Between Two Worlds (2020) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

1
What if we convinced Phillip
that he had Danny Grey's heart?
I have enlisted Sandra
in a scheme.
Meet Danny Grey and his family.
(Phillip) I need a way
into their lives.
- You want to meet them?
- Without causing questions.
Let me guess - the Walford Foundation
for Transplant Research?
Or some variation thereof.
(Bella) "The Walford Foundation
cordially invites
Sophia and Bella Grey to be
their very special guests."
I'm going.
For Danny.
So if we can put our issue aside
for the night.
Gives me hope.
No, that's why I'm here.
So it doesn't.
I've been to see Dr Nazim.
He said he can improve me.
It's facial reconstruction,
breasts,
and then later, fillers.
This is ridiculous!
You can't say things like that
about your father.
(Georgia)I'm imagining Welles
dead.
(Mikael) How about
a perfect living death?
Friday night, Welles will be
at a charity do.
The photos
to blow his world apart.
(Cate) It's the first gown
Phillip's bought me in years.
Why do you think I hated so much
what he became?
I never stopped loving
who he was.
(Phillip) Congratulations
on that Singapore deal.
I'm jealous.
- Hello, lovely to see you.
- Hi.
Liz, looking as gorgeous as ever.
Now, you make sure you keep
that credit card handy.
(Liz laughs)
(Cate) Whatever change has led
to his choosing my dress again
for the first time
in 20 years
it's the sort of change
that the Greys' influence
might possibly embed.
And where might that lead?
I have Julian. What's wrong with me?
Am I reading too much
into the dress?
The dress is beautiful.
Thank you.
(Phillip) Mm.
You chose it?
I thought I'd revive the custom.
So, there's conscious sentiment?
Conscious?
- Yes.
- After 20 years, I wasn't sure.
You haven't lost your eye.
Fashion might have changed,
your taste hasn't.
Surprised you noticed.
It was a lovely gesture.
Can't have you
letting the side down.
Take the compliment.
It raised thoughts
of happier times.
(whispers) Sophia and Bella Grey
are here.
Thank you.
Excuse me.
Mrs Grey? I'm Phillip Walford.
I'm thrilled you could come.
- And you must be Bella?
- Mm-hm.
We've much to discuss,
but later.
Come, meet my family.
What are you up to?
What's that all about?
-You're meant to be at Welles'
waiting for him to leave.
I'll know he has
when he arrives.
Who are those two?
-I have no idea.
-If you wanna get
on Walford's good side,
get on theirs.
They're important to him,
trust me.
Well, hello!
From the gym, I think. Mikael?
Fancy seeing you here.
I sailed in
on the skirts of a client.
I really should get back to her.
(Rebecca) Mm.
- He's gorgeous.
- Behave.
I'd like to get the chance
not to.
- I mean with them.
- Ah.
Oh, I'm so sorry, but we'll have
to schmooze the logjam.
The others are over by the dais.
You've all lost loved ones
and given others hope.
Sandra.
Champagne, some rather special
speeches, and a lovely meal.
And someone you know
is already here.
Of course.
(Sandra) This way.
- It was lovely to meet you all.
- And you.
- She seemed perfectly nice.
- She did.
If that lot can't get this lot
opening their wallets,
nothing will.
Rafe, you're looking well.
Smooth as silk,
if I didn't know.
If the Greys did
All to get close to them.
(Sandra) Dutch courage, ladies.
We had no idea
we've a role to play.
You all do. Introductions.
(Bella) Are you ready for it?
She promised
to at least be polite.
You're screwing with me?
Welles is a man of habit.
He likes overcoats,
even in summer.
Keys go in the pocket, always.
It'll save me the work
of breaking in
without leaving tracks.
What if they're not still there?
- They will be.
- You should have warned me.
It's fun seeing you off kilter.
This is not a game.
We wait for him to cloak it.
You should be there
seeing if the housekeeper stays.
I go in either way.
Upside, the alarms are off
if she's home.
