What a wet blanket You say something?! It was worth renting a car and coming all the way here, huh?! For sure.
What do you say we take a picture? Here, you two stand over there! Let's go, Conan-kun! Yeah! Use the timer so you can get in the picture too! Sure! Just a sec! My name is Conan Edogawa.
This is the would-be famous detective, Kogoro Mouri.
And this is my childhood friend and classmate, Ran Mouri.
Eh? How can she be my classmate? The truth is, I'm actually high school detective Shin'ichi Kudo.
Yes.
It all began on that day I went to Tropical Land with Ran, and there I witnessed a mysterious organization blackmailing someone.
Man in Black Vodka I watched Vodka, a man dressed in black, while Gin, another man in black, snuck up behind me.
Man in Black Gin I was knocked to the ground and forced to take a poison the organization had developed.
M-My body's burning up! It's like my bones are melting! I can't hold on! When a police officer woke me up— my body had shrunk! So all we need to do is find those guys and get some of those pills! Listen, Shin'ichi! If they find out you're still alive, they'll come back to take care of you for good! This must stay a secret between just the two of us! You mustn't tell anyone at all! That means not even Ran-kun! This old man is Dr.
Agasa, an inventor.
In my shrunken state, I became Conan Edogawa and wound up living with Ran and her detective father, in the hopes of obtaining information about the men in black.
But he's a horrible detective, so I used the Doc's Anesthetic Watch Gun to put him to sleep and my Voice-Altering Bow Tie to solve all sorts of difficult cases.
And that's my life as Conan so far.
When will I be able to turn back to normal? Oh well.
It'll happen when it happens! Cheese! Well, we should head back.
It looks like there's a shortcut up ahead, so let's take it.
Are you sure about this, Dad? We're not going to get lost, are we? We'll be fine, don't worry! Let's get going.
See, I told you! Now we're not only lost, but we have a flat tire too! Our fun trip's ruined now! Shut up! Just what we need—rain.
What now?! It's 20 or 30 kilometers to the bottom of the mountain! We have no other choice.
It doesn't look like anyone lives around here, so we'll have to spend the night in the car.
I don't want to camp out in a place like this! Can't you fix the flat tire?! No spare.
Two flat tires in one day—talk about bad luck Huh? Where'd he go? Eh? Conan-kun? Where are you, Conan-kun? What're you so worked up about? It was just a bird.
What is it, Ran-neechan? What was that scream? What are you talking about? Anyway, where were you?! You shouldn't wander off on your own like that! I found a temple up ahead.
I bet someone lives there! You're right, there is a temple there.
We're saved! Okay! Let's go check it out! Yeah! That's a really impressive place.
Sandei Temple It looks like our only option is to ask to stay the night Hello? Pardon the intrusion! Is anyone here? What do you want? I asked you what you want here! I take it you're from a newspaper or television station? Leave! This place is not meant for uncouth vermin such as yourselves! No, we were just passing by when we got a flat tire.
We were wondering if we could stay here for the night What? You want to stay here?! Yes But if that's a problem, we'll leave right away— Oh! Why didn't you say so sooner?! I had you pegged as reporters who came here about the incident "The incident"? Oh, nothing of importance.
One night plus vegetarian meals is 10,000 yen per adult and 8,000 yen per child.
This temple also serves as a small inn Take it or leave it.
It's six hours to the bottom of the mountain.
Walk if you'd like.
I haven't said no yet I see.
Hey, we have our first guests in a long time! Wait! I haven't said yes yet, either Take my advice.
Stay the night.
On rainy nights such as tonight, there's no way to know where it may be lurking "It"? Is there a bear out there? A bear? It's not nearly as adorable, I'm afraid No, I refer to an ancient beast that prefers rain and darkness and devours people's souls The Kiri Tengu! The Kiri Tengu?! What am I thinking?! That name is taboo here! Forget what I just said! Huh? Oh, here you are.
Allow me to introduce you to the four priests-in-training at this temple.
This is Kan'nen.
He has been here the longest and is like an older brother to the others.
Priest-in-training Kan'nen (21) Pleased to meet you! Priest-in-training Ton'nen (19) This is Ton'nen.
