Deception (2018) s01e07 Episode Script

Sacrifice 99 to Fool One

1 CAMERON: I'm Cameron Black.
I was the world's greatest illusionist, while nobody knew I had a twin brother behind the scenes.
Until the night he was framed for murder.
JONATHAN: The woman in the car with me had different color eyes.
Now I've teamed up with the FBI.
- You're Cameron Black.
- That's Agent Kay Daniels - I know a few tricks, too.
- and we have a deal.
She helps me prove my brother's innocent.
I help her solve the kind of crimes only a master of deception could crack.
I feel like we should be chasing somebody.
Thankfully, I don't work alone.
For my team of illusionists, there's no criminal we can't trick, no killer we can't track.
Like I always say, nothing's impossible.
Previously on "Deception" We found Bishop's notebook.
Now, we think the mystery woman's next move is gonna be in there somewhere, but it's written in a code that the FBI's best cryptographers can't crack.
We figure out what's in there, we're one step closer to getting you out of here.
[Coin clinks.]
[Echoing.]
It's right there in front of you.
You just can't see it.
You're not smart enough to catch me, Johnny.
[Echoing.]
I'm dreaming.
You can't stop thinking about me.
Because you destroyed my life.
[Scoffs.]
What life? Hiding in the shadows? Cheating on your girlfriend with me? I will find you.
What are you gonna do to me when you find me? [Muffled door buzzer.]
What are you after? [Grunts.]
[Ringing.]
[Cellphone rings.]
JONATHAN: Cam.
Hey, man.
Time for another therapy session? I got a lot to analyze.
I cracked the Mystery Woman's code.
That's great, Johnny.
We can talk about it later.
I'm kind of tired.
Figured out what the next target is.
- Cam, are you listening? - I Yeah.
[Fans speaking indistinctly.]
Cam, it's you.
Johnny, there's something wrong.
There's all these people that are filming me.
Run.
Cam, you got to run.
Hello, Cameron.
[Aerosol hisses.]
Aah! Cameron.
Cameron! Hey! [Pounding on door.]
You got to call the FBI.
I do? Look, please please, there's no time.
Warden only approved one call.
I get that, I do, but, please, my brother is in trouble.
- One call means one call.
- I understand that.
If you would just 5 goes in the corner, 2, 6, 8, 9.
All done.
Would you please call the damn FBI right now?! All right, all right, please! Just call Would you please?! - Get him out of here.
- All right, I'm going.
[Toilet flushes.]
[Dialing.]
This is Jonathan Black.
I need to speak to Special Agent Kay Daniels.
Tell her my brother's in trouble.
GPS on Cameron's phone led us here.
Detective Bryan Weeks, NYPD.
My guys haven't found anything.
I want this area taped off.
- It's not a crime scene.
- A man was abducted here.
- There's no evidence of that.
- Then go find some.
Hey, ease up a bit.
He didn't do it.
- We both know who did.
- We don't know anything yet.
We'll find Cameron.
Just take a breath.
[Cellphone ringing.]
Jonathan was right she took him.
Detective Weeks! I need you to pull all the security-camera footage facing this alley.
With all due respect, Agent Daniels, a civilian has to be missing 24 hours before we can do anything.
- You know that.
- He is one of us.
What? You called him a civilian.
He's one of us.
If one of your guys went missing, would you wait 24 hours? I'll get the footage myself.
Thank you.
Oh, God.
What the hell happened here? Cameron told Jonathan that there was a large group of people filming.
Were they all working for her? She steals random artifacts.
Now she kidnaps Cameron? How did she do it? Cameron would know.
He can't help us on this one.
So, what do you do when you lose your Master of Deception? You get another one.
- [Door buzzer.]
- Oh, oh, oh oh oh, oh Oh, oh, oh oh oh, oh You've been my vagabond You sure about this? Nope.
He's unpredictable.
Yep.
This could go sideways.
You have a better idea? Just remember, he's not Cameron.
I know.
Oh, oh, oh oh oh, oh - Oh, oh, oh oh oh, oh - Let's go find my brother.
[Lock clicking.]
[Clears throat.]
Oh, I'm sorry, big guy.
- [Ankle monitor beeps.]
- Better? Well, that depends.
