Doubters to Believers Liverpool FC: Klopp's Era (2025) s01e03 Episode Script
The Kids are Alright
1
[dog playing]
[Harvey Elliott]
See, this is all he does, Paisley.
He just runs down the line.
[commentator] With his players walking
dutifully behind him,
Bob goes out
to collect his last big trophy.
It's Paisley's 6th League Championship.
[Scott Elliott] Greatest manager
in Liverpool history… Bob Paisley.
[chanting echoes in the stadium]
So I had to, er, name him Bob.
Well, Paisley.
But everyone calls him Bob to be fair,
for a nickname.
My whole life's always revolved
around Liverpool.
[commentator]
Oh, there's Rush in there. Rush! Goal!
[the fans go wild]
[Scott]
My birthday was the same day as Ian Rush.
So that swayed me to support Liverpool.
'87 - '88 season, me and my friend,
we were in the Kop and Liverpool scored
at the Annie road end.
[the fans go wild]
And we just got separated,
it was absolute mayhem.
From there, I just,
you know, I just fell in love with it.
Yeah, I had to have it, auction.
Sold when, er…
…when Melwood done the auction
to get rid of loads of bits.
[Elliott] I didn't know
you was gonna get it.
[Scott] You didn't know. I saw it,
and thought, 'I've gotta have that.
I've gotta have that in my house'.
This is probably the most emotional…
-[Elliott chuckles]
-…most wonderful experience
of your journey so far.
We had just signed for Liverpool
and after we had, erm-- well, you had
just signed for Liverpool, not 'we'.
[laughs]
But, erm…
as we were driving back
after sort of meeting Jürgen,
Harvey grabbed my arm on the motorway,
and said 'We did it together'.
And we both burst out crying, didn't we?
Then we pulled over on the hard shoulder
and we just had this embracing hug
for about a minute.
And Harvey presented me with a shirt.
It was like, yeah,
my favourite ever moment.
[Elliott] I think every part's for my dad.
I'm kind of livin' his dream.
So…
you know, as much as possible,
I try and live it with him.
You were three, when I took him
to Anfield for the first time.
-[Elliott] Yeah,
-So, I remember, you were in the park
opposite the Kop on my shoulders,
and you was singing old songs
with the fans.
Yeah, for me it's…
it's just been all my life.
[Scott] You've gotta have dreams in life.
I think, everyone has to have a dream.
And when it comes true it's, er…
it's amazin'.
[crowd cheering]
[reporter] And the draw for the last 16
of the Europa League is getting underway
at UEFA HQ in Switzerland.
Brighton, Liverpool, Rangers,
and West Ham are waiting
to find out who they will face…
[broadcaster 1] Liverpool go into this
and whoever we end up getting today,
we should go in
as overwhelming favourites.
[broadcaster 2] They're a dangerous team.
Really, really dangerous team, Liverpool.
They're gonna go close.
They're gonna go close
to all four this season.
[caller 1] What a way to end it,
by maybe winning the Carabao Cup Final,
and winnin' the Europa League.
[caller 2] He's gonna have to play
the young kids.
What have we got to lose?
If they're good enough,
they're old enough to play.
[Klopp] It's fine.
[announcer] …Liverpool FC,
[overlapping muffled dialogue]
-[Klopp] Let's hope for Germany, Freiburg.
-Freiburg, yeah.
We cannot get, er…
Brighton or West Ham, no?
No.
Pep!?
[Klopp] No, you only can get
a team which played last night.
-Yeah, exactly. [Pep laughs]
-But you make it-- keep it simple for you.
[Pep laughing] Thank you.
[announcer] Among the winners
of the knock-out playoffs
unseeded teams, we have SC Freiburg,
Olympique de Marseille, AC Sparta Praha…
[Jürgen puffs a sigh]
[overlapping chatter]
Honestly, the…
the teams are really good there.
OK, not to Qarabağ.
That's too long a flight.
-[man] Here we go.
-[nervous jitter in the background]
Sparta Praha will play… Liverpool.
-I say!
-[man] To Prague.
-[Klopp] Prague.
-[enthusiastically] I say.
-OK. How long is a flight to Prague?
-[John Achterberg] About two and a half.
-Two and a half.
-[Klopp] That's alright.
I've never been to Prague.
-Never.
-Well, we were there a week.
-For the wrong reasons.
-[laughter]
[Klopp] Dealing with this…
amount of games
Relief.
Preparation.
Relief-preparation,
or frustration-preparation.
The overriding feeling after a game is
the next game is coming.
[distant cheering in the stadium]
[commentator 1] Alexis Mac Allister
thought he was going to take it,
now Darwin Núñez is gonna take it.
[commentator 2]
Can Darwin be deadly from 12 yards?
[commentator 3]
Darwin Núñez runs up. Right foot.
Hits the post!
[radio host]
Darwin Núñez, is he good or bad?
-Josh is a Liverpool fan. Hello, Joshua.
-[Joshua] He's a fantastic footballer,
but he can't put the easy chances away.
[commentator] Núñez! Hits the bar again.
[Pep]
In the season, with social media now,
with how the world is,
these players, they go through moments
when it's like the whole world has
an opinion and it comes all to you.
[caller]
He does need to be more clinical…
… you look at some of these chances
and you're like,
'Come on, mate.
Put it in the back of the net'.
[commentator] What a-- Oh, it's not!
Darwin Núñez can't believe it.
For players nowadays, that's really…
It's really important,
that cannot take the confidence away,
but you need good people around you
where… the outside world doesn't matter.
You come in and it's just about us,
about the colleagues, about…
[sighing] about… the family, yeah.
[Pep in Portuguese] Let's have
a look again at how things are going.
So, you're the best in Europe
in terms of assists and goals combined.
You've got 23 from 36 games played.
The thing is, you've got both aspects.
Some players are just about scoring,
but you're becoming more
and more of an assist-provider,
but I think you've still got
so much more to offer.
[Núñez in Spanish] Yes, obviously,
a striker always lives by goals.
But the most important thing for me
is to help the team,
because they're going to need me
and I'm going to need them.
[Pep in Portuguese] You've got to train
your hardest and not get frustrated.
Remember, you're helping the team
and that's why you're in the team.
To press, counter-pressing.
You're doing great, mate. Let's go.
-Now, rest.
-Thank you.
-Nice one.
-[Núñez] See you, mate.
-See you later, have fun.
-See you.
[Pep in English]
It's about dealing with mistakes, no?
And growing from there.
I think, these meetings only make sense
when the players really want to learn.
[players shouting]
[coach] Good.
[Klopp] It's our interest
to help the boys as much as we can.
The moment
when you enter the training ground…
this is your safe place.
You leave the problems you have outside.
Yes, we have to train.
Yes, I have to do well. But…
the gaffer thinks…
I'm good enough.
So, I probably am.
And that's what I tell the boys.
If I tell you, you're good…
you are good, because I saw of you.
[muffled voices on the pitch]
[fans chanting from inside the stadium]
Match scarf for the game, lads?
[commentator] Good evening, everybody.
It's always an absolute privilege,
and a pleasure to be at Anfield,
as Liverpool hosting Sparta Praha.
in the last 16 of the Europa League.
Five one up of course
from last week's first leg.
The Reds one step away
from tomorrow's quarter final draw.
[Scott] Wow.
Gets me every time. Look at this.
Especially, an evening game.
Floodlights, the green grass,
it's just unbelievable.
You just step up, and the excitement…
It's like you're a little kid again.
It's what it's like.
It's just… it's just amazin'.
[fans singing and chanting]
[commentator] This is Dominik Szoboszlai.
His ball is for Darwin Núñez!
[cheering] Yes!
You have to be ready in life,
and you have to be ready in football,
and things will be difficult.
Only the… the guys who really live up to…
the professionalism will survive,
and you need to enjoy
the fact that you are representing
the best club in the world.
[commentator] I think, we're gonna see
some substitutions, by the way,
for the second half.
Harvey Elliott's gonna come on
for the second half. He's ready.
He's with Pep Lijnders
right by the dugout.
My main goal is to break into the team,
and to be a star at this club.
I didn't think
he was gonna come on so soon.
[Scott] I'm surprised
they're playin' him left wing.
I suppose that's the advantage to him.
He can play in five different positions.
[Elliott] It's all down to my dad, really.
As long as I work as hard as I can
and leave everything on the pitch,
then that's all he asks for really.
Whatever else comes of it,
you know, is a bonus, but…
he expects a lot from me
which is, you know, why I'm here and…
why I'm… the player who I am.
[fans chanting]
It's not gonna be a easy road,
but that's just what I wanna do.
I wanna achieve everything at this club.
[Scott] Ooh, here we go.
[fans chanting]
-[the fans go wild]
-Yeah!
Yes!
Yes, you beauty!
Get in there, lad.
[female fan screaming in the background]
-[Scott] Has someone else touched it?
-I don't know.
I dunno if someone's touched it.
Oh, it did.
It hit Gakpo and gone in.
It was goin'--
he tried to get out the way.
That would'a gone in as well.
[commentator] What a night.
Liverpool 6 - Sparta Praha 1.
[Elliott]
Making my family proud is the main thing.
But making myself proud,
and making the city proud.
When you come off the pitch,
you can say, 'Yeah, I left it all there'.
[cheers gain momentum]
[chanting] Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah.
[commentator] It's over. It's over.
And Real Madrid have won
their third consecutive
UEFA Champions League.
What a night in Kiev.
[Lallana] How Jürgen spoke at the end
of the Champions League Final,
you know, with so much optimism
and so much belief in-- in-- in the group,
and I think the confidence
of getting to the Champions League Final,
that gives you inner belief.
[exhilarating music playing]
[commentator] In search of our dreams,
in search of silverware.
Welcome to Liverpool Football Club's
2018-2019 season.