Balances out having to
circumnavigate her.
Total ninja.
So, how are you going to "ninja"
your way around him?
That's where you come in.
I see you made it.
I'm surprised I was invited.
God's blessing
never goes astray.
I bless this cause while
you block generosity to ours.
I could start the flow again.
So, I'm here
to kowtow for crumbs?
- I could just turn around.
- Lose any kudos you might get
from softening
my steely resolve?
I dance to your tune on a maybe?
Isn't that what you lot do
every day with God?
I trust he thaws out your heart.
That new one he gave you.
I tell you what
why don't you get out there
and bang my drum for this
and I might feel benevolent?
And possibly not.
Worth a punt.
Mrs Walford.
Hello.
What?
(Phillip) I don't notice
him leaving.
(Cate) Why is he here?
Or is it just cat and mouse?
Ooh.
Memories of what I did to him
might be floating around still.
His presence shows an amity.
Should help others
not take sides
when considering what to donate.
Well, looks like we're done.
Excuse me.
Perfect conversation starter
for him and Georgia.
- Mutual loathing of Welles.
- What's hers about?
But you do know?
Yes.
(Cate) They're
charmingly simple.
Simple in the nice sense
of the word.
- Is that patronising?
- A touch.
(sighs) The heart lie exists
to place Phillip closer
to gentler souls.
Is it wrong to state
that's what they are?
They seem warm.
- That's better than
- You've started to prattle.
I know, it's nerves.
There's a lot at stake.
I wanted a moment alone
before my speech
to give you time
to make a decision.
Ah.
There she is.
(soft emotive music)
Sit, please.
(Phillip) Fine for drinks?
- Yes.
- Good.
So here you all are.
The women in Danny Grey's life.
I want your approval
to immortalise him.
(dark music)
Ready?
I take it back,
I'm glad you came.
This is fun.
(winces) Ah!
- Are you OK?
- My heel caught.
- Oh.
- There?
(attendant) Hm.
- (Georgia groans)
- Is that feeling OK?
It's really sore.
(soft rattling)
There are doctors here.
Oh, just keep rubbing it.
I don't wanna bother anyone.
It's starting to feel better.
That's it. That's the plan.
Well?
Mm.
Why not others? Why us?
I don't mean to sound
ungrateful.
No, you don't.
Danny had it all.
Youth, vibrancy, love,
family, skill.
But he sold drugs.
- That doesn't worry you?
- You can't let it go, can you?
(Sophia) He did.
He must know.
You did your research -
you must.
The public love a hero.
They love a flawed one even more
and they love a family
who'd stand behind one.
I sense a rift between you.
This might help it heal.
It's not your business.
Marti.
If I'm presuming too much,
I apologise.
Sandra, perhaps
What did you say in the park,
when you agreed to come tonight?
I said a lot of things.
You know the one I mean.
Martina: I'll be there for him.
Not for anyone else - him.
(Sandra) If you can come tonight
for Danny,
despite what you feel
for Mrs Grey
can you consider shelving that
to give his death
greater purpose?
(Bella) Please, Marti.
(Phillip) So, you'd like
to see him honoured?
- Of course.
- Mrs Grey?
Only if Martina agrees.
We have wounds to heal and
there'd be no hope
if I overrode her again.
You'd put that ahead
of your son being celebrated?
I put the living
before the dead.
That's what Danny would expect.
Then it seems the choice
is yours, Martina.
Wherever his organs are,
whoever has them
this will guarantee that
his donation is remembered
even if the recipients never
know the significance to them.
(Sophia cries)
- (sobs) Sorry.
- It's alright.
(Sophia sniffs)
It's brought the loss back.
(Sophia sighs) I am touched
by what you've offered,
but I wouldn't force you
into agreeing.
You couldn't if you tried.
It's my decision.
It's alright.
(cries) I just want my son to be
remembered for the good he did.
And he should be.
(exhales sharply)
Do it.
Thank you.
(dramatic music builds slowly)
Thank you.
