Enlightenment, Part One

(DOCTOR WHO THEME) TURLOUGH: Check.
I said, "Check.
" -I heard you.
-Come on then.
In a minute.
-DOCTOR: Ah! -What? -Interesting, it isn't a leak.
-It must be.
We're losing power all the time.
No, our power's being tapped somehow.
-Tapped? What do you mean? -It's just draining away.
-I don't understand.
-He never does.
-I'm sure it's something quite simple.
-You're being very calm about it.
Your move.
WHITE GUARDIAN: Move, move, move.
-I'm sorry, did you say something? -No.
Just that it was Tegan's move.
Oh! Well, we'll block the outlet there.
For a while, we'll just have to run on reduced power.
WHITE GUARDIAN: Power, power, power.
-What's the matter? -Quiet.
I'm trying to listen to something.
-To what? -I'm not quite sure.
It must have been my imagination.
There is something going on.
That's it! Of course, a message.
Turn up the power.
Turn it up? We're suppose to be conserving it.
DOCTOR: Power.
WHITE GUARDIAN: Here, here, here.
We must increase energy output.
Now push that lever to full.
-Are you sure everything's all right? -Of course, now keep at full.
-Whatever happens.
-If we keep it at full, we'll lose power completely.
I suppose the Doctor must know what he's doing.
DOCTOR: Can you hear me? We're giving you more power.
You think so? -He's out there talking to himself.
-DOCTOR: Where are you? We're giving you everything we've got.
It is you, isn't it? Yes.
Good.
(INAUDIBLE) I can't hear you.
Power - at risk.
There is extreme danger.
I repeat Danger, danger, danger.
Keep it going.
He's gone mad.
What does he think he's doing? We're going to blow.
DOCTOR: Go on.
Galactic North, six degrees, nine, zero -TEGAN: Doctor! -Quiet! Keep back.
Stay in the console room.
-Nine, zero -Seven, seven.
Go immediately.
not allow.
What? Not allow what? (INAUDIBLE) Death, death, death.
You cannot succeed.
I control the game, the Doctor's destiny and soon he will be dead.
(LAUGHING EVILLY) What have you done? You've reduced the power.
We were about to blow up! Never ever disobey my instructions again.
I thought we were going to be killed.
And because of you many others might die.
(SIGHS) -Who were you talking to? -The White Guardian.
-TEGAN: White Guardian? Who's he? -I have no time to explain.
I have to sort out these coordinates.
-Where are we going? -I don't know.
I lost contact before I could get more information.
Well, what are we suppose to do when we get there? Prevent something happening.
Something dangerous.
TEGAN: What? -You don't know that, either.
-No.
But when the White Guardian senses danger, he's invariably right.
Now what's happening? Time override.
Locking must have been in the coordinates.
We're here.
The air is breathable.
You're going out there? Well, I have to find out what's going on.
Turlough, get a couple of torches.
-Make it three.
I'm coming with you.
-No.
I need you here.
Why does it have to be me? The White Guardian may try and make contact again.
Um I'll stay if you like? No, I need someone I can rely on.
It's important.
-Someone who doesn't run away.
-I explained what happened on Terminus.
-Save the arguing until later.
-What do I have to do? Operate this lever.
His power's badly depleted.
He's having to draw on ours to get through at all.
-The power drain is the White Guardian? -Yes, exactly.
Well, what did he say? Well apart from the coordinates, I could understand very little.
Shouldn't you wait.
He might try to make contact again.
-DOCTOR: No, there may not be time.
-But anything could be out there.
Yes, and going out is the only way to learn what it is.
Are you ready? Well, what if the White Guardian tells me something important? Thank him politely.
Won't be long.
Good luck.
Wood.
We're in a building.
(RAT SQUEAKS) Listen.
Rats.
A warehouse? Do you feel that? -Can't you feel it? The ground's moving.
-I don't think so.
-Look at this.
-A piece of rope.
Really? Look again.
-Tar.
-We're on a ship, a sailing ship.
The hold probably.
I thought there was suppose to be great danger.
I didn't know you were so keen to find it.
Down.
(TURLOUGH SIGHS) What was all that about? -Checking the stores.
-Did you see the expression on his face? Yes, almost as though he were hypnotised.
Still, at least he didn't find the TARDIS.
Come on.
White Guardian.
WHITE GUARDIAN: More, more, more.
(SIGHS) Come on, where are you? WHITE GUARDIAN: You, you, you.
Please hurry! Your demand for energy is causing an overload.
Quickly, the message! Must not win.
Tell the Doctor, winner takes all.