There is, quite rightly,
the sense of optimism around Anfield.
[tense music playing]
[fans cheering]
[commentator] What a strike by Sadio Mané.
[tense music continuing]
It's Roberto Firmino for Liverpool…
If you talk about the front three…
er, in the last ten years in England,
you have to name them Sadio, Bobby and Mo.
Erm, the amount of times Jürgen said…
'And from left to right Sadio, Bobby, Mo'.
[chuckles]
[commentator] Goal!
You know, we were
just dismantling most teams, really.
[commentator] He's on for
a hat-trick here, is Mohamed Salah.
[fans go wild]
[commentator] You just knew
what the end result was going to be.
The squad was…
as strong as it had ever been, I think.
We were just a winnin' machine
at that point.
[fans chanting]
[commentator] The 232nd Merseyside Derby.
Liverpool 0 - Everton 0.
Four minutes here to be added.
That Everton match was--
it was a massive match.
It was still 0-0, and we were
absolutely desperate for a winner.
It was the 96th minute
and we got a short free kick.
Alisson's comin', like,
running up, tapped it to Trent.
Trent's banged it in the box.
It was gonna hit the bar, or somethin'.
I can't remember what Pickford's done,
but then it's-- it's just fell to…
to Divock, and Divock's popped it in
with his head.
[commentator] Unbelievable!
Divock Origi
has won the derby for Liverpool.
Jürgen Klopp can't believe it.
[Lallana]
I remember lookin' at Divock thinkin',
I'm not sure you know the score,
'cos I think he thought he equalised.
I remember sayin' to him after,
I went, 'You wasn't sure that was…
what the score was, were you?'
Divock was a little bit like that.
At times he was away with the fairies.
[commentator]
Firmino, oh, that's absolutely wonderful.
[Lallana] We reached the halfway point
of the season, still unbeaten,
and were seven points clear at the top
of the Premier League.
We knew we were goin' for the league,
'cos we were the real deal.
[Klopp]
How can you not be positive about us?
But you are the first,
if you drop three points
the next headline is
'Are they nervous now?'
So that's an easy job.
I would love to be in your situation.
Still earn the money I earn,
but be in your situation.
[laughter]
[gentle music playing]
[man] They're immense
at the moment, Liverpool.
[woman]
It's been a great start for Liverpool,
and, ultimately,
they're in the driving seat.
[man 2] It feels like
everybody thinks the squad's boss
and we can win the league,
if everything goes right.
[Raphael Honigstein]
Half way through the season
Liverpool are seven points clear.
People are beginning to think,
and dream could this be the one year
in nearly 30,
when Liverpool can win the Premier League?
[emotive music playing]
Unfortunately…
…they came up against Manchester City,
who were even more brilliant.
[uneasy music playing]
[Guardiola] He sure has been
the biggest, biggest rival in my career.
At first, because we face each other
a thousand million times
in Germany and here in England,
especially.
[commentator] Two managers en vogue
at the moment playing attacking football
which has made the methods
of other managers appear dated.
The high pressing, and, er,
intensity all the time.
Always doin' quick, quick, quick, quick.
And don't let you breathe.
Since first facing off in 2013
in Bundesliga,
Klopp against Guardiola has grown
into one of the greatest rivalries
in football.
Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp,
we are really different.
I'm not a genius,
but I can fire up a few people.
I have a clear idea
about the football I love.
And Pep's control
and these kinds of things,
so it's really a fire and water, and…
sometimes water wins
and sometimes fire wins.
[dramatic music playing]
[broadcaster]
We're talkin' about six pointers.
This is a huge game,
but Liverpool are there on merit.
If they were to win that game,
I don't think they can be caught.
[commentator]
Manchester City looking to close the gap
at the top of the table.
[starting whistle blows]
[cheering]
[tense music playing]
We knew it for a long time.
A win, or we are out.
A win, or we are out
[fans exclaiming]
[fans shouting]
[commentator] Lovely turn by Salah.
And goes again…
and threads the ball through.
[music jolts, continues]
[excitedly]
And Mané's in and sco--oh, he doesn't.
It might still go in.
[music intensifies]
[music fades to still]
[commentator] Unbelievable,
that it's not gone over the line.
-That is a hair.
-[tense music reverberates]
[fans cheering]
[man] But for Manchester City,
if they win the game,
suddenly it's blown wide open again.
[commentator] Bernardo Silva, Agüero
in front of his man-- Oh, what a finish.
He always scores against Liverpool here,
and he's done it again has Sergio Agüero.
[tense music reverberates]
Now Alexander-Arnold
side to side from Liverpool.
What can they find at the end of it?
Oh, man round the back is Robertson!
And in by Firmino!
Brilliant Liverpool goal.
They have carved Manchester City
wide open.
[fans cheering]
And here's Sané… goal. No, it is.
And now Liverpool have to dig deep again.
Henderson…
lookin' in behind Stones… Salah!
Oh, Ederson's got a hand on that,
has he?
So close for Mohamed Salah.
[tense music lingers]
-[whistle blows]
-[fans go wild]
And that will do.
It's a big win for Pep Guardiola
and Manchester City.
[Carragher] I think, after
Manchester City beat Liverpool at home,
in one of the greatest
Premier League games I've ever seen.
The quality
was just absolutely outstandin'.
But there was a feelin',
I think, if you're Manchester City,
we can claw this back.
When I beat him, I love it.
I sleep perfectly afterwards.
[man] Actually, if I was Manchester City,
if I was the manager, Pep,
you'd be sort of rubbin'
your hands together now, sayin'…
'Game on, now'.
[gentle piano music playing]
We drove home,
and we didn't talk for a long time
about that-- about the game.
When we finally started talking
about what happened on the afternoon,
it was like… Jürgen wouldn't have anything
like whinging about the dropped points.
It was always, like,
if we keep it together,
you know, the other teams will stumble,
as well. We just have to keep it together.
As a manager,
who's 100% focused on the job,
when you see him in interviews,
he's switched on.
From mile, to mile, to mile, towards home,
the role of being the manager
of Liverpool dropped off, you know?
The more-- the closer we got home,
the more he was…
'Jürgen, the normal one'.
And when we were back home,
he was completely Jürgen,
and not the manager.
[reporters talking among themselves]
[reporter] Feels like there's so much
surroundin' this game, though,
as well, 'cos…
you speak about
yourself facin' Pep potentially
for the last time.
Obviously,
in the context of the title race,
it's a big game as well.
It's probably the game
of the weekend, and of Sunday,
and, erm, so that's being… being able to…
to be part of that is… is… is massive.
[fans singing in the distance]
[fan]
I'm nervous, you know? I'm quite nervous.
More nervous than I've been
for most City games we've had.
[commentator] Wonderful situation
at the top of the table.
This is a heavyweight contest
in every sense of the word
in football terms.
In a game that is essential to both teams.
[Van Dijk talking]
Together, together, guys.
[Van Dijk] It's our day, boys, ay?
Our day.
[man] Good luck to you.
[Van Dijk] Be sure
that from the first second to the last…
Our day. Our opportunity.
-[man] Thank you.
-[Van Dijk] Be ready for this.
[fans singing]
Go on, boys. Let's go.
[fans singing, chanting]
[commentator] The crowd know
they have a massive role to play
in this one here today.
It's Mac Allister.
Endō, lovely switch. Lovely.
Mac Allister. Núñez is in…
…big chance…
Yes-- It's offside.
-Oh, he's given offside…
-[confused commentators overlapping]
[tense music playing]
…De Bruyne went low…
and Stones scores…
off the near post.
[Van Dijk] We are winners.
We're not gonna give up
until the last second of the game.
[commentator]
Elliott. Again, it's so tight.
And there's a ball for Haaland,
who's got a run on one on one
with Virgil van Dijk.
It was managed well.
If you're gonna give up when
you're havin' a difficult time, then…
you're not a real winner in my opinion.
[commentator] That's the last kick
of the half by Dominik Szoboszlai,
testing Ederson.
[commentator 2] …you know,
you've gotta see the… take a draw,
but if you're going to win the league,
you have to win with the home advantage.
[commentator 1] A space on the right
looking for Conor Bradley
Aké with the back pass…
Oh, Núñez will chase.
[in disbelief] Oh, penalty!
Ederson with the foul on Darwin Núñez.
[uproar from the fans]
-This is a huge moment in this game here.
-[whistle blows]
Anfield holds its collective breath.
[suspenseful music pulsing slowly]
[the fans go wild, cheering]
[chanting]
There's Walker…
He's beaten them. Brilliant by Díaz.
Díaz has beaten them. Still Díaz.
Brilliant. He's turned Walker inside out.
Corner. Brilliant by Díaz.
There's plenty of opportunities
now in this second half.
Liverpool break now. Great run by Díaz…
He's got Núñez in. He's got Szoboszlai.
Núñez… reverse… Díaz…
[disappointed cries]
Díaz in the middle…
…Salah, what a pass…
-Díaz is through on goal! Misses.
-[agonising cries from the commentator]
-Oh, no!
-What an opportunity again.
-[final whistle blows]
-And that is that.
So it finishes 1 - 1 here at Anfield.
[melancholy music playing]
[Klopp] Exceptional football game, wow.
Wow, really, whoa.
-For me, they proved today the first time.
-[melancholy music continuing]
100% yes.
We are exactly where we should be
in that position in that area,
and we will fight for it.
[reporter] If this is the last time
that you manage against Jürgen Klopp,
it may not be, uh, would you miss him?
He made us better team.
He made a-- made me better manager.
And I wish him,
from the bottom of my heart,
he will be back soon.
[reporter] It's a fascinating period
for Liverpool, and for Jürgen Klopp,
and that pursuit
of the quadruple continues.
The big games coming thick and fast.