He may eat a lot, but he's a great cook and strong, too.
Priest-in-training Mokunen (19) This is Mokunen.
We leave all the carpentry work to him and his dexterous fingers.
It's nice to meet you! Priest-in-training Shunen (18) This here is Shunen.
He came to our temple just this year and although he's a bit timid, his passion for studying is unrivaled.
Hello.
And I'm Ten'ei—the head priest of this temple.
Head Priest Priest Ten'ei (71) Ton'nen and Mokunen, prepare our dinner.
Kan'nen and Shunen, show our guests around the temple.
Understood! Looks like we're staying.
Damn it! With the late fee on the rental car and the cost to stay here, I won't have any money for booze this month! This is Sandei Temple's main hall.
It certainly is impressive.
What do you say to having your own funeral services here? Just kidding! Lousy priest This way, if you would Huh? Why does that room have a lock on it? Empty Wait, little boy! That's— It's just a small room Little boy! That's one tall ceiling! What is this room? What is it? Our meditation room.
They used to lock priests in here who broke religious precepts to make them reflect on their mistakes.
No wonder it's built so solidly And they covered the room with lacquer to prevent climbing out Say, why does this part of the wall have a different color? Mokunen-san fixed that after it was broken during the incident.
Isn't that right, Kan'nen-san? What incident? It happened before I came to this temple, so I don't know the details.
- But apparently the Kiri Tengu— - That's enough, Shunen! Our visitors don't need to hear about it! Sorry Huh? What's that sound? The waterfall.
Would you like to see it? It's right next to this room! Conan-kun! Hurry up! Okay! Wow! The waterfall's so close! Amazing! Look! Some of the water's even flowing over the handrail! Careful, now.
While there is a drainboard there, you don't want to slip and fall.
Oh! Cherry blossom petals! Yes.
They fall down from the cherry trees above.
Elegant, isn't it? Let's go back.
Dinner should be ready by now.
Priests have an image of being stiff, but you actually have lots of time to have fun! Yeah! Sometimes we even go to the beach during our breaks! We take out the temple's inflatable boat and beach ball And the head priest is quite fond of girls in bikinis! That's enough.
Say, I've been wondering about it for a while, but what's the Kiri Tengu? Where did you hear that name?! Forgive me.
I allowed my mouth to get ahead of myself.
Head Priest! It's just an absurd old tale.
On rainy nights, the ancient Tengu creeps into the village and uses its tremendous strength to smash into houses and kidnap their inhabitants.
It soars to the top of tall trees, hangs the corpses, and devours their flesh! He kidnaps only young girls who have tender meat! Yes, girls just like you But it's just a legend, don't take it seriously! You heard him.
But But it's not just a story There was an eerie incident just like that, two years ago Mokunen! Say, why don't you ask them the details about that incident! After all, you are Kogoro Mouri, Great Detective! You might find something out! The great detective?! - Mouri?! - Mouri?! - Kogoro?! - Kogoro?! You're famous! Only you could ever solve that difficult case! Please listen, Detective! Two years ago, a young priest— Silence! Have you forgotten our promise to never speak of that incident again?! But Head Priest! Dinner is over! Return to your rooms and get ready to sleep! Detective.
I will let you stay the night, but I want you to leave the temple early tomorrow morning.
Don't take it personally.
Okay Dad.
Tengu aren't real, are they? Obviously not.
Do you really think kappa and oni really exist? Tengu are the same—imaginary creatures invented by people.
I guess you're right Actually, the ancient Chinese referred to shooting stars that made loud, thunder-like sounds as "Heavenly Dogs," or Tengu, thus the name.
In China, such shooting stars were considered unlucky omens.
Those beliefs came to Japan, and Tengu changed from strange phenomenon to strange monsters! For a little runt you sure know lots of weird things.
I, uh, saw it on a TV show the other day So there's nothing to be afraid of, Ran-neechan! Don't be silly, I'm not afraid of anything! Well, let's get some sleep.
Conan-kun.
If you get scared during the night, you can come sleep with me! Nighty night! Hey, now.
Listen, Conan-kun.
