Marvyn's Playbook

Previously on Big Shot
We got a big game coming up.
Carlsbad is the only thing
that stands between us and DII.
- Hmm.
- My mom just called.
She wants me to go to
this prep school next year.
This is in Wisconsin.
- Dad, I can't go back there.
- You won't.
UCSB has an opening for a head coach.
They're gonna be
devastated by your news.
What if Jake's a spy?
And he's using Olive to get close
to us and steal all of our plays?
I know that you're not my real mom.
You need to hear Angel's side from her.
Something's definitely going on.
He and Holly were all
hush-hush about something.
It's exciting to get around
college players again, you know?
He's planning on leaving.
We're committed to beating Carlsbad.
Apparently, you're
committed to leaving us.
Forsaking family and friendship
for power and position!
- I take it she knows.
- Marvyn?
Can you see yourself?
The crowds, the noise.
This is where you belong.
Should we call your agent?
Start talking deals?
Double, double toil and trouble ♪
Coward!
You are the fool!
So ends the bloody tyrant.
Forsaking family and friendship
for power and position!
Havlicek stole the ball! It's all over.
Havlicek stole the ball! It's all over.
It's a little early, isn't it, Sam?
Well, it's never too
early for good news.
The, uh, UCSB offer came in.
Couple little kinks to work
out, but it's in a good place.
Congratulations, Marvyn.
You are about to graduate
from high school to college.
Yeah, all right, that's great.
What, that's all I get?
No, uh, "Sam, you're a wizard"?
Not even "Thank you, Sam, for
making my dreams come true"?
No, all that. Uh, all that, Sam.
I appreciate it. I just
I just woke up.
You're not having second

No, of course not.
'Cause this is everything
you've been wanting,
and it's not gonna happen again.
I know, I know. I'm excited.
You do get that, right? You get
this is not going to happen again?
At least, not with me.
I get it, Sam. Thank you.
Let's, um Let's wrap this
thing up and get it signed.
Good, that's what I want to hear.
Congrats, my friend.
You are about to be, once
again, officially, a
- I'm sure you're not speaking to me.
- Actually, I have a lot to say.
Why didn't you tell me?
Because I didn't wanna upset you
until I knew UCSB was
gonna be a sure thing.
Okay. So, you knew I'd be upset.
Does that not bother you?
Of course it does.
I just didn't wanna tell you until
I knew it was happening
for sure. That's all.
And is it?
Yes.
Yeah, that's
I'm never part of these decisions.
You just announce them, and
I have to live with them.
Well, that's that's true. But
You know how demanding
my job is, and I do it for you.
I do it so we can have a nice house
and you can go to a nice school
No. Dad, you do it

I want a say in the decisions
that affect my life.
But once again, my life
is dictated by your life.
That's Lucas.
Emma, it's not
All right! Come on. Let's go!
Okay, let's see some big hands!
Let's see those hands up!
Nope, you gotta be tougher
than that for Carlsbad.
- All right, girls. Bring it in.
- Do you hear something?
It's like a fly buzzing
or a rat in the walls.
Crickets, maybe.
We're playing that game, huh? Okay.
I'm gonna talk, and you can
pretend not to listen to me.
I know you're upset. You can
be mad at me all you want.
But you're just punishing yourself
if you let that stop you
from beating Carlsbad.
You earned that win.
Yeah, well, we will beat Carlsbad
with Holly as our coach.
Yeah, like she was the last
time when we beat them.
This is news to me. I
All right. Practice is over. Come on.
- But we just started.
- Practice is over.
Coach?
Guys, you heard Coach
Korn. Practice is over.
Come on. Go, go.
What is the matter with them?
The DII win is for them, not me.
Look, sometimes what happens up
here doesn't translate to here.
Well, if we're not in sync,
we're not gonna beat Carlsbad.
Speaking of that, I think
I have something to tell you.
Uh-oh. I'm not gonna like this, am I?
I don't know.
I got a call from Coach McCarthy.
Apparently, she is retiring
at the end of the year,
and she thinks that I would
be a good replacement.
