Death In Paradise (2011) s14e02 Episode Script

Season 14, Episode 2

PANTS
PANTS
Agh!
GROANS
Excellent!
Jonny's made some new friends.
Cockroaches, always a winner.
OK, Dale?
They're, um They're
nearing the zip line.
Received. Lifting off now. Over.
Good, and don't mess this up, fly boy.
Muppet.
Right, bets on, guys.
Who's going to get the key
to our treasure chest?
Agh!
Ouch. Yeah, that doesn't look good.
JONNY: Chaz?
- Are you OK? Can I help?
- I'm fine.
It's not over yet. GASPS
JONNY CHUCKLES
Hey, it is now.
Unlucky, Chaz.
Lise, can you pick up
super-mum? She's done.
She's She's cooked.
I really thought she'd
have this in the bag.
But make sure you make it back for the,
um, winner's ceremony.
I really want to see Chaz crying
while Jonny cracks open that champagne.
Already on it, Rick. You want
taking over to the finish line?
Over. Er, no, no.
No, I'll make my own way there.
Copy that.
Good. OK, I'm heading out.
Any surprises, let me know.
Let's go, baby!
DALE: Stand by. He's about
to make his descent, guys.
Island Warrior!
DALE: I'm following him on the drone.
JONNY WHOOPS
LAUGHS
WHOOPS
DALE: Lost sight of
Jonny behind the trees.
Should pick him up in a moment.
OK, got eyeball on him.
Wait, something's wrong.
Guys?
Er, Rick, we've got a situation.
RICK: What's going on?
CREW: Get the medic down there now!
That don't look good.
Let's go, let's go.
Right, everybody
DALE: Where's the medic?
CREW: I can see him.
DALE: Guys, we need help down here.
Can someone get the medic
down there now, please?
CREW: I I think he's dead.
DARLENE SIGHS
Like it was never even broken.
He should be back in London by now.
I do hope the next inspector
won't be quite as impatient.
Or impolite.
Hmm! Or just, you know rude.
Let's hope so.
It's just a three-month gig.
I don't see anything in the small print
that says I have to stay beyond that.
It's a standard temporary contract.
Once completed, you are free to go.
Or stay, if you change your
Nice try, Commissioner.
I just need a bit more time
to do some digging into
my mother's accident.
Which we need to talk about.
Once that's done and dusted, I am
Ah! Outta here. Mm?
Exactly.
Something you've said to
me now a handful of times.
Three more months,
then it's bye-bye, DI Wilson.
Clear?
Crystal.
I mean it.
And I believe you. PHONE RINGS
Excuse me.
Officer Curtis, how can I help?
I see.
Well that is good timing.
You have your first official case.
So, the victim was a contestant.
Jonny Feldon, aged 32.
They're filming a game
show called Island Warrior.
Cause of death is a single
knife wound to the abdomen,
2 cm wide.
Paramedics reckon it's pretty deep.
Get this.
He was only going down a
zip line when it happened.
Mr Feldon disappeared from view
behind those trees down there.
When he reappeared
near the bottom,
he was dead.
Excuse me. Hi.
- DS Thomas?
- Yes.
I'm Lisa, the runner.
I've got a DI Mervin Wilson.
Says he wants to speak with you.
That's a joke, right?
You're joking.
Inspector?
At last. What took you so long?
What are you? Why are you?
I thought you flew back to London, sir.
No, I'm still here, for my sins.
The good news is,
I'm going to be your new DI.
Just signed a three-month contract.
MOUTHS
That's not what I call good news.
I heard that, Officer Curtis.
Sorry, I still had my
finger pressed on it.
Da-da-da-da!
I just meant that, um
It's not good news for you, Inspector.
You do seem to hate it here.
No, I don't hate it here,
just don't love it.
Well, thank you for the
clarification, sir.
Look, I'm at the production base,
but I'm going to be heading down
to where it looks like
the victim was stabbed,
so I need you and Officer Curtis
to meet me there with a
crime scene kit, yeah?
Received, sir. Over.
Thanks.
OK.
Show me.
I had eyes on Jonny
all the way down the wire until here,
where he disappears behind the trees.
He was out of sight for
about 40 seconds or so.
And then we switched to the XZ360
for the arrival shot.
Um in English.
It's a small remote fixed camera
at the landing platform.
So, right in the middle
of you filming your TV game show,
someone murders one of your contestants?
Mm.
I mean, it's audacious,
to say the least. Yeah.
Can you think of a reason why someone
would want to kill Mr Feldon,
and in such a visible manner?
PHONE RlNGS Oh, sorry. This
Um, sorry, this is the network.
They're currently holding
crisis talks, so actually I
Mr Mayhew, the only talks you
need to be having right now
are with me.
