Chicago P.D. (2014) s09e03 Episode Script

The One Next to Me

1 [DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Drop his weapon! Roy is gone, and you gotta accept what happened.
The feds will put his face on the wall, but they will never see or hear a thing.
Like it never happened.
But it did happen.
Now you got to make peace, live your life.
Hailey, will you marry me? Yes.
- Detective.
- Detective.
I got you something.
Hm.
So I guess I'll see you at home.
Mm-hmm.
Yo, you guys know we all know you're doing it, right? - Doing it? - Doing it.
What's up? Jay and Hailey are moving in together.
Tonight, I think, yeah? I'm a trained observer.
You do know we all know you're together, right? Yeah, I'm aware of that.
What I don't get is why that's a non-event, but this is a thing.
We've been staying at each other's apartments for months.
Well, 'cause then you were just, like, doing it.
- Now you're doing it.
- It's the same thing.
Well, it's definitely not the same thing.
For instance, did you know that sometimes women use the medicine cabinet to store medicine? Hailey, got a sec? Let me tell you something right now.
I look around this room, you know what the first thing I think is? Here's a bunch of relationship experts.
Making some big changes in your life.
Yeah, I am.
We are.
Okay, apparently, the FBI got a tip.
Passed it onto CPD.
Seems a citizen spotted Roy Walton at a hardware store in Dallas.
That seems unlikely.
Yeah, chances are, the FBI knows it's not true.
They're just dropping it in our laps to see who flinches.
Look, whatever it is, I wanted you to know because [APPREHENSIVE MUSIC.]
Now, more than ever, it's important that we stay the course.
Do nothing unusual.
Say nothing to anyone.
Yep.
All units in the citywide, bottle gang going at it, 77th and Berkeley.
Armed robbery in progress, 4800 South Drake.
Another one? More calls coming in on Drake.
Reports of an explosion, CFD responding.
Another one.
50-21 Henry, plainclothes officers responding.
Advise units to proceed with extreme caution.
[INTENSE MUSIC.]
50-21 Henry and George on the scene.
Call's bona fide, keep the cars rolling.
Police, where are they? - Took off towards Pulaski.
- Three of them? Yeah, they're gone, they blasted the doors, - took the cash, took off.
- Getaway car? Uh, four door dark, that's all I got.
They're over here.
Oh my God, help her! Please help her! Okay, okay, okay! Okay.
- Oh, God! Get it out! - No, no, no! No, no, don't touch it, don't touch it! If you pull it out, it could kill her.
What's your daughter's name? Sydney.
Sydney Rose.
Okay, Sydney Rose, we got you, we got you.
Do you hear me? It's gonna be okay.
50-21 George emergency, roll an ambo to Drake.
I got got a tender age female.
She's got a projectile wound.
Advise Med, extremely critical.
Hey, it's gonna be okay.
Stay with us, stay with us.
It's okay.
[MOTHER CRYING.]
- Same MO? - Yeah.
We're pulling video to prove it, but it's our robbery crew, definitely.
Same as the last three.
The armored car pulls up to service the bank.
One of the offenders pulls in front of them with a truck to block them in and then boom.
Two offenders pull up behind him, blow the door before the guards have time to engage.
They reach inside, it's grab and go.
Made out with 800 grand, give or take.
We got a flash out on the getaway car.
Truck's hot? Yeah, it's confirmed stolen last night down in Chatham.
We're working on surveillance.
We recovered a coffee cup on the console, we'll see if anything pops.
It's going through DNA and prints now.
We'll find the route that the armored vehicle took to get here, we'll pull traffic cams.
All right, do we know what kind of explosives these guys used? Bomb and Arson, they're sending scraps and remnants to Joliet, but it sounds like they're pretty backed up.
Well, get up there in person, light a fire under their ass.
We got blood in the street now.
Let's get on top of this.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
How's the little girl? She's out of surgery in Med, touch and go.
All right, three men.
Body armor, big-ass weapons, professional crew.
Everything's a match.
Body type, weaponry, MO.
This is definitely our crew.
Yeah, they use stolen vehicles, torch them.
We got no footage of them stealing the truck that they used.