Nah, I don't know. I wouldn't trust her.
She's She's sneaky, that one. Sneaky.
You're right. She's probably trying
to manipulate me and get in my head
so she can have an advantage
at the game.
- Yeah.
- But, I don't know, this was
- What? Big, even for her?
- Yeah.
And what if it is real?
I mean, she did say at the last game
that I was a really good head coach.
She's right.
You know, Holly, if this is
real, you should take it.
Just be careful.
I'm a big girl.
You're not gonna tell me
to apologize to the girls?
No.
How could he possibly think we'd want
to play for him after
he betrayed us like that?
It doesn't matter, because
we're not playing for him.
I don't think he meant
to hurt our feelings.
- That's what I want to talk to you about.
- My playbook's gone!
Okay, okay. Don't panic.
Maybe you left it at home.
No, I always have it in
my bag. It's not here.
When was the last time you saw it?
I don't know. I I guess I was
studying it before Emma's play.
- Okay, so you probably just dropped it.
- Or Jake took it.
No. He didn't.
I mean, why? 'Cause you like him,
so he couldn't possibly
have done exactly
the same thing he's done to us before?
I knew it! I even said that guy
might be a spy from Carlsbad.
- Remember?
- Stop it. Why would he do that?
Because that's how Carlsbad works.
Coach McCarthy never specifically
told us to do things. But I
Yeah, but you knew
that she wanted you to.
It's a culture she creates.
Holly, do you really think he did it?
I don't know.
I do think it's a possibility.
Yeah, a strong possibility.
Oh, my God.
He played me.
All right. Well, don't beat
yourself up too bad about it.
- Like, maybe just a little bit.
- Because we all warned you.
Look, this is why we're going
to destroy them at the game.
We're gonna beat them so hard,
not even their mothers will be
able to ID them at the morgue.
Mouse.
I'm just saying they
can't get away with this.
They can if they have our playbook.
We need new plays.
Well, Holly can write them.
She is our coach.
- No, I'm not coaching you.
- What?
- You have to.
- We can't have that traitor coaching us.
Okay, listen. I know, he has upset you.
But he made a choice, a personal choice.
He's made a decision
that's right for him.
He's still your coach.
And if you don't have
a coach, you forfeit.
I am not coaching you. Okay?
You make the call.
There's my incandescent ingenue.
- Hi, Miss Goodwyn.
- You were brilliant last night.
Ah! I have rarely seen someone
come alive so vibrantly
before an audience.
That performance. So real. So raw.
You were inspired.
Yeah. By my dad.
Oh.
I might have thought you'd say me.
But he must have made
quite an impression.
I'm dying to know, what did he say?
That he's taking a job at UCSB,
and he has to leave Westbrook next year,
and so do I.
I have to get to class.
Wait, he's he
He's really leaving?
- I guess he didn't tell you either.
- No.
He didn't.
Yeah. It's just
That is what he does, and
Now I have to leave the
only place that I've ever
Oh
- I'm sorry.
- Oh, no. No, honey. Come here.
Come here. Oh.
Oh
Hey. Hey, listen to me.
You are going to be okay.
Okay?
So you think Carlsbad
stole our playbook?
It's my fault.
Well, not really. It's
It's Olive's fault, actually.
Can you just not? Can you
ever, for once, just not?
- It could have been McCarthy.
- Really?
Yeah, she does these tricks,
these mind games
Plus, a bunch of the Carlsbad kids
have been harassing Samantha.
- Trying to get her to stop playing.
- What?
Harassing you? How?
Calling me, mostly posting
nasty stuff on my social media.
Well that's That's just terrible.
Is that why you've been,
um, faking your ankle?
Yeah.
- Wait. How'd you know?
- Because you taped the wrong foot.
Two days in a row.
Listen to me. Don't ever do that to
your teammates again, you got it?
You've been faking it this whole time?
Yes, I know. I-I'm sorry.
And I was gonna play, I swear.
Yeah, you're definitely playing.
'Cause we need you.
And
what else do you need?
- A new playbook.
- A new playbook.
Anything else?