RlNGlNG CONTINUES Right.
OK.
Um, no, I can't think why
anybody would want to do this.
He was a terrific contestant,
salt of the earth.
He was going to donate the prize money
to a cancer charity.
His mum has cancer, so
CHAZ: Yeah, it's true.
He was the sweetest guy.
Yeah.
Oh, sorry, that's Chaz.
She's the, um
She was the other finalist.
I honestly don't know why anyone
would wanna do this to him.
PHONE RINGS Sorry.
They're just going to
keep ringing and ringing,
so I do really need to
take this. Are we?
Are we done here?
For now. OK.
Inspector.
Welcome back. Again.
OK, so let me get this straight.
Our killer climbed all the way up there,
waited for Jonny to come
past on the zip wire,
and stabbed him.
Well, the bush here has been flattened,
and those look like scuff marks.
Also, we found this knife,
which is a match for the wound.
I assumed it must have fallen
out of the killer's pocket
as they were climbing
back down the tree.
I'll dust for prints
back at the station.
- What's that?
- What's what?
Glove.
Please.
Progress, Inspector.
Well done.
There's something else down here,
near to where you found the knife.
It's a pearl.
Can't tell if it's real or not.
Looks like it snapped off something.
Actually, I think it's an earring.
All right, Officer Curtis,
I want statements from everyone
involved in the filming -
crew and contestants.
We know the victim was stabbed at 8.40,
so find out where
everyone was at that time.
And wherever the victim was staying,
that needs searching as well.
Oh, and find out who's
missing a pearl earring.
And I'll go and do all of
that on my own some, shall I?
Ah.
We need to speak to the Commissioner,
see if he's found a new recruit yet,
especially now we have a
murder to investigate.
Police Officer Sebastian Rose
completed the Pan-Caribbean
training scheme
shortly before Officer Brice,
but he has yet to find a placement.
That's him there.
Sorry, which guy?
Er, the one handing out the leaflets.
The one dressed as a pineapple?
You're joking, right?
He's the new officer?
Rest assured, he won't
be dressed as a pineapple
when he's on duty.
I interviewed him at the
same time as Officer Brice.
He wasn't my first choice,
but I think there's potential there.
It just needs teasing out a bit.
We got all the fruits.
We have mango, watermelon,
so treat yourself to
a Sunnytown smoothie.
Look, we got all the flavours,
from groovy guava to poppin' pineapple.
Yes.
Ah, Commissioner Patterson!
This is Detective
Inspector Mervin Wilson.
Sebastian Rose.
It's an honour to meet you,
Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson.
Just "Inspector" is fine.
I've never met, like, an
actual living detective before.
I mean, it's cool.
You must be, like, you know,
proper, "Whoa, I'm a detective."
No. Commissioner,
are you sure this is a good idea?
Officer Rose, you may not be aware,
but the young man
we'd previously offered
the position to
Benjamin, you mean.
I heard.
I mean, it's awful.
Poor guy.
I never met him,
but I heard really good things.
It means we are looking
to fill the position again
and I On a provisional basis.
Right? Sorry,
you're offering me the job?
I am. There is an
initial probation period
of three months, starting tomorrow.
And it is provisional.
All right.
You can count me in, man.
I mean Commissioner. Sorry.
This is amazing.
Thank you,
Detective Inspector Wilson.
Really, just "Inspector" is fine.
Whatever you say.
I mean, you're the boss, right?
Literally!
And I promise you, I won't let you down.
Yeah!
Yes, I! Yes!
SEB LAUGHS
You seem troubled, Inspector.
Troubled?
Me?
No.
Everything's brilliant.
So, our victim, Jonny Feldon,
is from Liverpool.
Started running marathons in his '20s
and donating the money
to cancer charities.
And you think one of
these four killed him?
Well, they're the only
ones that can't be alibied
at the time Jonny disappeared from view
on the zip line and was stabbed.
The producer, the rival contestant,
camera operator and the runner.
All the other crew members
have been accounted for.
But these four were elsewhere,
out of sight of anyone else?
We know Jonny started his
descent on the zip line
at 8.39
WHOOPS
was stabbed halfway down at 8.40,
and then reached the
landing platform at 8.41.
Took him a total of two
minutes from top to bottom
but the thing is,
while our four suspects can be alibied
at the time of the murder,
they all got back to the
landing platform by 8.43.
This camera was left filming,
and two minutes after
Jonny's body reached it,
there's Dale arriving,
closely followed by Chaz
Lisa and then Rick.
But if one of these four
climbed a tree to stab Jonny
coming down the zip line -
here -
it's going to take way more
than two minutes for them
to climb back dawn again,
make their way through dense jungle,
to end up at the landing platform here.
DARLENE: When we walked it,
it took us half an hour.