If you get scared during the night, you can come sleep with me! He kidnaps only young girls who have tender meat! Yes, girls just like you Stupid Ran, waking us up in the middle of the night! What's the big deal?! I can't help that I'm a scaredy-cat! Hey, what do you think that incident was? Heck if I know.
He doesn't want to talk about it, so it's best not to ask.
As if the Kiri Tengu would actually appear Oh? What is this about me? See! You're a scaredy-cat too! Ran! Where'd you get that mask?! It was hanging in the bathroom.
Why you What happened?! Nothing Good night, Kan'nen-san! Pleasant dreams! I shouldn't have brought this! Now what do I do? You shouldn't have put it on in the first place! Now I'm wide awake.
Breakfast is ready.
Okay! We'll be there soon! You look pretty tired, Shunen-san Yes.
I was up late last night reading Please excuse me.
You didn't get much sleep either, Mokunen-san? No thanks to your screaming! I couldn't get any sleep after that! Sorry But that's nothing compared to Ton'nen, he hasn't slept at all.
Where are the head priest and Kan'nen-san? We haven't seen the head priest, so Kan'nen went to look for him He's probably in a room somewhere downing some sake— That was Kan'nen's voice! It sounded like it came from the meditation room! What is it?! Up there! Head Priest Ten'ei! The victim was this temple's head priest, Ten'ei.
He died approximately between 10:00 PM and 12:00 AM last night.
And you were the one who found his body.
Correct, Kan'nen-san? Yes.
We didn't see him this morning, so I went to look for him.
And then I found him in this meditation room And by yet another strange coincidence, the person who rushed here after the scream was— I, Kogoro Mouri, Inspector Megure! But that was one extraordinary scream, Kan'nen-san! Not nearly as extraordinary as yours! You have really keen senses, don't you, Kan'nen-san? After all, the head priest was hanging all the way up there.
If it were me, I probably wouldn't have seen him right away That is strange, Kan'nen-san.
You didn't happen to already know that he was hanging from the roof, did you? Nothing of the sort! I just— It was only natural for him to find it.
Mokunen The exact same thing happened in this room two years ago Two years ago?! Yes.
I was in charge of that case too.
I believe the one who died was a priest-in-training named Chunen.
And it was Kan'nen-san and Mokunen-san who found the body, right? Yes.
It happened during the rainy season After coming into this room to meditate, Chunen tore a big hole in the wall and disappeared.
We looked for three days and three nights, but he was nowhere to be found.
We assumed he had fled the temple, and on the morning of the 4th day, I came into this room with Kan'nen to fix the wall.
When we happened to glance upward there was Chunen-san, hanging from the ceiling! Is this hole the same place that was broken last time? Yes.
At first, we thought that Chunen-san made it to escape, but the door to this room wasn't locked, and a local carpenter who came to fix the outer wall said it would take an entire day for a person to make a hole that big! He said the only thing that could have done it was that powerful and ancient beast the Kiri Tengu! The Kiri Tengu?! Ridiculous.
There's no such thing.
Inspector! It really is exactly like two years ago.
The two side beams are covered in dust, and there are no signs of anything touching them.
A bit of dust has been knocked off the middle beam, but that's because of the rope tied to it.
There are no rub marks to indicate he was hoisted up.
Do you suppose this was a suicide too? Suicide? Yeah, you can manage to get up there if you climb across the beams and use rope like that officer, but it's a different story if you're trying to carry someone up there.
The late priest Chunen and the head priest weren't all that small.
Scaling the rope with them tied to your back would be nigh impossible.
If you tied the noose around their necks and hoisted them up, it would leave marks on the beam.
Someone could have climbed up first and then pulled them up, but that narrow beam is the only place to stand, so it's extremely unlikely.
Which means they must have climbed the ropes themselves, made a noose while on the beam, and then jumped off with the noose around their necks.
Some leftover rope and an axe probably used to cut it were found on the ground, so it would seem that was case.
But what has me wondering is that hole in the wall it's exactly like last time! I don't know how they broke the wall, but they probably broke it and hanged themselves from a tall ceiling to make it look like that old legend.
Almost as if to suggest to us that they were attacked by the flying Kiri Tengu.