Going once, going twice
Fine.
- A coach.
- A coach.
Okay. Let me just get this straight.
You need someone
to write you a playbook,
and you want me to coach you again?
Yes, Coach.
I only heard one "Yes, Coach".
Yes, Coach.
Better. So, that mean you like me again?
Let's just say we don't like Carlsbad
more than we don't like you.
- Okay, good. I can live with that.
- Yeah?
Now get out. I gotta work on the
new playbook. Come on. Go, go.
So, Ms. McCarthy, huh?
That's That's no good, right?
- I mean, that's bad news for you.
- I know.
I mean, if she's truthful
that she really wants you
to come there, I mean
Is that the environment
that you wanna be in?
That's the environment I wanna change.
And when you sang
that song to the dagger,
I felt like I was the dagger.
You're such a star, Harper.
You are too, Carolyn.
No, that's Louise.
And maybe Samantha.
I'm just the fifth starter.
- There you go.
- Well Thanks.
You're number one to me.
Yeah, to you. Just you.
- Everyone thinks you're a star.
- Well, that's because I am.
But all anybody talked
about today was her.
Not for me.
Even Mother was throwing
her arms around her.
Mother's not a hugger.
So, first she tries to steal my role,
- and now she's trying to steal m
- Stop.
She's not trying to steal your mother.
Wow.
You said "stop", and I stopped.
You're the only one that's
ever made me do that.
Emma's going through a lot right now.
Do you wanna hear about it?
From you?
Sure. Tell me.
So, it's a done deal?
Looks like it.
I tried to talk him out of it, but
Parents are selfish. They
always do what they want.
But if you can't change things,
maybe try to make the best of them.
How? I have to choose between my mom
in Wisconsin and my
dad in Santa Barbara.
Well, Santa Barbara's
not too far. I have a car.
Thanks.
Your dad really loves you, you know.
You're really lucky.
Things could be worse. A lot. Trust me.
Yeah. I I do trust you.
And you're right. It's just
Why does it always have to be about him?
'Cause you're the stronger person.
You can handle it.
Yeah. It's just sometimes, I
don't wanna be the strong one.
I love you, Emma.
I love you too.
I think you're very talented.
And I know what you're going through.
You're not alone.
I will stand by you, and
I will help, if I can.
Good job, Harper.
Thank you, Carolyn.
Wow. Um
Thanks, Harper. And Mouse.
Well, then. I'll see you both
at the performance tonight.
Okay.
Now, she didn't say that I was talented.
That you, D?
Oh, I thought you couldn't
make it till next weekend.
I wanted to I needed to see you.
We have a lot to talk about, huh?
Yeah, kinda.
I'll give you two some space.
Christina told me how angry
you were when you found out.
I was in shock.
But I'm not angry anymore, I just
I don't know what it all means.
Like, everything is
the same but different.
I know, honey.
And there are no simple answers.
Christina told you most of the story,
but you must have questions,
so here I am.
How did you meet him?
Like, were you in love?
Did you get married?
We met at a school dance.
I loved him 'cause I was 16.
We never married.
Can I meet him?
Uh
Honey, I have no idea where that man is.
Were you ever going
to tell me the truth?
I told myself I would,
when the time was right.
But I guess the time never seemed right.
Because I was scared.
Look, I am sorry.
I'm sorry for not telling you.
But I'm not sorry about what happened.
I saw the life my sister and her
husband gave you, and it was
It was better than
anything I could provide.
I guess there was a
little shame in that.
But God's honest truth, I was not
ready to have a child back then.
What about now?
I already have one.
Ah, the terror of the empty parchment.
Bill Shakespeare and I have
faced that demon many a time.
Writer's block?
Yeah, I'm just I'm trying to come up
with some plays for Carlsbad,
but I don't know, I'm just
Guilty over leaving us?
I'm sorry, I was gonna tell
you. It's just, I wasn't sure
Now, you know How do you feel
about a long-distance relationship?
I don't.
I tried that with Harper's father and,
well, proudly single.
So, did you just come here to
yell at me like everyone else?
Actually, no. I came here
to propose something.
