Apart But Together

- [Ayla.]
Previously on Backstage - I still have feelings for you.
You think you can just walk into my life whenever you feel like it? No, not this time.
[Kit.]
She's my sister.
We're both adopted.
- Who are you, exactly? - I'm her brother.
J.
J.
Hawks invited me to be her apprentice this summer.
Wow.
Maybe even be a back-up dancer for Selena Gomez.
We're getting shut down.
We need to come together to create a project that no one can ignore.
Because we aren't ordinary students.
- [Carly.]
We are Keaton students.
- [cheering.]
Keaton! Keaton! - [school bell ringing.]
- He's coming.
He's coming.
- Hello, sir.
- Cassandra.
Congratulations on Juilliard.
- Make us proud.
- Thank you, sir.
I will.
We're clear.
[indistinct chattering.]
[girl chuckles.]
I think I put too much glue on these eyelashes.
I'm back, baby! [both.]
She's back! [laughs.]
- Woo! - [laughter.]
[Sasha.]
Woo! Yes, she's going to freak out.
Yes, she's going to be upset.
But I have to tell her.
I have to tell her.
- [Vanessa chuckles.]
- Oh, no.
My eyelash fell.
Help me.
C! - You're back, baby! - [chuckles.]
I get to dance in this season's performance, help save Keaton, and go to Prima Camp.
Everything's comin' up V! Just do it.
I'm not going to Prima Camp with you this summer.
I was offered to go on tour with Selena Gomez.
J.
J.
wants me to apprentice her.
That's - [sighs.]
Wow.
- I'm sorry.
Don't be sorry.
That's amazing.
Selena Gomez? That's huge, Carly.
[sighs.]
I wanted to tell you earlier, but there was never a good time.
You're going on tour with Selena Gomez.
Every time is a good time for that news.
Really? You're not mad? Of course, I'm not mad.
This is an opportunity of a lifetime.
When do you leave? This is where she's gonna freak out.
Tomorrow.
Amazing! I'm so proud of you! She's not even a little upset? [sighs.]
It's like she doesn't even care.
Found it! Found it.
- [Sasha sighs.]
- Found it.
My eyes are open, but I cannot see And I'm up and walking Still feels like a dream Until our eyes adjust I guess we're only feeling In the darkness Oh, oh - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me - We just need a spark - Oh, oh - To light up the dark - Oh, oh I can feel you with me I can feel you with me We just need a spark Check, one, two.
Check, one, two.
- [feedback.]
- [humming.]
- [taps microphone.]
- [boy.]
I can't believe this is happening.
I've been trying to contact her ever since I saw her on a YouTube video.
- And now, I'm gonna meet my sister.
- [Scarlett humming.]
It has to be perfect.
Take off your hat.
I can't believe that's the shirt you decided to wear on the most important day of your life.
[Scarlett humming.]
- Should I go home and change? - No, it's too late now.
- We'll work with what we got.
- [Scarlett snapping fingers.]
- [Scarlett.]
Check, one, two.
- Okay, here goes.
Check, one, two.
[Scarlett.]
Snow falls softly all around - Scarly.
- Kit, you came.
Scarlett I want you to meet someone.
Who? No one.
Just kidding.
[chuckles.]
They see fields I see you They hear rain I hear too No, something is missing with these harmonies.
Yeah, 'cause this song was written for you and Miles, not you and me.
[scoffs.]
Yeah, well, he got himself banned from music, remember? And I'm glad because I never wanna sing with him ever again.
What happened between you two? Doesn't matter.
He hates me and I hate him.
End of story.
Do you really wanna end what could be your last day at Keaton in a fight with Miles? Yes.
- But, Alya - Butt out, Bianca.
I'll see you at the performance.
[in deep voice.]
Keep working on your baritone range.
My? You know, sometimes, it's good not to meddle.
Like when? Like now.
Sometimes, just being an observer is what helps the most No, Jax, when you know two people should be together then you don't just wait for destiny to come and run its course.
You do something.
Alya and Miles are over.
And they've been over for a long time.
There's nothing that you can do.
Wrong again.
Alya and Miles may think they hate each other, but if there's ever been an OTP, it's them.
Your brain works in very mysterious ways, B.
[chuckles.]
But, yeah, maybe maybe you're right.
