Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) s08e04 Episode Script

The Way We Weren't

My name is Kelly Taylor.
I am 22 years old.
My mother's name is Jackie.
My sister's name is Erin.
My brother's name is David.
And, as luck would have it, you are Brandon Walsh.
So far, so good.
Dr.
Sturla was right.
If I write it down, it really helps me to remember.
Hopefully, uh Hopefully this'll help you remember, too.
I uh brought you a little present.
What is this? It's your ring.
You were wearing it when you got When I was shot? You can say it, Brandon.
It's beautiful.
Uh were we engaged? Yes and no.
Um, I-I gave you that ring when I proposed to you the first time.
But things didn't go so well.
So, I I took it back to the jeweler, and and then you went back there and bought it back.
It's been through a lot, that ring.
Kind of like the two of us.
Anyway, I-l know that that you always loved it, and-and I don't know, I thought you might want to wear it.
I wish I could remember.
But I can't.
I'm sorry.
That's okay.
That's all right, I, you know I understand.
Knock-knock.
- Hey, guys.
- Noah.
How you doing? Uh, this is Noah Hunter.
I guess you could say he's your - blood brother now.
- Oh.
So you're the guy.
Mr.
AB negative, just like me.
Well, the doctors say that you probably helped save my life.
I don't know how I'll ever be able to thank you.
Anybody with our weird blood type would've done the same thing.
I just hope you don't have any, uh, side effects, you know? Mmm, what should I be looking for? Hair growing on my back? Hey, don't make her laugh too much.
She's still got stitches.
- What's wrong? - It's okay.
It's nothing, I'm just venting at poor Dr.
Sturla here.
She's getting better, isn't she? Oh, physically, yes, I couldn't be happier.
But mentally, well, I'm just not seeing the kind of improvement that I'd like.
It's my fault.
I was so worried about helping her get over her surgery and her gunshot, and I just kept her so isolated.
There's no blame to be placed, Mrs.
Taylor.
Kelly's first order of business was to have a physical recovery.
Now that she's on the right road, we can concentrate on her amnesia.
I'm gonna start her on dopamine, noradrenaline Things that'll enhance the chemical messengers - in the brain, but - But there's no guarantee that they'll work.
When we're dealing with the complexities of the brain, there are never any guarantees.
There must be something we can do.
Kelly's memories may come back on their own, but it would be really helpful if you could surround her with familiar faces, uh, people from her past, things she loved.
Anything that can trigger memories.
Yeah, we'll do whatever it takes.
It's her best chance.
Excuse me, I have to answer this page.
It's so strange, the things that she can remember and the things she can't.
She remembers me.
Little things from her childhood, but none of the big events.
It's so hard to understand.
- Yeah.
- Oh, Brandon, it breaks my heart that she doesn't remember you.
Not as much as it breaks mine.
Where's Donna? She couldn't get out of her job appointment.
- I'll rm her in.
- All right.
Well, look who it is, the working girl wannabe.
So any interviews today, Val? Well at least I'm interviewing.
What are you doing? - Is this gonna take long? - No.
I'll keep it short.
All right, as we all know, Kelly's retrograde amnesia is sort of in a holding pattern.
Which basically means she's lost the last couple of years of her life.
But she also has what they call "antigrade amnesia," which means it's hard for her to even keep new information in her head.
The doctor said that could get better with time, though.
Exactly.
But to get at those lost memories, the plan is to bombard her with information from her past: People, places, pictures, stories, everything.
Everything? Yeah, everything.
If it's part of her past, I want her to have it: The good, the bad, the disgusting.
I'm going to start bombarding her this morning.
Well, then I'll drop by afterwards and come up with all the wonderful memories I have.
This is nothing to joke about, Val.
Sorry.
I'll call Donna and, uh, find out when we can come by.
Yeah, I'll head over after my important business meeting on campus.
Just can't seem to tear yourself away from old C.
U.
, huh? You are looking at one of the hottest new sports agents to ever hit the boards.
Yeah, like you have a chance representing the C.
U.
women's basketball team.
Not the whole team, Valerie, just the top three players.
You guys want to let Brandon finish? That's okay, I'm done.
Thanks for all your help, guys.
I appreciate it.
- Okay.
- Yeah, we're there for you, man.
Thanks.
Hello? Uh, yeah, hold on just a sec.
A Mr.