Don't worry, not marriage.
Oh, God. The look on your face.
No, I know. I'm sorry.
No, um
Look, Emma doesn't
wanna leave Westbrook.
Well, I know, but what
other options do we have?
There is one.
How about next semester,
she stays with me and
continues at Westbrook?
Well, that's very sweet of you,
but why would you do that?
Well, I don't wanna lose
one of my finest talents.
I mean, as a coach,
I'm sure you understand.
Yeah, yeah. But there's
something else going on.
What's the What's the
word you use? Subtext?
Marvyn, I'm impressed.
But why do you assume there is any?
Well, for starters, Harper and Emma,
they don't really get along too well.
I can deal with Harper. I mean,
she's more bark than bite.
As much as I'm loathe to admit
it, I'm a mother above all else.
Mmm.
And if Emma needs a home,
she has one with me.
I find her delightful.
So do I.
- Just think about it.
- Thank you. That's very sweet of you.
Okay.
It's been fun.
How could you accuse me of that?
It's the only thing that makes sense.
I could think of a million ways
that stupid playbook went missing.
Your scatterbrained friend lost it.
Someone stole it as a joke.
She left it at home.
Yeah, but none of those things
happened, because you took it.
You had motive, you had opportunity,
and it's not like you haven't
treated us like this before.
I told you I was sorry about
that. I thought we moved on.
I thought so too.
I guess that's it, then.
There's nothing I can say to
make you believe I didn't do this.
If you're innocent, prove it.
How could I possibly do that?
I don't know. Figure it out.
No point.
You're always gonna judge me
by who I was and not who I am.
When I decided to take this job
and we had to leave Ohio,
Marshall was not pleased,
and neither were our kids.
They didn't talk to me for two weeks.
- Silent treatment, huh?
- Mm-hmm.
Funny how they think that works.
I enjoy silence.
- Me too.
- Yeah?
Cheers.
Mmm.
You know, I can't believe
I'm about to say this, but
I think I'm gonna miss you, Marvyn.
I can't believe I'm
hearing you say that.
- Mmm. And George.
- Oh, George.
You know, I don't think
that he would admit it,
but I think that he thinks
- that you're becoming friends.
- Oh, yeah?
Any truth to that?
George's truth, maybe.
Ah And how about this,
uh, Carlsbad game?
You gonna win it, right?
Yeah.
- You worried?
- Mm-mmm.
I'm not worried. I have faith in you.
Which seems to be in
short supply these days.
Yeah.
Yeah, the team is still mad at me.
Hmm.
Look at how it's bothering you.
Oh, please. They're kids.
The girls will get over it.
Girls?
I remember when you
called them X's and O's.
- I didn't call them that.
- Yes, you did.
I told you you were gonna
connect with those girls.
- Oh, please.
- "Oh, please" nothing.
If you weren't, they wouldn't
be mad at you for leaving.
Hmm. I wonder.
What?
How you gonna do it?
You're a different person now. I
know you think it's gonna be easy
to go back to that old you, but I
don't think that guy exists anymore.
- No, he exists.
- Mmm.
He exists.
What?
I'm just thinking about the lies
we tell ourselves to
get through the day.
Ref?
Coach, game starts in ten seconds.
Your team needs you
out here or you forfeit.
You're coming, Coach, right?
- Five seconds. You the coach here or not?
- I don't know.
- Five.
- Coach, come on!
- Four.
- We need you to
- Three. Two.
- Coach! Come on!
One.
That's it. You're out.
- Westbrook forfeits.
- Carlsbad wins.
- Who's bad? Who's bad?
- Carlsbad! Carlsbad!
- Who's bad?
- Carlsbad!
No. No, I'm the coach.
I'm the coach. I don't forfeit.
Oh, no, it's too late, Marvyn.
You don't care about us.
What are you talking about? I'm
here. I'm standing right here.
Yes. Lying to yourself again.
You keep saying you wanna go, so go. Go!
Dad? Help me.
Emma?
- Emma, are you in there?
- I'm trapped.
Emma!
- Help me. I'm trapped.
