I remember coming out here once, on father's day with my dad.
I was 14 years old.
Grandpa tried surfing? No way.
He said he'd try it for me.
Wanted to see why I would get up before dawn to come out here.
So what happened? He didn't get it.
Paddle out, ride in, out, in, out, in.
What's the point? Ah, the feeling you get.
Grandpa didn't deal with his feelings too much, pal.
But we do, don't we? Ready to feel the rush? You bet! Dad, happy father's day.
Thanks, pal.
I'm glad I can spend it with you.
Outside! Let's go! All right! Yeah, dad! Yeah! Woo! What? What is it? Keep our beaches clean Logan? Logan? Hey! Logan? What was that about? I don't know.
I'll get right on it.
Thank you.
Matt, there's some rips pulling south of the jetty.
I want you to go out and back up Logan.
Give him some help out there, okay? Okay.
Hey, how'd it go last night? It didn't.
I thought your dad was flying in for father's day.
He said he was gonna stop by on his way back from France, but, uh, his meeting got pushed up and he didn't have enough time.
But he called from the plane and said to look up and wave.
Business before pleasure, huh? Business before everything.
That's my dad's lifelong motto.
Hey, but whatever makes the man happy.
Won't you come celebrate father's day with Mitch, and Hobie, and me? I mean, Mitch's mom's coming to dinner.
Hobie's cooking.
It'll be great.
I think I'll pass.
The last time Hobie cooked, my mouth was on fire for a week.
But thanks.
See ya.
Uh, Hobie, that, that was delicious.
Thanks.
It wasn't too spicy, was it? Oh, no, no.
No.
It was great.
What's for dessert? Ice cream.
Oh, thank god.
Jalapeno flavor.
Just kidding.
I got somethin' for ya, dad.
-Oh, isn't that nice.
-Oh, oh.
-Happy father's day.
-Thanks.
Hey, look at this.
A fish tie.
-It's a mackerel.
-Oh! I doesn't smell like a mackerel, thank goodness.
It's pure silk.
That's great, Hobie.
It goes with my shirt, huh? Thanks, pal.
I'll wear it.
I have something for your dad, as well.
I was cleaning out your father's closet last month and I found this in the bottom of a drawer.
Father's day 1988? What's in here? Well, it's something your father obviously wanted to give you on that father's day, but, you know, for some reason, he never did.
I thought you might like to open it now.
Father's day 1988 go on, dad, open it.
Yeah, Mitch, open it.
I wanna see what's inside.
No, no, no.
Is your name on here? -No.
-Okay.
Okay, just leave me alone.
I'll open it when I'm ready.
What do you see when you look into the fire? Something in my memory.
As soon as I try to focus, it goes away.
What does it start out as? Fire.
Flame.
What do you feel? Fear.
What? Logan, what is it? I don't know.
When I start thinking about it, all I see is the fire.
You don't have to be afraid.
You don't have to be afraid of anything.
We were suppose to work out together this morning.
Yeah, I know.
I'm sorry.
Hey, you haven't opened this yet, huh? No.
Well, look at this.
This was 1988.
This was buried in my dad's closet since 1988.
Why didn't he give it to me then? Well, maybe if you open it up, you'll find out.
Look, I'll open it.
No.
No.
What are you afraid is in there? Stephanie, this says, "to Mitch, my son, with love and respect.
Dad.
" He never called me son.
He never signed anything to me with love and respect.
It was always happy birthday, dad.
Merry Christmas, dad.
Well, then, it must be something very special.
So just open it.
Yeah, I better wait 'til after work.
I can't afford to be less than a hundred percent focused.
And I have a feeling that whatever's in here is gonna be distracting, to say the least.
You sure you don't want me to open it? Just thought I'd ask.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hey, Mitch.
Woo.
Mitch! Do you mind droppin' me at my tower? -No problem.
-I'm only a tad bit late.
Sorry.
So how is your father's day? I don't know, yet.
How is yours? I didn't know my dad and I'm not one, as far as I know.
So it's not a day I celebrate.
Two-nine-five to two-one-seven Lincoln, please respond.
Code three to tower 18 Malibu.
Boat outside surf line.
Ten-four, two-nine-five.
This is two-one-seven l, in route.
Let's go.
Help! Help! All right, take the paddle board.
Just hurry up! Help! - Leave it! - Okay.