That ridiculous tale sends everyone in a panic But doesn't this broken wall seem strange? There was a sliding panel here, right? Yeah For such a big hole in the wall, there's almost no debris left.
That's true They probably threw them over.
After all, these people did make their suicides look like the Kiri Tengu's doing.
Who knows what they were thinking.
Grandpa! Grandpa! Oh? Isn't she— The head priest's granddaughter, Kikuno-san.
Grandpa! Why did this happen?! "Ten'ei's Granddaughter Kikuno, 21 years old" Grandpa! Why did this happen?! She cried two years ago too, when she saw Priest Chunen's body Yes.
She used to visit on occasion back then, but she suddenly stopped coming after the incident Grandpa! Who's he? Kikuno-san's husband.
They married only a few days ago.
I hear he's the successor to a big temple and the two of them were arranged to be married since they were little.
I was really shocked when I heard that from the head priest two years ago.
I had always thought that she and Chunen-san were to be together.
The late Chunen-san? Yes.
The two were so close they seemed like real brother and sister.
It must have been a real shock to Chunen-san when he heard she was going to be married.
That's probably why he did that foolish thing Maybe the head priest had been worrying about that this whole time— and killed himself like Chunen-san mere days after Kikuno-san's wedding! That is a possibility If so, then there should be a will somewhere.
Then let's all split up and look for it! Suicide?! Are you so sure? No matter how much it looks like the old legend, would anybody really hang themselves from a place like that?! And would they really make such a big hole on purpose?! What if it wasn't a suicide and this big hole was used for some sort of trick This incident and the one two years ago were pulled off the same way.
Meaning Chunen and the head priest were murdered by the same person.
What are you doing, little boy? Shunen-san! Come to think of it, this guy said he came to this temple one year ago.
I doubt he could've made that big hole with these scrawny arms Say, you said you were up late last night reading a book, right? Yeah.
I was awake until a little past 3:00.
Did you notice anything strange during that time? Like anyone sneaking out of their room, or an eerie sound from something breaking, or anyone screaming?! No, I didn't hear anything.
Last night was a quiet night.
You really heard nothing? Nope.
The head priest's room is a little ways away, but everyone's sleeping quarters are next to each other, so we'd know right away if anything happened.
Don't tell me you're suspicious of everyone? Not really Hey, Shunen! Stop lounging around and help us look! Oh, right! Alright, just a little more! You freaked me out when you started to lose your grip there! Sorry 'bout that! Hey, officers! That's the window at the top of the room where the head priest died, right? Yeah You can't carry someone through here onto the middle beam? No, it'd be impossible without leaving marks on the beam Besides, it'd be crazy to carry someone in there and try to do things on top of something so narrow.
What's with this drainboard? The cut is warped! The rest are just fine, though Hey, little boy! But the cut is old.
It was made quite a long time ago.
There are cherry blossom petals stuck to the underside How? Conan-kun! Conan-kun! Where are you? Conan-kun! If you're looking for that boy, he asked how to get to the woods below the temple and then left.
The only things missing from the scene were the fragments from that broken wall! If the killer threw them over the side, they would have landed around here somewhere! If I can find them, I might figure out the reason the killer had to get rid of them! And then the mystery behind the killer's trick! Bingo! A piece of wood! This was part of that sliding panel There's tape on it What for? What are you doing down here?! Ran-neechan! What's with that dirty piece of wood?! Get rid of it! I can't! Alright! Let's call it a day! Yes, sir! Say, where's Kikuno-san? She went with the body to the police headquarters.
But we can't seem to find his will.
That's okay.
At least we know it was a suicide No! It was a murder! Something happened in this room last night! Something beyond imagination! The wall which was destroyed by an immense strength The warped cut on the drainboard And the dumped piece of wood from the wall and the tape that was stuck to it What is the key that connects them all? A cherry blossom? That's it! I've figured out the killer's trick! If that's the case, then the killer must've spent the entire night in this room Ah! So that's why he said that! He's the killer, no question about it! The impossible crime a work of foul art created at the scene of the crime by a murderer.
The piece of art exhibited this time was a room in a mountain temple where the cherry blossoms fall.