[Raphael] Trusting young players
has always been a cornerstone
of Jürgen Klopp's coaching philosophy.
He likes to bring through those youngsters
and most importantly,
he trusts them to deliver.
[Carragher]
It's not easy comin' through at Liverpool.
It's one of the biggest clubs in the world
with some of the best players
in the world.
So you need a manager who's got belief
in your academy system
who's also brave enough,
and got the courage
to put these young lads in.
[Klopp]
Imagine the physicality of a 22-year-old.
And the game understanding
of a 35-year-old.
[scoffs] That's a player.
From young,
it's probably the same as it is now.
You see all players in front,
and think, 'I wanna get in front of them'.
And other kids come in, you're thinkin',
'I wanna outperform them.'
to show them, you don't need more kids,
you've got the one here.
Can anyone see my car over there?
[excited commotion among the kids]
[Danns] From young,
you're playing for the contract.
You wanna sign for Liverpool as a kid.
You wanna go to the team
that you support the most.
[coach] Right, who wants to play football
with the first team?
[all shouting] Me.
I've supported the club me whole life.
Literally, from birth
I've been put into it. Me dad was a Red.
-Me grandad's a Red.
-[laughter]
When I was younger, erm,
I used to get messages to--
if you wanna be a ball boy
and I was always first to that message,
erm…
So, I used to sing me lungs off,
basically,
on the Kop End,
so when I scored and ran into the crowd,
it was a surreal moment.
[fans cheering]
[indistinct chatter]
[kids clapping, whistling]
[Danns] It was all fun, as you're younger.
And then as you grow up,
you start seein' your friends get released
and you think, yeah, this is real.
Like, I'm not playin' just to play.
I'm playin' for somethin' more.
[photographer] Everybody like this, boys.
-One, two, three, cheese.
-[all] Cheese.
[emotive music playing]
[Scott]
Just lookin' at stuff.
These are things
I'll go through with Harvey.
We'll look back
at some highlights of each game
and think what he could do better,
what he's done well.
[interviewer] Does he listen to you?
Always. He never argues.
He's got his own opinion.
And we talk about things like that, but,
generally, he knows I'm pretty spot on.
And he-- he'll accept that good or bad,
you know?
There's praise and criticism,
but you have to be able to handle both.
[Elliott] When I was a young kid,
we played, er, Tottenham,
and it was either 9 - 1 or 10 - 1,
and I remember scoring nine.
Erm, but…
the goal we conceded was my fault.
Went back to the car
and my dad was waitin' in the car for me.
I remember he had a…
a look of thunder on his face
and was, like, the goal you conceded
was, you know, your fault.
It just sums him up.
You know, he always wants the best for me.
He always wants more
and if there's something I've done wrong,
he's told me.
From a young age
when he was making mistakes,
I was on his case constantly.
I always said to him, 'Anyone can handle
an arm round the shoulder,
but not many people can handle
a rollocking or a telling off
in front of people, right?'
So, he can handle that.
[music pulsating slowly]
Liverpool's pursuit
of silverware's relentless.
They're still in the hunt
for the Premier League
and they're going after all three cups.
But whilst Manchester City have been
the strongest opponent
in recent years for Liverpool,
the historic rivalry with Man United
will always be much bigger.
[fan]
I mean, it's a proper rivalry, isn't it?
You can… see that outside.
I think, this game takes on
a little bit more importance
for the Manchester United fans as well.
Their only thing to look forward
to this season is the FA Cup, isn't it?
[Jan] Right, come on, Fran.
Get your regalia on. Let's go.
-We've already been insulted.
-We've already had… already been insulted.
And called thievin' you-know-whats.
We're just two old women
and we don't want all that mither.
We don't want all that trouble.
We've not come for trouble.
-I think he's goin' to pick a strong team.
-A mixture.
Er, and, er, there'll be some youngsters
on the bench that he can probably call on.
I think, the young lads,
er, they've got a confidence now.
They're young, aren't they?
There's no fear. Yeah.
And they've got a confidence now,
cos he's had 'em in for quite a number
of games 'cos he's had to.
We expect,
they're gonna come away with a win
and another trip down to Wembley, Jan.
-Yeah.
-They're only there really, aren't they?
-We know where we're going.
-[conversation trails off]
[commentator]
That performance against Manchester City,
if they get anywhere near that today,
then they'll steamroll Manchester United.
[commentator 2] When you're goin'
for four trophies, it's a huge ask.
[broadcaster] Maybe, it's written
in the stars. I don't know.
But I expect 'em to get…
really deep in all the competitions.
[Fran] Honestly…
when you're nurses for 40 odd years,
you've got bad backs.
So standin' up this long, at this age,
it does us in.
[commentator] Manchester United
and Liverpool, the two biggest teams
in world football,
who need to be at it,
right from the start.
-[crowd noise]
-[commentator] Rashford cutting inside.
He's slipped it in, Garnacho, who's free!
-Brilliant save by Kelleher.
-[the fans go wild]
But McTominay scores
for Manchester United.
Wake up, fuck's sake.
[commentator] Past Fernandez,
runs past Rashford.
What a run, Quansah goin' all the way.
Into Núñez to Mac Allister!
[the stadium erupts]
It comes to Díaz in the box.
He's got defenders surroundin'…
Núñez left foot. Onto his right.
Great save.
[music plays slowly]
-Salah, must be…
-[commentator 2] Yes!
[commentator 1] Liverpool scores!
Liverpool lead!
They've turned this cup tie around.
Two goals at the end of the half.
[crowd chanting]
[whistle blows]
Three in the box.
Elliott, on his left leg.
Shot deflected.
Spins over the top for a corner kick.
-Great turn-- Shoot! Good save.
-[commentator 2] Oh, my goodness.
What a save.
Third goal now.
That's all we need. We're on top of 'em.
We're all over 'em.
[commentator] Five left of stoppage time.
Switch by Antony,
Garnacho running at Bradley in the area.
Chance here. Elliott blocks him.
-Antony…
-[music swirls]
-[cheering]
-It's in!
-[commentator 2] Oh, no.
-It's 2 - 2.
Unbelievable.
Chance, after chance, after chance.
[announcement over PA]
[full-time whistle]
[commentator 2] Liverpool will rue
the time when they were so much on top
but they just couldn't
take advantage from it.
We're gonna have another 30 minutes.
I'm nervous.
I'm… I'm shakin'.
I'm worried, in a way,
that we bought that on ourself,
because we should'a finished
that game off in the second half.
Easily.
[stadium clamour]
[commentator] Bradley…
it's a fortuitous bounce.
A space for Harvey Elliott
from distance, a deflection and in.
[cheering]
He's come of age here again tonight.
At Old Trafford, a big goal…
Núñez has come very deep
and they have nothing to hit.
They're in trouble here
as McTominay collects.
Rashford.
-[cheering]
-Doesn't miss that one.
Liverpool caught hopelessly out of shape.
-I don't want peno's, Fran. Come on.
-[Fran] Honestly, it's all the time.
-We're gonna get the next goal and win.
-Come on. Let's go.
[commentator] In it goes. Good delivery,
McTominay heads it clear.
-Endō leaves it… Elliott makes a mistake!
-Oh, no.
And Garnacho is breakin' for United.
-[comm 2] Drop… drop.
-There's a chance for United here.
Get back, get back!
[Elliott] It's kind of we're not allowed
to lose. We need to win. Otherwise…
You know, it's simply not good enough.
You know, every time we do lose,
I don't think I speak to anyone for--
for a day, to be honest.
[emotive music playing]
[fans going wild in the stadium]
Oh, for fuck's sake.
You can be angry with yourself,
you can be frustrated with yourself,
but it gets to a point where
there's only so long you can be like that.
It's a learnin' curve, you know,
you've made it, you can't change it.
The only thing you can do now
is not make the same one again.
[commentator]
But Liverpool caught from a corner.
Endō and Elliott leave it for each other.
Whoa, dear me.
I'm absolutely pissed off
with this bloody game.
I really am, Jan.
We've just give it to 'em.
Honestly.
[commentator] The referee is gonna bring
an end to the game.
It's Shankly who said
playing on this level
should not be pressure,
it should be a reward.
Because when you were young,
you wanted to play in these stadiums.
[commentator]
One of the all-time great FA Cup ties,
Manchester United into the semi-finals
saw them beat Liverpool 4 - 3
and end their great rivals' hopes
of a quadruple.
[Pep] Football's a game of mistakes.
I believe the team who make more mistakes
is the team who will win in the end.
[Jan]
Right, come on, Fran. Cup of tea for me.
[Fran] Cup of tea, yeah.
[man] Liverpool fans have been waitin'
to win the Premier League.
They came so close a couple of years ago,
and Klopp's buildin' the team.
They're unfortunate they've got such
a great Man City side to try to overcome.
[man 2]
Man City… don't write 'em off yet.
They've got a manager
who's, you know, a serial winner.
When you're goin' for a title,
the last thing you need is Pep Guardiola
and Manchester City
breathin' down your neck.
-They're faultless.
-They're in automatic mode,
-they know what they have to do.
-It's the tightest race for years.
It's nine on the bounce
for Manchester City.
I think the machine of
the relentlessness of-- of Man City.
No one could believe it.
[commentator]
Another Manchester City victory
this afternoon,
once again increases the pressure
on the Reds to win.
It was definitely a thing,
you know, Pep against Jürgen.
[commentator] Goal! My word!
[stadium clamour]
[announcer]
Liverpool 2 - Chelsea 0.
[commentator] Still neck and neck
in the race for the line.
In the charge to be champions.
[commentator 2] Manchester City return
to the top of the Premier League.
It just felt like
you were watchin' a boxin' fight
where everyone kept throwin'
right hands but no one was goin' down.
[commentator] Keïta…
and Liverpool have scored
inside the very first minute.