And the prints on the coffee cup came back to the owner of the vehicle, he's happy as hell to get his truck back.
Sends his regards.
We eliminated the possibility of them having a man on the inside.
Every robbery has been a different armored truck company.
Look, we got bombs going off middle of the city, broad daylight, all on video more clear than I get trying to watch the Sox.
So please, please tell me we're not circling the drain here.
Oh, I don't think we are.
Joliet ID'd the explosive material used in the robbery as military grade C4.
And the chemical footprint matches a batch stolen from DF Tubbs.
The army base? Army reserve.
It's out in the boonies.
Yeah, these devices are military style sticky bombs.
They go way back.
We used them to bust into tanks in World War II.
Okay, so the robbers, they build the devices a certain way.
The lab reverse engineers them, and this is their best guess.
They take C4, and they pack it into the light bulbs.
Then they wrap the light bulbs in these cotton socks, then they dip the cotton sock into this gunk.
It's it's the sticky stuff made from Boiled tree bark.
Yeah, that's right.
Juniper trees.
No, that's not right.
It's made from, um, hold on.
Eastern red cedar.
Which is not actually a cedar.
It's a juniper.
It's the only variation of juniper that grows in Illinois.
They should be down in a sec.
And thanks a lot for coming our way.
You guys are doing us a solid.
Wouldn't mind some answers ourselves.
Not every day 10 bricks of C4 walks out the door.
I really, really hope that's true.
There you go.
Staff Sergeant.
Detectives, here's the list you asked for.
The manifest of every man and woman who was on base the weekend the C4 was stolen.
- Whoa.
- That's the problem.
There were 4,000 airmen and personnel from other services in and out of there.
We were doing a huge training exercise.
Probably not a coincidence.
That would have been the time to do something like this.
We gave up trying to figure out who ran off with it.
Yeah, sure, thanks for your time.
Happy hunting.
How are we gonna get through this list? There's so many names.
I'm just looking for one.
Elliot Knox? What, you know him? Warsaj Kalay.
What? Afghanistan.
Okay, so, outside of the Taliban, there aren't many people who would use this exact recipe to make a sticky bomb.
One of them is Elliot Knox.
The other one is me.
Knox and I did two tours together in Afghanistan.
He was EOD.
His job was to disable and defeat enemy IEDs.
We hit it off at first.
We're both from Chicago, and I thought he was a good guy.
And then? Turned out, not a good guy.
We scrubbed Knox.
He's had a hard time of it.
Divorce, bankruptcy, bounced around a lot.
It was hard to pin down an LKA 'cause he's had trouble paying rent.
Doesn't have much of a sheet.
Nah, he was rolled up eight years ago, for a five-finger discount.
He walked out of a QuickMart with a hoagie.
That's it, clean ever since.
So I haven't seen this guy in 12 or 13 years, but he's a pretty good match for one of our offenders.
This guy right here.
I'd bet almost anything Knox stole the C4.
He's making the bombs, and he's using them to rob the trucks.
He know you're a cop? There's no reason why he would.
All right, so let's track him down, see if you're right.
Don't think we've met.
Halstead, 75th Rangers.
Alex Argrett, 5th Cav.
Hey, thank you.
Losing an arm? No, man, for signing up to go some place where you could lose an arm.
Glad you found us.
Yeah, actually, I've been to this group a few times.
When I first got home.
I don't know why I stopped coming.
Welcome back then.
That true? Jay really used to come here? I don't know.
There he is.
There's Knox.
Heavenly father, bless and protect these veterans.
Gave so much for so many.
All right, here we go.
ALL: Not for kings.
Not for glory.
For the one next to me.
All right, let's get some chairs.
Halstead, it's Knox.
Knox? Dude, small world.
Hey, bro, if you want me to split, I can because I'm here all the time, so.
No, no, we're good.
I got past that a long time ago.
It's great to see you, man.
Thanks, yeah, uh, sit over here.
Yo, this is Ricky Halstead.
I haven't seen this dude in forever and a day.
But no finer man to have next to you in the sandbox.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Ricky? Knox just called him Ricky Halstead, right? - Yeah, he did.