- Emma!
- Dad, help me! I'm trapped.
- Emma!
Emma!
Help me. I'm trapped.
- Emma! Emma!
- Help me!
Help me!
Emma!
Wha
Morning.
You look tired.
Yeah, I haven't been
getting a lot of sleep.
Listen, I know how badly
you wanna stay at Westbrook,
and something's come up that
that, uh, I don't know, you may like.
You're not taking the UCSB job?
No, I'm taking the job.
This may sound crazy, but Maggie
Miss Goodwyn, uh, she offered for
you to stay with her next year.
Her and Harper? No way.
I knew you wouldn't go for it,
but you said you wanted to be
part of the decision-making,
- and so I wanted to
- I'm going with you to Santa Barbara.
- You're okay leaving Westbrook?
- No.
But for the first time, I feel
like I finally have a dad.
And I don't wanna lose that.
So, if I have to choose, and
I guess I do, I choose you.
Even if it means I have to
sacrifice everything else.
Are you sure?
- I've done it before. I can do it again.
- Okay.
See you after school.
Hiding from someone?
Oh, yeah. You.
How's your playbook coming?
- Maybe I'll stop talking.
- Coach!
I want you to meet my new mom.
Uh, Coach Barrett, Coach Korn,
this is my Aunt Angel.
- Nice to meet you both.
- So nice to meet you.
- Okay, come on. I wanna show you off.
- Go on.
So, yeah. There's a story there.
- Yeah. We've already heard.
- Cool.
She looks happy, huh?
Oh, yeah. She sure loves her.
Angel's always been the shinier penny.
Yeah, but you're always
gonna be the mom.
Try telling her that.
She looks at me and sees
a worn-out old quarter.
You know, quarters are
worth more than pennies.
- He's trouble, isn't he?
- You have no idea.
I'm losing her.
- No, you're not.
- I am.
For 16 years, every skinned
knee hurt me more than her.
I wiped every tear.
Read her every bedtime story.
Tucked her in at night. Gave
her a kiss on the forehead.
And then one day, a day I knew was
coming, a shiny penny shows up.
She's a great aunt.
But she has no idea what
it means to be a parent.
And when she goes back to her real
life and breaks Destiny's heart,
and she will because that's
that's who she is,
I'll still be there to
pick up the pieces.
They never know what
sacrifices we make, do they?
That's the job, I guess.
I gotta go find 'em.
Take care of our girl.
We will.
What?
Nothing.
Just say it. What?
You think you're the
shiny penny, don't you?
Oh!
The pressure, it's on.
I don't know the meaning of
the word "pressure", okay?
Well, do you know the meaning
of the word "choke"?
Zip it. And be ready to
take it out of the basket.
Ready?
If you need anything, I'm here.
Thank you, Coach.
Yesterday before the game, as a team,
I thought you had potential to be good.
But after watching you play,
I realized that you have
the potential to be great.
- Really, Coach?
- You think we could be great?
And I would've loved to have
been a teammate of yours.
And I love coaching you.
Is it okay if I give you a hug?
I guess someone must've rented it.
Really? Did you
Couldn't move all the way
out here and live in a hotel.
You don't usually show a lot of
interest in, you know, my things.
Well, I'm here now.
- Wanna go to dinner after?
- Sure.
I love you more than
basketball ever will.
I love you too.
Here it is. Hot off the presses.
- Oh, I thought you had writer's block.
- I got inspired.
Here, pass these out, please.
- I will.
- Thank you.
You wanted me?
You know I don't play for you, right?
I don't know why I'm here.
Well, you're gonna find out.
Sit down. I saved you a seat.
All right, here it is, girls.
This is the big one. The game changer.
The Sacrifice Play, right?
In it, our shiniest player,
who will force Carlsbad
to double-team her,
will sacrifice the ball
to our number two.
Our number two will sacrifice
it to the least expected player,
and she will make the shot.
The one who puts in all
the work and goes unnoticed.
The one who always shows
up and gets the job done.
It's kinda like what it means
to be a parent, huh?