Am I supposed to feel my foot? He's good to go.
Thanks, Mark.
Okay.
As you can see, Mike has just equipped you with an ankle monitor.
It has an advanced GPS tracker built into it.
Fancy.
You will stay within 50 yards of Agent Daniels at all times.
If you decide to stray 51 yards or more from Agent Daniels Ooh.
I get an electric shock? My watch beeps.
That's it? That, and you'll be considered a fugitive.
And if you remove it Yeah, I get it bald Ricky Martin gets to shoot me.
Now, can we cut through all this GPS B.
S.
and go find Cameron? You talk less than your brother good.
Go get him.
You want to see the team first? Yeah.
Cameron's blocked in every single frame.
Who Who are all these people? When I find out who these cowards are And they're they're all on the phones.
I'm gonna start with their fingernails, just like in the war.
What are you gonna do with their fingernails? You don't want to know.
Then Then why'd you put that image in my head? All I'm thinking about is fingernails.
You guys throw out the sandwich I left in the fridge? Johnny boy! [Chuckles.]
- Gunter ate it.
- It was delicious.
Welcome back, son.
Hey.
Welcome home.
It's a round-trip ticket, so don't get too excited.
It's good to be here.
Yeah.
You find anything? Um, we've analyzed the security footage from last night, but we can't see what's happened to Cameron.
He's blocked at every angle.
Maybe that was her plan.
What plan? Why Why does she want him? Maybe it's sexual.
Oh, what is wrong with you? She took him for a reason.
The question is what? She's already a master of deception.
What does Cam have? I've never heard of needing so many people to kidnap one.
Sacrifice 99 to fool one.
It's an illusion where the entire audience is in on the trick just to fool one member of it.
Can I demonstrate? Matt? It's Mike.
And I don't like magic.
Since when? Okay.
One trick.
Take a seat.
Thanks so much for volunteering.
This trick is called Slydini's Flight of the Paper Balls.
Hold that for me.
All you got to do is watch this ball.
I'm gonna put it in my hand and give it a little tap, and it's gonna disappear, all right? So, watch super-carefully as I give it a tap - and it disappears.
- Where'd it go? - [Chuckles.]
- Okay.
We'll try one more time.
I'm gonna take the ball, all right? Watch carefully as I put it in my hand, give it a couple of taps.
- You see it that time? - [Laughing.]
- What's so funny? - I don't think he's paying attention.
It's going over your head every time.
What's so funny? I don't I don't get it.
[Chuckles.]
Johnny, that's enough.
KAY: So, you're saying all of those people last night knew that Cameron was gonna be abducted? JONATHAN: Not necessarily.
There's a difference between being in on the trick and being part of the trick.
My guess is, they just served their purpose.
Take me to the crime scene.
We already swept the crime scene.
You missed something.
You know, he's doing it on purpose.
Maybe he's just threatened by you.
Well, he should be.
Look, can we just focus? On what? We already did this.
There's no point being here.
It's a waste of time.
And he is He's gone.
Where did Jonathan go? He's close.
Mmm.
MIKE: You've got to be kidding.
I missed these.
The stuff they serve in prison should be considered cruel and unusual punishment.
You do realize your brother's still missing, right? You seen it yet? Seen what? Remember Andre the Giant? The wrestler? Yeah! Very good, Matt.
The incredibly large wrestler, hence the moniker.
Back in 1989, a design student used Andre's image in a sticker campaign that appeared all over the world "Andre the Giant Has a Posse.
" I remember those.
You'd even see them in bathrooms.
Exactly.
See, it was an experiment in phenomenology the idea that you can see something but not really be aware of it.
They just put the stickers everywhere so they just kind of blended in to your everyday life.
- Now they're a clothing line.
- What's your point, Jonathan? The brick wall in the alley, ATM, parking meter what do they have in common? The Q sticker? Most people walk straight by them.
They see them, but they're not consciously aware of them.
In order to be aware of them, you got to look for them.
Unless you're me.
I just kind of always - saw the patterns without trying.
- [Camera shutter clicking.]
See that guy's shirt? It's the same Q.
Hey, Mike? Somebody's watching us.
Freeze! FBI! - Stop! - Freeze! What are you doing here?! Uh, sorry.