Even if we'd run,
it would still take us
at least 20 minutes.
So how can it be
that one of these four did it?
Of all the elaborate
ways to murder someone
And all during the filming of a TV show.
Why do it like that?
Why make it so difficult?
And why do it so publicly?
PHONE RINGS
SIGHS
Chief Commissioner, this is a surprise.
Commissioner Patterson,
any chance we can meet tomorrow?
Yes, I can make myself
available tomorrow.
I'll get a flight over first thing.
Great, thanks.
Um, are you able to give me
some indication of what it's about?
Let's discuss it when you get here.
O-Of course.
We'll talk tomorrow.
Night, Inspector.
Night, sir. Yeah. Uh-huh.
Commissioner. You got a minute?
My mum's accident. I'm keen
to start doing some digging.
And as I made clear,
I want us to meet and
discuss it properly.
Is now good? Or tomorrow, first thing?
No, now is not good.
Tomorrow I have a
meeting over in Jamaica,
and you have a murder
case to investigate,
if you've forgotten. Yeah, yeah,
I know, but I can
always find the time
My secretary will contact
you in due course,
and we will set something up.
Good evening, Inspector.
Miss Clemetson?
It's Dl Wilson from Saint Marie Police.
I know you were a good
friend of my mother.
Can I come and have a chat?
Evening, Miss Clemetson.
Thank you for agreeing to speak with me.
But I don't understand.
I thought Dorna's death was an accident.
Are you now saying it's murder?
If I can come in, I can explain.
KNOCK ON DOOR
Morning sir?
IRON HISSES
Er, laundry day?
I got a mate of mine
to send some more stuff from London,
seeing as I'm going to be
staying here a bit longer.
But most of it's got
creased in transit
and the humidity doesn't help.
You're
really good at this, sir.
You don't
fancy doing some of mine, do you?
No.
Is that the postmortem?
Confirms Jonny Feldon died
from a single stab wound
that pierced his kidney.
And the blood on the knife
matches the victim's,
but no fingerprints.
You know, finding that
knife at the crime scene
is feeling increasingly fishy to me.
The killer seems to have
accidentally dropped it
but conveniently left no prints on it.
You think they wanted us to find it?
Maybe. It just doesn't seem right.
And that broken pearl earring -
what was that doing in
the exact same place?
CAR DOOR CLOSES
He looks happy.
I thought he was seeing
the Chief in Jamaica.
Is there a problem, Commissioner?
Brianna Clemetson has just called me,
asking if it is true
we are investigating the murder
of her friend and neighbour.
I didn't use the word murder. Inspector,
that you are unofficially investigating
your mother's accident
is in itself hugely problematic.
Yeah, but I'm not invest And
the fact that you have already chosen
to go behind my back
doesn't help matters.
From now on, you will do
nothing without my say-so.
And I want DS Thomas
across this as well.
Right. Uh, what is this exac
Doesn't matter, we can do me later,
you carry on.
I have a plane I need to catch.
I have so many questions.
The pineapple has landed.
Sorry?
The new recruit? Yes, sir.
Officer Seb Rose.
But you two have already met, I believe.
Good morning, Inspector!
Just "Inspector", right?
I made a mental note to myself.
Good for you.
And this is Detective
Sergeant Naomi Thomas.
Welcome to the team.
It's cool to be here,
like a dream-come-true kind of cool.
So I gave Seb the case file to read,
so he's fully up to speed.
Yes, I am, totally up to speed.
Although, I mean,
I've not finished reading
through it yet, but I will.
I'm just quite a slow reader.
Don't you worry about it.
It's your first day.
A lot to take in.
But from what I've read,
I mean, this guy,
being stabbed on a zip wire
Always wanted to go on a zip wire.
CLEARS HIS THROA
OK, so let's go over
what we know already.
Officer Curtis?
So, I made a start in
collecting information
on our suspects,
and I have also requested
financial checks.
Stupid heat!
Um
Whatever you were saying, carry on.
Just that Seb and I are about to go over
to the hotel where the crew are staying,
search the victim's bedroom.
The first search! Exciting!
DS Thomas has brought me
up-to-date with the postmortem.
Nothing surprising there.
And toxicology shows that the victim
had a significant amount of
painkillers in his system.
I checked with the crew medic,
and he was taking them
for his knee injury
he sustained earlier in the competition.
The person who interests
me is Chaz Simons.
Tell me about her.
She's a PE teacher from Reading,
recently divorced,
has an eight-year-old daughter,
and she was frontrunner on the show.
You know what bothers me
most about this murder case?
For the killer's plan to work,
Jonny Feldon would have to
get to that zip line first,
which does make me wonder
if Miss Simons was in on it.
Or someone made sure she'd lose.
