He's out cold.
-He stinks of alcohol.
Well, let's wake him up.
-Be careful.
Most of these guys are harmless, but you never know.
-Hey, buddy.
Come on, time to wake up.
-Oh my god.
It's John.
-Cort.
-John, it's me.
It's C.
J.
C.
J.
Hey, sweet thing.
How you doin'? Hey, give me a little kiss, huh? -John, don't.
-Come on, come on.
-Come on, you're drunk.
You're embarrassing yourself.
Matt's here.
-Well, he's not here for me 'cause I can't see him.
I only have eyes for you, dear.
-Knock it off, Cort.
- Or what? Come on! Take your best shot, huh.
I'll break you in half.
- Oh god.
-Could you find him some clothes, please? - Oh, I look best in royal blue.
-Why don't you find some clothes? I don't feel comfortable with you takin' off his clothes.
-Oh, guys.
-Are you kidding? This is hardly a romantic situation.
-Oh, C.
J.
, it's very romantic.
-He needs us.
I can't turn my back on him right now.
-Oh.
Terrible! -Shut up! -Don't worry.
I'm in love with you.
I'm not in love with Cort, okay? -Oh, come on, C.
J.
-it's not an issue.
-You're in love with me.
-Cut it out! Ah.
C.
J.
-This is about your eyesight, isn't it? How bad has it gotten? -Well, it's really not a problem.
I'm looking forward to my new career selling pencils.
-You don't have to be sarcastic, John.
I'm just tryin' to help you.
-Then throw me a party.
You can all hang out and watch me go blind.
I'll tell ya when the lights have gone out so you know when to pop the champagne.
-It sounds like fun.
-Oh, you don't wanna help me, C.
J.
I'll only bring you down.
Everything I touch turns to crap.
Just stay away from me.
-I can't.
I can't stand back and watch someone I really care about self destruct.
Why aren't you wearing these? -To hell with them.
I'd rather go blind.
-Why are you doing this? -All right, Hobe-ster! -Hey! -Well, you're the only guy I know who comes to work on his day off.
- What a beautiful girl.
How can you stay away from the beach on a day like today? -Mitch, I'd like to introduce you to a very good friend of mine.
Nicholas, this is Mitch Buchannon.
-Hey, Nick.
Nice to meet ya.
-Same here.
Can I go down to the water now? -Oh, sure.
Yeah.
Just be careful.
- Step into my office.
What's he got? -Leukemia and the chemotherapy's not working.
He's gonna need a bone marrow transplant.
-Wow.
How'd you get involved? -I do volunteer work with the hospice where Nick is living.
His parents died about a year ago in a car accident and he had been living in a foster home up until he started his chemotherapy treatments.
The doctor says his chances are pretty good if the surgery is successful.
Look at the little guy.
He should be thinkin' about baseball, not the latest advancement in cancer treatments.
I don't know how he keeps his spirits up.
-You know, if he can swim all right, Hobie and I can get him up on a boogie board.
-Oh, he'd be thrilled.
-Are you ready? -Okay.
-Here comes a good one.
Ready? Okay, hold on.
All right, here it comes.
-All right.
Go, go, go, go, go! -Man, it really bums me out when I see a kid like Nick.
-It should make you sad, pal.
It should also make you realize how lucky you are.
-Yeah.
-All right.
Woo! Thankful for a smile from a friend Amnesia for a while let's pretend It's the time of our lives don't you know forever I will stand beside you together we'll fight holding hope I'll savor every moment with you Choosing to believe I will try Never looking back asking why It's the time of our lives don't you know forever I will stand beside you together we'll fight holding hope I'll savor every moment with you Let the sea come wash away all of our doubts with the waves everything's perfect today -Hey, guys! Have fun.
I'm goin' in! - Okay.
- Come on, let's go.
-I thought you said this was his day off.
-Why, what's wrong? -I'm not ready for this.
What's goin' on with him? - I found him under my tower, drunk.
He's been living on the street.
He's a mess.
I think his rp has gotten a lot worse.
Seems like he's lost all hope.
Maybe you can get through to him.
I couldn't.
-Thanks.
-Hey.
-I already know what you're gonna say, so don't waste your breath.
-Well, I was wonderin' how long it'd take you to hit the skids.
-What, did you guys have a pool going? -Why'd you come back? -Thought I had some friends here.