- What's that about? I have no idea.
Couple old buddies find each other in here.
You want to share? Well, Ricky and I did two spins together.
Kunar, Warsaj Kalay, up and down the Korangal Valley.
And that that's the valley of death.
And that's, you know, you know.
I got back from that so messed up I couldn't eat spaghetti.
'Cause the noodles and the red sauce looked like guts, you know, and I wasn't alone.
Most of our guys got Got pretty messed up.
Everybody except Ricky.
And I mean, we were getting these firefights, like like, two, three a day, RPGs flying in, and Halstead is just [WHISTLES.]
I used to think it's why this guy became a sniper.
Man, he doesn't have the same heart rate as us mere mortals, you know? Same body temp.
Dude's Guy's like a reptile.
[LAUGHTER.]
I mean it.
Later, men! Hey, thanks, Alex, take it easy.
All right, man.
Yeah, Ricky, hold up.
Are you doing okay, bro? There's got to be some reason you came into the gym today after all these years.
Yeah, I don't know.
It's been a hard time.
You know, I'm going through the process of moving right now, and I found some old photos from when we were in country.
I guess it brought some stuff up.
Yeah.
Look, man, do you You want to hang out later? I can bring the photos over, you'd get a kick out of them.
We could, I don't know, whatever, drink too much, talk about our screwed up lives.
[LAUGHS.]
Yeah, I think I remember how to do that.
All right, man.
All right, brother, see you.
All right, I'm on with Knox at 18:30 at his house up near Loyola.
So two hours ago, an undercover from Bomb and Arson went for a little dog walk.
They had a canine sniff around Knox's property for any indications of bomb making material.
The dog gave a positive at a vent coming from the basement, but passive.
Okay, not enough for a search warrant.
Right, so the plan is, I'm going to gain access to Knox's home.
You guys will be outside in support.
Hopefully, I find some evidence and then Crash the party.
What's the go word? - Juniper.
- Good.
So we grab Knox, flip him, and break this thing open.
Let's do it.
Jay.
What's the deal with this Knox guy? He's something else.
You know I can tell you hate him, right? No, I don't think about him at all.
It was kind of nice listening to you talk about the army.
You never do, right, Ricky? Don't call me that.
Okay, I'm sorry.
No, don't apologize either, just Just don't call me that.
Oh, wow.
I forgot about that pipe hitter.
- What's his name? - Muldoon.
[KNOX CHUCKLES.]
He's the who actually thought the army handed out Camaros when you finish boot camp.
He looks like it too.
Look at his face.
I gotta take a leak.
You want a fresh one? Yeah, yeah.
Bathroom's by the front door.
Oh, man.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
[DOOR CLICKS OPEN.]
The hell are you doing down here, Ricky? Damn it.
Get frosty, looks like he got made.
Copy you.
Chaspaki mine, sticky bombs.
You still using juniper trees? That's the go word, let's go.
[INTENSE MUSIC.]
It's no business of yours.
What is all this? I think it's time for you to go, man.
Dude, are you in some kind of trouble? - Right now, Rick.
- Whoa, whoa, okay.
- Come on.
- Okay, man.
- Just move to the door.
- Okay, I'm going.
Chicago PD! - Where are you? - Back off! Basement basement! Back up, get against the wall.
I'm a cop, you're under arrest.
Turn around.
Turn around, put your hands out.
Jay, you good? We're down here! Do not move.
This is what do you do now, huh? You come into that gym, you use everybody in there.
Then you come into my home and you spit in my face.
It's a good fit for you, Ricky.
Lets you chase the past.
Got nothing to do with the past.
It's got nothing to do with me at all.
Yeah, God forbid somebody can't live up to your standards, right? - [PHONE CHIMES.]
- Let's move.
You might want to rethink your approach - before we get upstairs.
- Screw you, man.
There was a little girl at the bank when the bomb went off.
- She get hurt? - She just died.
How old was she? Nine.
Name was Sydney Rose.
How'd she die? Shrapnel.
The device you built killed this kid.
So you know what happens now, right? Yeah, I think I can put two and two together.
Okay, good.
Look, nobody was supposed to get hurt.