Actually, Inspector,
there's something else a bit
fishy about Miss Simons.
I recovered CCTV
from outside the production office.
Ah. Um
Chaz has hurt her right ankle,
but look when she gets
out of the vehicle.
She forgets herself and
puts pressure on it.
Doesn't even flinch.
NAOMI: She's faking the injury.
So Chaz did throw the final.
Hey, Chaz. Hey.
How are you feeling?
We saw the footage of the fall.
It's nasty.
I did my own ankle in once.
Painful, right?
Yeah. It wasn't pleasant,
but they've got me properly dosed up,
so I'm doing all right.
So you're sticking to the lie, then?
Sorry?
How about we get an independent doctor
to check out that ankle?
I mean, if that's what you want.
Really? Cos we can get a guy
out here in, what, 20 minutes?
I'd say less than that, sir.
He's already on standby, so
You want us to make the call?
I really don't think
there's any need to.
No, it's no trouble.
LlNE RlNGS
All right, fine.
Rick told me to throw the final,
all right? Rick.
But I swear I didn't know
Jonny was going to get killed.
OK.
Now we're getting somewhere.
Why did Rick ask you to do that?
He said he had no choice,
that the bosses wanted
Jonny to be the winner.
He had a better
What do you call it? Backstory.
So Rick offered me 25 grand,
same as the prize money,
and told me to take a tumble.
So, money is all you wanted?
I mean, if that's the case,
you could have just
ignored Rick and won.
Rick told me if I didn't do it,
he'd destroy me in the edit,
make me look petty and jealous.
This isn't my world, Inspector.
He was the producer. How could I say no?
And my little girl, she was so excited
about seeing her mum on the telly.
So that's what all this is about?
Rick wanted Jonny to win
because it liked better on screen?
Miss Simons
is there something else?
I overheard Jonny talking
to his lawyer on the phone.
He was angry.
Something about his knee injury.
It's his shoot, he's responsible!
He can't just fob me
off with painkillers!
I'll look into it.
PHONE RINGS
You getting on all
right with the logging?
Doing it just like they
taught us in training,
trying not to mess up.
Well, we can't ask much
more than that, now, can we?
So how did you find training?
It was amazing, like,
the best thing ever.
I mean, I was better at
some things than others,
but we've all got our strengths
and weaknesses, right?
I've always been a more
practical, physical
kind of guy, you know?
Less keen on the
paperwork side of things.
Well, you know there's
quite a lot of paperwork
when you're a police officer?
Oh, yeah, of course,
and I've got very good at
muddling my way through
that sort of thing, so don't you worry.
I guess what I'm trying to say is,
when chasing the bad guys,
I am totally your man, Darlene.
Officer Curtis.
Well, that's good to know.
Now, what's this?
What's what?
There's something in Jonny's socks.
Oh, this is just like the movies.
Well, not the sucks so much,
the secret clue part.
Oh. A memory stick.
And if the victim didn't
want anybody finding it,
then maybe
There must be something of
relevance to the murder case
on it.
Bag it, log it,
and we'll take a look at it
when we get back to the station.
Amazing!
No, of course I don't
want to talk to him.
And, anyway, how did he know?
Well, could you find
that out for me, please?
Thank you.
Simpleton!
So, some joker has just leaked
the details of the murder
to the press, so now the
vultures are circling.
It's an absolute disaster.
This whole thing is a
Well, it It's a mess.
And it's about to get messier.
Why didn't you tell us
that you'd paid Chaz
Simons to throw the final?
OK, look, I had to do what
was best for the show.
Look, Chaz is a sweetheart,
but Jonny has the better story.
I'm sorry to say it,
but a sick mum, just
It plays better.
So, yeah, I made sure he won,
and I'm pretty sure that
isn't a crime, is it?
Bribery in the workplace?
Absolutely it's a crime.
You didn't know that? What?
Thing is, I don't buy
this Jonny backstory.
You see, DS Thomas spoke
to Mr Feldon's lawyer.
Turns out he was threatening
to take you to court
for negligence?
That leg injury he had,
that was down to an accident on set,
one that could have been avoided.
According to the lawyer,
"To cut costs, the full
health and safety checks"
"weren't carried out."
On your watch.
So Jonny could have ruined
you if that came out.
OK. What, and you think his death
has solved all that for me, do you?
Are you joking me? Take a look around!
All my investors have just pulled out.
The tabloids are now sniffing around,
and the show that I've spent years
developing and working on
will now never be aired on TV.
So things aren't looking
particularly rosy for me,
are they? Tell me, Mr Mayhew,
what's the insurance
situation for you right now?
Insuran? Well, I
Well, I don't know,
I'd have to look into it.
What, you haven't already? No!
