Previously, on Chesapeake Shores
Honey, are you okay? Sarah?
Sarah! We had a miscarriage.
Oh, God.
If I mess up in any
way, I go back to prison.
- And you're late because ?
- I came to see you.
I wanna ask Abby O'Brien out.
I want to declare my feelings for her.
Margaret Keller.
- Connor O'Brien.
- Welcome aboard.
I have Evan asking me out
and now Jay has expressed his feelings.
About time. What are you gonna do?
I don't know if I want to
be with anyone right now.
He left the country and
the Feds are looking for him
for wire fraud and embezzlement.
Your poor mother!
You didn't tell me about
your job offer from the Getty.
- Carter arranged it.
- Is that why he set this up,
- so he could have you with him?
- Is what you think?
- It's Carter I don't trust.
- Can't you trust me?
Trust you not to leave me again?
I don't know if I can.
Okay, here goes.
Hi! Hi. It's Abby.
So I was just calling
to tell you that I
have been thinking about you
Who did you call?
Connor?
It's Connor! He's having
a heart attack! Help!
- Call 9-1-1!
- Stay with me, baby!
511 Chesapeake Shores.
Hey, it's Jess. You know the drill.
She's still not answering.
It's late. She's probably sleeping.
I don't even know what time it is.
- Leave her a message.
- I did leave her a message.
I can't believe your
father would do this.
I know. I know. I
can't believe it either,
but I can believe it too, you know?
What do you mean?
Never mind. Let's just
- What are you saying?
- Let's talk about it in the morning,
- after you've had some sleep, okay?
- What are you saying, David?
I mean, you know what Dad's like.
Does this really seem so
out of character to you?
Mom
Mom?
She hung up.
Why would I say that?
She's upset.
How could he do this?
It's okay, baby.
Shouldn't you get that?
Whatever it is, it'll keep.
This is more important.
It's okay.
I've got it, Margaret.
Oh
I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I just
listened to your messages
how is he, how's Connor?
He is in surgery.
Surgery? What happened?
He had a heart attack.
That's all we know. We
just we have to wait.
Okay
I hate waiting.
Hi. How is he?
What's happened? Anything?
Nothing since you called us from
the parking lot two minutes ago.
Mom, I'm sorry you couldn't reach me.
- I had a thing going on.
- It's okay, honey.
- You're here now.
- Yeah.
- I'm gonna call Nell and check on the girls.
- Good.
What thing did you have going on?
Tell you later.
Fine.
Nobody's telling me anything tonight.
- I'm sorry. It's complicated.
- I know.
Abby called somebody tonight.
Said she wanted to "give it a try."
She didn't She did?
- She did.
- Who?
Who did she call?
- Evan? Jay?
- I don't know.
Meg um
tonight at the campfire, I
I said some things
I don't know what got into me.
What I said about not
trusting you, I didn't mean it.
Yes, you did.
Maybe I did, but I
don't want to mean it.
We'll talk. Later.
Abby, hey.
- How's Connor? Any news?
- Uh, nothing yet.
Huh.
She called Jay.
Really?
- I was "Team Evan" all the way.
- Hmm.
- Mr. O'Brien?
- Yes?
- I take it you're his family?
- Yes.
Uh, Connor is out of immediate danger.
"Immediate"?
Connor suffered a severe
myocardial infarction.
We also found deep-vein
thrombosis in his leg
- and blood clots in his lungs.
- Oh!
Now, we've stabilized him,
but we may need to do more.
"More"?
Possibly angioplasty,
possibly bypass surgery,
but we don't know yet time will tell.
In the meantime,
he will need rest.
The heart muscle begins to heal quickly.
It usually takes about
eight weeks to recover.
- "Usually"?
- But he will recover?
We'll need to put him on a regimen
of blood thinners and statins.
He'll have to change his
diet, cut out alcohol,
- and begin an exercise program.
- Yes, of course.
- Anything.
- But he'll be okay?
As I said, time will tell.
Can we see him?
He is conscious and he's
asking to see his family.
- Oh, great.
- Oh, hold on a minute.
He's He's still in the ICU. He
can only have one visitor at a time.
He can have two visitors.
Okay. Two visitors. This way.
We'll let you know how he is.
Tell him we're here!
Hey, guys.
Hi, son.
- Hey! Nice to see you smiling.
- Yeah!
Well, why not? I'm alive.
You can't have better news than that.
Look, um
I know that I have to make some changes,
and they're not all gonna be easy
but I'm still alive.
Yeah.
And, uh as far as I'm concerned,
there's no better news than that.
"Any day above ground is a good day."
- That's what my father used to say.