(TV plays in background)
(tense music)
(man on TV) ..something that
the owners of this house
might accept.
(woman on TV) They had actually
lived in another one of yours,
a lighthouse
not far away from here,
which most people would go,
"A lighthouse-themed home?"
(Man) Well, the important thing
about that one was the
(piano music in background,
chatter)
(Liz) Julian, darling.
Making an entrance.
- Late surgery.
- No show without you.
After all you did for Phillip.
I thought you'd chosen wisely.
I decided I was more conspicuous
in my absence than my presence.
You won't get out of
being up there with him.
- I'll try.
- He'll insist.
And then we should talk.
Anything particular?
Outside, afterwards.
He's won, hasn't he?
I don't know why or how,
but he has.
Later, please.
What's his hold?
I do love you.
I didn't lie.
He's glad you're here.
Please, we're gathering
the troops.
For the cause, not him.
He knows that.
One of the ironies of my life
is that it took nearly dying
to appreciate it.
And it took someone else dying
to allow that to happen.
To my discredit, I took my new
lease of life for granted.
Initially.
I'm not proud of that,
but I was too busy recovering
to think, "Why am I here?"
It is thanks to the skills
of a number of people,
including my then cardiologist,
Julian Lee.
Thank you, Julian.
(applause)
Sadly, my transplant surgeon
is overseas,
or he's saying so.
I wasn't an easy patient.
But then, I'm not an easy man.
(laughter)
I'm here tonight - we all are
to honour the losses
suffered by some
so that others may live
fuller lives,
that some like me
might live at all.
People like those behind
and beside me.
It is to them
and those they have lost
that our true gratitude
must go.
(applause)
(music builds)
(Phillip continues)
While we are dining tonight,
people will be moving
amongst you.
I encourage you all to join
with me in contributing tonight,
and in the future,
to ensure that
facilities for research
in all forms of transplantation
will continue
as budgets are tightened.
We have come so far,
but we have further to go.
I don't ask you
to contribute to my name.
The picture you see behind me
is temporary.
It should be named for one
who gave, not one who received.
For someone who can represent
all who have given, and will.
Someone with everything
to live for.
Whose death gave life and hope.
With the blessing of his mother,
Sophia,
his sister, Bella,
and the woman he was to marry,
Martina,
I announce the Danny Grey
Transplant Foundation.
And ask you all
to give generously.
(applause)
(music darkens)
(Sophia sighs)
Why would you do that?!
Would you like Ms Jones to stay?
- No need.
- Wait outside.
That was thoughtless and cruel.
There is an explanation.
His name on the foundation
is wonderful, but
It was an automatic gesture.
I didn't think.
- You should be in there.
- He ordered me out.
If he says it's Danny's heart
You go.
Well, I won't be welcome
if you're not.
We trawled through
so much online material
to narrow down our choice.
Danny's face leapt out
with its open smile
and that gesture
of goodwill and optimism.
We almost used it
as the poster shot,
but others preferred
a more classic pose.
I think, in that moment,
I reverted to what Danny's life
summarised for me.
I
And then I saw your face.
It was like
he was suddenly there.
Maybe if I'd been warned.
Of course.
I regret the moment.
(soft emotive music)
- Are we fine?
- (sighs)
- (laughs softly) Yes.
- Good!
Because we'll be seated together
at dinner.
I hope to be seeing
a lot of you.
Ms Jones will be in touch.
We'll organise a number
of follow-through events
and interviews,
then we'll discuss
what ongoing links
you can have to the foundation.
Whatever helps.
Oh, Bella won't be available
though,
not for two or three weeks.
(jazz piano in background)
Let me know what he says.
Mostly managed.
- You didn't tell her?
- Of course not.
Now, tell them to start the
service, and have Bella join us.
Let's put paid
to her silly nonsense.
With respect,
is it really your affair?
We need you all.
The sad irony is
that the only man
who I've been unfaithful with
who I've actually loved
came along when the old Phillip
started returning.
And he is.
