Baywatch (1989) s02e14 Episode Script

Big Monday

"Next on" Baywatch: You ever heard of Big Monday? Kind of hard to imagine 30-foot waves on this beach.
"He just surfaced;" he was holding her.
I found it in the hand of a little girl I rescued.
You wear that till you one with the wave inside you.
Everybody gets scared.
Even your dad, Hobie.
He's never been scared of anything.
Big Monday only comes once every 30 years.
I want to know what it feels like.
Lifeguard! Please, oh, God! My baby, she's drowning! Lifeguard! Morning.
Good morning.
Taking the day off? No.
Just taking the morning off.
Could you move your truck? It's blocking my view.
Don't forget to turn over.
I don't want to see you go home half-baked.
Turn me over on your way back.
Sure.
Bye.
I can't believe I just said that.
Boys, boys! You're getting sand all over the towel.
Hank, watch these wild Indians.
Now, I want you to eat something before you go into the water.
Yes, sweetheart, you can go in the water.
- You mad at me? - You're good.
Hi.
Don't be shy.
What's your name? Hey.
Anybody complain about that music? Everybody is complaining.
I asked them to turn it down, and five minutes later, it's blasting again.
Maybe you can charm them into permanent submission.
Maybe you can be back in 15 minutes.
You know, we ought to just come up with a new lifeguard competition: Run, eat, run.
Next time I'll just do what Harvey does, and I'll order Domino's.
Excuse me.
Have you seen a little girl about this high? She's got a French braid.
- No.
- Thank you.
Excuse me, miss, have you seen my little girl? She's wearing a neon flowered bathing suit.
She has a little French braid in her hair.
Yes, I did, and she went that way about five minutes ago.
- This way? - Uh-huh.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
- Excuse me, miss! If you can't find her, you should tell the lifeguards.
They find lost children all the time.
What's her name? It's Lili, but it doesn't matter.
She won't hear it she's deaf.
Hello, ladies.
Enjoying yourselves? You see those dolphins earlier? Great, huh? Huh? Excuse me, could I talk to you for a second? Sure.
Could you do me a real big favor? - What? - What? Well, you see, I need to hear if someone needs help.
Could you turn the stereo down just a little bit? Okay.
How far? Almost all the way.
Attention, surfers, batten the hatches.
This just in: A swell of epic proportions spawned by a massive typhoon in the south seas is headed our way.
Waves expected to reach enormous heights that could match the fabled Big Monday swell of some 30 years past.
Stay tuned, surfers.
More info on Big Monday, the sequel, later.
Yow! Lifeguard! Lifeguard! Please, lifeguard! My baby, she's drowning! Hey, she's caught in a rip! Please help me! Oh, God! She's caught in a rip! Please help me, somebody! She's deaf! She won't be able to hear you! Please hurry.
Oh, God! I can't swim! Please let me go to her.
Please, let me go to her.
Is she all right? She's all right.
She's all right.
Okay, okay Lili.
Lili.
Okay, please.
Is she breathing? Lili, breathe.
Breathe for Mommy.
Let me through.
Lili, breathe.
Coming through.
Sweetheart, breathe.
Oh, my baby.
Why won't she breathe? Come on, baby.
Come on.
Yeah, that a girl.
That a girl.
Why won't she breathe? Okay, okay.
Oh, that's my girl.
Oh, Lili.
Lili.
Oh, sweetheart.
Mitch, are you all right? Yeah, I'm fine.
How long was she under? I don't know.
What do you mean? Someone else got to her first.
Who? I'm so sorry.
She must have wandered off.
Oh, it's okay, it's okay.
What is it, honey? Is this yours? No.
No, it's not hers.
Thank you.
Well, if it ain't the chicken of the sea.
What's the matter, chicken? Waves too big? Yeah, they are not.
Then why are you so far behind the break? I'm just waiting for a good set.
What, the one-footers? Don't worry, chicken.
Your daddy's a lifeguard.
He'll save you.
Hey, what's going on with you? I blew that rescue.
Mitch, a civilian happened to have been closer to the victim than you.
That's all.
Shauni, if someone hadn't yelled, I wouldn't have even seen her.
If that Hawaiian guy wasn't in the water she might have drowned.
Do you know who that guy was or where he came from? No.
He just surfaced, and he was holding her.
He looked like Kanaloa.
Like who? You know, Kanaloa.
It's a Hawaiian god.
Do you think that was his? The guy's, not the god's.
Little girl must have pulled it from around his neck.
So what happened, Mitch? Why did you miss that rescue? Did you ever hear of Big Monday? Yeah, I read about it, but it's kind of hard to imagine on this beach.
Shauni, it was 1961.
I was seven years old.
I was right here.
I can remember these huge waves but that's all I can remember.
And all of a sudden, today, when I heard on the radio from that disc jockey that another Big Monday was coming, I don't know, it triggered something.
Suddenly, I was seven years old again, standing on that beach, watching this huge wave about to come over me.