Grobecki from Seattle - Seattle Times.
- Right.
- It's a newspaper.
- Yeah.
Mr.
Grobecki, how you doing? Brandon Walsh.
Really? The Metro desk? Yeah, yeah, that would be fantastic.
I I can't really start that quickly.
You see, I I got a little problem here.
My girlfriend was shot in a drive-by shooting and No, no, she's gonna be fine.
Listen, do you think you could do me a favor and maybe hold the job open for a week? You could? You know what? That would be fantastic.
I will let you know within the week.
Thank you, sir.
Bye-bye.
- I'll take this for you.
Thanks.
- Oh, okay.
Breakfast man.
You can just leave it there.
I'm not hungry.
Now, you got to eat if you want to get that youthful, healthy glow back.
Noah.
How're you feeling? Much better.
I think.
I'm ready to get out of here and go home, though, wherever that is.
You're not gonna be able to unless you get your strength back.
I'm serious about that eating thing.
It's the only way.
These are for you.
They're beautiful.
Thank you.
Yeah, I spared no expense.
I picked 'em at the peak of freshness.
I got some other goodies for you.
Yeah? What's this? Um, I didn't know what kind of music you liked, so I got you a little of this, a little of that.
I don't even remember what kind of music I liked.
How can you forget something like that? Don't worry about it.
I mean, you'll listen to it and, uh it'll come back to you like that.
L gotta go- So soon? Yeah, but I'll be back later.
I'll stay longer.
Winston.
Noah, can you do me a favor? When you come back, can you bring Winston? My mom will know.
You got it.
I don't have time.
Donna, come on in.
Look, let's just deal with this at the meeting, all right? Goliath, quiet, baby.
Don't let it throw you; I thrive on chaos.
Oh, I can handle it, Mrs.
Schulze.
Um, did you decide what you want me to get you yet? Yes.
I want something like this or these; We'll do the fittings here.
I don't have time to go from one damn shop to another.
That's what you have me for.
And I cannot tell you how grateful I am that What now? Excuse me.
Yes? Yes, this is she.
Appointment? Oh, my God! I completely forgot.
No, yes.
Yes.
He'll be there.
Okay.
Bye.
Is there a problem? Where is my head? The vet Goliath was supposed to be there for his shots and grooming this morning Slipped my mind completely.
Well, if you're all booked up, I could take him over there.
That would be such a lifesaver.
I'll pay you for it, of course.
I hope it won't be too much out of your way.
- No problem.
- Thank you so much.
Goliath, baby, come on.
Bye-bye time.
Good shot.
Take it to the hoop.
Rm Open! Shot! Yes, all right! - Steve! - Hey! I didn't think you were going to show.
You kidding? Miss an opportunity of a lifetime? - What might that be? - You.
When you're voted Rookie of the Year in the WNBA, you're going to look right into those cameras and say, "I owe it all to Steve Sanders, who believed in me when I was an underrated player at C.
U.
" To say nothing of practicing six hours a day for the last, oh, God, nine years Well, there is that, too.
- What's this? - What do you think Karl Malone's the only Mailman? Steve Sanders delivers, too.
The tickets! Oh, my God, you got the tickets! Hey! What'd I tell you? They told me the Chemical Brothers concert was sold out for weeks.
Well, look, you stick with me after you graduate I'll deliver for you.
Steve, you're the greatest.
I know.
Tell your friends.
Kel, it's been like this all morning.
Can you believe she has me taking her dog to the vet? Yeah, I know.
Hold on.
What? No, I can still make it to the hospital.
Probably like around noonish.
Okay.
Noah what? He gave you that? That's sweet.
Well, I wish I knew him better myself.
Mm-hmm.
Oh, shoot, I have another call.
Can you hang on a second? Okay, I'll just see you at noon.
Okay, bye- Hello.
Oh, hi, Mrs.
Schulze.
What? Shoes for which outfit, the gray or the blue? The blue suit? Okay, hold on.
No, no, not you, Goliath.
He what? No, you did not mention he hates the vet.
But Oh, boy, got to go.
Goliath! Stop! Wait! Good dog.
Heel! Listen, Brandon, I don't want you to think about giving up that job offer in Seattle on my account.
Well, it's not just on your account, Kel, it's it's on our account.
I mean I know you don't remember anything right now, but when you do, I don't want to be a thousand miles away.