I swear to God that was all Listen, Knox.
The only reason you're sitting here right now? 'Cause I want to hear your story.
I mean, I really want to hear it.
But let me tell you something.
One lie, one omission, it's game over, - you understand me? - Yeah.
Is that you? [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
- No.
- No.
Is that you? No, I swear on my mother's grave this is not me.
Listen, I make the explosive devices and then I sell them.
They do the rest.
Yeah, okay, they.
So who's they? I don't know.
I don't know who they are.
Listen to me, I'll help you.
I'll tell you everything I know.
I meet one guy, and I sell to him Okay, what's his name? Matthew Davis, 29 years old, no priors.
According to Knox, Davis is his only contact.
Mm-hm.
And all of Knox's alibis check out.
He wasn't at one damn robbery.
So Knox meets with Davis, but he's not gonna be able to testify that Davis is one of the robbers.
Right, Davis buys the bombs.
Maybe he sells them to the crew.
We got a ping order in, connect Davis to the robberies that way, but other than that, we got no proof.
All right, so bottom line.
We got zero evidence tying any offender to any of this.
Sorry for the interruption.
The feds have now left three messages.
They're looking for you.
They want to confirm all Roy Walton's vehicles, make and model.
- Send them the case files.
- That's what I said.
And I'm pretty sure the new round of fed boys can't read, nor can they read my tone, so please call them back.
Everything good, boss? Yeah, they're just confirming for their bulletins.
Okay, so we use Davis.
I mean, Knox is already fully cooperating.
We have him reach out to Davis, sell him some explosives.
We keep flipping on up.
All right, Jay, advise State's Attorney - we got a cooperating defendant.
- Yeah.
Hailey, brief Knox, wire him up.
Before you meet up with Davis, hold this button down, and then this indicator light will come up.
That's it.
Can you say something? So you're Halstead's partner, huh? Yep.
Guess you must know him pretty good.
Pretty good.
I love that guy, you know.
Even now.
We had a good thing, back in the day.
[SENTIMENTAL MUSIC.]
What happened? War happened.
I made a mistake, and it was bad.
One look at Ricky's face, I knew it was bad.
It's the job, you know? Puts you in these places where the right thing is wrong and the wrong thing is is right.
[PHONE BUZZES.]
Matthew Davis.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
- - So what happens now? You go home, you wait.
You hope the crew gets back in touch with you or we find another way.
But above all else you hope like hell I don't find out that you tipped them off.
That's what you think happened here? If you didn't, explain to me why they pulled the plug.
Because I'm expendable, Ricky.
To the army, to these guys, to you.
You watch, soon as my use expires you'll kick me to the curb.
I'm bringing you home, aren't I? - You're free man, right? - Come on, man.
We know the terms of my deal.
I get to stay a free man if you find the robbery crew, and right now, as nearly as I can tell, you got nothing.
Shut up.
Get out of the car, go inside, and you wait by the phone.
You answer it on the first ring, you understand me? You do anything stupid, I'm gonna slap the cuffs back on you myself.
Get out of my car.
Yes, sir.
Little harsh.
You don't know him like I do.
No, but he was making some sense to me.
Units on the citywide, we have an armed robbery in progress.
Armored vehicle, North Park Bank, Catalpa and Winchester.
You gotta be kidding me.
Go, go, go.
[INTENSE MUSIC.]
[GUNFIRE.]
Get down! Get down! [PERSON SCREAMS.]
50-21 Henry, 10-1, 10-1! Shots fired at the police.
We got one down.
Police coming up behind you! Stay back, stay back! We need ambo and cars now! - Where's the other two? - Gone! They left his ass behind.
[TIRES SQUEAL.]
You two behind me! Get behind the car! - Hailey, I'm moving! - Go! I got you! Stay down! Stay down.
Stop the car! Get out of the car now! Get out of the car.
[DRIVER SCREAMS.]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
- What do we got? - MO's completely changed.
They didn't even try to blow the doors off the truck this time.
Instead, they executed a guard who was pushing a cart of cash into the bank.
- That's why it went south.
- Yeah, it became a shootout.
Two offenders managed to take off.
