is a long time.
Think about it this way.
When you're 42, he'll be 40.
- [sighs.]
Sounds so old.
- [chuckles.]
Agreed.
But no one will care then.
Why should they care now? You can't be having doubts already.
I wasn't, until he made this immature joke about my art.
Look, I know Miles.
He saved our band's CAMDA performance.
Even after Alya forced him to sing backup.
He didn't tell me that.
Saving the day and not bragging about it? Sounds pretty mature to me.
Come on, Jules.
You like him.
Are you really willing to throw everything away because of one bad joke? [Sloane.]
These costumes are so scratchy.
I don't get it.
Why do we have to wear bathing suits to dance? These are body suits.
All teams wear them to compete.
Come on, Sloane.
Where's that trademark temper? Are these even waterproof? They're our only spares, Sloane.
- Don't ruin them.
- Please.
So, uh, how about we do some jumps across the floor? Carly, Mindy, show everyone how it's done.
Are these scratchy prison getups the only costumes you got? Yes.
Can't the mighty Sloane handle a few scratches? What did she say? It's nothing.
Ignore her.
[Cassandra.]
You don't hear the Primas whining.
Out loud.
Just saying.
There's a way you don't have to wear them.
Leave.
She's right.
I did not sign up for this.
It's like Carly wants to ruin this merger.
Look, I'm just protecting the Primas 'cause it really feels like Cassy isn't.
[sighs.]
I have to do what I have to do.
Right? Cassandra.
- Sloane! - Wait! You're right.
I'm being unreasonable.
I want us to work together.
And I want you to be comfortable.
So, do what you need to, change your costumes if you want but let's keep dancing.
[sighs.]
Seriously? What is happening today? [hip-hop music playing.]
What? What? [bell ringing.]
[indistinct chattering.]
Hey, what are you, uh What are you doing here? Taking you to lunch.
Did you eat or something already? Um, I just I have a CAMDA thing.
Rain check? So, you weren't making it up.
You are dating Julie Maslany.
- Julie, this is, uh this is Jax.
- Hi.
We've met before.
- I might need my hand back.
- Oh, sorry.
Cool.
So, you're coming to lunch? [stutters.]
You don't wanna come with us.
We're just gonna eat our lunch and jam.
I thought you had a CAMDA thing.
- Well, yeah.
Yeah, after we eat.
- [scoffs.]
Don't listen to him.
I wanna get to know my main man's main squeeze, all right? Cool.
So, what are we eating? I should probably let you know, though, that I do have a mild peanut allergy.
Are those? Throw it.
Just Just chuck it against the wall.
You'll feel better.
[scoffs.]
Look, I appreciate the effort, but how are water balloons supposed to help me find a new sound? Come on! Just get out of your head.
Let yourself be a kid for one minute.
[Bianca yelling.]
[laughs.]
[shrieks.]
Ha! Yeah! [Bianca chuckling.]
And I know what'll make me feel even more better.
[boy.]
Yo, let's go.
Come on.
[laughs.]
No.
No way, Kit.
More better than even English! So, we throw our hands up and then down.
[unzipping.]
That's great, guys.
It's one thing for Sloane's Crew to take off the costumes, but now the Primas are, too? [Vanessa.]
Let's do the last two counts of eight slowly.
Ready? Five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
And two, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Awesome.
Let's try it full speed from the top.
Ready? Five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
And two, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
And three, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Four, two, three, four, five, six, - seven, eight.
- [Carly.]
Stop! Stop! - [girl.]
What's her problem? - How can Cassandra be okay with this? [sighs.]
I have to do what I have to do.
The Primas are super talented elite dancers.
We're an institution.
Keaton royalty.
And you're turning us into this.
I brought Sloane's Crew in for many reasons, not just their moves.
- It's also about their attitude.
- [Carly scoffs.]
- But they aren't Primas.
- Maybe not.
But this is happening.
And you need to get on board.
Now, let's get this party started.
[all cheering.]
[girl.]
All right! Let's go! The Primas and Sloane's Crew are suddenly BFFs, and I'm the outsider? How did this happen? And what am I gonna do about it? So, you used to be in art, but then you went to Juilliard for dance? I did, indeed.
Summer in New York.
I'm so jealous.
Hey, Jax, how's your lunch? Come on, it's not every day we get to eat with a Keaton celebrity over here.
Hey, you toured with a world-class DJ.
Guess we're both Keaton superstars.
[chuckles.]