Let's just look at the rest of the pictures, okay? Okay.
This is us.
You and me.
Yeah.
I know.
- Donna and David.
- Mm-hmm.
Uh, Steve and Valerie.
Kel, do you remember any of this? No.
Nothing.
I don't remember Hawaii.
I barely remember today.
Hey, folks.
Hey, Detective.
How's our patient - doing this morning? - Much better.
But I'm starting to feel like I'm the one in jail.
-Yeah, well I hope they let you out soon.
We could use your l.
D.
to help put that creep away.
I thought Brandon already identified him.
True, but, um, we have a little problem.
How could there be a problem? I lD'd the guy from the lineup.
He's the guy, no question.
Yeah, that's the problem.
See, the lab results came back.
No gunshot residue on his hands.
So what we'd like you to do, Mr.
Walsh, is come on back down to the station.
Look at a few other pictures, and as soon as you're ready, young lady I'll be there.
Good.
Can you, um, just leave the pictures? Yeah, sure.
I'll see you later.
Whoa.
- Easy there, big fella.
- Yeah, I'm sorry.
- It's just my animal magnetism.
- Oh.
Hey! Hey, somebody's in a good mood.
Yeah, that would be me.
Yeah, you finally win the lottery? Better, I'm on the verge of a whole new career.
Steve Sanders, sports agent.
I need a number four for table five and two threes for the back deuce.
- Okay.
- Whew, it's a good thing I took all that math in school.
What's with the toothy grin? I'm celebrating.
You care to join me? Why don't you get that, uh, Charlotte Campbell to help you? Charlotte Campbell is not my girlfriend.
Well, that's a smart move, 'cause, how do you say? She's out of your league? What do I have to do to get you to go out with me? Um be somebody else? Keep working it, pal.
She's warming up to you.
Oh, I'll melt her eventually.
Hey, Nat, this real-life stuff isn't any more difficult than school.
I've got a big meeting with Drew Zaleski.
Zaleski, the big deal sports agent? The very one.
And when I tell him I've landed Charlotte Campbell, I'm in, big time.
You're sure you don't need this for a while? Mine just committed suicide.
No, go ahead.
Grab yourself a beer.
You'll have to put it on my tab.
Yeah, like you'll ever need a tab with me.
Business still off? Yeah.
I don't know, school's back.
I just, I can't seem to bring 'em in.
It's so frustrating.
Maybe I need some new bands or something.
You should get some.
That's the problem.
I can't find any.
It's like this town's all dried up or something.
When you and Valerie were partners, she didn't get involved in that side of the business? No, music was always my department.
Tell me about her.
Who, Valerie? I can tell you in one word: Sex and money.
That's two.
Not where Valerie's concerned.
Dude, if you don't have dough, forget it.
Val's out for money, for stocks, bonds, property.
She'll take cash, check, credit card But when it came to squeezing every nickel out of this club, she knew what she was doing.
You and I should go hunting.
Hunting? Band hunting.
Um I know a few out of the way places.
Sounds good.
Hey, you know somebody named Winston? Kelly wants me to bring him back.
I have no idea who this guy is, it's David.
I'm so dead.
My life is over.
You're not going to believe what just happened to me.
Donna, relax.
Okay, what happened? Okay, you know Jane Schulze, the woman I'm shopping for? I lost Goliath.
Who's who's Goliath? Her dog.
You took her dog shopping? No, to the vet.
See, Jane had an appointment.
She couldn't take him to the vet, so I said I would take him to the vet.
I didn't know he hates vets.
So we get to the vet, the dog takes off, he bolts.
I can't find him anywhere and now Jane expects me to have him back.
Okay, here's what you need to do: You need to call Jane and tell her that there was a mix-up at the vet and they're keeping Goliath overnight, and you'll have him back to her tomorrow.
Sounds like a plan.
Well, how am I supposed to have him back to her tomorrow when I can't find him? We're just gonna have to get started.
I'd love to help you guys, but I can't.
I Don't worry about it.
How hard can this be? Good morning.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Well, what is all that? Your college and high school yearbooks.
I thought we could take a trip down memory lane.
Valerie, that's so sweet.
Anything I can do to help.
It's so weird.
I mean, I know that we all went to high school and college together, but I feel like I'm meeting you all for the first time.
Well, actually, um, I just met you in college.