I-I-I'm sorry.
I-I just I heard he was over here, and I just wanted to check myself.
What? She thinks you're Cameron.
Are you a fan? No.
Uh, I just wanted to boost my points for the the Octagon.
What is that? Symbol for Quest Trek.
MIKE: Wait.
Quest Trek the game? Yeah, it's like Pokémon Go! except way cooler.
It's a mobile game.
That's why they were using their phones.
They weren't filming Cameron.
They were playing a game.
Congratulations.
You're worth a million points.
Am I doing it wrong? No.
I'm just not a target.
Try aiming it at him.
Whoa.
You're glowing.
Thanks.
Exercise, healthy diet prison.
That's what a million points looks like.
The, uh, map in the game alerts you whenever there's a target nearby.
These targets, they're always actual people? No.
That was just one challenge.
It's never the same thing twice.
It's what makes Quest Trek so great.
I mean, I didn't think playing it would get me into trouble.
We know you've done nothing wrong.
Does that mean I can go home? Soon.
Promise.
Can you tell us about the Octagon first? - What is it? - It's the final Quest.
At Roosevelt Island.
The top point-getters in the world come together to compete in a winner-take-all Quest.
Here's my invitation.
It's today.
You think the Mystery Woman used a mobile game that has 2 million users worldwide to abduct Cameron? - Yes.
- How's that possible? Well, we don't know yet.
Maybe she hacked it.
We'll find out at the Octagon.
- The what? - The Octagon.
It's the final Quest Trek event.
Maybe somebody who works for the Mystery Woman will be there.
You trust him? I trust that he wants to save his brother.
Don't let him out of your sight.
JONATHAN: Remember the last time you put me in disguise? Paris, New Year's Eve, 2015.
Still not sure which was worse the fake mustache or the beret.
The beret not your best look.
Seems like a lifetime ago.
Yeah.
We had a good time, though, huh? Certainly wasn't boring.
Speaking of boring, how's that going? Johnny Well, it's not a "thing" thing, is it? Am I allowed to hope that it is? Has he kissed you yet? I'm not talking about that with you.
- Well, why don't you just - No.
Let's focus on trying to find your brother.
You need a pair of glasses.
I'm losing everything, Gunter.
Well, this might help you with that.
A belt? Yeah, I made the buckle myself.
Lockpicks very nice.
[Chuckles.]
You've always had my back, Johnny.
Now I've got yours.
- What's up, Mike? - Jordan.
Okay.
This sucks for you, huh? What? You know.
No, I actually don't.
The two elephants in the room that used to date while the third elephant watches them reunite.
That's not even close to an expression.
I know what it's like to come in second place.
[Chuckles.]
It's not a competition, Jordan.
I see what you're trying to do, Mike.
You're creating a fourth elephant in the room - [Cellphone rings.]
- and I respect that.
- Again - We'll finish this talk later.
No No, we don't have to, really.
All right.
Perfection.
You look like a million bucks.
Or a million points.
[Chuckles.]
[Dance music plays.]
This is it The Octagon.
Used to be an insane asylum back in the '40s.
It's been closed for decades.
Now it's hosting a surprisingly cool party.
Not what I expected.
What'd you expect? My junior high school dance, bunch of nerds, a few punch bowls Mrs.
Kaminsky yelling at me to go home and put on a longer dress.
I see why Cam likes working with you.
- Hey, we're gonna find him.
- Oh, I know.
Just means a lot how much you care about him.
For the record, my relationship with Cameron is strictly professional.
Oh, yeah, no, I know.
You're not his type.
[Cheers and applause.]
Welcome to The Octagon! [Cheers and applause.]
If you're here today, that means you are the best of the best, and we have created the most challenging Quest any of you have ever participated in.
Without further delay, it is time for you all to enter The Octagon.
[Cheers and applause.]
WOMAN: Who's ready for today's Quest? [Cheers and applause.]
One of the former patients of this institution wrote cryptic riddles all over the walls.
The first player to answer every riddle correctly will be awarded 5 million points.
- Good luck.
- [Cheers and applause.]
That voice that was her.
That's the Mystery Woman.
- Are you sure? - I'll never forget that voice.