[commentator 2] Liverpool up to 91 points
with two games to go.
[commentator 3] It means City
keep gettin' pushed
and have to keep providin' the answers.
-[commentator] And Origi…
-[fans go wild]
They go to the top of the table.
[commentator 3] What these two teams
are doin' is remarkable.
[reporter] How significant a step
do you think that is
towards retaining the title?
We were seven points behind,
so we have just to win our game.
That is what we have to do.
[exhilarating music playing]
[indistinct background chatter]
-Come on, boys.
-[supportive shouts]
Yeah, let's go, let's go…
[player clapping his hands in the air]
[commentator] Well, 37 games down,
94 points in the bag.
and yet Liverpool go into the final day
of the Premier League season
as underdogs to win the league title.
The first thing they have to do here
is beat Wolves and then hope beyond hope
that Brighton can do them a massive favour
and get a result
at home to Manchester City.
[commentator 2] Alexander-Arnold, lovely.
Now then, three wait in the middle.
Crosses… Goal Liverpool!
Sadio Mané. Perfect delivery
from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Well, now they're celebratin' again.
[crowd chanting]
Brighton & Hove Albion 1 -
Manchester City 0.
Liverpool 1 - Wolverhampton Wanderers 0.
[commentator 2]
Liverpool top of the Premier League again.
[commentator] Well, watching the game,
checking their phones.
And everyone calms down
because Manchester City equalise
straight away.
-[emotive music playing]
-[fans chanting, cheering]
It's gone a little flatter now
because Manchester City lead
2 - 1 at Brighton.
Liverpool top
for the best part of 20 minutes.
And so Manchester City, top again.
Manchester City have scored a third.
[Guardiola] Honestly,
if I would have been a football player,
I would-- I would love to be his player.
[commentator] Manchester City are doin' it
in style on the South coast.
They have four now.
[fans chanting]
Since many, many years
of facing in the touch line,
maybe, you have certain moments, like…
[growls]
[scoffs] but in general, it was right.
It was-- it was good.
[whistle blows]
[whistle blows]
[commentator]
Well, it's not to be for Liverpool.
There's no wild celebration.
[commentator 2] They have given us
one heck of a ride in the Premier League.
Manchester City, they're champions.
And we look forward to doin' it all again
with them next season.
[solemn music playing]
[Lallana]
Just-- I just couldn't believe it.
He was extremely proud
of the points tally we got.
He didn't look at it
that we didn't win the league.
His message to his players were,
'Lads, you've got--
you've got 98 points,' or whatever it was.
Erm…
you know, and any, any, any,
other season, you piss the league.
If you see it, in the--
whatever happens to you in life,
as the only chance you ever had,
I feel a bit for you, to be honest.
Because there's a lot to come,
a lot of years.
It's all about you, what you do with it
and that's what we do with it.
People will tell us
now it's 30 years, now it's whatever.
But they, er, they have bigger problems,
to be honest.
[thunder rumbles]
[Klopp] You learn from all the efforts
you had and from all the things you did.
If you can improve, try to improve.
If you have to do it again, do it again.
My job is to be the one who--
if nobody can see the light anymore,
I need to show a little bit.
Yeah, it's dark
but there's a bit I can see, at least.
So, maybe you can follow me that way.
Jürgen, because of the horrendous
injury problems you've had,
how frustrating can that be
between now and the end of the season?
Yeah, very. It's not-- it's not great…
If younger people would ask me so,
'What do I have to do
to become a football manager?'
I say, first study medicine.
Because, over the years,
you do the job for more than 20 years,
I have to make all the decisions.
The final decision is always mine.
Besides…
who is fit. I don't have
the expertise to tell anybody…
'No, no, no, no. He can play'.
[Klopp] Thank you.
[BBC Radio jingle]
It's ten o'clock. I'm Leanne Harper.
Thousands of Liverpool fans
are making the journey to Wembley today
as the Reds take on Chelsea
in the Carabao Cup Final.
Darwin Núñez and Mo Salah will be given
late fitness tests after muscle injuries.
[male reporter]
We've got the team news now….
[male reporter 2]
No Mo Salah and no Darwin Núñez.
Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk
are the two central figures
in the Red's defence.
And up front, Harvey Elliott on the right,
Luis Díaz on the left
and Cody Gakpo down the middle.
Then a really youthful look
to the rest of the subs, Bobby Clark,
Jayden Danns, Jarell Quansah,
and Trey Nyoni.
Before any fans are even in the stadium,
we went on a walk around the stadium
and I was with the squad
and I was thinkin',
'This is gonna be mental.'
Now I was just thinkin',
'If I get on, I need to make an impact.
I need to make a name for myself.'
[stadium clamouring]
[Klopp] And going into a final
is a very tricky situation.
You have Liverpool FC on the shirt,
big expectations.
Until people saw the lineup.
As an opponent, you see, six,
seven, eight big guns are not there
and think…
'Hm… that increases our chances'.
But we decide before the game,
that's our squad and we will use it
as good as we can.
[Pep] Hope, hope,
hope for the players there.
Let's don't focus on what we don't have.
We have a big chance,
but the only thing that will work is if
we-- us two we are positive.
If the players feel, or the staff feel
that we have doubts, it will not work.
[stadium clamouring]
[whistle blows]
[commentator] It's the Carabao Cup Final
for 2024 underway.
Sadly, the likes of Darwin Núñez,
Mo Salah have not made it here today.
We don't want any more injuries.
[suspenseful music]
Endō's flick to the left of Gravenberch.
He's done brilliantly, Gravenberch.
Gakpo,
has he been fouled by Enzo Fernández?
Gakpo writhing in agony.
There's two Liverpool players
been taken out injured here.
[intensified music playing]
A stretcher for Ryan Gravenberch.
Our injury crisis gets even worse.
[Van Dijk] You have to stay calm
and that's what I try to do.
Making sure everyone's staying calm
and doin' the right things.
Lead by example, just help each other,
and never give up.
[commentator]
Robertson to swing it in from the left.
In to Van Dijk… header!
-Yes!
-[the stadium erupts]
[ecstatically]
Virgil van Dijk heads it in.
[quietly] Oh, no.
This is not gonna count, this.
[blows whistle]
-Oh, my word.
-[fans cheering and booing]
The Chelsea fans are up celebrating.
Jürgen is toying
with makin' more changes here.
[Klopp] Before extra time already,
we knew we cannot play the boys longer.
I mean, there's the chance to close
your eyes and hope they get through it.
We definitely wanted to win the game.
and for that you needed fresh legs.
The fresh legs were there,
they were just incredibly young…
and inexperienced.
[commentator]
So 19-year-old James McConnell
and Jayden Danns gonna come on,
who was only 18 last month.
[Danns]
I was like, 'Wow, what is going on?'
You look round and it looks like--
it doesn't look real.
It looks like a video game, like,
just so many heads watchin' ya
and so many eyes.
[commentator] Unbelievable moment.
[fans singing]
[Danns] You don't wanna be the boy
that's come on,
and, you know, he's fluffed his lines.
So I was nervous.
[commentator] Here he is on the left.
He's in the penalty area, Danns.
He's still goin' and he's shot!
And forces a save out of the keeper!
They're fearless, these academy kids,
you know? They really are.
It's over the top and Danns is chasing…
and Danns is putting pressure on Disasi.
And still Jayden Danns,
who won't give an inch by the way.
-[whistle blows]
-[suspenseful music lingering]
[suspenseful music continuing]
-[whistle blows]
-[commentator] So we're away again.
To the back post, Van Dijk is free.
Heads it across goal-- Danns!
Oh, great save by the goalkeeper.
Jayden Danns denied.
[mesmerised]
Wow, what a moment that would have been.
Clark, tight angle, Bobby Clark,
back to Tsimikas.
There's his cross. Elliott's header!
Save. Jayden Danns!
Has it gone in?!
No, it's right on the line,
and somehow Petrović gets it.
Jayden Danns almost the hero.
Well, these-- whatever happens,
these kids-- these kids can take a bow.
Two minutes left.
Surely not penalties.
Into the box now.
Bobby Clark twisting and turning.
Shot deflected over the top. Corner.
[fans chanting]
Corner.
Tsimikas to take.
[muffled twisting noise]
[yelling] Yes! It's Virgil van Dijk!
[energetic music pumping]
[yelling] Would you believe it?
It's incredible.
[music pumping continuously]
[Van Dijk] It was a perfect ball across
from Kostas,
and not a bad header from me.
-[clamouring]
-[commentator] Get in there!
Number ten, League Cup…
Liverpool have won it.
[crowd cheering]
Ah, it's amazin'.
It's absolutely incredible!
It feels emotional, though, doesn't it?
Jürgen Klopp,
what glory this man has given
to Liverpool Football Club.
The kids from the Academy.
Alex Inglethorpe, take a bow.
That was incredible.
[Klopp] What happened here tonight,
absolutely insane. Wow.
[Van Dijk] You're just so happy and proud.
I said to him before we went up,
I said,
'I wanna lift the trophy with you'.
And I'm glad he agreed to it.
-Virgil and Jürgen lift the trophy!
-[Van Dijk] A day I will never forget.
[Danns] When you're lookin' to your side
and you see the cup gettin' closer,
it's just like-- it's-- it's unbelievable.
Like, it's a feelin' that…
you can't really get anywhere else.
[commentator]
Jayden Danns will lift it, the Scouser,
Roy of the Rovers.
[Danns] There's no better feelin'
than accomplishin' what you've worked
all your whole life for.
[fans sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone']
[Klopp] The atmosphere was like
a flying carpet and we just sat on it…
and flew.
Relief.
Pure joy.
Happy for the boys.
Knowing what it means in the future,
written in the books forever.
Really, one of the best moments
of my whole career.
