Cane s01e05 Episode Script

Brotherhood

My name is Alex Vega.
I came to America an orphan from Cuba and was adopted by Pancho Duque, a sugarcane grower and a master blender of rum.
I married his daughter Isabel.
And when the time came, Pancho gave control of the family business not to his natural born sons, Frank or Henry, but instead to me.
Perhaps it was because of the blood feud with our rivals, Joe Samuels and his daughter Ellis.
Perhaps Pancho knew that to protect our family, I will do whatever it takes.
That is both my blessing and my curse.
Previously on Cane: praying something like, "Don't get into a car accident.
" The feds are awarding a subsidy to build the fir sugar ethanol plant in Florida, and Alex wants it, to the tune of $100 million.
What, what does Papi say? Papi's retired.
It's all up to us now.
I don't think we should be spending this kind of money.
Can't this wait? The sugar ethanol moment is now.
We can be the Carnegies of the ethanol industry.
I knew you'd be against it.
And you promised it anyway.
Senator's wondering whether you can double your harvest.
Absolutely.
So I have your assurance that Duque sugar is prepared to put up $50 million of the cost? I hope we've never given you a reason to doubt us once we've made a financial commitment, Senator.
Why are you accusing my brother of murder? Whenou realize who's lying and who's tellg the truth, call me.
No, I'm not gonna do that.
That keeps us diversified.
Right.
Or we pull some money from the ethol side.
You know we're not having this conversation.
They-they don't even know how to transport their stuff and you know it.
They can't use the existing pipes - Frank.
Frank, enough.
This thing may never even happen.
The committee vote is in three days.
Then it's on to the Senate floor.
With Barnes guiding this whole thing, it's a slam dunk, all right? So just It's gonna happen.

You're right.
I'm sorry.
I shouldn't have called you.
That was not a a healthy way to go about a breakup.
Well, why aren't we talking anyway? Is it really just because I told you Alex may have played a role in a man's murder? Bye, Ellis.
Mom? What time are we going to abuelo's house? Um, we'll leave in a couple hours.
Why? Can I take a car and meet Rebecca early if Grandma's there the whole time? It'll just be like I'm grounded there instead of here.

all that time and energy on these ethanol subsidies wasted because of two men in a bathroom stall.
Now, help me with something, would you? I'm confused.
See, there are call girls, but thisella who had relations with Senator Barnes, do we call him a call boy? Or is it male prostitute? It's got no ring to it.
Do you know, Vega? Hey, he has a family.
Well, why should I care more about that than he evidently does? You know, I think I remember when my people told me of this opportunity.
They said the good sator had an appetite for male hookers.

Well, actually, that's al I want to talk about.
Details.
Facts.
You tell me everything you know.
All I'm saying is, um, it's not the best excuse.
I mean, if your mom calls, and you can't put your yoga teacher on e phone, you're busted.
You could be my yoga teacher.
Me? Mm-hmm.
I'm really not that flexible.
Really? Let's see.
Yeah, really.

Ow! Ow! Okay, okay, okay, that's enough.
Come here.
Hey, you, uh, you want a little, hmm? Huh? Uh, yeah, sure.
Nancy, can you get Mr.
Vega a cup of coffee, two sugars, please? All right, Alex, beeen us, this thing's happening.
They got blood in Santo's car.
Nice bleach job in the trunk, genius.
Too bad you missed a spot.
Any minute the white coats upstairs come down to say that they matched that blood to your friend in those pictures there.
Now, we hear that Alex Vega gavehe order to kill this poor bastard.
Vince, I told you before, I had nothg to do with this Alex, Alex.
Detective Hodges is gonna break your boy in there.
He'll offer him a deal, put this murder on you.
And make no mistake.
We know this Quiñones was a scumbag, and he deserved to die.
But what doesn't deserve to happen is that you go down for for this alone when you were just following the boss's orders, so don't betupid, Santo.
So Santo heard aboutQuiñones threatening your family, figured he'd make some points with the boss.
You had no idea he was a murderer.
He's not a murdererVince.
Give Vega up before those lab results ke it down here.
We got him.
He's got you.
You're his only play.
It's about helping yourself now.
We both know this guy doesn't look like this if not for Alex Vega.
Vega's problem Vega's solution.
Why do you think he picked you? Becae he's rich and important and you're nobody.
Listen to me, Alex, you think this guy's your friend? He's an ex-con from Cuba.
Their prisons make ours look like Sunday school.
He does this for a living- talk to cops.
And, right now, he's in there throwing you over.
Alex, you got exactly one friend in this building and he's telling you, right now, turn this Santo in.
You are s "get out of jail free" card.
In fact I think I hearega and his best friend in the world inhat office right now laughing about this.
Can-can, can you hear that? We talked about Rachel Olsen the other night Yeah.
You know, it took you a month to admit to me what you did, cheating with her behind my back.
Man, I knew the whole time, though.
You know how I knew? Inhose 30 days, you never once looked me in the eye.
You I mean, you t everything.
I'm telling you as a friend, save yourself.
y.
Habla Ingles, rit, Santo? Trthis.
"I did it for Alex Vega.
" Write it down right here.
Lab boys are quick today.
If I check to see what's behind door number one, deal's off.
What's it gonna be, hombre? Are you really gonna take the fall for this this rich guy, who doesn't give a damn if you live or die? Bad news.
Quiñones took a ride in your trunk, huh? Last chance.
You gonna put this on Vega? I don't think they're arguing about his drivg.
So, you tell me my brother's a murderer and you're making jokes, huh? I'm sorry.
I know this must be hard to take all at once.
What is all this? I mean you had him followed? Quones was an employee of ours, Frank.
I'm sure you'd do the same for one of yours.
So this guy Miguel, who told you all this, where's he? Nobody knows.
Yeah.
Your brother's ethanol dream's a shambles.
Police are closing in.
The crown is slipping from his head as we speak.
The only question is Are you gonna reach out and grab it or not? What's this? Kiss my ass.
Get outta here.
You can go home, Alex.
Find this missing witness, Miguel.
Oye! Can somebody gethat? Hey, Vince.
Hey.
How's it going? I'm hoping we're not throwing away tradition in light of you know.
'Cause whether you're pissed at me or not, I still got a crappy TV.
Got the grill going.

What's up, Vince? Nothing.
Come on, spit it out, man.
I got one nagging question.
Shoot.
You said you said you and your boy Santo were together till 00 a.
m.
on the Fourth, right? Right.
Phone records show a call from his cell phone to yours at 1:30.
Any idea how that was? I know what that was.
I took Santo to the barn to help me look case of Reserva that Papi wanted me to open.
We called u back up at the house when we couldn't find it, remember? Yeah, that's right.
The case of Reserva? Reserva.
That's right.
Anyway, I was just curious.
I got to tell you this idea I have for the rum fest.
You know, how maybe we can structure the event just a little differently this year.
Great.
Love to hear it.
If you want to catch the big bass it's all about the hook.
Is everything okay? Yeah, I'm just tnking about that Miguel.
You know what they say, it's just 90 miles away.
I just can't do this again, man.
Don't worry.
That's over.
Until he comes back on an inner tube, and starts telling stories again.
That's imposible.
Did it once.
Mr.