Logan, move it! Let's go! Help! Help! In here! In here! He's stuck.
We can't get him out.
Los Angeles county lifeguard Baywatch my son's in there! It's okay! It's okay! I'll go get him! Go on! My baby! My son's in there! Our baby! It's okay! It's okay! It's okay! Our baby's in there! -My baby! -Logan, what are you doing? Mitch! I'm going back in! Mitch! Get out! Get out! Logan, wake up! Mitch, hurry up! Get out! Logan, wake up! Go get the baby! Logan, wake up! Mitch! Get out! Hurry up! Please! Someone rescue my baby? Mitch! Mitch, get out! Hurry! -Hurry up! -Oh, my god! Logan, wake up! Scarab one, please report our rescue status, over.
There he is! There he is! There he is! -There he is! There he is! -You got him.
All right, Mitch! Logan, wake up! Go get the baby! Mitch, here.
Give him to me.
-You all right? -Yeah, I'm all right.
What was goin' on with you out there? Nothing.
-You were freaked.
Why? -It's none of your business.
If I can't count on you in a rescue, then it becomes my business.
I want an answer.
Yeah? Well, so the hell do I.
You okay? No, not very.
I spoke to Matt.
You wanna talk about it? I was paddling out to the boat.
Then, all of a sudden, it was like I was somewhere else.
Some other fire, some other place.
Another boat.
I saw it in my head like it was right there in front of me.
You have no idea where these thoughts are coming from? They're coming from in here.
Where else do think? I think that it's a memory.
I think that's it's something that happened to you a long time ago and it's being trigger now because of the fire.
Something too painful to remember, is that it? So I'm burying it in my brain? I know somebody who could help you figure it out, if that's what happened.
A headshrinker? Is that what I need? He's a hypnotist.
I could call to make an appointment.
Hey, dad.
So what was in it? Uh, I don't know, yet.
Well, you know, I thought that we might as well all be together, you know.
Oh, but he didn't make it for us.
He made it for you, Mitch.
Made it? You know what's in here, don't you? Of course I do.
Don't you think I knew everything about your father, and he knew everything about me? When you open this, you're going to find, you know, a lot more about your father than you thought.
All right.
Mitchell Buchannon.
Lifeguard.
Oh, no way! Grandpa made a scrapbook of you as a lifeguard? Oh, not just a scrapbook.
Oh, see.
Isn't it beautiful the way it's laid out and mounted? And there's a sense of design and continuity that your grandfather invested in everything he created.
Isn't it wonderful? Darling, what's the matter? Doesn't make any sense.
But darling-- dad didn't want me to be a lifeguard.
But his feelings changed.
You know that.
Not 'til the end, mom.
Not 'til the end.
Did you do this or did he? It was your father's idea and it's his work.
Oh, why, he'd sit up sometimes until 3:00 in the morning at night, just cutting out the right border to frame a rescue card with your name on it.
Why? Because he was proud of you.
-He was never proud of me.
-Dad.
He was very proud of you, Mitch.
Then why didn't he tell me? -Because he couldn't.
-Why not? He didn't want to encourage you.
Encourage me? What are you talkin' about? Al was very proud to be your father.
He'd show this book to everyone and he'd say, "that's my son.
" "He's a brilliant lifeguard now, but someday, he's going to be an even more brilliant architect.
" "And when that day comes, I'm going to give him this book so he'll have some beautiful memories of his days on the beach.
" My medal of valor.
Rescue card.
And my patches.
Ah, here we go.
My promotion.
That's why he stopped in 1988.
Why? Because that was the year I made the decision to become a full time lifeguard lieutenant.
And the year that dad finally gave up his dream of me being an architect.
He loved you, Mitch.
I know he did, mom.
I know that.
I just-- I just wish he'd given it to me then, you know.
Don't remember his faults, Mitch.
Remember his love.
Now focus your entire concentration on the flame.
Now let your eyes slowly close.
Continue focusing on the internal image of the flame as you fall deeper and deeper asleep.
Now, I want you to let your thoughts drift back in time.
Back to a time before the fire.
Daddy, daddy, wait for me.
Daddy! Daddy, daddy, wait for me.
Can I come with? Daddy! Daddy, can I come with? Okay.
Here.
Hold on to this for me in case I need it.
Fowler One, two, three.
Open your eyes.