Of course, I'm right.
So, now what? Now we meddle.
[Vanessa laughing.]
Look at her.
She's so happy.
[sighs.]
The nerve.
Seriously.
I thought she'd care that we weren't gonna spend the summer together.
- Again.
- I'm sure she cares.
She doesn't need me anymore.
She has him.
[sighs.]
I know she doesn't need me, but I need her.
So, are you upset or not upset? I guess I'm a little upset, but not at Carly.
- Then who? [chuckles.]
- At [sighs.]
Selena Gomez? [chuckles.]
Okay, Justin Bieber.
But, come on, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her.
[sighs.]
I get that, and I'm super happy for her.
I'm just sad for me.
- What are you doing here? - I have work to do.
Everyone is out there saving the school right now, and you're in here, doing math equations.
Yeah, I just have to finish this one unit and then I pass math.
[Jax.]
Way to go, buddy.
What, are we still not talking? I had no right to freak out at you like that.
You were just trying to help me.
No, I-I get it.
You were under a lot of stress.
I'd do the same thing if I Sorry to break up the bro-pology, but we need you, Miles.
Like now.
What happened? Alya is having one of her legendary queen frozen moments.
Sorry, I can't help you with that.
This isn't about Alya.
This is about saving Keaton.
You need to step up.
Fine.
[Miles sighs.]
Go.
[laughs.]
[boy.]
There you are.
I'm sorry I bailed.
I freaked out.
But I'm ready.
I'm really ready now.
You can't come into our lives and turn everything upside down and just walk away 'cause it gets too scary for you.
[scoffs.]
- I know that.
- Do you? No.
I won't let you do this.
- Go.
- But I - I can't just - I I have to protect Scarlett.
[sighs.]
It would break her if you just came in to her life and then ditched because it got too real.
Hey, I would never ditch her.
Okay? She's my sister.
[scoffs.]
She's She's my sister.
I'm not trying to replace you.
[sighs.]
You kinda freak me out.
You kept saying everything had to be perfect.
Look at me.
I'm the furthest thing from perfect.
It was just the shirt.
When I meet her everything will change.
Everything already has changed.
You know her better than anyone.
If you think she wouldn't wanna meet me I'll go.
It's up to you.
- [boy.]
Scarlett.
- [indistinct chattering.]
Madam President.
My parents invited a bunch of bigwigs, the school board's here.
- If they like what they see - They will.
Then they'll make sure everyone knows that Keaton's worth saving.
- You're a man of your word.
- I am.
But the question is, are you? Julie will not be dancing in today's performance.
[Matteo.]
I guess you are a woman of your word.
Miss Dunn.
What is going on here? Who are all these people? Mr.
Taylor.
Nice to see you.
Mr.
Taylor, head of the school board.
- [woman.]
It's time.
- Thank you.
Excuse me! If I may have your attention.
A few weeks ago, it came to our attention that there have been plans for Keaton to be shut down.
We know that we may not have much power in making that decision, but we wanted to remind all of you important people how wonderful this school is and how much it means to all of us.
So, without further ado, I present to you, "The Seasons of Keaton.
" The moon shines bright In such a night as this When the sweet wind Did gently kiss the trees And they did make no noise In such a night From you Have I been absent in the spring When proud-pied April in all his trim Put a spirit of youth in everything Hey, I can hear it fall And don't it sound sweet? The kids are all dancin' in the street Watchin' the water Trickle off of birds Singing the first song I ever heard Oh Lovin' the first rainfall The green's comin' back Wakin' up to a new life, new life Somethin' I've only dreamed of [humming.]
- [people laughing.]
- [indistinct chattering.]
[upbeat music playing.]
[man.]
I see you everywhere Maybe it's a summer haze And I'm hoping we can ride this wave Water's only colder Without you here, babe Maybe if you turn around We can make some crazy days - Oh, oh - Could you be my girl? - Oh, oh - Even for the summer What's the chance You could be my summer romance? Gettin' closer while we slow dance Please excuse the forward advance Would you be my summer romance? [people cheering.]
[man.]
All right! What's she doing here? I thought we had a deal.
Stop! Shut it down! - [Scarlett.]
Matteo, calm down.
- I said stop! Stop! [thunder sheet rumbling.]
Summer storm has arrived.
