Wall of Flames (Part 1)

Hey, Paula, can you hear me? Coming through loud and clear.
Can you hear me? Yes, ma'am, just beautifully, both you and the signal.
- Where are you? - Aha, try and find me.
Oh, you wanna play games? Okay, l will find you.
Hey, Judy, give me a hint.
Where is she? Oh, you're a big help.
l'll find her by myself.
She's thataway.
Hey, PauIa, where are you? Heh, you're getting colder.
ln fact, you're freezing.
Hey, Clarence.
Did you see her? Which way did she go? Oh, you're a big help.
l'll have to find her myself.
She's gotta be close by somewhere.
Well, don't worry, wise guy.
l'll find you fast enough.
Hey, Paula, where are you? lt sounds like l'm right on top of you.
Paula, where are you? Come on, talk to me.
- Ah! L got you! - You saw me! Ha, ha.
No, l had you all the way.
Clever stalking, Jack.
Dane, the mighty tracker, l give up.
Good.
And, l think l'm gonna get one of these for your father and strap it onto you and save about an hour a day.
l'll thank you to keep that idea to yourself, hero.
Well, with this little mighty wizard, anyone can be a hero.
Well, you were able to track me, but l'm not a cape buffalo.
Not hardly.
You have gained a little weight lately.
- You! - Oh! Oh, no! Fear not, little lady.
Completely shock proof.
Gotta be on the horn of a buffalo.
lt's why it took us so long.
Well, l hope it really works.
lf it does, we'll be able to track that herd every mile of its migration.
- Lt'd be the first time in history.
- Yep.
The Wameru wizards have done it again.
Shall we tell Mike it passed? l'll go up to the clinic.
- L'll check the house.
- Okay.
Hey, Mike? Over here, Paula.
- Congratulations, fellow genius, it works.
- Ha, ha, Marconi, we did it! - Next week, antigravity.
Ha-ha-ha.
- Of course.
What a pair of egos, just for building a shock proof radio transmitter a project which l inaugurated.
Hey, where is it? - Ls it here? - Lt was.
Uh-oh.
Oh, no.
- He swallowed it.
- We better get it back.
- Mike, you take the right side.
Uh-huh.
Herman.
Come here, Herman.
Herman.
Herman! Come here.
Herman! Herman! Come on, Herman! Herman! Herman! Herman! - Herman! Herman! - Herman! - Oh, Herman! Great, now we're on an ostrich chase.
And the herd can probably be moving out at any time.
Well, now, this will do nicely.
lt's fat with game and no doubt a number one rhino country.
Ugly valuable creatures that they are.
Bendix, you know, for a man that's about to become independently wealthy you don't look very happy.
Don't worry.
l won't let any of those animals get you.
Oh, come off it, Connors.
lt's simply that when we passed that animal study center l noticed that there was a district officer's vehicle there.
- Just what does that got to do with us? - You listen to me.
Those district officers, they cover a lot of territory.
Mightjust decide to come out here and check up on us.
- Ah.
A district officer, you say? - That's right.
Well, no doubt Patrick Boyle Connors can make him see things our way.
And if not, well, l'm a hunter.
And by definition, a hunter is a man who kills things.
So if a district officer comes sniffing around well, l might have to kill him, now, won't l? - Did you find anything? Completely gone.
- Nor a sight.
- Oh, great.
Cross an ostrich with a radio, it becomes invisible.
Hmm.
All our work and for what result? - An ostrich with a belly ache.
- Not Herman, he can digest anything.
He's probably enjoying it buzzing around inside of him now.
- Buzzing.
- Oh! He's broadcasting.
We may not be able to see him, but we can hear him.
Well, that's intense.
He's probably nearby.
Yeah, but it's coming from over here.
From up.
Uh, since when can an ostrich climb a tree? Of course, l wouldn't put anything past Herman.
l don't know, but it's coming from up there.
lt's Judy up there and she's got it.
She had it all the time.