And I'm curious to know,
now Jonny's been murdered,
if you stand to get a hefty pay-out
which you wouldn't be getting
if he was still around to sue you.
DARLENE: All right.
Thank you so much for your help.
So, I have just spoken
to the insurance company.
The policy the production
would have taken out
would have covered murder.
So Rick Mayhew
definitely had motive.
But they also said
it is not the first
accident reported on set.
They reckon it's a cursed production.
But if it was Rick, then how?
How did he manage to
stab Jonny Feldon here,
where we found the knife and the pearl,
and then make it all
the way back to here,
arriving on camera two minutes later?
It doesn't make sense. It can't be done.
Maybe this whole negligence thing
has something to do
with the memory stick
you found earlier. Officer Rose,
the memory stick from Jonny's bungalow?
Let's have it.
Sure thing. Coming right at ya.
I mean, it's in here somewhere.
Definitely has to be in
here somewhere, I mean
Seb, what have you done with it?
I bagged it.
I am sure I bagged it.
And I logged it as well.
Look, right there.
And after that, what did you do?
I don't believe this.
Look, um, why don't Seb and I
go back to the hotel
and see if it's there?
It has to be somewhere, right?
Look, I'm really sorry about this,
but I Seb!
Inspector, I know I bagged it,
and I know I
Come on!
So
if we're finishing for the evening,
I was just wondering if you'd want to
Well, I know you don't,
but I think you should,
or we should Spit it out, DS Thomas.
Do you want to talk about your mother?
I'm really sorry, sir.
Losing your mother
before you even got
to know her, that's
There's no need for you to feel sorry.
Just how it is.
Ah, Commissioner. How was your flight?
It's been a long day.
Can I get you a drink?
No. Thank you.
I've brought DS Thomas up
to speed with my mother
I mean, the Dorna Bray case.
And what are your thoughts on it?
I guess I'm just curious to know
why the Inspector thinks her
death might be suspicious.
As am I, Inspector.
SIGHS
Look, the day Dorna drowned,
according to the file,
she'd headed out to sea to
scatter her father's ashes.
But I've done some digging,
and I found out that Dorna's father,
before he retired, he was a fisherman.
Had been all his life, from what I know.
Right. So, if Dorna grew up
around boats and fishing,
what was she doing heading out
to sea with a storm coming?
She would know to check
the weather, right?
Well, doesn't that strike you as odd?
With respect, sir,
that feels tenuous.
To say the least.
It was probably an
emotional day for her,
scattering her father's ashes.
Maybe she didn't think
to check the weather.
But even if there was more to it,
what do you think happened? Miss Bray
was alone on that boat, at sea,
in the middle of a storm.
How could anyone have
killed her like that?
I don't know.
I don't. But if there is the
the smallest chance
that someone did, well,
I can't not look into it, can I?
Er, what's happened here?
I don't know, Inspector.
I just arrived and this is what I found.
So it's pineapple boy.
Seb.
CLEARS HIS THROA
You want to tell us
what's been going on?
Oh, um, right.
Yeah, so, firstly,
good morning, everyone,
and welcome to day two of
the Seb Rose experience.
CHUCKLES
Just a joke.
So, um
I was feeling really bad yesterday,
about the whole missing evidence thing,
and I wanted to try
and put things right.
OK.
And I remembered something
that saying, you know?
"If you can't find something,"
"try and remember where
you last had it."
And I did.
And I know I definitely
put it in the sidecar
with the other pieces of evidence.
Which means, if I put it there,
someone must have taken it.
Which also means,
for someone to do that,
you must have left it unattended. Right?
Let's not focus too much on
that right now, Inspector.
But, um, you dusted the
sidecar for prints?
Yes. I did.
I mean, it took ages.
All night, to be honest.
Did you get a match?
Yes, I did.
Somewhere.
So who took it, Officer Rose?
Who took the memory stick?
What's going on? What are you doing?
Mr Buckingham. Just the man.
You can't come in here and
just go through my stuff.
You got a warrant?
It's not your room, it's the hotel's
and they gave us permission, so
We found the memory stick
that you stole from
our officer's vehicle.
And we know what's on it.
This is footage from your drone,
filming Jonny and Lisa.
We won't watch the rest.
We've seen all of it, and so have you.
Right, I, um
What?
Never done that before.
Oh? Filmed people
without their knowledge?
It's not a habit?
Cos if there's more No, there isn't,
all right? I swear.
It was the first time.
So why did you do it?
I don't know why I find it so hard to
You know, getting
Getting with someone.
Film shoots, you know,
people are hooking up
all the time but
it's just not
It just doesn't happen for me.
So, hang on.
You didn't manage to pull,
so you did this instead?
It wasn't like that. Lisa, I liked her,
and we'd been getting close, you know,
helping each other out on set.