- Grandpa Charlie.
Yeah.
- I barely remember him.
- Well, you were very young when he
Heart attack, wasn't it?
Yeah.
How old was he?
He was 58.
Well gives me another
30-odd years? So
that's not bad.
Oh, honey.
- Love you, Pops.
- Love you, too, kid.
Huh.
Hmm.
- Hey. I just heard.
- Hey.
How is he, Abby?
Uh, I haven't seen him.
Maybe she called Evan.
- Hi, Jay.
- Hey, Evan.
Mom and Dad are in there with him now.
It'll be okay.
- That's what Jay said.
- Well, not exactly like that.
You're a teacher.
In situations like this,
I'm pretty clumsy with words.
You did okay.
Could you tell Connor I was here?
You don't want to see him?
They won't let me in. I'm not family.
Come.
May I help you?
Yes. We want to see Connor O'Brien.
We only allow immediate
family in the ICU.
Yeah. We're his sisters.
I'm adopted.
I should be home soon.
Yeah.
I'll send him your love, if I see him.
Why don't you try to
get some sleep, okay?
We'll get through this. All of this.
I love you, Sarah.
Iraq or Afghanistan?
Afghanistan.
Is it that obvious?
I served in Iraq.
I still tie my shoelaces
ladder-lace style too.
Though, I don't wear
boot-bands very often.
Old habits are hard to break.
Once a trooper always a trooper.
'Kay, well, I'm gonna let you guys talk
and I'm gonna go confuse
that nurse some more.
- Hello, O'Brien.
- Hello, Keller.
You look like hell.
How am I ever going to forgive you?
Wait. Why?
That kiss you almost killed me.
Hey, come here.
I know this must be
really weird for you.
I mean, we just started
whatever we started, and
now you got plunged into this
whatever "this" is.
What I'm saying is,
I know you didn't sign
up for any of this, so,
you know, if you wanna
just call it quits
I would totally understand.
I'd kiss you again if I
thought you could handle it.
Call me if you need anything.
- Anything at all.
- I will.
And if you talk to him, please
please let me know how he is.
- Yes.
- Okay.
Take care of yourself as well, Abby.
Thank you, Mandrake.
Oh I can't believe this.
Mandrake, I have 35 voicemails.
Who even leaves voicemails anymore?
Would you like me to screen
them and give you a report, sir?
- If you wouldn't mind?
- My pleasure.
You can connect to my Bluetooth, sir.
Oh, you are a lifesaver.
I try to return the favor.
Huh. That is interesting.
What is interesting?
Well, he didn't say anything
about the message I left him.
Who didn't say anything
about the message you left?
- Tell us! Please!
- Who did you call?
- That was fast.
- I'm sorry,
but I believe there's one message
you want to listen to right away, sir.
Hi! Hi. It's Abby.
So I was just calling
to tell you that I
have been thinking about you and, um
I think maybe we should give it a try.
Call me back. Bye.
Quite right, Mandrake.
Quite right! Play that again.
Of course, sir.
Hi! Hi. It's Abby. So
I was just calling
My poor mom.
Oh, David.
Connor's gonna be okay, you know.
He will.
Yes, he will.
I think it's best he stays
at the house when he gets out.
- Your house.
- Yeah.
That way, Nell and Abby and
I, we can take care of him.
- And me.
- And you
Wait a minute. Does this
mean that you're not gonna
Take the job at the Getty?
How can I? It'll have to wait.
It's not because of what I said, is it?
Don't give yourself
that much credit, Mick.
My son needs me.
I won't leave him this time.
Hey, Megs?
Yeah?
I'm glad you're here.
Hello.
Meow!
Mandrake? Do we have a cat?
Not to my knowledge, sir.
Well we do now.
Should we name it?
That's up to you, sir.
But what?
Cindy Clawford?
Mm?
Katy Purry?
Well, first of all,
sir, he's more of a
Catt Damon or LeVar Purrton.
Oh! Right.
And, secondly,
why not give him a more
respectable cat name
like Felix?
"Felix."
That's a wonderful, wonderful name.
Now, thirdly, he just
wandered in here, sir.
We should put the word out
in case he belongs to
one of the neighbors.
You're right. Hey! He chose one.
Mm. Evidently canned albacore
is his meal of choice.
He's got good taste.
Well, the fact that he
wandered through your window
indicates that he knows which
side his proverbial bread
- is buttered on.
- Don't be a cynic, Mandrake.
I do have that tendency.
Sir, might you be using this cat
as a distraction to think
about your next move?
You are perceptive as always.
Abby left me that voicemail
before I saw her at the hospital.