Why waste her time with a game? Because it's not just a game to her.
It's like when she took Cameron.
The game was a disguise for an actual kidnapping.
My guess is, the story she's telling is true, but she doesn't know the answer.
I think she's crowdsourcing Quest Trek's brain power to help her figure something out.
Let's go talk to the C.
E.
O.
and find out if he even knows he's working for a criminal mastermind.
Uh, whoa, whoa.
What about the Quest? What about it? She's obviously after something important.
I can solve the riddle, I can figure out what it is.
Oh, what? You don't want to split up? You don't trust me.
We just don't have any way to communicate.
If you can trust Cameron, you can trust me.
Look, Bauer's press conference is about to start.
Please, you have to let me try.
I need to know why she framed me and why she took Cam, and this Quest could hold the answer to that.
Do not leave the building.
All right.
You have my word.
Jonathan.
I am trusting you.
MAN: Next player up.
JONATHAN: What's your name? Albert.
How's this work, Albert? It's a riddle.
You have 10 minutes to solve it, and then you tell me the answer.
Why should I tell you the answer? Because that's how you win the game.
So you already know the answer? Yeah, but I can't tell you.
Oh, I already know.
The passage is a misdirect.
It's about the words that are separated by one letter, like "bathed" and "bated.
" Take away the H, it's the same word.
Rotated, rotted, flame, fame All of the extra letters spell out the word "Halifax.
" That's correct.
So what happens now? You move on to the next room.
[Keys rattle.]
What can you tell us about tonight's difficult Quest? BAUER: In 1948, a patient here at the Octagon had a hobby of writing puzzles on the walls and boasting about an heirloom that held the key to finding a hidden fortune.
So these puzzles were all created in 1948 by this patient? No, most of them were created by our talented team.
But anyone who is smart enough to make it to the end of the Quest will have to solve an actual puzzle from the patient's own room.
Hmm.
Red, white, and blue.
How very patriotic.
You do know that some apples are green, though, right, Jessica? It's kind of lazy.
I don't create the puzzles.
Who does? Someone who gets paid more than me.
Do you have a guess or not? Let's start with "apple.
" Wait.
You can't write on the board.
All red words apple, heart, stop sign, cardinal, ladybug gives us an S.
The white words cotton ball, tooth, albino, and cloud give us a U.
And, finally, the blue words peacock, robins' eggs, jeans, ocean, and public mailbox.
S-U-N spells Sun.
What's next? - [Door opens.]
- What? You don't design any of the Quests? I tend to stay on the business side of things.
The real brains is the architect of the Quests.
I credit her with the game's popularity.
And how long have you been working together? About a year.
Would you mind giving me her name for my article? No, of course not.
It's Addison Lake.
Would you like to meet her? She's here right now? This is it.
This is the real room.
This is where the patient lived.
My God, he hated it here.
There's so much anger on these walls.
He didn't think he belonged here.
No patterns, though.
It's just frustration.
Wait.
[Chuckles.]
There it is.
In the stars.
He re-created the night sky.
Addison.
She's not here.
I was just talking to her a moment ago.
Serpens, Sagittarius, Capricornus It's remarkable.
This guy must've been brilliant to replicate all these constellations so It's not perfect.
There's There's too many stars.
Ursa Major has an extra star on its tail, but it seems deliberate.
[Chuckles.]
Of course.
The extra stars all make up a bigger constellation.
[Tongue clicking.]
Shaped like a W.
The Lynx.
That's the answer, isn't it? Lynx.
But you didn't know that till just now.
Thank you, Jonathan.
No.
No! [Lock clicks.]
[Grunts.]
That was a brilliant display.
Where's Cameron? What have you done with him? Why are you doing this to us?! It's a game.
You're the pawns.
[Pounding on door, grunting.]
Thank you so much for playing.
[Grunts.]
[Monitor beeps.]
What are you doing, Jonathan? She's on her way.
[Grunts.]
I need backup on Roosevelt Island.
[Boat engine starts.]
Stop! Drop the gun, Jonathan! Please don't make me shoot you.
I had her.
I told you to stay within 50 yards of Agent Daniels, - and what did you do? - I was chasing the Mystery Woman, and if Kay hadn't stopped me, I'd have caught her.