Third guy couldn't get to them, so they left him.
Okay, so why the new MO? Apparently, the companies got together and decided to add a third guard to the back of the trucks.
It's a new policy that they decided to announce publicly as a deterrent.
That way if a crew blew the truck from the outside, then the third guard can engage from inside before they could get in.
Yeah, it's the only card they had left to play.
Yeah, it makes sense.
It's more violent, messier, but in theory, it gets them in and out quickly.
All right, talk to me.
Our dead offender is Paul McBride.
23, relatively short sheet.
But his cousin Cooper McBride, he's a heavy hitter.
Cooper did six years for pulling cartridges out of ATMs.
Now, he hasn't been heard from since he got out, but Cooper is six feet tall.
Which matches the body type of one of our offenders.
I mean, it's got to be him.
It's got to be Cooper McBride's crew.
Yeah, except we still got zero hard evidence.
All right, let's scrub the bodies for DNA.
Hey, Sarge, Knox was a fail.
I say we sent him downstate, we just start fresh.
Hold on, Knox was not a fail.
He didn't get made, he didn't make a mistake.
The only reason the robbery crew ghosted him is because they stopped using bombs.
I think we should double down on him.
No way.
Look, you guys have your own history, and that's what you're judging him on.
But these guys, this robbery crew? They can't keep doing this, they have to find a better way.
What they need is somebody to help them with the third guard.
So what they really need is a sniper.
Look, Jay, I get you got a problem with this guy, but unless you got another way, Knox is it.
So what's it gonna be? What the hell am I doing back here? You arrest these guys or what? New plan.
You're gonna introduce me to Davis as a sniper for hire.
You know how to find Davis? Yeah, I mean, his family's owned the bar for, like, a million years.
He's always hanging around there.
Can you get this done? Well, the alternative is life in prison? Yeah, I can do this.
Look at us, huh? Brothers in arms again.
Let's clear something up right now.
You made the wrong call in Afghanistan.
So did I.
And I haven't forgotten any of it.
And I just hope to hell that we're not making the wrong call right now.
Everything's so black and white with you.
Some of us aren't so lucky.
Just do this one right, you hear me? - It's all I'm asking of you.
- I will.
I got your back, Ricky, I do.
[APPREHENSIVE MUSIC.]
Matthew, how you doing, man? What are you doing here, Knox? I told you we ain't buying.
I'm not here for that.
And I'm not alone.
You kidding? You don't bring people here.
Calm down, I saw what happened on the TV.
I don't know what you're talking about.
- I'm trying to make a connect.
- You better shut up right now.
Me and him were in the army together.
The guy's a sniper, best I ever saw.
I don't care who he is.
All right, okay, I get it.
But I don't think yelling and grabbing your piece in a bar - is gonna get you exactly - We own this bar! How about he talks and you listen? You can't risk blowing the trucks anymore, right? And this whole plan you came up with of taking the guard out point blank? It's stupid, it's a mess, so you're out of the game.
If you hire me, I can take him out from 300, 400 yards away.
You grab the goods, it's over before they know it started, and you get to keep making money.
What, you do this for a living? You're a professional sniper? No, man, I ain't a professional nothing.
I got back from the war with ability and skills that don't translate to much.
Cut me and Knox in for a piece, everybody wins.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Come on.
Prove it.
Prove what? Prove you can take the shot.
See the truck? Find the smiley face.
What, from here? It's a quarter mile, is that a problem? Where do you want it? How about the left eye? His left? Sure.
He's not going to make it.
[LAUGHS.]
You know what we do? I've had my eye on a job.
It's a truck that services poker rooms.
Lands at a bank, that's a hell of a lot of cash.
I didn't think we'd be able to do the job, but with you You'll all be fine.
Great.
But if you miss the shot, or if anything goes wrong at all, we kill him, you understand? I put him down like a dog.
I won't miss.
Come on.
You talk to the Feds yet? Yeah, like I said, it was nothing.
Just for the bulletins.
Where is he? Roy's body.
Two bullets from my service weapon are in him.
No, they're not.
I policed your slugs, handled the rest.
It's done.
I have a right to know.