She must be wondering why I
didn't say anything about it.
- Very likely.
- What do I do?
I can't call her this morning.
She's worried about her brother.
- That's true.
- But if I wait too long,
she'll think I'm avoiding the issue,
that I'm not interested but I am.
- It's a predicament, sir.
- Yeah.
So Dad says that Connor
will be home in a few days.
I can't believe it's only been,
what, like, nine hours?
Mm. I don't even know.
Makes you think.
I don't like to think about that.
Still
every day is a gift.
It does put things in perspective.
Like all the little things
that we were worried about
- seem pretty insignificant.
- Mm.
Like who you called last night?
Like that.
Who did you call?
Evan.
Ah.
Jess is Team Evan.
- There were teams?
- Yeah, there were teams.
Of course, there are always teams.
Well, it's not like it matters.
He avoided mentioning
it at the hospital,
so I have my answer.
How 'bout I text her?
Perhaps, but what would you say?
"Just listened to your voicemail
Yay! TTYL."
Sir.
Yeah, that was terrible. Sorry.
I mean, he could've at least texted me.
Maybe he thought it was too impersonal?
I did say that I wanted
to give us a chance,
and he just asked me on a date
- maybe he just wanted a date?
- Maybe.
Maybe I sounded too serious.
Maybe I scared him off.
I don't know Evan that well, but, hmm
doesn't seem like the
"scaring off" type.
I think I'm gonna wait a few days,
till I know that
everything's okay with Connor,
then I'll speak to her
in person. No texting.
I think that would be wise, sir.
The beginning of a relationship
is a delicate thing.
You don't want to put
pressure on it or
Meow!
I see.
Mm.
Okay, an extra-hot, triple-shot,
no-foam oatmilk latte for me,
and a plain black coffee for you.
- Wow. That's us in a nutshell.
- Yeah!
So, how's your brother?
He's gonna, I think he's
gonna make a full recovery.
- Oh, great.
- I hope.
Yeah.
How are things with your parole officer?
Oh, um, good. Yeah.
He said he was very sorry
- for accusing me of violating my parole.
- Really?
- No. No, he didn't.
- Oh.
No. He's gonna be
harder on me than ever.
Yeah, that's the way it works.
Who does this guy think he is?
Oh, he's my personal Javert.
Yeah, I guess so!
Very impressive Les Mis
reference, by the way.
Oh.
You know, in prison,
there wasn't much to do
other than read and,
um, stare at the walls.
Yeah, I went through everybody
in the prison library,
from Austen to Dickens to Elliot
to Hugo to Mary Shelley.
And then you stopped
at Mary Shelley? Why?
- I got paroled.
- Oh!
Got it.
Yeah, but I am reading
through Vonnegut now
- that is good stuff.
- Wow.
Oh, I was gonna show you some
of what I've been working on,
but now I'm just scared.
Don't be.
I like everything.
Hmm. Even Hemingway?
Even Hemingway.
- Wow!
- Yup.
Sorry.
That was my sister.
Oh, don't apologize. How is she?
How do you think?
The press is having a field day.
Everybody loves it when the rich
get what they have coming to them.
Don't say that.
She's even more upset
with Dad than I am.
She's afraid he's gonna
take us down with him.
- So am I.
- David.
You are not alone in this.
Remember that. I'm here.
Thank you.
- I think I really needed to hear that.
- Yeah.
- Busy?
- Uh always. What's up?
I want to talk about the
pre-opening hotel expenses.
- 'Kay.
- Not really.
I want to talk about that
voicemail you left me.
Oh! Uh yeah. There's no need.
Just don't don't worry about that.
So you don't want to give us a chance?
That was a poor choice of words.
I just meant, "I accept
your offer of a date."
Just Just a date.
Okay.
I didn't get your
voicemail until last night,
after the hospital,
so the fact that I didn't
say anything about it then
Was just a misunderstanding?
Yeah.
We've had a lot of those.
Charming, isn't it?
You know, in movies, it's charming.
In real life, it's just annoying.
Well, yeah, we can agree
to disagree on that.
But
you do want to go on a date?
Yes, I do.
I am so glad.
Now, I propose we make it two dates.
- You do?
- Mm-hmm.
Yeah, you see, on the first date,
we're bound to be a little nervous,
trying to put our best foot forward,
but on the second date,
we'll be more ourselves.
Are you negotiating our date?
I am.
All right. Two dates it is.
But I I can't do it right now.
Oh, of course not.
No, you have to see if Connor's okay.
A first date at a time T.B.D..
I would like to arrange the
details of the first date.
Do you agree?
If I can arrange the
details of the second.