[all singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone']
[cheering, applause]
[closing theme music playing]
[dog playing]
[Harvey Elliott]
See, this is all he does, Paisley.
He just runs down the line.
[commentator] With his players walking
dutifully behind him,
Bob goes out
to collect his last big trophy.
It's Paisley's 6th League Championship.
[Scott Elliott] Greatest manager
in Liverpool history… Bob Paisley.
[chanting echoes in the stadium]
So I had to, er, name him Bob.
Well, Paisley.
But everyone calls him Bob to be fair,
for a nickname.
My whole life's always revolved
around Liverpool.
[commentator]
Oh, there's Rush in there. Rush! Goal!
[the fans go wild]
[Scott]
My birthday was the same day as Ian Rush.
So that swayed me to support Liverpool.
'87 - '88 season, me and my friend,
we were in the Kop and Liverpool scored
at the Annie road end.
[the fans go wild]
And we just got separated,
it was absolute mayhem.
From there, I just,
you know, I just fell in love with it.
Yeah, I had to have it, auction.
Sold when, er…
…when Melwood done the auction
to get rid of loads of bits.
[Elliott] I didn't know
you was gonna get it.
[Scott] You didn't know. I saw it,
and thought, 'I've gotta have that.
I've gotta have that in my house'.
This is probably the most emotional…
-[Elliott chuckles]
-…most wonderful experience
of your journey so far.
We had just signed for Liverpool
and after we had, erm-- well, you had
just signed for Liverpool, not 'we'.
[laughs]
But, erm…
as we were driving back
after sort of meeting Jürgen,
Harvey grabbed my arm on the motorway,
and said 'We did it together'.
And we both burst out crying, didn't we?
Then we pulled over on the hard shoulder
and we just had this embracing hug
for about a minute.
And Harvey presented me with a shirt.
It was like, yeah,
my favourite ever moment.
[Elliott] I think every part's for my dad.
I'm kind of livin' his dream.
So…
you know, as much as possible,
I try and live it with him.
You were three, when I took him
to Anfield for the first time.
-[Elliott] Yeah,
-So, I remember, you were in the park
opposite the Kop on my shoulders,
and you was singing old songs
with the fans.
Yeah, for me it's…
it's just been all my life.
[Scott] You've gotta have dreams in life.
I think, everyone has to have a dream.
And when it comes true it's, er…
it's amazin'.
[crowd cheering]
[reporter] And the draw for the last 16
of the Europa League is getting underway
at UEFA HQ in Switzerland.
Brighton, Liverpool, Rangers,
and West Ham are waiting
to find out who they will face…
[broadcaster 1] Liverpool go into this
and whoever we end up getting today,
we should go in
as overwhelming favourites.
[broadcaster 2] They're a dangerous team.
Really, really dangerous team, Liverpool.
They're gonna go close.
They're gonna go close
to all four this season.
[caller 1] What a way to end it,
by maybe winning the Carabao Cup Final,
and winnin' the Europa League.
[caller 2] He's gonna have to play
the young kids.
What have we got to lose?
If they're good enough,
they're old enough to play.
[Klopp] It's fine.
[announcer] …Liverpool FC,
[overlapping muffled dialogue]
-[Klopp] Let's hope for Germany, Freiburg.
-Freiburg, yeah.
We cannot get, er…
Brighton or West Ham, no?
No.
Pep!?
[Klopp] No, you only can get
a team which played last night.
-Yeah, exactly. [Pep laughs]
-But you make it-- keep it simple for you.
[Pep laughing] Thank you.
[announcer] Among the winners
of the knock-out playoffs
unseeded teams, we have SC Freiburg,
Olympique de Marseille, AC Sparta Praha…
[Jürgen puffs a sigh]
[overlapping chatter]
Honestly, the…
the teams are really good there.
OK, not to Qarabağ.
That's too long a flight.
-[man] Here we go.
-[nervous jitter in the background]
Sparta Praha will play… Liverpool.
-I say!
-[man] To Prague.
-[Klopp] Prague.
-[enthusiastically] I say.
-OK. How long is a flight to Prague?
-[John Achterberg] About two and a half.
-Two and a half.
-[Klopp] That's alright.
I've never been to Prague.
-Never.
-Well, we were there a week.
-For the wrong reasons.
-[laughter]
[Klopp] Dealing with this…
amount of games
Relief.
Preparation.
Relief-preparation,
or frustration-preparation.
The overriding feeling after a game is
the next game is coming.
[distant cheering in the stadium]
[commentator 1] Alexis Mac Allister
thought he was going to take it,
now Darwin Núñez is gonna take it.
[commentator 2]
Can Darwin be deadly from 12 yards?
[commentator 3]
Darwin Núñez runs up. Right foot.
Hits the post!
[radio host]
Darwin Núñez, is he good or bad?
-Josh is a Liverpool fan. Hello, Joshua.
-[Joshua] He's a fantastic footballer,
but he can't put the easy chances away.
[commentator] Núñez! Hits the bar again.
[Pep]
In the season, with social media now,
with how the world is,
these players, they go through moments
when it's like the whole world has
an opinion and it comes all to you.
[caller]
He does need to be more clinical…
… you look at some of these chances
and you're like,
'Come on, mate.
Put it in the back of the net'.
[commentator] What a-- Oh, it's not!
Darwin Núñez can't believe it.
For players nowadays, that's really…
It's really important,
that cannot take the confidence away,
but you need good people around you
where… the outside world doesn't matter.
You come in and it's just about us,
about the colleagues, about…
[sighing] about… the family, yeah.
[Pep in Portuguese] Let's have
a look again at how things are going.
So, you're the best in Europe
in terms of assists and goals combined.
You've got 23 from 36 games played.
The thing is, you've got both aspects.
Some players are just about scoring,
but you're becoming more
and more of an assist-provider,
but I think you've still got
so much more to offer.
[Núñez in Spanish] Yes, obviously,
a striker always lives by goals.
But the most important thing for me
is to help the team,
because they're going to need me
and I'm going to need them.
[Pep in Portuguese] You've got to train
your hardest and not get frustrated.
Remember, you're helping the team
and that's why you're in the team.
To press, counter-pressing.
You're doing great, mate. Let's go.
-Now, rest.
-Thank you.
-Nice one.
-[Núñez] See you, mate.
-See you later, have fun.
-See you.
[Pep in English]
It's about dealing with mistakes, no?
And growing from there.
I think, these meetings only make sense
when the players really want to learn.
[players shouting]
[coach] Good.
[Klopp] It's our interest
to help the boys as much as we can.
The moment
when you enter the training ground…
this is your safe place.
You leave the problems you have outside.
Yes, we have to train.
Yes, I have to do well. But…
the gaffer thinks…
I'm good enough.
So, I probably am.
And that's what I tell the boys.
If I tell you, you're good…
you are good, because I saw of you.
[muffled voices on the pitch]
[fans chanting from inside the stadium]
Match scarf for the game, lads?
[commentator] Good evening, everybody.
It's always an absolute privilege,
and a pleasure to be at Anfield,
as Liverpool hosting Sparta Praha.
in the last 16 of the Europa League.
Five one up of course
from last week's first leg.
The Reds one step away
from tomorrow's quarter final draw.
[Scott] Wow.
Gets me every time. Look at this.
Especially, an evening game.
Floodlights, the green grass,
it's just unbelievable.
You just step up, and the excitement…
It's like you're a little kid again.
It's what it's like.
It's just… it's just amazin'.
[fans singing and chanting]
[commentator] This is Dominik Szoboszlai.
His ball is for Darwin Núñez!
[cheering] Yes!
You have to be ready in life,
and you have to be ready in football,
and things will be difficult.
Only the… the guys who really live up to…
the professionalism will survive,
and you need to enjoy
the fact that you are representing
the best club in the world.
[commentator] I think, we're gonna see
some substitutions, by the way,
for the second half.
Harvey Elliott's gonna come on
for the second half. He's ready.
He's with Pep Lijnders
right by the dugout.
My main goal is to break into the team,
and to be a star at this club.
I didn't think
he was gonna come on so soon.
[Scott] I'm surprised
they're playin' him left wing.
I suppose that's the advantage to him.
He can play in five different positions.
[Elliott] It's all down to my dad, really.
As long as I work as hard as I can
and leave everything on the pitch,
then that's all he asks for really.
Whatever else comes of it,
you know, is a bonus, but…
he expects a lot from me
which is, you know, why I'm here and…
why I'm… the player who I am.
[fans chanting]
It's not gonna be a easy road,
but that's just what I wanna do.
I wanna achieve everything at this club.
[Scott] Ooh, here we go.
[fans chanting]
-[the fans go wild]
-Yeah!
Yes!
Yes, you beauty!
Get in there, lad.
[female fan screaming in the background]
-[Scott] Has someone else touched it?
-I don't know.
I dunno if someone's touched it.
Oh, it did.
It hit Gakpo and gone in.
It was goin'--
he tried to get out the way.
That would'a gone in as well.
[commentator] What a night.
Liverpool 6 - Sparta Praha 1.
[Elliott]
Making my family proud is the main thing.
But making myself proud,
and making the city proud.
When you come off the pitch,
you can say, 'Yeah, I left it all there'.
[cheers gain momentum]
[chanting] Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah.
[commentator] It's over. It's over.
And Real Madrid have won
their third consecutive
UEFA Champions League.
What a night in Kiev.
[Lallana] How Jürgen spoke at the end
of the Champions League Final,
you know, with so much optimism
and so much belief in-- in-- in the group,
and I think the confidence
of getting to the Champions League Final,
that gives you inner belief.
[exhilarating music playing]
[commentator] In search of our dreams,
in search of silverware.
Welcome to Liverpool Football Club's
2018-2019 season.
There is, quite rightly,
the sense of optimism around Anfield.