I wasn't part of the high school crowd.
That was just you, Donna, David, Steve and Brandon.
By the way, um, has Brandon come by? Yeah.
Yeah, he's being really sweet.
Yeah, that he is.
So are you starting to feel anything for him? You mean, do I remember that we were in love? No.
Listen, Kelly People are gonna tell you things about your relationship with Brandon, but, you know, you shouldn't Just don't believe everything you hear.
I mean, you and Brandon were, were really close and you were very involved.
But you had other involvements, too.
I mean, that ring, it it wasn't on your finger, was it? No, no.
It was like this.
Look, all I'm saying is just don't drive yourself crazy trying to remember something that may not have been there.
Where is Noah in here? I can't find him.
Oh, that's because you just met him in Hawaii.
Really? That's so weird.
I mean, out of everybody, I feel like I know him the best.
- Really? - Yeah.
So what do you know about him? What do you want to know? Everything.
Who is he? Where does he come from? Uh, Kelly You know, before you get too interested in Noah, I think maybe he might have somebody.
Brandon said he wasn't involved with anybody.
And he said that you weren't interested in him.
He did? Mm-hmm.
You know, the truth is, Kelly, I just think you can do much better.
Will you do me a favor? Will you find out if he does have somebody else? I'll do my best.
Great.
Thanks.
Mr.
Zaleski, thrilled to meet you.
I'm Steve Sanders.
I'm glad you could make it, Steve.
Are you kidding? Pass up an opportunity to meet a legendary sports agent like you? Come on.
It's a little thick, but thanks.
- Whoo! - So you'd like to join my agency, huh? Oh, yeah.
You guys are the best in the business.
Why aim low when I can shoot for number one? And you know why we're number one? Well, the way I see it, the sports business is a lot like biology.
You either grow or die.
If you're gonna stay number one, you've got to learn to expand into things like women's sports.
Title lX's going to make sure it gets bigger and bigger, and the WNBA is already running away with itself, so things are a lock.
And I just happen to have a bead on a future number one right now.
Really? Yeah, Charlotte Campbell.
I've seen her play in this gym.
Deadly in the paint, second leading scorer in the W.
C.
Central.
She's great and she's mine.
In the bag.
And I'm also talking to some of her teammates and some guys I know through KEG.
Look, Steve, you're a nice, well-meaning guy, so I'm gonna do you a big favor and be totally candid with you.
Well, thanks, I'd appreciate that.
Yeah, well, we'll see.
The only reason I'm meeting with you today is because of your father.
You know my dad? Oh, yeah.
I've done a lot of business with Rush.
He's my kind of deal maker.
Since you're his son, I'm gonna be straight with you.
I believe these are yours.
Where'd you get these?! - I gave these to Charlotte.
- No! You didn't.
And if anyone so much as suspects that you did, you deny it till your face turns blue.
Do you know what the penalty is for a college athlete who accepts gifts from alumni? Automatic suspension.
Charlotte Campbell probably has a future, and you damn near ended it with those tickets.
And the same thing goes for any other C.
U.
athlete you go near.
You understand? How did you get these tickets? It's my job.
For your father's sake, I'm giving you a life's lesson here, Steve.
Don't put on the cowboy hat unless you got the cattle to prove it.
In mocha? You know, I don't see any silk in mocha.
Uh, sweetie, you're looking in the wrong section.
- These are the cheapies.
- Cheapies? No, Mrs.
Schulze, I wasn't talking to you.
Actually, can I call you right back? Thanks.
Let's see.
You know what? You need to be looking over in that section.
- Uh, Val? - Yeah? What are you doing here? Oh, job interview.
But you know what? I don't think retail's in my blood.
Hmm.
So, are you doing that personal shopping thing? Mm-hmm.
Oh, hold on.
Hello.
Hi, Mrs.
Freiberg! Yes, I'm at Paris Bluff right now.
I just found you two perfect outfits.
I was thinking I could meet you around 3:00.
Great.
Oh, I have call waiting.
Can you hold on? Thanks.
Hello.
Hi, Mrs.
Musgrave.
Yes, I'm here at Paris Bluff.
I was thinking I could meet you at Gucci around 5:00.
You can't do that? Um, can you hold on a second? Okay.
How's 6:00? L-I just have to visit a friend at the hospital.
I can switch them.
Okay.