All All (EXPLODING) Who are you? The White Guardian? Who are you? (SHOUTING) Oh, no! (MEN TALKING) -TURLOUGH: Dead end? -No.
It's a door.
You ready? How do you do? Where are you? Are you hurt? Not bad.
-Are you insane? Let's get out of here.
-Gently, Turlough.
This one will do for me, you can take that one.
What do you think you're doing? Behaving as if we've just joined the crew.
Edwardian England.
-Oh, no.
We're on Earth again.
-So it seems.
First British submarine launched.
-Why don't they say something? -They're sizing us up.
Forecastle's fairly cramped.
It's important to know who you're sharing it with.
After all, we could be cooped up here together for months.
-You're not serious? -Only if we're both here for the trip.
Look, shouldn't we get back to the TARDIS while there's still a chance? No.
I must find out why the White Guardian wanted me to come here.
It was a mistake.
They may be a rough lot, but they hardly threaten the peace and harmony of the universe, do they? We stay.
(FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING) Where are you? (SIGHING) -Got your bunk sorted out, have you? -Yes, thanks.
-Jackson's the name.
-Turlough and I'm the Doctor.
Oh, you are, are you? Well, it's about time.
Hey, he's here, lads.
The Doctor's aboard.
(ALL CHEERING) You've been expecting me? More than expecting you, slush, we've been waiting for you.
(FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING) Where you been, eh? I mean, we've been living on nothing but hardtack since we've come aboard, -haven't we, lads? -ALL: Yeah.
Right.
Give us some proper food.
That's what we want.
Yeah.
None of your stinking, greasy messes either.
-Right.
-Not like that last cook we had, eh? The doctor, of course.
The ship's cook.
(LAUGHING) -Hello.
-Fascinating.
-What? -Who are you? -A stowaway? -No, I can explain Yes.
You're a stowaway.
And I shall put you in irons.
MARRINER: Where are you? Where are you? Uh, may I? Yeah, I'm tired of reading it.
Yeah, you can have it.
It's two days old, though.
-How's the world up top? -Have you been below decks for two days? Yeah, we've been battened under hatches since we've came aboard, haven't we, lads? ALL: Yeah.
MARRINER: Where are you? Here, meet the lads.
Farley, Wade, Jenkins, Grogan.
And that one's Collier.
DOCTOR: How do you do? Did you all come aboard at the same time? -Don't know.
-Can't remember.
-Why'd you ask? -DOCTOR: Curious.
Truth of the matter is, we don't rightly remember.
(CHUCKLING) Probably drank too much.
ALL: (LAUGHING) Yeah.
Celebrating your last night ashore.
Yeah, but he don't drink.
No, I signed a pledge.
I ain't touched a drop since, but I don't remember nothing neither.
And you're quite sure, not one of you can remember coming aboard? MAN 1: No.
MAN 2: Don't seem like.
No.
Blank.
The whole thing.
Blank.
Allow me.
That isn't possible.
Who are you? SurelySurely you must find it rather strange -that none of you can recall signing on? -No, we remember that all right.
Oh, yeah.
I mean we signed on a board, didn't we, lads? COLLIER: Yeah.
DOCTOR: All right.
-And we got a month's wages in advance.
-ALL: (LAUGH) Yeah.
Won't likely forget that now, would we? Now, that's one thing I'll say for the captain.
I mean, he certainly ain't mean.
Yeah, but he stands to make a packet, I dare say, if we win.
-And we will.
-Win what? The race, lad, the race.
-Why are you frightened? -Isn't it obvious? I'm not going to hurt you.
I want to please you.
Would you like me to find your friends for you? -What friends? -The two you're looking for.
Where are they? What have you done with them? Nothing.
I haven't met them yet.
I could take you to them, if that's what you'd like.
-Yes.
That's what I'd like.
-This way.
Please? You won't try to run away again, will you? Please? You see, I find you fascinating.
Quite fascinating.
Oh, that was a race now.
Regular flier, she was, the old America.
-A flier? -Yeah.
Crossed the Atlantic in 17 days, she did.
Hardly a flying ship.
-Slim bows.
-No, no.
You give me a ship that's bluff in the bow and narrow in the stern.
Oh, yeah.
Or a woman, cod head and mackerel tail.
(ALL LAUGHING) None of your flying ships.
You been at the bottle, have you, lad? Little bit of Dutch courage, eh? Now that's no good for a greenhand.
That's right.
And it's no good for us older hands either.
Now you got to keep a clear head if you're going up there.
Yeah.
And strong arms.
Otherwise, you're down on the deck from the height of the crosstree.
Splat! Keep hold of those shrouds, and make certain you get the lifeline under your feet.