If I hadn't stopped you, you would've killed her.
So? We're done here.
Is that what this was about for you all along? Getting revenge? It's about saving Cam.
And how did you expect to help Cam with the Mystery Woman dead? I don't know.
All right? I was chasing her.
She was getting away.
That's it.
When you were pointing the gun at her, were you even thinking about saving Cameron? No.
I was thinking about killing her.
That's why this was a mistake.
Mike's gonna take you back to the prison.
We still haven't found Cameron.
We'll find him.
You don't know why she took him.
You need my help.
Convince Deakins to give me another chance.
It was my idea to take you out of the prison, and it was my idea to send you back.
I can't trust you.
You're enjoying this, aren't you? There are consequences to breaking the rules.
Were these necessary? Standard protocol.
Right.
Just so you know, Dina prefers rule-breakers to guys who follow standard protocol.
Or just use the word "protocol.
" She's too good for you, man.
Probably.
She's too good for me, too.
[Chuckling.]
Definitely.
We not going back to prison? Yep.
Not to complain, but it's, uh it's in the other direction.
Thought we would stop at the Archive first.
I'm pretty sure she would want to see you.
Thanks, man.
Addison Lake isn't a real person? KAY: She just gave you a fake name.
How did you meet her? She came to me about a year ago with all these smart, original ideas.
Like today's Quest.
I thought it was clever to have the asylum challenge the day before the big auction.
How was I supposed to know the Rockefeller's kid's writings were real? Rockefeller? Of the Rockefellers? Yes.
He was a young patient in the late '40s, told everyone his family had this key to some hidden fortune.
But just like I told you, he wasn't well.
No one took him seriously.
Until now.
Thank you.
What big auction were you just referring to? The Rockefeller Collection at Devlin's Auction House.
It's tomorrow night.
I heard what happened.
Everything? Just that the Mystery Woman was at the Octagon and that, uh - I almost killed her.
- Yeah.
Cycling through reality Lost control.
I, uh lost sight of what's important.
It's not the first time that's happened.
They can't trust me anymore, so Mike's gonna take me back to prison.
What? Mike, we haven't found Cameron yet, and you know that Jonathan is our best chance.
It It's not my decision.
I wasn't even supposed to bring him here.
Hey, where's Jordan? He's around.
I'll go look for him.
Listen, whenever you need more help, you just say when, okay? Go find Cam, all right? All right, be good.
I'll be fine.
I got this.
- It's a diamond! - What? - Lynx it's a diamond.
- Slow down.
Lance Bauer, the C.
E.
O.
of Quest Trek, said today's challenge was about a patient a Rockefeller who bragged about holding the key to a hidden fortune.
- Seriously? - I know.
But there is an auction at Devlin's tomorrow night the Rockefeller Collection jewelry, artwork, expensive stuff.
The Mystery Woman must've known she had to steal something from the collection.
She just didn't know what.
The answer was in the riddle that Jonathan solved.
It was Lynx.
Look at this.
Item number 71 on the auction list the Lynx Diamond.
She's gonna try and steal it.
BATZ: You want us to do what? Postpone tomorrow's auction.
Do you have any idea how much money Devlin's stands to lose if we postpone? Our guests have flown in from all over the world.
We have credible evidence that someone's gonna try to steal the Lynx Diamond tomorrow.
Well, I'd like to see them try.
We have over 100 auctions each year with transactions totaling $2 billion.
We have one of the most state-of-the-art security systems in the world.
They'll have to get past our facial-recognition software.
Welcome, Mr.
Morel.
We also have motion sensors so sensitive, they can catch a single hair falling from the ceiling.
- [Alarm blaring.]
- And once the diamond is locked away in our vault, we have a 6-inch steel door, thermal imaging, our own army.
And if all else fails, the preservation system sucks all the air out of the vault.
The auction is happening.
You can assist if you'd like, but I assure you, the only way someone's gonna get the Lynx Diamond is with a winning bid.
- [Sighs.]
- She's gonna rob them blind.
- How? - I don't know.
But there are two people who would, and the Mystery Woman took one of them.
You think that's why she took Cameron? Isn't she capable of stealing the diamond on her own? Maybe she doesn't want to get her hands dirty.