Ooh, um, could you hold on a second? Thanks.
Mrs.
Freiberg, I am so sorry, but can you hold on one more second? Thank you.
Hello, Mrs.
Musgrave? Mrs.
Freiberg, hi.
Ah ha.
I just lost them both.
Great.
You know, I have to say, I like the brown one.
Better than the black? Well, it depends on who it's for.
Well, it's for Mrs.
Freiberg.
Or is that Mrs.
Musgrave? I don't know.
One of them was canceling on me.
All right, hold this.
Redial.
Hi, Mrs.
Musgrave? Yes, this is Donna Martin's associate, Valerie Malone.
Uh, yeah, we're not gonna be able to move this afternoon's appointment.
Um, will tomorrow be okay? Great, great.
Yeah.
We'll, uh, we'll call you later to confirm.
Okay, thanks.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
How are you at finding lost dogs? Teddy-gram for Miss Kelly Taylor.
Teddy-gram.
Winston.
You got him! If you knew what I had to go through to get this bag of rags.
Oh, thank you.
Winston! How about a hug for me? Do I know you well enough? Well, considering your memory Or, uh, lack thereof I'd say you know me about as well as anybody else right now.
It's good to see someone else who can laugh about amnesia.
Personally, I think that most memories are vastly overrated.
Oh, excuse me.
You wanted to see me, Kelly? Yes.
Doctor, I'm going stir crazy here.
Look, Kelly, your physical therapy is going very well, but the amnesia is something we're gonna have to monitor here.
You're not letting me out, are you? Not quite yet.
I know it seems like it, but it's not a jail.
You don't have to stay in your room.
You can walk around the hospital all you want.
Oh, that sounds like fun.
Hey, Doc, it's none of my business, but, uh, you said Kelly was okay physically.
Right? Well, considering the severity of her injuries, yes.
How about an outing? Like a day trip, off the grounds.
Maybe for a little while, only if there's someone there, just in case there's a problem.
Care to be my chaperone? I would love to.
Uh, let's hurry up.
Get your things.
I'll wait for you out front, okay? Okay.
- Thanks, Doc.
- Sure.
Thank you.
You know, you probably won't understand this for a while, but, uh, Drew Zaleski did you a great favor.
Oh, yeah, I plan on being eternally grateful.
Remind me to send him a thank-you card in 50 years.
You know, sooner or later, my son, you're gonna realize that life is not like school.
In school you screw up, maybe you flunk a class.
In life, you screw up, the consequences can be brutal.
I'm not talking about succeeding or failing, either.
I'm talking about keeping a roof over your head, food in your stomach.
And when you have a family I know, I know! I'm a screw-up! Look, you've been telling me that for the last 20 years.
You know what? You're right.
I am a screw-up.
Is that what you wanted to hear? You really think I get a joy out of you talking like that? All I ever wanted was for you to make something of yourself.
I know, because this "myself" isn't quite good enough for you.
Is that what you're trying to say, Dad? No.
What I'm saying is that maybe some of this is my fault, too.
That's why I want to help you.
Look I've been doing some thinking.
Maybe what you need is something of your own.
A business that you can control completely, be totally responsible for, that you can build, that you can take pride in.
Something I can screw up.
No, this time you have no choice but to succeed.
And what exactly is this business venture? You remember that little newspaper that I own? That Beverly Hills gossip rag? Well, not anymore.
I fired the incompetents I had running it.
It's defunct now.
It's a bare-bones operation.
What do I know about running a newspaper? Well, I hope to hell a lot more than those idiots I fired did.
Son, it's not the Washington Post, but it does need a publisher.
I'm giving you a big opportunity here.
Don't blow it.
Come on upstairs.
I'll show you the facility.
Ooh, I'm shaking with anticipation.
Valerie? - Your partner? - Mm-hmm.
Are you nuts? I need the help.
Donna, this is Valerie, the one where when you shake her hand, you gotta check and make sure your fingers aren't missing.
Look, I know this sounds crazy, but she's extremely well-organized and she has good taste.
And to be honest, I can't handle all the new clients Mrs.
Schulze's throwing at me.
Well, that'll be over soon.
Oh, that's funny.
No, you know what? You're right.
If we don't find Goliath, I won't need Valerie's help.
I'll need a good place in the unemployment line.
This dog is gone.
I might as well just go and tell her.