You know, it's taken me a long time
to figure out what it means to be a dad.
At first, I thought it was about
I thought it was about providing, right?
And it is. That's part of it.
Then I thought, no, you have
to spend time with your kids.
Spend time. That's what's important.
Then I said, no, no. Discipline.
That's the most important thing.
Discipline. Setting boundaries
and rules and punishments.
And then
And then it hit me.
Being a parent is about sacrifice.
Sacrificing your own needs,
your own desires,
for the good of your child.
It's a lifetime commitment.
And at the end, you don't win a trophy
or get a banner or a shiny ring.
No.
The win, and it is worth any sacrifice,
is raising a child who is caring enough,
smart enough, who is
compassionate enough,
and who is loving enough
to be a better echo of you.
That's what it means to be a parent.
I, uh
I passed on the UCSB gig.
- What? Are you serious?
- What? No way.
Yeah, it would've been
right for my career.
You know, it was where
I thought I wanted to be,
but it was wrong for all of you.
Wrong for you, Emma.
And ultimately, I realized
it was wrong for me.
You know, I've always been
the shiny penny. Right?
The guy in the spotlight
who gets all the attention.
And it felt good.
But it feels better to be here.
To be with all of you.
And you, Holly.
And especially you, Emma.
You know, I set out to write a new
playbook for the team, and I did.
But I ended up writing a new one for me.
- I love you.
- I love you too.
What are you all staring at?
Get to work. Come on. Let's go!
Wisconsin!
You gotta hold your ground. Here.
Hit right here, Olive.
All right. Wisconsin. Let's go.
Yeah! Good, good, good, good, good!
- You have it. Yeah!
- Nice! Good, girls.
You gotta be like this.
You have to plant.
The defender goes around
her, you run right, all right?
- All right. Try it again.
- Here!
- Good, good, good, good! Go!
- Yeah!
Yeah, Samantha. Good, good, good!
Good, good, good! All right!
Don't stop on my account.
You need all the practice you can get.
I just stopped by to have
a quick word with Holly.
- Yeah.
- Office.
Let's go to my office.
Sorry to hear about your
daddy taking the plea deal.
Whew. Having to give up all that money.
- I'm fine.
- Okay, thank you.
What? I'm just saying, if you can't
afford to come here next year,
- Carlsbad is free and DI. Whoo!
- Enough. Enough!
I
I know, I know. Don't even
say it. I can't help myself.
Why are you here? Other
than to intimidate my team.
Well, I didn't hear from you
after our call the other day,
and I started to get a little nervous
that maybe you didn't
think I was serious.
So
What's this?
It's a contract to coach
at Carlsbad next year.
It's signed by me and the principal.
Wow.
The money's generous.
Yeah, it's a lot better
than you're getting here.
Just look it over. All it
needs is your signature.
Wait a minute.
Um, this says that it is valid
in the event of your retirement.
Are you retiring or not?
Oh, I definitely am.
I mean, depending on
how everything plays out.
I mean, obviously I'm not gonna
go out on a loss to that man.
Oh, I see.
So, you are retiring if you beat us?
- We're gonna beat you.
- Yeah?
How are you so sure?
Because you've been having
your team harass Samantha?
I wouldn't know anything about that.
But you know about the
playbook. The one you stole.
Hmm.
Yeah. I guess if we knew your plays,
it would make it a lot tougher on you.
What are you asking me to do here?
I'm just asking you to ponder this.
Chain's only as strong
as the weakest link.
You got a lot of weak links out there.
Might be in your best
interest to break a few.
I see.
I'd rather beat you on the court.
All right.
Just remember
it's my court.
- Who's bad?
- Carlsbad!
- Who's bad?
- Carlsbad!
Enemy territory.
Very subtle. We get it. You win a lot.
Why is it a thousand degrees in here?
It's actually only 107,
according to this thermostat
that we can't adjust.
This is so typical of
McCarthy and her dirty tricks.
She loves to play these games.
Yeah, I'm surprised there
aren't any spiders in here.
- What? She did that once.
- Oh, my
- Sirens suck!
- It's hot in here.