[tense music playing]
[fans cheering]
[commentator] What a strike by Sadio Mané.
[tense music continuing]
It's Roberto Firmino for Liverpool…
If you talk about the front three…
er, in the last ten years in England,
you have to name them Sadio, Bobby and Mo.
Erm, the amount of times Jürgen said…
'And from left to right Sadio, Bobby, Mo'.
[chuckles]
[commentator] Goal!
You know, we were
just dismantling most teams, really.
[commentator] He's on for
a hat-trick here, is Mohamed Salah.
[fans go wild]
[commentator] You just knew
what the end result was going to be.
The squad was…
as strong as it had ever been, I think.
We were just a winnin' machine
at that point.
[fans chanting]
[commentator] The 232nd Merseyside Derby.
Liverpool 0 - Everton 0.
Four minutes here to be added.
That Everton match was--
it was a massive match.
It was still 0-0, and we were
absolutely desperate for a winner.
It was the 96th minute
and we got a short free kick.
Alisson's comin', like,
running up, tapped it to Trent.
Trent's banged it in the box.
It was gonna hit the bar, or somethin'.
I can't remember what Pickford's done,
but then it's-- it's just fell to…
to Divock, and Divock's popped it in
with his head.
[commentator] Unbelievable!
Divock Origi
has won the derby for Liverpool.
Jürgen Klopp can't believe it.
[Lallana]
I remember lookin' at Divock thinkin',
I'm not sure you know the score,
'cos I think he thought he equalised.
I remember sayin' to him after,
I went, 'You wasn't sure that was…
what the score was, were you?'
Divock was a little bit like that.
At times he was away with the fairies.
[commentator]
Firmino, oh, that's absolutely wonderful.
[Lallana] We reached the halfway point
of the season, still unbeaten,
and were seven points clear at the top
of the Premier League.
We knew we were goin' for the league,
'cos we were the real deal.
[Klopp]
How can you not be positive about us?
But you are the first,
if you drop three points
the next headline is
'Are they nervous now?'
So that's an easy job.
I would love to be in your situation.
Still earn the money I earn,
but be in your situation.
[laughter]
[gentle music playing]
[man] They're immense
at the moment, Liverpool.
[woman]
It's been a great start for Liverpool,
and, ultimately,
they're in the driving seat.
[man 2] It feels like
everybody thinks the squad's boss
and we can win the league,
if everything goes right.
[Raphael Honigstein]
Half way through the season
Liverpool are seven points clear.
People are beginning to think,
and dream could this be the one year
in nearly 30,
when Liverpool can win the Premier League?
[emotive music playing]
Unfortunately…
…they came up against Manchester City,
who were even more brilliant.
[uneasy music playing]
[Guardiola] He sure has been
the biggest, biggest rival in my career.
At first, because we face each other
a thousand million times
in Germany and here in England,
especially.
[commentator] Two managers en vogue
at the moment playing attacking football
which has made the methods
of other managers appear dated.
The high pressing, and, er,
intensity all the time.
Always doin' quick, quick, quick, quick.
And don't let you breathe.
Since first facing off in 2013
in Bundesliga,
Klopp against Guardiola has grown
into one of the greatest rivalries
in football.
Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp,
we are really different.
I'm not a genius,
but I can fire up a few people.
I have a clear idea
about the football I love.
And Pep's control
and these kinds of things,
so it's really a fire and water, and…
sometimes water wins
and sometimes fire wins.
[dramatic music playing]
[broadcaster]
We're talkin' about six pointers.
This is a huge game,
but Liverpool are there on merit.
If they were to win that game,
I don't think they can be caught.
[commentator]
Manchester City looking to close the gap
at the top of the table.
[starting whistle blows]
[cheering]
[tense music playing]
We knew it for a long time.
A win, or we are out.
A win, or we are out
[fans exclaiming]
[fans shouting]
[commentator] Lovely turn by Salah.
And goes again…
and threads the ball through.
[music jolts, continues]
[excitedly]
And Mané's in and sco--oh, he doesn't.
It might still go in.
[music intensifies]
[music fades to still]
[commentator] Unbelievable,
that it's not gone over the line.
-That is a hair.
-[tense music reverberates]
[fans cheering]
[man] But for Manchester City,
if they win the game,
suddenly it's blown wide open again.
[commentator] Bernardo Silva, Agüero
in front of his man-- Oh, what a finish.
He always scores against Liverpool here,
and he's done it again has Sergio Agüero.
[tense music reverberates]
Now Alexander-Arnold
side to side from Liverpool.
What can they find at the end of it?
Oh, man round the back is Robertson!
And in by Firmino!
Brilliant Liverpool goal.
They have carved Manchester City
wide open.
[fans cheering]
And here's Sané… goal. No, it is.
And now Liverpool have to dig deep again.
Henderson…
lookin' in behind Stones… Salah!
Oh, Ederson's got a hand on that,
has he?
So close for Mohamed Salah.
[tense music lingers]
-[whistle blows]
-[fans go wild]
And that will do.
It's a big win for Pep Guardiola
and Manchester City.
[Carragher] I think, after
Manchester City beat Liverpool at home,
in one of the greatest
Premier League games I've ever seen.
The quality
was just absolutely outstandin'.
But there was a feelin',
I think, if you're Manchester City,
we can claw this back.
When I beat him, I love it.
I sleep perfectly afterwards.
[man] Actually, if I was Manchester City,
if I was the manager, Pep,
you'd be sort of rubbin'
your hands together now, sayin'…
'Game on, now'.
[gentle piano music playing]
We drove home,
and we didn't talk for a long time
about that-- about the game.
When we finally started talking
about what happened on the afternoon,
it was like… Jürgen wouldn't have anything
like whinging about the dropped points.
It was always, like,
if we keep it together,
you know, the other teams will stumble,
as well. We just have to keep it together.
As a manager,
who's 100% focused on the job,
when you see him in interviews,
he's switched on.
From mile, to mile, to mile, towards home,
the role of being the manager
of Liverpool dropped off, you know?
The more-- the closer we got home,
the more he was…
'Jürgen, the normal one'.
And when we were back home,
he was completely Jürgen,
and not the manager.
[reporters talking among themselves]
[reporter] Feels like there's so much
surroundin' this game, though,
as well, 'cos…
you speak about
yourself facin' Pep potentially
for the last time.
Obviously,
in the context of the title race,
it's a big game as well.
It's probably the game
of the weekend, and of Sunday,
and, erm, so that's being… being able to…
to be part of that is… is… is massive.
[fans singing in the distance]
[fan]
I'm nervous, you know? I'm quite nervous.
More nervous than I've been
for most City games we've had.
[commentator] Wonderful situation
at the top of the table.
This is a heavyweight contest
in every sense of the word
in football terms.
In a game that is essential to both teams.
[Van Dijk talking]
Together, together, guys.
[Van Dijk] It's our day, boys, ay?
Our day.
[man] Good luck to you.
[Van Dijk] Be sure
that from the first second to the last…
Our day. Our opportunity.
-[man] Thank you.
-[Van Dijk] Be ready for this.
[fans singing]
Go on, boys. Let's go.
[fans singing, chanting]
[commentator] The crowd know
they have a massive role to play
in this one here today.
It's Mac Allister.
Endō, lovely switch. Lovely.
Mac Allister. Núñez is in…
…big chance…
Yes-- It's offside.
-Oh, he's given offside…
-[confused commentators overlapping]
[tense music playing]
…De Bruyne went low…
and Stones scores…
off the near post.
[Van Dijk] We are winners.
We're not gonna give up
until the last second of the game.
[commentator]
Elliott. Again, it's so tight.
And there's a ball for Haaland,
who's got a run on one on one
with Virgil van Dijk.
It was managed well.
If you're gonna give up when
you're havin' a difficult time, then…
you're not a real winner in my opinion.
[commentator] That's the last kick
of the half by Dominik Szoboszlai,
testing Ederson.
[commentator 2] …you know,
you've gotta see the… take a draw,
but if you're going to win the league,
you have to win with the home advantage.
[commentator 1] A space on the right
looking for Conor Bradley
Aké with the back pass…
Oh, Núñez will chase.
[in disbelief] Oh, penalty!
Ederson with the foul on Darwin Núñez.
[uproar from the fans]
-This is a huge moment in this game here.
-[whistle blows]
Anfield holds its collective breath.
[suspenseful music pulsing slowly]
[the fans go wild, cheering]
[chanting]
There's Walker…
He's beaten them. Brilliant by Díaz.
Díaz has beaten them. Still Díaz.
Brilliant. He's turned Walker inside out.
Corner. Brilliant by Díaz.
There's plenty of opportunities
now in this second half.
Liverpool break now. Great run by Díaz…
He's got Núñez in. He's got Szoboszlai.
Núñez… reverse… Díaz…
[disappointed cries]
Díaz in the middle…
…Salah, what a pass…
-Díaz is through on goal! Misses.
-[agonising cries from the commentator]
-Oh, no!
-What an opportunity again.
-[final whistle blows]
-And that is that.
So it finishes 1 - 1 here at Anfield.
[melancholy music playing]
[Klopp] Exceptional football game, wow.
Wow, really, whoa.
-For me, they proved today the first time.
-[melancholy music continuing]
100% yes.
We are exactly where we should be
in that position in that area,
and we will fight for it.
[reporter] If this is the last time
that you manage against Jürgen Klopp,
it may not be, uh, would you miss him?
He made us better team.
He made a-- made me better manager.
And I wish him,
from the bottom of my heart,
he will be back soon.
[reporter] It's a fascinating period
for Liverpool, and for Jürgen Klopp,
and that pursuit
of the quadruple continues.
The big games coming thick and fast.
[Raphael] Trusting young players
has always been a cornerstone
of Jürgen Klopp's coaching philosophy.