It's a deal.
Deal.
Be seein' you.
Interesting.
Yeah, so Connor's doing better.
- Mm.
- Man, it's been hard to see him like this.
Yeah, I can imagine.
- Bree?
- Mm-hmm?
I like where this is going.
I mean us.
I do, too.
- Yeah?
- Mm-hmm.
I mean, I know I'm not your usual type.
Ah, well, you know what?
Turns out my usual type
never really agreed with me, so.
Did you have a type?
Oh, uh
I guess? Yeah, I just
had trouble finding her.
- Really?
- Mm-hmm.
Why? What was your type?
Oh, uh let's see.
Smart,
hot,
best-selling novelist
Okay.
They don't grow on trees, you know.
Why didn't I put that in my
description on my dating profile,
instead of "tired, nervous
writer," I'll never know.
Hey, Dad.
Hey!
- How're you feeling?
- Me?
Connor's coming home today. I feel fine.
Hmm. How's your arm?
Ah, it's okay. I just can't
wait to get this thing off.
Hey, can I ask you something,
as a father who's
apparently out of the loop?
Sure.
Is there something going on
between Bree and Luke Tatum?
You know
that's probably a question
you should ask Bree.
Or Luke.
You like Luke, don't you?
Oh, I like him very much.
He has a past, though.
Yeah.
Bree knows about that.
- Connor's here!
- He's back!
You're back!
- Are you okay?
- Yeah.
I'm okay, I'm getting better.
I want you to take it easy, Connor.
I'm taking it easy.
Here, let me get this set up for you.
I don't need help sitting on the couch.
Oh, yeah? All right. Let's see it, then.
Oh. Ta-dah.
- How'd I do?
- Ah, give you eight out of ten.
Honey, have some chicken soup.
Nell made it.
- Ah.
- Can I get you anything else?
- Mm-mm.
- You sure?
He's supposed to rest, not
be the center of attention.
- Yeah.
- Do you need to lie down?
Yeah, I could use some sleep.
Well, maybe you should
just go to your room.
- The guest room?
- No, your room.
Yeah. I'd like that.
Oh, can you bring my soup?
Sure.
Here.
Yep. Oh!
- Come on, girls.
- Thanks, man.
He's tough. He'll mend.
I was just remembering
him learning how to walk.
Excuse me.
- You David Peck?
- Yes, but I'm not talking to the press.
Oh, I'm-I'm not with
the press. Goodness, no.
I'm Agent Malik. I'm with the
Federal Bureau of Investigation.
So, tell me, have you had any
contact with your dad recently?
Nope. Haven't heard from him
since before he left the country.
How do you know he left the country?
It's all over the Internet.
Right.
And you believe everything
you see on the Internet?
What do you want?
Me?
Nothin'.
Look, if you think I'm
shielding my father,
you are very much mistaken.
He deceived me as much as everyone.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, well, that's what
I'd expect you'd say.
Here's my card.
You'll let me know if you hear
from Dennis Peck, won't you?
Sure.
- I'll give you a call.
- Yeah. Do that.
'Cause, you know, if you don't,
you'd be aiding and, uh
What's that word?
"Abetting." Abetting a felon.
You wouldn't want to do that, would you?
It's beautiful. Beautiful garden.
Hey.
What was that about?
Nothing.
All right now, you're saying,
when I amass enough wheat
and corn for my farm,
then the game gets fun?
It's already fun.
Just roll the dice and play.
Hello. You wanted to see me?
- Is this a good time?
- Yeah.
Oh, hey, I love this game!
And you're cornering the wheat market.
But we're getting more corn.
All right!
Wait. Am I missing
something? I must be
I must be missing something.
I need you to go through
some office stuff,
but I'd hate to interrupt the fun.
No! Please. Please do.
Carrie. You can take my turn.
Oh, boy. I'm going for oats!
Oats? Ooh daring.
I haven't seen you in so long.
- Yeah, it's been a while.
- How are you feeling?
A lot better.
You still look like hell.
That's what I like about you
you always know how
to sugar-coat things.
I learned that from my mom.
Oh, I can't wait to meet her.
- Careful what you wish for.
- Ooh.
Here's the mail and some
things you have to sign.
Right.
Here you go.
- Always thinking.
- I try.
You wanted to talk to me?
Yeah. Yeah, I do.
So, I spoke with Dr. Yang
and she says that it's
gonna be a couple months
before I can go back to work.
Maybe more.
Okay.
So, you see,
I'm afraid I'm gonna have
to close down the office.
And?
I know this is really rough on you,
but I think you're gonna
have to find some other work.
I don't think so.
- You don't?