My God, how many of them are out there?
- Sounds like they want blood.
- Yeah. Our blood.
- Doesn't matter.
- Of course it does.
- We're the ones on the court.
- Good point, Samantha.
Louise, what's the regulation
size court? How big is it?
- 50-by-84, Coach.
- Mm-hmm.
And, Mouse, what's the
circumference of a regulation ball?
- Twenty-eight and 1/2 inches, Coach.
- Hmm.
You know it's funny, as big and as
intimidating as this place seems,
it's the exact same size court
and the exact same size ball
you guys have been
playing with all season.
And everything else, the chanting
and the heat and the banners,
it's all just noise.
So, let's Everyone gather around.
Grab each other's hand. Come on.
Let's make a circle.
All right, everybody, close your eyes.
Now, I'm gonna count down from five,
and with each number, I want you
to let the noise fade away. Okay?
Five.
Take a breath. Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
Silence.
Now slowly open your eyes.
- That worked better than I thought.
- Huh.
Look out! Go! Everyone out!
What's going on out there?
Excuse me. I'm gonna find out.
Stay here, girls.
What the hell?
Run! Run! Run!
Are those bees?
Come on.
- You okay?
- Yeah, yeah. Are you?
Yeah. Why would McCarthy
do something like this?
- No, I don't think she did.
- Well, who then?
Hey! You did this, or they did.
- They should be disqualified.
- You're crazy.
Listen, these dirty tricks are
your thing, McCarthy, not ours.
However it happened,
bottom line, if you can't provide
a venue, it's a forfeit, Coach.
Forfeit, my ass! We'll play
with the bees if we have to!
We're not gonna play with the bees.
We'll play at Westbrook.
Oh, of course. That's what you
wanted. Home court advantage.
We'll beat you without it.
We'll play in our court. No fans,
no tricks, no intimidation.
Just pure basketball. You up for it?
You can kiss my ass.
- Fine.
- Well, it's that or a forfeit, Coach.
I'm not gonna hand you DII.
You want it? You're
gonna have to take it.
Good. We'll see you in an hour.
Figures our toughest game would
come at the end of
the toughest year I
we ever had.
I wish my moms
or, I guess, my mom and my Aunt
Angel could have been there.
But I get why Coach did what he did.
It was pure basketball.
It was pure hell.
I guess this is karma
for faking my ankle.
Savannah may be nice deep down,
but you have to dig
real deep to find it.
There are a lot of ways I thought
this game would play out,
but I never imagined this.
Coach always says,
"Expect the unexpected".
And that's exactly what we got.
And it all came down to one play
The Sacrifice Play.
Four seconds.
A lot can happen in four seconds,
but we have to make it happen.
We have to be precise, we need to be
focused, we need to be intentional.
We don't have a millisecond to spare.
- You ready?
- Yes, Coach.
Good. How about you, Mouse?
It all comes down to you.
Call me Carolyn.
All right, Carolyn. Are you ready?
- Yeah, I'm ready.
- Good.
All right, let's show McCarthy
what she's got coming.
He thinks he's a big star, so
he's gonna go to his big stars.
I need you to double-team
Louise and Samantha.
Savannah, dominate.
- Come on! Hustle! Hustle!
- Go!
Finish strong. Finish
strong. Come on, now!
- Yeah!
- Go, go, go, go!
Yeah!
Yes!
What started as a story of our quest
to make history at Westbrook
became a story of the sacrifices
it took to get there.
We all had to give up
things we cared about,
but we got something much more
valuable in return: a family.
Not to mention one of these.
Oh, my God. I loved it.
I'm crying.
Of course you're crying.
You're always crying.
- It had its moments.
- A lot of moments.
Olive, it was wonderful.
I told you to make me
proud, and you did.
Thanks, Ms. Thomas. You're
the one who pushed me to do it.
Sure did. And you know what?
Next time, this is my good side.
- Copy that.
- All right.
Congratulations, everyone.
Next year, DI.
You must be happy with
the way that turned out.
I'm happy I don't have to see
that camera phone anymore.