And, I thought it was going somewhere.
Next thing I know,
she and Jonny were getting close.
You felt jealous.
Yeah.
And you really liked her.
So it was revenge, doing this?
I just wanted more of her.
You understand that,
right? No, I don't, at all.
And let's be clear.
You will be arrested
and charged for this.
You understand that, right?
So Jonny Feldon found
out what you'd done
and confronted you about it,
and took the memory stick.
I don't know how he found out,
but he did, yeah.
The morning of the final,
he came and, um
Yeah, he wasn't best pleased.
You filmed us? You are sick,
you know that, right?
You do surprise me.
And did he threaten to go to the police,
get you arrested, get you sacked?
He said he was going to speak to Rick
as soon as we wrapped.
Which would mean your career
as a camera operator was over.
And that gives you motive to stab Mr
No No, no, no, no. I didn't kill him.
All right? Look, I was ready
to be handed my marching orders,
have the handcuffs slapped
on me for what I'd done,
but then the next thing
I know Jonny's hanging
from that zip wire dead.
So how come Lisa Bulmer
never told us she and
Jonny were an item?
That's a very good question, DS Thomas.
And there was a lot
of talk in that video,
when they weren't you know.
And towards the end,
that didn't look like pillow talk to me.
More like a row.
Any chance we can get a lip-reader
to look at the footage
and get a transcript?
When they're talking,
obviously, not when they're
I definitely don't want to read that.
Seb, honey? Yeah?
I'm over here.
I know.
Seb! What?
Look at me when I'm talking to you!
Sorry, Officer Curtis.
I'm all ears and eyes.
Go.
I'm just curious to know how it was
you left the evidence unattended.
Oh, right.
Yeah, so like I told you,
I put it all in the sidecar.
You were on your phone, weren't you?
And when you weren't looking,
the memory stick went and got stolen.
I think maybe
That must have been what happened.
It's just, you see, I have
this group chat thing going on.
Firming up a beach party on the weekend.
It's going to be mad and
That's not making it
sound any better, is it?
All right, look
I've got a
a fidgety brain, you know?
Not so good at focusing on
what's right in front of me.
Always moving on to the next thing
and the next thing and
I guess that's why I'm not so good
at the paperwork side of things.
Well, you know what?
At least we know what
we're working with,
so now we can keep an eye on it.
Both of us together.
Hmm. And let me tell you something else.
It was smart what you did
when you went and dusted the
sidecar for fingerprints.
I was impressed.
You were? Very!
Hey-hey!
Well, if you was impressed by that,
just wait till you need
some criminals chasing.
I am so your guy.
Seriously. I can run
faster than anybody I know.
For real!
Ah, Inspector.
The transcript has come in
from Dale's drone footage.
Give me the headlines.
Lisa Bulmer is not just a runner.
She got a job working for the TV show
because she has a score
she wants to settle.
Hmm! And you'll never
guess what she was up to.
MERVlN: Do you have history
with your boss, Rick Mayhew?
No, I'd never met him before the shoot.
Well, I know he thinks that,
but we know otherwise, don't we?
I really don't know what you mean.
We know you told Jonny Feldon
about your past, about how you believe
Rick Mayhew stole your
idea for Island Warrior
without crediting you or
paying you any money for it.
We also know you only came here
to try and sabotage the show.
MERVlN: You're not denying that?
You don't look particularly surprised
by that allegation.
You just look guilty.
I was at a networking event,
two years ago.
I got chatting to Rick
and I pitched my idea to him.
Everything he's been
filming this last month
is exactly what I pitched.
Same format, same location.
And what was his response
when you pitched your idea?
He just shrugged,
shook his head and told me
it's not what the
channels are looking for.
Next thing I hear it's been green-lit
and they're in pre-production on it.
Did you not confront Mr Mayhew about it?
There was no proof I had the idea first,
or I tried to sell it to him.
Didn't write it down.
So you applied for a job as a runner,
taking a chance Rick
wouldn't remember you
after two years,
and came here for revenge?
There's been a lot of
accidents on this shoot,
including Jonny Feldon's knee injury.
That's your doing.
No, you can't prove that.
Actually, yes, we can.
Sorry to disappoint,
but we've got a recording
of a conversation
you had with Jonny two days
before he was murdered.
A recording? I 'll
I'll talk to you about that in a moment.
In that recording,
you opened up to him
about why you were here
and the damage you'd done.
You caused the accidents
to get back at Rick.
Rick stole my show.
Lisa, what do you mean?
He deserves everything
he's going to get.
But Jonny didn't react the
way you expected, did he?
He was so angry
that I could have spoiled
his chances of winning.
You were behind all of it? My leg,
it was because of you.