-You do.
John, I'll always be here for you.
I'll offer you anything you want.
Food, money, place to stay, you name it.
-I don't want anything from you.
-Except pity.
Hey, don't get me wrong, pal.
You deserve your fair share.
Believe me, I wouldn't wanna be in your shoes.
But you're not the only one who caught a bad break in this world.
See that little guy out there surfin' with Hobie? He's 10 years old.
He'll need a miracle to make it to 11.
-Why? -He's dying of leukemia.
-John, he is dying.
Kinda puts things in perspective, doesn't it? -Yeah.
Yeah.
-Buy you a pot of coffee? - A cup will be just fine.
-Hit the winch and bring it up.
We're done.
Hey.
What's wrong? -Hospital called.
Nick is gonna need that operation.
-Oh, poor little guy.
-Yeah.
-When do they need me? -As soon as possible.
-Is there something I can help you with? -As a matter of fact, there is.
You see, there's something of value that I've lost and I want you to find it.
-Sorry, I'm booked.
- No, you're not.
-I don't understand.
-Well, maybe this will help you understand.
-Mhmm.
Mhmm.
Yes.
Yes, I'll do whatever I can.
Let me know as soon as you hear from them.
Okay, thanks.
-Hey, kaye! Look what the cat dragged in.
What's wrong? -Nicky's doctor just called and his brother Jamie's supposed to be the bone marrow donor and they can't find him, or his wife.
-They just disappeared? Just like that? -It looks like he went on a dive, but nobody knows for sure.
Mitch, if Nicky doesn't get his transplant, he's not gonna make it.
-Thanks.
Garner says he can't do anything until a missing person's report is filed.
-Then, it's another 48 hours before they can get on the case, right? -Yeah.
-Nicky doesn't have that long and it's too late to join a donor's club.
-How well do you know Jamie? -I know that he works down in San Pedro and he and his wife own a marine salvaging company.
-Well, you spent a lot of time in San Pedro.
You know the docks like the back of your hand.
What do you say we check it out? -Mitch, I can barely see the back of my hand.
-You may not be able to help yourself here, but maybe you can help a little kid.
-Okay, I'll do it.
On one condition.
-What? -You let me drive.
- Yeah, right.
Don't worry.
We'll find him.
-Thanks.
Good luck.
-I can drive, trust me.
-Yeah, like I'm gonna let you drive my car, right.
-Why not? -Can't even see the back of your hand.
-So? Tell me when to turn.
-Hello? Anybody home? -What, are we just gonna stand here? -What are you suggesting? -I'm suggesting we break that padlock.
After all, you wanna see what's inside there, don't ya? -Just hang on a minute, power ranger.
Why don't we go around back and see if there's a window somebody opened? -Come on.
This'll take two seconds.
Hey, grab that spike there.
-All right.
Put it right there.
All right, hold it steady.
- Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Wait a minute.
You're the one who's legally blind.
You hold the spike.
-That would probably work better.
-Yes.
Yes! -Get in.
-Wow.
-A lot of junk, huh? -Yeah.
Ow! Hey.
Check this out.
I should probably get one of these to keep from hurtin' my head every time I bang it.
-Here's a calendar.
And no work schedule 'til the end of next week.
What else we got here? -You know, we could spend all day here and not find anything to go on.
I hope you realize that.
-Looks like they buy most of the their equipment at south bay diving supply.
They might know somethin'.
-Let's check it out.
-Yeah.
Jamie showed up here this mornin'.
Uh, bought a lift bag.
Two guys were with him.
Kinda lookin' over his shoulder, if you know what I mean.
-You know these guys? -No, I never seen 'em before.
You know, but come to think of it, Jamie seemed a little bit jumpy, like he'd had one too many cappuccinos.
They paid in cash and split.
-Do you know where they were diving? -Uh uh.
They didn't say.
Gees, I hope he's okay.
-Yeah, so do we.
Look, if you think of anything else, here's my card.
Give me a call.
- All right.
Lifeguard.
Must be a great job.
-Most of the time.
- Hi.
- Hi.
-There's been a rip in this area all morning.
I thought I'd let you know.
-Thanks.
-So how's Cort? -Better, I think.
Helping that little boy has given him something positive to focus on.
-You're still in love with him, aren't you? -No.