Either way, she's gonna be nearly impossible to stop without Jonathan Black's help.
Look, I know he broke every single rule we gave him, but he's the only one who can do this.
I need him.
[Classical music plays.]
So, you think the Mystery Woman took Cameron to help her steal a diamond.
That's the theory.
Thank you.
Except that he would never help her.
I'm not saying he would.
I'm just saying he would know how to.
All right.
So you want me to tell you whatever he would tell her.
You still trust me? No.
But we both want your brother back.
That's what this is about.
So, what's so special about this diamond? We don't know yet, but she's doing everything in her power to get it.
Devlin's security is top-notch.
There's no way she's doing this alone.
So someone in this room's helping her.
Who are the guests? KAY: That's Philip Edwards.
Claims he's a distant member of the Royal Family.
[Camera shutter clicking.]
- Mostly clean.
- I don't like him.
How about that guy? Prince of Montenegro, Stefan Prifot.
He's worth more money than everybody in this room combined.
- [Camera shutter clicking.]
- Don't like him, either.
Over by the door is Henri Morel.
French international financier.
[Camera shutter clicking.]
We think he's connected to some illegal activities, but he's also a regular here at Devlin's.
Mm.
Let me guess you don't like him, either.
If they're smart, they'll do this after the auction when there are fewer eyes on the diamond.
And if Cam did have anything to do with this, it'll be fast.
I'm the more deliberate one.
I like to plan things.
But Cam, he's, uh [Scoffs.]
He's like lightning.
Blink and you miss him.
Dina, Jordan, do you have eyes on us? Yeah, we've got you and every other inch of this place.
So many screens.
This is rad.
KAY: How are Gunter and Mike? They're with the diamond in the vault.
Talking about God knows what.
So, you and Jonathan go way back, huh? All the way back.
He found me when I was at the lowest point in my life.
Gave me a job, gave me purpose.
I owe him everything.
Would you help him escape? [Scoffs.]
Absolutely 100%.
Good to know.
But, you know, he'd never ask.
He wouldn't want to break Dina's heart, being on the run and that.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Kay, we're all set here in the vault.
What's going on out there? We're set.
The auction's about to begin.
CLARA: Oh, my God.
Cameron Black.
[Chuckles.]
You got to be kidding me.
You're the one who wanted to wear Cameron's suit.
We've been to all your shows.
I thought we'd never see you again after that dreadful business with your brother.
Well, here we are.
He destroyed your career, everything.
I guess it's noble, how you stood by him, but I personally think that You know, I'm sorry, but we need to be going.
Oh, wait! Please.
You have to do a trick for us.
Sure.
Keep an eye on the bidders.
See who looks over.
What was your name again? - Clara.
- Clara.
Nice to meet you, Clara.
What I have here is a coin.
Now, this isn't just any old coin.
This is my lucky coin.
Standing two steps down I fell into the hole in the ground You can make the plan Once you got it [Clara laughs.]
Once you need it the most Once you got it Okay.
Just open your bracelet for me.
[Laughs.]
[Applause.]
Thank you, Clara.
Henri.
You caught his eye.
Let's go.
Diamond's on the way.
DINA: You have a clear path to the main room.
KAY: Thanks, Dina.
- Did you see that? - See what? The guard put something on the communication box.
I'll check it out.
Okay, be careful.
Sold to bidder number 26 for $400,000.
400 grand for that? Jonathan.
Next up for bidding, from the Rockefeller jewelry collection, number 71, the Lynx Diamond.
Here we go.
It's beautiful.
We'll start the bidding at $1 million.
We have $1 million over here.
$1.
1 million.
Do we have $1.
2 million? $1.
2 million over there.
$1.
3 million? $1.
3 million.
$2 million.
Do we have $2.
1 million? $2.
1 million? $2.
1 million right there.
What are you doing? I always wanted to do that.
The hallway's all clear.
Uh, guys? Guys, I'm losing cameras.
Something's happening.
- It's happening.
- What? They're taking the diamond right now.
$5 million.
$5 million from bidder number 12.
Do we have $5.
1 million? $5.
1 million.
$5.
5 million, thank you.
$6 million, bidder number 12.
It's him.
It's him.
It's Henri.