You heard his speech.
That wasn't just show.
I have sensed change.
I have stayed the course
for decades.
Out of fear, cowardice,
for Bart.
And for a sliver of hope
that the man I loved
was still in there somewhere,
deep inside.
To leave now would make
futile years even more so.
I can't leave until I know,
perhaps not even then.
And it would be really unfair
to ask you to wait
for who knows how long.
(emotive music)
You deserve better than me.
I won't come back in.
I trust your hope's
not a mirage.
I trust it's not insanity.
No contact till I say. None.
How would anyone guess?
There'll be questions
once you make your move
and he'll be screaming
"innocent".
They'll be looking
for anything suspicious.
- I want to share the high.
- Tough!
Nothing.
Enjoy the private satisfaction
of watching him suffer.
(Phillip) Bella.
Come in.
Sandra.
Ms Jones can contribute.
Not my idea.
What's this nonsense
about plastic surgery?
Quite a night.
(moodily) I'm tired.
I did try to stop him.
He just ran with it.
So? What do you think?
He made some valid points.
So?
So it's too late
to pull out now.
Not if you've changed your mind.
I'm sure they have people do it
on the table.
The cost of that would
Mr Walford said
he would cover it.
I don't want his money.
- Why does he even care?
- He told you.
(Phillip) You're part of
launching the foundation.
You can't do it black and blue.
You'll be like that for weeks.
- Use Mum.
- We want a family face.
It's emotional blackmail.
(scoffs) No-one is forcing you.
He shouldn't have used Danny.
(Phillip) What would Danny want?
I think he'd say don't do it.
How would he know?
None of us do, of course.
The one relevant thing
he did say
was don't make major decisions
at times of stress.
(Phillip) I've made my biggest
mistakes when I've ignored that.
Revisit the idea in six months
when you're not grieving.
If you're still keen,
I'll pay for the lot,
and more if you want.
We've only just met him.
This whole taking over thing,
it feels weird.
He's rich.
The rich are different.
He's used to getting
his own way.
It's up to you.
See you bright and early.
And weird or not,
what he's done for Danny
is wonderful.
(sighs)
(Danny)You can fix yourself up
any time.
The launch is now.
I don't see how
I make a difference.
You might, not being there.
"She won't support
her druggo brother,
she'd rather be off
slicing and dicing."
Why is it always me
who has to bend?
It's who you are.
- You care.
- I wish I didn't.
No, you don't.
It's the most beautiful thing
about you.
Something about him's off.
Bit disconcerting, taking pills
off you looking like that.
Glamour nurse.
Could take off.
How do you feel?
- (exhales) I made it.
- Just.
- Quiet tomorrow.
- I'll have to.
Admits his frailty! Bravo.
It went well.
It was exciting
being part of it.
They're a fine family.
Not without complexities.
Hopefully I've talked sense
into the girl.
She's no beauty, but
she's certainly not a fright.
Sophia's a fine mother.
Seems so.
You won't tell them?
About the heart?
Oh, stop harping.
They're not
the moneygrubbing kind.
I thought you might be tempted.
I've seen the best go venal.
I'd need to get to know them a
lot better before risking that.
Wise.
You did well.
Take the day off tomorrow,
if I'm fine.
See how you brush up
in the morning.
- Hm.
- I'd like that.
Do you have anyone?
Family?
A son.
And my mother.
All this time
and you've never mentioned them.
You never asked.
(Sandra clears throat)
Ah, thank you.
And?
He'll definitely be
following through with them.
Good.
And no sign he'll overshare.
That sounds like a success.
An early indicator of change -
he actually asked
about my family.
(Sandra chuckles)
Only took him a year.
Right.
Mind you, I can't talk.
- I wasn't having a go at you.
- I know.
I think
people will share
if they wish to.
Do you?
Want to talk about the family?
You've got enough woes
of your own.
There are woes?
Joys too.
One big one.
I'll let you get back to it.
I ended things with Julian
tonight.
It wasn't fair on him.