Okay, thief, hand it down.
Come on down.
We're not angry.
Yeah, l'm not angry, either.
Please, Judy, bring it down, huh? Judy, it's not your toy.
Now bring that right down.
Judy, did you hear me? Bring that down.
Please, Judy? Oh, that's a good girl.
Good girl.
- Oh! Judy! Judy! - Where'd she go? - Oh, l think she's headed for the house.
Come on.
Judy! Judy! Look under the house.
She likes to hide there.
Judy! Judy? Judy? Judy? Judy.
Okay, Hawkeye, this is your last chance.
Which way did Judy go? Okay, no more questions.
Hey, Judy? She's just disappeared.
All right, we'll do it the hard way if we have to.
You mean all of the resources of modern science versus Judy? Hmm, eight to five on Judy.
Here we go.
Huh.
Uh-huh.
You two ladies are beginning to think alike.
Come on.
Now, give me that.
She was just playing with it.
l'm sure she didn't damage it.
- Ls it all right? - Seems to be.
Ah, yeah, Judy was just testing it, weren't you? - That's right.
- Ha, ha.
So you guys don't give her a bad time.
Oh, no.
As a matter of fact, Judy has done us a considerable favor.
Well, how, by giving me an ulcer? lt could've taken us a week to catch Herman.
No.
L mean she has given our little transmitter a real field test.
Hey, that's right.
She's probably shaken it, dropped it out of trees, bounced it.
Yes, sirree, and the little gem held up.
Thank you, Judy.
Hi, Dad.
Hi, Marsh.
Hi, Marsh.
And just what have you two been up to? This transmitter was supposed to be on that buffalo's horn an hour ago.
- Yeah, but Marsh - Judy had stolen it Never mind, never mind.
That herd's getting rested.
They're liable to move out and this could be our last chance to study their habits.
Right, but we're still trying to - Just get it done and do as l ask instead of fooling around.
Paula, we gotta get out to the bird station.
You two get out to that buffalo herd.
Don't complain, don't explain just get to it and don't forget to put it on the one l told you about Aah! Oh, thanks a lot.
See you later.
Hey, Bendix, come and take a look at this.
Look.
And look over there.
And look over there.
There's got to be more than a hundred of them.
Hey, look.
lt's coming in on us.
Give me that rifle, Bendix.
Eh, uh Who's this? Here, put that away.
Gentlemen, my name is Hedley.
l'm the district officer.
May l see your papers, please? Yes, uh, my name's Patrick Boyle Connors and this is me traveling companion uh, one, uh, Aloysius Bendix.
These game licenses are not valid here.
Oh, come now, inspector.
These are as legal as that handsome uniform you're wearing.
We got them in Nagoro.
My dear sir, you're in the Wameru Game Reserve.
No hunting allowed.
The free area where hunting is legal is 50 miles due north.
Oh, you're an idiot, Bendix.
You told me that you knew this territory.
Well, it's been about five years since l was here last.
Africa's an immense continent.
lt's very easy to stray 50 miles off course.
Now, here is where you are and there is where you may go after game provided you stay within limits.
Uh, thank you, sir.
l do appreciate your kind advice.
lf l may offer you another piece of advice.
This is our dry season.
The bush is like tinder.
So when you move on please put your campfire out and make sure it's out.
The last bushfire we had was a frightening spectacle.
Thousands of animals stampeding and hundreds scorched to death.
Oh, right.
Right you are, sir.
Uh, even though l am a hunter my admiration for those splendid animals of yours is no less than yours.
Starting to move out.
He's over there to the right.
Yeah, that's him, all right.
They're moving out, 11:30.
Mm-hm.
- Hi, you two.
Hey, there.
- Have you heard from Winston? - Winston? Yeah, the buffalo reminds Paula of Winston Churchill.
- Why, because he smokes cigars? Because he's stubborn.
Once they get started, we won't be able to hold him in.
Let me have a look here.
Uh, what's Winston been up to today? He left the water hole about 10:00 this morning.