Someone murdered the temple's head priest by tying him to an elevated beam and then hanging him! Naturally, there were no marks of him being pulled up.
It seems utterly impossible for a human to commit this crime Yes, the killer utilized a certain technique to float in the air! Just like the adroit flying Kiri Tengu! Some unused rope and an axe lay on the floor of the room where the head priest was killed.
But the strangest thing of all was that although there was a huge hole in the wall, there was no debris from it.
Then there was the drainboard with the warped cut, and the piece of wood from the sliding panel and the tape that was on it What is the key that connects them all? A cherry blossom? That's it! I've figured out the killer's trick! If that's the case, then the killer must've spent the entire night in this room! Ah! So that's why he said that! He's the killer, no question about it! Please, Inspector Megure? Alright, alright.
I'll take you home in my patrol car.
I have to make them notice before everyone leaves Hand over the keys to the rental car that just happened to get a flat tire in the forest! I'll have one of my men return it for you.
We owe a great deal to your detective skills, after all.
Thanks a bunch! I got the keys! Get back here, kid! Damn it, where'd that brat go?! No drainboards! Oops, he slipped and knocked himself out Oh well.
Now I don't have to use the Anesthetic Watch Gun on him! This button acts as a tiny wireless speaker.
Whatever you say into your bow tie will come out of this.
I'll just stick this here Hey, little boy! Officer! You shouldn't come in here without permission.
Perfect timing! Mouri-san said he wants everyone to gather in the room where the incident happened! And do you have any tape? Tape? What? You know who did it?! Yes.
I know who killed the head priest and made it look like a suicide.
Hey, now.
The head priest died after he was tied to an elevated beam and hanged! If you're saying someone set that up, how in the world did they do it?! There were no marks on the beam of him being pulled up, you know! Of course there aren't any marks.
The killer floated directly up to the beam along with the head priest and then tied him to it! Floated up?! Don't tell me it was the Kiri Tengu No human could do anything like that Hear that sound? Yes, it's the waterfall.
Yes.
The waterfall that flows directly next to the top window Wouldn't it be possible to float to the ceiling if you diverted the waterfall through the window and filled the entire room with water? Fill this entire room with water? You have to be kidding me.
Both the killer and the victim would be sopping wet, but there were no signs of wetness on the body at all! An inflatable raft, Inspector.
An inflatable raft? Kan'nen-san.
You said there was an inflatable raft in the temple, correct? Yes.
If the body was in the raft and covered with a plastic sheet or something, then it could have made it to the top without getting wet.
But the waterfall and the window are too far apart! No matter how well things might fit, nobody could divert the water into the room The drainboard.
The killer covered the gaps in the drainboard with tape, flipped it over, and then redirected the waterfall through the window.
As proof of this, the cut on the drainboard is warped.
It was cut to make it short enough to fit And there are cherry blossom petals stuck to the board in the spots where the tape would have been The same petals that are carried down the waterfall from the trees at the top of the mountain.
And it wasn't just the drainboard that had flower petals stuck to it.
They should fall down to your feet soon, Inspector.
The petals that got stuck to the side of the wall when the killer removed the water, that is! In other words, after killing the head priest, the killer carried the body into this room, put it into the inflatable raft, covered the inner doorframe with tape, and temporarily left the room through the sliding panel.
Then the killer began filling the room with water from the second floor window using the method I just illustrated, quickly returned to the 1st floor, entered through the sliding panel, and then covered it with tape too.
Otherwise, the water would leak out through the panel.
After that, while taking great care not to get the body wet, all the killer had to do was wait for the room to fill up.
After the room filled up enough, the killer arrived at the beam, tied the corpse to it, and then escaped out the top window.
But how did the killer get rid of the water? By breaking the sliding panel with the axe that was left at the scene of the crime.
Yes.
This room's floor is about 4.
5 tatami in area and the walls are about 10 meters high, so its volume is 2.
7 meters by 2.
7 meters by 10 meters, or 72.
9 meters cubed.
The specific gravity of water is 1, so the weight of all the water in the filled room would be 72.
9 metric tons.
If you used an axe to break a panel at the bottom of a room with that much water, you know what would happen.
The cracked panel would fly out under 9.