- No.
I can keep things going at
the office for a little while.
We don't have any really
hard cases yet, and
I'm a paralegal.
I know that.
And I'm scheduled to take
the bar exam this month.
- So you're almost a lawyer?
- Almost.
If you just sign a few papers,
I can do the heavy lifting.
I should be able to keep things
going for at least a month.
And then?
Well, and then, I bet you'll be back.
You're a very resilient man, O'Brien.
Thank you, Keller.
Okay.
- Let's see how it goes.
- Yeah?
Yeah. At least for a few weeks.
I'm fine with that.
Oh, and one other thing.
How was that?
My heart's beating a
little bit faster, but
in all the right ways.
Great.
We'll check on that again in a few days.
The sorghum is mine!
I do not get that game.
Hey, Luke. How's it going?
Oh, hey, Mick. Very well.
That's good to hear.
How's the inventory?
Ah, good. Almost done,
and we could use, uh,
a few more cocktail
napkins, it looks like.
Oh. We should do something about that.
Let's do something about that!
Why don't you order some?
Sure, yeah. I'll do that.
Great!
- You okay?
- Oh, living the dream.
- Huh.
- Hey, um.
- I had a question for you.
- Sure.
Have you been seeing my daughter?
Uh
- what?
- I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
Let me be more specific.
Have you been seeing Bree O'Brien?
I think I have. Yeah.
You think?
Well, it's early days yet.
Um, we're just getting
to know each other.
Oh. And you like her?
I like her very much.
And she likes you?
I think she does.
Good, good.
If you ever hurt her,
I will track you down,
and I will make you very, very sorry.
I believe you, Mick.
Good!
Okay.
Oh, I wanted to ask you one other thing.
- Yeah?
- Do you know Jordan?
- The manager?
- Yeah.
Well, he's quitting. Or his
wife got a job in Roanoke
either way, he's moving.
Can you think of somebody who could
take his place on short notice?
Uh, yeah, I can think about it.
Okay, well, until you
come up with someone,
you'll have to do it.
- What?
- Yeah. I'm offering you the job, Luke.
Take it.
Mick, I I don't know what to say.
Say you'll do it.
- I'll do it.
- Good. Great.
Mick, I
I don't know how to thank you
for everything you've done for me.
All of you, your whole family.
Wow, you guys have changed my life.
- Well, just do one thing for me, will ya?
- Sure.
Don't forget to order those napkins.
I won't.
Hey, Dad.
Hey! Dad!
- Oh! Hey.
- Hey.
Hey!
Um
did you give Luke Tatum a promotion?
I did.
Did you also tell him that he'd better
be good to me or you'll kill him?
Well, not the "kill" part,
but he's a smart guy
I guess he could read between the lines.
You know I can take
care of myself, right?
But thank you anyway.
Why didn't you tell
me you were seeing him?
Uh
well, one, I-I didn't know I had to,
and two, um, you know, I, uh
guess I'm not quite ready to
share it with the world yet.
Well, one, yes, you do.
And two, why not?
I don't know.
Because he went to prison?
Maybe?
But I mean, why should that matter?
I mean, Martin went to Yale,
and he was a total jerk, so.
Well, there is that.
We haven't done this in forever.
- Ice cream in bed?
- Mm-hmm.
Sister time ♪
Who goes first?
With what?
- The sharing.
- Oh. Um
No. Not that. The
sharing personal stuff.
Oh! You.
Okay.
David is heartbroken about
the stuff going on with his father.
I've never seen him so down
- and angry.
- That's rough.
The weird part is, I have
to be the one to comfort him.
It's usually him comforting me.
I don't know if I'm up for it.
Hey! You are up for it.
Yeah, you're stronger
than you think you are.
I'd better be.
- Now you.
- Mm.
Okay, well,
haven't written anything in
a few months, as you know,
but then, this morning,
this whole short story
just popped into my head.
- That's great.
- Mm-hmm.
- Can we read it?
- No.
Haven't written anything down yet.
It needs to live in my
brain for awhile first.
- Wait a minute.
- Does this story have
anything to do with the family?
- No. Not this time.
- Thank goodness.
Your turn.
Well
- Saved by the bell!
- No!
Mandrake.
Oh I wish I had a Mandrake.
If I had a Mandrake,
I could do anything.
If you had a Mandrake, you
wouldn't have to do anything.
- Same diff.
- Hello, Mandrake.
Hello, Abby.
Are you still interested in
going on a date with Evan?
I'd be much more interested
if he asked me himself.
It's just that he knows
this is a difficult time for you.
He doesn't wish to intrude.
But he doesn't mind if you do?