Our revels now are ended.
- [drumming.]
- [thunder sheet rumbling.]
This cloud now has descended.
I said stop already.
Mom, Dad, we're done here.
Let's go.
Watch out.
He's winding the watch of his wit.
What are you talking about? [Julie.]
But soft what light through yonder window breaks? Arise, fair sun, arise.
The storm is passing.
Quick.
Autumn is here.
[laughing.]
[applause.]
Well played, Maslany.
- You gave me no choice.
- We always have a choice.
And you going to Juilliard was the wrong one.
I'm not going.
What do you mean you're not going? After all that happened, I realized that Juilliard isn't what I want.
Go ahead, say "I told you so.
" I don't need to.
So, what are you gonna do now? Everything.
What are you doing here? What do you mean? I thought you couldn't sing.
Of course, I can sing.
And you told me to leave you alone, so leave me alone.
[scoffs.]
Fine.
- Good.
- Stop it! Stop acting like fools already! And make beautiful music together for Keaton.
- I told her not to meddle.
- Too late.
The rustling leaves A hint of rain My shining heart rusts again My eyes stay closed But memories rise The earth, her face The lake, her eyes [both.]
They see fields I see you They hear rain I hear too Your life, your voice Your fear, your joy Everywhere, everywhere Everywhere is you At least, we can say we tried.
So, this could be our last dance at Keaton.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- I'll miss you.
- I'm gonna miss you so much.
[chuckles.]
I was hoping you'd say that.
Of course, I'll miss you.
I was just worried that you didn't care anymore.
- I thought you didn't care anymore.
- Of course, I care.
I'm so proud of you, C.
I'm proud of you Miss Prima Captain.
[chuckles.]
- We'll Skype every day.
- Twice a day.
Here.
- What's this? - My heart.
Even when we're apart, we'll always be together.
[chuckles.]
[applause.]
We're almost up.
[sighs.]
Let's make this count.
By the way, if you give that to Selena Gomez, I will literally not talk to you ever again.
[both laugh.]
[dramatic music playing.]
Snow falls softly all around Will it disappear When it hits the ground? The days grow shorter There's a hopeful breeze Of dark to light The oceans unfreeze Yo, march with the footprints In the snow We gonna march to the beat That everybody know, oh-oh Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Yo, march the footprints That show the way home So, march the footprints Now everybody follow Oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Don't take that life for granted You don't understand yet That when it's gone It's gone, it's gone, it's gone You raise your hands up higher Forge your path in fire Way up past the sky You're reaching for the sun Don't take that life for granted You don't understand yet That when it's gone It's gone, it's gone, it's gone You raise your hands up higher Forge your path in fire Way up past the sky You're reaching for the sun You raise your hands up higher Forge your path in fire Way up past the sky You're reaching for the sun [people cheering, applauding.]
Wow.
Uh, I don't know what to say.
Say you won't shut down Keaton.
We know we can't make the decision for you, but don't forget what you saw today.
Guys, you should have come to me.
If one incredible show could save this school, this is it, but that's not how it works.
I have been working really hard to make sure we don't close down.
But there are a lot of factors that play into this decision.
A lot that we have no control of.
But maybe you can.
We can't give up on Keaton.
I can't.
And so, I promise to do everything I can to make sure this school stays open.
There will be a Keaton, somehow, somewhere.
Keaton will go on.
[people cheering.]
[Kit.]
Scarlett.
Did you watch it? What a magical day.
I want you to meet someone.
[indistinct chattering.]
So, I guess we were, uh, set up.
Yeah.
Looks like it.
[sighs.]
So this could be it.
Our last day at Keaton.
Yeah.
- [sighs.]
Look, Miles, um - I'm sorry.
About what I said earlier.
Oh, I get it.
It It was wrong of me to say what I said.
It wasn't fair.
[sighs.]
Yeah.
Yeah.
[chuckles.]
It was good to sing with you again.
You too.
Well, I guess I'll see you around.
Sure.
Have a good summer.
You too.
Don't take that life for granted You don't understand yet That when it's gone It's gone, it's gone, it's gone You raise your hands up higher Forge your path in fire Way up past the sky You're reaching for the sun Don't take that life for granted You don't understand yet That when it's gone It's gone, it's gone, it's gone