Since then his grazing pattern has been erratic.
He's moved over a two mile area.
The whole herd has been following him, Marsh.
Could be they've decided to move out and look for new water.
We might have the answer as to how buffalo search for water.
You know, whether one takes the lead like Winston and takes the others along.
Hey, uh, can you see that transmitter on his horn? Uh-huh.
Took us two long months to put that thing together.
That wasn't half as hard as getting it attached to Winston, though.
You see, this way he operates like a radio beacon.
We track him as the herd finds new water and grazing territory.
lf he moves out, we just follow him by radio.
Hey, uh, doc, you wouldn't be interested in taking over this observation post for a while, would you? - Not today, Jack.
Mm-hm.
We got a little problem.
- Oh, what kind? Rhino.
Remember that herd we worked so hard to tag a few months ago? You mean the time Lulabell and Herman almost ran over you? Ahem, yeah.
Heh.
Well, l got word that a, uh, herd's moved in near the northwest water hole.
l wanna check them out, see if they're the same ones.
Want me to come along? Since you seem to know some of those rhinos by their first names.
Ha, ha.
- But, Dad, what about Winston? - You two stay here with Jack and, uh, keep your eye on Winston.
And you two keep your eye on Paula.
We can handle it.
But, Dad.
- Honey, we'll be back in a few hours.
What if the buffalo herd move out? lf the buffalo herd moves out, we'll all go together.
But l want you to wait until Mike and l get back, all right? All right.
- All right.
But hurry.
- Yeah, we won't be gone long.
Feast your eyes on those rhinos, Bendix and then tell me what a pair of horns from each one of those fine fellows would bring on the open market.
Over 500 apiece, maybe more.
Oh, you're a positive wizard at arithmetic even though you're a total loss at navigation.
Well, we can't risk shooting them now not with Hedley and his man patrolling the area.
Ah, you're a small man with a peanut for a brain.
Don't you think that we could correct that by driving this herd off the reserve? l could drop the lot of them in one day and l'd enjoy killing all of those ugly beasts if only because l don't care for some stuffed shirt with a fancy hat telling me what l can and what l can't hunt.
l'm Patrick Boyle Connors and no man on God's green Earth lays his little rules on me.
But, Connors, how can we drive this herd 50 miles off the reserve? Bendix, give me that rifle and load up, will you? Connors! What are you doing? What? What are? Listen here, Bendix, will you? lt was Hadley that sparked the idea for me.
The wind's blowing to the north so those stupid beasts will run northerly.
They'll run off this reserve and into our pockets.
- Lt'll be like shooting fish in a barrel.
- You're crazy.
Cool it will you, Bendix.
What's the matter with you? What if you kill half the animals in the reserve? And what about us? We'll be trapped here, burned to a crisp.
Don't talk like an old lady.
Those that can, like ourselves, that can run out well, okay.
Those that can't, that's Mother Nature's law of survival.
Survival of the fittest.
You forget about those animals and remember we're gonna reap the harvest of a rich man's bonfire.
And you get yourself inside that truck and get it started now, you hear me? Every animal in the area is running.
Yes, it did get a bit out of hand.
This will attract every policeman for 50 miles around.
Fine, the klutz will be kept busy firefighting while we move north after the rhino.
But Hedley and his man saw us in this area.
- Lf they catch us now - They won't.
They'll be too occupied.
Come on.
Marsh.
There's another fire about two miles back.
- The main front's heading north.
- L know, l've given out the alarm.
The unit should be here any minute now.
Jumo! Watch the flames right to the side of you.
But if the fire's that way, what are you after here? Evidence.
- You see this petrol can? - Yeah? l recognized it.
This little token was left at the point the fire was started.
- "Was started.
" You mean it's arson? - Yes.
And l've a pretty good idea of the identity of the two culprits.
- Who? - Two hunters, Connors and Bendix.