So do you think that's what distracted you? I don't know.
I do know one thing.
The thought of another Big Monday scares the hell out of me.
"Hank, the lifeguard says" she's going to be just fine.
Because they had to check her out.
Yes.
Yes.
We'll wait right here for you, sweetheart.
Bye.
Your name is Lili.
L- i-I-i.
Um, my husband took our other kids to his mother's.
He'll be back to pick us up in about an hour or so.
Oh, good.
That will give me more time to teach Lili her name.
I was showing here how to sign her name.
L- i-I-i.
That's your name.
Like I told you, Lili doesn't understand sign language.
If you would like her to learn, I have some friends that run a school, and they can teach your whole family to sign.
No.
Thank you.
We don't believe in that.
We want Lili to grow up normal, not have other people treat her as though she's different.
Mrs.
Seger, Lili "is" different, and that's not bad.
But she's deaf, and she needs a way to express to you what she thinks and how she feels and the things that she wants.
Learning sign language can just open up a whole new world for her.
But she's already learning languages like everyone else.
Lili, say "Thank you.
" Than Good girl.
You see? Mrs.
Seger, lip-reading and being able to speak, that's all wonderful, but that's really limited for her.
Why don't you let me drive you down to the school, so you can see what they're Mom! - What, honey? What is it? What do you want to tell me? What? What is it? " -Honey Lili, Lili, don't.
Don't Lili.
Lili, sweetheart Mrs.
Seger.
Lili Lili, no.
Lili, look at Mommy.
What's wrong? Mrs.
Seger.
Please.
I think I know what she wants.
Could I take her? Please? Okay.
Do you want to see the fish? Yeah.
Oh, you want to "feed" the fish.
We'll feed the fish.
Okay.
There we go.
And we got some food right here.
Here we go.
I'll open it.
Okay.
You know, Mrs.
Seger, if she knew sign language she would have been able to tell us exactly what she wanted to do.
She would have said, "I want to feed the fish.
" I know you love Lili a lot.
Please give her the chance to tell you how she feels about being deaf.
See you tomorrow, Hobe.
Hobie? Hey, Hobe? What's the matter? Nothing.
Come on, you can talk to me.
Sit down.
Come on.
What's going on? I'm a chicken.
Says who? Clay Billy everyone.
And they're right.
I am.
Since when? Last week.
I dropped into this wave, and it was hollow.
I was under for a really long time.
I just really sketched.
And ever since, I've been chicken to ride on a wave.
Listen, Hobie everybody gets scared sometimes, and anybody who tells you anything different is a liar.
You are gonna be back out there in no time at all.
You really think so? Definitely.
Um, Shauni? What? My dad's going out tonight.
Want to come over and watch some surfing videos? Yeah, I'd like that.
Eddie's not back yet from the lifeguard competition, so I am a free woman.
It'd be great.
Don't tell my dad.
I mean about me being scared and all.
Okay.
But, Hobie, I really think that you should.
I know your dad.
I know he'd understand.
No, he won't.
He's never been scared of anything.
Don't tell him, please? All right, but you remember what I said, Hobie.
Everybody gets scared sometimes.
Even your dad.
Yo, surfers! The countdown has begun.
The Weather Baron predicts that Big Monday, the sequel, will premiere on can you believe it? Monday morning, same day as before.
What a mind blower.
Déja vu all over again.
Yow! Surf's up! Yeah, he was out for six hours yesterday.
That's what I heard.
He's not a human being.
Hey, brudda.
Hey, Mitch, brudda! Let me down, let me down! I can't breathe.
I can't breathe.
You're too thin.
You're too thin.
You need some island food to fatten you up.
I see you haven't missed a meal in nine years.
Hey, what's with you? You come to town, you don't even call me.
So how you find me here? With the World Outrigger Championships next month, who else would lead the team after the Duke? Hey you have any idea who this belongs to? And where you find this? It was in the hand of a little girl I rescued or a little girl I helped rescue.
Well, that belong to Sonny Paalua, you know.
This belongs to the Duke's son? Maybe you and Sonny pulled together by the same tide, yeah? What does that mean? Here.
You take this out into the passage.
You paddle.
The answer will come to you.
Good morning.
Are we ready to say the pledge? Okay.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.
And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
That's great.
We're ready to begin our morning work and go to our work stations.
I want you to get ready.
Get ready for your speech, okay? We're going to do some speech work.
Very nice work.
Sign language is more than finger spelling and gestures.
It's about total visual communication, using mime, facial expression and body language.
A change of expression can alter the entire meaning of a sign.
It'd be all right if Lili joined the other children, wouldn't it, Dan? Sure, let her go explore.
Lili, behave, understand? Be have.
Dan, Sharon's afraid the signing will isolate Lili.
No, just the opposite.
It will help her feel much more a part of both the deaf and hearing communities.
What are those children over there doing? They're having a vocabulary lesson.
Many signs are really visual depictions of what they represent.
The Hawaiians have been doing it for centuries when they dance the hula.