Jonny, just You need help,
Lisa. Just go.
Getting that money for his mum
And how did that make you feel?
Sharing your secret with Jonny
only to have him throw
it back in your face?
And now you'd opened up to him,
you must have been worried
about what he was going to do
with that information.
Are you saying that I
killed him cos of this?
Plus the fact that his death
has achieved everything you wanted.
It's destroyed Rick's TV show.
Your revenge is now complete.
No No, no, no.
Look, I know how this looks.
I know how I look. But I'm not a a
I wouldn't do this.
OK? I swear to you,
I didn't murder Jonny.
MERVlN: Even if she did do it,
we come back to the same problem.
It's just not possible for her,
or any of the suspects,
to have stabbed Jonny
in the middle of the
jungle on a zip line,
and then get back to
the landing platform
within a couple of minutes.
So what do we do?
I tell you what I want to do.
I want to see it in action.
Officer Rose!
Yes, sir.
Fancy stretching your legs?
Say what?
I need you to do a bit of running.
I think this might just
be your moment, honey.
NAOMl: Officer Rose,
are you ready? Over.
Let's do this thing.
I mean, standing by. Over.
DARLENE: Seb, honey,
you wait for the Inspector's go.
Copy that.
Inspector? Are you ready? Over.
You know, in London
we never have to deal
with this sort of thing,
zip lines and jungle
and crumpled clothes.
I mean, is this thing
even risk-assessed?
Inspector,
this was your idea,
so quit your moaning.
Standing by. Over and out.
On your marks
EXHALES
Get set
Go! STOPWATCH BEEPS
This really isn't fun.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
People actually pay to do this?
MERVlN: Go, go, go! That's a go.
Eight minutes and 42 seconds.
Honey, I was very impressed.
Told you. Fastest guy I know.
Not fast enough.
You arrived six minutes after I did.
All four of our suspects
managed to get back in just two.
Oh
And that doesn't factor in the time
it took to climb back dawn the
tree after stabbing Jonny.
So how did our killer murder our victim
before arriving back
at the landing platform
in just a couple of minutes?
It's not possible.
There has to be more to it.
And what about this?
What is a pearl earring
doing at a crime scene?
It might not be connected
in any way, sir.
I mean, it could just
happen to be there.
That is a possibility.
We don't even know if
it's an earring for sure.
It could be something else.
You're right.
It could be something else.
And if it is
NAOMI: Cause of death
is a single knife wound
to the abdomen, 2 cm wide.
Do you think they wanted us to find it?
That could explain the how.
MERVlN: Of all the elaborate
ways to murder someone
And all during the filming
of a TV show. The victim had
a significant amount of painkillers
in his system.
Island Warrior!
Huh.
These four were elsewhere,
out of sight of anyone else.
Lisa, I liked her.
We were helping each other out on set.
MERVlN: We know you opened up to him
about the damage you'd done,
but Jonny didn't react
the way you expected.
CHAZ: He was angry.
Something about his knee injury.
The show that I've spent years
developing and working on
will now never be aired on TV.
Of course!
You know?
He knows.
I know.
What's exactly going on right now?
Cos I'm kind of out of the loop.
The Inspector has just solved the case.
Oh, right.
Nice, man.
So, um, do you want me to
go and gather the suspects?
If we must.
But I need to check
something first. DS Thomas,
get in contact with the
show's production office.
See if the costume or props
department recognise this.
Just stay away from me.
What did you say?
It's not all about you.
I found out some weird stuff.
So he's going to tell us
who the killer is and how them do it?
Exactly that.
Unreal!
Mm-hm!
MERVlN: Right.
I've got to say, as murders go,
this one was pretty extreme,
the victim being stabbed
as he was speeding dawn a zip line.
Alive at the top, when he set off,
but dead by the time
he reached the bottom.
And what has been bothering us
throughput all this
investigation was why.
Why go to all that
effort to murder someone?
I mean, there's got to be easier,
simpler ways, right?
And there are.
In fact, what our killer did
was so much more simple
than how it looked.
But that was the point -
to lead us dawn a false path,
so we would spend all
our time and energy
fussing over something that
never actually happened.
Because Jonny Feldon
wasn't stabbed on that zip wire.
In fact, he was already dying
before he began his descent.
Wasn't he Dale?
What? I'm saying it was you
that killed Jonny.
No, no, you're wrong.
No, I'm not.
Anyone take a guess what this is?
It looks like a pearl. Bingo.
It's also part of the murder weapon.
DS Thomas.
These are pearl headpins,
courtesy of the costume department.
These pins are over four inches long,
made of razor-sharp steel
and can go through the toughest fabrics.
And human flesh.
When you decided to murder Jonny Feldon,
you also made the decision to do it
using one of these bad boys.