Are you OK?
I'd normally share that
with Bart.
Not the girl-talk kind, eh?
Not as a rule, no.
If you
If you ever do wish
to discuss your family, I
I'd be interested.
We'll see how we go.
- You enjoyed tonight?
- I did.
I know Mum and Dad hardly spoke,
but it was a start.
Oh, they were busy.
Welles has asked
to see me tomorrow.
- In private.
- Why?
I'm not sure.
You're not going?
Probably.
You hate the guy.
"Hate" is a bit extreme.
More like "disapprove".
So why go?
Mummy might have mentioned
the engagement.
Would she? Would he even care?
He would if he thought
he could get mileage from it.
Best to shut him down
if that's the case, right?
Should I come?
It might not even be that.
Hey.
Any problem,
I'll let you know, OK?
(birdsong)
(sighs)
Hi.
My name is Bella Grey,
I'm scheduled for surgery
this morning.
Yeah, who do I inform
that I'm cancelling?
(water runs)
I thought I'd let you sleep.
- It's
- Late, I know.
I should be there.
- To soak up the champagne.
- (exhales)
The hospital?
Weren't happy -
there'll be a fee.
I'm doing this because of what
the foundation means for Danny,
not for him.
Thank you.
And I'm still getting
the surgery down the track.
He can pay for the cancellation
fee but not for that.
It's up to you. Come here.
Use this delay
to try and see your own beauty.
It's there.
This is ready.
And I'll post that it's off.
It won't get me very many likes.
Why not?
I got heaps for doing it,
especially
for not hiding the fact.
"Heaps" aren't
your real friends.
Care what they think,
not these "friends".
I know.
"It wasn't like that in my day."
Well, it wasn't.
You've made me very happy.
Mr Walford said
he'd breakfast down here.
How is he?
(Phillip) Hail and hearty.
Hm! Sounds like
a bad vaudeville duo.
Someone's chipper.
The night
couldn't have gone better.
Your help was appreciated.
Well, it's for a good cause.
Anything else, sir?
No, that'll be all,
thank you, Dee.
- Bart?
- Stayed out.
With her, I assume.
Your thoughts?
They seem good together.
She's no wilting violet.
She's feisty,
I'll give her that.
He'll need someone strong.
I'm not saying it's her.
He's not as weak as you think.
You should see what he's done
with the Korean deal.
He never mentioned that.
Well, he wants to present it
as a fait accompli.
He should have kept me informed.
He's grown
with you out of action.
- Give him his head.
- Well, we'll see.
With Georgia too.
She did score points
not thrusting herself on us
last night.
So not talking to her
was a test?
By default. I was busy.
She did show tact
in respecting that.
And Julian, what did he show?
(soft emotive music)
We spoke.
And things have changed.
- Changed by?
- Me.
I see.
And how are you?
It's the right thing.
(phone rings)
Oh. I should get this.
Mrs Grey.
Ah, I hope you don't mind
my calling.
- I thought you'd like to know.
- The surgery?
She pulled out.
It's so much you're doing.
I'm pleased. We should meet.
There's a lot to plan.
Uh, I'm happy to.
Whenever suits.
Let's ensure the world
doesn't forget your son.
I'll be in touch.
Oh, and tell Bella good call.
Thank you. For everything.
Meds.
And you can take
that leave pass.
We'll hit the ground running
tomorrow.
We'll have the Greys and Martina
to lunch on Sunday.
We need to know them
to spin them.
Here?
I thought possibly Grandview.
Perhaps somewhere
less intimidating,
- a more neutral space?
- Your choice.
As long as they're made
to feel special.
Georgia Konig too.
We hardly spoke last night.
Let's see how she handles
an average family.
I don't want some elitist miss
in our house.
We don't.
We'll give her a chance.
- That was promising.
- Georgia?
No, the bonding, to the Greys.
Grandview's the old family home,
right?
Yeah, it was shut up
for a reason.
He must be mellowing
to talk of lunch there.