How could a fire help them? There was a goodly sized herd of rhino in the area and l'd warned these men that hunting was prohibited on the reserve.
So l suppose they started the fire to drive the herd north out of the reserve.
Yeah, where they can be butchered without any interference.
- These must be their tire tracks.
- Oh, yeah.
Fire crew.
You men, there get around Jumo and stamp those flames out! Officer Hedley? Hmm.
l'm Hammem Kodo, Wameru Volunteer Fire Battalion.
- There'll be others along shortly.
- The main fire front's a bit north.
l'll show you as soon as we've put out this fire in the gully.
Hedley, Mike and l are gonna head north toward Cliff.
That fire won't reach that area for hours.
- But this Connors and, uh - Bendix.
Bendix, they might.
Try to pick up the trail, see if we can save some animals on the way.
l would go with you, but l better stay and coordinate the firefighting units.
Oh, Mike, see if you can get Paula on the radio, will you? Mm-hm.
Blue Zebra, come in.
BIue Zebra, come in.
Blue Zebra here.
Come in, come in.
You better take these with you with some real bullets in case you come across those firebugs.
No thanks, l'll stick to my tranquilizer rifle.
BIue Zebra here.
Come in, come in.
Paula? Paula, there's been a change of plans.
l want you and Jack to go back to the compound right away.
But, Dad, the buffalo herd's moving out.
And so are you, back to the compound.
Be a good girl and do as l say.
We'll see you later.
Ugh! He just won't listen.
Good thing she doesn't know about this fire.
She'll try to save some animals and get herself into trouble.
Come on, move over, will you? We better get out of here.
Now, l hope you two will keep out of trouble too.
lf you spot Connors and Bendix keep them under surveillance - and radio me.
- Don't worry.
We can't abandon an experiment at this time.
Well, look, when the commander in chief says retreat, we retreat.
Oh, boy, are you a dedicated scientist? Well, look, be reasonable, Paula.
Be reasonable? Was Marie Curie reasonable? Or Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton or Sister Kenny? Here we go.
Well, they got things accomplished and so will l.
That's Winston broadcasting and l'm gonna follow him.
All by yourself, huh? l'll take Judy with me.
- Oh, come on.
Sit down.
- Ahh! Just what do you think you're doing? l really don't know.
Apparently volunteering for a wild buffalo hunt.
Congratulations.
What a nice surprise.
l don't suppose you packed the supplies? l did.
L brought food and water and a hypodermic rifle and some tools.
Now, are you ready? l'm not exactly a tenderfoot, you know.
Well, certainly not.
The only tender part of you is your head.
See? There he is.
Yup, and here we are, even though we shouldn't be.
Try the receiver.
How about that? Away we go.
- Jack, do you see him? - Yep.
He's coming in fine.
Judy! You shouldn't turn the volume so high.
He's moving north, towards the foothill.
And moving fast.
Faster than he really should.
Giraffes? Most of the giraffes are 30 miles south of here.
Oh, big deal, giraffes.
Don't be melodramatic.
Jack, they're moving fast.
Something's frightened them.
Axiom.
There is a logical explanation for every natural occurrence.
- There you go again, quoting Dad.
- Lt's true, isn't it? l'd like to know what logical explanation is driving these game north.
Well, could be a pride of lions.
Jack, a pride of lions would only scatter the game and they're all moving in the same direction.
That's true.
Well, maybe they're looking for water because of this drought.
Elephants? Oh, those elephants aren't looking for water.
They're frightened.
And elephants don't have natural enemies.
Yeah, you're right.
Oh, and Judy senses something too.
Hey, there's something funny about the air.
Smoke? Oh, no.
Oh, brother.
No wonder every animal in this jungle is running for its life.
Oh, Jack, can we make it back to the compound? l don't think so, not with this wind.
We better go north like the animals, trust their instinct for survival.
Well, do you think we can make it? l don't know.
l don't know.
That fire's almost catching up with us.
Ah, Bendix, you're a chicken hawk coward.