You don't need another secret to hold onto.
Sarge, we have problems.
Go ahead.
TACT team says the armored vehicle is on track, they should be here any minute, but there's no sign of the robbery crew.
They're late.
Just let it play.
Vehicle's not here yet.
That's not all.
Knox is at the crew's place.
Well, how the hell do you know that? Because I put a tracker on his car.
I texted him to say I'm in position at the bank, I called, still nothing.
So either he's playing us, or he got made.
All right, Adam, Kim, you hold anchor here.
Jay, Kev, you're with us, let's go.
[INTENSE MUSIC.]
- Knox's car is out front.
- Copy.
Jay, Kev, you hit the front.
Hailey, you got the left, I got the right, let's go.
Copy that.
I got a body.
Hailey.
Yeah, hey.
It's Cooper McBride.
He was executed, close range.
They pulled out his fingernails.
Not they.
Knox.
- What? - [GUNSHOTS.]
Sarge?! Sarge, are you hit? Are you good? I'm good! Got a live one here.
Lobbed a few at me.
Show me your hands, real slow! Come on out, drop it! It's Davis.
Thank God, I thought you were Knox.
Please, help me.
[DAVIS GROANING.]
- Clear, nobody else in there.
- Here.
Just hang tight, ambulance is on the way.
Just tell us what happened.
We were packing for the job.
Knox, he showed up over here.
Walked up and shot me, left me to die.
Made McBride tell him where the money is from the other job.
I don't know what the hell he did to him.
McBride was screaming.
Where is he, where is Knox? He took off in one of our cars.
- What car? - It's some junker van.
I don't know! There's cars in and out of here all the time.
Where's he headed? Where do you keep the money? [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Jay, Hailey, closing on your position.
Five minutes out.
I'm two minutes behind.
Crew's unit's down there.
It's open at both ends.
Why don't you drop me off around here then go around the side, and meet in the middle.
Get your hands in the air, get on your knees now! Hands in the air, Knox.
Hands in the air, now! Drop your weapon now and get on your knees! Drop your weapon and get on your knees! I've been on my knees a long time.
Put the gun down.
I had my chance, I had to take it.
You killed a guy.
World's a better place because of it.
Doesn't work like that.
Right, you know how it works.
That's not for someone like me to understand, huh, 'cause, let's just face it, I'm just meat.
Put the gun down.
Here, have this skill, but don't use it like that.
And take this rifle and kill him, but don't kill him! Put your weapon down! And come along on the robbery job, Knox, and we'll just decide later if we want to kill you like a dog afterwards.
But don't you think, boy, don't you do that.
Don't you decide what's right and what's wrong and what's fair and who deserves what, 'cause that is for somebody else.
I'm going to say this one more time, put the gun down and get on your knees, or I will kill you if I have to.
You feel that? You do exactly as she says and keep your mouth shut, or the next thing that comes out of it's gonna be a bullet.
Get on your knees, now.
[GUN CLATTERS ON GROUND.]
- Hands out! - All right, all right.
Damn it, I wanted to help you, Ricky, I I really did.
- This just felt right.
- Get up.
50-21 Henry, offender's in custody.
I'm sorry for holding things back.
I know I don't talk about my time in the army that much.
It's not that I want to keep anything from you, it's just You don't have to tell me anything.
You can, and I'll love you all the same.
[PENSIVE MUSIC.]
"Ricky" is short for "Ricochet.
" One day, outside the wire I shot a guy 400 yards away by bouncing a round off of an armored Humvee.
My guys didn't think I could make it.
The name stuck.
And I liked it.
What about Knox? He said he did something, he made a mistake? There was a guy in our unit that everybody loved.
His name was Lopez, and he couldn't resist handing out candy to all the local kids on base.
So the Taliban used a kid to kill him.
And Knox decided to take matters into his own hands, so he went out one night, off the books, and he found the man responsible.
And he killed everyone in the house.
Everyone.
Knox wasn't charged, though.
He served out his tour.
Yeah, he covered it up.
He lied.
The truth is, I could have done something.
I should have.
And I didn't.
I like that he told you it was a mistake, though, that's good.
He probably believes that too.