Who, Valerie? No, Jane Schulze! You know what? I'm just gonna go over there and tell her how incompetent I am, apologize, and offer to pay her.
Pay her? Mm-hmm.
For the love of her life? Donna, how do you do that? Don't worry.
We'll find the dog.
I wish I could believe you.
Steve, the Beverly Hills Shopper? It's an eight-page handout.
People use this rag to line their bird cages.
What's the matter with you? Forget about The Shopper.
It's gone.
It's history.
It's whatever we want to do with it.
We can make any kind of paper we want.
What do you mean "we," white man? We, us, you, me, partners, together.
I'll be the publisher, you be the editor-in-chief.
We'll split everything 50-50.
Mm Just take a look.
Yeah! Uh-huh, uh-huh.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
Good-bye.
Ah, wait! Don't be too hasty.
Think about it, Brandon.
This place is filled with opportunity.
A little paint, a little creativity, a little imagination.
A little insanity.
Come on, Steve, let's go.
So you'll think about it? Okay, I'll think about it.
No.
Brandon, come on! We could really make something out of this newspaper.
It'll be our own newspaper.
An underground newspaper.
We could make a fortune.
With what, Steve? With what? There's nothing here.
You can't make something out of nothing.
In order to have a newspaper, you need, you need employees, you need, you need hardworking, talented people.
You need writers, you need, you need advertising salespeople, you need, you need art directors, you need computer layout people, you need equipment, you need printers, you need distributors.
Not to mention you need salaries to pay all these people.
Yes, yes, there's all those things, but Brandon, I've been thinking, and well, there's you.
There's you, there's me, there's David.
He could do the, uh, the music and club reviews, movie stuff, things like that.
Donna, she could do fashion.
Me, I'll hammer out the sports.
You just have to tie it all together.
After you spell-check my work, of course.
What do you say? And what do we live on in the meantime, Steve? Well, The Shopper still has about 60 grand in accounts receivable.
My old man said that we could use that to get this puppy up on its feet.
Brandon, once we start turning a profit, it's all ours.
All Of it! What do you say, Brandon? This could be a cash cow.
Come on.
Come on, man.
Steve, you know I love you, bro.
I can't do it.
We should turn back soon.
Just a little bit further, okay? All right I don't want to tire you out too much, though.
No, I'm fine.
This is exactly what I needed.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
I told the guy in charge that we'd turn back in five minutes, okay? You're worse than Sturla.
Oh! All right, five more minutes.
This is so I don't know, weird? Fascinating? It's like I know every inch of this beach, but I'm seeing it for the first time.
Does that make any sense? Yeah.
You ever hear of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard? Don't remind me.
I had to plow through his essays when I took sophomore philosophy.
Not exactly easy reading.
No.
Wait a second, you remember sophomore philosophy? Oh, yeah, our instructor was Dr.
Johanssen.
He had this big wart Oh, my God, now I'm starting to remember.
I live in a beach house not far from here.
My room is red and Donna has the room right next to me.
No, I don't.
Brandon told me that I live someplace else with him.
I don't live at the beach.
No, you did.
Donna and you were roommates for years.
Don't, don't rush it, don't do anything.
Just let it come when it's ready.
I don't know if I want to remember.
Not many people get a chance to have a whole new start.
I'd give anything for that.
Where the hell have you two been? Hey, B.
- What's up? - I've been sitting here for the last two hours, that's what's up.
We went to the beach.
The beach? Yeah, yeah, it was great.
I felt the sun on my face.
Hey, why don't I just leave you two to catch up? B, you wanna grab a beer later? No, I don't think so.
Okay, cool.
Big day today, huh? You better get some rest.
I'll check with you tomorrow.
Okay, thank you, Noah.
All right.
Going to the beach Don't you think, uh, that's maybe pushing things a little? No, I don't.
Brandon, when I was at the beach I started to remember things.
I could practically see the beach house and Donna, Clare, my room.
Well, that's great.
Anything else? Mmm, just little things.
And wh-what about us? No.
I still can't remember.
I'm sorry, Brandon.
Not in the pound, not in the neighborhood, probably dead in the road somewhere.
I don't know how much longer I can stall Jane Schulze.
I've already called her twice with excuses.
Donna, I'm telling you, someone must have found him and taken him in.
He doesn't have a name tag on.
How are we gonna find out? You know what, forget it.