He likes to bring through those youngsters
and most importantly,
he trusts them to deliver.
[Carragher]
It's not easy comin' through at Liverpool.
It's one of the biggest clubs in the world
with some of the best players
in the world.
So you need a manager who's got belief
in your academy system
who's also brave enough,
and got the courage
to put these young lads in.
[Klopp]
Imagine the physicality of a 22-year-old.
And the game understanding
of a 35-year-old.
[scoffs] That's a player.
From young,
it's probably the same as it is now.
You see all players in front,
and think, 'I wanna get in front of them'.
And other kids come in, you're thinkin',
'I wanna outperform them.'
to show them, you don't need more kids,
you've got the one here.
Can anyone see my car over there?
[excited commotion among the kids]
[Danns] From young,
you're playing for the contract.
You wanna sign for Liverpool as a kid.
You wanna go to the team
that you support the most.
[coach] Right, who wants to play football
with the first team?
[all shouting] Me.
I've supported the club me whole life.
Literally, from birth
I've been put into it. Me dad was a Red.
-Me grandad's a Red.
-[laughter]
When I was younger, erm,
I used to get messages to--
if you wanna be a ball boy
and I was always first to that message,
erm…
So, I used to sing me lungs off,
basically,
on the Kop End,
so when I scored and ran into the crowd,
it was a surreal moment.
[fans cheering]
[indistinct chatter]
[kids clapping, whistling]
[Danns] It was all fun, as you're younger.
And then as you grow up,
you start seein' your friends get released
and you think, yeah, this is real.
Like, I'm not playin' just to play.
I'm playin' for somethin' more.
[photographer] Everybody like this, boys.
-One, two, three, cheese.
-[all] Cheese.
[emotive music playing]
[Scott]
Just lookin' at stuff.
These are things
I'll go through with Harvey.
We'll look back
at some highlights of each game
and think what he could do better,
what he's done well.
[interviewer] Does he listen to you?
Always. He never argues.
He's got his own opinion.
And we talk about things like that, but,
generally, he knows I'm pretty spot on.
And he-- he'll accept that good or bad,
you know?
There's praise and criticism,
but you have to be able to handle both.
[Elliott] When I was a young kid,
we played, er, Tottenham,
and it was either 9 - 1 or 10 - 1,
and I remember scoring nine.
Erm, but…
the goal we conceded was my fault.
Went back to the car
and my dad was waitin' in the car for me.
I remember he had a…
a look of thunder on his face
and was, like, the goal you conceded
was, you know, your fault.
It just sums him up.
You know, he always wants the best for me.
He always wants more
and if there's something I've done wrong,
he's told me.
From a young age
when he was making mistakes,
I was on his case constantly.
I always said to him, 'Anyone can handle
an arm round the shoulder,
but not many people can handle
a rollocking or a telling off
in front of people, right?'
So, he can handle that.
[music pulsating slowly]
Liverpool's pursuit
of silverware's relentless.
They're still in the hunt
for the Premier League
and they're going after all three cups.
But whilst Manchester City have been
the strongest opponent
in recent years for Liverpool,
the historic rivalry with Man United
will always be much bigger.
[fan]
I mean, it's a proper rivalry, isn't it?
You can… see that outside.
I think, this game takes on
a little bit more importance
for the Manchester United fans as well.
Their only thing to look forward
to this season is the FA Cup, isn't it?
[Jan] Right, come on, Fran.
Get your regalia on. Let's go.
-We've already been insulted.
-We've already had… already been insulted.
And called thievin' you-know-whats.
We're just two old women
and we don't want all that mither.
We don't want all that trouble.
We've not come for trouble.
-I think he's goin' to pick a strong team.
-A mixture.
Er, and, er, there'll be some youngsters
on the bench that he can probably call on.
I think, the young lads,
er, they've got a confidence now.
They're young, aren't they?
There's no fear. Yeah.
And they've got a confidence now,
cos he's had 'em in for quite a number
of games 'cos he's had to.
We expect,
they're gonna come away with a win
and another trip down to Wembley, Jan.
-Yeah.
-They're only there really, aren't they?
-We know where we're going.
-[conversation trails off]
[commentator]
That performance against Manchester City,
if they get anywhere near that today,
then they'll steamroll Manchester United.
[commentator 2] When you're goin'
for four trophies, it's a huge ask.
[broadcaster] Maybe, it's written
in the stars. I don't know.
But I expect 'em to get…
really deep in all the competitions.
[Fran] Honestly…
when you're nurses for 40 odd years,
you've got bad backs.
So standin' up this long, at this age,
it does us in.
[commentator] Manchester United
and Liverpool, the two biggest teams
in world football,
who need to be at it,
right from the start.
-[crowd noise]
-[commentator] Rashford cutting inside.
He's slipped it in, Garnacho, who's free!
-Brilliant save by Kelleher.
-[the fans go wild]
But McTominay scores
for Manchester United.
Wake up, fuck's sake.
[commentator] Past Fernandez,
runs past Rashford.
What a run, Quansah goin' all the way.
Into Núñez to Mac Allister!
[the stadium erupts]
It comes to Díaz in the box.
He's got defenders surroundin'…
Núñez left foot. Onto his right.
Great save.
[music plays slowly]
-Salah, must be…
-[commentator 2] Yes!
[commentator 1] Liverpool scores!
Liverpool lead!
They've turned this cup tie around.
Two goals at the end of the half.
[crowd chanting]
[whistle blows]
Three in the box.
Elliott, on his left leg.
Shot deflected.
Spins over the top for a corner kick.
-Great turn-- Shoot! Good save.
-[commentator 2] Oh, my goodness.
What a save.
Third goal now.
That's all we need. We're on top of 'em.
We're all over 'em.
[commentator] Five left of stoppage time.
Switch by Antony,
Garnacho running at Bradley in the area.
Chance here. Elliott blocks him.
-Antony…
-[music swirls]
-[cheering]
-It's in!
-[commentator 2] Oh, no.
-It's 2 - 2.
Unbelievable.
Chance, after chance, after chance.
[announcement over PA]
[full-time whistle]
[commentator 2] Liverpool will rue
the time when they were so much on top
but they just couldn't
take advantage from it.
We're gonna have another 30 minutes.
I'm nervous.
I'm… I'm shakin'.
I'm worried, in a way,
that we bought that on ourself,
because we should'a finished
that game off in the second half.
Easily.
[stadium clamour]
[commentator] Bradley…
it's a fortuitous bounce.
A space for Harvey Elliott
from distance, a deflection and in.
[cheering]
He's come of age here again tonight.
At Old Trafford, a big goal…
Núñez has come very deep
and they have nothing to hit.
They're in trouble here
as McTominay collects.
Rashford.
-[cheering]
-Doesn't miss that one.
Liverpool caught hopelessly out of shape.
-I don't want peno's, Fran. Come on.
-[Fran] Honestly, it's all the time.
-We're gonna get the next goal and win.
-Come on. Let's go.
[commentator] In it goes. Good delivery,
McTominay heads it clear.
-Endō leaves it… Elliott makes a mistake!
-Oh, no.
And Garnacho is breakin' for United.
-[comm 2] Drop… drop.
-There's a chance for United here.
Get back, get back!
[Elliott] It's kind of we're not allowed
to lose. We need to win. Otherwise…
You know, it's simply not good enough.
You know, every time we do lose,
I don't think I speak to anyone for--
for a day, to be honest.
[emotive music playing]
[fans going wild in the stadium]
Oh, for fuck's sake.
You can be angry with yourself,
you can be frustrated with yourself,
but it gets to a point where
there's only so long you can be like that.
It's a learnin' curve, you know,
you've made it, you can't change it.
The only thing you can do now
is not make the same one again.
[commentator]
But Liverpool caught from a corner.
Endō and Elliott leave it for each other.
Whoa, dear me.
I'm absolutely pissed off
with this bloody game.
I really am, Jan.
We've just give it to 'em.
Honestly.
[commentator] The referee is gonna bring
an end to the game.
It's Shankly who said
playing on this level
should not be pressure,
it should be a reward.
Because when you were young,
you wanted to play in these stadiums.
[commentator]
One of the all-time great FA Cup ties,
Manchester United into the semi-finals
saw them beat Liverpool 4 - 3
and end their great rivals' hopes
of a quadruple.
[Pep] Football's a game of mistakes.
I believe the team who make more mistakes
is the team who will win in the end.
[Jan]
Right, come on, Fran. Cup of tea for me.
[Fran] Cup of tea, yeah.
[man] Liverpool fans have been waitin'
to win the Premier League.
They came so close a couple of years ago,
and Klopp's buildin' the team.
They're unfortunate they've got such
a great Man City side to try to overcome.
[man 2]
Man City… don't write 'em off yet.
They've got a manager
who's, you know, a serial winner.
When you're goin' for a title,
the last thing you need is Pep Guardiola
and Manchester City
breathin' down your neck.
-They're faultless.
-They're in automatic mode,
-they know what they have to do.
-It's the tightest race for years.
It's nine on the bounce
for Manchester City.
I think the machine of
the relentlessness of-- of Man City.
No one could believe it.
[commentator]
Another Manchester City victory
this afternoon,
once again increases the pressure
on the Reds to win.
It was definitely a thing,
you know, Pep against Jürgen.
[commentator] Goal! My word!
[stadium clamour]
[announcer]
Liverpool 2 - Chelsea 0.
[commentator] Still neck and neck
in the race for the line.
In the charge to be champions.
[commentator 2] Manchester City return
to the top of the Premier League.
It just felt like
you were watchin' a boxin' fight
where everyone kept throwin'
right hands but no one was goin' down.
[commentator] Keïta…
and Liverpool have scored
inside the very first minute.
[commentator 2] Liverpool up to 91 points
with two games to go.