Mum! Martina liked my post
about cancelling the surgery.
She liked our photo too.
Read her comment.
"At least we're smiling again."
It's a start!
It's like Phillip Walford
waved a magic wand.
Phillip didn't do this any more
than he stopped my surgery.
He had a hand in both.
Let's not get
too mixed up with him.
We have to, for the foundation.
I don't understand your problem.
It's just a feeling.
This is so good.
All I feel is gratitude.
He's too keen somehow,
like he wants into our lives.
(tense music)
Alan? The car.
Now.
(Cate) A party of nine,
no more than twelve.
And total privacy. Yep.
And nothing too elaborate.
Thanks.
I've booked Vista.
- I'm assuming you'll be needed.
- I imagine.
I'm off.
I'll help you with all that
tomorrow.
What are you up to?
Now?
Nothing that can't wait.
Would you like to meet Thomas?
My son.
And Mum.
Would you like me to?
They've heard so much about you.
It will explain a lot.
Then I'd love to.
There's Mum.
That's Thomas.
I worry about his future.
That's why I'm open
to bending the rules.
- All this time
- You had enough on your plate.
He's my precious boy.
Come on then, introduce me.
- As Mrs Walford, Cate?
- Cate, of course.
- You are my employer.
- And your friend.
Hi. Hey!
- Hello, darling.
- (Thomas laughs softly)
- Hi. I'm Cate.
- Hello there.
- Nice to meet you.
- Sorry, this is my
- Cate, Mrs Walford.
- Nice to meet you.
She's my boss.
- (knock at door)
- Come.
A visitor.
The Konig lass.
I said that you were
writing your sermon,
but she said
that she's expected.
Send her in.
At least this time
you made it past the doorstep.
I'm unaware of an appointment.
White lie - she wanted me
to come back later.
We need to talk.
You've nothing to fear from me.
We must share the engagement
with Phillip in our own time.
I'm entirely simpatico.
If anyone knows the perils of
getting offside with him, I do.
(sighs) It's so unfair the way
he cut off donations from you.
It's a funeral!
You're meant to say good things
of the dead.
It was my implications
about him that rankled,
not my praise of your father.
He did hound Daddy to the grave.
And he managed to justify it.
Take care with Phillip Walford.
I wish you well.
And I hope you can bring out
the best in young Bart.
I'll be trying.
I'll try my best for you too,
with the donations.
Whatever you can manage.
There were hints of hope
last night.
You finish your sermon,
I'll see myself out.
(breathes jarringly)
(whimpers)
Are you alright, dear?
(weakly) I'm fine.
(tearfully) I'm just outside
his place.
Come, please. I need you.
- (knock at door)
- Come.
Can I get you anything?
Not just now, thank you.
Miss Konig seemed upset.
Not in the least.
Mm, I
I must have misunderstood.
She was most satisfied, in fact.
(phone rings)
I said no contact.
He has no idea.
It went perfectly.
- Have you called Bart?
- He's on his way.
And you called me
straight after.
Yes?
You're a stupid bitch.
I
This could bring
the whole thing down on us.
It's in your phone record.
If anyone does ask,
you pressed the wrong number.
- I don't see
- That's the problem, you don't.
Now make another call
straightaway from the 'M's.
Is your mother under 'M'
for 'Mum'?
- Yes.
- Call her,
act like you have to talk,
then ring off
like you've changed your mind.
- Sound upset.
- Why
Do it!
Now, get off the line
and make it convincing.
(tense music swells)
(Georgia cries)
I don't know what to do.
Tell me, what is it?
What happened?
He's blackmailing me.
(Georgia hyperventilates)
(Carrie laughs)
Can I see your dress?
Ohh I'll show you some photos.
Put it on, put it on!
I'm raising
a little fashionista.
- (Sophia laughs)
- (David) Up-ah!
(Carrie) Whoa!
(Sophia) In you go.
Drive on.
- (Driver) You're not going to
- No.
- (engine starts)
- Drive.