You use your eyes and check that rigging before you go up there.
Here, know why a pig can never become a sailor? 'Cause he can't look aloft.
(ALL LAUGHING) Looks like you're wanted.
You know where the TARDIS is if things get difficult.
-Where have they taken him? -Poop quarters.
Yeah, the first mate will want to see him, I dare say.
Maybe the captain even.
Living like lords, they are back there.
Every luxury.
Yeah, while we have to make do with salt, junk and hardtack.
-He'll be all right? -Who can tell? (DOOR OPENS) -Doctor? -What are you doing here? Don't ask.
I was so stupid.
You're unharmed? Did the White Guardian make contact again? It was very confused.
Well, tell me everything you can remember.
Well, he was insistent somebody or something must not win the race.
"Tell the Doctor", he said.
"Winner takes all.
" -Well, is that it? -The console blew up.
It's not much help, is it? (SIGHS) Well, you did your best.
The message doesn't make sense, "Winner takes all.
" May do.
Especially as we're on a racing yacht.
-How do you know? -We've been talking to the crew.
I hope they're not as peculiar as the officers.
(WHISTLE SOUNDING) The one I've met is very strange.
Welcome aboard.
Delighted you could join us.
Captain Striker at your service.
-How do you do? I'm the -The Doctor and Miss Tegan.
Allow me to present my fellow officers.
-Ah, they're a funny lot, if you ask me.
-The afterguard always are.
What do you mean, a funny lot? Well, they keep themselves to themselves.
COLLIER: Nobody's hardly set eyes on the captain yet, -not even the boatswain.
-Yeah, he's right.
Takes most of his orders from the first mate.
It was the first mate when we signed on, remember? -Did he say where the ship's going? -I don't remember.
We're here for the race.
I mean, that's all that matters.
Yes, but where are we racing to? Where's the finish? We'll find out soon enough.
(WHISTLE SOUNDING) There she blows.
That's what we've been waiting for.
The wind's beginning to freshen.
Please.
I hope it's not going to be too rough.
I'm not a very good sailor.
You have a brave heart, Tegan.
It's not my heart I'm worried about, Doctor.
There is no cause for concern, Miss Tegan.
We have the perfect antidote for mal de mer.
Thank you.
(WHISTLE SOUNDING) -Breaking out the rum rations, sir.
-Good.
Well, here's to an eventful passage, gentlemen and a stormy one.
My first mate Mr Marriner you've met, I believe, Miss Tegan, the Doctor.
Mr Marriner is my right-hand man.
He deals with the crew.
-Everything in order? -Yes, sir.
They're being prepared.
Good.
I must apologise for this rather abrupt end to dinner.
-Look after the lady.
-Sir.
-Allow me.
-Where are we going? -The wheelhouse.
-Doctor? Hmm.
(CLEARS THROAT) (WHISTLE SOUNDING) See you later, lad.
-What's going on? -That's grog ration.
Good, lad.
You're taking my advice, I see.
-What do you mean? -Well, keeping a clear head.
Now don't you worry.
I'll look after you.
Are you all right, then? -Where to? -Up aloft.
Come on! (WHISTLE SOUNDING) -Come on, lad.
-I'll catch you up.
(SIGHS) You're not going with them? (CHUCKLES) No, thanks.
They're going aloft.
The rigging's no place for a coward like me.
DOCTOR: Hmm.
-Now where? -To find Tegan, if your courage is up to it.
She's on the way to the wheelhouse.
Don't ask me why she left the TARDIS.
Did you manage to find out anything about the race? Well, the crew don't know anything.
-Can't we go back to the TARDIS? -Yes, when we've found Tegan.
(SIGHS) (MAN SCREAMING) -What was that? -One of the crew going aloft.
It sometimes affects them that way, especially when it's the first time.
First time? You mean you send completely inexperienced crewmen aloft in a race? They soon get used to it.
Now, wait a minute.
Wetsuits? What are wetsuits doing on an Edwardian sailing ship? This way.
-It's dark outside.
-Isn't it always dark? It was that I expected it to be daylight.
-Mr Mate? -Excuse me.
-Sir.
-Are you all right? Of course.
Did you see what was in one of the companion ways? -What? -Underwater gear.
-Like scuba divers wear.
-Maybe this will tell us where we are.
TURLOUGH: Well, it doesn't make a lot of sense.
TEGAN: It looks like the position of marker buoys.
Oh, they're considerably more than that.
Mr Mate, we will look at our competitors, please.
Aye, aye, sir.
(BLEEPING) Electronics? On an Edwardian racing yacht? Look at the screen.
We're not on a yacht, we're on a ship.
A spaceship.