Waiting until the coast was clear,
you stole a pin from the costume rail.
You said yourself that you and Lisa
were always helping
each other out on set.
Well, I went back through the footage
from the morning of the murder,
and there you are, helping Lisa
to put the contestants' backpacks on.
And it was while you
helped Jonny on with his
that you pierced the backpack's belt
and his abdomen.
Ah! Sorry.
Must have caught you in the buckle.
And when Jonny tightened his belt,
he forced the pin in deeper,
piercing his kidney.
We know Jonny was taking
some strong painkillers
for his leg injury,
so he hardly felt it.
And all he was focused
on was trying to win.
CHAZ: It's not over yet. LAUGHS
When Jonny got to the zip line,
he took his backpack off,
removing the pin and
opening up the wound.
And then he got on the zip wire.
MERVlN: And he seemed fine.
No-one would have noticed
a tiny speck of blood
on his mud-stained shirt.
But as he sped dawn that line,
the momentum
of the descent accelerated
his blood flow
and he bled out.
And by the time he reached the bottom
he was dead.
You then timed your arrival
at the landing platform
so you arrived first,
lowering his body,
obscured from the XZ36O camera,
that you had conveniently placed.
At which point,
Rick cleared the set
for the paramedics
OK, come on, everybody clear the set.
and you seized your
moment to stab Jonny
with this knife,
in the same tiny wound
that was made by the pin,
so that the postmortem
would only find a single knife wound.
In the following half-hour
you had two things you had to do.
First, you had to remove
the pin from the backpack
and clear up any visible
marks left on it.
You, then headed into the forest
and placed this blood-stained knife
near the zip wire,
making sure to trample the brush
and leave scuff marks
so it would look like
someone climbed the tree to kill Jonny.
But it was while you were
faking that crime scene
that you made one tiny mistake.
With all that running Jonny did,
all that weight from his backpack,
that tiny pearl had loosened,
and when it was back in
your pocket, it broke off.
And when you knelt dawn
and pulled out that decoy murder weapon,
that little pearl fell out.
If it hadn't, we'd never have found it,
and you might have literally
got away with murder.
But why? I don't understand why.
Why indeed? Well, for live,
wasn't it, Dale?
I mean, a very dysfunctional
kind of love for Miss Bulmer.
You were friends, right?
Yeah, we were friends,
but, like, nothing more.
For Dale, it was more.
I mean, a lot more.
MERVlN: You felt jealous. Yeah.
MERVlN: And you really liked her.
I just wanted more of of her.
And the thing is,
you already had a pretty strong
motive for killing Jonny.
That man was about to get you sacked,
probably arrested.
Your whole future in
television ruined. And now
he was about to ruin Lisa,
after she revealed to him her
plans to sabotage the show.
I think you realised
you could help Lisa
out as well, protect her.
I'm telling Rick everything
you've done, Lisa.
Kill two birds with one stone.
And that's what made
killing Jonny Feldon
all the more worthwhile,
because now you were
saving the woman you love
from having her life destroyed.
All of which explains
why the murder had to be so public,
in the middle of filming.
It was the final flourish,
because, Dale, killing Jonny
during the middle of the Grand Final
would completely destroy the game show
that Rick Mayhew stole from Lisa.
What?
In killing Jonny Yes, you did.
Dale not only believed
he was saving himself,
but he was giving Lisa
everything she wanted,
in the vain hope of
winning her affection.
I didn't mean for it to
end this way. I'm sorry.
I just wanted to make things all right,
I just wanted to make
things better for you.
Up you get.
You do not have to say anything
Inspector, that was, like,
the greatest thing I've
ever seen in my life.
Ever! Respect, man.
All right.
PHONE BUZZES
Commissioner? I just wanted to say
well done.
Thank you to you and the team.
Selwyn,
JP just called.
He told me about your jib,
that they're phasing it out. Yeah.
I knew something wasn't right about you.
But they can't do this.
But it seems they can, and they have.
The Chief Commissioner
officially informed me yesterday.
But why?
It seems it comes back to one thing.
To save money.
But we all need you here.
The island needs you.
So
what are you going to do?
I don't know.
I just want to say
I'm sorry if I unsettled you
when we spoke the other night.
The Commissioner has asked me to clarify
this is not an official
murder investigation.
But we are looking into the possibility
that Dorna Bray's death
might not have been an accident.
Is there anything else that's
come back to you since,
about Dorna, that day she died?
Nothing that would be useful.
But something?
No, it's so small.
It's silly. Please.
I just remember,
that morning I was
watering my garden and
I heard her singing.
Singing? She often would,
just about the house,
just for herself.
A-And what was she singing?
It was a John Holt song,
Dusty Roads.
It must have been her favourite.
She was always singing it.