And what about those children over there? They're learning how to modulate their voices.
Can you say "flower"? Try again.
"Flower.
" Flower.
"Flower.
" I think that's a good try.
Joanna, can you try that? Flower flower.
A little louder.
"Flower.
" Flower.
That's so-so.
Michael? Flower flower I hear no voice.
I think you can be stronger.
Flower! Not screaming.
"Flower.
" Flower.
Flow Can you say "flower"? "Flower.
" Say it again, Michael.
- Flower.
- Flow With a stronger voice.
Michael? No.
Lili, no, no.
Sharon, Sharon, it's all right, it's all right.
I'm sorry.
I knew this wasn't going to work.
Excuse me, please.
She was just frustrated.
She didn't understand.
I'm sorry.
Kaye, I'm sorry.
Oh, no.
Thank you.
Well, um, I guess I'll talk to you later.
Okay.
She doesn't know how to sign like you.
Flower.
Sonny, this belong to you? Thanks, brudda.
This means a lot to me.
I found that in the hand of the little girl you rescued.
Lucky for her you were there.
Yeah, but you save her if Sonny no swimming by, huh? Maybe.
I knew your father, you know.
Taught me a whole lot about the water.
It was his home.
Still is.
A lot of people will miss him, Sonny.
I know I will.
He made this for me.
Here, take it.
No.
I can't do that.
Wear it.
It'll help you.
Thanks, brudda.
Help me what? You ride your wave, bro.
One wave can come halfway around the world to you and never go away.
It stay right here.
You wear that till you one with the wave inside you.
Wow, look at that! Whoa, cool.
That was gnarly.
Look at his board.
That wave is a rocket launcher.
Think the waves on Big Monday will be as big as these? I hope not.
If they are, I'm going to surf them.
Oh, you want that to happen to you? Big Monday only comes once every 30 years.
I want to know what it feels like.
Well, did you ask your dad? What'd he say? He didn't want to talk about it.
Sharon, I understand how you feel.
Yesterday "was" difficult, but all I want to do is take Lili out for lunch for a couple of hours.
That's all.
Help I need some help.
I need help.
Dad.
Help.
Dad, get him.
Get him.
Dad, wake up.
Dad? Dad, you were having a nightmare.
What was it about? What were you scared of? It was a wave.
Really? I've been kind of scared of those, too.
I mean, surfing them.
You know? What do you do when you get scared of something you've always loved to do? Come here.
Well I think you just get back out there and do it again.
This helped me find my wave.
Well, as I say, there's always one you never forget as long as you live.
But I did forget this one.
Last night I remembered.
I was seven years old, standing on the beach.
This wave was breaking right in front of me.
It was huge.
So I turned and ran.
Another boy standing right next to me didn't.
When I turned back, I saw the wave breaking over right on top of him.
I just froze.
He drowned.
You were a boy.
Now you're a man.
You didn't know how to save no one then.
I could have tried, Clarence.
How many people, how many lives you save since then? I don't know.
Maybe a hundred.
A hundred people who live now because you never die then.
A hundred people.
And Hobie.
This is it, dudes and dudesses.
Big Monday has arrived.
Some beaches are already reporting eight-foot sets.
What'll be left in its wake, only Kanaloa knows for sure.
Morning, Dad.
What's for breakfast? Oatmeal.
Big day today.
Big Monday.
That's right.
What do you say you spend the day with your old man, huh? I kind of planned on going to the beach with my friends.
Aw, come on, pal, I could use your help.
Waves are gonna be outrageous we'll be pulling them out - like tuna.
- No, thanks.
Well, to tell you the truth, I miss you.
I would like to spend the day with my son, okay? You're scared to let me go to the beach by myself, aren't you? I don't want you going in the water today, that's for sure.
You told me to overcome my fears.
And what better time than today? Hobie, no.
Now, you want to go to the beach with your friends, that's fine.
But you see that? It stays here.
So where's your board, chicken? I'm not scared, Clay.
I'm just not stupid.
You don't have anything to prove either.
Clay, they're getting everybody out of the water.
Nobody will think you're chicken.
You better believe they won't.
Get a lifeguard here, now! We need a lifeguard! I want everybody kept out of the water.
Swimmers, surfers, everybody.
All right, you heard him let's get down there.
Okay.
Okay.
You got him? Just lie back down.
Took a lot of guts, what you did out there.
I'm real proud of you.
Don't ever forget what you did today, huh? Okay.
Look What did she say? She said, "I love you, Mommy.
" Oh Sonny thank you very much.
It worked.
But I don't need it anymore.
Hobie, this went from my father to me.
Now it goes from your father to you.
Thanks.
You give it to your son when he find his wave, huh? Sure.
You know, you told me that everybody has their own wave.
Well, the two of you will always be riding with me on mine.
Hey, hey, hey, you know, the Duke could not have said that any better.
What do you say, guys? Let's go out, huh? Let's go! All right, on three.
One, two, three!