[commentator 3] It means City
keep gettin' pushed
and have to keep providin' the answers.
-[commentator] And Origi…
-[fans go wild]
They go to the top of the table.
[commentator 3] What these two teams
are doin' is remarkable.
[reporter] How significant a step
do you think that is
towards retaining the title?
We were seven points behind,
so we have just to win our game.
That is what we have to do.
[exhilarating music playing]
[indistinct background chatter]
-Come on, boys.
-[supportive shouts]
Yeah, let's go, let's go…
[player clapping his hands in the air]
[commentator] Well, 37 games down,
94 points in the bag.
and yet Liverpool go into the final day
of the Premier League season
as underdogs to win the league title.
The first thing they have to do here
is beat Wolves and then hope beyond hope
that Brighton can do them a massive favour
and get a result
at home to Manchester City.
[commentator 2] Alexander-Arnold, lovely.
Now then, three wait in the middle.
Crosses… Goal Liverpool!
Sadio Mané. Perfect delivery
from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Well, now they're celebratin' again.
[crowd chanting]
Brighton & Hove Albion 1 -
Manchester City 0.
Liverpool 1 - Wolverhampton Wanderers 0.
[commentator 2]
Liverpool top of the Premier League again.
[commentator] Well, watching the game,
checking their phones.
And everyone calms down
because Manchester City equalise
straight away.
-[emotive music playing]
-[fans chanting, cheering]
It's gone a little flatter now
because Manchester City lead
2 - 1 at Brighton.
Liverpool top
for the best part of 20 minutes.
And so Manchester City, top again.
Manchester City have scored a third.
[Guardiola] Honestly,
if I would have been a football player,
I would-- I would love to be his player.
[commentator] Manchester City are doin' it
in style on the South coast.
They have four now.
[fans chanting]
Since many, many years
of facing in the touch line,
maybe, you have certain moments, like…
[growls]
[scoffs] but in general, it was right.
It was-- it was good.
[whistle blows]
[whistle blows]
[commentator]
Well, it's not to be for Liverpool.
There's no wild celebration.
[commentator 2] They have given us
one heck of a ride in the Premier League.
Manchester City, they're champions.
And we look forward to doin' it all again
with them next season.
[solemn music playing]
[Lallana]
Just-- I just couldn't believe it.
He was extremely proud
of the points tally we got.
He didn't look at it
that we didn't win the league.
His message to his players were,
'Lads, you've got--
you've got 98 points,' or whatever it was.
Erm…
you know, and any, any, any,
other season, you piss the league.
If you see it, in the--
whatever happens to you in life,
as the only chance you ever had,
I feel a bit for you, to be honest.
Because there's a lot to come,
a lot of years.
It's all about you, what you do with it
and that's what we do with it.
People will tell us
now it's 30 years, now it's whatever.
But they, er, they have bigger problems,
to be honest.
[thunder rumbles]
[Klopp] You learn from all the efforts
you had and from all the things you did.
If you can improve, try to improve.
If you have to do it again, do it again.
My job is to be the one who--
if nobody can see the light anymore,
I need to show a little bit.
Yeah, it's dark
but there's a bit I can see, at least.
So, maybe you can follow me that way.
Jürgen, because of the horrendous
injury problems you've had,
how frustrating can that be
between now and the end of the season?
Yeah, very. It's not-- it's not great…
If younger people would ask me so,
'What do I have to do
to become a football manager?'
I say, first study medicine.
Because, over the years,
you do the job for more than 20 years,
I have to make all the decisions.
The final decision is always mine.
Besides…
who is fit. I don't have
the expertise to tell anybody…
'No, no, no, no. He can play'.
[Klopp] Thank you.
[BBC Radio jingle]
It's ten o'clock. I'm Leanne Harper.
Thousands of Liverpool fans
are making the journey to Wembley today
as the Reds take on Chelsea
in the Carabao Cup Final.
Darwin Núñez and Mo Salah will be given
late fitness tests after muscle injuries.
[male reporter]
We've got the team news now….
[male reporter 2]
No Mo Salah and no Darwin Núñez.
Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk
are the two central figures
in the Red's defence.
And up front, Harvey Elliott on the right,
Luis Díaz on the left
and Cody Gakpo down the middle.
Then a really youthful look
to the rest of the subs, Bobby Clark,
Jayden Danns, Jarell Quansah,
and Trey Nyoni.
Before any fans are even in the stadium,
we went on a walk around the stadium
and I was with the squad
and I was thinkin',
'This is gonna be mental.'
Now I was just thinkin',
'If I get on, I need to make an impact.
I need to make a name for myself.'
[stadium clamouring]
[Klopp] And going into a final
is a very tricky situation.
You have Liverpool FC on the shirt,
big expectations.
Until people saw the lineup.
As an opponent, you see, six,
seven, eight big guns are not there
and think…
'Hm… that increases our chances'.
But we decide before the game,
that's our squad and we will use it
as good as we can.
[Pep] Hope, hope,
hope for the players there.
Let's don't focus on what we don't have.
We have a big chance,
but the only thing that will work is if
we-- us two we are positive.
If the players feel, or the staff feel
that we have doubts, it will not work.
[stadium clamouring]
[whistle blows]
[commentator] It's the Carabao Cup Final
for 2024 underway.
Sadly, the likes of Darwin Núñez,
Mo Salah have not made it here today.
We don't want any more injuries.
[suspenseful music]
Endō's flick to the left of Gravenberch.
He's done brilliantly, Gravenberch.
Gakpo,
has he been fouled by Enzo Fernández?
Gakpo writhing in agony.
There's two Liverpool players
been taken out injured here.
[intensified music playing]
A stretcher for Ryan Gravenberch.
Our injury crisis gets even worse.
[Van Dijk] You have to stay calm
and that's what I try to do.
Making sure everyone's staying calm
and doin' the right things.
Lead by example, just help each other,
and never give up.
[commentator]
Robertson to swing it in from the left.
In to Van Dijk… header!
-Yes!
-[the stadium erupts]
[ecstatically]
Virgil van Dijk heads it in.
[quietly] Oh, no.
This is not gonna count, this.
[blows whistle]
-Oh, my word.
-[fans cheering and booing]
The Chelsea fans are up celebrating.
Jürgen is toying
with makin' more changes here.
[Klopp] Before extra time already,
we knew we cannot play the boys longer.
I mean, there's the chance to close
your eyes and hope they get through it.
We definitely wanted to win the game.
and for that you needed fresh legs.
The fresh legs were there,
they were just incredibly young…
and inexperienced.
[commentator]
So 19-year-old James McConnell
and Jayden Danns gonna come on,
who was only 18 last month.
[Danns]
I was like, 'Wow, what is going on?'
You look round and it looks like--
it doesn't look real.
It looks like a video game, like,
just so many heads watchin' ya
and so many eyes.
[commentator] Unbelievable moment.
[fans singing]
[Danns] You don't wanna be the boy
that's come on,
and, you know, he's fluffed his lines.
So I was nervous.
[commentator] Here he is on the left.
He's in the penalty area, Danns.
He's still goin' and he's shot!
And forces a save out of the keeper!
They're fearless, these academy kids,
you know? They really are.
It's over the top and Danns is chasing…
and Danns is putting pressure on Disasi.
And still Jayden Danns,
who won't give an inch by the way.
-[whistle blows]
-[suspenseful music lingering]
[suspenseful music continuing]
-[whistle blows]
-[commentator] So we're away again.
To the back post, Van Dijk is free.
Heads it across goal-- Danns!
Oh, great save by the goalkeeper.
Jayden Danns denied.
[mesmerised]
Wow, what a moment that would have been.
Clark, tight angle, Bobby Clark,
back to Tsimikas.
There's his cross. Elliott's header!
Save. Jayden Danns!
Has it gone in?!
No, it's right on the line,
and somehow Petrović gets it.
Jayden Danns almost the hero.
Well, these-- whatever happens,
these kids-- these kids can take a bow.
Two minutes left.
Surely not penalties.
Into the box now.
Bobby Clark twisting and turning.
Shot deflected over the top. Corner.
[fans chanting]
Corner.
Tsimikas to take.
[muffled twisting noise]
[yelling] Yes! It's Virgil van Dijk!
[energetic music pumping]
[yelling] Would you believe it?
It's incredible.
[music pumping continuously]
[Van Dijk] It was a perfect ball across
from Kostas,
and not a bad header from me.
-[clamouring]
-[commentator] Get in there!
Number ten, League Cup…
Liverpool have won it.
[crowd cheering]
Ah, it's amazin'.
It's absolutely incredible!
It feels emotional, though, doesn't it?
Jürgen Klopp,
what glory this man has given
to Liverpool Football Club.
The kids from the Academy.
Alex Inglethorpe, take a bow.
That was incredible.
[Klopp] What happened here tonight,
absolutely insane. Wow.
[Van Dijk] You're just so happy and proud.
I said to him before we went up,
I said,
'I wanna lift the trophy with you'.
And I'm glad he agreed to it.
-Virgil and Jürgen lift the trophy!
-[Van Dijk] A day I will never forget.
[Danns] When you're lookin' to your side
and you see the cup gettin' closer,
it's just like-- it's-- it's unbelievable.
Like, it's a feelin' that…
you can't really get anywhere else.
[commentator]
Jayden Danns will lift it, the Scouser,
Roy of the Rovers.
[Danns] There's no better feelin'
than accomplishin' what you've worked
all your whole life for.
[fans sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone']
[Klopp] The atmosphere was like
a flying carpet and we just sat on it…
and flew.
Relief.
Pure joy.
Happy for the boys.
Knowing what it means in the future,
written in the books forever.
Really, one of the best moments
of my whole career.
[all singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone']
[cheering, applause]
[closing theme music playing]