We can outrun that fire, but you'll never outrun your condition.
Don't talk to me like that.
Ha, ha, and who'll stop me? - They're heading northwest now.
- They're after the rhino herd, all right.
Butchers.
We're getting closer though.
l'm glad we didn't start trailing the buffalo today.
With that fire we might've run into real trouble.
With Paula along too.
- Come on, let's get going.
- Okay.
We've got enough of a lead to circle around, go back to the compound.
No, we have to help the animals that are trapped here.
Oh, Jack, isn't there something we can do for them? Maybe if we started up a back fire we could open up an escape corridor for some of them.
But, uh, that's gonna take time.
lt's gonna cut down our own chances well, maybe too much.
l don't care.
We're gonna have to try.
Come on.
Gasoline and rags.
Okay, pour.
Close the can up tight.
Hold them.
Okay, let's go! Well, it's a chance.
Let's get going.
But, Jack, do you think the animals will be able to find a safe area? - L can't guarantee it.
- Unless we lead them to safety.
That's too dangerous.
Come on.
Oh, Jack, l know it's risky, but it's sure death for the animals.
You're right.
Let's go.
Looks like the whole reserve is on fire.
Heh, well, when Patrick Boyle Connors does something, he does it proper.
Uh, that officer and his rules, let him breathe smoke for a while.
- Lf they ever find out that we've done it - They won't, little man.
We'll be outside this reserve in two hours and so will our rhinos.
Now, hang on tight and l'll see you safe.
- Connors, watch it, will you? - Oh, hold tight, little man.
Ha, ha.
There's Winston.
You know, that's pretty clever.
He figured out how to escape by using those cliffs as a windbreak between him and the fire.
And why shouldn't he? You used your reasoning power to head this way, didn't you? - Sure, but - He happened to get here first which makes him a little bit smarter than you.
Oh, well, that's ridiculous.
Look, Winston and l will take our lQ's at some other time.
Right now, we've gotta turn off.
- Well, what is it? - We're out of gas.
Well, don't stand there.
Get the extra can from the back.
You used our reserve gasoline to start the fire, remember? All right, what are we gonna do now, big man, huh? How are we gonna get out of here, huh? Look at that.
Look.
Look at that.
Well, the fire is closing in.
We're gonna be killed.
You're gonna be, if you don't shut up when l'm trying to think.
- L'm not gonna take any more orders.
- Ah, l'm not gonna be burned alive.
You get that ammunition and water.
We're going out on foot.
- You and your stupid - Oh, shut up, will you? Devil takes care of his own.
We're going to ride after all.
Well, we're passed the Dongo Cliffs.
We can turn west and head for home.
Jack, look.
That baby gazelle.
Poor thing's probably separated from its mother.
- Lt'll just die out here.
- No more rescue operations.
Oh, please.
Look, the fire's getting close.
lt'd be plain foolhardy.
This is the last one.
They're turning off, not coming this way.
Let's call them.
We gotta get out of here by car.
Hold this.
l'll stop them before they leave.
They're stopping.
- What do you think they done that for? - Oh, who knows? Who cares? Come on, let's get moving.
Ah, l can't use these.
They're full doses.
They could kill a baby.
Can't very well go up and reason with it.
He won't move.
When they're this young, their instinct is to remain motionless concealment.
Now, wait here.
Hey, better hurry up.
The fire's getting closer.
Ah, that's right, lad.
The next time you might well be dead.
Who are you? Patrick Boyle Connors is me name, me lovely creature.
Yes, and l don't care much for you, either.
What do you want from us? l need your truck.
But that's the only way we have to escape the fire.
l'm not an unreasonable man, especially when it comes to a smarted colleague.
Uh, you'll be coming with us.
After we leave the reserve, we'll do a bit of hunting.
And then we have to cross the border and you two might come in very handy.
After that, uh, we'll let you go.
On the other hand, if you cause me any trouble uh, you might meet with an accident.
Uh, a fatal one?