-Do me a favor.
Look me in the eye when you say that.
-Why don't you believe me? What would happen if summer came back and she was sick? -I don't know.
Let me think about it.
I'm somewhere in the middle of this heartbreak yeah feels like ages since that fire lit my heart but before it burned out it left a trace of gold to say that you love me puts me right back into agony but you just never will see you say that you love me oh that your falling apart you say that you love me oh that your falling apart - because I can't let go I'm somewhere in the middle of this heartbreak somewhere in the middle of this heartbreak yeah I got caught between the rocks and hearts no where to go and I can feel it in my bones you say that you want me back to the way we that used to be but you just never will see how can you ever ask this thing of me? Can you give yourself? I know you said it but you once were mine well you said it I'm judge, court and jury and I can't let go a verdict can't give me what I want to know if you only knew all the hurt that its doing its in my bones, yeah you say that you love me ohh I'm falling apart - you say that you love me woah I'm falling apart because I can't let go I'm somewhere in the middle of this heartbreak -Excuse me.
-Yeah? -Why are you swinging that baseball bat? -Well, I'm a baseball player.
-But why did you bring it here to the beach? -Well, I'm trying to keep my swing sharp while we're on strike.
-Oh.
Just don't hit anybody.
-Help! Over here! - Excuse me.
- Help! Somebody help me! -Grab the can.
I know the water's shallow, but it's still dangerous.
You're in a very strong rip current.
-Yeah, it is strong! -No matter how hard I try, it keeps pulling me back.
-I know exactly how you feel.
-Thanks.
-You're welcome.
You okay? -Yeah.
Hey.
Aren't you Mike piazza? -Yeah.
What's your name? -Watch his feet, watch his feet.
-Let's get him out of this thing.
-Well? - I found the wreck.
-Excellent.
And the cargo? -Scattered all around the bottom.
Your crates broke open.
-Fortunately, the cocaine is wrapped in waterproof packages.
-Look, it's gonna take me a while to bring all that stuff up.
Plus, it's gonna be dark soon.
I can't make another dive until morning.
-That's not the only problem.
You hear that? -Yeah, so what? -The compressor.
It's not running right.
Sounds like it's about ready to give out.
Better have some air tanks ready to go, just in case.
-All right, in the morning, we'll take her in.
But if she's followed, you die.
-Oh, he caught it.
Double play.
-Hey.
How's he doin'? -He's exhausted.
Did you have any luck? -Not enough.
-Mitch, people don't just vanish into thin air.
I mean, something must have happened to them.
Jamie would never desert his little brother.
-Kaye, don't worry.
The guy will turn up.
We'll get the word out on the street.
If you want, I'll rearrange my schedule so we can go back to the docks tomorrow morning.
-Mitch, I'm sorry I just snapped at you.
I mean, it's not your fault.
You're doing more than anybody could ever ask.
It's just that every time I look at Nicky, it breaks my heart.
-Matt is convinced that I'm still in love with you.
-Are you? -I didn't think so.
I've worked really hard on trying to get over you.
Every time you roll in and out of my life, you leave me wondering what hit me.
And then, the last time that you left, that's when Matt happened.
-Oh, I was such a fool.
You know, C.
J.
, I was wondering if um C.
J.
? C.
J.
? There you are.
-I'm sorry.
What were you saying? -I was just thinkin' that um -What? John.
Talk to me.
-Look, I know I was rude yesterday and I just wanna thank you for always being there for me.
-Hey, Cort! The dive shop owner just called.
Jamie's there right now with those strange two guys.
Let's move! -I gotta go.
-Here you go, guys.
That's them.
-I'll take care of this.
-You're a thing of beauty.
-Who are you guys? -Friends of kaye Morgan.
-You must be Anna.
-Where's Jamie? -We were kidnapped by some drug smugglers.
They forced him to dive for a lost shipment of coke.
-I'll get the coast guard on it.
-No, you can't.
They'll kill Jamie.
These guys are crazed.
They see a coast guard or anyone, they'll kill him.
-Aren't you gonna eat anything? -Chemotherapy makes me sick sometimes.
-I don't get it, man.
I mean, if it's supposed to make you better, why does it make you feel so bad? -My doctor said it's sorta like a little war going on inside me.
-You ever get scared? -Sometimes.