- Why are we eating with this schlob? - [chuckles.]
He's not a schlob.
No, I'm the luckiest guy here.
[Jax.]
Aw, you guys.
Totes adorbs.
[clears throat.]
Miles, a word? What? No, "adorbs" is a good thing! If you're not ready for this, you need to tell me.
No more childish games.
- Is this about this morning? - And just now.
- Are you embarrassed of me? - What? No.
- Wait, are you embarrassed of me? - I wasn't.
Is it the age thing? First, you insult my art.
Then, you try and ditch me at lunch.
Now, all of these weirdness? - Look, if you're getting cold feet - I'm not.
The art joke was immature.
I'm sorry.
And, of course, I wanted to have lunch with you.
But? But Jax is hopeless.
And I knew he'd goof it up when he saw you.
[chuckles.]
Which wouldn't help your case.
Look, Miles, I love your jokes, usually.
And there are boys in my grade that are immature.
But we said we were cool with making it official.
And I am.
A hundred percent.
Then why'd you pull your hand away just now? - It It was a reflex.
- To what? I wasn't thinking.
I saw her and I panicked.
- Does she not know about us? - Of course, she does.
It's just this is the first time either of us has had something new, and I I didn't wanna rub it in her face.
Thank you for being honest with me and for having a mature conversation.
So, what now? - Now, you tell me that my art was good.
- [chuckles.]
- So, I didn't mess this up? - No, but let's keep having mature conversations, okay? Both of us.
Aw! And the happy couple has returned.
[upbeat music playing.]
This is awesome! [boy.]
Oh.
- [chuckles.]
- Yeah, awesome.
We should not be doing this.
Come on, I've heard you yell at Jax.
- [yells.]
- [boy screams.]
[yelling.]
[both yelling.]
Thanks.
This is the best I've felt in a long time.
Good.
Now, we can go.
Because I don't feel like getting expelled today.
- What is it? - Look at all these people.
Not worried about a new sound or living up to expectations.
Of course, they're worried.
They're Keaton students.
You know what I mean.
They're just enjoying life.
I've been a DJ since I was 12 years old.
- I've toured the world - I get it.
How do you top being Diamondmind? What do you even do after an experience like that? I don't know.
What do you do? - [water balloon splashing.]
- [girls laughing.]
[Durani.]
You two, down here! My office! Now! [Kit chuckles.]
Clap your hands, Primas to my right Let me see your dance Hey, hey, hey, give it to 'em Hey, hey Clap your hands, hey, hey Turn it up, turn it up - Hey, hey - I said Sloane's Crew I can't hear ya There you are, there you are, hey, hey He's jumpin', no trippin' Hey, hey, hey Hey, people, let's dance Do your dance, hey Hit it, hit it, give it to 'em, hey, Give it to 'em, hey Wooh! Hip-hop, let's get on top Hey, now watch this, back on the ground Let's see you shake it - Go shake it, go shake it - Hey Shake what yo mama gave Shake what yo mama gave What's that saying? "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
" And Carly's turn, go shake it Go shake it Wooh! - Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up - Hey And now, everybody, hey, shake it What? Hey, hey, hey, shake it Come shake it - That's great, guys.
- [music stops.]
I realized something today.
We're bigger than just the Primas now.
So, I decided on new costumes.
[all gasping.]
And I picked a new name.
The Keaton Prima Crew.
- [laughter.]
- [man.]
That's sick.
Things are obviously still weird, but I'm glad Carly came around.
If both teams work together, I really think we can win.
We're gonna lose.
But I was wrong.
Sloane's Crew isn't the problem.
Cassandra is.
I didn't tell him anything.
We were caught red-handed, but thanks.
- [sighs.]
- [woman.]
That's right.
Sir, I don't know what she told you, but the balloons were totally my idea, not Bianca's, so please don't punish her for my mistake.
[Durani.]
Sit, Miss Dunn.
So, what could possibly make you think it'd be okay - to throw water balloons out my window? - I needed to get out of my head.
My brand-new suit is soaked.
Tell me you have a better explanation.
Ever since I retired DJ Diamond [chuckles.]
I mean, helped him retire, I just Nothing's been sparking for me, musically.
So, the next logical step is to throw things out a third-floor window? [sighs.]
I thought a few shenanigans would give me a spark, but instead, it made me realize why I haven't been able to find a new sound.
[sighs.]
Because I don't want to.
I think I know.
I want to take a break.
From music? [scoffs.]
No.
From Keaton.