Oh, it's not done. I still
have to shoot the ending.
I thought that was a good ending.
You shouldn't question
the director's vision.
Thank you, Mouse.
I mean, Carolyn.
I have to run too.
But before I go, tell me more about
this dream you had about me.
- Well, it wasn't about you, George.
- I don't know. It was your dream.
I was the referee, even telling you
what to do. Kind of like real life.
You don't tell me what
to do in real life.
That's exactly what
happens in real life.
- No, it doesn't.
- Yes.
- One hour a week, I tell you exactly
- No, you don't.
I have a little suggestion.
Why don't the two of you
go to the Shot Clock,
have a beer and spend
some time together?
- I love that idea.
- Yeah.
- Are you out of your mind?
- What? Make a friend.
Why don't we say tomorrow night at 8:00?
- Oh, tomorrow?
- Tomorrow, yes. I'll text you.
- You don't have my number.
- Yes, I do.
- He scares me, that man.
- He likes you
Hey. I'm not trying to crash
your party or anything,
but one of our ushers found this
on opening night of Beth Macbeth.
- Oh, my
- Our playbook.
Yeah, we use the same binder
for our tech cues manual.
Hope you didn't miss it!
So, it wasn't stolen?
No.
I have to make a call.
So, when you said you
loved me the other day,
was that just because I was leaving?
Yes. I didn't mean it at all.
Neither did I.
Just to be clear, I really, really
don't feel that way about you.
I can't stand you either.
You wanna kill him, don't you?
With every fiber in my body.
Well, I'm not hanging
around the crime scene.
- Be nice!
- All right.
Come on, Harper!
We have to feed our sourdough starter.
I hate to tell you, but there's nothing
you can do about it. She's growing up.
- I know.
- She's actually getting pretty tall.
I know. You know, if Louise's family
is too broke to send her here next year,
- there'll be an opening, and
- Marvyn.
Oh.
You know what? I should
actually take this.
You're the last person
I expected to hear from.
I'm just calling to congratulate
you on your win.
That's not very like you, Joyce.
You know me so well, Holly.
Uh-huh.
You know, the way you stood up to
me yesterday really surprised me.
You didn't take the envelope.
You didn't take the offer,
you didn't take the bait.
- It showed a lot of character.
- Thank you.
Which is why I would like you
to replace me as head coach
when I, uh, retire at
the end of the semester.
And I am retiring.
Wait a minute, are Are you serious?
As a heart attack.
Can you hold on? Hey!
- Put that phone down!
- I-I-It's It's Olive. It's an emergency.
No phone calls for you.
You owe me an hour of scrubbing
for every damn bee you released in here!
Yeah, the bees were me.
I'll explain later when
I see you. Congrats.
Scrub!
Okay.
You think about it, okay?
If you want it, the job is yours.
- So, what are you gonna do?
- I don't know.
You know, I wouldn't trust
her. She's up to something.
She's up to something. Just trying
to figure out what her angle is.
I mean, what's she
gonna get out of this?
Me.
I think she's serious, Marvyn.
And if she is?
- I mean, this is what I wanted? Right?
- Mm-hmm.
I would get to take you
on with a DI team.
Please. We already beat
them twice this season.
Yeah, not with me coaching.
- What, are you sweating?
- No, I don't sweat.
I make you guys sweat.
All right, fine. Bring it on.
All right, well This is real, huh?
Yeah.
Congratulations.
You've worked hard for this.
And I think you'll be great.
Okay, everybody, time for the
last shot of my documentary.
How does it end?
The way everything ends.
With a beginning.
Do you mind taking a photo? We
need one of us as a DII team.
Anything you wanna say, Dad?
Yeah, there is something I wanna say.
You know
It's been a
It's been a tough year, hasn't it?
For everybody.
We've all come through something.
We've all sacrificed something.
But even through the tough times,
we survived, didn't we?
We survived.
You know that saying, "Whatever
doesn't kill you makes you stronger"?
Who's feeling strong today?
I love you guys.
And I'm very proud of you.
All of you.
Sirens on three.
One, two, three!
Sirens!