-Are you scared right now? -Not really.
I have a feeling something good's gonna happen.
-Who's ready for dessert? -No, thanks.
-No? Are you sure? How about you, Hobie? -Uh, yeah, I guess.
-Have you heard from my brother? -No.
Not yet, but we will.
Hobie's father's lookin' for him right now.
-Nicky, are you okay? -I'm sorry.
-No, no.
That's okay.
-Nicky.
Nicky, look at me.
I'm gonna have to call the doctor.
Now, we might have to go to the hospital.
-I'm okay.
I'm fine.
Please don't call.
Excuse me.
-Where are you goin'? -I need to go to the bathroom.
-Where the hell are they? So what do you think I should do? -First of all, you need to lighten up.
You're blowing this way outta proportion.
The fact is, if C.
J.
really loved Cort, then she would've ran off with him by now.
-Yeah, but this guy never gives up.
He knows she's a sucker for his helpless little boy act.
-She can see through all that.
Your problem is you just don't give her enough credit.
-Have you guys seen Nick? He never came back from the bathroom.
-What? -Yeah, I dunno.
I think he just took my boogie board and split.
-He's not strong enough to be in the water by himself! -I'll call it in.
-Hobie, you know the beach real well.
Please help me.
-All right.
-Here, wait.
Grab a bike.
We can get a really good view from the bike path.
-Woo ha! -I don't see him.
He couldn't have gone that far.
Not in his condition.
-Come on.
Let's just keep going.
-Oh my god! There he is! Go, Hobie! Go, Hobie! Go! -Nick! -Here we come! Nicky! -Got him.
-Just lay him down right here.
-He's unconscious! -Turn him over! Turn him over! -You're gonna be all right, man.
- Okay, lay him down.
Hold his head.
We gotta get him to the hospital! Now! That's our boat.
-I think maybe you should get out there where they can see you.
-You ready? -Yeah.
Seems like old times, doesn't it? Let's hope we're not gettin' older, we're getting better; applies to ex Navy seals.
Come on.
-What is it? -Just a fisherman.
They shoulda been back by now.
Something's not right.
-I don't like this.
Something has happened to them.
Let's get outta here! Here, cut our friend loose.
-Hey! -Ah! Are you guys okay? -They cut Jamie's air hose.
-What? -How deep is he? -About 100 feet.
-He's got about a minute and a half until he suffocates.
-All right.
I'm goin' after him.
Just keep feedin' me slack, huh.
Good luck.
-Come on.
-Do you see them? -Nope.
-There.
There they are.
Doctor hagar to or.
Doctor hagar to or.
Kaye? -Yes, sweetheart? -Thanks for taking me to the beach.
I'll never forget it.
-Oh, we'll go again.
Okay? As soon as you're better.
-Hey, little brother.
-Jamie.
-Thank you.
Oh, hey.
How did his surgery go? -I can't answer all your questions at once.
The surgery went without a hitch.
I see no reason why the bone marrow transplant won't hold.
Nicholas has an excellent chance for full recovery.
- Terrific! - That's great! - All right! - Thank you.
-From what kaye tells me, you gentlemen deserve much of the credit for saving Nicholas's life.
-Yeah.
And for Jamie and mine, too.
-Thanks for bringing me along, old buddy.
-My pleasure.
-I have a patient to see.
Bye bye.
- Bye bye.
- Thank you.
-I personally wanna say thank you.
Thank you very much.
- It's okay.
- Hey, what about me? I was a part of this, too.
-Yes.
Thank you very much.
- Right there, right there.
Thank you.
-Why do you always get the same thing? Huh, why do you do that? Oh, I have a present for you.
-A present? You shouldn't have.
I didn't.
-It's from C.
J.
here it is.
-Oh, you're so funny.
Uh oh.
-Put 'em on.
-Oh, Mitch.
Come one, you know I can't see with these things on.
-You can't see without 'em.
-Does this mean I can drive now? -No, you can't drive now.
-Why not? -So John D.
Cort rides off into the sunset once again.
Why didn't you go with him? -He didn't ask me.
He knew better.
He understood my feelings for you.
-I thought about what you said.
About if summer came back and she was sick.
And you were right.
I know I'd help her any way I could.
I'm glad you helped Cort.
And I'm glad that summer hasn't come back.
-Good.