8×10⁴ Pascals of pressure! Under the immense strength of the water, more and more of the wall would erode off, creating a gaping hole! A huge amount of power— like getting run over by a truck.
I see! So that's why there's no debris even though the hole is so big! Conan found a fragment of the wall in the woods below the temple.
He did? Here you go, Inspector! I see.
A piece of the sliding panel with tape on it.
But who in the world would do such a thing?! It would take less than 10 seconds for the water to exit the room, but filling the room, that's a whole different story.
The amount of water entering from the drainboard is 5 to 6 times as much as through a faucet.
If we estimate that it filled up 10 cubic meters per hour, it would take 7 hours to completely fill this room! The head priest's estimated time of death was between 10:00 PM and 12:00 AM last night.
Estimated Time of Death And it was 8:00 AM when his body was discovered.
Time of Body's Discovery Even if you deduct the time to set up the trick and the time needed to release the water and dry the room the killer must have been in this room between midnight and 6:00 AM! What does that have to do with the killer? Shunen-san.
You said you were reading a book in your room until 3:00 AM last night, correct? If so, then you too should've heard a certain someone scream when they saw the Tengu mask from the bathroom! Who screamed?! Answer me! Shunen Of course I heard Ran-san scream! It caught me by surprise! I can't blame her for being scared, though Shunen! Did you— Shunen-san.
It wasn't Ran who screamed.
It was me! But it's not your fault you didn't hear me.
You were in here all night, surrounded by the thunderous roar of the water, after all.
But his testimony won't hold as evidence, Mouri-kun! If it's undeniable proof that you want, then you're holding it right now, Inspector.
This piece of wood? By wiping the room off later, the killer could destroy the evidence, but he couldn't do that with that piece of wood since it went flying off.
Yes.
That is the only thing the killer failed to recover! I would bet my life as a detective that they're still on the tape stuck to that board Shunen-san.
I'm referring to your fingerprints! But Shunen came to this temple a year ago! If this is the same trick as the one two years ago, then the same person did it! Shunen couldn't have done it! The incident two years ago was probably the head priest's doing, using the exact same trick as this time.
The cut on the drainboard was old, and he was the one most afraid to talk about the incident.
And if my instincts are correct, the late Chunen-san and Shunen-san were probably brothers! It's true.
Chunen was my genuine blood brother.
It was only natural that no one realized it To hide my origin, I came as a priest-in-training after studying at a distantly-related temple first.
Naturally, my purpose for coming to this temple was to find out the truth behind my brother's death and find the real culprit! I scoured the temple for half a year.
I had the trick figured out, but I didn't know who did it.
Nobody wanted to talk about the incident, you see.
But I realized it when you came yesterday, Detective.
I knew once I saw the head priest's strange attitude! Afterwards, I went to his room and found him drinking his night sake.
When I pressed the issue, he told me about all sorts of things! He had no idea I was actually Chunen's younger brother! The reason he killed my brother was because he didn't want him to take his granddaughter Kikuno-san, who was to marry a successor to a big temple.
Kikuno-san and my brother supposedly even agreed to elope together, but that doesn't matter now Anyway, when I asked the head priest to give himself up, he— There's no evidence left from what happened two years ago anyway! Besides, this temple has gained prestige thanks to that incident! It's known as the temple where the Kiri Tengu appears! When he said that, I lost control of myself and strangled him to death with a belt in the room! Yes.
Just like he strangled my brother two years ago with him on my back, to leave marks to make it look like a hanging suicide With his corpse at my feet, I had no other choice.
I would have to use the same trick he used two years ago to hide the truth It's too bad you didn't visit this temple two years ago, Detective.
If you had, I would probably be Hikari to kage no roman (Keiko Utoku) roman katareba hitobanjuu The twilight would know no weariness If we talked about romance all night long tsukareshirazu no all night long There's no time to love, the waves are surging this way koi-suru hima mo nai yo nami ga oshiyosete-kuru kioku no naka o oyoide mo genjitsu wa cool and dry Even as I swim in my memories, reality is cool and dry sore o tashikametakute doko ni samayoi-yuku no Where will I wander to make sure of that love?