I'm just gonna call her right now; I'm gonna tell her everything.
At 11:00? I think you're just gonna have to wait until you take her the clothes tomorrow.
Hey, B, nice morning, huh? If you say so.
Okay, let me guess.
Kelly, right? What the hell were you thinking, taking her to the beach? Man, you don't want an explanation, you want a fight.
You chill out and I'll come down and talk.
Let's talk right now.
All right, you're entitled.
She is your girlfriend.
I'm glad we agree on that.
Look, man, it was no secret rendezvous, okay? Didn't Kelly tell you? Her doctor thought it'd be good for her to get out.
And it was.
And you just happened to be there.
I made a promise, I keep my promises.
How many other things have you promised Kelly? Or Valerie, for that matter.
Noah, why don't you do me a favor? Give me a list of the people you're not involved with.
It'll be a lot shorter.
Look, whoever I see is none of your damn business.
It is when it comes to Kelly.
Look, man, it's not my style to get involved with something like you and Kelly.
It never was.
If I'm treading too close, give me the word, I'll back off.
As far as I'm concerned you and Kelly have always been meant to be together.
I hope you're right.
Good luck.
Mrs.
Schulze, I am very sorry, but Goliath Mrs.
Schulze, first, may I point out how lovely you look today? Now about Goliath Mrs.
Schulze, do you believe in alien abductions? No You look like you've been staring at a picture.
Trying to figure out what makes me tick.
Hey, what'll it be, boys? - Beer.
- Beer.
Noah? Oh, my God, it's been Holy Christmas! Where have you been? What do you say, Luce? I say you're a sight.
Man, I haven't - seen you since - Yeah, we got a lot of catching up to do.
How 'bout a round of beers for my friends here? Promise now? I want some quality time with you.
Four beers, coming up.
Well, you've got some interesting friends.
Yeah, some good people here.
Real salt of the earth, you know? You from around here? No, from back East, originally.
You know, this band's not too bad.
Yeah, it's the backup band.
The next one's even better.
Okay, drink up, boys.
Thanks.
So, did you go to school back East? What is it you want to know? Huh? What do you want to know? I went to Harvard, my parents are very wealthy, and I work on boats to keep my head straight.
Right.
Steve, you, uh, think you can beat me at a game of eight ball? I'd rather try and beat you with an eight ball.
Get to know.
Who I am I'm feeling strange.
You see Kelly today? Yep.
She asked about you.
Hey, look, B, when she gets it all back together, I mean, I'm gonna be the one she doesn't remember.
You know, I just I feel like I'm I'm stuck in cement, you know? I can't go forward, I can't go backward.
The Seattle job, huh? I really want the job.
But I want Kelly more.
We're not that different, B.
You know, believe it or not I used to be a lot like you.
You know, everything always came easy.
I didn't work that much.
It was all right there.
Like you.
What are you saying? Carpe diem, man.
It's Latin for "Seize the day.
" I had to find out the hard way.
You get just one of each day.
And when you lose that day, it's gone forever.
I don't want you to wake up one day realizing you've lost more days than you can even count.
Without Kelly, I just Without Kelly you're still Brandon, okay? Don't lose him, man.
You've got passion.
If you want to wait for Kelly, fine, wait for her.
But use that passion.
Now, if you want to write, go write.
You don't have to go to Seattle to do it.
It's where you are, man, it's not the geography.
Huh, nobody's that lucky.
It's not luck.
It's skill, baby, all skill.
Skill? Rack them up.
We'll try it again in a minute.
Here.
Hey, Bran, order me another beer, okay? - I'm going to use the bathroom.
- Hmm.
I'm coming with you.
So, what are we gonna call this little rag of ours? We? Ours? Yeah, I've been giving it some thought and, uh, you know, a little paint, a little imagination.
Are you serious? Never more.
Really, you'll do this? You are serious? Conditions.
Okay, let's hear them.
Not many.
You handle all the business.
I get full editorial authority.
What I say goes in goes in.
What I say stays out stays out that's it.
- That's it? - That's it.
- That's all? - That's all.
Oh, boy, you drive a hard bargain, Brandon.
Let me think about this.
Okay, deal! Deal.
Ah! No massage parlor ads.
Bran, where do you think all the money is? We'll have to find the money somewhere else.
- Oh, after you.
- After you.
Thank you.