Yeah, let's go in.
Restricted area keep out Let's make a take off ramp.
But your dad's waiting for us at the beach.
Nah, he's fishin'.
Doesn't notice anything when he's fishin'.
Come on.
Just a couple of jumps.
Mark! Mark! Mark, are you okay down there? Mark, say something! Mark! Feel better? Ah, I dunno how I feel.
Learning about my dad like that.
The way he died.
Logan, your dad died a hero.
I know.
And I didn't even remember him.
And given the opportunity to be like him, I just froze.
But you didn't.
You went into the boat just like he did.
And you risked your life to save a stranger.
That's what we do.
We're lifeguards.
Hmm.
But dad was a lot like you.
Well, if you're lookin' for a father figure, forget it.
I've already got one defiant rebel on my hands.
Nah, I've got a father now.
I just gotta find out more about who he was.
Yeah.
Expect surprises.
Mister Howard! Mister Howard! Mister Howard! Mister Howard! Mister Howard! -What? What do you want? -Mark fell in a hole up there.
-Where? Where? -Up here! Let's go! Come on, everybody back.
Come on.
Mark! Mark, it's dad! Can you hear me? Mark, can you here me? It's dad! -Mark! Mark! -Come on, step back.
We don't want two of you guys down there.
You didn't see the sign? What were you thinking? Sorry.
He's not moving.
He's gotta be at least 20 feet down there.
Lower me down.
I'll get him.
No, no, no.
I'll get him.
The hole's too narrow.
-You won't fit.
-I'll get him.
Hook me up.
Here's a jumpsuit.
-He's alive.
-He's still alive, isn't he? Yeah, he's still alive, don't worry.
We'll get him out.
Okay, everything set? Everything's set.
-All right, let's do it.
-Anything I can do to help? Yeah, just feed me some line there.
All right.
Okay.
Further.
All right.
Further.
A little further.
Keep going.
Okay.
I see him.
All right.
Okay, there.
Stop.
He's got a pulse.
Mark! Mark! How you doin', mate? You okay? Can you move your arms and legs? Yeah? Can you move them? He seems to be okay.
Okay, grab my hand.
Grab my hand.
-Okay, you all right? -Yeah.
Okay, grab my wrist.
Take you up nice and slow.
Take me up! All right, let's bring him up real slow.
Here we go.
Hold on.
That's a boy.
Ah! Hey! Are you all right? You all right? Grab my hand! Grab my hand! It's okay.
Keep pulling! I see him.
I got him.
Here he comes.
Here we go.
He's okay, Mitch.
Way to go, Logan.
Your dad would be proud.
Are you all right? Are you okay? -Thanks! -It's all right.
-Thanks.
-It's all right.
Oh, it's a scrapbook.
No, no, no, no, look.
It's much more than just a scrapbook.
Look at the way everything's laid out.
The mounting's just perfect, huh? The sense of design and continuity, I mean, that's stuff my dad was good at.
Oh, this is so great.
Your dad must've been so proud of you to do this.
Look, look, look.
My first rescue card, huh.
Isn't that awesome? The way he put in a tower and the sun-- hey, don't touch it! -Sorry.
-Get your fingerprints on it.
What are you, crazy? I'm clean.
I know it's late in Paris, mom, but um, this phone call's a couple days late, and I wanted to wish dad a happy father's day.
Thanks.
Papa? So what did your mom say when you told her that you remembered? That she was relieved and sorry.
But that after the explosion, I blocked the whole thing out.
Says she told everybody never to ever mention it to me again.
As I got older, I guess I blocked out all memories of my father completely.
Did she tell you about him? Yeah.
She's sending me a trunk of all of his old stuff.
How does that make you feel? Nervous, a little.
But I'm looking forward to knowing him.
Sometimes we forget the most important moments of our childhood.
Mom said I was three when dad first brought me to the beach.
She said I was so scared of the waves I wouldn't get off his shoulders.
So what'd he do? Well, she said he walked out into the water 'til it was above his head and held me there until I stopped cryin'.
After that, loved the ocean.
I hope I always remember these times we spend together, dad.
Then, what do you say we make it memorable? All right! Let's go! Woo! All right! -Yeah! Oh, yeah! -Whoa! -Hang on.
-All right, I gotcha.
You and me, pal.
-Whoa! -It's you and me.
